at sixties-themed fundraiser Psychedelic Sixties was the theme of Denise Welch and Tim Healy’s spectacular annual ball, in aid of the GEM Appeal, which was hosted at Lancashire Country Cricket Club’s The Point.

The 750 guests were treated to an exciting evening of entertainment, which even included a song from the hostess herself, along with her Loose Women co-presenters. Celebrities at the star-studded event included Loose Women’s Lisa Maxwell, Sherrie Hewson, Zoe Tyler and Kate Thornton; Coronation Street stars Tina O’Brien, Sally Dynevor, Shobna Gulati, Gaynor Faye, Phil Middlemiss, Alison King, Simon Gregson and Angela Lonsdale along with Rula Lenska, Heartbeat’s Tricia Penrose and Hollyoaks’ actress Jennifer Metcalfe.

Popular Salford-born actor, Jason Done, has many credits to his name, but is probably best known for playing English teacher Tom Clarkson in Rochdale-based BBC series Waterloo Road.

I recently caught up with Jason to discuss his character’s complicated love life, winning a National Television Award and fatherhood both on and off screen!

What did your own school reports used to say?

‘More than capable but plays to the gallery!’ How would you describe your character, Tom?

How did you first get into acting?

I took part in Oklahoma at my school and really enjoyed it. I also enjoyed drama at school, as I had a very eccentric drama teacher! It just seemed a brilliant way to be creative, as well as being able to mess around and burn off energy. It was great for meeting girls too! And for showing off! I hasten to add my passion for acting has since evolved from those very basic reasons! 6

We’ve certainly seen him grow up over the last few series. Tom was always a bit wreckless and a bit irresponsible really. I think he started to mature after Izzie was killed and he had the girls to look after. And I think now he’s become quite a selfless and morally sound person. In reality, I think he would be an excellent and inspiring teacher. He’s had quite a complicated and sometimes tragic love life. Will there finally be a happy ending?

Oh his love life is a disaster! It’s a running joke that he’s always been the kiss of death, quite literally in some cases. Whenever he got together with another girl you knew the end was nigh! Fortunately, I think the series has now focussed more on his abilities as a teacher, than as a partner. And recently he’s concentrated on being a better dad to Josh, so he hasn’t really had time to focus on a relationship. What has been your favourite storyline since Waterloo Road began?

I loved the very first few episodes, where he was in complete turmoil because he was marrying the wrong woman. He was marrying Lorna, but was actually in love with their mutual best friend Izzie. So he ended up marrying Lorna and snogging Izzie on the wedding night!! It was this great first storyline which initially drew me to the project.

What is your favourite storyline coming up?

We’re filming so far in advance, that I honestly lose track of what’s happening in the current series! But it’s safe to say that the series will always have a healthy balance of comedy and pathos. Regarding Tom, it’s not all doom and gloom thankfully. I don’t want to spoil things for the viewers, but there will be a lot of ups and downs in Tom’s life and never any shortage of drama! The series won most popular drama at the National Television Awards in January, beating Doctor Who, Shameless & Sherlock! What was it like to collect the award?

We were all dumbfounded and pretty speechless! It was voted for by the public, so we’re just so appreciative of everybody’s support. We all had a brilliant evening and feel immensely proud. And I even got to meet one of the Chilean miners in the process, which was great. Why do you think series has become so popular?

I think it has found its feet really. When it first started, the content was arguably a little grittier and darker. But I think it is now something that the whole family can sit down together and watch. I think it has storylines that all generations can relate to and appreciate. Are you planning to stay at Waterloo Road?

I think it would be foolish of me to leave the series, whilst I am still

enjoying it and getting great storylines. I feel very proud to be a part of it and I think the programme is going from strength to strength and seems to be increasing in popularity. Do you watch yourself on television?

I hate watching myself on tv, it’s very odd! I do sometimes watch it though because it’s important to see how scenes have turned out, so that you can improve on them. But I cringe watching myself… I’ve put a few pounds on shall we say… too much catering food on set! So i’m concentrating on trying to look a bit sharper for the next series!

What are you up to at the moment?

I start filming Waterloo Road again at the end of May, so i’m doing a few other things at the moment. I’ve been narrating some documentaries and doing a few radio plays. I’m also making a documentary about Belle Vue Aces Speedway team in Manchester, who are the oldest and most famous Speedway club in the world; i’m documenting their attempt to relocate to a purpose-built stadium. So you don’t really give yourself a break in between filming?!

