I’m not dead. Not even close. I was very sick, but not dead. Really I’m not. But while I was in recovery mode, the Public News was put on ice. Then, on the day that this publication was to be relaunched, I found myself in the ER with Ken Petty a reinjured knee. A badly reinjured knee. To quote my good friend and Public News writer, Nick Rama. “Can you please stop falling apart, sir.” As much as it was worth a chuckle, there was an element of truth to the concern. Ken Petty, the guy who wears most of the hats at the Public News, had been falling apart in more than one way. Illness, a pending divorce, injuries, etc, etc, etc. but what was incredible was that all the advertisers stayed with us. They believed in us because we believed

in the mission of being a locally owned independent arts and entertainment newspaper. Rosanne Friedman, former art editor for the Public News gave me a call a few weeks ago and rallied my spirit with a sort of eulogy/thank you that brought me to tears. She knew what I was going through and that phone call is what got me excited enough to start planning the return of the Public News. So many thanks to go around to everyone who lifted me up, gave me rides, lent me thier car (yeah, I gave the car up to the soon-to-be ex) and gave me new business to breathe life to the Public News. Thank you to Bart, Jean, Nick, Ashley, Rosanne, Glen, Gria, Eric, Rudy, Dale, Terry, Curtis and, in some ways, Mary. Sorry if I missed anyone. It’s time for the Public News’ second act. Let’s do this! In the meanwhile, I will do my best to keep myself together.

TO THE REPUBLIC

Is PTS a worse epidemic than PTSD? by Bart Pearston With school back in session, I thought this item was timely. Recently the superintendent of schools in Clark County, Indiana, Andy Melin proposed that beginning in 2017 there be no more recognition for valedictorian or salutatorian. The reason he gave was,” The competition sometimes between the students who are vying for those titles … gets to a point where it’s almost counterproductive.” The School Board will consider replacing it with a “Top 5%” recognition and a “Top 10%” recognition. This is not the same as Collegiate “Magna, Cum, and

Summa Cum Laude acknowledgement because it eliminates the “Top1%” Summa Cum Laude grouping. As an ex secondary public school counselor, I am well aware of the gamesmanship that goes on between students competing for the higher cum average and rank. Both are major factors in college scholarship and admission acceptance. Why is this important you may ask? My grandchildren play in “everybody gets a trophy” noncompetitive FFPS and my son in Special Olympics. I understand that when dealing with elementary or special needs “athletes” we should not ignore the need to minimize the need to win at all costs. As a public school coach for a dozen years, there is much to be said about players who understand the need for discipline and practice to become excellent. TEN of my ex-players received athletic scholarships because they applied this to both academics and

soccer in high school. I am not trying to minimize the epidemic of PTSD for our returning veterans and the ongoing failure of our VA to treat them. 22 vets commit suicide each DAY in our country. This gets a lot of press but little to no action from our government. I hope it will be a major issue in the upcoming debates. In The Council for a Strong America’s recently published report on the YOLO generation, “America Unprepared’ they conclude: “Data shows that young Americans are struggling to become productive members of society on multiple measures.” Our youth is our future is an old frequently quoted axiom. The “Participation Trophy Syndrome” (credit to Todd Starnes) has come full circle. The statistics in the report are alarming, but you won’t see them in the politically charged media quagmire outside The Public News. I suggest you google it and read it for yourself. It includes a state rating for each state; Texas gets a “D”. For example, 1 in 7 YOLO’s (age 16-24) are unemployed and NOT involved in any schooling or training or service to become so. 1 in 4 have a criminal record for mostly drug offenses. The military has publicly expressed their attention to student athletes who can compete physically because 70% of seniors are unable to qualify. My last article about the “Changing American family” confirms what the Council concluded as the major cause of this phenomenon. “Just as a stable childhood contributes to better health in young adulthood, disruption in early childhood can lead to a host of negative outcomes. The experience of serious emotional and physical trauma is much more common than one might imagine: 23 percent of American children have experienced at least two traumatic events, which range from abuse or neglect, to parental divorce, to witnessing violence or drug abuse.”

Lone Star College-Montgomery examines the aging process in seven-week series CONROE (Aug. 29, 2016) – America is obsessed with being young, looking beautiful and staying hip, but aging is inevitable and the process can teach us valuable lessons. Join Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) as we look into the challenges and triumphs of the elderly or ‘Super Adults’ with “Pathways to Aging and Beyond: Seminars for ‘Super Adults.’” The series will be held Tuesdays from 1-2 p.m. beginning Sept. 13 through Oct. 25 at LSC-University Center at The Woodlands. “As I have been aging, I have gotten more interested in the attitudes, treatment and culture provided for older people,” said Dr. David Gottlieb, series organizer and presenter. “Dying is Dr. Gottlieb believes in encouraging inevitable, but when it comes to how scholarly growth for the older set. we age, we have a lot of options.” This first-of-its-kind series will discuss a variety of topics hosted by different presenters. Some tackle the uniqueness of aging for women, the ability to live in one’s own home independently and the role music and jazz can play in the aging process. “These Seminars for ‘Super Adults’ will provide our community with an opportunity to discuss important questions about life and aging,” said Dr. Rebecca Riley, LSC-Montgomery president and seminar presenter. “Dr. Gottlieb is a respected member of our community, and we are lucky to have him sharing his perspective and overseeing these events on our campus. Each session will highlight a different lens through which to view aging with the help of nationally known authors and speakers as well as local experts. The lessons learned will warrant serious reflection long after the seminars are over.”

