Autumn

Wonderland

Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre was transformed into an autumn wonderland as the latest trends and styles were paraded up and down the catwalk for Rochdale Exchange’s annual fashion show.

Throughout the day customers could get style advice from a fashion guru helping them decide which colours suited them best and Boots offered shoppers mini makeovers and beauty advice.

As twelve o’clock approached the music was turned up loud and the models from Rochdale Exchange came out to strut their stuff. The four shows included daywear, ‘walk in the park’ and of course partywear from Beales, officers Club and River Island.

After every show a free raffle was drawn to win a variety of prizes ranging from £50 vouchers to spend in the centre, a Boots luxury hamper and a beautiful bouquet from Simply flowers in the Rochdale Market.

CHARITY BALL FoR THE CHRISTIE Rochdale Town Hall was awash with glitz and glamour as people arrived for The Rochdale Exchange Vegas night Charity Ball, organised to raise money for The Christie charity. Vegas showgirls greeted guests as they arrived at the Town Hall and enjoyed the champagne reception.

Lorenzo o’Reilly, Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre manger, commented: “The night was a huge success, there was a great turn out and everyone enjoyed themselves, as well as raising a lot of money for The Christie.”

Christine Mathewson, from The Christie added: “It is wonderful that In the Great Hall guests were invited to Rochdale Exchange have selected The play blackjack and roulette before the Christie as their chosen charity for 2011. They have been raising money five course meal was served. Guests were entertained by singing sensation throughout the year and the ball Paul Pashley, best known for singing at alone raised over £6000.” Wayne Rooney’s wedding.

WHERE THERE’S MUCK THERE'S BRASS Local author, Terry Whitworth, delves into Rochdale’s famous textile history in his book ‘BOBBINS’. It makes for an interesting read, looking back to when the textile industry was the main employer in Rochdale.

Kelsall & Kemps mills on the site of the Black Box & Bus Station

BOBBINS looks at the history of the town and the families who played an important part in the shaping of the textile industry and Rochdale; the Brights, the Kemps (of Kelsall and Kemp) the Harveys (of Fothergill & Harvey), the Royds, the Smiths, the Walmsleys and the Cleggs, several of whom became members of parliament. e books informs us that Hanging Road Mill, off Toad Lane, was Rochdale’s first cotton mill built in 1791, however, it was not until aer the 1830’s that cotton became the principal production of the town. Eventually, four times as many people were employed in Cotton than in Woollen mills. It was between 1890 and 1910 that the landscape of Rochdale began its dramatic change. e Archetypal ‘Lancashire Cotton Mills” were built, 5 or 6 storeys high, close to the Rochdale canal for the supply of water for their huge Lancashire boilers. With their usual red brick chimney, they oen had short names that would fit on the chimney such as ERA, STAR and CREST. As a young child in the 1950’s I remember vividly my daily trips with my mother to the work’s nursery, when she was employed at 20

www.rochdalestyle.com

Era Ring Mill on Woodbine Street, Rochdale. She worked as a card tenter in the cardroom, which I remember being a dusty, noisy place. e Era mill was opened in 1898 and was described in e Observer at the time as one of the finest mills of its kind in the town. In its heyday, in the mid 1950’s, it had 60,000 ring spindles, spinning American super quality yarns and employed 450 operatives. e Era mill nursery, where I spent my formative years, catered for 50 children from six months up to the age of five. I remember our Christmas parties with a visit from Santa and my mother bringing home lots of chocolate at Christmas from her work’s footins. is was a ‘saving up club’ throughout the year and goodies were bought and shared out at Christmas. e Era really looked aer the welfare of its workers, with a spacious garden for workers to relax in and a canteen and dining hall with 450 seats, where up to 300 hot meals were prepared daily for workers at a cost of only eight pence. Sadly, the end of the Era came in the late 1970’s - a victim of synthetic yarns and foreign competition. e famous Fred Dibnah himself knocked down e Era Mill

chimney in April 1979. Discover more about Rochdale’s textile days; priced at only £7.50 BOBBINS can be purchased from George Kelsall Books in Littleborough or from Touchstones on the Esplanade… a great Christmas gi idea. Turn to our competitions (page 77) for your chance to win a copy. Colin Meredith

Actor’s

An

Life

for me

Many people may not have heard of actor Jim Whelan, but you’ll have seen his face many times. He has appeared in some of the most iconic programmes on British television over the past four decades, from Crown Court and Last of the Summer Wine to The Royle Family and Heartbeat.

