Filming Consequence on Freehold Estate, Rochdale

STylE EXclUSIVE Local Actor Luke Tittensor Heywood actor, luke Tittensor, is just 20 years old, but already has credits such as Emmerdale, Shameless, Waterloo Road, Brookside and Doctors to his name. He is best known for playing Daz Eden, in Emmerdale, from 2003 until 2009.

L

uke will soon be back on our screens, starring in a new BBC series The Accused, by Jimmy McGovern. The young actor has also recently filmed Consequence, a short film, by James Statham, which was made right here in Rochdale. I recently caught up with Luke, to discuss filming in his hometown, crying scenes and why ‘it’s nice to be nice’! Where are you from? I was born in Openshaw, then moved to Bury when I was 5 years old. I moved to Heywood when I was about 8 years old and I still live here now, with my twin brother, Elliott, and two mates. It’s awesome!

6

www.rochdalestyle.com

What was your first acting role? I first got into acting when a casting director came into my school to hold auditions. Me and my mates just thought we would audition for a laugh, but then I ended up getting the part! It was for a BBC Drama called Real Men. After that, me and Elliott were asked if we fancied taking up acting. We’d never thought of it before, but we were introduced to a drama class and it just took off from there really. Your twin brother plays Carl in Shameless, a role you once shared? Yes, we both started off sharing the role in the first series of Shameless. We looked more similar then though! And then I got the part of Daz in Emmerdale and Elliott carried on playing Carl in Shameless.

What have you been up to recently? I’ve just finished filming a new BBC One series, by Jimmy McGovern, called The Accused. It’s a six by 60-minute series, which focuses on individual lead characters that, at the start of each episode, are accused of committing a crime. Each episode ends with a court trial and you don’t know whether the character will be innocent or guilty. It takes you on the journey of how they got to that point. I’m in the second episode and the story is mainly about my dad, who is played by Christopher Eccleston, but my character comes in and out of it. I’ve also filmed a short film called Consequence, by James Statham, a writer & director from Rochdale. I played the main character, Patrick, and we filmed it in and around Freehold Estate over four days in April. It was good fun! The script is mint.

What attracted you to the film? I just wanted to do something a bit grittier than what i’ve done in the past. When James sent me the script I was buzzing. I’ve worked on things like Emmerdale, Waterloo Road and Doctors and they are all pretty similar. So it’s good to get out there and do something a bit different. How would you describe your character in Consequence? Patrick hasn’t had a great upbringing; his dad’s on the run and his mum is a heroin addict, but he wants to break away from it and take his family out of the situation. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and wants to make a better life.

Exclusive photographs from behind the scenes of Consequence; a short film made in Rochdale, in April. Consequence is a gritty drama written, directed and produced by James Statham. The film depicts a harsh scenario facing a young man (Patrick) with a heroin addict as a mother and a disabled little sister. Their father fled the country several years earlier. After a violent visit from the local drug dealer, the young man, now the head of this suffering family, is faced with some difficult decisions. The film delves deep into the mind of Patrick and the unexpected consequences of events beyond his control. Think Butterfly effect crossed with Shameless.

The film is currently in post production and is being submitted to various film festivals. We look forward to more exciting updates…watch this space!

Was it a tough role? Yes, there were plenty of crying scenes and angry scenes! Although, I got such a buzz after I had filmed them and they had gone well. I quite enjoyed doing them actually. I like doing stuff that’s challenging. Did you enjoy filming on location around Rochdale? It was great. There were loads of people about, who were interested in the filming and it was good chatting to them. I prefer shooting on location actually. It’s something about being there and taking everything in - it helps me get into character. Do you get recognised a lot? To be honest, most people think they recognise me from Shameless. Everyone is sound though. I’m a massive Man Utd fan and when I met Giggs once I was buzzing! So i’m nice to everyone that recognises me, cause you never know when you could make someone’s day. It’s nice to be nice!

FILMInG: Director, James Statham with Luke Tittensor and actress, Kathryn George (Hollyoaks).

Who are your acting role models? I think Leonardo DiCaprio is awesome and so underrated. And Johnny Depp is an obvious one, he’s a legend. I’m inspired by my friends and people i’ve worked with too, like Jo Gilgun who played Eli on Emmerdale, he’s a great actor. What are your ambitions for the future? I just want to be a working actor and respected for what I do. If I was a brickie, i’d want to be known for being the best brickie! So that’s the main thing. I just hope that people like my work and think that i’m good at what I do! Fingers crossed.

