Dear Readers, I am homeless. Didn’t intend to be homeless. In fact I tried my best not to be homeless. it’s amazing what happens to your life when you’re dealt a bad hand. Generally whenever you’re falling on your luck it’s good to have familythat can rally around you and help you out. But don’t you dare try to bother the Church about your problems. Because they just don’t care. A case in point, and I know this from personal experience because I had attended one of the largest churches in The Woodlands. when I went in the hospital in September for eight days Not only was I Ken Petty never called to see how I was doing but no one visited from my church with the exception of my then spouse. I’m not the richest guy, not even close, so maybe the ‘church leaders’ figured well you know he doesn’t own a big house, he doesn’t drive a fancy car, and doesn’t have a cool title with a really big company. I guess I’m not the demographic the lead pastor is trying to court for his church. So after being on his standing order for coffee for about 4 or 5 years I said you know don’t worry about it let’s just know that we’re never going to have coffee and just call it a day and go our separate ways I guess that hit home because he never spoke to me since. I also have a huge red flag that flies

whenever I hear a church preaching Malachi 3:10 twisting scripture to lead their members into giving money to God. Which means giving it to them (the church leaders). Can you imagine Jesus with the Rich Young Ruler and the Rich Young Ruler wanted to know how to have eternal life in Jesus told him take all you possess sell it give it to the poor then come follow me. Today’s teachers, and I can name some Churches, would have told the Rich Young Ruler take what you have sell it and then give everything to us after all you don’t want to rip off God right? The tithing perversion continues ever since the year 777 when the New Testament Church run themselves as a not-forprofit “charity” but when the poor turn

to them and ask them for help whether it be for food or for shelter or even for gas money they will refer you to other agencies because they just don’t do that sort of thing. Isn’t it sad. The representative of Jesus Christ shirking her responsibility to the poor and needy. the wealthier churches of today don’t really care about the poor they just they just care about the bottom line. Bigger buildings, better programs, more staff. Oh, the poor and go get food stamps and other governemnt assistance. Rich churches are probably the stingiest churches when it comes to helping the poor however organizations are pathetic. In organized religion is the most pathetic of them all. The poor individual is more generous than all churches combined

system identical to that utilized in countries like Australia and Canada. When CNN’s Jim Acosta made the laughable assertion that only citizens of Australia and England speak English, the accusation was made that this was a racist attempt to omit any immigrants of color. With the start of a new school year here, it is easy to feel the excitement in the air. But this year IS different than any previous year in Texas. Many districts aren’t feeling the “cheer”. I have regularly documented the plight of large urban districts that have an excessive number of English-challenged students. That number has reached record levels this year. The Texas Education Agency has identified over 40 school districts who under House Bill 1842’s district rating system MUST show improvement by 2018 or face possible forced change of their Boards by outside boards of managers. Unsurprisingly, the largest districts of Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, and San Antonio are included. The largest district of them all is Houston, with its 200+K students and $2+Billion budget. 2017 test scores and ratings are due out later this month. This is the consequence under AEIS, the Academic Excellence Indicator System adopted in 2003-04 districts which are rated as “Improvement Required” for 5 or more years. TEA clearly holds administrations responsible, in spite of their claims of their demographics being out of their control and therefore are unfairly held accountable for their continued decline, in spite of their promised improvements. One amusing anecdote occurred during last week’s White House press conference. When press secretary aide Steven Miller announced the administration’s immigration reform proposal, it included a merit based immigration

PUBLIC NEWS

An under-reported fact is that the number of foreign born residents in the US has quadrupled in the past 40 years. There is an obvious strain on the public education system to teach English skills to students who are English as a Second Language and have non English speaking parents. The strain is both emotional and financial and felt most in the largest districts. The agency’s prescribed “remedy” for these districts which have proven unable to cure their own maladies is to, “Throw the buns out”. “It changes our focus from the level of the campus to the absolute top — where I think needs to be — sort of school boards and superintendents,” said Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath at a hearing last August. Morath an ex Dallas ISD school board member himself realizes that this is a drastic step. It is almost unfathomable to imagine the state finding literally hundreds of “managers” who are competent and able to make the necessary changes to fix these broken urban schools. HISD Attorney David Thompson of the law firm Thompson and Horton described it as an “almost nuclear option of the governance of an entire community’s schools.” Bills have been submitted in either the Regular or current Special Session to increase funding and Teacher pay but NONE changing 1842’s requirements so it looks like these 40 districts are faced with Mission Impossible, should they choose to accept it. This message will self destruct in 10 months.

