Face Up TH E ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SPF Written by Hannah Morrison Whether on vacation or enjoying time at home, protecting your skin from UV rays is a top beauty priority. Adding SPF to your daily skin-care routine can help protect against fine lines, uneven skin tones, hyperpigmentation and skin cancer. Because we love spending time outdoors, choosing the right SPF is a simple way to ensure our skin’s protected from harmful UV rays. Put on these products daily to keep your skin smooth and glowing.

SPF Cheat Sheet

IS APPLYING SUNSCREEN BEFORE I LEAVE THE HOUSE ENOUGH TO PROTECT ME THE WHOLE DAY? Certainly; a great first step. If just staying in the office all day, then this might suffice. I would recommend reapplying if entering the sun at lunchtime for example, or if sweating during the day for any reason. Most glass offers minimal UV protection. Don’t forget, driving is the equivalent of being outside. IF I’M INDOORS I DON’T NEED TO APPLY SUNSCREEN. The recommendation is to apply each day, all year round. You would be surprised how much UV exposure you may have sitting near a window etc. UV rays will also reflect off many surfaces in an office; indirect exposure can be significant. I’M WEARING A HAT, DO I STILL NEED SUNSCREEN? CAN I GET SUNBURNT THROUGH MY CLOTHES? Wearing a hat is highly recommended, but depending on where you are, a hat may only protect you from as little as 50% of UV rays. This is due to reflective surfaces, even grass, but especially water and snow. Clothes vary widely in the amount of protection given. A black T-shirt will be equivalent to about SPF 30, whereas a thin white T-shirt may only offer SPF 5. Of course, there is excellent UV-rated clothing available so you can have more confidence in the actual protection being achieved. SPF 30 HAS SIMILAR PROTECTION TO SPF 50. Essentially, SPF 30 will be letting through 1 in 30 UV rays, SPF 50 will let through 1 in 50 to your skin, so nearly half as many. SPF 50 allows for a longer exposure time and gives added security. I WON’T GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D IF I’M ALWAYS WEARING SUNSCREEN. The average person only needs sun exposure for approximately ten minutes, three times per week, on an area of the body such as your face to get enough Vitamin D conversion. It is hard to imagine this not happening in our climate. Sunscreen also only blocks most UVB rays, so some (one in 50 for SPF 50) still hit your skin to help generate Vitamin D. It makes much more sense to use sunscreen all the time and supplement your diet with Vitamin D if needed. Sun damage is real and accumulative.

LIGHT TH E ULTIMATE GUIDE TO L A S E R FACIAL TREAT MENT S

These non-surgical treatments are booming, but what do they really do? We asked Dr Kate Jameson, founder and medical director of Youth Lab, Australia’s leading medical aesthetics clinic specialising in non-surgical aesthetics and skin rejuvenation, to explain which laser does what, along with how best to address common skin issues. Lasers have been used in aesthetic medicine for decades with continued advancement in technology and new indications for treatments. Gone are the days of having a laser treatment and having to hide away for weeks on end with a swollen, red and peeling face. From the original fully ablative (ie removing full layers of skin) CO2 lasers to the game-changer fractionated laser Fraxel, there have since been huge technological advancements that produce immediate results with no downtime. Lasers can treat an extensive number of skin conditions, from skin rejuvenation, skin resurfacing, wrinkle reduction, pigmentation, vascular conditions, scarring, capillaries—all while ensuring your skin remains intact and healthy during the process. Because lasers are so versatile and vary in so many ways on how they affect the skin, it can be hard to know where to begin when researching a treatment. Here is a simple guide on some of the most popular laser treatments and what common skin concerns they treat.

T HE T REAT MENT

Clear V Vascular Laser

T HE T R E AT M E N T

Ablative Fractional Resurfacing (HALO Hybrid Fractional Laser)

What is it?

What is it?

Sciton Clear V Vascular Laser, the most powerful and advanced vascular laser available. Clear V laser vein removal is an effective way to treat unwanted capillaries, or “broken vessels”, “spider veins” and other stubborn vessels located on the face and body, resulting in clear, even and bright, healthy-looking skin.