DIScOVERING NEW MUSIc Style recently caught up with Rochdale-born singer and songwriter, Kayleah Buckley, better known as music sensation oh!Kay. How did you get into music?

I used to be in local stage shows with my mum when I was younger and that's how I got into singing and performing. I’ve just turned 18 and have been oh!Kay since I was 13, but have been writing since I was very young. Do you make your own music?

Yes, I make all my own music and write all the lyrics myself. I create the music using Reason, Acid, and Cubase and I am constantly writing lyrics on my blackberry on the bus! Describe your style of music…

Electro pop! Very individual… like my fashion sense! Where can we listen to it?

Myspace: www.myspace.com/ohkayohkay Youtube: www.youtube.com/ohkaymusic Facebook: oH!KAY 8

www.rochdalestyle.com

Who is your inspiration?

My mum has really inspired me from the start and I want to fulfil the dream she left behind. other inspirations are the likes of Lady Gaga and Pink! - I love how they stand out with their individuality. What have you enjoyed most about being Oh!Kay, up to now?

Definitely the BBC Introducing experience. I was invited to sing live on Radio Lancashire for BBC Introducing a few months ago and it was amazing! I really loved being able to express myself to a wide range of listeners. What are you up to at the moment?

I’ve just finished my college course of Music Technology and I am set to attend university

at Leeds Metropolitan in September. However, I am hoping for an apprenticeship where I can get more hands-on experience in the music industry. What are your ambitions for the future?

My ambition is to be a successful singer songwriter. Hopefully, my music will be showcased in Series 5 of Channel Four’s 'Skins', which sounds really exciting! I won't stop until my name is in neon lights!n Ruth Meredith

A survey showing how well we look after our eyesight has revealed that 20% of people in Rochdale confess to ‘putting up’ with painful headaches, linked to poor vision, rather than seeking help from an optician.

Craven & Murray opticians, norden said: “It’s worrying that even painful headaches aren’t enough to force people into going for an eye test and that so many people are putting their eye health at risk.

The survey of 3,000 people was commissioned by the www.eyelovelocal.co.uk and was conducted by one Poll.

Wendy added: “We’d like to see more people placing greater emphasis on the health of their eyes and in doing so, discover the value of visiting an independent optician.

It shows just how little care people take these days with their eyesight, with a quarter admitting to not having been for an eye test for more than two years, despite 45% thinking they would benefit. Even more worrying is that half said they would only go to the opticians if there was a problem with their eyesight. Analysing the findings of the survey, Wendy Craven,

The Eye Love My Local Independent optician campaign is keen to highlight that independent opticians have been an integral part of community life for decades and continue to play a vital role in serving the eye care needs of local people.

Yorkshire St was the artery from which other streets evolved, increasing the area of retail opportunity. Cheetham St, once north Gate, an early highway, had speciality shops from Victorian times.

Yorkshire Street busy with shoppers before the redevelopment started in 1973.

T

he presence of woollen dealers and shuttle makers bears witness to the early textile industry. Many inns, built along the street, served the merchants who came to trade, many

from over the Pennines. As the street was one of the major routes out of town, it became known as Yorkshire St. For a time, it had been

named Broad St, when the ancient narrow street had been widened.

12

The area grew in importance when the market was re-sited from church lane to the bottom of yorkshire St. There are metal studs in the pavement outside lloyds Bank, which indicate the position of the old Market cross.

Up to the mid 19th century, businesses were mostly individually or family owned, the exception being The Rochdale Pioneers store, opened in 1844 on Toad lane. From the 1870’s onwards, the multi-chain stores began to appear.

At the end of the 18th century, as Rochdale grew from a market to a mill town and the population increased dramatically, there was an increased demand for local products and goods and a variety of shops and services.

A local rags to riches story is that of James Duckworth; once a poor doffer in a cotton mill, he hawked the sale of tea from house to house and later became a shop and warehouse owner. Eventually, James

www.rochdalestyle.com

Duckworth ltd had more than 80 branches, including the popular ‘Jimmy Duck’s’ at the bottom of yorkshire St, near The Walk. Rival stores included the Maypole, liptons and Redmans. Sales were over the counter and all goods were openly displayed. Before the days of pre-packaging and selfservice, the shop assistants weighed and packed goods by hand. Such shops had a tantalizing aroma; a smell of roasting coffee beans, mixed spices and cheeses. However,

The Changing Face of Yorkshire Street in general stores, which sold everything, the smell of paraffin and fire lighters often predominated! Before the present Town Hall was built, yorkshire St once had a leading role in the administration of the town’s affairs. A two storey Town Hall was situated at the corner of Blackwater St, later to become lord St, which served as a trading exchange for woollen and flannel merchants.

