Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre was transformed into an autumn wonderland as the latest trends and styles were paraded up and down the catwalk for Rochdale Exchange’s annual fashion show.

Throughout the day customers could get style advice from a fashion guru helping them decide which colours suited them best and Boots offered shoppers mini makeovers and beauty advice.

As twelve o’clock approached the music was turned up loud and the models from Rochdale Exchange came out to strut their stuff. The four shows included daywear, ‘walk in the park’ and of course partywear from Beales, officers Club and River Island.

After every show a free raffle was drawn to win a variety of prizes ranging from £50 vouchers to spend in the centre, a Boots luxury hamper and a beautiful bouquet from Simply flowers in the Rochdale Market.

CHARITY BALL FoR THE CHRISTIE Rochdale Town Hall was awash with glitz and glamour as people arrived for The Rochdale Exchange Vegas night Charity Ball, organised to raise money for The Christie charity. Vegas showgirls greeted guests as they arrived at the Town Hall and enjoyed the champagne reception.

Lorenzo o’Reilly, Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre manger, commented: “The night was a huge success, there was a great turn out and everyone enjoyed themselves, as well as raising a lot of money for The Christie.”

WHERE THERE’S MUCK THERE'S BRASS Local author, Terry Whitworth, delves into Rochdale’s famous textile history in his book ‘BOBBINS’. It makes for an interesting read, looking back to when the textile industry was the main employer in Rochdale.

Kelsall & Kemps mills on the site of the Black Box & Bus Station

BOBBINS looks at the history of the town and the families who played an important part in the shaping of the textile industry and Rochdale; the Brights, the Kemps (of Kelsall and Kemp) the Harveys (of Fothergill & Harvey), the Royds, the Smiths, the Walmsleys and the Cleggs, several of whom became members of parliament. e books informs us that Hanging Road Mill, off Toad Lane, was Rochdale’s first cotton mill built in 1791, however, it was not until aer the 1830’s that cotton became the principal production of the town. Eventually, four times as many people were employed in Cotton than in Woollen mills. It was between 1890 and 1910 that the landscape of Rochdale began its dramatic change. e Archetypal ‘Lancashire Cotton Mills” were built, 5 or 6 storeys high, close to the Rochdale canal for the supply of water for their huge Lancashire boilers. With their usual red brick chimney, they oen had short names that would fit on the chimney such as ERA, STAR and CREST. As a young child in the 1950’s I remember vividly my daily trips with my mother to the work’s nursery, when she was employed at 20

Era Ring Mill on Woodbine Street, Rochdale. She worked as a card tenter in the cardroom, which I remember being a dusty, noisy place. e Era mill was opened in 1898 and was described in e Observer at the time as one of the ﬁnest mills of its kind in the town. In its heyday, in the mid 1950’s, it had 60,000 ring spindles, spinning American super quality yarns and employed 450 operatives. e Era mill nursery, where I spent my formative years, catered for 50 children from six months up to the age of ﬁve. I remember our Christmas parties with a visit from Santa and my mother bringing home lots of chocolate at Christmas from her work’s footins. is was a ‘saving up club’ throughout the year and goodies were bought and shared out at Christmas. e Era really looked aer the welfare of its workers, with a spacious garden for workers to relax in and a canteen and dining hall with 450 seats, where up to 300 hot meals were prepared daily for workers at a cost of only eight pence. Sadly, the end of the Era came in the late 1970’s - a victim of synthetic yarns and foreign competition. e famous Fred Dibnah himself knocked down e Era Mill

chimney in April 1979. The MAD Theatre Company in Milnrow recently celebrated forty years of successful productions in the community. Style discovers how it all began…

“What Milnrow needs is an amateur dramatic society!” So said Margaret Hopkinson to her friend (the late) Jean McIntosh back in July 1971. The pair advertised for like-minded people to attend a meeting at St Stephen’s Church Hall and from this Milnrow Amateur Operatic Society was born, later to become The MAD Theatre Company, (meaning Milnrow and District). Having formed a Committee with Margaret's husband, Derek, elected as Chairman, they presented their first play ‘The Bride and the Bachelor’ in April 1972 at the then Roch Valley High School, directed by Allan Marshall. From this successful start and up to the late 1980s they presented twenty-five plays and pantomimes at both Hollingworth High and Milnrow Parish Schools. 24

In early 1981, it was obvious that MADS could no longer afford the hire charges at Hollingworth High and as Milnrow Parish was having major building works the society went into limbo. However, in the summer of 1984, Rev Malcolm Edwards (the vicar of Milnrow Parish Church), offered the use of the school hall for future productions. MADS was back in business presenting "Strike Happy" in February 1985. After such a positive revival the society were devastated when a fire in November of that year at their storage building destroyed all the scenery, props, and costumes. However, with the generous help of North Manchester Operatic and Dramatic Society they were able to present ‘The Patient in 4B’ in February 1986.