The Halo Laser is the world’s first in fractional resurfacing. Using both ablative (removing layers of skin) and nonablative (keeping the skin surface intact), it is a game-changer for sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, sunspots and scarring. The Halo glow is evident within days with results continuing for many months after treatment.

How does it work? Vascular lasers treat conditions associated with broken or abnormal blood vessels by very selectively targeting haemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells. The Clear V emits a unique, high-power laser beam that is absorbed by the targeted blood vessels without affecting the surrounding tissues. The Clear V laser uses a 1064nm wavelength and has been designed to make treatments easy, consistent and comfortable for providers and patients. Does it hurt? With each pulse of the laser, a small pinprick and mild heat will be experienced; smaller vessels can be almost painless, while larger vessels will have a deeper hot flick or hot “zip” feel. This sensation only lasts for the pulse and subsides immediately. In some cases, vessels can immediately appear to disappear; however, it does require two to six weeks to fully break down and eventually clear away. The Clear V treatment is suitable for all skin types and is non-invasive, resulting in little to no downtime post-procedure. How many treatments? Achieved results can last from 6-18 months, in some cases permanently; however, it varies according to each individual circumstance. Maintenance treatments are recommended in 3-12 month intervals or as needed. Managing your specific triggers can help maintain results; additionally, wearing SPF daily, including good quality topical vitamin C in your skincare routine, and avoiding aggressive over-exfoliation will also help maintain results.

RETREATMAG.COM | 37

How does it work? The Halo uses two wavelengths of laser light to resurface the skin at a superficial level and penetrate deeply to stimulate collagen production and target deep sun damage. Using an ablative wavelength to remove damaged skin cells from the surface allows an accelerated healing time through these microchannels. With older traditional fractionated lasers, healing took at least seven days and quite uncomfortable. With Halo, the downtime can be tailored to your schedule, and by day five many are already showing signs of glowing and healthier skin. It is used on all skin types and in higher-risk skin settings can be modified for safety. Does it hurt? Yes and no. Your practitioner will apply topical numbing cream to minimise the pain. The Halo has inbuilt cooling systems and skin temperature control to ensure safety and comfort throughout the session. It gives a heat sensation that can remain post-treatment but can be minimised by cooling masks and cool air. There can be some post-treatment discomfort such as swelling, redness, tenderness and dryness, which is minimised by the correct use of your aftercare products. How many treatments? Generally, one treatment is all that is needed for the Halo Glow. Those with more severe skin conditions such as poor skin texture, deep wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and scarring may require a course of three treatments spaced four-to-six weeks apart. Halo is perfect to do each year as part of your maintenance anti-ageing regime.

THE TR E ATMENT

T HE T R E AT M E N T

Clear Silk Non-ablative skin rejuvenation

Fully Ablative Skin Resurfacing (eg CO2 or Erbium Laser) What is it?

What is it? The Clear Silk is the go-to laser for clear skin, reduced wrinkles and overall luminosity. This non-ablative treatment is gentle and, with regular treatments, can result in a noticeable decrease in fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Clear silk can also treat pigmentation, scarring, redness and gives an overall skin revitalisation How does it work? The Clear Silk uses a non-ablative 1064nm laser, delivering a micropulse of laser energy to gently heat the skin in the dermal layers. This stimulates fibroblast cells to simulate the skin’s repair system and in turn produce more collagen and elastin. By depositing heat deep within the skin, the surface of the skin and surrounding tissues are protected from damage, meaning less downtime and less risk than more intense laser treatments. Deep heating of the skin also increases oxygen supply to the cells, resulting in natural rejuvenation. Does it hurt? Not at all. The Clear Silk Laser facial is comfortable and is often reported as feeling like warm raindrops over the face. There is no downtime or discomfort after the treatment also, and you can return to your normal routine, including going out in the sun and exercising, immediately afterwards. How many treatments? A course of treatments is recommended for the best results, usually every two weeks for six treatments. For severely sun-damaged skin, persistent redness, deeper scars and wrinkles, multiple treatments may be required.