Three LSC-Tomball Students Awarded Terry Foundation Transfer Scholarship TOMBALL, Texas – When Ana Duran moved from Mexico to the United States in 2012, she could not speak a word of English, but after years of hard work, she not only became fluent with the English language, she, along with two other Lone Star College-Tomball students were recently awarded the Terry Foundation Transfer Scholarship, which provides funding toward completing a bachelor’s degree.

LSC-Tomball to Host Event for Students Taking Online Classes

TOMBALL, Texas – Thirty-seven percent of all Lone Star College-Tomball students take distance-learning courses, those are classes taken completely online with no face-to-face component. This is 13 percent higher than the Lone Star College average. That’s why LSC-Tomball is hosting an Online OnBoarding event covering the basics of taking online/hybrid classes. Event organizer LSC-Tomball Professor Caroline Jamroz said it will be held at 7 p.m., Aug. 30 at the LSC-Tomball main campus, in room North-103. “Although this event is for students taking online/hybrid classes at Lone Star College-Tomball, it is a face-toface event to answer questions and help students become familiar with the online environment,” Jamroz said. Understanding that some online students are unable to come to campus, the event will also be available to watch online. Visit Lonestar.edu/Everse-at-Tomball for more information. LSC-Tomball’s decision to hold the Online On-Boarding event could prove to have perfect timing. According to statistics from the Babson Survey Research Group’s annual survey, the number of students taking online courses grew to 5.8 million nationally, continuing a growth trend that has been consistent for 13 years. More than a quarter of higher education students (28 percent) are enrolled in at least one online course. “Our event will cover the basics of taking online/hybrid classes and tips for success,” Jamroz said, before adding, “We may discuss how to get in touch with tech support and advisors, LSC-Montgomery is in the process of where to get tutoring, resources on selecting a location for its Magnolia campus, online resources, and more.” Center. RAPID FIRE WITH ROBERT CASTRO

TEN QUESTIONS WITH IIOIOIOII

IIOIOIOII (pronounced I.O.) has seem to have come out of nowhere. Or maybe I just a little slow on learning of him. Christopher Gurney is the mastermind behind some of the most refreshing new music to come out in quite some time. If you like your 80’s Synth mixed with a little industrial you have to check him out. I sat down with him to get a feel of where he is coming from and where he is heading. So here is my 10 questions for IIOIOIOII 1. Lets start with the obvious question ..what is the correct way to say IIOIOIOII and what is it’s meanings It’s pronounced I.O. There’s no meaning or significance behind the name. I chose it purely for the visual appeal. I come from a design and visual arts background and I wanted the project name to be balanced. It’s been incredibly fun to see what everyone comes up with regarding the pronunciation though. People have thought it was binary, numerology based, all the way to some weird yodel. People have been very

12

AUGUST 9 - 22, 2017

creative in trying to find the meaning behind a name that never had one to begin with. 2. What impact do you want to have in the world ? There are two things I would love to achieve through this project. The first thing is honesty. Everything I write are from perspectives or experiences that I’ve had. I want everything I put out there to come from a place that is upfront and honest. That’s the only way anyone can ever genuinely take anything from what you’re saying and be able to relate to it. The second thing is openness,. I want people to accept each other and learn from one another. Increasing acceptance and perspective regarding race, cultures, gender/sexuality movements, etc... are the quickest ways to grow and become a better person. I don’t know how much of that I can accomplish in the grand scheme of things but I know if I keep trying I’m doing the right thing.

PUBLIC NEWS

3. What singer/group was the very first to influence you I grew up listening to a lot of different genres but for this project, Depeche Mode was a huge influence vocally. Gary Numan is a huge inspiration instrumentally with various movie scoring influences from people like Vangelis. 4. How much of your personality or personal experiences are reflected in your songs All of it. I try to write everything from personal experiences or from my perspective if the subject matter is less tangible and more universal. I’ve written songs that were about losing friends to heroin to learning to accept one another for the greater good. A message of despite differences we’re all we’ve got. You can release some great music without putting yourself into it but it becomes entertainment rather than anything you can call a sincere message.

