TO THE REPUBLIC

Diversity

by Bart Pearston

PUBLIC NEWS IS HIRING FAST LEARNERS WHO WANT TO MAKE AN IMPACT AND CHANGE THEIR WORLD CALL 832-818-8969

An awful lot has been happening lately in the name of “Free Speech”. It is our most valued right and premier amendment. I found it ironic then that in light of media hysteria over protests which municipalities continue to allow to become violent, the same media has basically swept one such atrocity “under the rug”. Last week, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, fired a VP of Engineering, Ari Balogh for writing a “Diversity Manifesto” memo challenging the company’s actual diverse makeup ideologically. The manifesto criticizes company initiatives aimed at increasing gender and racial diversity and argues that Google should instead focus on “ideological diversity”. In it he wrote, “questioning our assumptions and sharing different perspectives” is an important part of Google’s culture, but said that stereotypes and harmful assumptions have no place in such debates. “One of the aspects of the post that troubled me deeply was the bias inherent in suggesting that most women, or men, feel or act a certain way. That is stereotyping, and it is harmful,” Balogh wrote. This is clearly a call for INCLUSION. But not in the Bizarro P.C. world in which we currently find ourselves.

ployees pressured him publicly through twitter and in a classic, “Do as I say and not as I do” the release claims that ALL Google employees, “make an effort over the coming days to reach out to those who might have different perspectives from your own”. In a Town Hall meeting held online last Thursday, Pichai described having to cut short his family vacation to Europe and Africa to denounce the implied sexism and racism that the hiring of less qualified minority employment instead of ideological diversity is harmful to the company. This kind of freedom of speech was described as “harmful” to the company’s employees and warranted dismissal. Maybe it is just me, but isn’t the act of firing someone with a different opinion just proving his fact of the actual lack of tolerance of ideological diversity? I understand that private companies can hire and fire “At Will” legally, but such a powerful company’s obvious bias has to make one wonder about its potential impact on the internet.

Already challenged by Conservative groups and websites as being either censored or demoted when searches are performed, this action further strengthIn his released statement, Pinchai claims ens their complaint that Google denies. that Balogh violated the company’s “Code Diverse and diversity in my dictionary of Conduct” by writing the internal memo definition are a “Wide variety of differing although it wasn’t him who released it to things”. LSC-Tomball Students Receive the Most Scholarships in School History TOMBALL, Texas – According to a study by the Institute for Higher Education Policy, over the past 20 years, tuition and fees at national universities, both private and public, have risen sharply, making paying for college one of the toughest parts of earning a degree. But that burden is being increasingly eased at Lone Star College-Tomball. To help pay for college, students at LSC-Tomball were awarded the most scholarships in its campus’ history during the 2016-2017 academic school year. “Increasing financial aid and scholarship assistance for LSC-Tomball students has been a top priority,” said LSC-Tomball President Dr. Lee Ann Nutt. According to LSC-Tomball records, a total of 352 students were awarded scholarships during the 2016-2017 academic school year for a total of $290,487. “A couple of years ago we launched Tomball 2020, a campus-wide study on how we could improve in four areas: Scholarships, Students, Awards and Offerings,” Nutt pointed out. “As a result of the study, we established our Tomball 2020 strategic plan. To have now awarded the most scholarships in the history of the college is amazing, because now more students have the opportunity to have an experience at LSC-Tomball that will lead to a better future.” Scholarships were awarded to LSCTomball students through the Lone Star College Foundation (LSCF), in addition to institutional and outside scholarships.

Gabriela Andrade, accountant for the LSCF, said the Foundation awarded 172 LSC-Tomball students scholarships for a total of $138,125 during the 2016-2017 academic school year. That’s up from just two years ago, where 118 LSC-Tomball students were awarded scholarships for a total of $104,250.

a big supporter of the Lone Star College Foundation,” Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor said shortly after the event. “As a former director of Financial Aid, I saw a definite need to make as many scholarships available as possible.”