The 1900’s saw an ever-increasing array of goods on sale, with new technology and new innovations. Radios and vacuum cleaners were the must-buy items at this time! National chain stores soon came on the scene; Marks and Spencers, littlewoods, Woolworths, Boots and Timothy Whites all opened branches. In 1936, a significant development took place at the bottom of yorkshire St, when Rochdale corporation bought the Market Rights and were able to move the market stalls, which were causing much congestion to another venue.

Yorkshire street showing James Duckworth Ltd greengrocers at the top of the walk now HBoS.

All local traders were faced with increasing competition with the growth of the supermarket and large retail outlets. The first supermarket in 1963 was lennons, situated at the junction of yorkshire St and Whitworth Rd, previously the premises of the Townhead Providing company. The new store caused a stir by staying open all day on a Tuesday, breaking a long tradition of half day closing.

Many shop facades, particularly the upper storeys, show traces of their original Victorian and Edwardian features. One example is lovicks furniture store, founded in 1919 and still a successful store today. The building was originally Rochdale’s first infirmary.

My own memories of shops in the 60’s onwards include Ellwood’s Fabrics for curtain and dress making materials, The Bon Bon café, Prestons of Bolton, The Army & Navy Stores, Sharrocks & Sharrocks Music Shop, The Games corner and Seniors, the high class outfitters, established in 1919 and sadly closed in 2001.

yorkshire St was the artery from which other streets evolved, increasing the area of retail opportunity. cheetham St, once North Gate, an early highway, had speciality shops from Victorian times. Another rival shopping street was Drake St – the subject of a future article. The first large departmental store in the town was The Rochdale Pionners central Store, on Toad lane, which opened in 1867.

Plans were aired in the 1960’s for a new shopping centre, but it was 1973 before the scheme began, involving major demolition and building work. The Rochdale Exchange Shopping centre, costing seven million pounds, was officially opened by Gracie Fields, in 1978, during her last visit to her hometown. She died the following year on the island of capri. The laing Development’s gift to the town,

the sheep statue, graces the entrance to the precinct from yorkshire St. The Wheatsheaf centre, with 33 shops and 5 stores opened to the public in 1990, on the site of a former woollen mill and a variety of businesses. Modern developments along yorkshire St include Sunday trading and increased pedestrianisation. Who knows what the future will bring! Plans for re-development of the Town centre are still undecided. Unfortunately, many local shops including some famous names and long established businesses have met their demise recently. Our existing retailers, particularly our speciality shops, which give character to the town, need local support. It is hoped, in the future, that yorkshire St can recapture its vitality of earlier years..n Margaret Clay Local Historian & Blue Badge Guide

SUCCESS

ON THE FIELD

With success on the field, Rochdale RUFC has been promoted through the leagues in recent years and has represented Lancashire, with some players going on to play at a high level. The club runs four senior sides, in addition to the largest and most vibrant youth and mini section in the north West. The club has recently been awarded the Rugby Football Union and Sport England's Whole Club Seal of Approval, the highest possible standard of quality assurance. They also fund a successful, long-standing community rugby development programme, and the club is active in more than twenty local schools through their youth development scheme. Rochdale Minis and Juniors have a long and proud tradition of coaching and supporting the development of teams from Under 7’s to Under 18’s. They offer opportunities for both boys and girls to learn life skills though the medium of rugby. The Rochdale Under 12’s are looking for sponsorship from businesses for the coming 2010 – 2011 season. This sponsorship will cover items such as playing & training kit, training equipment, kit bags, match balls, polo shirts, trophies, tournaments and team tours. In return, sponsors can expect logos on match and training kits, press coverage in local papers and magazines, and participation in rugby and social events throughout the year.