www.publicnewsonline.com

5. Is acid better now than it used to be? How about the x? this is just a silly question no need to answer lol HAHA Surprisingly, I’ve never done them. I am a big caffeine junkie though. I love my coffee. 6. Who have you wanted to collaborate with that you haven’t yet? I’ve got a long wishlist. I mean, who wouldn’t want to work with their heroes like Depeche Mode or Gary Numan? Some of the people I would like to work with in some way would be projects like Health, Aesthetic Perfection, Dead When I Found Her, to name a few off the top of my head. I do consider myself lucky to have worked with or performed with some really talented musicians like Mr.Kitty, The Rain Within, Astari Nite, Architect, and Distorted Retrospect. 7. What is your first ever album to buy? I want to say it was Metallica Ride The Lightning on cassette tape, though I think it was a bootleg tape that I got as a

gift from a cousin (Ssshhh don’t tell anyone). I think the first CD I bought was a Megadeth album. I was really into metal as a kid. Then around the early 90s I was introduced to Pretty Hate Machine and that’s when it really began for me.

want everyone to know that I appreciate that they chose to listen to me for that brief moment and that they were part of this experience.

When Travis isn’t making mischief at Tejas he’s making himself known next door at Jane & John Dough Bakery. In an old house built in 1936, the eclectic coffee house is filled with energy said co-owner Jane Wild. “You can feel it all around,” she said. Co-owner John Blankemeyer agrees adding that the energy is strongest in the hallway leading from the kitchen to the main dining room. “When you pass through the hallway you get the feeling you’re being watched,” he said.

TOMBALL, TEXAS – SMALL TOWN WITH BIG HAUNTS By day Old Town Tomball, 28-miles northwest of Houston, is filled with eclectic antique and specialty shops, award winning mom-and-pop eateries, live entertainment, festivals, and a quality of life that makes living in a small town very desirable But, late at night when the moon is high and the streets are empty, Tomball, Texas is said to host a different sort of night life; a “spirited” night life filled with unexplained incidences involving things that go bump in the night. You see, Tomball is said to be the small town with the big haunts.

Like his friends at Tejas Chocolate + Barbecue, Blankemeyer believes that Travis is a joker. Things go missing only to show up elsewhere, there will be knocking on the kitchen door as if someone wants to come in when there is no one on the other side, and the occasional voices and shout-outs are reminders that they are sharing space with an unseen guest, he said. But, it was the first encounter with Travis that was the most memorable recalls Blankemeyer. Recently named the #6 Barbecue Joint in Texas by Texas Monthly Magazine, Tejas is one of the town’s hot spots for “unexplained late night groans, and the sound of footsteps in the attic and on the staircase,” said co-owner Scott Moore, Jr. “When we moved into the building it got my attention real fast!” he said.

Moore sees Travis as more of a prankster, but, “sometimes it gets borderline uncomfortable being alone here,” he said. “I’ve never experienced the weird things that happen here anywhere else I’ve ever worked or lived.”

“During construction we had a row of trash bags filled with debris stacked against a wall. There was also a piece of wood, a wall stud, leaning against the same wall behind the bags,” he said. “As two of us watched, the stud didn’t just fall over the bags. It leaped over them and landed flat on the floor. The two of us just looked at each other, like ‘what just happened?’. Now we realize that it must have been Travis.”

Similar stories were told by the developer during the renovation of the old house on North Elm Street. Remodelers regularly heard the sound of someMoore said that he had heard tales from neighboring shop owners about one walking in the attic, tools left in a ghost named Travis who wanders one room would later turn up in anthe alley behind his shop at night. other, and then there was the constant “We were working late one evening uneasy feeling of being watched when and our back alley gate opened and alone in the building. powder for the rebel army’s artillery pieces. In 1864 a horrific explosion destroyed the facility killing three men working there. The force of the blast was so great that a huge crater was created that over time filled with water and became a popular swimming hole for locals. Despite rumors of spirits at the pond and in the surrounding woods, the lure of the cool dark water continued to draw swimmers to the powder mill site willing to risk a ghostly encounter for a quick dip. Unfortunately for some that decision ended in their death. After several curious drownings the powder mill pond was fenced, but the rumors remain even today.

sorts of noises, and has even touched people as they shop. We all know that when the festivals start happening there at the old Depot, it disturbs Gertie and she shows her presence,” Harvey said. A City of Tomball employee reported hearing a loud banging sound coming from Granny’s Korner one morning while setting up for a festival before dawn. The erratic sound was as if someone was inside pounding against the old shop windows facing Market Street in order to get the employee’s attention. As the employee walked away from the area the sound immediately stopped. Feeling a presence is one thing, but actually coming face to face with Gertie in the shop one day was all the proof Harvey would ever need to become a believer. “I was in a hurry and walked around a wall and nearly ran over her,” she said. “Thinking it was a customer, I put my hand up to keep from bumping into her. That’s when she just disappeared.” Harvey says that she was so surprised to see the ghost that all she can remember is that Gertie was about 5’3” tall and had long hair. “We’d heard that there was possibly a cemetery here at one time, and there was a jail nearby for many years,” said Harvey.

