The Commission on Presidential Debates are masters of hookwinking the American people. Don’t believe me? This so called “Commission” is comprised of five people, all five of whom are members of the two major parties. The “Commission” took Ken Petty over the debates when the League of Women Voters realized that they were being used as pawns by the two major political parties. In 1992, in the next presidential election, an amazing thing happened that should not have happened, according to the “Commission”. Ross Perot got a seat at the debate and became the last third party candidate to challange the old two-party system on national television broadcast in primetime. Perot at the time was polling at 9%. After the debate Perot’s polling numbers shot upward, eventually giving the third party candidate 19% of

the popular vote. Fast forward 24 years and the “Commission” has effectively nuetered any chance of new ideas AND/OR new parties from being a part of the debate stage. The fifteen percent polling threshold is unreasonable. Considering that this threshold can only breached if Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party Jill Stien is listed as two extra choices in the actual polling questions, but they are not. There should be a different standard, and that standard should be that a candidate be on the ballot of enough states to garner 270 electorial votes. Johnson would qualify and I believe that Stein will be close. However those two are not the only two being screwed by the establishment parties. The 74% of Americans who think that third parties should be a part of the political dialog in this county are getting the shaft as well! It’s time to use this election to vote Libertarian or Green as a protest. I know that I am doing this, for sure!

TO THE REPUBLIC

“It depends on what your definition of “Is”, is. - President Clinton 1998

by Bart Pearston Recent polls show that Americans’ trust in politicians and the media is at historic lows. Both are vital for a functioning democracy. When Ben Franklin was asked what kind of government the Constitutional Convention had given the citizens of the new nation, he famously responded, “A Republic, if you can keep it sir.” The brilliance of this response was that the public is required to be informed and select representatives who can be trusted to adhere to the laws of the land and the interests of the country over their own. It is necessary then to at least be informed about who and what we vote on and then to actually vote accordingly. If we fail to do either, we risk losing what our Founding Fathers (is that still Politically Correct to use?) gave us. The Vice Presidential debate Tuesday is likely to be the most significant in history with both candidates shrouded in scandals and investigations into unethical and possible illegal activities. Sadly, according to ABC News almost half of those polled prior to the debate could even name the two candidates. We question how much we can trust polls anymore. Major newspaper readership and TV network viewerships are at record lows with a majority of Americans now getting their “news” from social media or online sources. (YEAH The Public News!!). This is not surprising considering the low trust factors for each mentioned above. For instance, A “yuuuge” story broke this week that Donald Trump pad no income taxes based on his stolen 1040’s in the New York Times. The next day it was revealed that the NY Times itself

paid No income taxes in 2014 and in fact received a $3.5 Million tax credit after showing a PROFIT of over $95 million for the year. I’m guessing the “Old Gray Lady” has no mirrors in its offices. Locally, stories of Texas “Withdrawing” from the Refugee Resettlement Program because the Federal government refused to increase vetting of refugees after repeated mass murders and attempts by Islamic immigrants domestically sounded significant. You had to research to find out from the ORR (Office of Refugee Resettlement) that the state actually has no power to refuse to take in refugees. Texas has taken in more than any other state of the over 70,000 resettled in just 2015. All this “withdrawal” did was remove the state from administering the federal funds to community agencies for dispersal. The ORR is currently looking for other organizations to administers the funding.

Theatre Under The Stars and The River Celebrate Disability Awareness Month Houston, TX - As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of The River Performing and Visual Arts Center (The River), Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is celebrating National Disability Awareness Month with special events and a public fundraising campaign. 20th Anniversary & River Background Story This year marks the 20th Anniversary of The River, which began in 1996 when a three-year-old girl named Samantha wanted to take ballet lessons, but was denied access because she has cerebral palsy which affects her vision, balance, speech and movement. Samantha’s mother, Cathy Binstock who was also a clinical social worker took it upon herself to see that no child would ever be denied access to arts education because of a disability. “The River believes in the power of the arts and inclusion. We see ability and use the arts to share it with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. It’s amazing what individuals with disabilities can accomplish when the bar is set high,” said Eileen Edmonds, Assistant Director of Education at The River.

