It’s finally time! After COVID-era restrictions, lockdowns and quarantines have made travelling a nostalgic memory; finally, we can dust off those suitcases and carry-ons once and for all! This issue is dedicated to our love of travel! If you’re anything like me, after a few years of limited-to-no travel, chances are you might feel a tad rusty when it comes to your packing strategies. Whether it’s remembering accessories that just can’t be left at home or choosing outfits for a three-day weekend, we hope that this issue will make getting back into the swing of things a little less stressful. If you’re gearing up for days spent by the ocean and evenings sipping an Aperol Spritz, we have all the swimwear trends to take you from the beach to the bar. If you’re looking to get fit for your next holiday or fashion-forward apparel to stay in shape on your vacation, turn to page 86 for the hottest new trends. Perhaps you’re on the hunt for beauty products that will give you a golden goddess glow. We have you covered, in addition to the newest makeup and beauty trends that celebrity makeup artist, Troy Jensen, swears by. Kimberly Randall Art Director

What is your favourite travel destination? I try not to visit places more than once, but one of my most memorable holidays was to the Maldives! Where do you stay? In the Maldives, I fell in love with Pullman Resort Maamutaa. Best spa? The overwater spa on Maamutaa is amazing, and they only use sustainable and eco-friendly products.

Troy Jensen

Photographer and Makeup Artist What is your favourite travel destination? A couple of years ago just before the pandemic, I was able to vacation for the summer in Capri an island off the coast of Italy. My time there was a nonstop celebration. The energy is wonderful and the people are so amazing! Where do you stay? I stayed on a friend’s yacht that wasn’t far from the quintessential Hotel du CapEden-Roc. I spent my days jet skiing and snorkelling with a little shopping and some sightseeing. Favourite restaurant? Aurora is among the most exclusive restaurants on the island! For more than a century, the Aurora Restaurant and Pizzeria, owned by the D’Alessio family, has been serving visitors to Capri with the finest food and wine. Best experience? One day we went to the famous Blue Grotto, which is a sea cave off the coast of Capri. Sunlight passes through an underwater cavity and shines through the seawater creating a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern. If you do happen to take a trip to Capri, you must see the famous Blue Grotto! What did you pack? As far as the famous Capri style, you want to bring something comfortable and very stylish, because one day you can be on the beach and the next out at a fabulous, chic restaurant and club for the evening. Having ensembles that go from day to night or from beach to bistro is essential when visiting Capri.

Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? I don’t normally shop when I travel; I prefer to spend my money on memorymaking experiences and delicious food. At Pullman, you have so many options including sunset cruises, dolphin cruises, snorkeling tours and so much more! If I do shop, I make sure it’s locally and sustainably sourced to support the economy and culture in the region.

Matt Dillon

Publicist and PR Director What is your favourite travel destination? My favourite travel destination by far has to be Maui, Hawaii. Where do you stay? Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea Favourite restaurant? Spago at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is known for the most amazing Hawaiian and Californian fusion and is just divine in every sense of the word. Best spa? Ho’omana Spa Maui is the most amazing authentic Hawaiian healing for body, mind and spirit. Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? Front Street in Lahaina is lined with art galleries, clothing stores and jewellery shops. The perfect place to shop!

Rebecca Montas

Holly Loos

What is your favourite travel destination? Since COVID, I have been enjoying staying local in Orlando, Florida.

What is your favourite travel destination? Maui, Hawaii

Graphic Design Assistant

Favourite restaurant? My favourite restaurant is Taverna Opa in Orlando. They serve Greek food and their Gyro Pita and Opa Fries are delicious! Best place for a cocktail? The best place for a cocktail is the House of Blues in Orlando, a bar and restaurant that has live music. Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? I like shopping at Sephora, and I usually pick up skincare and makeup products. I’ve been liking products from The Ordinary, Youth To The People, Rare Beauty, and ILIA lately. RETREATMAG.COM | 12

Editorial Assistant

Favourite restaurant? The Beach Club Restaurant at the Aston Kaanapali Shores has the best macadamia nut pancakes (with coconut syrup) for breakfast, as well as a mean pineapple veggie burger for dinner! Best place for a cocktail? Java Jazz is across the street from the Aston and a great place to get a Lava Flow or a Blue Hawaiian, as featured in Retreat’s Barside. Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? Whaler’s Village in Lahaina has everything. My favourite things to get are Hawaiian spices and ceramic coffee mugs!

Hannah Morrison Editorial Assistant

What is your favourite travel destination? My favourite travel destination is Punta Mita, Mexico. It’s a gorgeous, relaxing, and picturesque escape. I can’t wait to go back! Where do you stay? The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort. Favourite restaurant? Mita Mary’s has the best tacos and margaritas, right on the sand. Best place for a cocktail? I loved the drinks at Dos Catrinas at the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita next door. Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? I recommend shopping around Sayulita and picking up some locally-crafted items to bring home. It’s such a fun beach town to explore.

Robyn Damianos Fashion Photographer

What is your favourite travel destination? I have always loved Palm Beach! Where do you stay? We’ll usually stay at The Breakers Hotel. I married my husband there years ago so it always brings back lovely memories. Favourite restaurant? Echo Palm Beach for a sushi night!

Tylik Hill

Best spa? The Breakers hotel spa is amazing to relax in after a busy day of sightseeing or shopping.

