O

nce again, the popular 20-episode BBC One series has been filmed in and around Rochdale, with the former Hilltop School being transformed into Waterloo Road. However, it’s all change this year, as the Comprehensive has merged with local private school John Fosters, much to the annoyance of the teachers and pupils. Young Rochdale actress, Shannon Flynn, stars as new character Emily James, whose storyline got off to a dramatic start, when her father was murdered in the very first episode. The 13-year-old has joined a starstudded cast, with Jenna Louise Coleman 4

www.rochdalestyle.com

(Jasmine, Emmerdale) playing her older sister, Lindsay. I caught up with Shannon to discuss her newfound fame and what it’s like to enrol at the most popular school on television.

When did you first start acting? I did some shows at Primary school and then I started at starstruck Theatre school when I was six. My professional debut was in 2005, when I played a Babe in Babes in the Wood at the gracie Fields Theatre. Then, in 2007, I was back at gracie Fields when I played annie for rochdale amateur Operatic society.

Were you already a fan of Waterloo Road before you got the part of Emily? yes I watched it from series One, episode One. so when I first found out about my audition for it I was literally dancing around the kitchen! after the audition my mum was on the phone to my agent and she said they wanted to offer me the part - I was screaming in the car. We had to pull over! What is it like playing Emily? How would you describe her? emily wears her heart on her sleeve and hates it when anything is said about her family. she’s the opposite of her sister, Lindsay, because Lindsay lashes out,

before. I don’t have a clue what’s coming up in the next series, but I’m hoping for some happier storylines! What is the best thing about being in Waterloo Road? Just meeting everybody and filming at the school, even though it was all a bit surreal at first. Do people recognise you from the series? Not that much. But my friend, andy, always goes up to people in town and points out that i’m in Waterloo road! It’s a bit embarrassing! and people at school keep asking me if i’m in Waterloo road.

but emily just cries all the time. I am actually quite like emily, in the fact that i’m not really a big fighter! How have your family and friends reacted to you joining Waterloo Road? They’re really supportive. I’ve had loads of texts and facebook messages, which is a bit surreal really. What are the Waterloo Road cast like? everyone is great! I get along well with reece who plays Denzil, because we’ve got quite a lot of scenes together and he’s a really nice guy. and i’m good friends with ayesha (amy) and Holly (sambuca). They’re all really easy to get along with. eva Pope is so nice as well and really funny. Before Waterloo road, I was in Macbeth at The royal exchange Theatre in Manchester. Jason Done, who plays Tom Clarkson in Waterloo road was in it too, so we made friends there and it’s nice that we’ve been able to work together again. and Jenna who plays my sister is really nice and a really good actress. Any funny stories? yes I was filming a scene in the staffroom with angela griffin, who plays Kim Campbell. she’s eating a cheese sandwich and she takes me over to get a biscuit, whilst there’s a fight going on between Jo Lipsett and steph Haydock. everyone just burst out laughing because angela had cheese hanging out of her mouth! and they filmed two full minutes of her laughing non-stop.

What has been the toughest scene to film? We did a fight scene in episode four where emily and Lindsay get jumped on the way home from school and I fell over twice in that when I wasn’t supposed to. I had to stick up for Lindsay and Michaela pushes me out of the way, but I tripped over my own feet and then went flying! Then later on I fell backwards into a ditch, with my legs up in the air and they got it all on tape! What have been your favourite scenes so far? My favourite scene to film was in the second episode, with Denzil in the dinner hall. They didn’t show it all in the end, but I was slurping spaghetti and I ended up getting it stuck between my teeth! That was a fun scene to film. The scene where I found out my dad was dead obviously wasn’t fun, but it was a good chance for me to show that I could do a sad scene. and there’s a scene coming up in episode ten which I think my friends are going to give me a bit of grief about! What is coming up for your character? emily’s story unravels and things are explained. I was only supposed to be in ten episodes, but then they asked me to be in all twenty and i’m starting filming on the next series soon. I think they’ve kept me in because they like my character and the way things are working with Denzil, because he didn’t really have any friends in his year

Is it hard juggling filming with schoolwork? I have a tutor on set and my school (Oulder Hill Community school) is really supportive. They give me work to take with me when i’m filming. I have lots of breaks because filming takes a long time. The assembly scene in the very first scene of the first episode was about a minute long but it took a whole day to film, because there were so many different people to shoot.

What is your dream job? I want to carry on acting but i’d love to do more theatre and maybe a comedy sketch or something a bit more lighthearted. Do you have any advice for budding young actresses? It sounds really cheesy but if you really want to do it as a career, just push yourself and go for it.

