WHAT INSPIRED THIS ISSUE’S BEACH SHOOT?

Hi I’m Troy Jensen

Retreat Magazine’s Beauty Editor

FROM THE BEAUTY EDITOR

One of the best things about beach chic is a gorgeous sun-kissed complexion with a healthy glow. Shot in Venice and Malibu, California, my stylist Naz and I wanted to create a story on the beach that didn’t necessarily mean all about swimwear but to create a style that is effortless, cool and a bit incomplete. Like bikini bottoms with just an amazing leather jacket or gorgeous dresses so sheer you can see right through them, and sexy little denim cutoff‘s with fun patches. HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE HER BEACHY GLAM?

Hair: I applied a surf spray to my model Caitlyn’s hair and set her hair in a loose braid. When we got to the first location, I let down her braid. Caitlyn was amazing! As the day went on she just looked more and more gorgeous till sundown.

Makeup: The makeup was quick and simple. I gave her face and body an all-over healthy glow. I used a bit of bronzer on the eyes, all over the face and the apples of the cheeks. I then defined Caitlyn’s brows, smudged a chocolate eyeliner along the upper lash line and curled and coated her lashes with some waterproof black mascara. I finished the look with a matte nude lip. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR DISCO SHOOT?

My stylist Naz styled to show skin and the body

This story “ My Own Private Disco” came about during the COVID 19 quarantine and how music, especially uplifting disco, can get me through some sad and difficult times. Like the expression goes “dance like no one’s watching!”, that is exactly what I, and so many others, did during this global pandemic to keep our spirits up. Virtual DJ sessions on Instagram replaced Saturday night clubbing. All my favourite top DJ’s like DJ YO-C, Mr Kitty and Pop Queen Kylie Minogue dropped fun, dance-around-thehouse tracks and gave me a virtual discotheque experience reminiscent of Studio 54 right in my living room. When I wasn’t dancing to Kylie’s new album, I was watching all my favourite movies and Netflix shows. I watched a couple of super chic movies from the 1970s like LIPSTICK and THE EYES OF LAURA MARS. They feature real-life fashion models, photographers as well as top hair and makeup artists of that decade. I was inspired by the photoshoot scenes in these movies with ultra glamorous makeup and hair, and I thought it could be cool to create a shoot where the discotheque or the red carpet event was right in my backyard. And the whole shoot was actually shot in my backyard and neighbourhood. The fabulous glam-squad consisted of myself on makeup and behind the camera, the stylist Patrick Aufdencamp and the hairstylist Frederic Aspiras. Talk about an awesome team!

Con tribu tors Director of Public Relations How are you staying creative and inspired? I am blessed that my work with Retreat Magazine has allowed me to keep the creative juices flowing. From the creative direction on shoots to working with the editorial team on stories, it’s been a blessing. Personally, I decided to leave Los Angeles and call Miami home which has brought me closer to my darling Chimpanzee Limbani and my new chosen family in Miami. My little dog and I have never been more inspired and looking towards a bright future. When you can travel next, where will you be heading first? I’ve been travelling for work during the pandemic and look forward to a welldeserved vacation in Hawaii in 2021.

How are you staying creative and inspired?

I make sure to work with a diverse range of clients and as many different genres of projects as possible.

I keep myself healthy as possible, I walk, hike, listen to music, watching documentaries, appreciate art. Being in nature keeps me creative and inspired.

My biggest priority in life is growing my brand into a household name. How are you taking care of yourself? Staying healthy and productive, while not allowing outside influences to determine any fear or anxiety in ou current climate.

Videographer

Bryan Wyatt founded Smooth Cut Productions in 2013 and has since been dedicated to expanding the brand into as many different genres of pre and post-production as possible while obtaining hands-on experience as a freelance videographer/video editor for various media outlets.

What is the biggest priority in your life right now? I guess health is everyone’s biggest priority - keeping our mind and heart alive. How are you taking care of yourself? I go for walks, eat healthily and meditate to clear the mind. I exercise just to keep the adrenaline up.

BAILEE EDGINGTON Stylist

Bailee Edgington is a represented fashion stylist based in Los Angeles, specializing in fashion editorials and commercial costume design. How are you staying creative and inspired?

FILBERT KUNG

I’m always looking to get inspired, as of lately I am keeping up on WWD. I’m also a huge lover of Pinterest, I’m always creating new inspiring boards whether it is for my cooking or love for fashion. I’m also a little old school with creating vision boards. It reminds me of when I was in Fashion school. I recently started one with cutouts from my old magazine collections. I have also been cooking A LOT, which is my other passion. How are you taking care of yourself? Working out every day and taking time to reflect on my career and how I can progress.

LAUREN SCHULZ Photographer

How are you staying creative and inspired? As lockdown continues in Melbourne for the 6th month, we have no work or friends or travel so my creative streak is running a tad low but I have been loving making mood boards for future shoots and getting outside as much as possible. How are you taking care of yourself? I’ve been having celery juice every morning to kick start my digestion. Playing solo tennis with my backyard wall and boxing with my brother for our 1 hour limit of outside time. Keeping off the computer as much as possible and staying active as much as I can!

How are you taking care of yourself? I am taking care of myself by non-stop online shopping for beauty products and healthy overpriced keto snacks. When you can travel next, where will you be heading first?

EMILY ABAY

Greece to see my family. This photo is of me on the island of Sifnos. I wish I was there right now!

Fashion Photographer

Creative inspiration can come from anywhere really. I would say the majority of my inspiration does come from Instagram but also draw a lot of inspiration from the locations I stumble onto. I’ll see something like some driftwood on the beach and transport my mind into hallucinations of the potential of what I could create there.

Melbourne!! I’m desperate to see my family, but for pleasure? I’d love to go back to Bali for some good surf and warm sun, and then Italy for some of that beautiful Mediterranean Sea. I miss travel, but it’s really been such an incredible time to check in with myself and re-evaluate what is most important to me. I’ve lived such an amazing colourful life so far and I’m grateful for all the experiences. It’s been quite a journey and I can’t wait to go on that next adventure.

Staying focused, determined and motivated to attain my goals and dreams. How are you taking care of yourself? I stay true to my daily routines and focus on staying safe and healthy When you can travel next, where will you be heading first? I would love to go somewhere in the Caribbean again! It’s so beautiful and relaxing.

How are you staying creative and inspired?

When you can travel next, where will you be heading first?

What is the biggest priority in your life right now?

KIMBERLY RANDALL Art Director

How are you staying creative and inspired? It’s easy to stay creative when my whole life revolves around art and design! Aside from painting and design projects, I am always doing something creative like filming, photography, and music composition. To stay inspired, I rely on digital platforms like Instagram and Pinterest to keep up with all of my favourite artists! Getting outside can also be a miracle-cure for a creative block. What is the biggest priority in your life right now? Progress! In everything I do. If I’m not working towards or planning something I start to feel stagnant.

DANIELLE CHRYSOHOIDIS

DR KATE JAMESON

Cosmetic Physician and the Medical Director of Youth Lab How are you staying creative and inspired? Having just returned to work part-time after maternity leave I am finally feeling my creative juices flowing. Running a business always keeps me inspired and motivated but my fiance and I have used the lockdown period and our time in our baby bubble to brainstorm and plan for the future of our business. We have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline which is keeping me on my toes. Life with a newborn baby is always a course of inspiration though too so I have to mention my beautiful boy Edison for inspiring me every day.