The side has had a great year, beating many age-old rivals for the first time, as they improved in skills and ability, playing exciting attacking rugby against bigger and more physical players. The season culminated in a semi-final placing in the Driffield yorkshire Plate tournament, where they were defeated in a hard fought and close-scoring game. If you are interested in promoting your business, while at the same time, helping the Under 12’s to achieve greater success this year, please email the under 12’s manager Brian Robinson: brian.robinson19@btinternet.com

Maxi-dresses are a big hit this season and with so many striking colours and patterns to choose from, you are bound to find the perfect one… or two! e maxi dress is a multi-tasking garment that you can wear literally anywhere. It’s definitely worth investing in one this summer and you won’t have to look far - 25Ten Boutique on Cheetham St have a great selection.

is summer is all about floral and tribal prints, and the same applies for swimwear. ere are lots of different styles and prints around at the moment, so experiment to find what suits you best. For the modest swimmer, one-pieces are in and are flattering for just about everyone.

Switch Flops are the must-have item for this summer. e new brand of flip-flops takes customization to a new level, allowing users to change the style of the shoe. e straps are made of Velcro, allowing users to peel off designs and attach new ones, with different styles and patterns. SwitchFlops are available from Love Shoes, Dale St, Milnrow.

Mineral makeup is perfect for the humid weather as it doesn't clog pores and makes sure your makeup stays put. Mineral makeup is the new revolution in cosmetics and is apparently much kinder to your complexion than traditional beauty products. Forget lipstick this summer, it’s all about the gloss! Make sure your lips are shining, even if the sun isn’t! Try Proto-col lip glosses - the first of their kind, with a built in LED light under the lid, as well as a side panel mirror.

Sunglasses are a must. Not only do they protect your eyes, but they also spice up your summer look. A quality pair of sunglasses is definitely a worthy investment. Craven & Murray Opticians, in Norden, have plenty to choose from, including designer frames such as RayBans and D&G. 20

www.rochdalestyle.com

It seems skimpy swimwear is be back this summer…for men! Retail experts have reported a 400% year on year increase in sales of Speedo-style tight trunks. is might be since Daniel Craig wore a La Perla pair as James Bond in 2007! Bright, catchy colours and big graphic patterns are also the trend for men’s swimwear.

Please remember to apply sunscreen before your day in the sun, at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. With direct sunlight reflecting off the waves or the pool, you’ll get toasted if you don’t remember sunscreen. 30 SPF or higher is preferred. Also, look for a waterproof or water-resistant sunscreen, so you can splash about for a while longer! Make a statement with a new hat this season. ere’s so many styles to choose from - fedora, cloche, straw, floppy, cowboy, newsboy, bucket, bowler! A hat is a great accessory and messy hair concealer, as well as being great sun protection for your face. Hats can easily update an existing wardrobe and change your look in an instant. Don’t forget your bucket & spade!

CENTRE OF TALENT UNDER THREAT This summer, the Back Door Music Project celebrates a decade of developing the town’s musical talent. The project, based at The Broadwater Centre, Smith Street, has made a positive impact to the lives of many young people and is still going from strength to strength. However, Rochdale Town Centre redevelopment plans show that The Broadwater Centre, home of the Back Door Music Project, Skylight Circus Arts and Starstruck Theatre School, will be knocked down and replaced by a department store. Rochdale Development Agency say the plans are not yet set in stone, so the Back Door are now fighting to save their home, which they say is ‘the perfect location and venue’. Carol Moore, of the Back Door Music Project, explained: "The Broadwater Centre is perfect for us on so many levels. It’s a town centre location, yet on the opposite side of town to all of the pubs and clubs and away from any built up residential areas. It's a stone's throw away from Rochdale bus station, so it's easy for the young people to get here safely and then get back home safely.” Carol added: "In order to fit up to 250 people in a room you need a very large space and The Broadwater Centre has this space. 24

www.rochdalestyle.com

Being the very first Rochdale public swimming baths we have a full size swimming pool underneath our wooden floor, just to give you an idea of the size of our main room! We also have a number of rooms to cater for our music workshops, office, practice room, drum and guitar lessons, etc.” The Victorian building was built in 1868, as Rochdale's first public baths, in the Italian style of architecture, thanks to Alderman Moore and Alderman Taylor. The baths cost £9,500 to build and in 1868 were visited by 33,849 bathers. The two large pools, one for the ladies and one for the gents, were 65 feet 6 inches by 39 feet, and 38 feet high. The balconies in each room are some of the earliest examples of "cast in situ" concrete. The building is steeped in history and from 1941 – 1945 it was even used as Headquarters for Rochdale's Wartime Ambulance Service, to help the war effort.