Fully ablative lasers are the most aggressive, and most effective, treatments for wrinkles, sun damage and scarring. They are not for the faint-hearted though and can come with considerable downtime and are at higher risk. Fully ablative lasers include Carbon dioxide (CO2) and Erbium gas lasers. These are powerful lasers used in all aspects of laser medicine and can be used to cut and vaporise the tissue. They are used in surgery to cut the skin as well as deep laser resurfacing. How does it work? Erbium and CO2 release a long wavelength of light. They both have a peak absorption of water in the skin, which means that they remove all of the skin with high concentrations of water (eg superficial skin). They are used to ablate the skin and remove damaged superficial skin at the surface. They can also penetrate deeper to stimulate collagen formation and are used for skin rejuvenation and resurfacing for wrinkles, scars and textural problems. Does it hurt? In simple terms, yes. However, anaesthetic is often used (sometimes general anaesthetic for intensive treatments). The recovery can be prolonged with open oozing wounds on the skin, followed by raw skin, redness and dryness as the skin regenerates. Residual redness and sensitivity can last for a few months, but the results are worth the long recovery. How many treatments? Generally, only one treatment is needed with these intensive treatments.

SHAPE Shifter

From curvier frames to athletic body types, we’re helping to make sense of the endless swimwear options. After all, there’s no such thing as a “beach body” or “bikini body”, as every woman is gifted with a wonderful figure; it’s just a matter of knowing what will flatter your shape the most. We asked swimwear brand, Amoena, tips on finding the perfect swimsuit to suit your body shape, as feeling confident and comfortable is key to helping you relax while on your holidays.

PHOTOGRAPHED BY IRVIN RIVERA

X Shape

V Shape

You are evenly proportioned with a narrow waist. Your body shape is more commonly referred to as an hourglass.

If you have wide shoulders, a full bust, narrow hips and waist and slender legs, you are probably a V-body shape—also referred to as an inverted triangle.

Almost any swimsuit style will work for you, particularly designs that emphasize your waist and can give your bust sufficient support. You could consider highlighting your hourglass figure even more with a swim dress or a bikini that has a high waist—both are particularly flattering.

To even things out a bit, focus on your bottom half. When you accentuate your hips with patterns, bold colours or ruffles, you make them look a little wider and more balanced with your shoulders. Bikini bottoms, which are tied at the sides, and swim dresses could look great on you too.

O SHAPE

A SHAPE

If the middle of your body (your waist and chest), is a bit fuller and your legs are quite slim, you are an O shape, also known as an apple.

Your upper body is narrower than your hips and thighs. Some people call this body type a triangle or pear shape.

A one-piece swimsuit will elongate your upper body visually, and design features like vertical stripes, dark colours and slight gathers or draping on the sides could look great on you. A tankini is also a good choice if you are an O body shape. If you like the support of full bra cup coverage, consider a swimsuit or bikini top with wide straps or a tankini with a triangle or halter neck top.

Look for swimsuits and tankinis in bright colours to emphasize your upper body, along with eye-catching patterns or detailing on the top half. If you prefer bikinis the more subtle the better, look for designs in just one colour.

As told to Matthew Dillon Written by Aida M. Toro Model turned brand ambassador turned philanthropist, Samantha Harris already has an impressive resume. Discovered at the early age of 13 after entering the nationwide Girlfriend Model Search, Harris has forged an expansive career within the global fashion industry constantly pushing the ethos of fashion during her career. Having graced the cover of Vogue at just 19 years old, she remains a mainstay in publishing heavyweights and has walked for some of Australia’s greatest designers including Dion Lee, Ellery and Manning Cartell. In addition to modelling, Harris has also held a strong presence in the world of philanthropy as a major ambassador for The Barnardo’s Foundation, The Make a Wish Foundation, World Vision Australia and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). To support her interest in skincare, she also stands as the ambassador for Biologi skincare, Priceline and has partnered with Aveeno. Retreat Magazine had the pleasure of sitting down with Harris to talk about her career, how the pandemic has changed her and on becoming a role model.