What is your favourite travel destination? My favourite travel destination is Towson. It’s a small town in Baltimore County where I frequently go to visit my sister and it’s the one place where I get the best peace of mind, rest and time away from the hustle and grind of New York. It’s kind of weird but that’s what I like for my peace. Internationally, my favourite destination is Paris. There’s something to admire about the diverse variety of cultures especially when it comes to fashion and food.

Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? Honestly, the Palm Beach Mall has everything you might need. But for something closer to the hotel, Worth Avenue has plenty of small boutiques to pop into.

Visual Director and Editor

Where do you stay? When travelling I prefer boutique-style Airbnb. In France, there’s this cool little boutique hotel that I really like to stay at in the heart of St Vincent De Paul and 10th ARR called Hôtel Hor right on Rue La Fayette. Cool, cute and very affordable! Favourite restaurant? My favourite restaurant is Jasmin’s Caribbean Cuisine located in the heart of Restaurant Row in Hell’s Kitchen. It’s a must-visit.

Samantha Alvarado

Christopher Logan

What is your favourite travel destination? So far, my favourite travel destination has been Miami, Florida!

What is your favourite travel destination? Lisbon, Portugal

Editor

Favourite restaurant? I love going to Pincho Factory in Miami! The toston burgers are so good. Best spa? I haven’t been to a spa in Miami yet, but I would love to experience Lapis, the spa at Fontainebleau! Best place for a cocktail? Going out for cocktails in Wynwood in Miami is always a great time and fun vibe! Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? I love shopping at any small, local boutiques when I travel, and I always bring home any local art pieces I can find!

Photographer

Where do you stay? I like to stay in a unique Airbnb in the Bairro Alto neighbourhood. Favourite restaurant? Palácio Chiado Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? My favourite haunt for shopping is Feira Da Ladra, fondly known as “Lisbon’s Flea Market.” It’s a sea of vendors and shoppers alike. I typically bring home a bevy of vintage records and collectibles. Favourite Spa? BSpa by Karin Herzog Best place for a cocktail? Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina RETREATMAG.COM | 13

Best spa? WellZen Spa on Flatbush Avenue and Rutland Road. The level of service is impeccable. Best place for a cocktail? My favourite spot for a nice drink is Brooklyn Chophouse in Times Square. The ambiance is perfect for someone like me who likes to make anywhere my office, so, I get to get work done here and have a few sips. Where do you shop, and what do you bring home? My preference in shopping will always be Amazon Prime, so I don’t bring anything home cause it’s always delivered. However, when I do get out, my favourite spot to shop is Hudson Yards. There’s a wide range one can select from.

Skin

DEEP H O W TO P R OP ERLY CA RE FOR YOUR N E C K AN D D É COLLETAGE

Many of us pay a lot more attention to the skin on our face than we do to the skin on our décolletage. However, neglecting your décolletage can result in sun damage, premature wrinkling and other skin issues. We asked Dr. Kate Jameson, founder and medical director of Youth Lab, Australia’s leading medical aesthetics clinic specialising in non-surgical aesthetics and skin rejuvenation, to give us an inside to the best new professional treatments and the best at-home options. Some simple tips and treatments can help repair and restore the skin of your neck and decolletage as well as bring them back to life. “We invest so much time, money and energy into looking after our skin. We invest in expensive products, treatments, makeup and masks, but often the skin of our neck and decolletage is left neglected,” says Dr. Kate. “Once the changes associated with ageing start to affect the delicate skin of the neck and decolletage, they can be harder to treat, and once the damage is done, it is very difficult to repair.” “It is understandable to feel a bit skeptical about products designed for the skin of the neck and decolletage, but these areas of the body are often exposed to more UV than the face and have years of environmental damage from cumulative exposure to the sun and pollutants in the air,“ she says. “These changes can present themselves as wrinkles, skin laxity, textural changes and discolouration. This skin is much more delicate and thinner than that of the face, also meaning it will prematurely lose elasticity, accelerating these changes.” Read on for Dr. Kate’s best results-driven treatments and professional products to help you achieve your skincare goals.

Daily Habits Avoiding the sun as you would with your face is the most important preventative treatment to maintain healthy and beautiful skin for your neck and decolletage. Wear a hat, cover the areas with protective clothing, spend more time in the shade and apply sunscreen to these areas every single day. Sunscreen with a high SPF is essential and is the most important thing you can apply to the skin to delay the signs of ageing and prevent permanent damage. Start with simple skincare. It does not need to be an extensive seven-step routine morning and night. Start with a hydrating moisturizer under your sunscreen in the morning and one at night time. Investing in one specially formulated for the neck is a plus. Once you have started a simple routine adding some active ingredients such as vitamin C, antioxidants, peptides and retinol at night (much like your face) will help to stimulate collagen, increase cell turnover, exfoliate and give smoother and healthier skin. Luckily there are some amazing products containing all of the best neck-loving ingredients so you can invest in a single product and reap the benefits.

use of non-invasive, energy-based technologies. These treatments work to promote new, healthy collagen which results in skin tightening and wrinkle reduction. A firm favourite is the Lutrionic Genius Radiofrequency Microneedling Treatment. This treatment combines the thermal energy of radiofrequency and the benefits of micro-needling (which are well known). The Genius delivers the radiofrequency energy directly through the specialized microneedles; the treatment is more effective and delivers superior outcomes than either treatment alone. The Genius provides an immediate tightening due to thermal exposure resulting in a contraction of existing collagen and elastin fibres. Long-term, cells are stimulated, which work to produce new collagen, elastin and other components within the skin. This can occur for up to six months after the initial treatment. Think of RF micro-needling as the collagen stimulator like no other; we all lose 1% of collagen every year, so make 2022 your year to claim it back!