Instead of being relocated, the Back Door Music Project proposes that money be spent on renovating the current building, to use The Broadwater Centre as a ‘Historic gateway into Rochdale’." To help to save The Broadwater Centre log on to: www.backdoormusicproject.co.uk/Petition/.n Ruth Meredith

ROCKIN' ROOTS

Young people from across Rochdale, created work based upon and inspired by the musical history of the borough. The work was exhibited in Gallery one, at Touchstones, throughout the spring. The exhibition, which was opened by The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift, was coordinated by Immediate Arts, in association with The Back Door Music Project. Immediate Arts is a drop-in arts facility, for budding artists or anyone who wants to develop their artistic skills, in a relaxed and friendly environment. Workshops take place on Tuesday evenings at The Broadwater Centre, Smith Street. For more details contact Brian Turner at immediatearts@googlemail.com n www.rochdalestyle.com

The Tan is Back!

The tan is back! Be gone pale skin, wave farewell to a subtle sun kissed glow… this summer say hello to the deep tan. Deep, dark tans are now back in fashion and are all the trend for this summer, but be careful, there is no need to expose yourself to the harsh rays of the hot midday sun to achieve this. There are so many varied options in tanning that there is a tan and application method to suit you! Whether you prefer a spray, a mousse, a cream, a gradual tan, a mist or a lotion there is a self-tan for you. And remember… SELF tan means SAFE tan!

4

. There is nothing worse than waking up the morning after your tan application to find the palm of your hands a horrid brown mess! To avoid this try using rubber gloves or an applicator mitt when applying, then simply sweep the backs of the hands with self tan diluted with moisturiser.

My 10 Golden rules to achieving the perfect tan.

1

.A clean skin is the key to success when you are tanning. If you are a self-confessed selftan addict make sure you exfoliate regularly to avoid a build up of previous tan applications.

2

. Make sure that waxing treatments are carried out at least 24 hours before hand, and for you scaredy cats who can’t face waxing make sure you shave 24 hours before you apply your self tan.

3

. When you’re tanning, give yourself a good all-over polish and apply plenty of moisturiser the night before, to make your skin as smooth and even as possible. Dry skin is the main culprit of a patchy, uneven tan so moisturise everywhere, including wrists and hands, elbows, knees, ankles and feet.

5

. When you’re applying your tan, make sure you have applied all over. Don’t worry if you go over the same area twice – the tan will only be patchy if you miss a bit, not if you double up.

6

. Make sure you don’t rub in your gradual or self tan. Gentle smoothing is all you need, then you can let the product do its work. Rubbing could result in a patchy uneven finish.

7

. Try to avoid washing your hands for as long as possible in the development time – min. 2 hours. St Tropez stock a tan remover, however you could try a hand sanitiser or wipes instead as these work just as well.

8

. your tan won’t get deeper the longer you leave it. Once it’s been on for the required amount of time (usually 4 to 6 hours), it will have given you the natural-looking golden colour you crave. For a deeper tan you should re-apply on successive days 2–3 days in a row.

9

. When you’ve applied your tan wear dark, loose fitting clothing and avoid tight-fitting underwear. Anything that’s pressing on the skin could make the results a bit patchy.

10

. The hands and face will fade quicker than the rest of the body, so why not apply St Tropez’s Rapide Face to the face and the backs of the hands to keep your tan looking fresher for longer. For a colour boost for the rest of the body, try using St Tropez Self Tan Intensifier every 2-3 days - but don’t forget to polish and moisturise too, or your colour won’t fade evenly. There you have it! The all time golden rules to tanning and making sure it lasts! If all else fails why not book your self in at The Retreat, for a professional tan. We provide St Tropez full body tanning treatments, perfect for those special occasions. Or for a quick fix we offer spray tanning, perfect for ladies/men on the go. For more information on safe tanning/self tanning or to find out more about the treatments and tanning products we stock at The Retreat Nails and Things, please do not hesitate to phone us on 01706 868 898 where one of our fully qualified professional, friendly therapists will be more than happy to assist you. The Dale

For many Rochdalians, the thought of Rochdale Football Club gaining promotion from the basement division has been on our minds since the first ball was kicked back in August. Ever since that remarkable, heartbreaking play-off final at Wembley, two seasons ago, when Rochdale lost to Stockport County, fans have been asking if promotion was ever going to be possible.

Manager Keith Hill has now written himself into the history books, as the manager who finally achieved what many cynics said was the impossible.

