Cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular over the years as a way to enhance your appearance and reduce the signs of ageing. However, the risks and potential complications associated with these procedures have resulted in many seeking out non-surgical alternatives, which have fewer risks, quicker recovery and can still deliver beautiful results. We turned to Dr Kate Jameson, founder and medical director of Youth Lab, Australia’s leading medical aesthetics clinic specialising in non-surgical aesthetics and skin rejuvenation, about the advances in non-surgical procedures.

What are the most common non-surgical alternative treatments to have you looking (and feeling) fresher, younger and more confident?

Alternatives to a Face Lift: Collagen Stimulating Mono PDO Threads

A facelift is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce sagging skin and wrinkles. However, for those looking for a non-surgical alternative, collagenstimulating Mono PDO threads offer an effective solution. PDO (polydioxanone) threads are thin, biodegradable sutures that are inserted under the skin to lift and tighten the face. The procedure is relatively quick and painless and there is limited downtime.

PDO threads not only provide an immediate lifting effect but also stimulate the production of collagen, which improves skin elasticity and firmness over time. They slowly dissolve within the skin over months, leaving behind new collagen and elastin, resulting in firmer and tighter skin. The procedure is minimally invasive and requires no incisions or anesthesia, making it a safer and more accessible option for those who wish to rejuvenate their appearance without undergoing surgery.

Alternatives to a Blepharoplasty: Radiofrequency Skin Tightening

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is often performed to address drooping eyelids and remove excess skin or fat from the eyelid area. It is the gold standard treatment for those with hooded eyes, eye bags and saggy skin. Unfortunately, non-surgical options have always been limited in the eye area but for some people seeking a non-surgical alternative, radiofrequency (RF) skin tightening can be an effective option.

RF skin tightening uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting skin tightening. As radiofrequency is not a laser, it is safe to do very close to the eyes and can effectively treat the skin around the eye to stimulate collagen production over time. This treatment can effectively reduce the appearance of sagging eyelids and fine lines around the eyes, giving a more rested appearance. It may not remove the excess skin but It is a non-invasive procedure with minimal downtime, allowing you to achieve a more youthful and refreshed look without the need for surgery.

Alternatives to Liposuction: Fat Dissolving Injections and Body Contouring

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from various areas of the body and can be very effective if large areas need to be treated or if the fat is stubborn and resistant to diet and exercise. Unfortunately, liposuction can be expensive with a long recovery. With recent technological advances those seeking body contouring and treatment of stubborn fat now have a wide array of non-surgical options at their disposal. The most popular of these are fat-dissolving injections and body contouring with CoolSculpting.

Fat-dissolving injections are an approved injectable treatment that contains a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid (a natural acid found within our body that breaks down fat in food). When injected into targeted areas, such as the chin or jawline, it destroys fat cells, resulting in a more contoured and defined appearance. The treatment requires a series of injections over several sessions, and the results gradually improve over time. It is a safe and effective alternative to liposuction, with minimal downtime and reduced risks associated with surgery.

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses controlled cooling to target and freeze fat cells. The frozen fat cells are then naturally eliminated from the body over time, resulting in a more sculpted and toned appearance. Coolsculpting can be used all over the body, from the abdomen, outer and inner thighs, arms and even double chins. The procedure is comfortable and relaxing and normal activities can be resumed straight away.

Alternatives to a Rhinoplasty: NonSurgical Rhinoplasty with Dermal Fillers

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, is a common procedure to address cosmetic and functional concerns of the nose. A rhinoplasty is not an easy decision for many, with significant recovery times, costs involved and a permanent outcome following the operation. Many who suffer from lumps and bumps in the nose, who may be considering surgery, may actually be suitable for a non-surgical rhinoplasty using dermal fillers. This treatment can provide a temporary but effective solution, all without the risks of surgery.

During a non-surgical rhinoplasty, dermal fillers using hyaluronic acid are strategically placed to reshape and contour the nose. This procedure can address concerns such as a dorsal hump, asymmetry, or a drooping nasal tip. The results are immediate, and there is minimal downtime involved. Many may eventually decide to progress with surgery, but this option can give the impression of a surgical result in the meantime.