With the help of arts instructors and other friends, Binstock, started with one Creative Movement class for seven little girls and The River was born. To date, The River has provided fine arts education for more than 25,000 children with special needs and their siblings.

The River Celebration On October 27th, The River will celebrate its 20th anniversary with its annual gala - The River Celebration. This year’s honorees will be Bob and Cathy Binstock. The gala will be chaired by Michele Womack with Robin and Danny Klaes as honorary chairs. This year’s Sammy Award recipients are Texans Head Coach Bill O’Brien and his wife, Colleen. The event will be emceed by Sunny 99.1 DJ, Dana Tyson.

The Pavilion Will Undergo LIVE MUSIC Construction During Off-Season The Woodlands, Texas – In May 2016, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Board of Directors unanimously approved a major construction plan that will touch nearly every part of the venue. The projects include a newly constructed VIP Club and operations building, new canopies at the concessions and entrance gates as well as a refresh to the dressing rooms. The new VIP club will replace the original structure and boast two floors of expansive seating, a catering kitchen and an outdoor patio overlooking the North Plaza. Additionally, the new operations building will provide more office and storage space for Pavilion staff. Fresh and modern canopies will become the face of The Pavilion as guests enter the venue. “This construction plan is exciting for our team as it impacts some piece of the entire venue,” says Jeff Young, vice president of operations for The Pavilion. “The updates will modernize The Pavilion and provide

an exceptional backdrop for future concerts and events.” “Whenever we have the opportunity to take our venue to the next level we are able to grab the attention of popular artists,” added Jerry MacDonald CEO and president of The Pavilion. “When we sell out shows, our true Mission of providing performing arts and educational outreach programs truly benefits. Construction will begin in late October and is planned to be completed over the next 9 months. The construction team is under the leadership of Fred Grona, senior vice president of Mission Constructors and Jeff Gerber, chief executive officer of PGAL Architects. Grona has been involved with every construction project at the venue since 1994. Due to the planned construction, this year’s Holly Jolly Jingle holiday performance will be cancelled. Most of the projects will be completed in time for the start of the 2017 concert season.

MARK’S MUSICAL MUSINGS

GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY This is one of my absolute favorite songs! Over time, I had collected well over 100 different music and video renditions of “Ghost Riders in The Sky” over the internet (mostly through Limewire, if you remember it, a freeware file-sharing program that the government shut down in ‘10). According to Wiki, over 50 versions of this song have made it successfully onto various music charts around the world. [NOTE: I just wish that I had burned my collection to CD at the time – before my library became the victim of a hard drive crash (and Government censorship).] Originally written by singer/songwriter Stan Jones while he was a Park Ranger at Death Valley in 1948, it is listed in the Top 100 Western Songs by the Western Writers of America – in fact, often listed as Number One! It has variously been titled “Ghost Riders in The Sky”, “Ghost Riders”, “Riders”, and “A Cowboy Legend”. Jones was 14

a real cowboy – as opposed to some of the ‘Hollywood Cowboys’ of the era – and song writer, and wrote many western movie theme songs and scores for, among others, director John Ford. The melody for “Ghost Riders” was cribbed by Jones from the American Civil War (PROPERLY known as The War of Yankee Aggression, thank you!) Yankee song “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”, and the storyline is based on the mythic Wild Hunt. (Look up the Wild Hunt for yourself – that’s not music!) The narrative of “Ghost Riders” is simple: a hard-living cowboy is riding the range, and sees a herd of phantom cattle stampeding across the sky, chased by ghostly cowboys on demonic fire-breathing horses. One of the ghost cowboys calls out to him, warning him that unless he mends his ways, he too will be doomed to pursue the Devil’s herd across the skies for eternity. PUBLIC NEWS