Well I try not to relax too much. Make hay whilst the sun shines! But we’ll have a little holiday too. Congratulations on recently becoming a dad! How are you finding fatherhood?

It’s sensational and without question the best thing that has ever happened to me! It’s life-changing in the most magnificent way.

The Back Door Music Project, based at The Broadwater Centre, Smith Street, has had a positive impact on the lives of many young people and is going from strength to strength. Over the past decade, the Back Door has nurtured the town’s new creative talent and has helped hundreds of young people, from across the borough, to develop their skills in a fun and safe environment. They provide rehearsal space, recording facilities and creative workshops, whilst also opening their doors on alternate Friday nights for their increasingly popular Under 18 live music nights.

Are you a band/solo artist in need of some FREE recordings? The Back Door Music Project are offering free recording workshops to young bands and solo artists of any genre. If you're interested then you must live in the borough of Rochdale and the majority of the band/act must be 13 - 18 years old (if one of your band members is over or under this age or not from Rochdale then you may still qualify). If you love the fresh air and the great outdoors then make a date with the borough’s beautiful countryside and woodland this spring! There has never been a better time to start exploring, with 2011 being the International Year of Forests; a United Nations campaign to celebrate people’s action to sustainably manage the world’s forests. The Rochdale borough has a wealth of spectacular countryside to explore, with beauty spots such as Healey Dell and Alkrington Woods. Healey Dell Nature Reserve sits in a picturesque part of the Spodden Valley, rich in wildlife, with delightful scenery, spectacular waterfalls and a fascinating archaeological history. A disused railway line is now a nature trail, with magnificent views from a 100-foot high viaduct. Once part of the Akrington Hall estate, Alkrington Nature Reserve is an area of mature woodland, providing an ideal habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. Informal paths take the visitor through woodland along the banks of the River Irk and around the fishing lodges at Rhodes. The town also boasts some award winning parks and picnic spots. Heywood’s Queen’s Park received the People’s Choice Award last year, for becoming the nation’s favourite Green Flag park. It’s packed full of things to do, with a lake, activity centre, visitor’s centre, café, tennis courts and plenty of bird life. Hollingworth Lake Country Park is another popular location and a great day out for all the family. Last year, it was voted the North West’s favourite picnic spot as 14

BUSINESS AS USUAL ON DRAKE STREET Drake Street is full of independent retailers offering a wide choice for the discerning shopper. And they need your support now more than ever. Since 4th January 2011, the lower half of Drake Street has been one-way for traffic, whilst work is carried out in preparation for the Metrolink coming to Rochdale town centre. Traffic is able to travel up Drake Street from the town centre, but for traffic coming down Drake Street a diversion operates, with traffic being redirected along Molesworth Street. The diversion and one-way system is in place for approximately four months, whilst utility companies re-route their services away from the route of the tram lines. During this period Drake Street businesses are very much open for business as usual.

Ghostly Tales It was a misty, eerie February night when I decided to venture on a Rochdale Ghost Walk...

I had never been on one before, but had seen groups walking in York and London. We met our guide, a Victorian undertaker, in the warmth of the Baum pub on Toad lane and he then took us to the side of the graveyard at St Mary’s in the Baum, for our first chilling tale of the evening. The Half Moon Horror was just that, a true horror story about the murder of a bride on her wedding night, in Rochdale in the 1850's. We then took an interesting journey through the back streets and passageways of old Rochdale, where we were taken on a journey back in time. Not only were we entertained by stories of murder and suspicious events, but also educated on Rochdale’s fine buildings and the history behind them. The walk took about 75 minutes and the ghost walk brought us back to our starting point at the Baum.

Home–made cleaning products are as effective as store-bought products for household cleaning, better for the environment, and easy on your budget. To clean your home, help save the planet, and spend less you will need: Shaving cream Baking Soda Fresh Lemons White Vinegar Microfibre Cloths One Toothbrush One can of Coca Cola Elbow grease Ever wondered how to stop your bathroom mirror from fogging up after your shower? Try cleaning it with shaving cream. Simply spread shaving cream over the mirror, before wiping away with a soft cloth. Magically, it prevents the mirror from fogging up again. Want to know how to clean soap scum and mildew off shower curtains? Shower curtains are notoriously difficult to clean – a simple solution is to place several large bath towels in a washing machine along with your shower curtain. Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Remove curtain before the spin cycle and hang immediately. Soaking shower curtains in salt water also prevents mildew. Problem with a stained toilet bowl? Pour a can of Coca Cola into the toilet bowl and let it stand for a while; the phosphoric acid in the Coca Cola will work on any stains.