Alternatives to Fat Transfer: Dermal Fillers and Collagen Stimulators

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, involves harvesting fat from one part of the body and transferring it to another area to add volume and enhance facial contours. Popular areas for fat grafting are the breasts and the cheeks. When fat grafting is used in the face it can look very natural, unfortunately in some cases the fat does not last long and the results are very temporary.

A downside of fat grafting is also the surgical procedure (liposuction to remove the fat) and the possible need for multiple treatments. The non-surgical alternatives such as hyaluronic acid dermal fillers and collagen stimulators can add facial volume, restructure the face and enhance the beauty in a single, 30-minute treatment with minimal downtime.

Dermal fillers can be used to add volume and restore youthful contours to the face. They can address concerns like hollowed cheeks, deep wrinkles and folds, loss of jawline definition and thin lips. Collagen-stimulating injections, such as Sculptra, work by stimulating the production of collagen in the skin. This gradual collagen production leads to improved skin texture, volume, and firmness over time. Sculptra is commonly used to restore volume in the cheeks, temples, and other areas of the face. When combined or used separately, dermal fillers and collagen stimulators can give far superior results than fat transfer without the need for surgery.

Cosmetic surgery may offer significant transformations, but it is not the only option for those seeking to enhance their appearance. With advancements in non-surgical procedures, alternatives to traditional surgeries have emerged, providing effective and safe solutions for various cosmetic concerns, without going under the knife. It is of course, important to consult with a qualified medical professional to determine the most suitable alternative for your own unique goals.

Tell us about your experience working on your first feature film with Paramount Pictures, At Midnight.

It was super cool because that was my first audition ever. It was just really inspiring to watch and learn from the other actors, and getting to shoot in Mexico was a bonus!

What do you hope to accomplish in your career over the next five years?

I have some massive goals on my list, but I want to continue acting and launch my own brand soon!

You’ve talked about empowering women through positive thinking and self-love. Can you elaborate on why this mission is so important to you?

Every woman deserves to feel empowered, confident and capable of achieving their dreams! Our thoughts and internal dialogue play such a major role in what we’re manifesting and creating for our own lives. When you make the conscious decision to focus on the good in your life and the attributes that you love and cherish about yourself, the goodness multiplies.

As a successful model and actress, what advice do you have for aspiring models just starting in the industry?

Create clear goals and make a manifestation list for yourself. Ask yourself, what clients do you want to work for? Which directors do you want to work with? Write it all down. Make this vision so clear in your head that there is no other option. You really have to believe in yourself so strongly that others are convinced to as well.

You’re also passionate about interior design, fashion and beauty products. Can you share some of your favourite trends or styles with us?

I recently bought a house, and interior design has become my new addiction! It’s hard to label my interior design style. I love natural and rustic elements, tons of natural light. Arches and natural stones are always amazing. I love a neutral palette in the home and in my wardrobe; it always feels chic.

You grew up in a small town near Houston—how did your background influence your journey into modelling and acting?

More than anything, my mom has been such a motivating factor for me. I grew up in a small town as an only child with an artist mother. We both love art and metaphysics, so I always wanted to be in a creative field. She never allowed negative self-talk and always helped me to believe that I could manifest anything I wanted.

You’ve been the face and spokesmodel for some of the biggest brands in the world—which partnership has been the most meaningful to you and why?

I’m really big on manifestation; growing up, I put all of the iconic Guess campaign photos around my bedroom. So, my Guess campaigns will always feel really special to me.

What was your reaction to seeing yourself on the covers and pages of magazines like GQ and Harpers Bazaar for the first time?

It’s the most rewarding feeling! It always feels so surreal to see a vision turn into reality.

Can you tell us about a particularly challenging moment in your career, and how you overcame it?