Celebrating loCal talent In 2010, The Back Door Music Project celebrates a decade of nurturing the town’s new creative talent. The project, based at The Broadwater Centre, Smith Street, has helped hundreds of young people, from across the borough, to develop their skills in a fun and safe environment. Since appearing on Channel Four’s The Secret Millionaire last year, The Back Door has finally started to gain the recognition and support it deserves. Lisa Stansfield recently commented, “The Back Door Music Project does amazing stuff for kids; developing their talent and giving them the confidence to utilise their skills.”

he project has already made a positive difference to the lives of many young people in the town and things are going from strength to strength. The Back Door Music Project is celebrating a recent grant award from the Big Lottery Fund. The grant of just over £140,000 has taken the total funding, for the next three years, to almost £180,000.

T

The much-needed funding boost will allow The Back Door to increase the number of Friday nights it opens each year, secure existing staff positions, create new posts and provide new, exciting activities for young people across Rochdale. New plans for the next three years include developing a drop in café for young people after school, skateboard facilities, an art project and gallery and a youth volunteering program. The Back Door will also provide rehearsal and recording facilities and creative workshops. The Back Door Music Project receives funding from the Youth Opportunity Fund and Link4Life, with band nights also generating income to fund more creative workshops. After featuring on The Secret Millionaire, the project secured further funding through the V:Match fund programme to employ a volunteer coordinator and begin a volunteering programme for young people. Volunteering will provide even greater opportunities for

young people to increase their education and employment prospects. “We are excited and scared in equal measures at the minute!”, says project coordinator Carol Moore. “This news has secured our medium term future and allows us to get bigger and better and provide more of what the young people are asking us for every week. We will be able to open every Friday night soon and provide a wider range of activities for a larger number of young people. The project is also setting up a youth management committee so that users have more of a say in what goes on here and we are hoping to do more work with the professional music sector.”

Carol Moore added, “Being chosen as one of the Mayor’s charities this year has really helped raise our profile within the borough and beyond. We’ve got all sorts of new opportunities opening up this year; jam nights, recording and rehearsal spaces, tutoring sessions, recording and performance workshops – it’s really coming alive!”n Ruth Meredith

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift, who chose The Back Door Music Project as his mayoral charity, commented, “I owe Back Door a lot in my own recording career and I’m really pleased to be able to give something back and support them this year.”

CD LAUNCH… COMING SOON! Stave Music and The Back Door Music Project have joined forces, to create an exciting 19-track compilation album of local talent and new music. The aim of the album is to raise local awareness about the thriving music scene we have right under our noses and raise the local profile for all those showcased on the album. The album will be launched early next year. Look out for the spring issue of Style when we will have more details, plus 500 copies to giveaway!

An English Heritage blue plaque was recently unveiled at the old Cargo Studio in Kenion Street, which played host to the likes of Joy Division, The Fall, New Order, The Stone Roses and The Inspiral Carpets.

BLUE PLAQUE EVENTS

A

host of music fans, along with a number of famous faces gathered to celebrate Rochdale's contribution to British musical heritage. Emmerdale actor, Dominic Brunt (Paddy Kirk) came along to show his support. Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook, Andy McCluskey from OMD, John Robb from Goldblade and Cargo Studios founder John Brierley also joined in the celebrations. Musical icons, together with the Mayor of Rochdale, also attended a special unveiling of another blue plaque on Market Street, Heywood. The plaque marks the former Tractor Studios, which were funded by the late legendary DJ, John Peel. John Peel once worked at Townhead Mill in Rochdale and music fans gathered in the centre to learn about its musical past and listen to a video message from his widow on the large TV screen. Chris Hewitt, manager of seventies cult band Tractor, organised both the blue plaque events, as a tribute to the rich musical heritage of the area. Following the unveilings of plaques in Heywood and Rochdale, The Back Door Music Project hosted a reception, which saw Peter Hook, Section 25 and Martin Coogan perform. They teamed up with a new generation of Rochdale music, The Pins and 2Tone, to celebrate music in the borough, both past and present. n

20 Years at number one! Gracieland is the latest incarnation of a recording studio first established in 1989. It was built by Lisa Stansfield and her collaborators Ian Devaney & Andy Morris and was used in the making of Lisa's debut album, “Affection”.

n time for Lisa's second album "Real Love" the equipment had been upgraded with the inclusion of an Amek Mozart console loaded with Rupert Neve modules. The album was recorded and mixed entirely at Gracieland.

I

It was the sound of the Amek board that generated interest in the Amek 9098, that has since become the centrepiece of the studio. Now in its twentieth year, Gracieland is established as a successful commercial recording studio.