“We could not have done this without the support of our donors and the LSC Foundation,” Nutt stressed, before adding, “They are the ones who have made this happen, and for that we are very grateful.”

Duran, who will attend the University of Texas in the fall, was recently awarded $16,700 per year through The Terry Foundation Transfer Scholarship, a scholarship that’s awarded to non-traditional students who are transferring from a Texas community college or university and are working toward their first baccalaureate degree.

Founded in 1991, the LSCF raises funds and manages assets to provide student scholarships and to support academic and workforce programs. The LSCF has expanded its initial investment of $20,000 into an extensive portfolio of over $20 million with a primary focus on building scholarship endowment. In light of this fact, Nutt said she invites anyone who has ever thought about attending college to apply for admission to and available scholarships at LSC-Tomball. Financially, there is a good reason to apply. In April, LSCF raised over $450,000 as part of StarGala 2017, its annual signature event to raise scholarship funds, funds which students can use to help pay for college.

Duran, who could not speak a word of English when she moved to the Unites States in 2012, credits the help provided by LSC-Tomball’s TRiO Student Support Services, in securing the scholarship to continue her education. “I am definitely grateful for everything I have received and I thank Lone Star College-Tomball and everyone involved with the scholarship I have now,” Duran said.

ISRAEL GUTIERREZ

CONROE – Lone Star CollegeMontgomery student Israel Gutierrez had just finished kindergarten when he begged his mother to buy him a multiplication book. He has a passion for math and now the largest private source of scholarships in the state of Texas has decided he has a passion for following his educational dreams. The Terry Foundation has awarded Gutierrez the Terry Transfer Scholarship. This award is given to non-traditional students who are transferring from a Texas community college or university and are working toward their first baccalaureate degree. It covers approximately 65 percent of the scholar’s cost of attendance.

“I was accepted by several state universities,” said Gutierrez. “However, a lack of finances kept me from pursuing these opportunities. I knew LSC-Montgomery was a strong school with small class sizes, plus it was affordable and close to home so I attended there.”

Bakers have competed for thirty-four years to win the coveted title of “Grand Champion”. 2016 Grand Champion winners are invited to help judge the 2017 Kolache Bake Show. There are six divisions Youth/Burleson County, Youth/State, Non-Professional/Burleson County, Non-Professional/State, Professional, Champion. A local favorite is the Kolache Eating Contest which will be held at 11:00 a.m. in front of the North stage with individual and team competitors entertaining the crowd in their quest to become the champion eating contestant in their categories with cash prizes and caps awarded. There are plenty of Kolache Bake Shoppe vendors to buy kolaches by the dozen - eat some and take the rest home. The day-long Kolache Festival will feature continuous entertainment on North stage, featuring Czech bands including the Shiner Hobo Band and the Moravians. Jodie Mikula Orchestra will be playing at the South Stage (BB&T Drive-Thru on Buck Street). Nashville indie-pop duo Airpark will release their latest EP Early Works, Volume 2 via the band’s own label, Eugenia Hall Records, on September 15. The release arrives six months after their debut, Early Works, Volume 1, which showcased the duo’s ability to create evocative moments with the most minimal of instrumentation. That sense of minimalism gave way to something heartier as the band, comprised of brothers Michael Ford, Jr. and Ben Ford, began touring the country in early 2017, playing more than 100 shows during the year. Along the way, Airpark bolstered its ranks to a four-piece band for live performances. As the musicians played together, their evolving atmospheric grooves made room for synthesizers, brotherly harmonies, syncopated guitars, melodic hooks and a globallypercussive punch. The foundation for

Volume 2 was in place. Back home in Nashville, Airpark recorded Early Works, Volume 2, with engineer and co-producer Ryan McFadden (Torres, Tony Joe White). The tracks were mixed by engineer Gavin Paddock (ZZ Ward, Valerie June) and mastered by Brian Lucey (Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys). A bold expansion of the band’s original sound, these four songs show the brothers’ ability to connect with the listener in both the loudest and most intimate of songs. The Ford brothers launched the group in 2016, one year after their previous project The Apache Relay disbanded. So far Airpark has been embraced by Team Coco, Baeble, American Songwriter, Lockeland Springsteen, Under The Radar and more.