Makeup Artist

Fulltime makeup artist, Danielle lives in Los Angeles.

When you can travel next, where will you be heading first?

How are you staying creative and inspired? I am currently staying creative and inspired by reading magazines and keeping busy with work.

MELINA FEDELE

What is the biggest priority in your life right now?

How are you staying creative and inspired?

I’m coffee obsessed right now! In my downtime, I’m doing digital Illustrations.

I tend to approach everything with a creative lens but I do love following creators on youtube and Instagram.

Social Media Assistant

We will have to head back to our family in the UK as soon as the borders open. My son has not met his Nan or his cousin so we hope to get over there and stay with the family. I won’t say no to a sneaky tropical getaway though, first stop will probably be Lombok or Bali for a cheap and cheerful family getaway.

PONY UP H O W TO C R E AT E P I C T U R E - P E R F E C T P O N Y TA I L S Written by Aaron Royce Photographed by Irvin Rivera

Ponytails are one of the best-ever hairstyles and for good reason! Throw on a hair elastic, and you’ve got a style that’s easy and fast—and looks instantly polished if you don’t have time for more elaborate looks. However, now that re-openings are imminent and we’ve gotten the hang of looking Zoom-ready, it’s time to elevate that humble pony to a sharper style. Plus, if you want to make your ponytail more fashionable and personalized, there are easy tips and tricks to elevate your hair (which you likely have in your home or carry-on already!). Whether you’re video chatting or on a socially-distanced dinner date, these are the best ways to make a simple style look refreshed and fabulous.

22 | RETREATMAG.COM

SILK TIE

WHITE THE BUNNY, silk hair tie set, $45

A hair elastic works in a pinch, but elevating your ties is the easiest way to elevate your ponytail! A silken hair tie from White the Bunny’s complimentary sets will make your pony look primped and polished for anything (and how cute are those colours?). To heighten your hair’s volume, add some sea salt spray by Salty Dog from Evo before tying it up. It’ll create smooth curls and enhance your natural waves for a totally beach-worthy look.

SCARF

SALTY DOG, salt spray, $11

VERSACE, printed silk-twill scarf, $195

Craving European-girl style? Tie your ponytail with a scarf! A silk-blend like Versace’s latest will keep your hair secure with a light Ponyhold while adding a dose of colour and playfulness. Run some of Kérastase’s nourishing oil through your hair before creating your ponytail. Your locks will feel nourished and have a healthy shine, which perfectly pairs with a scarf for an utterly darling look.

REDKEN, Shine Flash spray, $38

NECKLACE

LAURA LOMBARDI, gold-plated necklace, $140

This style is more unusual, but just as fun! Repurpose a favourite necklace by winding it around your ponytail. We recommend a versatile piece with a medium-thick chain that makes a statement but can easily unwind, like Laura Lombardi’s chunky styles. While tying up your pony, loop the chain through your hair elastic, then wind it around until it’s fully covered; instant glamour awaits! For an added statement, spray on Redken’s Shine Flash to give your hair a striking, glossy finish.

CLIPS Hair clips are back and better than ever. Add them to your next ponytail look for a bold statement! Work some of Oribe’s cult-favourite créme through your hair to give your locks a slick look and strong hold. After tying your ponytail, add some embellished clips to the top part for a fun and pretty accessorizing moment. Cult Gaia’s acrylic and crystal-adorned styles are perfect for creating a look that’s contemporary and enchanting.

KêRASTASE Huile Sublime hair oil, $59

ORIBE, Créme for Style, $42

CULT GAIA, acrylic hair clips, $150

Brow Business Brow Lamination, the microblading alternative taking Instagram, is the must-have treatment of 2020. To find out mo e, we spoke to Rachel Lavelle, one of Australia’s most sought after cosmetic educators, for an inside on the hottest innovative technique.

PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHELLI WRIGHT

WHAT IS BROW LAMINATION? Eyebrow lamination is the next big thing in cosmetic treatments. It is essentially a chemical straightening of the brows which results in full, beachy, fluffy brows, with gorgeous natural definition. Already a beauty treatment staple in many European countries, Australian women are now seeking these same great results. WHAT HAPPENS DURING BROW LAMINATION?

brow lamination

Brow lamination is a two-stage process whereby an eyebrow lift cream is first applied. This cream contains a specific form of plant keratin, developed to protect and nourish the delicate hairs of the eyebrows. The first stage of the treatment softens the hairs and allows for a reengineering of the direction of growth, by a skilled therapist, who can manoeuvrer your now pliable hairs into sculptured, feathery perfection. The second stage of treatment involves setting your now perfectly aligned brows into place with a neutralising nourishing cream, which rejuvenates and hydrates the hair shaft. This nourishing cream will be applied and left for a few minutes, to ensure your brows are revitalised and your new brow shape is locked in. To achieve impressive results following the brow lamination, Rachel will shape your brows to perfection with a wax and trim. She also highly recommends incorporating an eyebrow tint into the treatment. With your flawlessly set eyebrows now perfectly framing your face, you may also wish to complete your showstopping look with an eyelash lift. HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE FOR A BROW LAMINATION TREATMENT? Ideally, brows should be grown out for three, to four weeks before the treatment to achieve the best results. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO POST-BROW LAMINATION TREATMENT? To preserve your gorgeous newly shaped brows, you must avoid getting your brows wet for the first 24 hours post-treatment. You should avoid hot showers, exercise and other steamy scenarios such as saunas. During this initial 24 hours, your brows will appear silky and dewy. After 24 hours, you can continue your routine as per normal and use products on your face as you normally would. After the initial cleanse of your face posttreatment, your brows will appear full, beachy and fluffy. Rachel recommends using The Brow Edit at home Keratin Infusion Brow growth serum to keep your brows nourished, this incredible serum also promotes hair growth. You can shop our brow serum at www.rachellavelle.com.au HOW LONG DOES BROW LAMINATION LAST? Brow Lamination will see your brows remaining in their newly sculptured position and looking beachy and fluffy for up to eight weeks.

WHO SHOULD GET BROW LAMINATION? Eyebrow lamination is a treatment many can benefit from. Particularly those who are seeking to create symmetry, especially when it comes to undisciplined brows that have hairs that resist growing in the same direction. Those with curly hair and those wanting to reposition hairs to fill gaps will find this treatment a game-changer. This treatment is not recommended for people with minimal hair. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OF BROW LAMINATION? Brow Lamination tends to be low risk for side effects. However, as you are applying a treatment to the sensitive area that is your eye, it is essential that you are receiving your treatment from a well-trained therapist. Whilst uncommon, eczema may occur in rare cases, as a result of the ingredients in the products used. Once converted to brow lamination addicted status, Rachel encourages her clients to nourish their hair with our Keratin-infused Brow Growth Serum which supports the integrity of your hair bonds to stay strong and stimulates brow growth. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Brow lamination, including brow styling and tint to complete your look, is $110. Brow lamination as a standalone treatment is $80.00 ABOUT RACHEL LAVELLE Rachel Lavelle is passionate about both brow and lash artistry, and aside from being a nationally acclaimed, international educator, Rachel is an experienced cosmetic tattoo artist and dermal aesthetician. TIGHTEN Up Say goodbye to sagging skin! Technology and skincare have collided more than ever before and Dr. Kate Jameson, Cosmetic Physician and the Medical Director of Youth Lab, Australia’s premier medical aesthetics clinic, has everything you need to know about skin tightening.