Texture

A favourite is PCA skin-perfecting neck and dec and Skinceuticals Tripeptide neck repair, which targets visible neck ageing in a retinol cream formulated with peptides and works to improve the appearance of wrinkles, crepiness and uneven skin tone.

There is nothing worse than the feeling of irregular and rough skin texture. A common concern for the neck and decolletage area is the sensation of the skin being rough to touch, with the formation of lumps and bumps, crepiness and deep lines.

Sagging Skin

A condition called Poikiloderma of Civatte is common in women especially and is caused by chronic sun damage resulting in irregular skin tone and texture, discolouration and pigmentation.

As we age, our skin gradually loses its firm and youthful appearance. The natural ageing process combined with sun exposure, environmental stressers, weight changes and poor skincare results in a reduction in the quality, strength and elasticity of the collagen within our skin. Crepiness to the neck and sagging skin is often the first sign of ageing. Skin sagging is best treated early to encourage new collagen formation. Luckily it can be improved with the

RETREATMAG.COM | 21

Textural changes from loss of elastin and collagen often need to be treated early, and laser is often the best option for those wanting to have a full rejuvenation. Not only can a laser treatment, such as the halo fractionated laser, treat textural irregularities, but it can also target all other concerns such as wrinkles, pigmentation, deep sun damage and redness. Add in its phenomenal long-

term stimulation of the skin’s collagen and elastin and you have a winner. The results from Halo are evident within a few weeks with more refined skin and the undeniable “halo glow” where the skin appears smoother, polished and looks airbrushed. In the following months, you then see an improvement from the slow collagen production. Most people are happy following a single treatment, but for significantly sun-damaged such as the neck and decolletage, a course of treatments may be needed.

Discolouration Discolouration of the skin of the neck and decolletage can appear as darkened areas of hyperpigmentation and sunspots, as well as excessive redness and visible blood vessels. Both redness, pigmentation and blotchy skin colour are due to UV exposure and sun damage. Unfortunately, there is only so much skincare you can do once skin damage is present. As with many skin conditions that are triggered by UV and sun exposure, the main focus of treatment is to prevent damage and repair damage by strict sun avoidance. Sometimes treatments may be needed to remove stubborn pigmentation and reduce blood vessel formation. The Sciton BBL treatment uses intense pulsed light to target discolouration in the skin. The BBL directs pulsed light energy, which is converted to heat energy when it reaches the top layers of skin, gently heating the tissue. This heat energy is then absorbed by certain targets such as fine broken blood vessels, which cause redness, and melanin, which causes pigmentation and brown spots. The light then damages the target, eliminating it from the skin and restoring the skin to its natural healthy condition. As a result, the skin appears more refined, with even colour and texture, giving a more youthful appearance. A course of treatments is generally recommended, and the BBL is the

perfect maintenance treatment to have each year to ensure the skin remains even and smooth for years to come.

THE SECRET, Neck & Decolletage Elixir, $200

Fine Lines Fine lines and wrinkles are not isolated to the face. Creases and wrinkles can form on the neck in the form of horizontal neck bands from the constant movement of the neck, and creases are common on the decolletage, which is often a result of sleep position. Lines and wrinkles are also exacerbated by dehydrated skin. Sleep creases and deeper wrinkles can all be prevented with highquality skincare, sun protection and collagen-stimulating treatments, but the best treatment for these lines is injectable procedures such as dermal fillers and skin boosters. Skin boosters are similar to dermal fillers in that they contain hyaluronic acid, the skin’s natural moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid maintains hydration of the skin by binding closely with water and supporting vital collagen and elastin. Skin boosters can be injected into the skin and directly into fine lines to add deep hydration, add firmness and fill stubborn lines. Skin boosters can be thought of as internal hydration in that they replace the hyaluronic acid in the skin. So rather than placing topical moisturisers and creams hoping for absorption, skin boosters moisturise from the inside, which also has the advantage of delivering immediate results for those after instant gratification.

Describe yourself in three words: Funny, honest and strong What are you most passionate about? My passion is performing and delving into my creative side. Who is your favourite actor? What would you tell your younger self? Just keep pushing forward; it will pay off! What is your favourite coming of age movie? Black Swan—coming from a competitive background in gymnastics, it was a very relatable movie for me. The noise of unattainable perfection was the reason I chose to walk away from all that. Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself working in the performing arts industry. I’d love to act in plays—being on stage, the energy with a live audience, is very exciting to me. Shooting for Retreat Magazine was such a great experience. It was my first fashion shoot and my second time shooting with Troy Jensen since I was three years old. I rushed to change each outfit on location in Venice Beach, California. I committed myself blindly to the day and the elements. Tattoo Removal: What You Need to Know

Many people regret having had an impulsive tattoo. Whether it was a “souvenir” from a holiday or the latest fad in cosmetic tattooing, laser tattoo removal is an excellent option if you have a tattoo you now regret. We asked Catherine Lee, founder of SKYN, Perth’s medical aesthetics destination since 2004, about the newest solutions for tattoo removal. WHAT IS LASER TATTOO REMOVAL?

POTENTIAL RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS?