Speaking about the town’s hidden talent, Lisa Stansfield commented: “I think Rochdale is a creative town… over the years it has been quietly producing some well respected and successful artists; writers, actors, musicians. Some achieve more than others, but you only have to go to the Cemetery Hotel or The Baum Pub to see and hear the assortment of people who make Rochdale the interesting place that it is. You always find that there’s more creativity going on in the background of towns, rather than cities and this talent needs an outlet. Rochdale certainly has a lot of untapped creativity.”

Lisa added, “It has been said recently that Rochdale has lost its musical charm but with local bands like The Sticks, Finelines, Tyro and others, the music scene is alive and kicking. It’s exciting that these local bands are using Gracieland studio. It’s equipped to a very high standard, it’s got all the latest technology and loads of vintage stuff. The studio has been going for 20 years so it offers new bands 20 years of experience and a great collection of the best equipment.” Gracieland are generously providing the first prize for the winner of The Back Door Music Project’s Battle of the Bands competition, which will be decided in December, with one of the judges being Gracieland’s resident engineer and producer Stephen BoyceBuckley.

Having now been in the industry for 30 years he considers Gracieland to be one of the finest studios around, Stephen said “it’s the most creative environment i’ve ever worked in”. The winning band will receive a day’s recording at Gracieland studio. Lisa said, “I’m really excited about Gracieland being the first prize for the Back Doors Battle of the Bands competition and I can’t wait to hear the winning band. It’ll be wonderful for them to use a professional studio with a really good engineer and producer and he’ll make the tracks sound brilliant.”n Ruth Meredith

On a very pleasant Saturday, in early September, the centre of Heywood took a step back over 60 years with its War Time Weekend. To help recreate the sights and sounds of those dark days, shopkeepers in the town swopped their usual attire and became factory workers, land army girls, soldiers, barbers, and waitresses or simply shoppers. The weekend was supported by many of the shops in Heywood, together with the stallholders on Heywood market. The organisers dressed Heywood with wartime signs, notices, sandbags and taped up windows. Beddoes, on Market street, changed their window display to take you back in time, displaying a collection of wartime memorabilia. There was even a small army of soldiers diffusing an unexploded bomb, near St Lukes Church. You could have a short back and sides at Andrew Kelso hairdressing on Market Street and refresh yourself with a well deserved cuppa at Tillys Tea Room in Mike Goldricks Blinds, which is now a permanent feature downstairs in his store on Dawson Street. The day proved to be a great success and one which I am sure will be repeated again by all concerned.

BORN & BRED Local actress Sue Devaney

Rochdale-born actress Sue Devaney, best known for her roles in Coronation Street, Dinnerladies and Casualty, has already enjoyed a varied and exciting career but things keep getting better! Having just finished a World Premiere national stage tour of Victoria Wood’s Dinnerladies, Sue is now joining a star-studded cast in Aladdin, at the Manchester Opera House this Christmas.

A

n ex-pupil of Oldham Theatre Workshop, Sue made her television debut as an usherette in Mating Call, followed by a small appearance on the children's show Rainbow. She then played Mildred Bailey, an orphan girl, in the comedy series In Loving Memory, alongside Christopher Beeney, Sherrie Hewson and Thoria Hird. The actress made her Coronation Street debut in 1984, when she became Kevin Webster’s younger sister, Debbie, a role she played for two years. Our Day Out IF YOu FANCY AN INTERESTING DAY TRIP, COVERING A RETuRN JOuRNEY OF JuST OVER A HuNDRED MILES, THEN A VISIT BACK IN TIME TO CARNFORTH STATION AND VISITOR CENTRE IS WELL WORTH THE ADVENTuRE.

T

he award-winning Visitor Centre opened in October 2003 after an extensive restoration programme and is located within a busy working railway station. Carnforth Railway Station was opened in 1846 by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway Company and was originally just a single platform. In 1856, a small station was built, following the connection of the Furness and Midland Railway lines. A it all started “just through year later, a new station was me getting a little piece of constructed, which remained grit in my eye” at milford open until 1st August 1880, junction station, otherWise when a new station was constructed at a cost of knoWn as carnforth station. £40,000. David Lean’s classic 1945 film, Brief Encounter, was partially shot at Carnforth Station and has captured the imagination of audiences for more than sixty years. Brief Encounter is one of the most popular romantic British films of all time and ranks second in the British Film Institute’s Top 100 ‘Best British Films’ list. Most of the platform scenes were filmed at Carnforth. The external filming of the "Milford Junction" refreshment room used film "flats" specially erected on Carnforth station. The interior films scenes of the Milford Junction refreshment took place on a set at Denham studios. The set, however, bore a very close resemblance to the genuine refreshment room at Carnforth station. The station has been voted the 8th most romantic film location in the country. You can run up the subway and stand under the famous Brief Encounter clock. The Visitor Centre is housed in the beautifully-restored historic buildings and offers the visitor a wealth of attractions, facilities and a fascinating range of exhibitions. You can take a welcome break in the Brief Encounter Refreshment Room, which has been faithfully restored to resemble the set used in the film where Laura and Alec first met. Enjoy a snack or a light bite as you soak up the atmosphere in the unique surroundings. The Visitor Centre is open daily 10am - 4pm and closed on Mondays from October to Easter. The Visitor Centre will be closed over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Admission is free during normal opening hours, although donations towards the upkeep are always appreciated.