Seven Sisters: Catherine Corlett & Zachary Ingham $ECEMBER n -ARCH They have dominated the Rochdale landscape for over 40 years; this year College Bank Flats, known locally as the Seven Sisters, are the focus of seven films created by artists Catherine Corlett and Zachary Ingham. The films were created in the summer of 2011 by positioning cameras at the top of each of the Seven Sisters. The cameras were attached to sails, which rotated on their axis in reaction to the direction of the wind and recorded panoramic views of Rochdale borough and the other towers. The films blur both urban and rural landscapes and challenge our perception of the area. Seven Sisters has been made possible by funding from the John Grant Davies Trust.

People’s Art 2011 5NTIL .OVEMBER The popular annual open exhibition for new and established artists, both amateur and professional, who live or work in the borough of Rochdale. The ‘Art Paddock’ will return to the galleries with lots of hands-on activities for aspiring young artists.

Forest: Darnhill Festival Association & Cartwheel Arts .OVEMBER n *ANUARY A celebration of the Forest Festival held in Darnhill in summer 2011 to mark the UN Year of Forests. The Forest Festival explored the connections between contemporary sculpture, natural materials and traditional crafting skills, through an inclusive community event. This exhibition features community artwork, photography and representations of the Forest theme, created through collaborations between contemporary artists, heritage craftspeople and the Darnhill community.

GIRL ON A TERRACE in February this year rochdale AFC fan, sarah, set up ‘girl On A Terrace’ – a lower league football blog from the perspective of a female football fan. here, sarah talks about how the idea came about and the huge success of her blog so far. It’s tough being a lower league football supporter, let alone being a Rochdale fan. As you all probably know, there’s no hiding that we don’t usually have much to celebrate and it’s hardly a glamorous team to choose to support. But as any Rochdale fan will know, it’s hard not to fall in love with the club. I used to take to Facebook after every game either gloating about our latest win, bleating about another loss or getting frustrated at the lack of support for the team. I quickly realised I had far too much to say for the occasional rant on Facebook. So back in February this year I set up a football blog; ‘Girl On A Terrace’ was born. Originally, I just wanted an outlet for my ranting, but it quickly turned into much more than that and as I write this I have nearly 5,200 followers on Twitter and 10,000 hits on my blog in the last month alone. ‘Girl On A Terrace’ has evolved quite a bit since I set it up; it was originally focussed on Rochdale’s pursuits but I quickly moved away from that to keep it more generic to the lower leagues. I’ve been lucky enough to interview some great people in the football industry, including footballers and well-known journalists and I am always looking for ways to make it more interesting for my readers and to bring them unique features and interviews. I’ve been given some amazing opportunities since starting my blog; writing Rochdale season previews for The Guardian and World Soccer magazine and www.rochdalestyle.com 56

Rochdale fans may also know me from The Voice Of Spotland – the official match day programme – where I have a page every game. It’s hard to believe how far the blog has come in such a short space of time; I never expected so many opportunities to come my way or to receive such an amazing response. I’m very thankful to all those who support what I do and take the time to read my blog. But I’m only just getting started; I have a lot of exciting things for Girl On A Terrace planned for the near and longterm future, which hopefully I’ll be able to share with you another time.

Perhaps my story will persuade more women to take an interest in football or encourage more people to support the lower leagues. My aim right from the start with ‘Girl On A Terrace’ was always to give female football fans in the lower leagues a voice and I hope I’m doing just that. The impact on the business and the family can be tremendous but with careful planning the financial issues can be overcome”. Key person insurance, shareholder or partnership protection are vital in any business planning. Colin spoke about the pension reforms that come into force from October 2012 for the larger businesses. “Many business owners have not

quite realised the serious implications that this new auto-enrolment legislation will have!” This will impact all employers and whilst the smaller companies, (employing 50 or less staff) will not have to comply until possibly 2016 it is essential that you take good advice asap. Employers will have a financial cost to bear and potentially there is a financial advantage for business owners to act sooner rather than later. This legislation is designed by the government to start the savings culture. Unfortunately people are living for longer, they are not saving. They are thinking about today and not planning for tomorrow! The minimum total contribution for eligible employees is 8% of eligible earnings, these contributions split between the employer are (3% min) and the employee and will be phased in the preceding years until 2017. This is going to be a shock for many employers. Peter Carey of Segwick Legal said, “this was an excellent seminar and extremely thought provoking, clearly there is a lot that businesses have to do and they should start making plans now”.

When a friend tells you they are going to open a brewery then they are definitely worth keeping in your address book! When my good friend Peter Geeves decided to start home brewing it was quite different… as he was living on a narrow boat at the time. Two years on, Peter and his family are now an independent, family-run micro brewery based in Barnsley. eir philosophy of real ale is simple; they love drinking it, and now love brewing it. When they first started brewing on their narrow boat, it meant that they had to employ some rather interesting and ingenious brewing methods. However, all was worth the toil in the end as they shaped and defined the recipes they use now. Although they no longer brew on the boat, it was the birth of

their brewing experience and the reason for where they are today. As a result, the wonderful world of the canals and narrow boating theme runs right through their ales. Real ale has always been Peter’s passion and to run his own microbrewery had always been his dream. Such is Pete’s love of ale, it was inevitable his son Harry would follow suit, having found an interest in brewing from an early age. The Riverside, Whitworth, celebrates its fifth anniversary this October. Since 2006, thousands of people have enjoyed the fantastic facilities on offer for birthdays, weddings and christenings. It has firmly established itself at the heart of the community as a venue for church fayres, school and sports club presentations, fitness and health classes. It has also played host to a variety of community events such as family fun days, Whitworth Rushcart, St George day celebrations and the civic carol service.