Wondering what to use to clean the entire bathroom? Use straight or diluted white vinegar in a spray. A great cleaner for taps, tiles, the toilet bowl and shower heads. Add a drop of lemon juice to make things smell fresher. Diluted white vinegar with a drop of lemon juice also works great on mould. Spray solution onto the affected area and leave on for a few hours. Then wipe off with a damp cloth. How to clean mirrors and glass in your home… Make up a spray with 50% vinegar and 50% cold water, then add half a teaspoon of liquid dish detergent and shake well. Use a microfibre cloth to polish. This is important as it won’t attract dust. Want to make your home sparkle? Use baking soda with a damp sponge. Baking soda is great for stove tops, removing water rings around baths, cleaning cups, taps, counters and cupboards. You can even use it to wash dishes if you run out of detergent – simply add a handful to a bowl of warm water.

How to eliminate unwanted odours… Among its many talents, baking soda is a natural odour-eliminator. Just sprinkle on a little onto your carpet, leave 10 minutes, then vacuum up to leave your home smelling refreshed. It can even keep your feet smelling sweet. Fill the toe of an old sock with some bicarbonate of soda and tie it. Place the bag in the shoe overnight to absorb any unwanted odours. Did you know that your kitchen sink hosts more germs than your toilet seat? Keep your kitchen sink germ and odour free by using baking soda and lemon on a toothbrush to scrub the grooves and crevices around the drain, taps and faucet. John Bright

alive and kicking

John Bright was born in Rochdale on November 16 1811. From a textile background, he became one of Britain’s foremost politicians, a great statesman renowned nationally and internationally. At one time he was ‘the most popular Briton in America’. There are statues of Bright in Rochdale, Manchester, Birmingham and the House of Commons. Yet, in this the bicentenary of his birth, few remember him. Via a series of events and activities around the country, a group of historians, media and heritage professionals and educationalists will attempt to reverse the process and remind people of Bright’s complex legacy. John Bright was always a controversial figure. As a Quaker-inspired pacifist, an outspoken opponent of slavery, a campaigner for Free Trade and a supporter of the extension of voting rights, Bright had many enemies on the right of the political spectrum. He also had his critics on the left. And the animosity lingered for decades. An attempt on the centenary of his death in 1989 to move Bright’s statue in Rochdale from its site at the foot of Broadfield Park back to its original setting in Town Hall Square met with furious opposition. ‘Why is Rochdale honouring a wealthy factory owner opposed to the reform of child employment laws?!’

Bright became an outspoken MP for Durham, then Manchester and by the mid 1850’s gained a reputation as a skilled politician and a great speaker. Then, amidst a frenzy of popular and media hysteria, Britain and France declared war on Russia and the Crimean War began. Bright was appalled and campaigned vigorously against the war but his pacifist stance eventually lost him his Manchester parliamentary seat .Angry mobs burned dummies of Bright on Oldham Street, Manchester.