Jones recorded the first release of “Ghost Riders in The Sky” himself in ’48, but it was not a hit for him. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=eqFBE6vZ1i4&. He rereleased it on another album in ’57, but it didn’t do any better for him then, either. Burl Ives, known more as an operatic/big band singer at that time (and later as a folk singer) than country/ western, recorded it in ’49. Ives’ rendition was more operatic, with a big sound and big band backing, and was a hit and the first commercial success for the song. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=j2klh2cTa_Q&. Ives also re-released the song on another album, in ’69. Since that original success of “Ghost Riders” in ’49, I don’t know if I can list all the groups and music styles that have recorded it! Just by the numbers and types of covers, it has to be one of the most popular songs in the entire

world! “Ghost Riders” has been recorded as Big Band, Blues, Bluegrass, California/ Ranchero, Country/Western, Death Metal, Disco, Folk, Horror (by Christopher Lee https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=5PWuvHPGsjI&), Jazz, Instrumental, Irish Pop/Celtic (including another group I did an earlier article on, The Screaming Orphans https:// youtu.be/-3Nqy4ndBuY) , Merengue, Metal, Rock, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Surf/Surf Rock, and Trance/Electronica/Dub/ Fusion! It has been recorded by foreign groups in languages as diverse as Czechoslovakian, Chinese, Danish, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Gaelic, German, Italian, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Japanese, Spanish, and Swedish. [Can’t you just imagine this song about cowboys being sung in Chinese or Japanese? Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any links.] Believe it or not, even Elvis cov-

ered “Ghost Riders” https://youtu.be/ OVAp258IPBY! As did Dick Dale, Lawrence Welk, Marty Robbins, Tom Jones, Sha Na Na, The Sons of the Pioneers - with Len Slye (later known as Roy Rogers - see my earlier article on him) AND Ken Curtis (Festus from Gunsmoke) when both were still in the band together! https://youtu.be/eMqKv7BOg_s, Lorne Green, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Willie Nelson (in solo and duet with everyone else in the world!) and The Dixie Chicks (who cares!) Singing Cowboy Gene sang “Ghost Riders in the Sky” as the theme song for his movie “Riders in the Sky” (’49) https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=iRV6JszMXoo ), and again in another movie in ’53. In 1980, Johnny Cash sang a traditional version of “Ghost Riders in The Sky” on the TV Muppet Show accompanied by the Muppets: https://youtu. be/lJngsDS2Pzg. In ’82 the Sesame Street puppets sang a (much altered) version on that show. According to candid band members, “Ghost Riders” was also open inspiration for the Doors’ classic rock hit, “Riders on the Storm”, and later, REO’s hit “Ridin’ the Storm Out”. The song was also the direct inspiration for a ‘49 Western/horror comic from Magazine Enterprises https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:The_ Ghost_Rider_Magazine_Enterprises. jpg. Once the copyright on the ME character expired, in ’67 Marvel Comics came out with the Western/Horror series Ghost Rider (later changed to Phantom Rider) https://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/File:GhostRider_western_1. jpg, and then in ’73 with the Action/ Horror series Ghost Rider https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Marvel_ Comics_Ghost_Rider.jpg. [NOTE: Ghost Rider actually made his first comic appearance as a villain in DareDevil Comics in ’72.]

The Marvel Comic series (obviously – the movie was produced by Stan Lee/ Marvel) was then the primary inspiration for the first Nicholas Cage Ghost Rider movie (’07). The Spiderbait (an Australian group - the movie was actually filmed in Australia) trance version of the song was used in the soundtrack and during the end credits of the film, although the group itself was not credited. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=jvUpxZajw8Y&. [NOTE: This first Ghost Rider movie was actually extremely close to the story line of the original ‘73 Marvel comic book character – I was a fan of this comic when it came out - unlike Ghost Rider 2 (’11), which completely changed the storyline and was nothing much but a medium for Cage to make his trademark ‘insane character’ faces!] In the Blues Brothers 2000 (’98) movie, there is a marvelous electric bluegrass musical version by the Blues Brothers Band, with an eerie video: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=X8sJm7ZecR8&. [NOTE: Incidentally, the fantastic harmonica solo for the Blues Brothers movie version, while attributed to ‘Buster Blues’ in the credits, was actually played by John Popper of Blues Traveler.] Take a look/listen – probably you can find a version of “Ghost Riders” in whatever style of music you listen to, from some group you like, in some language you speak, that you will enjoy listening to!