How has the pandemic changed the way you view your life and what’s important to you? Being locked down, you appreciate the smaller things in life. I live in Sydney, but all of my family lives in Tweed Heads, which is on the border of New South Wales and Queensland, so I haven’t seen my mum in quite a long time. My husband and I are going down for Christmas and I’m excited to see my mum and my brother. I also think that during the lockdown, you reset and kind of realize what is actually important. It isn’t all about the fancy and shiny things. It’s more about quality time with your family and your loved ones and things like that. How have you adjusted personally to the pandemic and lockdowns in terms of mental and physical health alongside your husband? our modelling career launched after winning Girlfriend Magazine’s modelling competition. What was that experience like? My fondest memory was when I arrived early with my mom and my little brother. I was the first girl there. Looking at all the girls that were there, I was thinking that I was never going to get in. Look at all these beautiful girls, I thought to myself. What makes me different? What makes me special? Looking back at that moment now, I’m so proud. That little girl was so shy and so nervous that I didn’t think I had a chance. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and what I’ve accomplished in life. Not just in modelling, but how much I’ve grown personally. Having a Vogue cover at such a young age is a major moment. How does that cover itself stand the test of time in your mind and what does that mean for you today? Nowadays, I can pinch myself! That was a big moment and any model’s dream. To shoot the cover of Vogue and to be the second Indigenous woman ever to be on Vogue Australia was amazing. I can tell my kids and my kids can tell their kids that.

We just did what we could such as taking the dog for a walk, training in the park or in the apartment and things like that. At times it was tough because no one loves being locked down—it sucks. But when the world started opening up again, we appreciated everything. How do you find your balance in the world of social media? When I started modelling, there was no Instagram or anything like that. Personally, I share what I want to share on social media, such as bits of my personal life and my family because they’re important to me. I’m not going to show everything, I’ll show little bits, but I think it’s more work-related. I’ve been in the fashion eye for a long time, which is why I show a variety of my shoots, highlights and things like that. I don’t take it too seriously because there are a lot of trolls out there. So many people have so many things to say, which is why I take it with a grain of salt. I just continue my life. Social media is not the be-all and end-all.

What does being a role model mean to you? It makes me very proud. When I was in my early 20s, people would say I was a role model, which was still fresh to my ear at that time. I was still very young and a lot of the girls that were looking up to me were similar. At Sydney Fashion Week, they had the first Indigenous runways ever. To see the young models on the runways and to have them look at me and say that I am the reason why they are modelling is amazing. I don’t think of myself as that kind of figure, but for young Aboriginal models to say that I’m the reason why they are modelling is very humbling to know that I provided them with that confidence.

Your ambassadorships with World Vision and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) are very important to you. Why did you choose to get involved with both of these organisations? World Vision has amazing ambassadors worldwide and they do great things in Australia and overseas. What really stood out to me is that the organization goes to Indigenous remote communities. For instance, a couple of years ago, I went to The Kimberley with my mum into these remote communities and you could see firsthand what World Vision was doing. I’ve had a really good partnership with the elders and the ladies in the communities to ask questions such as what resources are needed to assist with continuing their way of life. World Vision is working hand in hand with the Indigenous elders and prominent figures within these communities so they can just live a normal life. I think one of these remote communities just got access to the internet to keep in touch with the rest of Australia. WWF is a great charity and I love animals. With WWF, preserving the planet is also a major initiative. We have to preserve it for future generations and spread awareness of what’s going on such as about the animals in danger of extinction. If I can share the knowledge, I am more than happy to do so. The conversations about representation and body image are relevant nowadays. What does body confidence mean to you? I think body confidence is just being happy within yourself. I saw this thing on Facebook and Instagram that stated that if everyone ate the same, everyone would still look different. It’s important to be happy and comfortable with yourself. I’ve seen how the body changes from age 13 to late 20s. From a woman’s perspective, I think just being proud within yourself and knowing who you are is the best kind of confidence—simply just being happy with who you are. What are your thoughts on the way the media describes women today? Some media creates stories out of absolutely anything. For instance, I went shopping at Woolworths and my husband was carrying the bags home. When I’m walking around, I make the worst facial expressions! And this became a story. I think that there are so many more important things going on in the world than where I’m shopping. Surely… that’s not making news. When you are more secure within yourself, you don’t care if these types of “stories” are published and give you great publicity because all I did was go to the grocery store. There are more important things happening in the world. What are your goals for 2022? Next year, I am hoping there won’t be any lockdowns. I’d love for us to travel freely and just live a normal life. I just want to be able to travel and work. To keep up with Harris and her latest, follow her on Instagram over at @sam_harris