A summertime thunder storm in Tomball earlier this year didn’t sit well with Gertie, Harvey said. “The thunder and lightning was incredible during the night,” she said. “When we opened the shop the next morning it was a mess. There were picture frames and all sorts of things everywhere on the floor.”

One of the old homes there is the Griffin House, constructed in the early 1860s by renowned builder Eugene Pillot. This beautifully restored example of Civil War era architecture comes complete with a bonus . . . its own apparition in the attic.

A paranormal investigation was conducted at Spring Creek Park in 2008 with results showing evidence of unexplained responses, shadowy images and psychic impressions. Could these have been the spirits of deceased soldiers of the Confederacy, drowning victims or possibly both? PHANTOM OF FANNIN STREET The turreted two-story home at the corner of South Walnut Street and Fannin doesn’t fit the image of a Victorian style “haunted house”, but years of alleged paranormal activities inside have forced the landlord to include a special clause in the lease agreement for renters. “My lease reads that paranormal activity is not grounds for terminating the lease contract,” said current resident Rocky Pilgrim. Pilgrim, a local attorney, had heard the stories of the house before moving in but was skeptical; that is until things began to happen that she couldn’t logically explain. “As the story goes, two spinsters lived in the house alone and for whatever reason one of them hanged herself from a beam in the second floor loft,” she said. Former residents have told tales of children at play upstairs hearing voices telling them to “get out” and “Leave . . . I don’t like you”. On more than one occasion vases, stacks of paper and other inanimate objects have been known to migrate from one space to another within the house

By December 2009 Gajus Stappen and Harold Weinkum (remember them from the original POWER PIPES videos?) had formed a new(?) bagrock group, CELTICA PIPES ROCK. Astoundingly, Gajus’ new band featured all the original Austrian members of the former POWER PIPES (except Saskia and Cam!), along with NEW male and female pipers, and played instrumental covers of rock and heavy metal classics! Like many other musical groups, CELTICA PIPES ROCK has experienced some personnel changes. In 2011 Matthias Katsmair (who conducts his own drum school in his off-time) replaced Lukas Rausch on drums. Duncan Knight (formerly of the 1st Battalion Royal Scots and the Royal Scots Borderers) replaced John McLean Allen (who went on to found the LA-based Celtic Rock band STAND EASY https://youtu.be/dTTaEPpkNT4) on the bagpipe. Gwendolen Rowe left in the spring of 2013 to focus on her family. [NOTE: she left right before their show at the San Antonio Highland Games and Music Festival, darn it! So they only had one piper for that show. I volunteer at that fest every year, and worked backstage/sound crew for that show, which is one of the times/places I got to hang with the band - a little bit, anyway.] In September 2013 Gwendolen was finally replaced by Jane Espie, formerly of SAOR PATROL (who still maintains a solo career as ‘The Phantom

Piper’ and every now and then drops out of the group for short periods/ shows.) Jane’s first public appearance with CELTICA PIPES ROCK was at the 2013 Sherwood Forest Celtic Music Fest http://www.sherwoodforestfaire.com/ - she still didn’t quite have all the groups’ stage movements and choreography down yet. In the spring of 2014 Josy Svajda left the group for a solo career https:// www.josysvajda.com/. In the spring of 2015 classical violinist Aya Georgieva joined, bringing a change to the groups’ musical style. Her first public appearance was at the 2015 San Antonio Highland Games and Music Festival (where, unfortunately, I was working the hospitality table instead of the stage, that year.) Since their beginning, CELTICA PIPES ROCK had kept the same basic appearance – kilted/punk – and mostly Celtic/Rock music. In their first album, “The Rising”, all the music was all instrumental, a mix of Celtic, rock, and mash-ups of both! Their second album, “The Voyage”, contained both instrumental and vocal (mostly pub/festival sing-along type songs), all with a basic nautical theme. Their third album, “Legends and Visions” again contained both instrumental and vocal, with somewhat of a Celtic theme.

