HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE RENÉE’S MINIMALIST GLAM FOR THE COVER? Makeup: Renée has gorgeous skin and lots of freckles, and I wanted those to come through. I used a palette from Sigma Beauty to create a natural smoke around the eyes, and then I used an Urban Decay lime green eyeliner in the corner of the eye. There’s a Sigma gloss that’s a soft rosewood shimmer, and I added just a little to hydrate her lips. I didn’t want her to look like she had lip colour or lipstick. It’s really about the elements and the crisp white clothes, and her looking fresh and beautiful. There wasn’t too much makeup, there wasn’t too much hair, there weren’t too many clothes—there was something very effortless, which was so nice.

LETTER FROM THE BEAUTY EDITOR TROY JENSEN

Hair: She has beautiful, thick brown hair, and I just wanted it clean. I straightened it and put a product in it for some shine, and pretty much kept it back most of the day. Sometimes a few strands fell forward, but it was just really clean hair. The whole day, she just looked effortless and natural. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR “COLOUR CONUNDRUM” SHOOT? For this beauty shoot, I wanted it to have a different feel, but still very minimalistic and very natural. You know, who doesn’t want hypnotic eyes behind their face mask? Everywhere you go, masks are mandatory, but you still want to be captivating a bit and play up your eyes. I also incorporated some really beautiful jewellery from Camilla Seretti.

@itstroyjensen Interview by Aaron Royce

HOW DID YOU CREATE THESE COLOURFUL EYE LOOKS? Makeup: I created four different looks using eyeliners, pencils, liquid liners and eyeshadows to create unique looks that take you away from the neutral browns and blacks, and I used colour. On one, I did a teal blue and a lime green eye. The second look was a lemon yellow wingtip, and on the bottom of the lash line, I painted little white lashes so her eyes looked kind of like sunflowers, which is pretty. And then, I did a blue wingtip eye and a beautiful deep plum-lined eye. It was really pretty, and a little on the edgier side. Hopefully, this will inspire girls to break out of the norm of neutrals and browns and have some fun with some colour.

SIGMA BEAUTY, eyeshadow palette (Rendezvous), $30

DIOR, Colour & Contour duo (Brown/ Peach), $34

Hair: I let the hair down, and I waved it. Renée’s hair had a little bit more of a gypsy bohemian kind of vibe, and very different than the way I styled her for the cover. This was brushed out and wavy, so it gave a completely different mood. WHAT INSPIRED “WALK ON THE WILD SIDE” WITH LAUREN BENNETT? I loved the elements of hitchhiking, road-tripping, sort of escaping the chaos. This kind of is what inspired me, being cooped up in quarantine for six months. So many people that I spoke to just had this thing like, “I just can’t wait to travel and just get out of town.” It’s very effortless, it’s a little bit rebellious, a little edgy, and I wanted the makeup to look, from the minute we started shooting like she slept in it. I wasn’t trying to make it too perfect. If you went to a glamorous event, and then you slept in your makeup, that’s how I wanted her makeup to look. HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE LAUREN’S DESERT BEAUTY?

DIOR, Rouge Dior lipstick (Rose Montaigne), $38

To smudge the eyes and give it kind of an edgy, lived-in look, I used Diorshow Colour and Contour; it’s a two-sided pencil, one side is a highlighter and the other is the liner. This created matte skin, matte lips, matte eyes. I added a touch of that brown to her brows to make them quite strong. It gave an opaque look to the face, there are not too many colours—it’s very matte, nude, the only colour was really that brown. The matte lip almost blends into the skin.

KONA ON THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII The Perfect Day: Waking up at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and walking to the white sand en route to the beach to meditate and reflect on the beauty of the area. Memorable Moments: Blue Hawaiian Helicopters does an amazing island tour that feels very like Jurassic Park and you can take in the whole island from high in the clouds. Where to stay? Eat? Shop? Stay at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Ocean Sports offers an amazing snorkeling day trip out on the water. What do you pack? I pack some chic evening, dinner and swim looks plus plenty of sunscreen as it’s HOT!

SCOTLAND

“Although I love luxury travel, one of my most memorable holidays was the solo backpacking trip I took on the West Highland Way in Scotland.”

bored! It was an all-around amazing experience and a feat that I am particularly proud of (96 miles of hiking). Where to stay? Eat? Shop?

Clear mornings with a cup of coffee, walking through stunning landscapes, and ending the day with a well deserved meal. Nothing beats the feeling of falling asleep under the stars at the end of an adventurous day.

I carried my tent on my back the entire time, but there are plenty of really incredible places to stay and eat along the way; everything from hobbit huts to luxury hotels and a lot of pubs! If you’re interested in splurging, be sure to eat and stay at the Kingshouse Hotel in Glencoe!

Memorable Moments:

What do you pack?

The most memorable part of a trip like this is always the people you meet and the ever-changing, jaw-dropping landscapes. I went on this trip by myself, but there wasn’t a single day when I felt lonely or

Only the camping essentials! If you don’t hire a bag carrying service, you have to be very careful about how much your bag weighs! Don’t forget a good pair of hiking boots and extra blister pads.

LONDON

“My heart goes to London in winter as my number one travel destination. I have so many meaningful memories there and the unique metropolis there never bores me.” The Perfect Day: London is no less than a labyrinth of things to do. You can approach it in different ways, but I recommend doing your research to see what you want out of it. If you’re interested in something, you can find a prominent ‘scene’ for it somewhere there. But simply walking around and sightseeing can be an eventful activity on its own. Grab a coffee with a friend and stroll through some alleys and bridges, just explore! If you’re up around Christmas time, visiting Winter Wonderland is my ultimate recommendation. It made a perfect day for me. Memorable Moments: My dad’s family are all from London, but since I’m based in LA, I rarely get to see them. I also grew up in Sydney, Australia, all my life, so my visit to the UK to see my relatives was especially precious. In Australia, Christmas is in the summer, so spending a white Christmas by the fireplace and surrounded by family felt very special and memorable. That year, we also drove down to Wiltshire and visited Stonehenge. It felt nice to tick off something that has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. Where to stay? Eat? Shop? When it comes to eating, it doesn’t get more classic than pub food. The UK generally seems to have great pubs, and they’re very readily accessible by just being everywhere! The best pubs have the ambience that makes you and your friends want to stay way longer than planned. If you’re going to go shopping, Oxford and Regent Street are good places to start. There are so many good stores but be careful not to spend all your money there! It can be tempting, so check out the museums and historical tours! Last but not least, don’t miss out on the art and music scene the city offers. The underground avant-garde is a gem for young people and has inspired me on many occasions. What do you pack? If you’re going in the winter, common sense pleads your warmest clothes (it’ll only be about 40-50 degrees). Try and cover everything, with gloves, scarves, beanies, earmuffs, etc. Whatever it takes. Winter clothes take up a lot of room so just pick what you need. If you’re anything like me, you’ll fill up the extra space in your luggage with shopping.