THEATRE REVIEW

27TH-31ST OCTOBER AT WHITWORTH COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

JAWS (the Junior Associates of Whitworth Society) recently presented the fun-packed musical Back to the 80s, directed by Richard Rudman. The musical tells the tale of the students of William Ocean High School, as they live through their senior year and experience the fun, love, heartbreak and loneliness that comes with growing up. Through flashbacks from the main protagonist, Corey Feldman (Terry Banham), we are taken on a whistle stop tour of the 80s through original songs such as, Kids In America, Man In The Mirror, The Final Countdown, Video Killed The Radio Star, Walking On Sunshine, 500 Miles, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Don’t Worry Be Happy and Footloose. The then 17-year-old Corey (Joe Shelmerdine), is madly in love with class

24

beauty, Tiffany Houston (Rachel Clegg). The problem for Corey is that his love rival and the class president, Michael Feldman (Stephen Jillings), has every girl swooning over him, including Tiffany. Michael and his friends are the sort of cool, good-looking guys that Corey and his two best friends dream of being. Corey’s hopes of dating Tiffany seem lost, but with prom night just around the corner, he finally gets the girl of his dreams. Rachel Clegg put in an exceptional performance as Tiffany, a role that suited her brilliantly. Joe Shelmerdine and Michael Feldman also gave very strong and believable performances. Helen Rose showed off her stunning voice, as the new girl in class, Eileen Reagan, particularly during the breathtaking duet of Lost In Your Eyes, alongside Rachel Clegg. Rachel Slater,

as Cyndi Gibson, was also vocally impressive in her rendition of Material Girl. It was obvious the cast had all worked incredibly hard to produce a brilliant show… and to perfect their American accents. However, Robert Stott stole the show with his hilarious portrayal of class geek, Feargal McFerrin, who believes the crazy notion that one day CD’s will replace cassette tapes. The young chorus showed off their singing and dancing talents, with brilliantly choreographed, high energy performances. Add to that a star wars dream sequence, lots of crazy dance moves and even more blue eyeshadow and it made for a superb, feel-good production. Ruth Meredith

All the world’s a

ochdale Amateur Operatic Society (RAOS) has contributed to the musical and cultural life of the local area for over a century. They currently produce shows and concerts at The Gracie Fields Theatre in Rochdale. The Society is a registered charity and has raised over £50,000 for local causes throughout the years.

R

RAOS is made up of a dedicated team of musical theatre lovers. Their large scale productions have received fantastic reviews, as well as many NODA nominations and awards. Their talented members include highly trained singers, dancers, and actors, many of whom have gone on to work professionally. Productions include spectacular scenery and costume, combined with a large professional orchestra and a professional/highly trained director, musical director and choreographer. Rehearsals are currently in full swing for the society's February production of ‘Copacabana’. 'Her name was Lola'...the unforgettable opening lyric of Barry Manilow's hit Copacabana, is the inspiration for this exciting musical tale, of love and romance, set at the heart of the swinging nightclub scene of the 1940s. While creating the world's next big hit, Stephen, an aspiring songwriter, is carried back to an era when 'music and passion were always the fashion' at the world famous and glamorous Copacabana nightclub in New York City. In his dream, Lola La Mar, a hopeful showgirl, is launched on the path to stardom as a Copa Girl with the help of Tony Forte, a bartender with dreams of his own. Captivated by her performance, the villainous Rico whisks her away to the Tropicana nightclub in Havana. From this exotic, distant new world, a tale of old-fashioned love, jealousy and murder in the entangled lives of Lola, Tony and Rico unfolds. From Maplins to Middleton After a gap of over thirty years it was lovely to catch up with Actress Nikki Kelly who is in the area to star as the Wicked Queen, in Middleton Arena’s Christmas production of Sleeping Beauty.

