LOCAL CLINIC FLOODED, FINDS TEMPORARY SHELTER Spring, TX, - Express Family Clinic was inundated with over 4 feet of water during Hurricane Harvey and lost everything. The clinic has been located at the Rayford Road shopping center for over 6 years and helps the entire area by providing low-cost visits to uninsured and underinsured patients. Timber Lakes Baptist Church located at 1540 Sawdust Road in Spring has graciously offered to house the clinic until they can get up and running again. Express Family Clinic has a patient base that stretches far beyond the Spring area. Patients travel as far as Katy and Clear Lake to take advantage of the low-cost services and great customer service. To help combat the distance the areas hardest hit have to travel, the clinic has launched a “virtual” visit. The “virtual” clinic visit works just like a regular office visit except that the interaction is done through a video call for medication refills and minor urgent care complaints like a sore throat or sinus infection.

According to Herpel, there is a lot to rebuild not to mention all the equipment and supplies that were lost. Until then she hopes that patients find her temporary location and continue to get the healthcare they need. ABOUT EXPRESS FAMILY CLINIC Express Family Clinic has two locations, Spring and Conroe. Melissa Herpel is the CEO and lead nurse practitioner for the clinics. The clinics offer family practice and urgent care services at a flat fee-forservice rate for uninsured and underinsured patients. Spotlight Restaurant of the Week

FU MANCHUNG The new Fu Manchung in Spring, TX, on FM 2920 near Meadowhill Dr is, as their menu states, “not your typical Asian Restaurant “ Owner Paul Huynh and Chef Taylor has opened one of Nick’s Local Eats favorite new spots offering South East Asian cuisine with a little Southern spin. Just about everything here has high quality meats, is scratch made and authentic. Chef Taylor ‘s creations have all been quite wonderful. Lunch is fast casual and dinner is full service with an expanded menu.

-Macarollees “This crispy golden delight is (add $2), or combo of all meats (add $4)” where the East meets the West. Using the eggroll wrap, we’ve rolled into it our childhood favorite, Mac n Cheese with ham bits. Dip this into the tangy BBQ sauce, and even adults will fall in love with it!”

Nick’s Recommendations: (menu descriptions by Fu Manchung) Appetizers: -Phorollees “For those who are adventurous and want to try something different, this is FU YOU! Imagine, a spring roll with some of the main Pho ingredients rolled up inside, that you then dip in the beef broth, and then add a little hoisin/siracha sauce on top, voila, both fused to become one. If you like it great! If not, go back to the original spring roll and traditional bowl of Pho without hurting the Pho-Rollee’s feelings!” -Crabby Cream Rolls “Now if you have had crab fried wontons or similar, this is a must try. We use the eggroll wrap to roll up Philadelphia cream cheese with little pieces of imitation crab meat in each roll which is then deep fried. Be careful, these rolls need to cool down or can explode in your mouth. Be patient, plenty to go around. (6 rolls per order).” Entrée’s -Tom Yummy Fried Rice “This fried rice dish is made with a flavorful combo of Thai spices that will surely add a little kick to your taste buds. You have probably tried Tom Yum soup, but now you get to try our fried rice version with the same flavors. Has bean sprouts, scrambled egg, & basil pieces. Pick your choice of either chicken, or beef, or shrimp

-Vermicelli Boom Cha Y’all “This Vietnamese rice noodle bowl is a refreshing take to grilled lemon grass beef mixed in with lettuce, and TWO crispy homemad egg rolls, topped off with the traditional sweet & mild spicy lemon fish based sauce, and one BIG grilled shrimp & crushed peanuts!”. -Wok N’ Beef ” Also known as disco beef, shaken beef, stir crazy beef, but here, you’re in for a special treat. We use Filet mignon, cut into small cubes, marinated in a special sauce for hours, then stir fried with red onion slices, and plated with some lettuce, red & green bell peppers, and jasmine steamed rice. (“Bo luc lat” [BAW-LUKE-LOCH] is the traditional name of this meal from Vietnam)’ Pho licious ”If you are a beef lover, look no further and try our rice noodle beef soup. A traditional Vietnamese favorite, we stew the broth overnight from all beef bones. Served with thin top sirloin rare slices, brisket slices,

and HOMEMADE fresh beef meatballs. If you haven’t tried this before, we highly recommend you step outside your comfort zone and you may be hooked PHO-life!”

-The Eloisa’s Fried Rice ”Just try it! You won’t go anywhere else for fried rice after you get hooked on this. We use a special home recipe mixture with premium grade Japanese grain rice. Very soft & moist. You pick your choice of either chicken, or beef, or (shrimp-add $2), or (combo of all meats $4).” Don’t miss out on a glass of Fruity Passion Fruit Juice. “This is a green tea leaf base brew with an added splash of passion fruit keeping your mouth and taste buds cool in this Texas summer heat!” Fu Manchung Phone: 832-791-5873 Address: 3416 FM 2920 Rd., Suite 210 Spring, TX 77388 Website: www.fumanchung.com