MELINA FEDELE Social Media Assistant

THE CARIBBEAN The Perfect Day: What makes the perfect day is relaxing in the sun listening to the ocean waves with a yummy refreshing drink. Memorable Moments: A memorable moment is when I took a photo with a monkey and it took my sunglasses. We got a photo of it too, it was great!! Any excursion is also incredible like snorkeling or riding ATV’s. Where to stay? Eat? Shop? I recommend booking through or asking travel agents what they think is the best place to stay and don’t be shy to ask questions! Also, flea markets are popular and fun in touristy areas. What do you pack? I make sure to plan all my outfits, bikinis, shoes and accessories so I don’t overpack. I always pack vlogging equipment like my camera & GoPro, sunscreen, makeup, and toiletries. My tip is to get packing cubes so everything is organized in your luggage.

ITALY

“I love going to anywhere in the Mediterranean, but Italy is my favourite. Somewhere where English isn’t the first language and the water feels cold and fresh in summer.” The Perfect Day: Being welcomed into small communities in Italy or other coastal points and laughing over language barriers, but sharing the same love for the sun, the sea, food and music. Memorable Moments: My first leap off the rocks into the Mediterranean was the most ultimate bucket list joy for me. I didn’t get to experience the coast of Europe until I was in my 30s so it was incredible to finally feel what I’ve only ever heard stories about. Where to stay? Eat? Shop? Usually, I just stay in Airbnb homes, where I get to experience what it’s like to truly live there. We buy local produce and cook at home during the day. Shopping and eating are everywhere! There aren’t many areas where you won’t find beautiful fresh pasta and incredible seafood. What do you pack? A thousand bikinis! Lots of linen, a few cameras and plenty of sunscreen. Also having a spare pair of sandals is essential for me because I always snap my Havaianas. My middle name should be clumsy!

DONNA FELDMAN Model

“My favourite travel destination I’ve ever been to is Bora Bora but one that I could keep coming back to again and again is Aruba.” ARUBA The Perfect Day: The perfect day on vacation there is to have a delicious refreshing breakfast and spend most of the day in the crystal blue gorgeous waters or take a walk on the powdery soft white sand beaches. Memorable Moments: Some memorable moments I had there include staying at Aruba Ocean Villas while also shooting a commercial there for their property. Some things I did included a trip to De Palm Island where they offer a SeaTrek which is an underwater helmet walk experience surrounded by colourful tropical fish. I also went on an off-roading jeep safari and took a dip in their famous natural pool.

Where to stay? Eat? Shop? I enjoyed dining at Elements restaurant on gorgeous Eagle Beach and had fun exploring downtown Oranjestad. Be sure to stop at Cuba’s Cookin’ for the best mojitos on the marina! What do you pack? I would recommend packing sunscreen, some of your favourite bathing suits, sandals, a pair of sneakers, water shoes if you’re feeling adventurous, and of course your favourite summery clothing, lipgloss, waterproof mascara, tweezers, and cute hats and sunglasses.

AARON ROYCE Editorial Assistant

“It’s only a train ride away, and I love the city’s spirit and energy. There’s always something exciting going on— it’s the city that never sleeps, after all.” NEW YORK CITY The Perfect Day: Taking a stroll through Central Park, seeing the city’s skyline from the Empire State Building, and touring the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Public Library. Memorable Moments: Attending New York Fashion Week! The city just feels brighter, bolder and more energetic during that time—people’s outfits are so fabulous, the shows and presentations are so glamorous, and fashion icons are everywhere. I also loved visiting the city with my mom for my sixteenth birthday, where we saw Wicked and Newsies on Broadway together! Where to stay? Eat? Shop? I usually stay with friends when I visit the city. I love getting coffee from Gregory’s, desserts from Magnolia Bakery, and pizza from Artichoke Basille’s. I’m also partial to lunch at Saluggi’s or The Roxy during Fashion Week! There are too many fabulous places to shop. I love Dreems on Air, which specializes in lots of artistic and indie designers, but also Designer Revival, Marc Jacobs and Saks Fifth Avenue. The gorgeous window displays at Bergdorf Goodman are a must-see, and it’s always fun to wander the streets of Soho and discover new boutiques and stores! What do you pack? I always pack several bright printed shirts and graphic white tees, plus a few pairs of trousers that I can wear with anything. I’ll usually bring one black pair and one colourful pair of boots- since I like boots more than any other shoe. I also pack my favourite Zanotti brogues; I bought them secondhand, and they’re covered in these wild zippers and buckles that I love! I never forget an all-black outfit and my favourite leather jacket, in case an original look doesn’t work for an event or the weather. In the winter, I’ll bring a couple of overcoats and colourful sweaters to layer and combat the cold.

FILBERT KUNG Photographer

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL The Perfect Day: I love the vibe in Rio, usually just chilling by the beach in Ipanema or Leblon or just watch the sunset in Aproador. I love the music and the energy of the people in Brazil. Memorable Moments: Every visit is memorable and magical. It is always a beautiful experience, I have a lot of Brazilian friends so I always feel at home. Where to stay? Eat? Shop? I usually stay in Ipanema, rent an apartment since I stay at least two weeks or more. Hotel Fasano in Ipanema, Copacobana Palace Hotel are among the best hotels to stay. A lot of good restaurants like Brazilian cuisine Fogo de Chao, Alessandro Frederico which offers Italian Brazilian fusion. What do you pack? I pack a lot when I travel, but I always bring my camera and my laptop.

Holiday Skin

SURVIVAL GUIDE ‘Tis the season for cocktail parties and family gatherings, but if you’re already stressing over your upcoming commitments, Dr. Kate Jameson, Director of Australia’s leading medical aesthetics clinic, Youth Lab, has found the best procedures and products that will keep your complexion clear, calm and fresh.

HOLIDAY SKIN EMERGENCY #1:

Clogged Pores & Dullness There is nothing worse than clogged pores, blackheads and a lacklustre complexion especially when you are wanting to look your best over the holidays. With extra makeup, later nights, alcohol and extra sugar in the diet it is no wonder the skin is often the first to show signs of fatigue. Clogged pores can develop from a buildup of sebum (oils) and debris within the skin and this is often the result of not cleansing properly at the end of the day, not exfoliating the skin efficiently and using too much occlusive makeup and creams. The solution? Ensure you always double cleanse each night before bed and ALWAYS remove your makeup. A double cleanse should use a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, dirt and excess oils (I love an oil-based cleanser such as Cosmedix Purity Solution for this) and the second cleanse should be more active, preparing the skin for your active serums. A weekly exfoliating mask will also remove any debris from the pores, ensuring any damaged skin cells are gently removed and the complexion left glowing. The Youth Lab Enzyme Elixir mask uses the power of fruit enzymes to gently remove lifeless skin cells, revealing a smoother, more radiant-looking complexion.