J

im even ranks up there with Bill Roach, being one of only a handful of actors to have appeared in Coronation Street in every decade since it began. Since his first appearance in 1965, Jim has played six different characters but he’s best known as the Vicar of Weatherfield. To this very day, Jim is still Corrie’s resident vicar – he’s married people, buried others and even tried to stop fights breaking out in his church! With a varied career, Jim has recently been up and down the country catching 22

www.rochdalestyle.com

crooks, working on BBC’s Rogue Traders. Jim’s new autobiography, What a Life!, is the story of his passion for acting and his determination to follow his dream at all costs. From humble beginnings and an unpromising start, leaving school with no qualifications and few job prospects, Jim went on to enjoy a long TV career, receiving accolades from respected directors and working alongside such famous actors as Ray Winstone, Martin Clunes, David Tennant, Christian Bale and Rod Steiger. The autobiography explains how a shy and insecure Salford boy went from being a dockland worker to become a recurring character in Coronation Street and documents the successes and disappointments of a jobbing actor. In an honest account of his life Jim spills the beans on some of the big name stars he has worked with and provides the reader with a fascinating insight to the television industry and some of the larger than life characters who inhabit the world of ‘soap’.

Jim’s autobiography has already received rave reviews. Roy Barraclough, also known as Alec Gilroy, ex-landlord of the Rover’s Return, commented “Jim has a colourful tale to tell”. This book is a riveting read that is certain to hold your attention from the first page to the last. ‘What A Life’ as an instantly downloadable e-book, available on Amazon.

W O R N L I M N I D TI ’S A MAD WORL pany MADS Theatre Com

The MAD Theatre Company in Milnrow recently celebrated forty years of successful productions in the community. Style discovers how it all began…

“What Milnrow needs is an amateur dramatic society!” So said Margaret Hopkinson to her friend (the late) Jean McIntosh back in July 1971. The pair advertised for like-minded people to attend a meeting at St Stephen’s Church Hall and from this Milnrow Amateur Operatic Society was born, later to become The MAD Theatre Company, (meaning Milnrow and District). Having formed a Committee with Margaret's husband, Derek, elected as Chairman, they presented their first play ‘The Bride and the Bachelor’ in April 1972 at the then Roch Valley High School, directed by Allan Marshall. From this successful start and up to the late 1980s they presented twenty-five plays and pantomimes at both Hollingworth High and Milnrow Parish Schools. 24

www.rochdalestyle.com

In early 1981, it was obvious that MADS could no longer afford the hire charges at Hollingworth High and as Milnrow Parish was having major building works the society went into limbo. However, in the summer of 1984, Rev Malcolm Edwards (the vicar of Milnrow Parish Church), offered the use of the school hall for future productions. MADS was back in business presenting "Strike Happy" in February 1985. After such a positive revival the society were devastated when a fire in November of that year at their storage building destroyed all the scenery, props, and costumes. However, with the generous help of North Manchester Operatic and Dramatic Society they were able to present ‘The Patient in 4B’ in February 1986.

Murder At The Vicarage 2005

Bonaventure 1974 Since then, they've gone from strength to strength presenting many comedies, thrillers and pantomimes. Their next production Gameplan by Alan Ayckbourn runs from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th November 2011, at Milnrow Parish School Hall, St James Street at 7.30 each evening. Tickets can be booked on 07854123894 or by email to paulinebrett@talktalk.net. n

'It's recently been said that, Cloud Computing Technology is set to define the future. According to the Financial Times, no single IT advance has been so vigorously marketed as cloud computing. "Five or ten years from now, the cloud will not be an element in the IT sky – it will be the sky itself," the newsprovider stated. It suggested that few businesspeople will spend much time thinking about cloud-based computing, they will simply get on with utilising it. The Financial Times claimed that most people in the developed world will be connected to the cloud in some fashion, unlocking "a tremendous amount of opportunity and wealth". "The cloud will enable companies to deploy new capabilities in radically new ways," the news provider stated. "It will change the way businesses operate by eliminating many cost-related barriers to market entry, enabling the assembly of new business processes and data on demand."

Local retailers value your support and will usually go out of their way to help you find the perfect item and make sure you have a pleasant shopping experience.

You can avoid the hoards of stressed-out shoppers and mile-long queues!