Tattoo removal techniques have evolved over the years and the use of lasers, most commonly, the Q-switched (QS), Nd:YAG and Pico offer the best results with the least side effects, compared to older methods, such as surgical removal and dermabrasion that cause chemical destruction and debridement.

Local reactions can include blistering, swelling, crusting, erythema (redness) and pain. These are transient. Permanent side effects can occur and include scarring, hyper- or hypo-pigmentation and colour change of the tattoo pigment. Clients with darker skin types are at a higher risk for complications due to the melanin in their skin being a competing chromophore).

Tattoos are broadly divided into professional, amateur, cosmetic, traumatic and medical. An understanding of the type of tattoo will determine the parameters selected. Professional tattoos are applied with a machine into the deeper layers of the dermis and are more permanent. Amateur tattoos are usually lighter and applied more superficially, which renders them easier to remove. Cosmetic or permanent makeup (eyeliner, lips and brows) often contain red, brown, white or flesh-coloured inks containing titanium dioxide and iron oxide, which can be difficult to remove due to oxidation of the pigment. Traumatic tattoos are deposited into the skin from abrasions, accidents or explosions. Medical tattoos are often radiotherapy field markings. HOW DOES IT WORK? The laser technician must have a sound understanding of laser physics, parameters (settings), skin types (Fitzpatrick scale) and the nature, colour, age, layering of ink and location on the body of the tattoo. This ensures the proper parameters are chosen, such as wavelength, fluence and pulse for optimal outcome. The wavelength is preferentially absorbed by the ink particles causing a photoacoustic reaction rupturing or exploding the pigment contained cells. The body's immune system is then triggered and the debris is removed from the system over time. Hence the spacing of treatments. IS IT SAFE? Yes! An initial consultation to ascertain the client's medical history, expectations, potential risks, side effects and aftercare are discussed. Client consent and photos are taken. The type of tattoo and skin type is paramount to assess before the treatment. Once these are established, correct wavelength and parameters are selected. Appropriate aftercare, such as sun avoidance, is important post-treatment.

RETREATMAG.COM | 53

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR LASER TATTOO REMOVAL? Most people are candidates providing they meet the criteria. Parameters can be adjusted for darker-skinned individuals and they will require more treatment sessions. Sun avoidance and compliance with aftercare is most important! IS IT PAINFUL? Topical numbing is applied for 30-40 minutes prior to treatment, so generally, it is comfortable. HOW LONG DOES LASER TATTOO REMOVAL TAKE? Treatment times depend on the size of the tattoo. If it is a large area, such as a “sleeve,” the tattoo is broken up into sections and treated at intervals, not on the same day. Generally, the treatment time takes approximately five minutes; this is the appropriate size for the amount of numbing that can be safely applied and not toxic to the body. The numbing part of the appointment is the longest. HOW OFTEN DOES IT NEED TO BE PERFORMED? Laser treatments are approximately eight weeks apart and a number of treatments vary depending on the tattoo, location on the body etc. Eyebrows generally respond well, and five or fewer treatments are required. Larger tattoos on legs can require 10 plus treatments. HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST? Results are permanent. Generally, black and dark blue tattoos respond the best; coloured pigments are less responsive and make take more sessions.

NOBODY DOES IT BETTER THAN . . . Troy Jensen PHOTOGRAPHED BY PETER SVENSON Styling by Social Butterflies Los Angeles

For years, celebrity makeup artist and photographer, Troy Jensen, has been the go-to guy for making memorable beauty looks and developing some of today’s iconic beauties, including pulse-racing looks for the likes of Megan Fox, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Salma Hayek, Naomi Campbell, Nicole Scherzinger and has also worked with icons including Diana Ross, Diahann Carroll, Catherine Deneuve and Farrah Fawcett.

Have you ever wondered how to get sultry, edgy makeup? Troy Jensen shares his tips with Retreat.

It’s interesting that much of my career now is about developing an image for new talent and brands. I still use influences from my past decades to build an image for my clients today that is unique to their profession. When it comes to my favourite beauty looks, I’m kind of old school in that if something works for me, I stick with it. There are some techniques and styles that just make a face beautiful. The fun part of my work is to make these styles freshly work on my clients.

I have been doing makeup for a long time now, but what I’m most proud of in my career is the diversity of my clients through the years. At the beginning of my career, there were not a lot of makeup product choices for people of colour. So I would mix my own skin tone formulas of foundation, highlighters and lip colours, using pure pigments and mixing them with cream or oil. Today, most beauty brands offer a wide range of shades for all skin tones, but I still use my own formulas and concoctions today. They just work!

WENDY BOTH My longtime friend and muse, Wendy Both, is my first model. I’ve known Wendy for a couple of decades now, and she has been one of my favourite faces to glam. I have transformed her into everything from a high fashion vampire to Hollywood femme fatale, Ava Gardner. In addition to modeling, Wendy is also a reiki master, intuitive guide and medium for people and animals. She helps to heal her clients on all levels; physical, mental, emotional and spiritual by giving them the tools to cultivate a healthy lifestyle. For this look, I wanted her to look fresh and casual with dewy skin, bronzed cheeks, smokylined eyes and a nude lip.

RETREATMAG.COM | 56

SKIN To start, I mixed Dior Capture Totale Super Potent Serum Foundation with Dior Prestige Serum using my Troy Jensen Pro-Artist Luxury Flat-Top Kabuki Foundation Brush No. F06 for an ultra dewy-looking complexion.