sommeliers from afar. Their food and wine are first class. Then there’s their artisan brews, famed single malts, crisp ciders and high-end gins. Hunter Street is fast becoming Hobart’s premium dining precinct. A stay at the Henry Jones Art Hotel ensures this bounty is a whiff from the doorstep. Understated in style, the restaurant champions a locally sourced a la carte menu with Tasmanian, interstate and Old-World wines. The open kitchen is led by Head Chef Jeff Workman and delivers scents, sights and sounds with a touch of theatre. Seasonal Tasmanian produce is ever the hallmark of this sandstone-enveloped venue. Landscape Restaurant and Grill is the hotel’s signature restaurant, located beside them in a modern, dark space surrounded by the iconic landscape art of John Glover. The venue offers a

premium dining experience, fuelled by the coals of its wood-fired Asado grill. Led by Head Chef Alex Katsman and committed to Tasmania’s finest produce, expect an ever-changing menu. Much of the inspiration for Landscape came from the artworks of John Glover—striking, unforgettable paintings that capture the life and beauty of the young Tasmanian colony in the 19th century. Set against the classic Henry Jones backdrop of heritage architecture and innovative design, the IXL Long Bar is the perfect place to begin or end an evening. An inviting in-house bar, dressed in heritage architecture and home to some of Hobart’s finest cocktail masters, the petite space radiates style and warmth—just add some live jazz tunes. Kimpton Charlotte Square www.kimptoncharlottesquare.com Instagram: @kimptoncharlottesquare

ARRIVE Perched on the edge of a picturesque private garden in the New Town, Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel blends traditional glamour with the Scotland of today. Outside, a classical Georgian exterior stands as an ode to the past while inside, past the lobby, a glass-topped central courtyard is abuzz with activity as travellers unwind over gin and tonics, local professionals do business, and friends toast special occasions. The energy is so fresh and effervescent that guests will want to bottle it and bring it home—but then again, it feels too distinctly Edinburgh to make sense anywhere else. STAY Overlooking one of Edinburgh’s prettiest private garden squares, Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel consists of seven interconnected Georgian townhouses. Outside is where guests will find the New Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s delightfully removed from the city’s tourist hubs. But it’s inside where things get interesting. The newly renovated

interior blends handsome woods, plush fabrics, and rich pops of colour—and, yes, just a touch of tartan—to luxurious effect. And with a magnetic inner courtyard and an acclaimed Middle Eastern restaurant, it’s no wonder the hotel has become a natural meeting point and a sociable heart of modern life. Eclectically styled and cleverly detailed, the bedrooms and suites at Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel celebrate the golden age of travel through curated art, books and miscellanea. Luxurious leather upholstery, residential furniture like bureaus and low-lying desks, cosy extras like robes and yoga mats and innovative technology integration all jive together to turn these spaces into private urban retreats. Maximize time in Edinburgh by opting for one of their spacious suites. Rich design elements and curated art make for an appealing urban sanctuary in the hub of the city. Whether guests lounge around waiting for their night on the town to begin, or stay in and indulge in a bubble bath, there’s no plusher place to relax.