“The best thing that can happen to people as we age is to face more intellectual challenges,” said Dr. Gottlieb. “The more you use your brain, the slower your brain deteriorates and an active brain has been proven to increase your longevity. Throughout this series we want older people to know they are of great value. They are a very essential human resource for our society. ‘Super Adults’ have done so much for us and our culture, in return we should be doing as much to help them.”

PUBLIC NEWS MUSIC Six of the songs on this album are covers – but the other six are the brothers’ own compositions, now Surf Rock era classics! Patrick and Candido “Lolly” Vasquez were brothers from Fresno, California of mixed Yaqui, Shoshone and Mexican heritage. Their Cajun uncle (don’t ask me!) heavily influenced their early music, and for most of their early careers they self-identified as ‘Cajun’, until apparently ‘Native American’ became more profitable (?) in the late 60’s. Even in later years, the brothers (especially Pat) still often referred to themselves as Cajun! The Vasquez brothers began playing professionally on the LA music scene in the late 50’s. They formed a trio in early 1960 with Ed Creech (who has never been listed as a band member in any official history), primarily playing (and composing) the Surf Rock that was popular there and then. During this era, the Pat and Lolly played under the group names of (among others) the Vazquez Brothers, the Avantis, the Routers, Surfer’s Stomp, Let’s Go, Out of Limits, the Sharks, and released a number of 45’s, of which only two by The Sharks have surfaced in modern times. By 1963 Pat and Lolly had changed VARGAS BROTHERS their names to ‘Vargas’ and their duo name to The Vargas Brothers – their MARK’S MUSICAL MUSINGS agent convinced them that two Mexicans singing Surf Rock would never make it big! (I personally don’t see much difference between ‘Vasques’ and ‘Vargas’ – but I’m not a Hollywood agent – and they did start making it big, sic? Remember Starlord’s little dance on them – NOT the kind of music I WHO SANG STARLORD’S at least!) number at the beginning of the film, was listening to in ’74! Hence, I then THEME SONG? In 1964 the brothers were in two during the credits? “Come and Get researched the musical group Redbone. groups simultaneously, the Marquettes I’m sure you are all liked the Marvel Your Love” was the song. Catchy tune, Turns out Redbone was formed in Universe graphic novels series ‘The and the Deuce Coupes; both of these good beat, easy to dance to – I give it a 1970 by Pat and Lolly Vegas, two of the groups were also concurrent members Guardians of the Galaxy’ (NOT to be 9 (and if you remember the TV music greatest (and I mean that!) musicians confused with DC Comics graphic of the Shin-Diggers (later Shindogs), show THAT reference is from, you are of the 1960’s, that you probably have novels series ‘The Guardians of the the ‘Shindig’ TV music show house even older than me!) – the recording band, not the touring band. The brothers were established LA session musicians, song and lyric writers, regularly recording with Elvis, Ike and Tina Turner, Sonny and Cher, James Brown, Little Richard and Jimi Hendrix, among others. Leon Russell regularly used them in recordings at the LA recording studio he ran. In 1964, Pat and Lolly wrote the soundtrack and music for a movie, The Nasty Rabbit (Russian spies trying to smuggle plague-infected rabbits into Montana), and made musical appearances in it. Oh, Pat wrote The Munsters TV show (1964) theme song. In 1966, The Vargas Brothers were the house band at The Haunted House, one of the more popular and outlandish - you entered the club through a Horror Museum (it was Sonny and Cher’s favorite club! WOW!) - Sunset Strip dance clubs when their album was recorded there. A number from this album, recorded live, was featured in a pro-feminist beach movie It’s a Bikini World (1967). If all that isn’t busy enough, the brothers likewise played in the Los Vegas area during this same period, as the Crazy Cajun Cakewalk Band – playing Cajun music! In 1968, Pat and Lolly, along with Peter DePoe and Tony Bellamy, formed the first Native American band (with Mexican and Cajun roots). The brothers, especially Pat, have always asserted that Jimi Hendrix (who claimed one-fourth Cherokee blood) was the inspiration behind them recognizing

their “native heritage”. Redbone got their first recording contract in 1969, and released their self-titled debut album in 1970. Over the years, they have released 19 albums – if you include the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack! Redbone’s music style is soft-ish rock, with R&B, Cajun, Jazz, tribal, and Latin accents, and they perform in “Native” garb – which at times runs the gamut from buckskin and war paint to Los Vegas feathers, spangles and rhinestones! Their stage shows often feature costumed professional Native American exhibition dancers adapting traditional Native dances to their music. In 1973, Redbone released the politically focused “We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee” (about the 1890 massacre of more than 150 unarmed Lakota Sioux Natives by the Seventh Cavalry at Wounded Knee, South Dakota). This song was banned from radio play in the US for many years! In 2008, Redbone was inducted into the Native American Music Association Hall of Fame, and in to the NY Smithsonian in 2013 In 2014, Pat Vargas was honored with the Lifetime Achievement “Legend” Award from the “West Coast American Indian Music Awards. Original Redbone member Tony Belamy passed away in 2009, and Lolly Vargas passed away in 2010, at which time Redbone disbanded. Pat Vargas continues to maintain the original Redbone band web page, which is also updated with news about his solo albums and his tours with his new band, Peacepipe.