29 | RETREATMAG.COM

Skin damaged by the environment appears course, roughened and is deeply wrinkled with a loss of elasticity and recoil, making the skin appear “saggy.” Skin sagging generally becomes more apparent as the effects of environmental and lifestyle changes appear, usually in the 40-50s, especially for women. These environmental factors can worsen and accelerate wrinkling and sagging of the skin. WHAT TREATMENTS WORK BEST FOR NECK AND JOWLS? The area that bothers most people when their skin begins to lose elasticity and start to sag is the lower face (and jowls) as well as the neck.

COSMEDIX, Illuminate and Lift, $115

PCA, Perfecting Neck & Décolleté, $135 COSMEDIX, Affirm Antioxidant Firming Serum, $125

WHAT CAUSES SAGGING SKIN? One of the hallmark signs of ageing skin is a loss of skin elasticity and laxity which presents to many as “sagging skin”. With age, the skin itself changes with a loss of collagen and support as well as a loss of elastin. Elastin provides the skin with the ability to stretch and snap back into position when elastin is lost the skin becomes loose and slack and is unable to maintain its structure and position. This can all result in skin that is thinner, looser and sagging. Although many of these changes eventually occur in everyone, the changes to skin quality, especially the quality and amount of elastin and collagen, are significantly affected by the environment. Factors such as long term UV exposure and smoking are the main culprits. Other causes include air pollution, poor nutrition, and rapid, extensive weight loss (and also weight fluctuations over time). One of the major causes of skin sagging, smoking, causes a loss of elastin and collagen by the production of free radicals. This is when once-healthy oxygen molecules become overactive and unstable. Free radicals damage cells, leading to, among other things, premature wrinkles and sagging.

The majority of the treatments that work best for this area utilise methods of inducing collagen and elastin production by triggering a cascade of events within the skin that stimulates cell formation through controlled inflammation and wound response. With increased production of collagen and elastin comes skin that thickens and becomes firmer, reducing the appearance of sagging jowls and neck bands. With these treatments results are subtle and cumulative,

IT CAN TAKE MANY MONTHS FOR COLLAGEN STIMULATION TO BECOME EVIDENT BUT LONG TERM RESULTS ARE IMPRESSIVE AND WILL CONTINUE TO IMPROVE. Radio Frequency is a popular method which works to deliver heat energy into the skin to remove damaged collagen and stimulate a wound response in the skin, which over time then produces a skin tightening effect that peaks over a 3 to 6 month period. Radiofrequency Skin tightening synthesizes new collagen to thicken and add extra support to the skin. There are multiple options available such as older monopolar radiofrequency treatments such as Thermage and Pelleve and newer bipolar Radiofrequency treatments which often combine micro-needling to further enhance the effects such as the Intensif and Infini. A series of these treatments is always recommended, often 4-6 weeks apart with results evident even at 12 months. Treatment is generally comfortable with minimal downtime. Ultrasound is gaining popularity as a skin tightening treatment with treatments such as Ultherapy and Ulthera. Ultrasound works by delivering intensely focused ultrasound energy into the skin as thermal energy to the deep dermis and subcutaneous layers. As with radiofrequency, zones of heat are produced within the highly focused beam from the absorption of the energy into the tissue. Ultrasound has the benefit of penetrating very deep and can result in the deep tightening of the SMAS layers of the face, giving a lifting effect. Almost like a non-surgical lower facelift to the jowls in some people.

THE BEST TREATMENT IS PREVENTION. ALWAYS AVOID RAPID WEIGHT CHANGES WITH REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND A HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET.

WHAT TREATMENT IS BEST FOR TIGHTENING YOUR FACE AFTER WEIGHT LOSS? One of the main contributing factors to sagging skin is rapid weight loss or fluctuating weight over time. With weight loss, the fat pads in the face start to atrophy (that is they become smaller) which means there is less support for the skin which overlies it. Combined with the ageing process where fat in the face is lost naturally, weight loss can compound the effects and result in a gaunt appearance with sagging skin overlying. The best treatment is prevention and to always avoid rapid weight changes and maintain a healthy weight with regular physical activity and a healthy, balanced diet. For those who feel their skin has thinned and is sagging following a period of weight loss, there are non-surgical options. The key with treatment is replacing the lost volume and restoring the natural facial contours to support the skin. One of the best treatment options for this is Collagen Stimulating or Bio-stimulating dermal fillers. These products are injected into the deeper layers of the skin and work over 3 months to stimulate collagen to both revolumise the tissue and thicken the skin to reduce sagging. These fillers give a natural result without looking “overfilled” and essentially restore what was once there. Laser is another popular non-surgical option for skin tightening of the face. Laser uses directed laser energy

to result in coagulation and ablation of the tissues which again, stimulates a controlled wound response and the production of new, healthy collagen. The more heat that is delivered precisely into the skin, the more of a tightening effect will be evident. Ablative lasers such as CO2 and Erbium are generally more effective for skin tightening as they ablate the epidermis causing a contraction of the tissues but they are associated with higher risk and downtime than non-ablative lasers. Regular laser treatments, when performed in skilled hands, can be an excellent maintenance and preventative option to ensure healthy collagen and elastin within the skin. Other popular treatment options to prevent skin sagging and improve facial skin following weight loss include microneedling which uses physical needles to stimulate a controlled wound response in the skin, again working to stimulate collagen. Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is another option which works as a natural treatment, utilising the body’s own plasma to regenerate the skin and repair damaged collagen and elastin fibres. Overall these treatments can work to maintain and restore the integrity of the skin following weight changes, as well as prevent further changes over time. Unfortunately, dermal fillers and non-surgical skin treatments can not be used to “lift” the skin per se and those who have significant facial sagging will need a surgical facelift.

31 | RETREATMAG.COM

WHAT PREVENTATIVE TREATMENTS WORK WELL TO COMBAT SAGGING SKIN FROM AGING? A Thread Lift is a non-surgical facelift using fine sutures to lift and volumize the face and neck without the downtime and invasiveness of a surgical procedure. It is also a suitable alternative to those who do not wish to have cosmetic injectables. In a Thread Lift, small anchoring sutures are inserted in specifically determined areas of the face and are then used to elevate and lift the sagging areas providing immediate results. Rejuvenating threads are also used to improve the condition of the skin and treat superficial imperfections such as textural irregularities and fine lines. As we age we lose facial volume through bone resorption, muscle atrophy, fat loss and redistribution resulting in noticeable changes in the overlying skin with sagging, loss of skin tone and contour irregularities. Combined with the gradual loss of collagen and elastin, the skin becomes looser and begins to sag which further contributes to a tired and aging face.