Shopping locally helps to preserve choice and diversity. The element of surprise and discovery is almost completely lost in large chain stores. However, in a small local retailer you can often find all sorts of unexpected treasures and original gift ideas. It helps to strengthen the local economy. If your money is spent with a national business, it is likely to be used to buy goods and services from outside the area. A local business will use far more local services, keeping that money in the local economy.

5

Independent business owners are good neighbours! They live here too, which means they care about the local community. Local businesses are often generous supporters of local charity and community events.

6 7 8 9 10

You can save time and money on travel and parking costs… whilst helping to reduce your carbon footprint. There’s also free parking after 3pm in Rochdale Town Centre. Many independent retailers, such as Sandifords, Denis Hope and Chantilly, will even wrap the Christmas presents for you, to make your gift look even more special and save you the hassle! Local retailers offer great discounts and offers. Visit www.loverochdale.co.uk/shoppers_register.php to register for your free Love Rochdale discount card.

Local retailers like to build lasting relationships with their customers, in a way that larger chain stores struggle to do. Somewhere you frequently give custom is likely to look after you and maybe even give you a discount for being a valued ‘regular’! And last but not least, it is Rochdale’s fantastic independent retailers who keep this magazine going, through their advertising. If you enjoy reading Style, please support our advertisers, so we can continue to bring you more good news about Rochdale.

With a wide range of quality products and gifts available right here on your doorstep, why not support Rochdale’s independent retailers this Christmas. Take a closer look at the advertisements in this edition, you’ll find plenty of gift inspiration. Ruth Meredith

Jewel tones

Tunics and Trousers

Amethyst, sapphire, emerald, garnet, citrine. If you’re brave enough go for one colour, head-to-toe. Or just let your accessories do the sparkling, with clutch bags, heels or oversized jewel rings in ruby-red or emerald green.

Effortlessly chic, relaxed and loose – great for hiding the Christmas dinner!! Blocks of colour will add interest.

Plaid It’s the new denim. If you’re not keen on head-to-toe tartan try an oversized scarf or other check accessory.

Onesies

The wide-legged one piece is a fabulous party piece, in silk or satin. Minimal accessories are needed… just sky-high heels!

Androgyny Borrow off the boy’s this season… pinstripes, white shirts and trousers, white silk ties and overcoats. Think collars, layering and sharp edges.

Polka dots Think dresses, coats & pencil skirts, with subtle small spots or bold bright dots! If you’re new to prints & patterns, dots are a good way to get started and are easy to wear. Don’t forget a dotty pair of wellies!

vintage Forties glamour – think pencil skirts, pussy bow blouses, furs, pearls, gloves, shrugs and tea dresses for a feminine, yet confident look. Figure flattering and fabulous!

SeruM In the CitY there’s one to suit everyone, they give you a boost, leave you looking and feeling fantastic, they can balance, lift, matify, brighten, soothe... what am i talking about? Serums! Serums from a professional skin care brand can be as personal as your choice of cocktail, whether you’re like Sex in the City’s Carrie Bradshaw and chose a Cosmopolitan or like the other Sex in the City girlies and prefer a Martini or Manhattan, similarly skincare can be as tailor-made as your choice of cocktail. Good skincare brands are aware we are all individuals and it is this realisation of our uniqueness and personal needs that lends itself to such a variety of serums for our skin.

Serums are specific, so no matter what your concern there is a serum that will work to target your specific needs, fixing the problem. Face creams work to visibly embellish, hydrate and protect the skin from everyday aggressors such as pollution, air conditioning, heating and the other aggressors we face in our daily lives. However creams only work to make the surface of the skin ‘appear’ well. The serums actually repair the concern, maintaining and regulating the production of whatever our skin is lacking.

Cloud Nylon: The Jewellery of Nora Fok $ECEMBER n -ARCH Nora Fok is a pioneering contemporary jeweller who works with ordinary materials to create extraordinary pieces from familiar forms to large wearable sculptures. The processes Nora uses – knitting, weaving, crocheting & knotting – transform linear nylon monofilament into complex structures, inspiredby her fascination with the natural world and the mathematical modelsthat underpin it. Touchstones Rochdale is the only North West venue for Nora’s exhibition. You can find out more about the exhibition at www. cloudnylon.comA Harley Gallery touring exhibition directed by Brochocka Baynes and supported by the Arts Council.