HOLIDAY SKIN EMERGENCY #2:

Post-Party Puffiness

Puffy skin and swollen eyes can often be attributed to extra alcohol (think that Christmas cocktail you normally wouldn’t have after work) combined with less sleep. Alcohol causes dehydration, and dehydration affects the skin by causing a reduction in the ground substance and supportive structures. This results in poor skin tone and integrity, and a dry and sallow appearance. As alcohol is a diuretic and slows down gut motility, affects liver function and digestion we see the effects in dehydration, headaches, poor sleep, bloating, poor digestion to name a few. This can result in puffy eyes and sluggish blood flow to the skin resulting in a pale and lifeless complexion. When considering a few more drinks than usual, the addition of a hydrating serum into your skin care regime is essential. I would start using a hydrating serum such as Ultra MD Ultimate B2 Hydrating Serum. This is my go-to product to help restore moisture balance and provide hydration. It’s oil-free, feels smooth and silky on the skin and can be used morning and night. It contains provitamin B5 (Panthenol) and Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) and high levels of hyaluronic acid which work as humectants in the skin (that is they attract and retain water). Treatments such as a relaxing facial with lymphatic drainage can help to improve blood flow to the skin and encourage the lymphatic system to drain away toxins and improve the appearance of puffiness within the skin. Adding a hydrating peptide mask can help to relieve dry, distressed and dehydrated skin and help kickstart your skin’s recovery. But like they say, prevention is better than cure so start sipping that H2O and monitor your intake of alcohol this festive season. HOLIDAY SKIN EMERGENCY #3:

Acne or Blemishes Breakouts and blemishes are one of the more common concerns we see in the clinic during the holidays. Sugar and lifestyle changes can affect the liver and metabolism which results in increased inflammation in the body, often manifesting as acne and congestion.

Many people relax their eating habits this time of year then go on to have a new years ‘detox’ and make new year’s resolutions that fail after a few weeks. Why not keep a bit of balance during the holiday season to avoid the post Christmas slump? Eat a wide variety of lean protein, fruit, vegetables, good fats such as avocados and nuts, and cut out processed foods, whilst allowing a little treat here and there. The use of antioxidants in your skin care regime can also help decrease inflammation in your skin from the dietary changes that accompany the party season. A high dose vitamin C serum works to promote collagen synthesis, provide environmental protection, smooths and firms the skin. Add this to your usual routine and you will see the changes at the end of summer. Our go-to antioxidant serum in the clinic is Cosmedix Affirm and Cosmedix Pepoxide. Regular skin peels focused on controlling inflammation and decongesting the skin will also help to control any blemishes. I also love Hydrafacials for removing debris and congestion from the pores as well as providing an antioxidant infusion into the skin. HOLIDAY SKIN EMERGENCY #4:

Too Much Fun in the Sun The festive season often finds us seeking the sun and enjoying more time outdoors. Excess sun exposure is a direct contributor to our ageing skin and the primary cause of wrinkles, pigmentation changes and of course skin cancer. There is also nothing worse than getting badly sunburnt and being left with peeling and in some bases blistering skin. Daily SPF 30-50+ of a broad-spectrum sunscreen is non-negotiable. Not only will this limit sunburn and DNA damage from both UVA and UVB rays it will prevent and repair pigmentation and ensure any treatments you decide to have done over the silly season will work to their maximum benefit. It is very important to note that any SPF coverage within makeup is not sufficient to protect the skin from the damage of the sun’s UV rays. In addition to sunscreen keeping the skin hydrated after sun exposure is vitally important, especially if any sunburns have occurred. My favourite is our own Youth Lab Hydration Complex containing high levels of hyaluronic acid and aloe vera to 25 | RETREATMAG.COM

soothe and calm the skin. Once your fun in the sun is over and it is time to treat the visible pigmentation that may have occurred, treatment with Broad Band Light (BBL) will remove visible pigment and sun damage, leaving the skin more refined and clear. HOLIDAY SKIN EMERGENCY #5:

Revive Tired Eyes

With later nights, increased social engagements and the increased pressure to get everything “finished” before the new year we often find a lack of sleep can start to contribute to the appearance of our skin and eyes. There is nothing worse than colleagues and friends commenting on how tired you look, so in the case of tired eyes, prevention is better than cure. Smoking, excess caffeine consumption, alcohol, dietary deficiencies, dehydration, sleep deprivation and stress can also contribute to dark circles, puffiness and shadowing under the eye area. Modifying these are the first steps in managing this common problem. Ultimately targeting the eye area early and looking at preventative treatments and lifestyle modifications will deliver the best long term results. Simple treatments such as medical grade eye creams are also useful. A high quality cosmeceutical eye cream can help to increase collagen, firm the skin and target damage from hyperpigmentation by lightning and brightening the skin. A cult favorite is Cosmedix Opti Crystal which will instantly give your eyes the lift they need. A simple pick me up to do in clinic is our PERK eye treatment which infuses skin tightening peptides and brightening ingredients, followed by a hyaluronic acid eye mask. Relaxation and results! Combine this with a course of radiofrequency skin tightening treatments to stimulate collagen and elastin and tired eyes will be no more.

“Preventative treatments & lifestyle modifications will deliver the best long term results.”

COLOUR BLOCKING STRIKING BEAUTY HUES FOR THE NEW SEASON Written by Aaron Royce Regardless of your time zone, new seasons always herald new beauty looks. For fall and summer this year, colourful makeup reigns supreme. Whether you’re applying rosy shadows or punchy liners, there is a range of new hues that everyone can enjoy. All colours of the rainbow are at your disposal to create styles you’ll love! From ravishing pinks to brilliant blues—and every shade in between—these are the best colours to elevate your beauty looks.

ORANGE GIVENCHY BEAUTY, lip gloss, $30

BRONZE CHARLOTTE TILBURY, eyeshadow palette, $45

YELLOW CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN BEAUTY , eyeliner, $40

GREEN HOURGLASS, glitter eyeshadow, $29

SILVER NARS, eyeshadow, $19

BLUE SURRATT BEAUTY , eyeliner, $42 (image 2)