WHAT PREVENTATIVE TREATMENTS WORK WELL TO COMBAT SAGGING SKIN FROM AGING? The primary prevention method to combat skin sagging from ageing is to avoid exposure to UV radiation. Prevention is better than cure. Preventative strategies include the daily use of a broad spectrum SPF 50, the use of protective measures such as a hat as well as avoidance of the sun in peak times and using shade as much as possible. It goes without saying that sun tanning and the use of sunbeds should be avoided. Smoking is another contributor and smoking cessation and avoidance of passive smoking is essential to maintain healthy skin and prevent further free radical damage. The avoidance of air pollution is important and this can vary significantly depending on where in the world you live. Using antioxidants in skincare is especially helpful to protect the skin from damaging free radicals. Antioxidants such as vitamin C (or L-Ascorbic Acid) are essential for collagen synthesis and are a powerful antioxidant for free radical scavenging, protecting from the effects of UV radiation and environmental stressors. As a result, antioxidants can be used as a preventative method for skin sagging due to the impact oxidative stress has on elastin and collagen within the skin. Other preventative strategies to prevent skin sagging in healthy skin include maintaining a healthy diet filled with healthy fats and protein, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight (eg no rapid weight fluctuations or rapid weight loss). Hormonal treatments may also come in to play especially for women as early menopause can contribute to a loss of collagen. The use of topical at-home skincare and in-clinic treatments can also be utilised while the skin is still healthy, to avoid sagging and maintain skin integrity and firmness. Using in-clinic treatments regularly such as skin needling, laser resurfacing, radiofrequency and the appropriate use of injectables will maintain the skin quality and prevent significant sagging.

Thread lifts can target these changes by providing structural support and lift through the biodegradable sutures which are long-lasting with a slow breakdown rate in the skin. Threads also actively work to stimulate collagen production which, over time, works to increase the volume and restore the shape of the face naturally. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF THREADS AVAILABLE? There are multiple types of threads available for Doctors to use however these all use a fine synthetic material which is designed to dissolve over time. These materials all have a long history of safe and reliable use in medicine and surgery such as in sutures to close wounds. This material will dissolve over time and is eliminated from the body. The types of threads can be classified as lifting or rejuvenating threads. Lifting threads work to treat mild to moderate skin laxity by providing mechanical support and physically lifting sagging tissues. Rejuvenating threads (called Mono threads) work to rejuvenate the skin by tightening and reconditioning. They can work to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin texture by stimulating collagen. HOW DO I KNOW WHICH TYPE IS BEST FOR ME? Threads now offer a non-surgical alternative to injectables which have the potential to improve the condition of the skin and treat skin laxity. The treatment objective depends on the type of thread being used. Those who need a full facial treatment offering contouring, lifting of the lower face and reducing jowls as well as improving the appearance of a sagging neck will benefit from lifting threads. Rejuvenating threads offer a more subtle result and can be used to stimulate collagen and reduce the appearance of fine lines like lip lines as well as offering generalised skin tightening and reconditioning across the entire face A good candidate for a thread lift has healthy skin and is a non-smoker. Those with significant skin sagging and thin, lax skin will not be a suitable candidate for a thread lift and may need surgical treatment.

Whether you want to feel healthier, stronger, happier, or sexier, The Pilates Class Method is for you! Founded by professional dancer, Jacqui Kingswell, who once worked alongside international artists such as Beyonce, One Direction and Ricky Martin, The Pilates Class offers a library of Pilates Classes including barre, cardio & more! With new classes published weekly, pre and postnatal essential classes, men’s stretch and classes available at beginner, intermediate, and experienced level options, Jacqui’s mission is to offer transformative practices that you can do for your body and helps you to create sustainable and lasting change. Tell us about you! How long have you been doing Pilates? How did you get started? I started dance at age 3 and eventually spent 9 years of my professional career touring the world as a professional dancer. I began Pilates at the age of 12. My ballet teacher at the time, introduced Pilates to our performing arts school to help enhance our performance and ability as dancers. It completely transformed my strength, control and connection to my body and mind and was something I always practise on a day to day basis as part of my dance training. It was a practice that completely changed my alignment, performance and mental state. It was also a practice that was sustainable, kind and served my body and mind. It completely changed my life and I wanted to share my experience and knowledge with others- after 9 years travelling as a professional dancer, I stopped touring and started teaching pilates and haven’t looked back since! What is The Pilates Class? The Pilates Class in an online, technique focused, Pilates Studio that can be used anywhere in the world. I created the platform because I wanted to take a unique approach to what an online class can mean to someone. Whether you are a mum with little time to work out, an entrepreneur or

a business professional or just someone passionate about health and wellness, I want you to feel welcome on the platform and like there is something for you. We offer Pilates, Barre, Cardio, Stretch, Strength, Pre-natal, Postnatal, Men’s and Mindfulness classes. No matter where you are, what time it is or what your mood you’re in you can log onto the platform and do a class that brings you back to your mind and body. Why did you decide to launch it? I first launched Th Pilates Class during the pandemic. Having access to classes in the comfort of your own home was something I felt was needed more than ever. The Pilates Class focuses on the connection between the mind and the body whilst enjoying every part of the movement. It’s a practice that your body craves and one that you can do for the rest of your life. How is Pilates Class different from others? Being a professional dancer for 9 years and starting my dance practice at the age of 3, I’ve been taught by the most inspiring mentors and teachers from all around the world. The Pilates Class is a combination of techniques and methods that I’ve learned over the years. The Pilates Class focusses on technique and understanding the body and its function not just within the class but on a day to day basis. I give the members corrections and cues throughout the classes so they feel as if I’m in the room with them. What are the benefits of Pilates? There are so many incredible benefits of Pilates. It releases stress tension in both your body and mind. It teachers you control, precision and balance. It increases strength, flexibility, posture and awareness of the mind and body. Once you feel the physical change that pilates brings to your body it’s hard to go back. Pilates is one of the most transformative practices that you can do for your body and helps you to create sustainable and lasting change.

37 | RETREATMAG.COM

How often should you practice Pilates? The most important thing The Pilates Class teaches you is how to listen to your body. Every’’ body’’ is different and every day is different. There’s really not one answer for everyone. The weeks I have more energy I go for a more intense class and the days I need to feel more grounded I choose a restorative class. Overall I move my body every single day and I recommend my members to take at least 3 Pilates Classes per week as a minimum. What type of equipment do you need for The Pilates Class? One of the best things about the Pilates Class is there’s no equipment needed, just a mat! The classes are designed to use resistance from your body weight. What type of memberships do you offer? We offer monthly and annual memberships, but we also offer a FREE 7-day trial so members can see if The Pilates Class is the right for them. Can you practice Pilates during pregnancy? Yes, definitely! Being pregnant is such a special time for women and moving through your pregnancy is wonderful. Some modifications need to be taken during pregnancy but we have specific prenatal classes for our pregnant women on the platform and do our best to guide them through this time. Who will benefit from The Pilates Class? Every single person! If you’ve ever been to a physiotherapist or doctor with an injury, they will always tell you to start practising pilates when you’re ready for recovery! It’s such a safe and beautiful practice that you can do for the rest of your life. It truly is something that once you’ve discovered it will change your relationship with your body and mind. Anyone that does Pilates will tell you the same thing.