There was a time shortly after I moved to Los Angeles when I wasn’t working at all; I wasn’t even going on castings. My agents commonly told me that I was “too sexy and too curvy,” so they weren’t sending me out. I really started to doubt if I made the right choice moving to Los Angeles; it was really defeating. I went back to Texas for a few months and had a shift of perception. This might sound cheesy, but I started meditating and vision boarding, and it changed my life.

You’ve accomplished so much at a young age—what motivates you to keep pushing yourself and striving for success?

My family, I want to be able to provide for them.

Where is your favourite travel destination?

What is your favourite hotel?

It’s hard to say. Maybe Amanyara in Turks and Caicos or Plaza Athenee in Paris.

What ’s your go-to spa treatment? A deep tissue massage.

What are your go-to travel beauty products?

Coconut oil—I use it as my face wash, as a makeup remover and moisturiser while travelling—Murad Essential-C Moisture

Broad Spectrum SPF 30 as day cream (it’s the only one that doesn’t break me out) and three different lip liners, of course.

How do you adapt your beauty routine to different climates when travelling?

If I’m going to a beach location or somewhere humid, I won’t pack any hair tools; I’ll just rock it naturally. Same thing with mascara; I don’t wear mascara in humid locations. If I’m going to a city destination, I always overpack!

What’s in your carry-on?

Tiger Balm, lavender mist, AirPods, Vaseline lip balm, crystals, a Slip silk sleeping mask, ibuprofen, hand sanitizer and HotHands (A great hack for when the aeroplane is cold.)

How would you describe your travel style?

As comfortable as I can possibly get.

What are your favourite travel outfits or go-to pieces and brands that you always pack?

I usually travel in a giant hoodie and sweatpants. I rarely look cute on the aeroplane, but this brand called Bazilika has amazing cashmere sets. I just ordered a few pieces!

How do you stay comfortable during long flights while still looking stylish?

The key to looking chic while staying comfortable is to wear a neutral-coloured knit or cashmere set. That, paired with some clean sneakers, always looks put together and feels amazing. Do you have any tips or tricks for packing efficiently?

I have two packing lists on my phone, an international one and a domestic one. I’ve used these lists for years, so I always know that I’ll have everything I need. You can find a generic one on Google and then customise it to suit your own needs. Save it to your notes as a checklist and it’s a game changer.

What ’s your dream travel destination?

Bora Bora (currently manifesting)

From print work to promotional gigs and everything in between, Madison has made a name for herself as a successful model and influencer. Born in Orlando, Florida, she got her start in the industry at just 12 years old. After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her modelling career and has since worked for some of the biggest brands in the industry, including Guess and Anastasia Beverly Hills. Now, Madison has ventured into entrepreneurship with the launch of her swimwear brand, Kamari Swim. Here, Madison shares an inside of her journey in the industry, her love for travel and her passion for creating the ultimate beach wardrobe with Kamari Swim.

Congratulations on your new swimwear line! Tell us what inspired you to design and launch Kamari Swim.

I felt I could never find swimwear that I felt confident in. There was always something about the swimsuit that made me feel a little self-conscious, and there’s no worse feeling than that. I created Kamari to curate swimwear that hopefully makes women embody the confidence that I used to long for.

How do you balance your schedule between modelling and now being an entrepreneur? It balances out really well, thankfully. I usually model two to three days a week, so the days I am not working or shooting, I’m able to sit down at my computer and do new things for Kamari. A plus side to technology these days is that everything is in the palm of your hand, so it’s much easier for me to manage my company even while on set. I feel very lucky.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their own business?

There are two things. First, find something you’re passionate about and learn how to make money doing it. If someone else can do it, you can do it too. You can only work long hours and not get burned out by it if you truly love and believe in the service or product you are providing. Also, don’t give up. It’s a lot of trial and error, and you will come across bumps in the road, but in the end, it is so rewarding.

How do you set Kamri Swim apart from other swimwear lines?

We set ourselves apart from others with our styles and fun prints. Every swimsuit is funky, fun and bright all while being sexy and unique with styles. I also would say Kamari bikinis fit like no other with the best quality fabric. They are the most comfortable pieces I’ve ever owned, and I’m really proud of them. All while being good quality and long-lasting in chlorine and salt water.