Seven Sisters: Catherine Corlett & Zachary Ingham $ECEMBER n -ARCH They have dominated the Rochdale landscape for over 40 years; this year College Bank Flats, known locally as the Seven Sisters, are the focus of seven films created by artists Catherine Corlett and Zachary Ingham. The films were created in the summer of 2011 by positioning cameras at the top of each of the Seven Sisters. The cameras were attached to sails, which rotated on their axis in reaction to the direction of the wind and recorded panoramic views of Rochdale borough and the other towers. The films blur both urban and rural landscapes and challenge our perception of the area. Seven Sisters has been made possible by funding from the John Grant Davies Trust.

People’s Art 2011 5NTIL .OVEMBER The popular annual open exhibition for new and established artists, both amateur and professional, who live or work in the borough of Rochdale. The ‘Art Paddock’ will return to the galleries with lots of hands-on activities for aspiring young artists.

Gallery One shows include:

Lucy McChrystal Plimmer & Harriet Whittaker 5NTIL .OVEMBER Lucy McChrystal Plimmer and Harriet Whittaker are both recent graduates of textile-related degree courses and are showing their work together for the first time at the suggestion of the Gallery One community panel.

Forest: Darnhill Festival Association & Cartwheel Arts .OVEMBER n *ANUARY A celebration of the Forest Festival held in Darnhill in summer 2011 to mark the UN Year of Forests. The Forest Festival explored the connections between contemporary sculpture, natural materials and traditional crafting skills, through an inclusive community event. This exhibition features community artwork, photography and representations of the Forest theme, created through collaborations between contemporary artists, heritage craftspeople and the Darnhill community.

Spring Bank Mill Collective 3ATURDAY &EBRUARY TO 3ATURDAY !PRIL Artists Lewis Brownlie and Jonny Boxall curated a group show, ‘Child’s Play’ at Spring Bank Mill in Whitworth in 2011 and now bring this informal collective to Touchstones Rochdale.

It’s tough being a lower league football supporter, let alone being a Rochdale fan. As you all probably know, there’s no hiding that we don’t usually have much to celebrate and it’s hardly a glamorous team to choose to support. But as any Rochdale fan will know, it’s hard not to fall in love with the club. I used to take to Facebook after every game either gloating about our latest win, bleating about another loss or getting frustrated at the lack of support for the team. I quickly realised I had far too much to say for the occasional rant on Facebook. So back in February this year I set up a football blog; ‘Girl On A Terrace’ was born. Originally, I just wanted an outlet for my ranting, but it quickly turned into much more than that and as I write this I have nearly 5,200 followers on Twitter and 10,000 hits on my blog in the last month alone. ‘Girl On A Terrace’ has evolved quite a bit since I set it up; it was originally focussed on Rochdale’s pursuits but I quickly moved away from that to keep it more generic to the lower leagues. I’ve been lucky enough to interview some great people in the football industry, including footballers and well-known journalists and I am always looking for ways to make it more interesting for my readers and to bring them unique features and interviews. I’ve been given some amazing opportunities since starting my blog; writing Rochdale season previews for The Guardian and World Soccer magazine and www.rochdalestyle.com 56

“I never expected so many opportunities to come my way or to receive such an amazing response”. being part of the football league blogosphere on The Guardian website. Rochdale fans may also know me from The Voice Of Spotland – the official match day programme – where I have a page every game. It’s hard to believe how far the blog has come in such a short space of time; I never expected so many opportunities to come my way or to receive such an amazing response. I’m very thankful to all those who support what I do and take the time to read my blog. But I’m only just getting started; I have a lot of exciting things for Girl On A Terrace planned for the near and longterm future, which hopefully I’ll be able to share with you another time.

Perhaps my story will persuade more women to take an interest in football or encourage more people to support the lower leagues. My aim right from the start with ‘Girl On A Terrace’ was always to give female football fans in the lower leagues a voice and I hope I’m doing just that. You can read my football blog at www.girlonaterrace.com and follow me on Twitter @girlonaterrace.

CTL WEALTH In September CTL Wealth Management Ltd hosted two seminars to aid local businesses and their professional advisers on business protection issues and the impending pension reforms.