“Every year we like to sign at least one blues legend to our lineup, bands who are on the rise, or artists who have impressed us on any size stage in the year leading up to River Revival,” said Splice Records CEO Shaun Brennan. “This year we have added the best live band in country to the bill, Pimps of Joytime, from Brooklyn, New York. They are a

multi-genre funky mash up that I saw live for the first time three years ago at JazzFest. Ever since that first show, I have followed them and seen them on every occasion that I could. The problem was that every time would require me to be in New Orleans. That triggered my will, and I was determined to change that. I made it a dream of mine to be the one to bring them to Texas to have them play live at River Revival. The energy from their live performance combined with their unique mixture of funky-soul has me profoundly excited to announce that the Pimps of Joytime will be closing the main stage and headlining this year’s festival.” “Friday night we have Grammy Award winner Alvin Youngblood Hart bringing his trio to the stage,” said Brennan. “He is a musician’s musician who has a long history of incredible songs with a rootsy Mississippi Delta blues sound that is unique to modern music. His guitar and songwriting will give our campers that balance of music that is meant to be heard in nature around a campfire.”

“We are not trying to be the biggest festival or the loudest, we are just trying to be the most fun,” says Splice Records CEO Shaun Brennan. “The camping and the Guadalupe River are what separates us from other festivals. River Revival is so much more than a music fest, the combination of the music and river is our recipe for a special weekend.” Clean and maintained showers are available on-site, but they do require quarters for operation. Rec Room Arts’ Hit Kids Show Premieres All New Fourth Episode: GARBAGE ISLAND 4.0 Opens September 16! Houston, TX – Back to school getting you down? Then get back to Rec Room for the ALL NEW episode of GARBAGE ISLAND 4.0, the only original live sketch show for children ages 2 – 6, in Houston. GARBAGE ISLAND premiered in February and ran to sold-out crowds for 4 weeks straight. The response was so fantastic, it returned with a second and third episode, again selling out every show. Houston parents lined up out the door to give their children the opportunity to enjoy the wacky characters and sustainability-themed 30-minute performance, while they enjoyed a break…and a mimosa. Rec Room Arts is thrilled to present an ALL NEW FOURTH episode, opening Saturday, September 16 and running through October 7. The new show will run at 10:30 a.m. every Saturday, with two additional afternoon shows at 1 p.m. on September 20 and October 7th. The new episode features some of the same characters from the original show, along with brand new characters, brand new actors, and Fall-themed fun! This episode focuses on the great outdoors, with a special video taped segment on how to use and reuse; including composting, seedlings and garbage costumes. As with previous GARBAGE ISLAND shows, kids are encouraged to bring their old toys that Rec Room donates to a local charity. This time around, the characters will engage with the kids in the audience in an improvised costume party, where the kids are invited to contribute their toy for a repurposed, Halloween-themed surprise! Why GARBAGE ISLAND? Rec Room co-founders Matt Hune and Stephanie Wittels Wachs had the idea to launch a Saturday morning kids show to fill a gap they had found: There were no affordable, theatrical performances in Houston for young children. They approached local playwright (and parent of two toddlers) Abby Koenig, who conceived and wrote GARBAGE ISLAND as a fun and interactive