What have been some of your biggest learning experiences in running a business?

There have been a lot of ups and downs, but mainly it’s all just teaching you for future success. The downs pivot you to where you and your business need to go. It’s also taught me to be patient in other aspects of my life. Good things take dedication, effort, time, work and grit. Nothing good happens overnight, so you have to be patient and trust in the process.

You’d be surprised, but I am not that big of a shopper. But when I do shop, I shop online and buy quality pieces I love and keep for a long period of time. Revolve has a little bit of everything. I also love FWRD and SSENSE when shopping for luxury labels. I also only buy sleepwear and robes from Meadow Moment. I don’t leave for a trip without my silk robe.

What is your travel style?

Comfort is key for travel attire. I do like to dress up when I’m on vacation and doing things, though. My favourite brand for travelling right now is Miaou.

Packing essentials?

Kamari Bikinis, JS Health Vitamins, a robe and a good book. That’s all you need.

What swimwear trend is a must this season?

A classic high waist one piece you can easily tan in. Classic, beautiful and sleek.

Your packing advice?

Well, I’m not sure if I have the best packing advice, but if I did have anything at the top of my list, it would be to pack light by bringing basics and planning outfits before you travel.

Skincare tips when travelling?

Water, vitamins and a great moisturiser with sunscreen. Let your skin breathe during the day.

What is your aeroport style?

Sweats or hoodies. Something I can easily sink into once on the plane. I’m loving Boys Lie sets right now.

How do you stay in shape on vacation?

If I’m travelling a lot, I do try to go to the gym and create some sort of routine; however, it can be really difficult when you’re living out of a suitcase and on vacation. I recently found Grace Albin, a Pilates and barre instructor on Instagram, who has so many videos of short and effective workouts. I did them four days a week while I was travelling in November, and they are a game changer. She shows you short workouts with little equipment that you can do anywhere.

Where is next on your travel bucket list?

I want to explore more of Italy next summer. I was lucky enough to visit Capri and attend the UNICEF gala this past year, but I’d love to see more of Italy and experience the culture, food, wine, hotels, restaurants, music and oceans.

Can you tell us about your background and how you got started in the health and fitness industry?

Growing up as an athlete I formed a natural interest in health and fitness. From an early age, I understood the importance of exercise and nutrition and the immediate benefits to my overall mood and energy levels.

I quickly developed a passion for helping others achieve their health and fitness goals. I began personal training at the age of 18 and studied exercise physiology in college. Later I earned my health coach and Pilates certifications to expand my education. Currently, I work full-time as an IT Healthcare Programmer and Project Manager as well as a Practice Director for my consulting firm, which has allowed me to self-fund my passion project LUXEFit.

What inspired you to start LUXEFit, and what sets it apart from other health and wellness companies? Health and fitness apps are abundant on the market, but LUXEFit is that all-in-one wellness app that has been lacking in the space. We encapsulate the true definition of a “luxury health retreat in your pocket.”

In my health coaching pursuit and life experience I quickly realised that most women are extremely conscious of the importance of health and fitness in our lives—but we are typically stressed, unsatisfied with our body image and let’s face it most of us feel like we’re running on empty!

We likely get our workouts in a few days a week or may even hire an expert coach. Some of us go a step further and prioritise a luxury health retreat or vacation, but we’re right back into our old habits and suffer from the return to home stress. Most women just aren’t feeling as good as they should every day, and I’ve discovered the solution without spending unnecessary time or money on health coaches and trainers.

I established LUXEFit as a lifestyle guide to set women up for success with our complete mind and body transformation programs and to raise awareness of the critical importance of daily mindfulness leading to untapped unconscious energy. We offer customised programs to get you rapid results and help you reach and maintain your goals. Our programs are easy to follow and require minimal time each day. Your mission is to help women find a lasting healthy relationship with their body image, exercise and diet trifecta. What advice do you have for women who struggle with these issues? Living a healthy lifestyle is within your reach. Instead of thinking “I’ll be happy when”, enjoying the process and embracing the present moment is critical while working towards your goals. Be kind to yourself, girls!