Players applaud the crowd Keith Hill 32

On Saturday 17 April, Rochdale secured promotion with a 1 - 0 victory over Northampton. The last time our football team won promotion was 41 years ago and longstanding Rochdale supporters have been waiting patiently for this day to arrive. The three points secured automatic promotion after a nervous run of games, which had included defeats to teams at the bottom of the table. The sense of relief was apparent, after Rochdale had seen Notts county overtake them at the top of the league, after Rochdale had topped the table with what looked like an unassailable lead of 12 points. Keith Hill is without equal as a Rochdale manager and the delight of the fans on finally achieving promotion was tangible, as the home crowd celebrated in style. Keith, together with his number two, Dave Flitcroft, were mobbed by Dale fans after the final whistle.

Celebration Bus arrives at South Parade.

Keith commented: “from an achievement point of view, this is what we set out to achieve three-and-a-half-years ago. We've done everything now - we've

been to Wembley, been in the play-offs and now we've been promoted. The players have been brave all season because at the start of the campaign nobody was giving us a chance. Our remit was to finish in the top 10. The fans didn't turn up in the early part of the season, but they turned up in numbers at the end. It was an exceptional day with the players showing a lot of bravery and the supporters a lot of patience. We want to take that type of support into next season.

Civic reception awaits the teams arrival.

The club celebrated their promotion to league One with an open-top bus parade through the town. Fans watched as the bus travelled through from the club's ground Spotland, to Rochdale Town Hall, where the team had a civic reception. Keith Hill said it was an "incredible day" for the club. "Our triumph has been absolutely magnificent," he added. The Mayor of Rochdale, councillor Keith Swift, said: "It's been an exceptional year for Rochdale football club. The manager, players and everyone connected with the club have worked so hard this season so we're delighted to help them celebrate their thoroughly deserved success." n Colin Meredith

APRIl IS THE cRUEllEST MONTH At the start of the 2009-2010 season you could have got very long odds on Dale coming anywhere near clinching an automatic promotion spot. In his first two seasons in charge, manager Keith Hill and his assistant, Dave Flitcroft, had taken the team to Wembley in the League 2 play-offs final against Stockport, and again into the play-offs without progressing past the knock-out stage. no chance they could improve on that, said the doom-and-gloom merchants. And to be honest, I wasn’t expecting a great deal.

our early form seemed to bear that out, with just two wins in the first eight games. Then in September we went on a winning streak – four in a row, including two away! But us Dale fans are hardened sceptics. A bit like grizzled World War 1 veterans in the trenches who through grim experience have learned not to get our hopes up too high. Because you’ll only get knocked down again for being so cocky.

runs his heart out, gives all he’s got for the full ninety minutes. In Chris o’Grady he found the ideal partner, an intelligent reader of the game with a wicked body swerve who torments defences. There seemed to be an immediate telepathy between the two – clever flicks from o’Grady finding Daggers in the perfect position, the pair of them slicing through the opposition.

But then, starting in late november and continuing through the new Year, all hell broke loose. Eleven games without defeat! And not only were Dale winning, they were winning in style, playing entertaining, free-flowing football that was a joy to watch. Scoring lots of goals too – three-nils, four-nils, three-ones, four-ones.

out of favour at his home side of oldham, stuck in the reserves, Chris o’Grady admits his career was going nowhere until Keith Hill showed faith in him. The striker must have thought he’d died and gone to heaven when he came to us on loan and started popping them in, finishing as Dale’s top scorer on 22 goals.

The key to our success was the partnership of Dagnall and o’Grady. Daggers has always been a player who

League 2 champions. But the football gods never make things easy for Dale. While in March we won four and drew one, in April we couldn’t find the net for love nor money. Rubbing salt into the wound, we crashed 5-0 away to lowly Torquay, and then even worse, bottom club Darlington beat us at home on a miserably memorable Tuesday night … Tension and trepidation among the fans were palpable. We just needed three points to make promotion certain, and finally, of course, it came against northampton on a gloriously sunny afternoon at Spotland, that man o’Grady again sealing promotion with a single goal. only one thing to say: Up the Dale! © Trevor Hoyle n

RANKED NUMBER ONE

Since he was just ten years old, local off road racer Craig Venske has showed more than just a keen interest in motorbikes. is only possible through gaining continued sponsorship.

