INTRODUCTION DEAN GILMORE, Partnership Development Manager, Salford North School Sport Partnership “Welcome to Snapshot, our latest publication presenting just a flavour of the work of the School Sport Partnership. With every new edition we strive to reduce the words and increase the photographs. We hope you like our new look and we would welcome your feedback. For this particular edition we are very grateful to All Hallows RC Business, Enterprise and Sports College, DK Trophies, Ten94 Design and Sovereign Food and Wine for their support. Keeping true to the aims of 'SNAPSHOT' I'll end here. For the record, my favourite photograph is the little boy winning his race at School Sports Day. If we can inspire such joy in all the young people we work on behalf of, then we will have succeeded.”

PARTNERSHIP AMBASSADOR Sarah StoreY oBe SARAH STOREY OBE, Partnership Ambassador “Salford North School Sport Partnership is doing a fantastic job in providing sporting opportunities to the young people in their schools and I am delighted to be continuing in my role as their ambassador. School sport is a vital part of a young person’s development and doing well and enjoying sport from a young age makes it more likely for a person to continue being active into adulthood. The programme in Salford really is making an impact and I have seen for myself the difference in the way youngsters perceive themselves. Not only are they developing team work skills, they are benefitting from greater selfconfidence and the obvious effects from increased physical activity. I have been particularly impressed at the numbers of young people taking responsibility to lead and organise school sport events and the enthusiasm of teachers to increase their knowledge in PE. School sport set me up for a life in sport and with the programmes available through the partnership, today’s young people will have the opportunity to do the same.”

PROGRESS “Schools are delighted with the progress they have made in the last five years in PE and School Sport. As I visit them, they are always eager to show the wide-range of physical activities now on offer for young people. The partnership should be rightly proud of its contribution to the health and wellbeing of the children in Salford over that time, and the statistical evidence clearly shows the difference that the SSP is making.” ASSUMPTA O’CONNELL, Salford Healthy Schools

HUB SITE MONICA OWENS, Head teacher at All Hallows RC Business, Enterprise and Sports College “I am delighted to congratulate the School Sport Partnership on another year of spectacular progress with improvements made yet again in every key indicator. This has been achieved through the hard work and dedication of all the partnership staff and the commitment of the young people to engage in an increased range of sporting opportunities supported by their schools. I am particularly proud of the Young Ambassadors and Young Leaders that have made such a contribution to the work of the partnership and to the performers from participation to elite level that we were able to acknowledge and reward at our Award Ceremony in July. All Hallows continues to set new academic achievement records and values the role that sport has in contributing to achieving such success. As a Get Set Network school we are anticipating the opportunities that will be presented by the London Olympics and we look forward to working with the Partnership in contributing to a worthwhile legacy for the young people of Salford.

AWARDS OVERALL WINNER RECEIVING A CHEQUE FOR £1000 OAKWOOD “After narrowly missing out on the overall award last year, there was only one winner this year. This is a school with a wide-ranging offer in both curricular and extra-curricular activities, and a real sense of purpose and drive with all their work. With an average offer of 6.1 hours per pupil the winner is… Oakwood.”

PRIMARY VIEW “Salford North School Sport Partnership has enabled the children of St Augustine’s to experience a much wider range of sports than I thought possible in a Primary School. ” CLARE CAMPBELL, Head teacher “This year our children enjoyed new sports such as fencing, fishing and golf. They received expert coaching in rugby league, basketball and cricket through the School Sport Coaching programme and they broadened their experiences in a variety of Watersports as well as Street Dance and even Bollywood Dance. This was all in addition to the traditional programme of PE. These high quality experiences have given children a taste of sports they may never have had chance to experience outside school. Our teachers worked in partnership with the SSCo and coaches to signpost pupils to clubs in the community for sustained participation. Who knows, we may have the Olympians of the future in our Salford school.”

Sport partNerShip The International Inspiration Programme is the official sports legacy programme of the London 2012 games and Salford North SSP is delighted to be working with All Hallows RC in a partnership with SMJK Shing Chung in Malaysia. Reciprocal visits have already taken place with much being shared with each other and learned from each other. The students in both countries responded tremendously to their visitors and have been central to the success so far. A Partnership Plan is now in place and will take this relationship forward until 2012 and beyond. MISS CHEE, SMJK Shing Chung “For us at Shing Chung this trip is like the icing on the cake because this is the first time ever in the school's history that we have been involved in an international project. We are deeply honoured to be part of this project and our hope is that this programme will be the start of a beautiful and fruitful friendship between two schools.” MR TEING, SMJK Shing Chung

“The partnership plan between Shing Chung and All Hallows is just fine at the moment. We are developing effective leadership programmes to engage and involve students to support the teaching and learning of PE and sports. In other words, apart from leadership skills the students will also be equipped with certain sports skills to enable them to assist PE teachers during PE classes in future. Later, all the participants for the coming young leader course will then take on the role to achieve the objectives of the partnership plan.”

ALDAIR VICTORIANO, Platinum Young Ambassador “I was extremely proud to be chosen to welcome our honoured guests from Malaysia, including SMJK Shing Chung Principal Mr Choong Chee Kong and Mr Zamrus bin A. Rahman from the Ministry of Education. In my time as a Young Ambassador this was probably my most nervous moment, but also the most rewarding. International Inspiration is all about learning from each other and Mr Choong gave me some good advice that I intend to take. ‘School is a training ground which abounds with opportunities that you can take to realize your full potential as well-balanced individuals.’ I also intend to use this message in my Ambassador role in the future. “

RAMLI ABU ITAM, Perak State Education “As the officer who has some jurisdiction over the sports programmes at home, I shall ensure that International Inspiration is executed successfully to achieve its intended objective. I hope to extend this programme to more schools in Perak and if things go well to all of Malaysia. To All Hallows and Salford North SSP family a big thank you, whose members have passionately and generously fed us with invaluable information, knowledge and experience. Thank you very very much for your warm hospitality.”

SALLY GUNNELL OBE, speaking at the Annual Primary PE Conference “I am delighted to support this event, and I think the work you are doing to develop PE and school sport is fabulous. As the mother of three energetic boys, I know firsthand how crucial a role this plays in helping them be confident and happy in all that they do.” ELAINE GILMORE, Conference Organiser “It was fabulous to see so many people, supported by their Head Teachers, in attendance at this year’s Physical Education conference. Sally Gunnell set the tone for the day, reminding us how important we all are in influencing the choices young people make and the direction they take.”