Finding a healthy balance can be challenging and complex and take patience, but these tips can help anyone improve their relationship with their body image, exercise routine and diet:

1. Prioritise your mental and physical health (as opposed to just your appearance). Put MORE emphasis on your mindset and lifestyle rather than fixating on what you see in the mirror.

2. Practice self-compassion and be kind and patient with yourself. Treat yourself with the kindness and compassion you show your most significant other.

3. Challenge any negative self-talk and replace these thoughts with positive affirmations and focus on your strengths and accomplishments.

4. We all stray, but getting back on track and finding consistency is the keystone to tapping your subconscious endless power.

As a lifestyle influencer, you have a significant following on social media. How do you use these platforms to promote healthy living, and what impact do you hope to have on your followers?

With stress, self-criticism and self-doubt at an all-time high in the world, I want to make a positive impact. I’m a huge advocate for self-care. We only get one body, so we need to treat it with love and kindness and do our best to enjoy each moment.

My mission is to help inspire as many people as possible to make healthy lifestyle shifts to improve their quality of life and self-confidence. We get so stuck in our ways as adults, especially with unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms, and I want to encourage a shift. Stress has been proven to cause disease in the body, and even a few small, positive daily improvements can create dramatic, lasting changes.

I want my followers to realise that each of us is in the driver’s seat of our life, and we have control of how we choose to look and feel (for the vast majority of us). Even as a health professional, it took me so long to realise that mindfulness work is even more important than the other components of living a healthy lifestyle. I want others to come to this realisation, as it’s life-changing. Lacking this awareness leads to an inability to manage stress, impacts your overall happiness and can cause your relationships or career to suffer. With just simple shifts in daily practice, you can improve your quality of life substantially.

Your first program, the “21-Day HEALTH RETREAT in your Pocket,” heavily emphasises mindfulness, nutrition, fitness and beauty. How did you choose these areas of focus, and what can participants expect from the program? Let’s face it—most people struggle with managing day-to-day stress regardless of how health-conscious they are. Our 21-day program is designed by leading health and fitness experts to help you better manage stress while looking and feeling your absolute best. What common misconceptions about health and wellness would you like to correct?

You do not need to do incredibly intense and lengthy workouts to reap results. This is why I promote express 20-minute workouts on the LUXEFit app. Also, if an exercise doesn’t feel good on your body, you probably shouldn’t be doing it. I have even stopped running on treadmills altogether. We should push past our comfort zone for growth, but not at the risk of injuring ourselves.

Sugar is extremely addictive, and for those who are attempting to cut out sugar in your diet, make sure to read all nutrition labels since they hide sugar in more foods than you can imagine. The best way to determine how your insulin levels respond to certain foods is to try wearing a glucose monitor for a month or so. Blood sugar and nutrition monitors such as LEVELS are becoming trendy in the fitness community. The monitors show you the direct impact that food has on your health. They are essentially the new Apple Watch for health and fitness aficionados.

I think many people lack awareness of the importance of gut ealth which has a direct impact on how you look and feel. Oftentimes common bloating, fatigue and brain fog can be caused by unbalanced gut health, and this can easily be improved by adding in gut-healthy foods, such as kimchi, bone broth, celery juice, low-sugar kefir and kombucha, etc.) or by incorporating LUXEFit’s fasting bone broth protocol.

Low-fat versions of foods usually have additional unhealthy additives in them, so I typically opt for full-fat versions of foods. Also, I still see many people ordering egg white omelettes. The yolks of eggs contain more essential nutrients than egg whites, so it’s healthier to eat whole eggs. You just need to account for the additional calories.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a health and fitness expert and entrepreneur, and how do you overcome them?