He has since progressed to be currently ranked number one in the British Open Elite Championship and number two in the British 450 Elite Championship. However, his journey in reaching this level has been varied and sometimes hazardous. Style recently met up with Craig, who was nursing a broken leg, at the home of one of his sponsors ‘Essential Marble & Granite’ in Heywood. He described how

Craig says he has always had his parents Sharon and Paddy firmly behind him and recalled how it all started back in his hometown of Benoni Guateng, South Africa. His first bike was an old 80cc Honda and after a little practice he declared he was ready to race. Much to everyone’s surprise he got the ‘hole shot’ in his first ever race, but a fall later gave him a tenth place. Craig’s career took off in his second year, with two brand new Honda 85 bikes. He enjoyed regular wins and podiums and a second place in the South African championship. Aged just 13, Craig took on the big league on a 125cc Honda, against riders of up to 17 years of age. He won numerous regional titles and championships riding for the Kawasaki works team.

Aged 16, Craig moved to the big guns 250cc two strokes and after his first season as a privateer, he was given a ride with the Suzuki works team for 3 years; the highlight of which was representing his country in the SA

MX Grand Prix at Sun City. For this achievement Craig received his Protea Colours, the highest accolade a sportsman in South Africa can achieve. Craig also represented SA in the African Motorcycle Union championships for three years and won two of these prestigious events.

With the advent of Supermoto in South Africa, Craig was invited to ride at an event, and having never ridden in any form of road racing, achieved a creditable sixth overall. He really enjoyed this new challenge, so with a new 450KTM Supermoto machine the game was on. He managed numerous podiums and from this performance he was chosen, once again, to represent SA at the Supermoto of Nations in Ireland and at Protea Colours. This was followed by a year in Italy, with a class win at the Supermoto of Nations. Craig made the move to the UK in February 2007 and he drove for Robinsons in Rochdale during the 2007 season, where his current www.rochdalestyle.com

Craig says the highlight of his entire career so far was his magnificent third place at the British Supermoto GP 2009 at Mallory Park. Speaking to Style about the future, Craig said he plans to continue in the sport, but is constantly looking for new avenues of sponsorship if he is to reach his ultimate goal of becoming World Champion.

mechanic Gavin Edwards still works. He currently rides for Triple D Racing the Kendal based KTM dealership. Craig is also sponsored by Triple D Racing, Acerbis, Scott, Arai, Halo Leathers, Gearne, TW Profiles, Unified Pressings and Engineering, GSS and Essential Marble and Granite.

Have a go with herbs T

here is nothing like freshly picked herbs from your garden to add interest to your food. Summer salads can be brought alive with coriander, chives, or basil. Mint is superb with lamb, new potatoes or peas. Garlic has a multitude of uses, and so the list goes on. The great thing about herbs is that they are so easy to grow and many can be grown either in pots on your kitchen windowsill or outside in a window box. Similarly, a hanging basket makes a great herb planter.

The main thing that herbs love is lots of light and bright sunshine is ideal. Secondly, choose a well-drained soil based compost such as John Innes no.2 and avoid over watering. Finally, pick or cut herbs regularly to encourage new fresh shoots to develop. Fast growing herbs such as parsley and coriander will need trimming far more often than slower growing thymes or rosemary.

GSG Carpet Factory Shop celebrated its first birthday in April of this year. The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift and Ms Sue Etchells joined the celebration, toasting the continued success of the company. The partners in the company, Sue Benson, Garry Marshall and Gilles Coulombeau were on hand to welcome their visitors and are looking forward to ongoing success. Sue Benson had worked on the site for nine years, when Ryalux decided to close the factory shop down. Rather than be out of work, Sue decided to continue the business and so GSG was born, named after their first names of Garry, Sue and Gilles. GSG carpets now stock the complete Ryalux range, offering luxury carpets for every room at affordable prices.

A Royal Jeweller Scores a Royal Win-dsor

A rare 1930’s tartan kilt, once owned by The Duke of Windsor, has been bought at auction by local jeweller, John Swindon.

The kilt was passed on to a gentleman called David campbell, who worked as a valet to the Duke of Windsor in the 1930s. The kilt bears the label “McDougall’s of Inverness”, which was a provider of exclusive clothing in the early 20th century. The unusual piece of royal memorabilia was unearthed by the auctioneer Charles Hanson, star of the BBC's Bargain Hunt, who described it “as a significant royal find”. He said: “As the tartan was unwrapped, I recognised the two-way colour scheme as an exclusive royal tartan.”