Justin urquhart Stewart of Seven investment Management, discussed pitfalls of being a trustee, he also covered the economic and investment issues in the world stockmarkets which helped most people feel more positive about their business outlook. Neil Jackson did a session on ‘Could your business survive a heart attack’? and spoke of how small limited companies and employees of such firms could now potentially make significant savings on life insurance premiums. Colin T Lambert director of CTL Wealth Management Ltd. says “ the seminars were designed to inform business owners of the ‘people risk’ in their businesses and what steps could be taken to protect their business, their livelihoods and therefore their entire lifestyle and family security.” “We all know someone, who has had a serious illness, accident or died prematurely. The impact on the business and the family can be tremendous but with careful planning the financial issues can be overcome”. Key person insurance, shareholder or partnership protection are vital in any business planning. Colin spoke about the pension reforms that come into force from October 2012 for the larger businesses. “Many business owners have not

quite realised the serious implications that this new auto-enrolment legislation will have!” This will impact all employers and whilst the smaller companies, (employing 50 or less staff) will not have to comply until possibly 2016 it is essential that you take good advice asap. Employers will have a financial cost to bear and potentially there is a financial advantage for business owners to act sooner rather than later. This legislation is designed by the government to start the savings culture. Unfortunately people are living for longer, they are not saving. They are thinking about today and not planning for tomorrow! The minimum total contribution for eligible employees is 8% of eligible earnings, these contributions split between the employer are (3% min) and the employee and will be phased in the preceding years until 2017. This is going to be a shock for many employers. Peter Carey of Segwick Legal said, “this was an excellent seminar and extremely thought provoking, clearly there is a lot that businesses have to do and they should start making plans now”.

For a free initial meeting about any of the above areas or other financial planning needs for individuals or business please contact Colin on 01706 622 511 or colin@ctl-ifa.co.uk.

When a friend tells you they are going to open a brewery then they are definitely worth keeping in your address book! When my good friend Peter Geeves decided to start home brewing it was quite different… as he was living on a narrow boat at the time. Two years on, Peter and his family are now an independent, family-run micro brewery based in Barnsley. eir philosophy of real ale is simple; they love drinking it, and now love brewing it. When they first started brewing on their narrow boat, it meant that they had to employ some rather interesting and ingenious brewing methods. However, all was worth the toil in the end as they shaped and defined the recipes they use now. Although they no longer brew on the boat, it was the birth of

their brewing experience and the reason for where they are today. As a result, the wonderful world of the canals and narrow boating theme runs right through their ales. Real ale has always been Peter’s passion and to run his own microbrewery had always been his dream. Such is Pete’s love of ale, it was inevitable his son Harry would follow suit, having found an interest in brewing from an early age. It is with much enthusiasm that he now dedicates himself to the pursuit of brewing great beer. e Geeves Brewery team now comprises of the father and son duo, and not forgetting their two lovely assistants and excellent cask washers, Sue Geeves and Lorna Middleton.

In September, Style magazine went along to Geeves Brewery’s official launch at the Huntsman, in urlstone, near Barnsley. e Brewery are concentrating on supplying their beer to the South Yorkshire area but are willing to deliver further afield and due to our friendship they have supplied locally to Simon Crompton at e Baum, Toad lane, Rochdale. www.geevesbrewery.co.uk. JuSt GASSInG…

Now that the weather has started to turn, summer holidays spent lazing in the sun seem like a distant memory. Due to the crippling exchange rate of the Euro, it was the USA where we headed which seemed best value for money, in more ways than one, when price of travelling internally is calculated at only 67p per litre.

Never knowing when they are on to a good deal, most of the locals I spoke to were apoplectic with the high prices they were enduring and most people were eagerly eyeing up the all-electric Nissan Leaf as an alternative. But there was another way. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is emerging as a popular fuel choice over in the States thanks to a process called fracking, which releases gas from within shale rocks. Luckily, Lancashire and the Fylde coast in particular, according to a recent report are sat on enough of this gas to power the UK for 50 years according to some estimates. So assuming we can extract this gas safely and cheaply, what might it be used to power? HONDA CIVIC

ar’s Rushcart Family Fun At This Ye

The Riverside, Whitworth, celebrates its fifth anniversary this October. Since 2006, thousands of people have enjoyed the fantastic facilities on offer for birthdays, weddings and christenings. It has firmly established itself at the heart of the community as a venue for church fayres, school and sports club presentations, fitness and health classes. It has also played host to a variety of community events such as family fun days, Whitworth Rushcart, St George day celebrations and the civic carol service.

Over a thousand people turned out for this year’s Rushcart celebrations. Following the procession through Whitworth, the celebrations on the Riverside car park included performances from the eight morris dance troupes and the Whitworth Vale and Healey Band, plus stalls, rides and other entertainments. On offer was real ale named Grogan’s Delight, in memory of Honorary Whitworth Townsman Jimmy Grogan, which sold out!