PURPLE TOM FORD BEAUTY, eyeshadow palette, $88

BERRY RODIN, lip & cheek oil, $35

RED BURBERRY BEAUTY , Lip Velvet Crush (Military Red No. 65), $30

PINK

Orange is a fun and flirty look to try, especially in the warm weather seasons! A dash of gloss in a deep tone will make your lips instantly pop. Pair it with a smoky eye and a dash of mascara for an instantly sexy, fun look. It’s no secret that a bronze shadow is the ultimate fall eye look. Dark coppers and terra cotta tones can be blended for a smoky smoulder. Smudging lighter tones in your eyes’ inner corners will also bring an alluring effect. Punchy liner is obviously in right now. Yellow is a trickier tone to master, but when it’s done right it’s extra bright and playful. Apply a deep tone on your upper and lower lash lines for a monochrome effect, or top a slightly darker hue with a lighter, sunshine-yellow tone for an avant-garde look. Deep greens are always in season for autumn. Blending several shades of green—be it olive, emerald or forest— for a tortoiseshell effect has proven popular among celebrities this season for a dramatic look. However, you can simply wear a shade or two of versatile khaki green for a style that’s simple and still makes a statement. Metallics are always trendy, but silver is one to add to your arsenal this season. Use a lighter silver shadow to brighten your eyes, then subtly layer a darker tone around it for fierce drama, or try a shimmering shade all over your lids for a stunning shine. Blue liner has become one of this year’s most popular looks, especially for celebrities. The best part about blue is that it’s one of the more versatile colours. A felt-tip liner will let you make a sleek cat-eye which looks extra daring in blue. Lining blue over gold or light metallic eyeshadow also creates a truly magical effect. Violets, lavenders, plums—call them whatever you desire, but purples are one of the sultriest tones to try this season. Layer an eyeshadow in this colour over a silvery inner-eye shade, or add sparkly shadows on the inner and outer corners over a matte hue, for a look that’s celestial and enchanting. A deep berry shade is one of our favourites for fall—and all year round. A lightweight oil works as bothblush and a lip colour. Layer it on your lips for a deep statement, or swipe it on once for a glossy effect. For your cheeks, lightly glide the tone across for a subtle flush. A deep red lip is everyone’s classic go-to. However, this season, a velvety look is the hottest trend that’s equally lovely. A creamy, soft red lipstick will make your pout instantly enchanting. Colorful eyeliner is all the rage right now, for both its playful fun and ease. If you want to add an instant pop of colour, try a hot, hot pink. The daring tone will make this girly colour instantly edgy and cool—especially if you match it to your outfit.

IT’S IN THE EYES

Today’s makeup routine balances between effortless and barely there. This season, that means that beauty’s all about the eyes. Whether vibrantly colourful or all-natural, there’s a range of enchanting looks for everyone to love. Our Beauty Editor Troy Jensen created four quick looks to vamp up your eye makeup (and they’re affordable, too—all products were under $10!). See how he created each one for our new beauty editorials—and try them for yourself!

WET N WILD, liquid eyeliner (Voltage Blue), $4

BOLD BLUE

Clean your eyelids with a Q-tip and water. Dry them, then dab on a translucent face powder. Curl and coat your lashes with black mascara. Then, draw along your upper lash line with a blue liquid liner. Wing it out as far as you like! On the bottom of the eye, I drew a very thin line along the lower lash line, winging it out slightly and applying blue mascara to the bottom lashes.

NYX Professional Makeup, liquid eyeliner (Matte White), $7

NYX Professional Makeup, liquid eyeliner (Vivid Halo), $7

WHITE &YELLOW

Clean your eye area with a Q-tip and water. Let the skin dry for one minute, then apply yellow liquid eyeliner along the upper lash line, winging it on the outer edges. Take a white liquid liner and practice drawing thin little eyelashes on the back of your hand. Then, starting with the outer edges of the lower lash line, draw small lines to mimic lashes. Make the outer lines a little longer, and draw smaller ones as you get closer to the centre of the lower lash line. Curl your lashes and then add some black mascara. A dash of lip oil will also keep your lips looking fresh and hydrated.

REVLON, eyeliner (Righteous Rum), $9

ULTA BEAUTY, juice-infused lip oil (Baby Pink), $9

RED RED RED REVLON, eyeshadow (Peach Prism), $9

First, apply the liquid peach eyeshadow on your upper eyelid, blending it up to the crease. I brought it down to the inner corner of the eye for a pop of glow. Then, draw the deep plum eyeliner along the lower lash line, and lightly smudge it with a Q-tip. I curled the upper lashes and applied black mascara and applied red mascara on the bottom lashes. Add some natural shine to your lips with a lip oil, as well.

NYX Professional Makeup, liquid eyeliner (Vivid Escape), $7

GREEN &TURQUOISE Draw along your lower lash line with a teal eyeliner pencil and clean up any mistakes with a pointed Q-tip. Then draw a line along your upper lash line with the lime green eyeliner, and smudge it a bit with a Q-tip. Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler, then coat them with black mascara. Add some lip oil to keep your lips sleek and supple.

HYDRATION Written by Aaron Royce

As summer transitions into fall, the weeks ahead are essential for hydration. Keeping your skin moisturized and wellnourished is extremely important this time of year— whether you’re on chilly or sunny parts of the globe. And of course, with so many of us staying home right now, it’s never been easier to stay hydrated at home. To vamp up your skincare routine—or just bring yourself refreshed glow—read on for the best ways to quench your skin’s thirst this season.

FACE MASK A face mask is the most soothing way to give your skin instant hydration. Masks like Circumference’s are sure to rejuvenate your skin, thanks to water-rich botanical ingredients like hibiscus and cactus flower. Add this to a cleansed face for 20 minutes, then rinse for instant moisture. CIRCUMFERENCE, face mask, $65

SERUM Serums are all the rage, and it’s easy to see why. A little bit of one goes a long way—and they’re super easy to add to your skincare routine! Place a few drops on your fingertips, and rub in circular motions across your face after toning. Your skin’s sure to feel refreshed in no time. LANCER, serum, $75

MOISTURIZER Of course, a good old-fashioned moisturizer is the best way to hydrate your skin long-term. And if you don’t have one in your skincare routing, there’s no time like the present! A gel moisturizer is easy to apply, and its’ lightweight texture won’t feel heavy on your skin. Be sure to look for products with organic ingredients, especially fruits, that will also provide nutrients for your skin to feel plump and smooth. MARC JACOBS BEAUTY, gel moisturizer, $89

MIST A mist is the easiest method for fast hydration—and it can be done anytime! Spritz a mist onto your T-zone, cheeks and neck before moisturizing, or after toning. It’ll instantly soak into your skin, making you feel revitalized and radiant. DR. BARBARA STURM, face mist, $95

EYE CREAM Eye creams not only hydrate, but also brighten the delicate under-eye area—which can’t be done with most facial products. Use one both morning and night after cleansing, and be sure that it’s fully absorbed when you apply. Dark circles, be gone! RÉVIVE, eye cream, $150

THE MEDITATION GENERATION WITH SARAH ROLLINS

42 | RETREATMAG.COM

M E D I TAT E If you have been toying with the idea of meditating, then it’s time to jump on the band wagon before the horse bolts. According to stats between 200500 million* people globally meditate, and this number is steadily growing. Celebs from Lady Gaga to Selena Gomez swear by its plethora of health benefits which broadly seem to provide an antidote to the stressors of modern and fast-paced living. This month we caught up with our resident meditation expert, Sarah Rollins, who runs the digital meditation platform, Samyama Life, where the who’s who of the meditation crowd go to get calm and grow their EI. We get the essential hot tips on the latest styles that are trending now from the meditation world.

For more, please visit www.samyamalife.com *www.thegoodbody.com/meditation-statistics/

WHAT’S HOT Kriya meditation is what it’s all about at the moment. These are turbo-charged active meditations which rapidly transform your mind, energetic and emotional state and are super empowering. I often describe these to clients as ‘inner rituals’ which are just absolutely essential for the modern women to keep themselves fresh and baggage free as they walk through life. Depending on what you are dealing with in life at any particular time, you can use specific Kriyas for specific purposes. This might be transforming long held patterns of negativity, or rapidly generating energy for an upcoming event. They are phenomenally powerful and my clients love them because they are so much more dynamic than other meditations. They really give your mind something to do and can be incredibly powerful teachings in themselves. I had a client recently say to me, “For my whole life, everyone has always told me I needed to let go, but no one could ever show me how to do it until now.” That really sums up how powerful this type of meditation is. They are complete teachings in themselves.