N

ikki is still recognised for her portrayal as Sylvia Garnsey, in the hit comedy series Hi De Hi. The series may well have finished filming in 1987, but thanks to repeats of the series Nikki has never really been out of the public eye. Nikki trained at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama and got her first TV role in Dixon of Dock Green in 1974 before landing the role of Sylvia. Hi De Hi ran for over 9 years from 1979, with the BBC making a total of 61 episodes. It had been so long since we trained together at Drama School, I was anxious to know how appearing in such a popular series had influenced the rest of her acting career. Nikki explained, “I am so grateful to Hi De Hi for giving me the opportunity to 38

www.rochdalestyle.com

become recognised as an established actress and I am still in touch with many of the cast who became my friends for life…It opened a lot of doors for me and enabled me to go onto other television roles and leading roles in the Theatre. I have toured nationally with many productions since I finished the series and of course appeared in Pantomime every Christmas. I usually play the evil characters but I once played Aladdin and on another occasion a fairy. Although, I much prefer playing the baddie and I am looking forward to getting booed by the children in the Middleton audience!” Nikki also revealed that she is going to be in a National tour of Hi De Hi in 2010. She explained, “It is now over twenty years since I played the role of Sylvia on

television, so I will be playing the ballroom dance teacher, Yvonne Stuart Hargreaves, alongside Barry Howard, who played my husband Barry in the series”. Nikki is greatly looking forward to the tour in March next year, but first has to get back to learning her lines for the production of Sleeping Beauty which runs from 4th until 27th December at The Middleton Arena. This will be Nikki’s first visit to Middleton and, of course, it is the first pantomime in the new Middleton Arena. You can book your tickets on 0161 624 7660. Beating those Winter Blues.

It’s that time of year again… the long dark nights are drawing closer, the cold weather is nipping our extremities and all we want to do is hibernate. For some of us though, this time of year can trigger unwanted feelings of depression, more commonly referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D). The exact cause is unknown, however, we are led to believe S.A.D is possibly caused by chemical changes in the brain, due to the decreased amount of sunlight we are exposed to in these winter months. It is most common among young women, but can also affect women and men of all ages.

T

he symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) can include; depressed mood, loss of interest in usually enjoyed activities, fatigue or loss of energy, poor concentration, sleeping more than usual, weight gain or feeling sluggish. However, there is light at the end of this cold, dark, wintery tunnel. There are therapies in the beauty industry which are centred around personal wellbeing and ones sense of self. They can help us through these bleak months and get us ready to face the festive party season. Hydrotherapy is one such treatment, which will release those feelings of stress, depression and tension. The Retreat Spa (Nails and Things) has a double hydrotherapy bath, large enough for you and a friend, or just as a treat for yourself. The hydrotherapy bath works by releasing millions of large bubbles, which relaxes your muscular tension. It also helps to reduce swollen joints giving you increased mobility - great for when we hit those shops. The hydrotherapy bath also releases very fine bubbles; this has a soothing tranquil effect on your body, which helps relieve your stress and tension. Hydrotherapy can provide you with the vital key to breaking the stress cycle of everyday life, especially with all the commitments

and preparation for the festivities ahead. Unfortunately, stress not only affects the mind but more importantly your immune system and you can be more prone to pick up illnesses. I’m sure a runny nose wasn’t quite the accessory you had imagined to match that little black dress. Facials and body treatments can also be a great way to regain a sense of wellbeing. With The Retreat’s Vitality Surge Energising treatments, for face and body, described as the Body & Soul Reviver, you will give your skin a brightening luminous feel, revive and instantly radiate your senses. Deep reassuring muscle massage, combined with plumping serums and lymphatic drainage revive a lifeless complexion. The lemon, orange and citrus aromas, combined with a vital mask, lift your mood so you leave with the sparkle and energy needed to face the seasonal stresses. Depression alleviating treatments aren’t the only treatments our bodies could be craving this season. The Retreat has a range of wonderful pedicures to revive and uplift those tired feet, to get them in tip top shape for the party season, so you can dance the night away. We all need to look after ourselves - to regain that sense of calm and self worth, put ourselves first before we begin to run around after the children, the in-laws, the dog! We need some ‘me’ time.

For more information on any of the treatments mentioned or to purchase a gift voucher for yourself or a loved one please contact The Retreat, where a friendly member of our fully qualified team will be more than happy to help n Here is The Retreat’s guide to staying sane this season: i Get yourself organised. i Allocate yourself some ‘me’ time by booking in small treats at The Retreat. i Start your Christmas shopping early – avoid the hustle and bustle of the last minute shoppers. i Wear comfy shoes. i Be assertive and ask for help when it is needed- especially to help carry those Christmas shopping bags! i Distance yourself from those who make you stressed. i Accept compliments. i Don’t forget to put The Retreats luxury gift voucher at the top of your Christmas list!