D IN E BABA is a George Street dining destination in its own right. A bold turquoise palette and eye-popping textiles set the scene for what’s to come: contemporary cocktails and inventive cooking that blends Middle Eastern with Scottish influences. Mezze takes centre stage here, but a charcoal grill pulls its weight, too, turning out Scottish lamb, beef, and seafood. Locals, who have been flocking here since the restaurant opened, know the secret to the menu: mix, match, and don’t be shy about sharing. Using the very best produce, the Aizle’s six-course tasting menu is constantly changing to give guests a fleeting snapshot of the season. Aizle also prepares many of the menu elements in-house, escaping the monotony of the mass-produced: from the nutritious live ferment in their sourdough that’s paired with hand-churned butter. The drinks list receives just as much love, with homemade softs, their very own aquavit and aged kombucha going into cocktails and a globetrotting wine list that shines a light on smaller producers. The Garden is the hotel’s central gathering point and a tranquil oasis in the hustle and bustle of the city. EN J OY When guests are looking for a quiet break and a moment to themselves, they retreat to the spa, which offers the full range of relaxing, restorative treatments, from massages to manicures. Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel’s therapists are seasoned in providing a variety of services at various durations, all meant to help guests de-stress, relieve muscle and joint pain and energise. Whether it’s their signature facial—an 80-minute anti-aging regimen that will make the face glow—or a 55-minute seaweed body wrap, all of their treatments incorporate fine Scottish skincare products from brands like La Rue Verte and Ishga. The spa helps guests attain some well-deserved “me time” during their stay in Edinburgh. Their signature packages pair multiple treatments together for the ultimate in relaxation; many also come with lunch, tea or—for a real treat—a glass of Champagne. Throw on a robe and slippers and make a day of it by combining spa treatments with some downtime in the gym, pool, sauna, steam room and relaxation room. No trip is complete without nurturing the body, mind, and soul. If guests are looking to stay fit on the road—or just looking to tick off exercise before tucking in for a long lunch—the hotel’s fitness centre will do the trick. Hotel guests and gym members alike can make use of the Intenza Fitness cardio equipment, Impulse strength stations, free weights, kettlebells and sandbags. There are also TRX stations, a sprint track and a studio space for group classes, including yoga and boot camp. Post-workout, cool off—or warm up—in our indoor pool, steam room and sauna.

Make a backyard staycation plan Put together a gentle schedule with a mixture of activities that your family will enjoy like dining, camping and games. Add a theme for the week, day or evening. A luau theme can be carried through with costumes, food and activities. A sports theme can have everyone in team jerseys and doing sports activities. Use creative names for meals and activities to spice things up. Even if you don’t have a pool, children’s water play misters or sprinklers can help everyone cool off in the backyard (provided your area is not under drought conditions).

Map where activities will occur in the yard A lawn area may be the site of soccer, bocce ball or croquet, but it can also double as an overnight camping zone for the kids in a family tent. The fire pit can be used for roasting hot dogs for lunch or s’mores at night. Crafts, potting plants and eating can happen at a picnic or dining table.

Assess what you have and consider their creative uses Lounge chairs, sports and play equipment can be used for their original purposes, but they can also become part of an amazing obstacle course. The wheelbarrow used for gardening and yard work can become part of a family field day. The playset your children adore can become a fun breakfast spot or reading area.

Spruce up your yard Mow the lawn and trim the bushes. Tidy overgrown areas. Add flowering plants and rearrange planters for visual appeal. Put delicate flowers in pots and out of the way of foot traffic. Now may be the time to add a picnic table, a badminton net or croquet course, planters, patio, grill, fire pit or pergola to your backyard.

Organize for fun Identify zones for different activities. Dining, lounging and reading may be best in shady spots. Sports, family yard games and tossing a ball to your dog may be better on a lawn that can handle rough and tumble play. Hammocks, lawn chairs, swings, picnic blankets and air mattresses can all provide a place for people to sit down and cool off.

Learn about backyard wildlife and nature Ask kids to take an inventory of the many birds, butterflies and other wildlife they see, looking up their species and background. Put up a bird feeder or plant a butterfly garden, as well as potted flowering plants to support birds and pollinators. Add wind chimes, rain collectors or backyard thermometers and wind gauges to help kids observe science in action. (Visit TurfMutt.com for a variety of backyard lesson plans that are free and STEM-aligned.)

Design new games incorporating your green space Hold a nature scavenger hunt that’s both fun, educational and tests your family’s observational skills. Create an outdoor movie theatre by bringing laptops outside or using a projector to show films on a sheet or screen that is hung outside.

Build anticipation Talk about your backyard staycation in advance with your family and review your plans. Count down the days to build excitement about spending time together in your family yard.

Holiday at Home

The best way to get through the season relatively unscathed is to go at it with a plan! The holidays can be an overscheduled, stressful time of year, what with visits and parties, gift-giving and dinners. From what to cook and decorate with to what to wear and gift-giving, putting a plan in place will help you to get it all done with grace.