Over a thousand people turned out for this year’s Rushcart celebrations. Following the procession through Whitworth, the celebrations on the Riverside car park included performances from the eight morris dance troupes and the Whitworth Vale and Healey Band, plus stalls, rides and other entertainments. On offer was real ale named Grogan’s Delight, in memory of Honorary Whitworth Townsman Jimmy Grogan, which sold out!

The Riverside will mark five successful years by holding a Whitworth's Got Talent evening on Friday 28 October and a Stars in your Eyes competition on Saturday 29 October. There will also be an Over 50s Christmas Party on Wednesday 28 December.

Whitworth’s Debut Scarecrow Festival Proves A Big Hit The Scarecrow Festival saw 73 official entries displayed around Whitworth for a week from 511 September, produced by residents, churches, schools, businesses and community organisations. Entries ranged from the inventive to the downright bizarre and the attention to detail was outstanding. Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee which organised the event, commented, “The Scarecrow Festival surpassed everyone’s expectations, both with the standard and number of entries – thanks to all who took part and took the time to visit the displays.”

Hospice care is free for everyone who needs it, but it is not free to provide. Rochdale AFC will raise vital funds for the hospice by organising collections at matches and taking part in various fundraising events. David Praill, chief executive of Help the Hospices, said: “We are delighted to have the chance to work alongside The Football League this season, so that hospices across the UK can continue to care for 360,000 people every year – enough to fill Wembley Stadium four times over. This is an exciting opportunity for local hospices to tell millions of football fans about their important work.”

David is a Lancashire Artist working from his home in Smithy Bridge, Rochdale. He is self taught and has developed an unconventional and unique style of painting watercolours.

RoYAL RECEPTIon FoR VIVIEn Vivien Thompson started volunteering and fundraising following her late husband Frank's first diagnosis of cancer in 1976. Her fundraising provided the first cancer scanner in the area at Bury General Hospital. It was quite an achievement when the machine was installed and officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Her work continued over many years until Frank’s death in 2002. It was at this point that she decided to raise awareness for Marie Curie Cancer Care Service so that every family knew how to access the service. Vivien commented, “The people of Rochdale have supported us fantastically over the years and have helped us raise around £130,000.” This year, Vivien was delighted to receive an invite to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. on the 27th July, escorted by her husband Phillip, she proudly walked through the front doors of The Palace and enjoyed the party alongside The Queen and Prince Phillip.

Midnight Walk Raises Over 20k

Around 170 ladies took part in Springhill Hospice’s Midnight Walk, sponsored by HSBC and supported by Link4Life, which took place on Friday 23rd September. At the stroke of midnight they were set off from Middleton Arena to go to Heywood via Bowlee and Birch, returning to Middleton via Castleton and Slattocks. Sarah Ford, Income Services Lead at the Hospice, said, “The atmosphere on the night was superb with lots of laughter and, between them, a fabulous £21,000 pledged by our walkers. We are fully anticipating this figure to build up as time goes by. Thank you to each and every one of them!”

Care team steps out for Alzheimer’s Society The team from the Rochdale office of care company, Home Instead Senior Care, stepped out to take part in Alzheimer’s Society annual Memory Walk at Heaton Park. The Home Instead team of seven were joined by business owner, David Bradshaw’s son Ben and daughter Abigail raising £125 for the charity between them.

Commenting on the walk, David said: “Home Instead works with people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s on a daily basis so we are more than aware of the issues this presents. We were delighted to support the charity’s Memory Walk.”

CREATIVE FUnDRAISInG number Ten Gallery and gift shop, on Baillie Street, recently held an exhibition to raise money for Springhill Hospice. Rochdale artists Lorraine Dewhurst and Colin Fielding showcased 52 pieces of artwork including watercolours, abstract and acrylic paintings.

The exhibition ran throughout the summer, attracting visitors from across Rochdale and raising £735 for the hospice. The funds raised were also helped by local businesses John Peers, Bragg, Brown’s Cakes and okeechobee.

STEPPInG BACK In TIME Heywood Business Group teamed up with Heywood Charities Fete Committee for a 1940s themed weekend on 3rd and 4th September. Shopkeepers and customers alike enjoyed a weekend of nostalgia and a great deal of fun!

The event included kitchen and clothing window displays, together with brass bands, street entertainers, charity stalls and a tea dance. There was also a 1940s themed market as stallholders joined in with the festivities. The public also looked to the skies as a Dakota of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flew over the town.