THE STARTING LINE Of course it’s easy to get carried away in the sexy Kriya meditations, buy Kriyas are just one reason that more and more people are turning to meditation. When I work with clients, I will typically start them off with practices to generate calm and develop a sense of control and purpose in life, and once that is established, we transition into practices that are more dynamic and empowering. I am quite deliberate about the sequence that we work with, because it is easy to become destabilized with the wrong practice if you don’t have a stable foundation to build on first - kind of like building a house! One of the most rewarding achievments I see my clients make is when they begin to take what they learn and apply it to daily life through mindful living practices. And that is really what mindfulness is all about . . . becoming aware of how you are so that you can choose how you want to be and begin to show up as your authentic self in your own life! It really is a complete approach to growth and self development.

HOT TIPS • Ensure you select a practice that balances your state of mind otherwise you will be fighting against it.

• Set SMART goals for your long term meditation practice and know what you want to achieve by when.

• Nail the foundation concepts like breath work and the ‘observing self’ so you can get onto the fun stuff!

FITNESS

MAKEOVER PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHELLI WRIGHT

Sweat smarter with these timeless workout tips that will have you rocking your summer body all year round. Jenna Rigby, GlamFIT Studios Coach and Weight Loss Mindset Specialist, has shaped up A-listers and has the ultimate tips to get fit, whether you’re new to working out or a dedicated gym junkie.

1 2 3 RECTANGLE A.K.A. BANANA A rectangle is a straight up and down body type where your measurements are usually the same in all areas. Women with this body type often strive to create curves that don’t naturally occur.

THE BEST EXERCISES

“To enhance and create curves, dedicate particular days of exercise to the specific body parts you want to enhance. For example, to build a booty you need to focus on building muscle through glute exercises such as squats. When muscle needs to be created, weighted exercises such as deadlifts and weighted lunges will help you build those areas quicker.”

TRIANGLE A.K.A. PEAR

INVERTED TRIANGLE A.K.A. PEAR

Triangle is one of the most common body types, your shoulders and bust are narrower than your hips and you tend to have slim arms.

If your shoulders and bust are larger than your relatively narrow hips, you have what’s known as an inverted triangle and are often seen as ‘top heavy’.

THE BEST EXERCISES

THE BEST EXERCISES

“To begin with, focus on fat burn around the stubborn areas - this can be achieved through HIIT-style workouts which keep you in the fatburning zone the longest. Keep each workout varied and focused on exercising the whole body evenly. And don’t forget those beautiful arms! They’re already slim so perfect to get toned up quickly and look good in those sleeveless dresses.”

“Posture is key in enhancing this body type. Try pairing up chest and back day to provide strength in these areas and help to elevate your posture. My favourite chest exercise has to be pressups, and lateral pulldown and hyper back extension are great for the back.”

4 5 6 DIAMOND

HOURGLASS

ATHLETIC

If you have broader hips than shoulders, a narrow bust, and a fuller waistline, you have what’s called a diamond body shape. With this, you may carry a little more weight in your upper legs.

Often the most desired body type, your buttocks and bust are well-balanced, and the waist is also defined. Your body is generally in proportion throughout.

If you’re naturally muscular but not particularly curvy, you have an athletic body type - your shoulder and hip measurements are about the same. Your waist is narrower than your shoulder and hips, but it isn’t overly defined and looks more straight up and down.

THE BEST EXERCISES

THE BEST EXERCISES

THE BEST EXERCISES

“Start by defining your legs - running and uphill walking will help create that definition. This body type also often has a naturally flat stomach so HIIT training works well to maximize fat-burn in this area and show off your best features. My favourite stomach burners have to be bicycles and lying leg raises.”

“Your workouts need to be evenly balanced amongst all body areas to avoid losing those curves. Starting with cardio and moving onto a full-body circuit routine is the best way to burn fat evenly. Circuit classes, CrossFit, and dance often work well for these body types.”

49 | RETREATMAG.COM

“This body type is perfect for weight training and muscle definition can easily be achieved to create curves in all the right places. Weighted squats and deadlifts compound exercises will help build the lower body curves and supersets on the biceps and triceps (bicep curls and tricep pull-downs) will provide arms envied by many.”

FORWARD Written by Aaron Royce

Expert travellers know the importance of a capsule wardrobe—a range of versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched for virtually any occasion—when traversing the globe. What many forget, however, is that a capsule wardrobe can also apply to your shoes. Though everyone can appreciate a wide variety of colourful footwear, you won’t instantly reach for those five-inch stilettos when packing for your next flight. If you’re ever in doubt of what shoes to bring when you’re packing for a trip, look no further—these are the most versatile pairs that are both functional and stylish for any environment, give or take a pair. Use these as inspiration for the shoes to pack—or buy— for your next vacay, day trip, or any occasion that requires an outfit change.

SPORTY SNEAKERS Whether they’re for exercise or the airport, a pair of athletic sneakers are essential for every traveller. This style’s foam soles are comfortable while providing the stability you need if you’re rushing to your gate—or anywhere, for that matter. NIKE, Flyknit sneakers, $160

SLEEK SANDLES Sleek Sandals – In any warm-weather season—or country—a pair of sturdy sandals with an ankle strap are a must. They’re easy to walk in and will keep your feet secure, whether you’re traversing a serene beach or city streets. SAINT LAURENT, leather sandals, $645

VERSATILE HEELS There are bound to be parties and formal occasions on holidays, so you’ll need a versatile set of heels. A lightweight, medium-heeled pair in a neutral tone will elevate all of your looks—and are fit for any event. ALAÏA, suede pumps, $1,120

CHIC SNEAKERS As important as athletic sneakers are, a pair of stylish sneakers are equally so. If you need to dress down (while staying well-dressed), pack a pair of leather or suede sneakers before your next trip. They’ll ensure all of your casual ensembles stay chic, without sacrificing comfort. VALENTINO, two-tone leather sneakers, $695

HOUSE SLIPPERS There’s nothing like slippers or slides to bring a dose of relaxation to your vacation. After all, everyone needs a comfy pair of shoes to wear around your hotel or Airbnb. Whether you’re lounging poolside or simply want casual footwear to don after a day out, some canvas, rubber or suede slip-ons are a travel must-have. GUCCI, canvas platform sandals, $595

ANKLE BOOTS For those cold-weather trips, you’ll need a pair of sturdy ankle boots to stay sleek and warm. A simple leather style will do the trick, and make any look instantly sharper. AEYDE, leather Chelsea boots, $365

WARDROBE Written by Aaron Royce Pack these key items in your carry-on for your next vacation trip. They’re all you’ll need for outfits that will look breezy and beautiful anywhere!

60 | RETREATMAG.COM

BEACH THE WARDROBE

BLOUSE ALTUZARRA, crepe blouse, $895

For the beach, you’ll want to beat the heat in looks that are sun-friendly and simple. Throw on your sandals with a cover-up, and you’re good to go! If you want to go to the beach without taking a swim in the ocean, try wearing shorts with a T-shirt instead.