WHORES

Atlanta Power Trio Whores To Release Gold, Coming To Houston on November 27th at Warehouse Studio Atlanta power trio WHORES. will release their new album GOLD on October 28th, 2016 via Entertainment One (eOne), the first for their new label home. The debut LP was recorded at Parhelion Studios with producer Ryan Boesch (Helmet, Fu Manchu, Melvins) The band is also revealing the artwork for GOLD done by Patrick Copeland. GOLD is the follow up to the highly buzzed about LP Clean (2013), which was widely cheered by critics. Also recorded by Boesch, the record sold out within a month, prompting the band to quickly release a second pressing. Clean is now on its fourth pressing. “We’ve spent the ATL summer blasting feedback and pick slides in a sweaty, metal box,” says frontman / guitarist Christian Lembach. “This is the result. Solid. Fucking. Gold.”

The band will join TORCHE in supporting RED FANG later this fall. Dates will kick off on November 18th at Slim’s in San Francisco, spanning coast to coast before wrapping up at the Showbox in Seattle on December 16th. “Red Fang and Torche are both huge inspirations, and we’re flattered to be a part of this amazing tour,” says Lembach. “Imminent tacos to follow.” “ The band has also announced its plans to participate in the 2016 AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL this October, playing alongside the likes of SLAYER, TOOL, PRIMUS, BARONESS and DEAFHEAVEN. Lembach adds, “Beyond flattered to be a part of Aftershock Festival this year. Our life partners in Red Fang played last year, and we’re super humbled to be a part of this awesome lineup.”

Kevin Fowler has announced the release of his new album, Coming to a Honky Tonk Near You. The album will be released on Friday, October 21 and pre-orders began last Friday, Sept. 9. All iTunes pre-orders include instant downloads of “Sellout Song” and Kevin’s brand new single “Texas Forever.” Working with a country artist is new territory for Juice, but we’re avid supporters of musicians whose sound is deeply rooted in all things Texas, and Kevin definitely fits that bill. Not to mention working with Triple 8 Management is a true pleasure. We hope you’ll consider covering Kevin Fowlers’ album release and we’d be happy to arrange an interview if you’d like to speak with him. Fowler is a country music powerhouse and I’m sure after you hear his new music you’ll agree. Additionally, Kevin has an upcoming tour date in Houston on Saturday, October 15 at ZiegenBock Music Festival if you want the opportunity to see him live. Please see the attached press release for more information, including upcoming tour dates and a track list from the upcoming album. Produced by Trent Willmon, the album speaks to all things country and celebrates Fowler’s legendary licks and his solid ascent to Texas music royalty. Fowler has made a name for himself as a Texas music staple with an avid fan base and a reputation as one of the state’s most beloved artists and live performers. The new album especially rings true to Fowler’s old-school charm, and at the same time, is amped up with a modern energy all his own. It is Fowler and his band’s bold proclamation to bring real-deal country music to the fans that love and appreciate it the most. “As I was trying to decide which songs to cut, these eight songs stood out to me and immediately became my favorites,” said Fowler. “I think our fans are going to love this record as much as I do. This is the best thing I’ve done since ‘Loose, Loud and Crazy,’ and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.” The first single off the album “Sellout

Song” was released in April 2016. The accompanying video, collaboration with fellow Texas songwriter Zane Williams, was also a fan favorite. The video premiered on tasteofcountry.com and was quickly shared by over 7,000 people, with the post reaching over 1.3 million generating 420,000 article clicks in the first three days. The song presents Fowler’s comical take on the modern trend of hip hop beats and phrases finding their way into Mainstream Top 40 country music. Throughout the duration of the album, Fowler rattles off drunken adventures on one number (“The Bouncer”) then switches gears to the sincere, humble likes of “Livin’ Proof ” or the affectionate ode to his home state on “Texas Forever.” With nods to all things that Fowler loves and adores about his home state, such as hunting, fishing and appreciating the outdoors, this album is a sure honky tonk classic. With over 500,000 albums sold, seven studio albums and 15 No. 1’s on the Texas Music Chart, Kevin Fowler is an absolute powerhouse in the country music scene. He is revered as one of the country music greats in Texas and one of the most relevant country musicians in the U.S. He has had songs recorded with the legendary George Jones, toured Europe and worked with other heavy hitters like Sammy Kershaw, Montgomery Gentry, Mark Chesnutt and many more! With the continued momentum stemming from his upcoming release, Fowler shows no signs of slowing down, and promises to maintain his authenticity by being “Loose, Loud, & Crazy,” and still “100% Texan.”