BANISH THE FRIZZ FOR UP TO 3 MONTHS WITH A NEW PROFESSIONAL SMOOTHING SERVICE AT JAMILLA PAUL ROCHDALE A new revolution in haircare has arrived in Rochdale. One that is set to completely change our attitude to frizz! If you have ever wished that your hair was more manageable, softer, straighter and had more shine then Jamilla Paul in Rochdale may just have the solution for you. Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy is a new service that promises a long lasting solution in the battle to beat the frizz! This is not simply a conditioning treatment, nor is it a chemical straightening service. This is an entirely new genre of hair treatment that has swept over from the US over the last six months. Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy range was created by COPPOLA in the USA 18 months ago. Its formulation infuses Keratin deep into the hair cuticle eliminating up to ninety-five percent of frizz and curl from the hair, leaving the hair soft, shiny and luxurious.

For those of you unlucky enough to suffer from over curly, frizzy, or frazzled hair you will know the lengths you need to go to in order to get shiny frizz-free hair on a daily basis. This type of hair is often affected by humidity so that your perfectly blow dried look you achieved in the morning has reverted to a frizzy mess by mid afternoon! After a Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy Service your hair remains shiny, frizz free and easy to handle for up to 12 weeks - dramatically cutting down styling time by over half and making it humidity resistant - whether you want soft frizz free waves or a smooth, straight and sleek finish. The Keratin Complex Home care products ensure the longevity of the initial treatment and a new ‘top-up’ treatment is on its way! The in-salon service takes approximately 2½ hours from beginning to end, and the price starts at £180 depending on the length, thickness and texture of your hair.

It is like “Skincare for your hair” and unlike other salon services, the more you treat your hair, the healthier it becomes. With each treatment the build up of Keratin makes your hair: • Softer & silkier • Straighter and shinier • Faster and easier to blow-dry • Reduces daily styling time • Less maintenance – close to being “maintenance-free” Further, the therapy encases the hair follicle with a keratin bond to promote healing and to help keep toxins in the environment, such as smoke, pollution and UV rays, from entering the hair. Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy is gentle enough to use on all hair types. A great time to have the treatment is directly after a colouring or chemical process. Colour is sealed into the hair leaving it vibrant and extending the life of a colour.

methods, standards and equipment of Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy. The treatment is followed up with a shampoo and conditioning regime that increases the durability and longevity of the initial treatment. Jamilla Paul “This is a new type of service to help clients in the battle to beat the frizz! It is not a chemical straightener that damages your hair, but it is so much more than a conditioning treatment. We are having amazing results with it - You have to see it to believe it” The treatment will be featured on hit makeover show 10 years younger later in the year. For further information on the Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy range please visit www.keratincomplex.co.uk

tHamin The Thamin's pledge is a simple one - to provide discerning diners with vintage Indian cuisine and classic dishes from the subcontinent’s lavish gastronomic history. Curry is an extremely tasty and popular cuisine, but it is a shame when people think that the dishes they are eating, which are sometimes packed with artificial colours and flavours, are the same as those that Indian people might eat in their own home. The aim is to show that Indian food does not have to be an unhealthy indulgence - if prepared in the right way our traditional foods can be as healthy as they are delicious. The restaurant's renowned award-winning head chef, Sheikh Kamran, is a culinary purist who relishes the opportunity to demonstrate how traditional food ingredients can be adapted to suit the most discerning local tastes. You

ARE WHAT YOU EAT!

EDITOR

Colin Meredith

I have now been attending Dietcare, in Milnrow, since mid August and have been encouraged by my weight loss so far. It has been an effort at times, particularly when eating out, but the diet is about eating real food, so there is always something on the menu that you can eat. I am now into a regular routine of nibbling throughout the day to boost my metabolism and have lost a stone, without ever feeling hungry.

We have a great prize to offer to a lucky winner who is looking to lose weight. Dietcare provides personalised slimming programmes based upon healthy eating and are offering a free slimming course to one lucky reader. The winner will receive a six-week slimming course and signed copy of Norah Elizabeth Lane’s book The 13-minute Diet. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is answer the question on page 60. Also, there is a completely free diet and lifestyle check for all readers who contact Dietcare, mentioning Style. If that wasn’t enough, the first 10 people will also receive a free copy of The 13 Minute Diet. Dietcare is run by Gill Meetoo, aged 52, a successful slimmer, who lost four stone. She opened her first Dietcare franchise, in Milnrow, in March and took a second clinic, in Oldham, in June. Dietcare was founded in 1976. It uses a revolutionary technique called the Burns, which involves eating small and often, so you are never hungry. This technique speeds up the metabolism and helps weight loss enormously. The diet programme is based on healthy eating – real food with no supplements – and is said to produce good and consistent weight losses for all slimmers who follow the plan correctly. It was included in the British Council’s British Medicine Guide in 1978, and Dietcare has received many endorsements and referrals from the medical profession.