LUNCH For a lovely afternoon lunch, pair your blouse with jeans and sandals for an easy outfit. If you want to dress up the outfit, accessorize with a belt or necklace. If the setting is less casual, wear your blouse and skirt, add a necklace and sandals, and you’ve got a darling lunch look.

T-SHIRT SAINT LAURENT, cotton T-shirt, $420

NECKLACE LAURA LOMBARDI, gold-plated necklace, $110

SHORTS ISABEL MARANT ÉTOILE, cotton shorts, $360

BELT FRAME, leather belt, $170

COVER-UP YVONNE S, maxi dress, $591

POOLSIDE There’s nothing as relaxing as a dip in the pool—or lounging poolside with a cocktail! Just like at the beach, your cover-up and sandals should do the trick here—and you can swap this set out for a T-shirt with shorts. However, if you’re purely going by the poolside to lounge under club umbrellas and sip cocktails, a slightly dressier ensemble is in order. Pair your T-shirt with your skirt, or blouse with your shorts, and add sneakers or sandals for a pool-perfect look. You can even swap those tops for your beach cover-up if you want a lighter outfit.

SHOPPING Shopping is one of the best parts of taking a vacation—and you’ll need to dress the part! Pair your shorts or jeans with a T-shirt, then add sneakers for comfort. If you’re going to a destination where the shopping scene is extra hot, wear sandals instead of sneakers, pick a T-shirt over a blouse, and definitely wear shorts instead of jeans.

DRINKS Sunset drinks before dinner—or on their own— are a favorite pastime of ours! To dress up for drinks, wear a skirt with a blouse and your trusty sandals. If the bar setting is more casual, wear jeans instead. Add your necklace for a pop of bling, and you’re all set.

JEANS RE/DONE, straight-leg jeans, $275

DINNER

SKIRT LOVESHACKFANCY, tiered skirt, $295

SNEAKERS THE ROW, slip-on sneakers, $760

SANDALS

PORTE & PAIRE, leather sandals, $230

Dinner is usually the most formal out of all your vacation occasions—but even in the most casual tropical destinations, we’ve got you covered. A blouse with a skirt and sandals, similar to lunch, will work with minimal effort all on its own. However, if you’re feeling dressier, we’ve got a fun trick! Wear your cover-up, but belt it and add your necklace to make it instantly dressier and more flattering. You can even wrap your necklace around your wrist as an instant bracelet if you want to change up your look!

From seamless bikinis to weightless cotton fabrics and moisture wicking technology, there’s a go-to type of underwear for everyone. Influenced by notable pop culture moments and the evolving fashion industry, underwear styles have taken huge leaps throughout the years.

1 9 2 0 s: Creating flexible fits was vital for women’s undergarments. An all-in-one revolutionary undergarment style called stepins were introduced. Similar to the modern-day romper, step-ins are a one-piece undergarment that combine a camisole and bloomers, high-waisted loose cotton underpants.

1 9 3 0 s - 1 9 4 0 s: Functionality was the dominant factor for men when selecting underwear during this era, while women focused on style. For colder months, union suits, similar to the modern-day “onesie,” evolved from the ones that emerged in the 1800s to provide both men and women an extra layer of warmth. Then, a new type of underwear inspired by an iconic postcard of a model donning a bikini-style bathing suit broke through for men: the classic cotton briefs. These legless, cotton briefs, featured Y-fronts to allow better movement and all-day support. On the other hand, tight fitting corsets or girdles and decorative lingerie were popular among many women as they embraced shapewear, pulling inspiration from retro pin-up models.

1 9 6 0 s - 1 9 7 0 s: COSABELLA, Never Say Never Minikini stretchlace briefs, $40

DORA LARSEN, Maria lace and stretch-tulle briefs, $59

ELSE, Bare lacetrimmed stretch-tulle soft-cup bra, $132

Women continued to celebrate their bodies and personal styles, hence the game-changing bikini and thong. Named after two-piece swimsuits, the bikini featured a moderate rise and coverage to offer the ultimate comfort and purchasing a pair that matched the bra became the epitome of counterculture fashion. As pin-up models and calendar girls turned into runway models, thongs entered the scene eliminating panty lines while offering a higher cut to reveal more hip and thigh.

Add some sturdy boots and a dose of glam accessories—we’re partial to royalty-worthy crystals—and you’re ready for a UK adventure. Check out the best pieces below to get the London look!

ALL-SEASON JACKET A simple jacket with edge, that can go with everything, is essential for a New York wardrobe. As such, a classic leather biker jacket is a staple! For best results, pair with some sleek aviators and a Gregory’s Coffee cold brew. DEADWOOD, leather biker jacket, $420

MIDI SKIRT

STAPLE TOP A plain white tee is great—but a black one is better. New York women love both, of course, but many can be seen in a black iteration year-round. And why not? It can be worn with everything from a blazer to the most beat-up leather jacket, making any outfit instantly chic. BASSIKE, cottonjersey top, $160

Though New Yorkers prefer neutrals, muted colors work just as well. Maroon and washed blues are particular favorites, as they can simply elevate a look without adding a major punch of color. A midi skirt in this kind of hue is perfect for mid-season dressing, as well as transitions from the office to a girl’s night out. ANINE BING, silk-satin midi skirt, $250

NEW YORK

New York, New York! It’s the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, as they say. Aside from the fascinating history, landmarks and TV and film background, New York City has a rich background in fashion. Though it’s known for New York Fashion Week, the city’s slate of year-round fashion events and features in shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl has made it the U.S.’s unmistakable fashion capital. As such, it’s natural that a stereotype of how New Yorkers dress has emerged— the jaded, coffee-drinking busybody, donned in all-black— but it’s one they’ve fully embraced and made their own. A range of sharp casual and dressy pieces (that are versatile in every sense of the word, from seasons to occasions) are the norm for New York girls—but what else would we expect from the city that never sleeps? See signature staples below to get the true NYC look.

SEXY DRESS New York girls dress for year-round occasions, and what’s more transitional than an LBD? However, to nail the New York vibe, you’ll need a dress that’s both chic and detailed—and has a shock factor. Enter slinky styles like Dion Lee’s latest, which can be effortlessly worn from cocktails to fashion shows. Dress it up with earrings or any statement accessory, plus your favorite strappy sandals or pointed-toe pumps, and you’ve got an instant outfit. DION LEE, ribbed midi dress, $690

LIVED-IN JEANS They say you aren’t a real New Yorker until you’ve lived in the Big Apple for 10 years. To fast-track that timeline, try a pair of faded, heavily-washed jeans that look like you’ve had them forever—even if they’re brand-new. These casual bottoms are a must, and are perfect for any day when you need to dress down. ALEXANDER WANG, straight-leg jeans, $325

BASIC BELT VERSATILE EARRINGS Though the style varies, everyone in New York needs a pair of hoops. No matter the metal, width or texture, New York girls wear their hoops with everything. A pair of Jennifer Fisher’s cult-favorites will bring any look an instant dose of attitude. JENNIFER FISHER, hoop earrings, $350

SHARP SUNGLASSES As we’ve mentioned, nothing makes an outfit look cooler than a pair of fierce sunglasses. In the Empire State, there’s no exception: sunnies are a must. A sleek set of D-frames will carry your wardrobe from winter to summer with the ease of any NYC native.