Casey Donahew Uses Concert dates to Fill The Tailer for Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts Nashville, TN – Lone Star son and Texas native, Casey Donahew, is using his live show as a means to help assist in relief to victims of Hurricane Harvey. Labeled as one of our nation’s worst disasters and the most significant storm to ever hit the U.S .coast, Hurricane Harvey has left a wake of destruction in its historically large path. Donahew and his wife Melinda sprang into action this week upon seeing the first video and hearing news reports of the damage caused by the storm knowing that they had to do something to help. Hear Casey’s own words here. “Texans are proud people, and we help our own, but we are not too proud to ask others for help when we need it. That’s why I’m asking my fans and anyone else who wants to donate to please do so. We have a large cargo trailer that we are pulling to our shows this week and we are asking people to help us fill it up with items like; diapers, baby wipes, baby formula, body soaps, deodorant, and hygiene packs. These are suggestions, we are not going to turn away anything nonperishable that anyone wants to donate,” says Donahew. Casey will be collecting at his shows this week in the following markets: August 30 – Dallas, TX – The Rustic (The Rustic is also giving a $10 ticket discount for anyone who donates at least 2 items) August 31 – Clinton, AR – National Championship Chuck Wagon Races September 1 – Lubbock, TX – Charley B’s September 2 – Belton, TX – Central Texas State Fair

THEATER Rec Room Arts’ Hit Kids Show Premieres All New Fourth Episode: GARBAGE ISLAND 4.0 Opens September 23rd Houston, TX – Back to school getting you down? Then get back to Rec Room for the ALL NEW episode of GARBAGE ISLAND 4.0, the only original live sketch show for children ages 2 – 6, in Hous-

ton. GARBAGE ISLAND premiered in February and ran to sold-out crowds for 4 weeks straight. The response was so fantastic, it returned with a second and third episode, again selling out every show. Houston parents lined up out the door to give their children the opportunity to enjoy the wacky characters and sustainability-themed 30-minute performance, while they enjoyed a break…and a mimosa. Rec Room Arts is thrilled to present an ALL NEW FOURTH episode, opening Saturday, September 23 and running through October 7. The new show will run at 10:30 a.m. every Saturday, with two additional afternoon shows at 1 p.m. on September 20 and October 7th. The new episode features some of the same characters from the original show, along with brand new characters, brand new actors, and Fall-themed fun! This episode focuses on the great outdoors, with a special video taped segment on how to use and reuse; including composting, seedlings and garbage costumes. As with previous GARBAGE ISLAND shows, kids are encouraged to bring their old toys that Rec Room donates to a local charity. This time around, the characters will engage with the kids in the audience in an improvised costume party, where the kids are invited to contribute their toy for a repurposed, Halloween-themed surprise! Why GARBAGE ISLAND? Rec Room co-founders Matt Hune and Stephanie Wittels Wachs had the idea to launch a Saturday morning kids show to fill a gap they had found: There were no affordable, theatrical performances in Houston for young children. They approached local playwright (and parent of two toddlers) Abby Koenig, who conceived and wrote GARBAGE ISLAND as a fun and interactive live show that is both silly and educational. In the vein of children’s sketch shows, such as You Can’t Do That On Television, and The Muppet Show, GARBAGE ISLAND features absurdist humor and improv, as well as audience participation. GARBAGE ISLAND takes place in a literal garbage dump where off-the-wall characters come to life to solve mysteries using creative and critical thinking skills. There is an underlying message of earth consciousness and personal growth. This episode will introduce a new MC for the show, local musician Joe Folladori (Catastrophic Theatre) as Garbage Man Joe’s cousin, Garbage Man Joe (yup we are doing that!). Houston actors and Rec Room regulars Dano Colon (The Alley Theatre) and Tasha Gorel (Horse Head Theatre) return to Garbage Island and are joined by new cast member, Brittny Bush (Classical Theatre Company). The set, originally designed by local artist Justin Dunford, and costumes designed by Houston Grand Opera costumer, Clair Hummel, are created using only found materials to further highlight themes of sustainability and reuse. Lights and sound are designed by Greg Starbird (Mildred’s Umbrella).

Center of Houston. Tickets range from $8 - $15 for ages 2 and above. Children under 2 are free to sit on their parents’ lap. Coffee and drinks available at the bar. Rec Room is located at 100 Jackson St. Metered Street parking is available.

DAVID POSADAS

FOODIES

DAVID POSADAS & TACO CRAVE by Matt Vernon David Posadas owns and operates Taco Crave. David grew up in Monterrey Mexico and outside his middle school was a taco stand. It was the first street tacos he ever had and he said it was love at first bite. He remembers the taste delights, the combination of flavors, the juicy meats, spicy salsas and fresh tortillas. He began to crave those delicious tacos. As a middle schooler David dreamed of tacos and he still has those same dreams today! David had a dual passport and was able to travel back and forth from Mexico to Houston. His grandmother and uncle owned a restaurant in Bryan Texas that had been in the family for over 60 years. His uncle would give him advice like “if you sell something, make it something you like!” He would spend summers at the family restaurant helping and learning about the restaurant business. David majored in Industrial Engineering and got a job doing metal fabrication in a factory in Northern Mexico. He never was fulfilled in that job. He says America has better opportunities for big dreamers and more doors can open if you believe in yourself. He moved to Houston to bring his vision of great Mexican street tacos to our streets, Although, of

He tells me he wants to have a place where people can eat well and have fun. He greets and enjoys talking to everyone, when he is not there, his guests ask about him. When I asked what advice he has for those who have the dream of owning their own restaurants he wanted to be realistic; It is very hard work! The restaurant business takes a lot of time and money. He says you need to be able to go 2 years without receiving a paycheck and to think your concept through before starting. However, he agrees that you get