The Meditation Revolution Changing the way we see the world through the power of digital well being

This year, travel has changed for many of us. We have spent more time at home than ever before, sometimes scrolling through our Instagram travel feed, eating ice cream on the couch and wondering when it will all go back to normal again. But being homebound doesn’t mean that we can’t still get that retreat experience and personal growth from the comfort of our lounge chair. No one knows this better than Sarah Rollins, Director of Meditation at Samyama Life, an online retreat center for Meditation and Mindful Living. We spoke to Sarah to understand how to cultivate the calm, clarity and perspective that most of us get by traveling, from the couch instead. “I love retreats! I have hosted in Bali many times and understand the blissful saturation that comes with a fresh, beautiful environment and deep relaxation. I originally developed Samyama Life’s beautiful meditation Journeys for hotels to offer their guests to use whilst on vacation so that they could have the benefits of a meditation retreat from any hotel. But the demand for this retreat experience from home has been huge due to C19. Interestingly, what I am seeing in my guests now is that they are building so much resilience, strength and acceptance into their character by home-based retreating. They may not be escaping to an exotic location, but they are showing up in a way that is having a profound and lasting impact on the quality of their daily lives. It is so inspiring to see them shift from feeling scattered, exhausted, unable to get to sleep and putting themselves last, to feeling in control of what they give to the world and themselves – it’s very empowering! At Samyama Life we tailor everything around creating calm, clarity and confidence through meditation and mindful living. This comes as a surprise to many who think that meditation is only for clearing your mind or thinking about nothing. We can create very specific impacts on our lives through the right practices, and learn how to forgive, how to let go, how to feel love, how to break negative habits and so much more. And this is not just for yogis and hippies, you will find everyone from CEOs to school teachers doing this as basic self-care. It’s honestly as necessary to modern life as brushing your teeth is. I am going out on a limb here and going to say MEDITATION IS DOWNRIGHT SEXY!”

R E T R E AT: How can we stay fresh and feeling inspired at home? SA R A H: That’s a question that I get asked a lot at the moment! Firstly, acknowledging that it is a challenging time and many of us have experienced disruption to our daily life. What tends to happen when we impact the momentum of our lives, is that our ‘stuff’ floats up to the surface. Kind of like a river being dammed, you would see the contents of that river start to pool. This can bring up all sorts of things that we have not felt before or just been unaware of in the flow of our daily life. So when we are challenged like this, we need to use tools and techniques which we may not have in our well-being toolkit - and of course, I am going to name meditation and mindfulness practices as invaluable! We need to acknowledge things have changed, then take time to notice what comes up because of the change, and make the adjustments to your routine that will help you today - rather than sticking to the routines you did yesterday. When we zoom out on the context of our lives and look at the macro rather than micro, it can help us have patience and acceptance for the here and now. Things will normalise over time, and it is a helpful perspective to be reminded of - you can stay healthy and feeling fresh, just the how you do it might look a little different for the next few months. That’s ok too! R E T R E AT: Can you talk a little more to meditation and mindfulness, how do those practices help? SA R A H: Referring back to the river analogy from the previous question, when we meditate, we purposefully disrupt the momentum of our lives and we deal with what comes up daily rather than letting it go unnoticed. If we follow a methodical process, as we work through our ‘stuff’, our self-knowledge, clarity, psychological flexibility and acceptance ... which makes life much easier! I work with so many people who are exhausted, often boarding on burned out and have a history of putting themselves last, in fact, I used to be one of them! But with the right meditation and mindfulness techniques, we can realign our priorities with who we are, prioritise our wellbeing and cultivate calm, clarity and confidence in our daily life. It’s just about knowing how to do it. It is very inspiring to see clients find that the momentum of their lives begin to shift, aligning with who they are, as they develop the clarity of self-knowledge and the confidence to act on it. I love helping them achieve this! R E T R E AT: What is the difference between meditation and mindfulness? SA R A H: Based on my experience and how I use the two, mindfulness can provide a lovely sense of present moment awareness and an appreciation of the here and now. Our mindful living techniques are often quite short but powerful, helping to bring about

shifts in perspective. At Samyama Life, we delve into mindful values ... How does my typical behaviour and responses to people line up with what I value in life? Once we understand that, we can be more mindful of how we interact with ourselves and others, using values as our rudder. We use an active form of meditation known as kriya meditation. In kriya meditation, we cultivate specific and deliberate change to our energetic body, not just the mental or physical body. I love it because I see how powerful it can be to create deep and lasting change for people to areas of their lives that need it. For example, if someone is having the same troubles again and again in life, we would stimulate the navel centre through the kriya, which is a place associated with assimilation of lifes experiences into wisdom, not just digestion of food! R ET R EAT: How can I get started and where should I start a meditation practice? SA R A H : With a Samyama Life retreat! In my tradition, there is a specific pathway around a student’s progression in meditation. We would start by strengthening and purifying the mind and body, then move to cultivate calm and stability from our practice. These steps are really important to do before seeking any kind of expansion or illumination from meditation as they provide the right foundation to build upon. If you built a house on a shaky foundation, you wouldn’t expect it to last for long, and we can say the same about meditation. If you go all-in for a practice that is energising and uplifting right away, and you don’t have the foundation of calm and stability in place, you can make yourself very unbalanced. When I work one on one with guests, I look at what they are wishing to achieve, their lifestyle, diet, their existing habits and routines, their state of mind and physical constitution. All of these considerations will play a part in how I would design their home practice. R ET R EAT: How can we learn more about Samyama Life? Naturally, we’re head over heels— sandals, of course—for them. Whether you’re lounging on the beaches of Maui or sipping cocktails poolside in the Hamptons, these colours will ensure ‘best-dressed’ status everywhere you go.

LIGHT While the pandemic has dimmed the stage spotlight for Pussycat Dolls star, Carmit, it has brightened a new world beacon of light. Written by Elizabeth Taylor

“It forced us to change the definition of who we thought we were. It is never easy. It is never fun. It’s our metamorphosis.”

As the world took a tumultuous beating from the crashing waves of the pandemic, Carmit found her way, like a bright glow from a lighthouse. The performer was in the midst of a worldwide reunion tour with the Pussycat Dolls when the planet froze up and went into the COVID-19 lockdown in March. “We were back in that whirlwind of going non-stop and flying across the world,” said the singer about the start of her 2020 concert series. “I remember that I had said good-bye to my daughter for what was supposed to be three months. Then instead I was back home in a week. It was a shocker.” The grounding was an adjustment that she took in stride. Being no stranger to adversity the artist had prepared herself for the gruelling tour around the globe, but what happened next was beyond unexpected. Being back home in California with her eight-year-old daughter Keala and fiancé, Kevin Whitaker, brought her into a different arena that forced her to evaluate everything and summon that light within. “The challenge of 2020 has just been to be present. There is so much fear. There is so much uncertainty and we are spiralling. It is hard to not let our minds go down that dark road, that rabbit hole. I think for me it is really about clarity and to keep moving forward in a way that will help us find the new normal. It forced us to change the definition of who we thought we were. It is never easy. It is never fun. It’s our metamorphosis.” The recent onset of tinnitus was challenging as it brought on more anxiety. It took her on a journey of discovering the underlying cause which she says uncovered many layers. She became intricately tuned in with learning how to heal through healthy living and discipline. From changing her diet to every modality and integrative treatment available. “I’m so grateful for my family. I couldn’t have done it without their support,” she says. Being in Santa Monica with her daughter Keala Rose made her protective as any mother has been during these trying times. Her family dynamic of bringing up a bi-racial child amidst a health crisis and a national cry for equal rights with Black Lives Matter added another dimension that called upon her inner power.

“We will be fine. We will make it to the other side. But we need each other to do it and we need to know we are not alone.”