CHEEKS I applied Dior Rouge Blush in #365 New World using my Pro-Artist Luxury Blush Brush No. F08. I began by spraying MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish / Wild Cherry in shade Petallic Metallic on the brush before picking up any colour. This gives a natural wash of colour to the cheeks while keeping the skin looking dewy.

EYES Dramatic eye makeup is fun to create. When creating a bold eye look, I love to define the entire eye by smudging a brown or black eyeliner. Then, I will apply my eyeshadow. The liner gives me a great base to start and determines the shape and depth of the eye makeup. I applied MAC 24-Hour Black Kajal Eyeliner along the upper and lower lash line then smudged it with my ProArtist E10 Dense Shading Brush. This short dense rounded brush is ideal to blend kohl, cream and gel liners. To groom Wendy’s eyebrows, I used my Pro-Artist E02 Brow Brush and Eyelash Comb Duo to brush up her brows and then I used MAC Shape + Shade

Brow Tint in Spiked. I love this dualended brow pen to define thin, hair-like strokes and the opposite end is a powder applicator to set. My E02 Brow Brush comes in handy when perfecting the shape of the brows. Once I determined the shape and depth, I applied a matte eyeshadow to intensify and smoke out the eye. I then curl the eyelashes and apply a few coats of black mascara. I’m obsessed with MAC’s Stack Mascara. I’ll layer a few coats, but in between I’ll take my Pro-Artist Luxury Eyelash Comb & Brow Brush Duo No. E02 to comb the lashes upward immediately after applying the mascara. This will maximize the effects of this amazing formula for long, thick looking lashes.

LIPS I used MAC Lip Liner In Whirl “A Dirty Rose Shade.” I dipped the tip of the lip-liner into a cream moisturizer. I used the Dior Prestige La Creme Texture Essentielle. I dipped the tip of the liner into a dab of cream to dilute the texture of the lip liner for definition. It glides on so sheer and natural and isn’t at all waxy. Finally, I applied Dior Stellar Lipgloss In J’adior #640 “A Dark Nude.” I love this gloss and Wendy loved how it felt like a lip balm and gave her lips a radiant plumping effect.

MAC STACK Mascara, $49

CANDICE NEILL

Candice Neill is a model with Vision Models Los Angeles. On Candice, I created a bold winged tip eye and matte beige lip, inspired by screen siren, Anita Ekberg, in the film La Dolce Vita circa 1960. I first worked with Candice when she was 13 for a beauty chapter for Tyra Bank’s book, Beauty Inside & Out. I remember the day that I met Candice. She was so beautiful. Her father had brought her to the set that day, and he was so excited for her to be in Tyra’s book. I’m sure he must be so proud because since then, Candice has become one of the most sought-after faces for beauty brands. She has appeared in countless beauty campaigns and magazine editorials and has also starred in a few feature films like Mass Effect and Winter Dragon. I knew when I met her that she would go on to be a successful model. It’s great to see that she has successfully established herself in the beauty and entertainment industry. Candice has naturally big eyelids that are ideal to carry off the Italian starlet eye. She has the perfect face for this bold “la dolce vita” look. Flawless skin, sculpted cheeks, bold brows, dramatic eyes and a subtle lip. She looks gorgeous!

MAC, Art Library Nude, $90 E14 Soft Shading Brush E18 Dense Blending Brush E20 Round Crease Brush F02 Foundation Brush

MAC, Brushstroke 24-Hour Liner, $41

SKIN I started by prepping Candice’s skin with MAC Prep + Prime Fix & Wild Cherry Hydrating Setting Spray. I also sprayed it on both girls during the shoot to give their skin an added glow. The beautiful cherry blossom scent gave us all a lift, like aromatherapy.

EYES After prepping the skin I start with the eyes. This look needs bold brows, and to achieve them I used a couple of products. First, I defined the brows slightly larger than Candice’s natural brow shape with MAC Veluxe Brow Liner In Deep Dark Brunette, using my Pro-Artist E02 Brow Brush And Eyelash Comb Duo. The brow brush softens the texture of the liner as I layer the colour. I then used MAC Shape + Shade Brow Tint in Spiked to add a hair-like definition. Finally, I set with MAC Brow Set for added shine and style. Before I applied the eye makeup, I used the Mac Studio Fix Correct Palette in Medium using my Pro-Artist E14 Soft Shading Brush to blend into the skin around the eyes. This brush is ideal for the application of concealer and touchups throughout the day. Next, I applied a matte eyeshadow in a bone shade. I used MAC Art Library Nude Model Eyeshadow Palette, which

has the matte shades that I wanted for this look. To define Candice’s eyes I begin with bone over the entire eye as a base. Then I use medium shades to add depth into the crease using my ProArtist E18 Dense Blending Brush and my Pro-Artist E20 Round Crease Brush. Finally, to define the shape of the wingtip, I used the dark matte brown from the palette and my Pro-Artist E04 Angled Eyeliner Brush to sketch out the length and thickness of the wing. I filled it in using the dark matte shadow and dampened the angel brush to get a precise shape, and then I layered it with MAC’s Brushstroke 24-Hour Liquid Eyeliner Pen in Brush Black. I then curled her lashes and applied MAC Stacked Black Mascara. Then I applied Kiss Lash Couture Kit. These faux lash extension clusters blend in with Candice’s lashes. I applied the longer clusters to the outer ends of the eye to enhance the winged liner. Once the eyes are perfected I’ll move onto the face. I swipe under the eyes to clean up any fallen shadow then apply the Mac Prep & Prime Spray onto my Pro-Artist F02 Foundation Brush. This flat oval brush is my go-to when applying creams and serums on the skin. I applied Dior Capture Totale Super Potent Serum Foundation in 2w Warm. I dabbed a touch of this shade under the eyes, cheeks, and around the mouth blending it in with RETREATMAG.COM | 59

my brush. I then dabbed on a deeper shade around the forehead, edges of the temples and into the cheekbones. This time using my Pro-Artist Luxury Blush Brush No. F08 to add warmth to Candice’s complexion. I used the kabuki brush to blend this shade onto the neck and chest. I set her makeup with Dior forever cushion powder in 030# medium. I used my Pro-Artist F12 Large Powder Brush to evenly set the makeup.