GETTING YOUR KITCHEN PREPPED AND READY IS KEY Make sure your kitchen is spotless at the start of the holidays. For one thing, you’ll be less stressed about people coming in and witnessing a bit of a mess, but also, you’ll find it easier to put your hands on the gravy boat the very moment you need it. Wipe down all the dishes and glassware, as well as platters and serving dishes and cutlery, to make sure it’s all ready to use. Get rid of extra kitchen clutter. If you tend to use the island as a repository for mail, lunch bags and other detritus the rest of the year, get rid of it! Same with small appliances that you don’t use all the time. You’ll need every bit of counter space you can find. Purge the pantry of any past due items, reorganize what’s left and make sure you have everything you need for your favourite recipes. A mad dash to the store at 7 pm on party night is best avoided! Snacks are an important addition as holiday periods mean lots of people, big and small, milling about claiming to be starving! Stocking up on essentials like water, canned goods, wine, beer, mixes and so on, just makes good sense. Don’t forget napkins, paper towels and toilet paper! Make menu plans for parties and every day, for the entire duration of the holidays. It will save you time and energy in shopping and cooking if you can plan it. This is also a great time to check in with any guests who might be coming by or staying for a few days about food allergies or intolerances that you need to be aware of. If you can cook or prep certain items in advance—cookies and desserts come to mind, as well as casseroles for the freezer—do it! Save yourself time in the kitchen when you’d rather be in the living room, enjoying a glass of holiday cheer.

DECOR MATTERS Decorating the inside of your home for the holidays is an important part of the process and, like the food preparations, needs a little planning to get it right. Go through all your decorations and throw out broken pieces that are simply adding to the clutter. Before you go buy anything else to add to your existing collection, think about a theme or colour scheme that would work inside your home. If you work with a theme, you’ll choose pieces more judiciously and spend less time getting it all coordinated and pleasing to the eye. To change decor from Halloween to Thanksgiving and then on to Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, it’s best to have clearly labelled storage bins for each type of decor so you can switch them quickly and easily. Don’t forget the music, which is so important for setting a festive mood.

CHECK YOUR GIFT LIST… TWICE There is nothing worse than forgetting an important gift, so like Santa, make a list and check it twice. Get your shopping done as far in advance as you can. For one thing, you’ll avoid the crowds and also the possible disappointment of items being out of stock or unavailable. Supply chains are tighter this year, post-pandemic, and it’s not time to add to your stress by having to scramble. The only caveat here is that kids in particular are likely to change their minds about what they want from Santa, so don’t go too early for their items! Have a supply of gift cards or other simple gifts, like wine or chocolates, on hand for the person who gives you one that you weren’t expecting, or in case checking your list twice still doesn’t prevent you from forgetting your boss! Don’t forget wrapping paper, gift bags, tags and tape. You can never have too much of these and classic colours and designs don’t go out of style, so you can hold on to the leftovers for next year.

PLANNING FOR COMPANY Whether just for an evening of cocktails and nibbles or for family staying for a few days during the holidays, it’s important to plan ahead for company. Even if your invitation says “Cocktails at 8”, you should always be prepared for a guest or two who might need to stay the night. Having some extra toothbrushes and paste, a few t-shirts for sleeping and sets of clean sheets and towels, will make a surprise guest easy to manage.

WHAT TO WEAR These days, a lot of you will have pared down your wardrobes for work at home scenarios, but if going out on the town or to friends and family is in the plans for your holidays, you’ll need to look out for what everyone is going to wear. Check what fits, what needs repairs or cleaning and what doesn’t fit and can be donated or thrown out. For yourself, for your kids… Make sure you aren’t stuck panic buying an outfit for your little ones because they outgrew last year’s outfit six months ago!

For a planned stay of a few days, having essentials for your houseguests makes it a smoother event for everyone. Set up where they are going to sleep so it’s as comfortable as can be. Little touches like a few toiletries, guest towels, water bottles and a little sign that tells them what the WIFI password is are all excellent and welcoming details. Make room in closets and dressers for extra coats, boots and clothing by storing some of your items in bins or hanging racks, in the basement or garage, just until everyone goes home again. Check that your first aid kit is stocked and has a supply of allergy medications, cold and flu meds and other over the counter remedies for anything from headaches to heartburn, so you can manage any small incident without having to run to the store. Finally, remember that it is the holiday season and it’s the time to be with loved ones and reflect on the year gone by. Overscheduling and stressing out are the enemies of these joyous moments, so go over your calendar and make sure there’s time earmarked for the little things, like the local tree lighting ceremony, or just a twilight walk in the brisk, wintery air. You’ll be glad you did because some of these little moments are the best memories of all.