Carmit had to find a balance between the questioning of the movement by her own father, who she says perhaps was not fully aware of the importance of BLM because of a generational gap. Also, Kevin was not fully on board with bringing Keala to marches at the peak of the protests. The couple had openly discussed what it meant for him to have a personal fear of driving a car alone and possibly being pulled over by police for no fault of his own, simply based on the colour of his skin. But racial tensions were a subject that they had to approach tactfully with their child. “Keala is aware of it to a certain degree,” stated the artist. “I don’t want to imprint anything on her either because she is her own person. She should see the value in that everyone is equal. It is a delicate subject. And I have to say when all the imagery on social media was too intense to watch I had to back off. It doesn’t mean that I don’t support the cause. I actively support the cause...I just have to be protective on so many levels.” Keala is also just learning about government in virtual elementary school. Bringing up the subject of presidential elections in the household, her only proclamation to ageappropriate family and fans alike is, “get out there and vote.” The Pussycat Doll’s tour may be on hold until spring next year, but plans for the band to be back in action are still in play. With 2021 concert dates sold already out, the future for her is focusing on staying a bright beacon of light for her home and her admirers. She continues to write in her journal and hopes to find a way to bring her inspirational words to print someday soon. She is stronger than ever after reflecting on life during what is one of the hardest times of existence in recent history. When speaking about her newfound strength her advice is poignant. “I feel like everybody has something on their plate that they are dealing with - some form of trauma that they need healing from whether it is physical, mental, or spiritual. There is something big that is happening in every single person’s life. We all just need a little more compassion for one another. We need more patience and understanding. We need to be gentle with ourselves. It is just so important with what we are going through. We will be fine. We will make it to the other side. But we need each other to do it and we need to know we are not alone.”

HOLIDAY RULES The singing sensation shines in the spotlight on stages across the planet as brightly as she does when she plans moments for perfect travel and relaxation. You have performed all over the world and are the ultimate globetrotter. What are some of your favourite destinations when you are taking time for yourself off the stage? I always love going somewhere tropical like Hawaii. I was just in Maui in February. I love the ocean, and I love to swim. My fave staycation is Shutters on the Beach here in Santa Monica. Where is the first place you want to go when travel restrictions are lifted and the world is in a better place? Bali! My mom and grandmother are from Indonesia. I just have never been to Bali with my mom or my family together. In the early days of The Pussycat Dolls recording group, we did the MTV Asia Awards. Bali was less than three hours away and I went on a personal adventure there. I cried the day I left I loved it so much. Some day I would love to do it with family. Your travel bucket list for 2021? There are so many exotic places I want to go! I love the Greek Islands, especially Santorini and also the South of France. There are so many beautiful destinations. Maldives, Mallorca. Life is so short, we have to get out there! One thing on my bucket list I want to see is the Northern Lights. What do you pack to exercise on a vacation? I take a yoga mat. I also have a Shakti acupuncture mat I like. Any good tips for on the road from what you are reading right now? I am reading three books right now. The Empath’s Survival Guide, The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield, and Crash Course. It is a book that was given to me after I had a car accident a year and a half ago. It teaches you how we need to unwind the trauma after a crash and in your life. Next up I am starting You Are a Badass. Follow Carmit @therealcarmit on Instagram/Twitter

MARA MARTIN Mother, model, and advocate, Mara Martin rose to fame after walking in the 2018 Sports Illustrated Runway Show while breastfeeding her then 5-month-old daughter, Aria. That moment, which has gained over 40 billion impressions, has been hailed as a ground-breaking moment for women and mothers worldwide, in an effort to normalizing breastfeeding. Since then, Mara has worked as an advocate for women and mothers around the world. She works closely with the organization Save the Children as a Celebrity Cabinet member and is currently writing her first book to be published in 2021

WHEN YOU CAN TRAVEL AGAIN, WHERE WILL BE YOUR FIRST DESTINATION? I will definitely be going to see family first. My fiancé’s family lives in Canada and we haven’t seen them in so long; almost a year. So going to Toronto will be our first trip! My brother also had his third little girl that we haven’t met yet, so we also want to go to San Diego where they live. After that, I want to travel somewhere tropical for a vacation after being stuck in the house for so long. I think we all deserve a vacation at this point! WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ISLAND OR BEACH HOTEL? The Dalmar hotel in Fort Lauderdale is pretty special. It has an amazing view of the city, a block away from the beach, and a rooftop pool to die for. It has everything you could ever want in a hotel! My favourite island hotel is hands down Jade Mountain Beach resort. It’s in St. Lucia and has the most incredible views of the Piton mountains. The last time we were there we had the place all to ourselves, and the views from the pool overlooking the ocean and the Pitons is a memory that I will never forget. ON YOUR TRAVEL BUCKET LIST FOR 2021? I’m used to travelling at least once a month for work, so as travelling has been put to a halt I feel like I have missed out this year. So for 2021, I want to make up for all of the lost travel and get going again. One place I have always wanted to visit is Hawaii. It’s always been on top of my list of places to go and I’ve heard it’s incredibly beautiful. Hopefully, 2021 is the year it will happen! Another place I would love to go to is Exuma, the Bahamas to swim with the pigs. The water is crystal clear and we are big animal lovers so it would be such a dream come true! Something closer to home would be taking my daughter Aria to Disney. She is at the age where Anna and Elsa are two of her closest friends, and dressing her up in a princess dress to meet them would bring her so much joy. YOUR VACATION STYLE? Being a mom of a 2-year old that I’m constantly chasing around, I try to stay stylish but also comfortable. A beach maxi dress, a good pair of jean shorts, and a crisp white tee are always in my suitcase. While on vacation I also tend to spend

most of my time by the ocean or pool, so finding a few really nice bathing suits that are comfortable but make me feel confident are a must. I love just throwing a cover-up on over my suit and heading out. I also love matching my little one; finding different brands that sell matching clothes. I don’t know how long she’s going to let me do it, so I’m taking full advantage of it now! HOW DO YOU GET READY FOR A BEACH HOLIDAY? I have to admit I’m the world’s biggest procrastinator! I’m not one of those people who pack weeks in advance. But I do start thinking of outfits early on that I might want to put together for places we might go. I put together a list of options of what to bring and what clothing I can wear more than once to mix and match, so I don’t have to bring as much stuff. Now, I will say it’s quite the opposite when I’m packing for my daughter. I always overpack; so many swimsuits, cute dresses and shoes. Toddlers get so messy so quickly, and I always want to be over-prepared so I don’t run out of things. I swear she has more clothes than me! HOW DO YOU STAY IN SHAPE ON A HOLIDAY? When I go on holiday I like to relax and just enjoy the time there. But I always say that doing something is better than doing nothing. Going for daily walks is always a must and it allows you to explore the places you are vacationing. I love taking a walk along the beach and enjoying the sound of the wind and the waves. Every once in a while, I will bring resistance bands with me in case I want to get a quick work out in, but for the most part, a holiday for me is straight vacation mode! WHAT DO YOU PACK TO EXERCISE ON A VACATION? I think working out can be done with minimal equipment. Once and while I pack bands to use for resistance training but for the most part just doing bodyweight exercises (lunges, squats, situps, pushups) gets the job done. There are a ton of Instagram live workouts posted daily and great online tools to use if you want to do a quick workout in your room. Usually, when I’m on vacation I try to enjoy the vacation and not focus as much on working out though!