Nevertheless it was then that Bright made some of his greatest speeches. His declaration that the ‘Angel of Death has been abroad throughout the land’ had political opponents in tears and earned him a place in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. As details of the ghastly campaign seeped out, public opinion swung in Bright’s favour. For many years Bright, known sarcastically as the MP for the United States, had been an enthusiastic supporter of all things American. The American Civil War divided opinion in Britain. Many supported the slave owning southern Confederate states, particularly in the north of England which depended on the import of cotton from the slave areas. Bright hated the concept of slavery and helped turn British public and parliamentary opinion in favour of the northern Unionists led by Abraham Lincoln. Bright became a hero in America, earning the lifelong gratitude of Lincoln and the close friendship of Charles Sumner the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Bright had become MP for Birmingham in 1858 and, struck by the inequalities he discovered there, immediately launched a campaign to extend the vote to all men over 21. His efforts were rewarded in 1867 with the passing of the second Parliamentary Reform Act. John Bright did eventually achieve government office. He was the first non-conformist to be appointed to the Cabinet, becoming President of the Board of Trade in 1868. He was, however, far more comfortable battling the Establishment as a backbench MP and he resigned in 1871. He continued to campaign on a variety of issues, opposing the Death Penalty and the practise of flogging in the army. So, given his radical agenda and considerable achievements, why was Bright’s death in 1889 greeted with near apathy in Rochdale and why did so many of his contemporaries consider him a reactionary and an ‘enemy of the people?’ This paradox informs the series of events planned for 2011. These already include John Bright Alive and Kicking sessions in Rochdale, Pontefract, Manchester and the Imperial War Museum in London. The events consist of films of Bright’s speeches fabulously re-enacted by TV and theatrical star John Stride (The Main Chance) and a (partisan) discussion led by Bright supporters and detractors. Popular Coronation Street actress, Michelle Keegan, helped 25Ten owner, Kelly TurnerMitchell, celebrate the opening of her new boutique. The designer store was established in the town in 2007, but has recently moved to a new, large flagship store on Yorkshire Street. Michelle cut a ribbon to officially open 25 Ten’s impressive new premises, before having a good look around and leaving with a few glamorous goodies.

Owner Kelly Turner-Mitchell was delighted with Michelle’s visit. She commented: “It was a real honour to have Michelle at our official launch. Babes in the Wood

Budding young performers from Starstruck Theatre School recently took to the stage to show off their acting talents. Over fifty pupils, aged between 4-18 years old, took part in Babes in the Wood at The Riverside, Whitworth.

Kathryn Witney gave an impressive performance as Robin Hood, working alongside Sophie Ansley, as the delightful Maid Marion. Talented siblings, Natalie and Lewis Greenwood, played comedy duo Freda and Fleshcreep and kept the audience entertained with their hilarious sketches. Max Hartle gave an exceptional performance as Nurse Nora, with his flawless comic timing and Rebecca Hardman was perfectly suited to the role of Dizzy Dora, brightening up the stage in her neon pink wig! Edward Lang-Whiston was suitably wicked as the Sheriff and Bethany Foden and Amy Greaves worked well together as Fairy Nuff and Fairy Liquid, guiding the audience through the pantomime…whilst always in rhyme! Jody Turner and Megan Kirby gave strong performances as the young babes, Jack and Jill, as did Lauren Brockett as Little John and Savanna John as Big John. Oliver Haigh and Daniel Rhodes, both seven years old, had the audience in stitches during their rendition of Elvis classic, ‘Teddy Bear’, complete with Teddy Bear costumes. A special mention must also go to Helena Main who showed off her superb vocal ability, with Les Mis favourite ‘Castle on a Cloud’. Other young performers kept everyone entertained in a schoolroom scene packed full of gags, plus a very messy kitchen scene, including cream cakes and doughball cricket! A zombie performance of Thriller also proved a big hit with the audience. It was great to see the young cast thoroughly enjoying themselves, as they pulled together to put on a fantastic show. &The Beast

Mark Andrews Productions recently presented a magical and entertaining production of Beauty & The Beast, at the Middleton Arena. The storyline was held together effectively by Fortune Teller and Narrator, Lorraine Graham, who introduced us to the characters, both good and evil. There was an impressive flying witch, Malice-ia, played with great guile by Lydia Griffiths, her wickedness complemented by Michael Garland as Lord Chamberlain. Christopher Berry played a charismatic Prince Phillippe, well matched with Rebecca Wicking as Belle; an intelligent heroine whose goodness shines through. Providing lots of laughter throughout the production, Madame Lotty was the traditional overdressed pantomime dame, played with great energy by David Rumelle, who was never short of quickfire responses to the audience. Jonathan Ryley played a young, fresh-faced Silly Billy, who engaged the children from his very first appearance. Dudley Rogers, as the somewhat potty professor, helped keep the pace of this production and wowed the audience with his high-kicks and splits during a dance routine. The pantomime had plenty of familiar numbers and traditional audience participation, as well as crowd-pleasing appearances, from ‘Wagner’ and ‘Harry Hill’. The Mark Andrews Dancers and Anita Tymcyshyn dancers excelled throughout their energetic and well-choreographed routines. Mark Andrews pulled out all the stops in this spectacular production, with stunning scenery and lighting, together with colourful and imaginative costumes.