DO YOU GAIN WEIGHT EASILY? ARE YOU ALWAYS HUNGRY? HAVE YOU GAINED WEIGHT AFTER PREGNANCY? IS YOUR MEDICATION MAKING YOU GAIN WEIGHT? If you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions, your metabolism may be slow, Dietcare can help. Dietcare weight loss clinics offer: n Individual diet and lifestyle check. n Personal weight loss plans. n Confidential one-to-one appointments. n Motivation, counselling and support. n Spot reducing exercise. n Metabolic rate assessment. n Diets for medical conditions, pregnancy, PCOS and fertility. n Fully trained Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) accredited diet advisers. n High success rate.

Lose weight, feel great! There are no gimmicks, pills or powders.

dietcare was runner-up in the prestigious small business champions award 2005, sponsored by the daily mirror newspaper, lloyds bank and the federation of small businesses. one client of dietcare, from rochdale, commented: “i have now found dietcare - at last something that works. i never thought i would ever lose this middle age spread – gill and dietcare made it possible – i feel like a new woman.”

dietcare operates from physio Works, 67 dale street, milnrow, and can be contacted on 01706 541460 or 07947 442094. www.rochdalestyle.com

Open as usual this Christmas! D

espite a blaze at Gordon Rigg, Kingsway, which was battled by several fire crews from Rochdale and Chadderton, the garden centre is open for business as usual. The massive fire, which started at around 8pm on the 10th October, raged for over 12 hours and destroyed a quarter of the building. Sadly, the fire was confined to the pet and aquatic centre and all of the centre’s fish, a rabbit, guinea pigs and reptiles were killed. However, two weeks later, staff found the sole survivor of the blaze, Smokey the Gecko, who had hidden himself away under two inches of sand when the fire broke out. Hailed as a little miracle, Smokey is now the store’s pet and very lucky mascot. A massive clean-up operation has taken place and the centre is open as usual, with the fantastic Christmas displays unaffected.

-WINTER GARDENING TIPSPut frost protection fleece around tender outdoor plants, especially in very cold weather. Prevent containers from freezing solid by wrapping them with bubblewrap or bringing them indoors. Apply a thick mulch of composted bark or coco-shell to the shrub border, to help insulate plant roots from the frost. Prune apples, raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants. Remove fallen leaves from the lawns and borders, which may harbour pests and diseases, to the compost heap. Apply a winter tar wash to fruit trees in December, to kill pests over-wintering in the tree bark. Winter is a good time to move plants around, and compost those that have not made the grade. 52

As the struggle to climb out of recession goes on, i’ve been looking at ways I can get my hard earned pennies to turn a better investment than the banks are offering. A chance conversation with a hack who works for a classic car magazine may have given me the answer, a future classic car.

Fu tu r e C la s s iC s

shed but at the prices these n’s ma er oth an is c ssi cla e ur fut n’s Now, one ma y in the long term. ne mo ch mu too e los to rd ha be ll wi cars are going for, it Here are my pick of the bunch. RENAULT CLIO WILLIAMS Renault produced three separate editions of what most motoring commentators agree was, and still is, the ultimate hot hatch. With a 2.0 litre, 150 bhp engine it may not be as fast as the new generation but with its excellent handling and extraordinary levels of grip, the Clio Williams can’t help but make you smile, turning even a trip to the shops into the highlight of the day. Quite a few of these cars will have been ‘modded’ to wring-out a bit of extra power and had mega-watt stereos fitted, so my tip is to restore any defiled car to its original spec for the best return in the long-term. Do a search on the internet and a car in need of a little work could cost a little as £1,000. AUDI S2 It is amazing what a TV show can do for car values; since Ashes to Ashes hit the screen, prices of the Audi Quattro, the first Rally bred 4x4, have skyrocketed. A brief search reveals that even a restoration project Quattro starts at £5k, which to me makes it a classic now, not a future one. There is an alternative however, the S2. The S2 was a performance hatchback developed with Porsche and combined the 54