HOW ARE YOU STAYING INSPIRED? This year more than any other year, I feel like we all have a lot on our plates with the pandemic. Whether you’re juggling working from home with a toddler like me, or you’re trying to navigate not being around as many people and what your next plan is, it can all be very stressful and negative feelings can set in very quickly. Finding something or someone to keep you motivated is always helpful. For me, being a mother always keeps me inspired. I always want to set a good example for Aria as she is my biggest motivator. Whenever I am down or not feeling motivated, I think about how I can be better for her, so I dig deep and do just that. I always want to be the best version of myself for her! I also think tackling small tasks is good. With so much uncertainty in the world right now, getting small things done throughout the day helps me feel less overwhelmed. WHAT ARE YOU READING? I love to read books on the power of attraction and positivity. I’m a huge believer in the mantra, you get what you put out. So the more positive you put out into the world, the more positive will come back to you. I love books on manifesting and visualizing what you want in life. I truly believe if you want something bad enough, you can manifest it in your thinking process, and achieve it. The book called “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne is a really good one that talks about this. SKINCARE TIPS? First and foremost, always wear sunscreen! I came from the tanning bed era and didn’t realize how damaging the sun can be! Now I make sure to always have some type of sunscreen on, especially my face. Another great one is to always wash your makeup off before bed. Keeping your makeup on will clog your pores and ages your skin. Our skin is the one thing we wear every single day, so let’s take care of it! DO YOU HAVE ANY BEAUTY TIPS FOR FLYING? When I fly, my skin gets really dry. I like to bring a sheet mask to put on after I land. I also think it’s important to drink tons of water so you’re not dehydrated once you arrive. I always bring a reusable water bottle to fill up when I’m on the go. WHAT SWIMWEAR TREND IS A MUST THIS SEASON? I’m loving a good one piece. I think a lot of times women feel like they can only be sexy in a string bikini but for me, a one-piece can be sexy too. I especially love the ones that are high cut on the leg. It’s like an homage to the 90s supermodel. So hot and flattering! WHAT ACTIVEWEAR TREND IS A MUST TO PACK? I don’t know if this is on trend or not but I like bright colours and patterns for activewear. I feel like the black legging is a good staple to have in your suitcase as well but I like to mix and match. It makes me dread working out just a little less knowing I have a cute bright outfit on. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPA TREATMENT? I don’t have a ton of time to go to the spa so when I do I love a good massage and facial. Just being able to sit there and completely relax is such a luxury for mums.

A bi-product of the fashion industry, LMS is a vision born from a lifetime of being behind the scenes and a desire to innovate. Lisa has worked in the fashion industry for 10+ years and has always had the dream to dress women all over the world.

HOW AND WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION WHEN DESIGNING? Often, the first place I start is my wardrobe. I look and see what is missing and have a think about what I feel like wearing and styling my outfits with at the time. I also love to go to vintage stores and take inspiration from vintage shoes, I especially love to do this in LA! WHEN AND HOW DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO BE A FASHION/SHOE DESIGNER? I always knew I wanted to start my own business and I had noticed a gap in the market for accessible, fashion-forward footwear for years. However, I’ve always worked on the business side of things, I was a buyer for 5 years. Once I started working on developing some of the in house brands I grew some confidence that I could finally bring my idea to life. YOUR MOST LOVED VACATION DESTINATION? This is such a tough one! I’d have to say it would be between Tel Aviv and Cape Town and as they are in the different hemispheres you can have two summer holidays in one year! FAVOURITE HOTEL? I make sure to pack lip balm and hand lotion to re-apply throughout the flight. I’ve also been told that applying lip balm around the nostrils and lips can prevent bacteria from entering and therefore reduce the risk of catching an illness on the plane. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR STYLE? Classic, casual and a bit sexy! WHAT’S SWIMWEAR TREND IS A MUST THIS SEASON? I think the one-piece is coming back in a big way! From mountain refuges to nature reserves, island hideaways to tropical rainforests, these sublime secluded places offer the perfect escape from the modern world.

Mexcaltitán R I V I E R A N AYA R I T, M E X I C O A short boat ride from Riviera Nayarit´s coast brings travellers to the small island of Mexcaltitán, nicknamed the “Mexican Venice”, thanks to the many canals that crisscross through it. Mexcaltitán is a place shrouded in mystical and magical history that is well worth a visit. The northern area of Riviera Nayarit located alongside Mexico’s Pacific coast immerses visitors in the history of ancient Mexico. A day trip to Mexcaltitán will whisk visitors away to a world of mystery and unique cultural experiences. The island is deep-rooted in ancient Aztec history and many historians believe that this island is the birthplace of modernday Mexico. Visitors will find no cars. A canoe ride around the charming island takes about 30 minutes and provides numerous photo opportunities as well as many surprises including a close-up view of the island’s only soccer pitch—in the middle of a lake. Travellers will be enchanted by thousands of colourful Mexican houses and local restaurants offering fresh shrimp ceviche or tlaxtihuil (a traditional corn-based shrimp chowder) with the ingredients caught right outside their very doors.

Samana DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Samaná is one of the Dominican Republic’s bestkept secrets. Tucked away on the north-eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, stretching out into the Atlantic, the Samaná Peninsula enjoys splendid isolation from the rest of the country and many Dominicans say this is the most appealing part of their country. With traditional charm, a laid-back vibe and long, uncrowded, white-sand beaches, Samaná Peninsula is a hidden gem with most of its land still wild and undeveloped. The Samaná province is full of incredible scenery: craggy limestone cliffs with panoramic views and rolling hills blanketed in coconut trees, tropical forests, colourful villages dotted along the rough roads, vibrant local markets scattered around the port town and a handful of sea view restaurants. Those who travel here often come in search of one of the most secluded and stunning beach in the Dominican Republic: Playa Rincón: a dreamy three-mile-long, undeveloped stretch on the peninsula’s easternmost tip. A popular activity in Samaná is the jungle trek on horseback to the Salto El Limón. In the middle of the Samaná Peninsula, the Salto El Limón (Lemon Waterfall) is a 170-foot majestic waterfall that cascades into a swimming hole. The 1.5-mile trek to the waterfall can be made on foot, or horseback where you can dive into the refreshing fresh turquoise water.

Guyana Travellers looking for a sense of seclusion from the outside world should look no further than the remote, uncharted lands of Guyana. Over 80% of Guyana’s territory is dense, pristine rainforest where human contact is seldom and total immersion in raw nature is an inevitability. Guyana’s eco-systems have evolved over millennia undisturbed by human development meaning that even the most impressive landmarks such as Kaieteur Falls, the world’s largest single-drop waterfall, is free of hordes of tourists. Wildlife Worldwide’s tour ‘Guyana: A Pristine Wilderness’ takes travellers into a variety of ecosystems including tropical rainforest, savannahs, wetlands, mighty rivers, mangroves, and mountains. Visitors will have the chance to spot iconic animals such as black caiman, giant anteater, giant river otter, arapaima, harpy eagle, capybara, and green anaconda.

Refugi L’illa ANDORRA Nestled in between Spain and France in the heart of the Pyrenees, the tiny principality of Andorra is a hidden gem for those looking for a remote mountain break. For the ultimate escape in the clouds, guarded ‘refuges’, or catered mountain huts, are located high in the mountains and are only accessible via foot (or helicopter), offering a comfortable bed for the night and a hearty meal after a day of hiking. The refuges are surrounded by the spectacular Pyrenees, where guests can take in the fresh mountain air and admire the stunning views feeling completely disconnected from everyday life. 27 mountain huts are hidden along hiking routes in Andorra, four of which are catered and can be found along the Coronallacs walking trail. These rural, yet well-equipped refuges, are the ideal cosy spot for guests to relax ahead of another day of exploring.