Sweeney Todd ROCHDALE AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY

The Gracie Fields Theatre, Rochdale 22nd-26th February 2011 Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society had the audience on the edge of their seats, with their recent spine-tingling production of ‘Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’, directed by Michael JonesMcCaw, with Musical Direction by John Stevens. John Wood gave an exceptional performance as Sweeney Todd and was perfectly paired with the outstanding Joanne Gill, as Mrs Lovett, whose comic timing was spot-on. Claire Morris was suitably angelic as Johanna and showed off her strong vocal talents. Her knight in shining armour, Anthony, was played by the talented Gary Jones-McCaw, who also choreographed the production. Superb young actor Tom Shiels stole the show as Tobias, with a beautiful rendition of ‘Not While I’m Around’, whilst David Gill was suitably creepy as Judge Turpin.

Sarah Thewlis impressed with her fantastic acting skills and provided the laughs as ‘The Beggar Woman’, who of course, turned out to be Sweeney’s beloved wife. Other notable performances came from Richard Sanderson as Pirelli, Peter Wakefield as Beadle Bamford and Ian Wharmby as Fogg. By the end of the production, few of the cast had escaped the barber’s vengeful blade. Sweeney’s unlucky clients went straight down the trap door and into Mrs Lovett’s bakery… with the audience jumping out of their seats every single time! But Sweeney himself also met a gruesome end, thanks to young Tobias who had witnessed his evil deeds.

With an exciting, yet chilling score, a highly talented cast, strong chorus, spectacular scenery and a live orchestra, Rochdale Amateur’s production was certainly a thrilling night at the theatre. Rochdale Amateur’s next production will be The Sound of Music in February 2012.

The Peter Cowap Music Festival Sunday 1 May | 2pm-7pm | All tickets £5 Celebrating the life and work of legendary guitarist Peter Cowap, national and international acts appear in Middleton’s premier music festival held in aid of the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust. Born in Middleton, Cowap’s contribution to the music scene as guitarist, singer and songwriter started in the late 50s touring with Joe Brown and Marty Wilde. A member of the popular Middleton band, The Tremors he went on to form the Country Gents and toured in America with the Budgies. His recordings include collaborations and sessions with Graham Gouldman, John Paul Jones, Herman’s Hermits and 10cc. He died in July 1997 aged 53.

FUELING THE DEBATE As the cost of living debate rumbles on, with various factions all blaming someone else for the increase of fuel, families across the country are feeling the pinch. Of course, the advice we always get is to use public transport more or to walk or cycle but if you have a full Friday night shop or want to get somewhere after 6pm, the car is very often a necessity. So the question is how can you maximise every drop of extortionately-priced fuel. We are all familiar with the hybrid petrol-electric options available on cars like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, but there are now some alternatives available. FIAT 500 MULTI-AIR The Multi-Air concept takes the FIAT 500 right back to its roots. Back in 1957 the original cinquecento was powered by a 479cc two cylinder engine, which generated a whopping 13bhp. FIAT has now revisited the concept and given it a 21st century twist, for while the Nuevo 500 has the same number of cylinders, it has a slightly larger capacity at 875cc but thanks to a huge turbo-charger, it can produce 85bhp. For our older readers, memories of twin-cylinder engines are dubbed with the soundtrack from holidays on canal barges, but the 500 Multi-Air makes quite a nice noise, which is more of a fizz than a growl. FIAT quotes an official combined mpg figure of 68.9mpg, although out in the real world, which contains hills, you will struggle to get near this. When I drove the Multi-Air it did need a fair bit of revving when going up gradients, although an official emissions figure of 92g/km CO2 means your road tax will be gratis.

NISSAN LEAF At one time, electric technology in vehicles was confined to Milk Floats and Dodgems, but although Tesla will claim to be the first full scale manufacturer of an electric car, it is Nissan that will be the first to bring the technology to the mass market. The Nissan Leaf, propelled by an 80kW motor, is good for a top speed of nearly 90mph but the main consideration is the range. The lithium-ion batteries can last around 100 miles between full charges, although the good news is that a 75% charge can be done in around 30 minutes at a quick charge point, the likes of which are likely to pop up around the country in the next few years. A price tag of £24,000 may seem excessive for a car the size of a Ford Focus, but you need to remember that this is a five-seater family car that can be run from the plug in your garage and will never see a filling station, while the motor only needs limited servicing as there is just one moving part!