But in 2016, preparatory to the release of their new album “Steamphonia”, however, what the band labeled a “re-launch” - a complete appearance and music style change materialized for the group! ‘Visitors II: Contact’ https://youtu. be/ROxbBkH5jkg from the movie soundtrack was their last video release as a Celtic-appearing band. Appearance-wise, all the members abandoned the kilted/punk look for complete Victorian-style Steampunk/Goth attire – goggles, top hats, brocade vests and trousers, tulle and lace – an extreme makeover! Their music also dispensed with much of its early Celtic/Rock flavor, as well. Instead, the band has gone for a ‘more full-blown symphonic sound’ (as they term it), they now use off-stage backing instruments/band with an organ, even an operatic singer and a choir on some pieces. ‘Megawatt” is an example of their new style https://youtu.be/ RqHYAnW6lKY. Gajus also got involved in filmmaking, leading to the award-winning short film ‘Full Steam Ahead!’ starring the band https://youtu.be/ Ie2tSQV4Nuw Time will tell if the Steampunk fan base is as strong as the Celtic fan base was – maybe even a melding of the two! As I said earlier, I have seen CELTI-

CA PIPES ROCK on several occasions – two years at the San Antonio Highland Games and Celtic Music Festival (3 or 4 shows each time), and at the 2013 Sherwood Forest Celtic Music Fest (I think 5 shows that weekend!) Here’s the video of an entire Sherwood show https://youtu.be/aojO9ImMMkk - the first on-stage appearance of Jane Espie with the group. (And if you look hard enough, you might spot the back of my head!) The most memorable (to me) was their (non)-show at the North Texas Irish Festival (I believe it was March 2014 – not totally sure) – which was snowed out by an unseasonable blizzard and cancelled before the middle of the first day. I couldn’t get out of Dallas – no one could in the blizzard! We ended up spending the weekend in the same hotel as the group - got to spend a little bit of time with them there. Check their website: http://celticarocks.com/news/ for upcoming US tour dates. So far, this year CELTICA PIPES ROCK are only scheduled to be at the Milwaukee Irish Fest in August, the Tulsa Scotfest in September, the St. Louis Scottish Games also in September and the Revel at Young's Grove in Turlock, CA in October.

PAMELA GRAHAM OF LE PAM’S HOUSE OF CREOLE by Matt Vernon Chef Pamela Graham owns and operates Le Pam’s House of Creole. Chef Pam is an inspiration and a mentor to me. The first time I met her, she gave me a big hug, called me baby and started handing me samples of her scratch made Creole. (She still does that today! Those slow cooked oxtails just melt in your mouth!) Her passion for food came later in life. At first, she wanted to be a

hairdresser. She got her cosmetology license and worked doing ladies hair. She laughs when she remembers a customer named Ms. Willie Mae who told her. “You do beautiful hair, but that’s not your gift!” That customer kept coming back and asking why was she still there. Chef Pam decided to go to study food and graduated from the Culinary Institute of New Orleans. She told me she would never volunteer to be chef for the day. One day, her teacher, Chef B, volunteered her. She went up, worked her magic and the teacher

said, “I knew you could cook, but not this good.” She earned student of the month! Once she got a taste of the food world, she realized the love and the talent she possessed. She graduated a chef and went to work for Aramark, the country’s largest food provider. She told me she learned a lot from working there about banquets, bartending, presentation, etc. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Chef Pam moved to California. Chef Pam is an incredibly friendly, ultraintelligent Chef, who loves to cook,

loves to laugh and loves to tell stories. I had a great time interviewing her. She subtlety mentioned the time when Snoop Dog’s manager called her and asked her to cater the BET Awards. In California, she opened Pam’s Creole Catering. I believe once she was self-employed, the dream continued to materialize. In addition to being a trained, respected, hard-working and gifted chef, she is also a proud mother of 8. Bragging about her kids, she told me she has 2 Marines, 2 nurses and one has a double-masters. Whatever she chooses to do, she

pours all her heart and soul into. After the last son graduated, Chef Pam and her husband moved to Houston and opened Le Pam’s House of Creole. She said to get the word out about her restaurant she would put her chef coat on, in the Texas heat, with flyers and samples and go to every business along 1960 introducing herself. Soon, word spread and people starting find out she has the best Creole food this side of the Sabine

River. I had the honor of working an event with her and she was amazing. She has been featured in the Houston Press, Public News and on the Debra Duncan show. She has also been in the national spotlight with Travel Destinations with Andrew Zimmerman. Chef Pam just signed a new multi-year lease at her location, so go support one of the most talented chefs in Houston!