CHEEKS On her cheeks, I used MAC Mineralized Blush in Love Thing and Humour Me. I dusted both shades onto Candice’s cheekbones and across her forehead, and I used my Pro-Artist F08 Blush Brush to sculpt her features and then to apply a fresh hint of colour on the apples of her cheeks. I finished by spraying a mist of MAC Fix+Wild Cherry Prep and Prime.

LIPS I applied Revlon New Matte 001# Lipstick in Untold Stories, a beautiful matte nude. Mixing and manipulating colour and textures will always be my thing. It’s all paint to me. And my Pro-Artist Luxury Brushes are designed to do whatever you need them to do. No limits, just a beautiful application.

QA &

Do you prefer to be known as a makeup artist or photographer? Honestly, I don’t like labels, but if I must choose one, I’m an artist, and it’s difficult for me to consider myself just a makeup artist or just a photographer. I do so much more with my clients. My process starts with my vision, then I create style and mood boards of what I’m envisioning for my client. I put a lot of time and work into it before I even touch a face. Then I put the actual production together with wardrobe and backdrops. I have a little studio in my house that makes it convenient when developing a client or shooting beauty content. I guess that’s what sets me apart from a professional makeup artist in that I’m more of an image-maker. Beauty is my passion, and photography has always been an important way for me to perfect my skill and develop myself as an artist. Before iPhones, I used to carry this Polaroid camera with me to capture my finished makeup look on my models or clients. Do you see yourself as an influence for younger makeup artists? I see my influence in the industry here and there, especially with the younger artists, and with some influences of the work I did in the 90s as a makeup artist with artists like Vanessa Williams, En Vogue and Courtney Love and some of my early red carpet work like when I glammed Bjork for the Oscars when she wore the infamous swan dress. I love to hear from makeup artists. I get greetings and positive comments on my work from makeup artists, and I consider RETREATMAG.COM | 60

it to be the best. Also, when I get to meet the younger makeup artists and they tell me how much I have inspired them to start a career in makeup. I love to hear that and it’s what inspired me to develop my Pro-Artist Luxury Brush collection. The collection is designed for “the artist” and those who want to create intricate beauty looks like a pro. Each brush is designed to do a very specific thing. From creating a perfect complexion, grooming flawless eyebrows and defining the latest trends on the eyes, cheeks and lips. There are 17 brushes in the entire collection, but I seriously could’ve had twenty. This season is all about Euphoria, graphic eyes and sculpted features, and to create some of this season’s popular makeup looks, having the right brushes and tools are essential. What inspired you to create your ProArtist Luxury Brush collection? It’s my passion for beauty that keeps me growing as an artist. Especially now that I have a brand with my name on it and a collection of Pro-Artist brushes that I’m so proud of. When I was designing my Pro-Artist brush collection, it was all about the details. The length is slightly longer than traditional brushes. I made them feel more like painter’s brushes so they have a weight and solidness to them, when you are holding them and the handcrafted handle helps give balance and precision to your hand. I developed them with a brand new micro-fibre and synthetic hair technology, and the handle is made with wood from a certified forest, making them environmentally friendly. The texture of the brush fibre was the most important to me, as many of my clients have sensitive skin. Creating something functional, beautiful and vegan friendly is my goal with this collection and anything else I develop with my company. From the beginning, I knew I wasn’t going to use any kind of animal hair, so of course they had to be the softest synthetic brushes on the market, and I’m glad to say… they are! What influenced you to work as a photographer? I have always been interested in film and photography. For years, I have collected vintage beauty, fashion and photography books that are dated from the 1920s to now. I love the works of Richard Avadon, David Bailey, Francesco Scavulo, George Hurrell, Helmut Newton and Sam Haskins, and today’s photographers like Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Herb Ritts and Matthew Rolston, whom I