The Riverside will mark five successful years by holding a Whitworth's Got Talent evening on Friday 28 October and a Stars in your Eyes competition on Saturday 29 October. There will also be an Over 50s Christmas Party on Wednesday 28 December.

Whitworth’s Debut Scarecrow Festival Proves A Big Hit The Scarecrow Festival saw 73 official entries displayed around Whitworth for a week from 511 September, produced by residents, churches, schools, businesses and community organisations. Entries ranged from the inventive to the downright bizarre and the attention to detail was outstanding. Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee which organised the event, commented, “The Scarecrow Festival surpassed everyone’s expectations, both with the standard and number of entries – thanks to all who took part and took the time to visit the displays.”

RY… DATE FOR YOUR DIA On Sunday 13 November, Whitworth residents young and old will gather to remember those lost and injured during times of conflict.

Whitworth Vale and Healey Brass Band, local uniformed organisations, Lancashire Constabulary and many others.

The town’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations will begin with the Remembrance Sunday procession, which will leave from opposite the former Town Council Offices at 10.20am. The procession will be led by Whitworth’s Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Mr Dave Bradbury and Ms Angela Gerrard, who will be supported by the

The procession will arrive at Whitworth’s Memorial Gardens in Facit at approximately 10.40am and will be followed immediately by a Service of Remembrance around the Cenotaph, including a two-minute silence at 11am. Watch out on ITV1 from late October as Andrew Nutter battles it out against the UK's most talented chefs - will his dish tantalise the judge’s taste buds? Nutter’s chocolate sweet box is a dish based on childhood memories - think honeycomb, nutty brittle, marshmallow fluff, chocolate brownies, chewy flapjack and lots of calories. The box contains many sweet elements so why try one component, nutty brittle… it truly is a sweet treat!

WHaT IS PHySIOTHERaPy? when we move, our bodies find the easiest way of doing it. if we injure ourselves our movements change. sometimes these changes are not corrected and can lead to long term problems. physiotherapists can help with the healing of an acute injury or illness and correct the compensatory effects. recovery from a sprained ankle or broken arm may include exercises to regain movement, strength and function. arthritis in the back or neck may need mobilisations and techniques such as acupuncture for pain relief. advice about any rheumatological condition can be given by our clinical rheumatology specialist, lucy knott. it is often said prevention is better than cure and improving the stability of our bodies’ movements with pilates in the small groups we run at the physiotherapy clinic is a great way to achieve this. there are groups suitable for every age and ability.

current research suggests the foundation of all movements requires the deep abdominal muscles to switch on first. pilates focuses specifically on these muscles right through to elite level sport but if that pelvic floor is losing its grip, our women’s health specialist caroline dungworth may be able to help. if you are a keen sportsman leanne tipple msc can assess your risk of injury using the pp4p athlete screening system (www.pp4p.co.uk) which will provide you with a personalised injury prevention programme. Great for pre-season preparation! if just reading all this is making you dizzy or breathless, cari thorpe looks at problems which can cause dizziness including Bppv. kathryn meigh focuses on respiratory problems.

RoYAL RECEPTIon FoR VIVIEn Vivien Thompson started volunteering and fundraising following her late husband Frank's first diagnosis of cancer in 1976. Her fundraising provided the first cancer scanner in the area at Bury General Hospital. It was quite an achievement when the machine was installed and officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Her work continued over many years until Frank’s death in 2002. It was at this point that she decided to raise awareness for Marie Curie Cancer Care Service so that every family knew how to access the service. Vivien commented, “The people of Rochdale have supported us fantastically over the years and have helped us raise around £130,000.” This year, Vivien was delighted to receive an invite to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. on the 27th July, escorted by her husband Phillip, she proudly walked through the front doors of The Palace and enjoyed the party alongside The Queen and Prince Phillip.

At the stroke of midnight they were set off from Middleton Arena to go to Heywood via Bowlee and Birch, returning to Middleton via Castleton and Slattocks. Sarah Ford, Income Services Lead at the Hospice, said, “The atmosphere on the night was superb with lots of laughter and, between them, a fabulous £21,000 pledged by our walkers. We are fully anticipating this figure to build up as time goes by. Thank you to each and every one of them!”

Amanda Crowe, from Boots in Rochdale, was a driving force behind a charity event held recently at The norton Grange Hotel, which raised nearly £3000 for a number of charities. Rochdale actress Meg Johnson, who plays Pearl