Transitional accessories are also essential to an NYC wardrobe. Belts can instantly dress up a casual tee and jeans, add detail to a more formal outfit, or be worn with a dress to create a cinched look. No matter the New York weather, having a neutral model that can be worn from spring to winter is essential. ISABEL MARANT, leather belt, $135

GIVENCHY, acetate sunglasses, $295

Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown

BADASS BOOTS Every New York girl has at least one pair of ankle boots in her closet—if not more. They’ll go with everything from miniskirts to maxis—not to mention the perfect solution if you’re overdue for a pedicure. A pair of sharp leather boots by New York-based brands, like Philip Lim, will carry you from Tribeca’s sleek boutiques to the coolest art galleries in Brooklyn all year round. 3.1 PHILLIP LIM, leather ankle boots, $525

ALL-OCCASIONS BAG New York is the city that never sleeps, so bags have to be ready for all occasions at all times. A satchel you can carry from work to parties to afterparties—or at least from Boom Boom Room to the boardroom—will make every outfit scream “NYC.” Try a model with some classic embellishments or embossments pattern to make it more unique to your style. TOM FORD, leather tote, $3,550 73 | RETREATMAG.COM

LITTLE BLACK DRESS Since Audrey Hepburn’s Givenchy number in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, it’s obvious that French fashion is in a league of its own. The LBD is essential to women’s wardrobes everywhere—especially in Paris. What’s more effortless, chic and glamorous than a simple black dress? If there’s one style takeaway from Parisian fashion, it’s this: invest in a little black dress. Your closet will thank you, we promise! ALAÏA, stretch-knit midi dress, $2,500

ROMANTIC BLOUSE A romantic blouse is nothing short of Parisian style perfection—especially in the city of love! Lace, eyelets, ruffles or collar details are all fair game for this staple piece. Typically in white cotton or silk, they’ll add texture and drama to every outfit. Try pairing one with the aforementioned trousers, or any bottom, for an easy French-girl look. JASON WU, oversized poplin shirt, $325

PARIS

Bonjour! Paris isn’t just one of the world’s most romantic cities, but one of its’ most stylish as well. In addition to being the “city of lights,” it’s also the city of perfectly chic style. There’s just something about the way Parisians dress that’s effortless and curated all at once—and we can’t get enough of it! From staples like a slim trouser, versatile crossbody and the perfect pumps that go with everything, there’s plenty to love about the Parisian fashion set’s favourite pieces. The best part? They’re all wardrobe staples that instantly upgrade any look—and that you can wear forever.

TAILORED PANTS Add a pair of pants to your wardrobe that goes with everything, like creased trousers in black or navy. French girls wear these with everything, and it’s easy to see why. Whether it’s a plain tee or a wildly textured blouse, everything looks sharper with this versatile tailored piece. ADAM LIPPES, stretch-crepe flared pants, $590

SHARP SKIRT A classic skirt that’s versatile and feminine will sharpen any outfit. Pair it with a feminine blouse, tee, or any kind of top—just like tailored trousers, this is another staple for Parisian women’s wardrobes. We recommend a versatile style in navy or black that you can wear year-round. HELMUT LANG, pleated jersey midi skirt, $395

BRILLIANT BRACELETS One area that brings forth a little more maximalism in Paris is gemstones—and really, who can resist a little sparkle? Crystals, diamonds, and everything in between will always look elegant and glamourous. Whether it’s a cuff, slide or bangle, any bracelet that puts sparkly stones front and centre is perfectly Parisian. KENENTH JAY LANE, cubic zirconia bracelet, $130

GOLD EARRINGS

PEARL NECKLACE

Jewelry for Parisians is usually pretty subtle; after all, not much is worn around the face except mascara and red lipstick! However, a simple gold earring in a geometric shape adds extra detail that elevates even the most understated outfits. Hoops or oblong drops, typically in gold, have proven to be the most popular among Parisian fashionistas. Add a similar style to your next WFH or going-out outfit for Paris-worthy style.

Ever since Coco Chanel herself wore layers of pearls in the 1930s, this jewellery staple has never gone out of style. Thanks to their sophisticated look, pearls are equally as chic with an LBD as your most worn-out tee and jeans. Add layered or single strands to your next look for a dose of Parisian chic!

LAURA LOMBARDI, gold-plated hoop earrings, $90

SLEEK SUNNIES Sunglasses are everyone’s favourite summer staple, especially in Paris. What adds more mystery to a look than a pair of chic sunnies? Try a minimalist or cat-eye style to channel Parisian cool wherever you go.

ALESSANDRA RICH, faux pearl necklace, $380

VALENTINO, cat-eye acetate sunglasses, $390

Le Bristol Paris

PERFECT PUMPS

TONAL CROSSBODY Bags are one of the few areas where French-girl style gets subverted. Everyone’s partial to a classic black Chanel, but many wear styles that are more colourful, embellished or textured. Our recommendation? Find a softer, slightly-textured crossbody in a muted hue that will complement any look. SAINT LAURENT, crinkled leather shoulder bag, $2,290 75 | RETREATMAG.COM

Parisians are the picture of elegance, and what’s more elegant than a pump? A versatile pump, to be precise—that magical shoe that both dresses up and goes with everything in your closet. Whether it’s leather, lace or suede, quality black pumps are a must-have for Parisian style setters. A simple, pointed-toe pair will be your new favourites—and literally, elevate any outfit. STRIKING SANDALS In Rio, your shoes have to have a ‘wow factor’ too! Metallic styles are a versatile way to add texture and shine to an outfit without going overboard. ST MORITZ

St. Moritz is one of the world’s most luxurious getaways, and it’s easy to see why. From the resort town’s five-star restaurants to its infamous croquet matches on frozen lakes, this is the destination to see and be seen. Extravagance is the name of the game, so be prepared to go all-out with designer jewels and at least a few fabulous coats. Though it’s celebrity-central, St. Moritz is no Hollywood—see its Swiss Alps location—so be equally prepared for the cold temps and mountain activities as much as a champagne luncheon. Finally, make sure your attire is both chic and stylish; St. Moritz visitors are on top of the latest fashion trends, but nobody likes a show-off during, say, a night at the orchestra—especially the visiting royals. Enjoy!

STANDOUT SKIRT You can’t forget a maxi skirt that’s chic and winter-ready! This slimming number by Alaïa is timeless and trendy, ensuring you’ll fit right in with the stylish St. Moritz set. SNOW BOOTS Though you’ll want some fabulous heels for your St. Moritz trip, don’t forget a study-but-stylish pair of snow boots. Everyone can agree practicality is important in the outdoors. MOON BOOT, faux fur-trimmed snow boots, $210

PROPER PANTS

DIAMONDS

Sharp style is all the rage at St. Moritz. A pair of sleek pants is a versatile staple you’ll want in your suitcase to wear anywhere! Try a pair in wool (or an equally winter-proof material) to stay chic and cozy the whole resort season.