Lihou Island GUERNSEY Lihou is a tidal island situated off the west coast of Guernsey, and only accessible via a quarter-mile causeway at low tide. Visitors have to check the tide timetable at the start of the causeway before venturing over to the island to ensure that the tide doesn’t come in and cut them off from the mainland – otherwise, a 6-hour wait ensues. The island is home to the ruins of a Benedictine Priory, founded in the 12th century, and locals’ favourite secret spot for swimming – the Venus Pool – which traps water at high-tide providing a safe and warm place to enjoy the seawater. Along the shoreline, there is plenty of wildlife to explore, which has made this tiny place their Island home. For the ultimate remote island break, there is a self-catered house on the island available for overnight stays, enabling residents to enjoy the peace and tranquillity that can be absent from modern life. There is no television or music system in the house but there are engaging views that are ever-changing with the weather, light, and tides.

Ses Salines Natural Reserve IBIZA Ses Salines Natural Reserve, located in the south of Ibiza and spreading across to the north of Formentera, provides visitors with the opportunity to experience the island’s lesser-known side, including its characteristic salt dunes, hidden coves, and wetlands. With its diverse and varied landscape, Ses Salines Natural Reserve is home to many animal and plant species, including the underwater meadows of Posidonia Oceanica, the unique seagrass growing around the coast, said to be a vital source of oxygen; and a reason behind the sparkling clear waters for which the Balearic Islands archipelago is known. Ses Salines also plays an important role in bird migration. Over 200 bird species pass through the park annually, including flamingos which rest in Ibiza for a few days every year between August and October. The area is also home to several sparsely inhabited villages, such as Sant Françesc, an authentic and traditional village built by salt workers in the 18th century, which allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the cultural and historical heritage of the White Island and experience its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

HOTELS HOSTING

ONE-OF-A-KIND

Culinary Extravaganzas Rare is the hotel that doesn’t make noise about a winemaker’s dinner now and then, or a food promotion the likes of which you’ve never tasted. And why not? The appeal of any given hotel room is fixed. But

food, well, the sky’s the limit. Here’s where a hotel really gets to show off its creativity and its panache. A number of hotels across Asia are stepping up to the table with food festivals, seafood markets and even camels. Here’s some of what’s cooking from Hanoi to Muscat.

128 | RETREATMAG.COM

Laguna Lang Co

In Vietnam, taking it to the streets is never a bad idea in a culinary sense. In one of Asia’s top destinations for food, some of the tastiest morsels can be sampled for cents on sidewalks the length and breadth of the country. Indeed, guests who are cloistered away in luxury resorts and hotels often get to merely skim the surface of the nation’s gastronomic traditions, which are often best represented via a humble vendor in a conical hat than a maestro in chef whites. At Laguna Lang Co, though, guests can have the best of every world thanks to a weekly celebration of Vietnamese street food, which takes place on the front lawn of the Angsana resort every Wednesday and Thursday. Organised as part of Laguna Lang Co’s “Seedlings” program — a vocational training scheme for young locals — the authentic foodie extravaganza serves up a full range of street food classics with dishes including bánh xèo (sizzling Vietnamese pancake) and bún bò Huế (spicy beef noodle soup).

Tanah Gajah

A RESORT BY HADIPRANA While farm to table movements are on the rise around the world, Chef Khairudin ‘Dean’ Nor thought he might do the movement one better by cutting out the costs of transportation almost entirely. The ingredients for the resort’s 2 - 2.5 hour slow food experience are harvested within 100 metres of the table Dean sets, with the bulk coming from the organic garden. He also likes to draw from other areas of the verdant grounds. The catfish are caught from a pond behind the garden, the yams grow behind a villa, the cinnamon was ground from bark on a tree by the pool. You get the picture. The whole affair is equal parts horticultural survey, with a tour of the garden cocktail in hand; interactive food prep, as the chef prepares the meals in front of guests; and dining in a purpose-built gazebo by the garden. The five course dinner starts at 2,800,000 IDR per couple ($190 USD). There’s a maximum capacity of six people and it is only available Mondays and Thursdays.

the chedi muscat

They’re not letting the camel get his nose into your tent, or onto your plate at The Chedi Muscat, but they have enlisted a local dromedary as guide on a culinary journey through one of the most exquisite resorts on the Arabian Peninsula. The new ‘Caravan of Taste’ adventure is a five-stop, three-and-a-half-hour tour of the hotel’s contemporary interpretations of cuisines developed in Arabia, India and Japan. The journey begins with a Prosecco in the Lobby Lounge Courtyard, where the hotel’s culinary impresario, aka the chef, details the night’s routing. The caravan sets off in the camel’s path to the beat of a drum, pausing en route by the 103-metre Long Pool for Japanese appetisers at the pool’s cabana in a family-style set up. From there, it’s down a sandy path to the hotel’s Beach Restaurant for an array of seafood. The camel’s final stop of the evening is at the Serai Pool, for shisha and dessert.

sofitel legend METROPOLE HANOI

A veritable constellation of Michelin stars has descended on Hanoi the past two years for “Culinary Stars” week, which brings together top international chefs for a series of extraordinary meals at the Metropole. Since its launch in 2018, “Culinary Stars” has quickly established itself as one of the most significant events on Vietnam’s annual culinary calendar. Last year’s edition featured 18 globally renowned chefs, including six with Michelin stars. Chef Jacques Pourcel of the 3-Michelin-star Le Jardin de Sens in Montpellier, France has twice headlined the event. In addition to the exclusive dinners and lunches, “Culinary Stars” also includes a live cooking contest, meet-and-greet sessions with the chefs, and more. It is typically held in early October.

melia ho tram BEACH RESORT

Thronged with locals haggling for the freshest catch of the day, Vietnam’s seafood markets are an icon unto themselves. It’s this eclectic market atmosphere that Meliá Ho Tram Beach Resort brings to life right on its grounds every Saturday night as part of its new “Seafood Market” experience. As the sun goes down to the right of the resort’s 500m of ocean frontage, the resort’s executive chef Mahdi Ghenam and his team bring out an array of large bamboo baskets brimming with seafood caught from local waters that day. Showcasing crabs, lobsters, squid, fish such as grouper and snapper, shrimp, mussels, snails, clams and scallops, the baskets are assembled on bamboo stalls at Breeza Beach Club’s outdoor terrace to a backdrop of live chill-out music. Other meat including large tomahawk steaks is also on offer. Diners determine if their seafood and meats are grilled, wok-fried or steamed, and choose from sauces and popular Vietnamese accompaniments including lime, chili, ginger, garlic, onion, coriander and mint basil.

the anam cam ranh

When it comes to cooking, nothing is as sacrosanct as a home-cooked meal. That’s why The Anam has recruited a half-dozen mothers of its staff to serve up an authentic slice of Vietnamese culture every Friday evening. Drawing on centuries-old recipes handed down the generations, the mother cooks serve up timeless Vietnamese classics, as if they were cooking for their own families. These mothers plate up fresh, healthy and delectable Vietnamese fare at cooking stations at the resort’s Lang Viet Restaurant that overlooks Long Beach. The dishes include bò nướng lá lốt (grilled beef in betel leaf), bún bò Huế (Hue-style beef noodle soup) and bánh xèo (crispy Vietnamese pancake), and are complemented by plenty of fresh, zesty salads and other treats. These women didn’t train as cooks,” said The Anam’s founder and owner Pham Van Hien. “They didn’t go to culinary school, and carry no fancy titles. But oh how they can cook. This is how we Vietnamese eat day to day, and we’re thrilled to share this very same taste with our guests.”