www.rochdalestyle.com

Audi 80 and Quattro. The performance figures are pretty impressive, even by modern standards; 220bhp, 0-60 in 5.8 seconds (on par with a modern Porsche Cayman), and a top speed of around 155 mph. All of this is available in a car that is available for around £3k in perfectly serviceable condition. Build quality was sound and that is reflected in the number of cars still around. Driving is great fun and the retro early 90’s looks will turn many more heads than the bland-bycomparisson Audi TT will do! CITROEN XM Straight away you may think - why would this unpopular executive French car make a future classic? The extreme, slender, and well-proportioned Bertone design was not to all tastes, especially to those in the market for executive German metal, or more conservative British steel. That said, many enthusiasts seem to think the XM is on the verge of classic status and with cars available from around £500, it may be well worth a punt. Thanks to the relative simplicity of the mechanics, DIY jobs are quite easy, although watch out for any Automatic gearboxes, which can cause problems if servicing has been neglected.

FORD FIESTA XR2I The third generation Fiesta is just about becoming collectable and the car we all wanted at the time was the XR2i. Lively and entertaining, the little Fiesta is simple to maintain with a plentiful supply of cheap parts knocking about. I should claim a vested interest at this point as I have just bought a 1990 G Reg car for £300, which with a bit of work and some welding, will entertain me for years to come. Cars can be had for as little as £200 but at this range, expect plenty of oxidisation and air being drawn though teeth when it comes to MOT time! As with all the best investment advice, values of your car can go down as well as up, but if you lose money on the stock market, all you get left with is a pretty bit of paper, even if your car becomes worthless on paper, you still have something you can take out and thrash at the weekends!

COMMUNITY... FUNDRAISING SUCCESS The fundraising Freemasons of Rochdale joined together in October with the recipients of their charitable donations. Over the past year, 44 different charities have benefited from donations from the 14 lodges based in Rochdale. One hundred and forty guests attended the event, which was held at The Freemasons Hall, in Rochdale, and the evening celebrated donations of over £51,000. Invited guests included The Mayor and Mayoress Councillor Keith Swift and Ms Susanne Etchells, who were entertained by a string quartet from Rochdale Music Service. A raffle held during the evening raised a further £700 for the mayors chosen charities.

PAMPER & SOOTHE

KEEP IT UP

Just Bras held a Pamper & Soothe evening on 29 October to launch their new autumn and winter collection. Models, Katie and Claudette, entertained the guests by strutting their stuff on the catwalk.

The Sky Television cameras paid a visit to Rochdale AFC recently to feature the clubs up and coming talent in their skill school feature on Soccer AM. Young players Callum Byrne and Dennis Sherriff pitted their ball skills against each other with Callum coming out on top.

BOOSTING THE CHARITY POT The Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Marie Gibbons, held a fundraising Charity Ball at The Riverside in October. Councillor Gibbons and her Consort and husband, Mr Mark Gibbons, welcomed 130 guests to the Riverside, who were treated to a sumptuous four-course dinner, provided by Lords the Caterers of Whitworth. Entertainment was provided by Dino, a local Whitworth man with a powerhouse voice, who kept everyone entertained throughout the night. Guests were also treated to a performance by local dance troupe Ecstasy, who won their slot at the Mayor’s Charity Ball at the Rossendale’s Got Talent competition earlier on in the

year. The girls had developed a Michael Jackson themed routine especially for the occasion. The evening also featured a raffle and auction, with all proceeds from the night, just over £2,500, going into the charity pot. Councillor Gibbons said: “Mark and I had a fabulous evening, and I am indebted to everyone who contributed to make it such a night to remember. I’m delighted with the amount of money we raised from this event, all of which will be donated to Whitworth causes at the end of my year in office in May.”

COmmunity Hall unDer tHreat

The Richard Bentley Smalley Memorial Hall, on Thornham Lane, in Slattocks, was built at the expense of Mr R B Smalley in the 1930’s and given to the residents of the area. It has since provided a much needed community facility, used by uniformed organisations, senior citizens, a karate club, drama group, sunday school and for band practices. Mr Smalley also provided, what in the 1930’s was a substantial fund to maintain the building. Unfortunately, this legacy has been used to maintain the structure over and above the income derived from the various users. Although the building itself is sound, the income the Hall receives is spent on the expensive use of heating and insurance. In recent years, some of the larger windows have been replaced and a new gas heating system has been installed, meaning savings have dwindled. In the near future, the Hall is desperately in need of a new heating system and a fresh coat of paint. The floor also needs sanding and re-varnishing and the dividing doors need replacing. A long-term solution would be to install a false ceiling, which would drastically reduce heating bills. Without the required improvements, the Community Hall may have to close, which would be a terrible loss for all the present and future users. Anyone who would like to volunteer, make a donation or help out in any other way is urged to contact annparkinsonwinstanley@hotmail.co.uk n