live show that is both silly and educational. In the vein of children’s sketch shows, such as You Can’t Do That On Television, and The Muppet Show, GARBAGE ISLAND features absurdist humor and improv, as well as audience participation. GARBAGE ISLAND takes place in a literal garbage dump where off-the-wall characters come to life to solve mysteries using creative and critical thinking skills. There is an underlying message of earth consciousness and personal growth. This episode will introduce a new MC for the show, local musician Joe Folladori (Catastrophic Theatre) as Garbage Man Joe’s cousin, Garbage Man Joe (yup we are doing that!). Houston actors and Rec Room regulars Dano Colon (The Alley Theatre) and Tasha Gorel (Horse Head Theatre) return to Garbage Island and are joined by new cast member, Brittny Bush (Classical Theatre Company). The set, originally designed by local artist Justin Dunford, and costumes designed by Houston Grand Opera costumer, Clair Hummel, are created using only found materials to further highlight themes of sustainability and reuse. Lights and sound are designed by Greg Starbird (Mildred’s Umbrella). Children are invited to bring an old toy with them every week that may be used during the performance as an improv piece for the actors. As such, no two performances will be the same and the audience is encouraged to return to see how the show changes each week. Each performance will culminate in a big kid dance party, with Garbage Man Joe and the cast. After each show, old toys will be donated to a local charity such as Women’s Center of Houston. Tickets range from $8 - $15 for ages 2 and above. Children under 2 are free to sit on their parents’ lap. Coffee and drinks available at the bar. Rec Room is located at 100 Jackson St. Metered Street parking is available.

MARK’S MUSICAL MUSINGS

CLEGHORN: AMERICA’S CELTIC ROCK BAND by Mark Crampton Stay with me, this rambling entro does lead to music, OK? I am, and always have been, a mail-order catalog junky – back to my many years overseas in the Army. I lived for the periodic catalogs from Bass Pro Shops, Cabellas, Gander Mountain, Atlantic Cutlery, etc. (Most of the outdoorsy stuff in those catalogs was a LOT better than the crappy low-bid field gear the Army issued, don’t you know!) Well, after I got out of the Army, as well as attending Renaissance Faires and Celtic Music Festivals as often as I could, I got interested in Scottish and Highland heritage and history, and added Scottish/ Celtic merchandise catalogs to my lists. One catalog I get is from The Celtic Croft www.kilts-n-stuff.com/ – who, along with kilts, sell various Celtic music CDs. One of the bands whose music CDs they listed, back about 2006 or -7 or so, was Dallas-based NEEDFIRE. I didn’t buy any of their CDs at that time – I was more into “traditional” Celtic groups like ALBANNACH and CLANADONIA back then.

But I remembered their name, and I believe the first time I actually saw NEEDFIRE in concert was at the 2009 North Texas Irish Festival, in this video https://youtu.be/pt3pqjvaA-c John Cleghorn on lead, Dylan Cleghorn on violin, Ed Waleski on bass, Matt Henthorn on drums, Brad Madison on bagpipes. They often had other musicians – pipers, fiddlers, even guitarists play with them in concerts https://youtu.be/AfxZmam1KTE NEEDFIRE was one of the top-name Texas Celtic bands of that decade, and I also saw them at various times at the San Antonio Highland Games and the Austin Celtic Festival. They were fantastic, and I would think nothing of traveling to Dallas, San Antonio or Austin just to hear them at a festival or event! Of course, I have all their music CDs. Then NEEDFIRE – the great band that I was familiar with - just sort of phased out, I guess about the spring of 2010 or so. An entirely different band, but still calling itself NEEDFIRE http://www.needfiremusic.com/ [This website hasn’t been

updated since 2013] – with Ed Waleski from the original NEEDFIRE as frontman – appeared on the Texas Celtic Music circuit, but they were NOT the NEEDFIRE I liked – they weren’t the same, their music wasn’t the same - so I quit following them. I was unhappy! Then, wonder of wonders, at the Sherwood Forest Celtic Music Festival (September 2011), I first heard a band called CLEGHORN – with John and Dylan Cleghorn! https://youtu.be/zEul6nnh_qA Well! CLEGHORN played much of the music from NEEDFIRE that I was familiar with and liked, they put on one heck of a stage show, and the audience loved them! So I was happy again! Now CLEGHORN is one of the music groups I follow to all the fests and festivals! Here’s a video of CLEGHORN on stage at Sherwood Forest Celtic Music Fest September 2015, https://youtu.be/XGTJ4Fp9VW8, where I got a chance to talk with John and Dylan in depth. For those of you who don’t know, John Cleghorn had been a fixture on the Dal-