worked with and learned so much from about lighting, sets and how to run a production. I kept my photography secret for years, until I met Kim Kardashian, and she started releasing my images of her on social media and in various product campaigns. It put me out there, and there was no turning back. I now work as a makeup artist and photographer, and I think people now get what I do—shooting everything from private clients, celebrities and an occasional cover for Retreat, as well as numerous beauty, fashion and jewellery campaigns. I create an image, and makeup and photography are my tools. My creative vision, along with almost 40 years of experience, makes me a go-to guy for anyone looking to develop themselves in the world of beauty, fashion and the entertainment industry. You have worked with a lot of celebrities like Jennifer Lopez. What are some of your favourite looks you’ve done for her and others? My favourite look that I did with J-Lo was for the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. I did this gorgeous pastel blue eye with a thin-winged liner and a pale pink lip. It was really beautiful. I also just photographed actress Catalina Sandino Moreno, who I met in 2005 when she was nominated for an Academy Award, and I did her makeup very soft and glamorous for the red carpet. For our recent shoot, I gave her a very haunting edgy film noir look with pale dewy skin, glossy black smudged eyes and a very dark lip. Do you have highlights from working in the industry as long as you have? Having had the opportunity to be faceto-face with the most incredibly talented and beautiful artists and performers and to be able to travel all over the world has been incredible. Behind the scenes too. Working alongside the best wardrobe and hairstylists in the industry. I have learned so much, and I love doing what I do. I create beauty; what’s better than that? It’s amazing to see my name credited in a magazine, but to see my name on my Pro-Artist Brushes has to be the ultimate highlight of my career. Who are your beauty icons? My first beauty icon was my mother, Gloria. I would watch her do her makeup in awe. Then everything from Bond girls, to Jane Fonda in Barbarella, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith from Charlie’s Angels. I love silent movie stars from the 1920s like Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino and 1970s artist, Antonio Lopez, the Studio

54 disco era supermodels like Jerry Hall, Pat Cleveland and Lauren Hutton. I get much of my inspiration from films, old vintage fashion magazines and travelling around the world. Seeing real people in different parts of the world is the best for people watching and getting inspired. Each city has its own beauty culture, and I love watching how these different cultures do their makeup. I really love old Hollywood glamour and reinventing it on my clients in a modern way for the red carpet. Retro glamour can often look like a Halloween costume, so for me it’s not about transforming my client into Marilyn Monroe, although I have done just that. It’s about highlighting an era and using techniques used by past artists and keeping their legacy alive while teaching my younger assistants to appreciate the nostalgia. I encourage them to reinvent these retro techniques with updated products on every muse they meet. What was the first piece of makeup you ever bought? Revlon everything! When I first started, I couldn’t afford expensive makeup brands like Dior, so I stocked my kit with Revlon, and I still use them today. Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation is great, and I have every shade. I also love Milani cosmetics and NYX, which are all found at your local drugstore. What’s your favourite form of self-care? Hanging out with my Frenchies, Mylo, Mads and Gigi. They are the best therapy for whatever is going on with me or in the world. I’m an animal lover, and besides spending time with my pups, I also am involved with animal rescue. I often use my platform for dog rescues and use my social media to get them adopted. It isn’t only my way to give back, but I also really love it, and next to the beauty, it’s also a passion of mine. If I never did makeup again, I would be involved with animal rescue without a doubt. We share this world with so many different animals; they all have a life, and we should be protecting them and considering them. Can you give us recommendations on what makeup products you think everyone should own? A great moisturiser and foundation that works for your skin type and skin tone, an eyelash curler, black mascara and a tinted cheek and lip balm. And of course, my Pro-Artist Luxury Makeup Brushes because the best beauty looks start with the best brushes and tools. OLIVIA PONTON Written by Carlos Lacayo

Y

ou’ll be hearing Olivia Ponton’s name a lot more in 2022 (if you haven’t already). The Naples, Florida native is a social media sensation, garnering over 11 million followers across multiple platforms (with 3.5 million Instagram followers, 7.8 million on TikTok and 144k subscribers on YouTube). Ponton has also racked up 780 million views (with 777.8M on TikTok and 3.8M on Instagram) since first amassing notoriety in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I never really processed it at the time,” Ponton explains. “I wasn’t going out and interacting with other people, so I saw these crazy numbers, but it wasn’t really processing. When I moved to LA it started processing a little more.”

Fortunately, this hasn’t slowed her down at all, as she has already modelled and worked with brands such as SKIMS, Alice and Olivia, L’Agence, Nicole Miller, Juicy Couture, Frankie’s Bikinis, Beach Riot, Steve Madden, Marc Jacobs Fragrance and Ralph Lauren. She was also the face of Benefit Cosmetics’ Summer Brow Campaign available in ULTA stores worldwide and a photoshoot for lifestyle brand, LoveShackFancy in St. Barts. “It’s always been a dream of mine to go to St. Barts, and to not only be able to go but to work there was even crazier,” Ponton explains. “I was on these stunning beaches and in these beautiful houses shooting in these dream dresses. It was a surreal experience.”

The 19-year-old came to prominence through showcasing the beautiful Florida beaches many of us wished we could visit at the beginning of the pandemic, as well as outdoor workouts that showcased her bubbly, fun and honest personality. “Working out has just been a huge part of my life, and filming motivated me because if I wanted to film, I had to do the workout for it,” Ponton states.

Ponton has been announced as a Sports Illustrated Swim Rookie for the class of 2022. Her spread, which she shot in Montenegro this past October, will be featured in the magazine released this month. “Sports Illustrated is all about you being you, and that’s what makes them so special,” Ponton says. “Just to be a part of the group of women they empower means so much.”

Olivia uses her social media platforms to promote happiness and positivity while staying true to herself. She explains that it’s really easy to get caught up in some of the things that come with fame, but doing what makes you happy grounds you. Ponton said, “I’m very much a people-pleaser to the point where I had to start saying ‘no’ to other people and ‘yes’ to myself.”

NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY FACE

Growing up, Ponton always wanted to model. With no immediate access to the industry, the Florida native applied to Wilhelmina Models online. After Wilhelmina’s New York agency expressed interest, Ponton flew out (along with her parents) for a meeting and contract signing. “It was such an amazing day, and I was so excited— and then it just all came to a stop,” Ponton explains, as the world went into lockdown the day she flew home and her modelling dreams seemed to be indefinitely put on hold.