Mr Swindon bought the kilt from the auction at Hansons Antiques, at The Mackworth Hotel, near Derby. He explained: “I saw the kilt was up for auction in an newspaper article, after which I rang the auction house, only to be told the auction was already underway. Fortunately, the kilt had not yet gone under the hammer and I was asked if I would like to make a

telephone bid. I have been to many auctions in the past and have bought many things of historical interest but I had never made a bid over the telephone so I was both excited and nervous at the same time.” John added: “I was delighted when I secured the kilt for just under the price I was willing to go to. It was only afterwards, that I realised the kilt was worn by the Duke of Windsor as a boy. This makes the kilt well over a hundred years old.” The kilt is now on view in John’s jewellers shop - J&D Alexander, 2 The Walk, Rochdale, OL16 1EP. www.rochdalestyle.com

It’s that time of year again, when we start to gear up for the great summer getaway. No doubt with the recession and the Met office predicting record temperatures, more of us will be holidaying at home. So with no weight restrictions or baggage trolleys to have to contend with, these are my pick of cars for a family holiday.

Y A W A T E G R E M M U S T A E T HE GR Ford S-Max For years if you wanted to move more than five people you either had the choice of a transit-esque minibus or a Renault Espace. Now though, the market is swamped with cars that can not only accommodate seven people, but include flexible seat options to trade off seating capacity with load space.

I have only ever driven an i800 on a private test track and although the 2.5litre turbo diesel engine felt gutsy at low speeds, I really had to work hard to get near a speed, which would get you a fine on the motorway network. Then again, that might appeal to a family man who is more concerned by speed than safety.

Renault Clio Tourer The pick of this genre is the Ford S-max. Now in its second-generation guise, I have chosen is as it offers the best balance of driving enjoyment and practicality. On the road, it handles just like a Mondeo and thanks to a choice of gutsy engines feels lively when pushed. It is also one of the few cars in the market that affords some boot space, even with seven seats set up.

52

Assuming your loins are yet to go into overdrive and you like the idea of a decent load space, but still like the economy of a small car, then you can’t help but be tempted by something a little smaller.

Hyundai i800

A lot of you might be tempted with a MINI clubman and if you go for style over substance, then by all means be my guest. Although, if you are more savvy, then I think you’ll quite like the Clio Tourer.

Ok, I know that this is just a van with windows and seats in the back but there is no more practical way to move an extended family all in one go. For the £19,010 asking price you get a pretty decent spec which includes air conditioning, heated drivers seat, ESP, electric windows, reversing sensors and 16” alloys as well as eight seats and space for luggage.

Offering a decent load space in the rear and offering dimensions, which won’t require two parking spaces at the supermarket, the Clio Tourer has become quite a hit. The rival Peugeot 207 estate also deserves an honourable mention too, as it offers both a rewarding driving experience and a range of frugal but fun engines.

www.rochdalestyle.com

Volkswagen California Assuming the recession hasn’t bitten too deep and you are looking for a fun way to spend your holidays in the UK, then may I introduce the Volkswagen California. At £39,965, it may not be particularly cheap, but the spec list includes everything you would expect in a family car, plus a popup roof, a kitchen with fridge, cooker and sink, two double beds, a wardrobe and its own, programmable heating system! Wherever you venture this summer, have a great break and enjoy the journey as much as the holiday. If you do venture to the lands where they drive on the wrong side of the road, make sure you are familiar with all the local customs before the Gendarmes, Garda or even the Policía catch up with you!

PAINTING THE TOWN RED…BLUE…AND Local artist, Emma Matthews is fulfilling her dream of turning her lifelong hobby into a career. As a student, Emma was inspired to pursue her ambitions, after working alongside Rochdale’s best known artist, Walter Kershaw. In 2005, Emma began taking part in a regular art show at Middlebrook Retail Park, near the Reebok Stadium. This kickstarted a chain of events and opportunities and with the support of her family and local business owners, Emma was able to turn her much-loved hobby into an income, mostly bulit on recommendations. As well as providing original, bespoke art for the home, Emma has worked with interior designers and supplied paintings to restaurants, offices, private hospitals. Emma’s work is currently available to view and purchase from Ryalux Carpets (Queensway), Strike Ten Bowl (Sandbrook Park) and Number Ten (Baillie St). Emma is also at the Middlebrook Retail Park, at the end of each month between Feb-Oct, offering original, abstract contemporary and pop art paintings.