las rock/blues music scene since the late 1980s – singing and playing guitar with various bands (including THE KANGS and the JUNK POETS), writing and producing music. (The JUNK POETS did release one CD back then, but I cannot find it anywhere!) John released a solo CD in 1999 ‘Freetown Johnny” in which he wrote and arranged all the songs – and yes, I have it! (Believe it or not, I had to go to eBayUK to find a copy!) The thing is, on this solo CD his music manifestly exhibits the SAME distinctive style and arrangement as the music he later wrote for NEEDFIRE! So remember that little tidbit, OK? Like I said, I sat down with and interviewed John and Dylan in depth. John said that the original NEEDFIRE was formed in 2005 when another Celtic Rock band that he (very briefly) and Ed Waleski were in together broke up. He and Ed mutually decided to form another band (although Ed now claims that HE alone started NEEDFIRE!), recorded a few demos to work with, and decided on

a blues/rock with Celtic overtones style of music. They then began looking for musicians. John got drummer Matt Henthorn to join up (he actually left another band); Ed got piper Brad Madison to come. John’s 16-year old son Dylan was truly an accomplished viola player, and asked for the chance to try out for the violin part. He played one rehearsal, and got the part! John wrote almost all NEEDFIRE’s

music, and said their music writing procedure was the same one he always (and still follows): John was the principle songwriter (although Dylan and Ed did contribute, also); John would initially write the vocals and lead guitar parts, then turn it over to Dylan to write the fiddle (and now, bagpipe) and Ed to write the bass lines. Dylan said that sometimes, they would reverse the procedure, he would give John a fiddle or bagpipe part to work with.

Obviously, this was a music-writing formula that worked – and still works for them! When I asked John and Dylan just exactly WHAT happened with NEEDFIRE, because I told them I followed them for several years, then suddenly the group calling itself NEEDFIRE was not NEEDFIRE? They said that basically there were beginning to be creative and control issues,

and they were both actually away from the band, when Ed took it over. (Again, in interviews, Ed claimed that HE alone started the group. In one interview, he said that John and Dylan were employees and he fired them; in another, he said that the three were equal partners in the band, and they individually left several months apart. He also claimed the HE alone wrote and owned all the band’s music.) At any rate, John said that he actu-

Please contact janifer.wheeler@gmail.com for information on sponsoring. “At this ‘She Factory’ event, ‘The Song Pool’ brings together a variety of women songwriter/

performers in an interactive, casual environment to play some of their songs and discuss with both the audience, and the other performers, the art of songwriting,” said Kathy Valentine. “She may discuss the specific song, what inspired it or how songwriting in general impacts, narrates or expresses aspects of her life.” “Providing opportunities for local, femaleowned businesses to support local, female musicians just makes sense, considering all of us operate in a space of entrepreneurial creativity,” said Janifer Wheeler, president of Texas Business Women - Capital City Chapter, owner of Wheelhouse Learning Solutions and founding member of Black Fret. “When women come together to encourage, empower and enlighten each other, our world is a better place.” Valentine was inspired to start this series to highlight the talent and artistic endeavors of women and bring together the communities of women in the arts and businesses. As an investor in The Townsend, she sees the venue as an ideal place to implement innovative events, a place to bring to fruition her desire to contribute to the Austin community. She Factory gives the audience a look behind the curtain into the artistic process as part of the entertainment. It forges relationships between female led business leaders and artists, empowering and supporting each other. To enable a charity such as The SAFE Alliance to benefit from door donations brings the event into a pay-it-forward circle.