5 WAYS TO EXPERIENCE CALIFORNIA’S NAPA VALLEY WINE COUNTRY FROM HOME

Bring a little luxury to your life and experience the joys of your favourite wine regions without ever leaving your home.

Set the mood with music Turn up the music and get ready to relax. Choose your goto wine-tasting playlist or search for one that’s already been created wherever you listen to music. It’s all about what gets you in the wine-tasting mood.

Try a virtual tasting Escape to wine country with a virtual visit to prestigious Napa Valley wineries. For example, Wine.com is hosting “A Toast to Napa Valley”—a free virtual wine-tasting event featuring some of Napa’s most acclaimed wine producers. You can even purchase wine to taste during the session that will be shipped directly to your home or can be sent to a loved one as a holiday gift. This is a great way to share a common experience with friends and family tuning in at the same time, all from the safety of your own home.

Treat yourself to a cinematic getaway Wine and film share a profound link: the ability of a single sip or scene to whisk your senses away to a wholly different time and place. After all: Wine, popcorn and a good movie make for a great time, any night of the week. For inspiration, check out Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Top 10 Greatest Wine Movies of All Time by visiting www.winemag.com.

Get cooking If you were really exploring Napa Valley, you’d be feasting on fresh, local fare for every meal. For your Napa day at home, consider this sublime recipe for grilled New York Steak with Porcini Mushroom Butter from prominent wine country chef Colin Crowley. Whatever you choose to cook or order in from your favourite restaurant, don’t forget to select wines that pair well with your food choices.

Treat yourself to a spa night Before your dream day at home comes to a close, rest and recover with a little spa time. Light a candle, put on a different kind of face mask, pour yourself a glass of Chimney Rock Cabernet and hop into a steaming tub of bubbly water to soothe sore muscles and promote a restful night of sleep—and dream of a day where you can enjoy wine country in person. It’s the perfect cap to your Napa-themed day.

Each Acler piece is developed over a process of 12 months and is subtly redrafted and redraped along the way, allowing the design to take on its form naturally. We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

LAST LOOK Samantha Harris’s Holiday Rules WHERE ARE YOU JETTING OFF TO NEXT? The next place I’ll be jetting off to is Melbourne in January for the Australian Open. I’m pretty excited about it, as I’ve never been, and looking forward to seeing some of the world’s best tennis players. Hopefully, I will get to see Ash Barty. HOW WILL YOU SPEND YOUR DAYS? I’ll spend my days enjoying the tennis and the luxurious accommodation at the Crown Melbourne. I look forward to frequenting some of the incredible restaurants there like Rosetta or Nobu. I am also looking forward to walking along the Yarra and visiting the Royal Botanical Gardens. WHAT’S IN YOUR CARRY-ON LUGGAGE? I tend to take my makeup and hair products in my carryon, as they can be fragile and easily broken. BEAUTY ESSENTIALS? Ultraviolet SPF 50 sunscreen and a good cleanser. I use Biologi BC refresh cleanser and moisturiser. Most of my skincare products are Biologi; their Radiance Duo is

amazing, and it is not harsh on my skin. I like the brand because they are Australian made and use native fruit extracts in the manufacturing process. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO READ? I like biographies and am currently reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed. DANCE TO? I’m not one to dance, but I do love 90s RnB! BEST TRAVEL TIP? Be on time when you are flying anywhere and research and download a good podcast ahead of time. I love listening to NBC’s Dateline. I do like a good crime podcast. FAVOURITE TRAVEL MEMORY? Being somewhere warm and tropical with my husband and just relaxing on a beach with a cocktail. I was quite young when I went to Phuket, but it is one of my favourite spots in the world. Hopefully, when everything calms down, I can go somewhere less touristy in Thailand.