My biggest challenge as an entrepreneur has been self-funding my luxury company with a lack of any financial assistance to date. I’ve had to make adjustments to find a healthy balance with the extremely long hours I work. I have made some significant sacrifices to pursue my dream. The health and fitness industry is an oversaturated and constantly emerging market so staying on top of the industry trends and finding your niche is imperative.

What’s next for LUXEFit, and how do you plan to continue innovating in the health and wellness industry?

With my programming, healthcare and technology background, I embrace emerging technologies. I’ve been anxious to finalise a custom algorithm to personalise mind and body transformation programs for an individualised approach based on the data of each report.

Preventative care is also incredibly important and often overlooked, so I’d like to draw more attention to this. I’m also excited to collaborate with other leading health and fitness businesses to innovate new products and services and also continue developing LUXEFit branded products.

Finally, what advice do you have for people who are just starting their health and wellness journey?

Enjoy the journey! Begin making small shifts in your lifestyle habits and identify what brings you joy with the process. For example, if you feel connected with nature, then bring your meditation and exercise outdoors. Find types of exercise you enjoy and that feel good for your body.

I also recommend setting realistic goals that are achievable and sustainable and stopping fixating on the number on the scale.

Identify healthier ways to cook the same foods you already love by diving into new recipes. You can even make healthy mac and cheese, pizza and decadent desserts, all guilt-free, from the comfort of your own kitchen. There’s an abundance of healthy recipes to choose from. Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein and always ensure you’re getting ample water intake. If you’re thirsty, that’s a sign you’re already dehydrated.

Lastly, sleep is critical for optimal health. Aim for seven to eight hours to help your body repair and regenerate and take rest days after super intense workouts to let the body recover. Rest is incredibly important and must be prioritised.

How have your personal travel experiences influenced your approach to health and wellness, and how have you incorporated those experiences into LUXEFit’s philosophy? I’m someone who loves to indulge in health- and fitness-focused travel destinations. I’ve experienced several retreats, programs,\ and incredible stays at the most luxurious destinations. The only pitfall with a lot of these incredible experiences is that once you return home, life begins to feel just as chaotic once you’re back in your real life daily living, with work and responsibilities. I designed LUXEFit with the fundamental principle that you can bring the retreat experience to your own home to learn how to realistically accomplish sustainable results.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face when it comes to staying healthy and active during travel, and how do you overcome them?

For many years, my weakest self-discipline moments were at restaurants on airport layovers or during a flight, but it definitely started to take its toll on me, so I made some adjustments. If I have a full day of travel with layovers, I now prioritise walking around the airport and putting some headphones in. I’ve also started locating spas in some of the larger airports and have enjoyed a quick massage over a cocktail during my layover and realise how much better I feel with these decisions. Some movement is better than no movement at all!

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to maintain their wellness routine while travelling but doesn’t know where to start?

Begin by prioritising the basics of wellness, like staying hydrated, eating unprocessed foods, getting ample sleep, exercising regularly and limiting alcohol intake (which typically tends to spike when people travel). I recommend packing smart and bringing workout clothes and shoes and healthy snacks to help you stay on track on the road. If you remember to prioritise your wellness while travelling (such as meditation, yoga, taking baths and other self-care activities), it will help you manage the additional stress that travel takes on your mind and body.

Can you share any unique wellness experiences that you’ve had while travelling that have stayed with you over time?

After a private Pilates at the iconic Sirenuse Hotel in Positano, I tried contrast therapy for enhanced recovery. Rotating between the sauna and full-body cold plunge was so invigorating and helped me the next day. I now try and incorporate it into my post-workout routine, even if all I have access to is a cold shower.

Finally, what’s next for LUXEFit when it comes to travel wellness, and how do you plan to continue innovating in this area?

Awareness is key to achieving optimal health. As digital health tools advance, we can better track and manage our fitness and wellness habits while on the go. I’m fully immersed in cutting-edge technology and excited to partake in the innovation of these mindblowing product capabilities. Lihou Island, Guernsey

Lihou is a tidal island situated off the west coast of Guernsey and only accessible via a quarter-mile causeway at low tide.