FOR EVERYONE ELSE… A new micro industry is popping up around the industry at the moment producing Bio-Diesel. What these companies do is take the vegetable oil from chippies and refine it into a fuel suitable for most diesel engines. I am told that oil used to fry Onion Bhajis makes the most potent fuel! Priced, as I write, at around £1.15 per litre it represents a significant saving over the price at the conventional pump and most engines will require no alterations. What you will need though when starting to use bio-diesel is a new fuel filter after around three tankfills as it actually benefits the engine by removing carbon deposits, which improves lubrication, but blocks the fuel filter. This shouldn’t cost more than around £50 at a local garage. n

TURBOT WITH ENGLISH ASPARAGUS AND COURGETTE FRITTERS

The asparagus season will soon be upon us, so indulge with one of my favourite fishes!

Serves 4 1 large courgette pinch curry powder 50g plain flour 1 egg-lightly beaten 50g dry white breadcrumbs vegetable oil for deep frying 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 x 200g fillets of Turbot-skinned and boned

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE NEWS WOOFS & WELLIES! A sponsored dog walk will take place on Saturday 4th June, starting and finishing at the Hospice and taking a circular 7k route. Commencing at 10am, £5 entry fee. Each pooch will receive a medal and there will be a prize for the best-dressed dog!

MIDNIGHT WALK Join Springhill Hospice for their ladies-only Midnight Walk on Saturday 16th July 2011. The fully marshalled walk is 6 or 13 miles, commencing from Middleton Arena on the stroke of midnight. Entry fee for the event is just £12 and all participants will receive a unique Midnight Walk t-shirt, medal, refreshments and a Certificate of Achievement. To assist with the operation of this event, Springhill Hospice are also looking for men to get involved as stewards and volunteers. Organisers are hoping that this event will raise enough money to at least cover one week’s running costs of the Hospice, which currently stand at around £52,000. CELEBRATING SUCCESS Rochdale Business Curry Club, held at Veenas in Heywood, celebrated its second birthday in February. The guests were welcomed upon arrival with a glass of bubbly, and the ever attentive Veenas staff, in their specially made Curry Club shirts to mark the occasion. Mr John Reid, The Heywood Toastmaster, did a splendid job in conducting the proceedings and Rochdale Police Acting Chief Inspector Nadeem Mir said a few words on Policing in the Borough and engagement with the local business community. Mr Peter Rowlinson, Head of Planning & Regulation at RMBC also gave an insight into some of the exciting future developments planned for the Borough. MAN OF THE YEAR A Rochdale fundraiser who has dedicated his time unselfishly to helping a fantastic cause has been named Rochdale Man of the Year 2010. Chairman of the Men of Rochdale Committee, Councillor Robert Clegg, announced the winner Garry Whitworth, at a prestigious luncheon held at the Rochdale Town Hall. Mr Whitworth, said “It is a total surprise and I almost didn’t make it to the luncheon. I am surprised, shocked and elated and certainly pleased I managed to get here. I have been nominated in the past but I never expected it.” Mr Whitworth is best known for his fundraising work for the GEM Appeal.

INTO THE DRAGONS DEN Pupils from Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College and Wardle High School have proved they have bright futures ahead of them. They demonstrated their excellent business skills at this year’s Young Enterprise Day, organised by Rochdale Borough Council and Hollingworth College to promote enterprise activities in schools. Twenty-five Year 9 pupils took part in the day-long event at Rochdale Town Hall. Pupils were encouraged to work co-operatively with people they’d not met before, to organise an event to raise money for a local charity. The winning team proposed organising a sport event aimed at giving families a great day out for a good cause.

A HEALTHY DAY OUT AT LIVE LIFE Residents were treated to a very healthy day out when Live Life returned to the borough.on 7th March. Over 1,300 people of all ages visited Rochdale Town Hall, with the big annual health, fitness, healthy eating and wellbeing show proving another big hit, dishing out a stack of ideas and free help, encouraging everyone to lead a healthier lifestyle. Link4Life hosted a series of workshops, including the art of Persian drumming, exercises for strengthening your back and timed competitions on rowing machines. There were demonstrations of Zumba – the dance fitness class that is taking the aerobics world by storm!

Husband and wife team, Danny and Joanne Gilchrist, celebrated their opening night at The Donkey (21 Syke Road), on Saturday 5th March. The evening was a great success, with local band The Fellons and DJ Will Star entertaining the crowd.