INFLUENCING SELF-DISCOVERY

Ponton came out publicly as bisexual in an interview with Teen Vogue last year with the hope of inspiring other young people to confidently embark on their journey of self-discovery— whatever that may be or mean to them. She’s gone on record saying it’s okay for young people to not be aware of their sexuality until they mature a bit. “I don’t think there should ever be pressure. When you’re growing up your body is going through so many changes already,” Ponton says. “I feel that we shouldn’t be influencing kids into one sexuality or not. I know when I have children, I’m going to be super accepting of whatever. I feel like we’re going to see a lot of acceptance as my generation grows up.”

RETREATMAG.COM | 115

LEARNING & RAISING AWARENESS Among the many positive things, Ponton uses her platform for, awareness of issues that are important to her is high on the list. Her love of the ocean has resulted in her partnership with the 4OCEAN organization, including her participation in ocean clean-ups and her determination to spread awareness about the current plastic crisis. “Growing up in Florida we have beautiful beaches, and I took it for granted. I didn’t process that not all the beaches in the world look like Naples’s beaches. When I started travelling more often, I was able to see the damage that was happening because of our trash,” Ponton explains. “Using my platform to spread awareness about that is absolutely important. It’s one of those things that people don’t accept if they can’t see it’s happening.” In addition to her oceanic efforts, she actively supports The World Harvest Food Bank, Paw Works and GLAAD, where she was educated on the LGBTQ+ community before coming out as bisexual. “Working with them has just been educational on my end. Now, I get to go help and talk to other people about what is going on in the LGBTQ+ community.” When asked about things that stood out to her from her GLAAD education session she said, “We talked about Disney princesses. They always have a prince and a princess, and kids are influenced by the prince/princess dynamic at a young age.” She goes on to say, “You never see two princes or two princesses together. I’ve always wanted there to be two princesses together but maybe that’s just me.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Ponton is staying busy this year. On top of the Sports Illustrated launch, Ponton is a 2022 American Eagle Ambassador and has a partnership with Nudestix as an investor and collaborator. Olivia and Nudestix will be releasing products throughout 2022, which will be available in ULTA stores. When speaking on the upcoming year, Ponton says, “I feel like the world is truly my oyster.”

ACLER

shopacler.com When co-designers Kathryn Forth and Julia Ritorto first met to conceptualise Acler, their common goal was to rebel against cookie-cutter digital design and bring the design process back to its fundamentally tactile roots. Each Acler piece is developed over a process of 12 months and is subtly redrafted, and redraped along the way, allowing the design to take on its form naturally. The end result is a meticulously constructed piece, which has an organic sculptural shape and an ultimately refined minimalism.

Charlotte Mckinney’s Holiday Rules Holding the title of one of the “Sexiest Women” by GQ, actress and model Charlotte McKinney grew up in Orlando and climbed the modelling ladder from Miami to Malibu. In addition to pursuing acting and modelling, McKinney is a longtime supporter of Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization that aims to create opportunities for those with developmental disabilities. She also works heavily with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Outside of work and her philanthropic work, Charlotte aims to live a healthy and active life by practising hot yoga and Pilates, along with maintaining a clean and healthy diet. For more, follow Charlotte on Instagram @charlottemckinney! AIRPORT STYLE? I’m all about comfort when it comes to travel. I’m obsessed with Split59 legging flare pants. They’re stylish and super comfortable! PACKING STRATEGY? In the past, I’d always wait until the last minute and miss flights! Nowadays I like to start a few days before a trip and slowly add stuff in so that I’m not scrambling last minute. GO-TO LUGGAGE? I love Away luggage because it’s super light and chic for travel.

BEAUTY KIT ESSENTIALS? I never go anywhere without my Dr. Barbara Sturm products. I’ve also been loving beauty tools lately. I’ve tried the SolaWave and it’s a red light, microcurrent wand that is amazing for reducing puffiness. It’s perfect for travel!

Photographed by Veronica Sams WHAT DO YOU READ? If I have any self-tapes coming up I spend my time on the plane reading scripts. I also love to write while flying!

MINI-BAR MUST? I’m so big on hydration, so I love water and coconut water. Some nuts to snack on too!

IN-FLIGHT RITUALS? I’m all about staying hydrated while flying, so I always have a massive water bottle on the flight. I also love to take a little CBD from Papa&Barkley that helps me relax and sleep. I also love Milk make-up eye patches to wear on the plane.

FAVOURITE SPA? It’s so hard but if I had to pick one it would be Six Senses Spa Fiji for a film. That was one of the most beautiful spas I’ve ever been to, complete with saunas and ice baths.

FAVOURITE VACATION SPOT? Most of my family lives in the Bahamas, so growing up that is where I would always go. It never gets old and brings back so many amazing memories. I also love the Amalfi Coast, and I usually go in August for my birthday. TOP HOTEL? That’s so hard! There are so many good ones! I love the Ocean Club in the Bahamas and Le Sirenuse in Positano.

LAST GREAT SOUVENIR? I love to collect ashtrays from my travels (I know, kind of weird), but I got a beautiful one in Capri last time I was there. BEST PLACE FOR A COCKTAIL? To me, it’s all about the company and an ocean view! My favourite is the bar at Ocean Club in the Bahamas; I always have too much fun there!