WEATHERPROOF GLOVES Warmth is key for the chilly weather at St. Moritz, so don’t pack too light! There has never been a better time to turn your living spaces into retreats of calm, comfort and well-being. A prime area of focus for many homeowners has been their bathrooms, which are now being converted into spa-like havens of self-care, instead of just functional spaces. At the same time, many are adding features that aim for better cleanliness, sustainability and multigenerational living. “In terms of design, I think people are seeing their living spaces as their refuges - sanctuaries where they’re safe and comforted,” notes architect Ryan Leidner. “As the

outside world becomes less touchable, I can see a great desire for the materials, textures and objects within our homes to have more of a tactile quality that invites us to use them. And I can see people getting more creative and interested in ways to bring the outside in, possibly re-imagining their living spaces as indoor gardens and landscapes.” If “your own private spa” sounds like the perfect place for your family to re-energize and rejuvenate from the cares of each day, here are ideas to turn your bathroom into a personal home spa.

Add an extra-deep soaking tub. Gone are the days when a bath meant scrunching your limbs into a cramped basin of water and trying to stay warm. Today’s roomy bathtubs are designed to let you stretch out and relax, fully immersed, in a soothing surround of hydrotherapeutic luxury.

2TWO

Install a walk-in shower and linear drain. The most progressive shower configurations are ergonomically constructed with sleek, curb-free, ADAcompliant entries, so family members need not step in and out, but merely walk in. For more, visit QuickDrainUSA.com.

3THREE Hotel Esencia, Tulum, Mexico

Invest in voice-activated smart features. With a few technology and equipment upgrades, Alexa, Siri or Google Home can now run your bath at your temperature of choice, power up your shower, light up your mirror, warm your toilet seat, diffuse your favourite fragrance, play all your top tunes and perform a number of other functions aimed at customizing your home spa experience and boosting its luxury level.

4FOUR

Incorporate a steam shower. Equipment added right into your shower stall can pipe in fresh steam customized by temperature and duration. “Bathing” in the vapor can feel wonderfully soothing and hydrating, and it’s said to produce health benefits ranging from better circulation and sinus drainage to clearer skin and rejuvenation of tired muscles.

5FIVE

Treat yourself to a towel warmer. Those living in cold climates may especially appreciate the luxury of having a warm, cosy towel in which to snuggle up after a relaxing bath or shower. These handy pieces of hardware are relatively easy to install and can be well worth the investment in terms of comfort.

MAKE YOUR ESCAPE C R E AT E A P R I VAT E B A C K YA R D R E T R E AT

Modern landscaping and hardscaping offer limitless possibilities, so you can find the right solution to complement the way you live and your personal tastes. Whether you want a stylish lounge area for entertaining, a green-filled hideaway for connecting with nature, or a clean, minimal space for family fun and games, you can make it happen using a combination of pavers, walls, fire pits or even full outdoor kitchens. First, spend a little time with your dream, narrowing down what type of outdoor space you really want. What do you most want to do in your outdoor space, and what style best expresses your vision and personality?

Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas

Relaxed entertaining centre Maybe your dream sanctuary is a cosy fire pit surrounded by lounge seating to create a comfortable outdoor living room family and guests can enjoy day or night. Or perhaps you want to dazzle guests with your culinary skills at a complete outdoor kitchen - including fun extras like a smoker, wine cooler or brick pizza oven.

Cosy natural retreat Create a space for unwinding from the week’s stresses. Could you arrange a trellis or pergola bursting with plants and flowers to set your retreat apart from the rest of the yard? You could install relaxing hammocks or a serene fountain to complete your oasis and choose hardscaping elements to work hand in hand with your favourite natural elements.

Eye-catching extension of your living space Whatever plans you have for hardscapes, furnishings, appliances and more, consider the overall ambiance you want to create. Consider not only the natural environment, but what style best complements your home’s aesthetic.

Focus on family fun Maybe your dream is to add outdoor recreation areas for you and your family. Consider making space for giant stacking blocks, life-size checkers or chess, cornhole or ring toss. How about a mini hedge maze or paver labyrinth? Then use the existing feel of your home’s exterior as the basis for your stylistic direction. Homeowners and outdoor designers can work together to mix and match a variety of textures, colours and styles to create an outdoor space that suits any landscape - creating an extension of your home to make all your summer dreams come true. NEW YEAR,

NEW YOU! Cheers to the best bottles of bubbles just in time for the holidays. W R I T T E N B Y CAR OL E M AC @ CAR O L E . M AC CAR O L E M AC . CO M

“ TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING IS BAD, BUT TOO MUCH CHAMPAGNE IS JUST RIGHT.” - Mark Twain

2020 has been rough, so let’s start the New Year with a bang! The best way I know how to do this is to open a bottle of festive bubbles and begin 2021 with fresh eyes. And why not saber your bottle? It’s a fun way to do away with 2020 and start the New Year right. Here are four of my favourite bottles of bubbles at Wine4Food.com:

CHRISTIAN BUSIN BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE

CAVE DE RIBEAUVILLÉ CRÉMANT D’ALSACE We love this Crémant d’Alsace with pinot noir grapes for a lovely rich mouthfeel balanced by the perfect amount of tart. You’ll love the fresh flavours of red and green apple. Be careful, this one goes down fast.

What’s not to love about Champagne? This beauty comes from the Grand Cru appellation of Verzenay in France, made lovingly by a small grower. You can expect delicate bubbles, brioche aromas, and flavours of strawberries and cream. Go on, drink Champagne. You’re with it.

FABIANO ‘SESTIERE CASTELLO 4537’ PROSECCO

ROBERTO NEGRI ‘LA GIARA’ LAMBRUSCO Why don’t you try something new this New Year’s Eve? Enter Lambrusco. This fruit-forward, very fun RED bubbly is from Italy. It’s also very affordable and spices up any New Year’s Eve with its semi-sweet notes of plum and licorice. Don’t saber this one, it stains.

If you are hosting or attending a New Year’s Eve gathering of any kind, this is your go-to bottle. It’s an affordable crowd pleaser. Its young juicy bubbles are fun, and you’ll be delighted by the pear and citrus finish.

GARDEN TO GLASS Nothing says summer better than sipping a fresh, seasonal cocktail while you relax with family or a few friends. And what do you need to craft the perfect warm-weather cocktail? Follow two simple steps: 1. SELECT THE PERFECT FOUNDATION Start with a versatile base spirit that can serve as the star of your drink - one that will complement the local, seasonal ingredients you will add to the cocktail.

Consider supporting local growers by visiting a nearby farmer’s market or explore growing some of your own ingredients at home. For an easy way to always have fresh ingredients on hand, consider signing up for a local CSA box - you’ll always have new produce to experiment with in cocktails. Ingredients that are perfect for making cocktails include fruits such as berries and melons, plus fresh herbs like mint, thyme and basil.
