LETTER RIP

JADE HELM 15 STARTS NEXT WEEK Not to worry you, but if the Public News disappears, start hoarding food and water I’ve heard about the wars and rumors of wars, but Jade Helm is something completely out of left field. Let’s start off with the obvious. This is the first fullscale military exercise conducted in the lower 48. To be more precise, the lower 10; the ten states that comprise the entire southern border of the United States. Among these ten states, three have been tagged as hostile (Utah, Texas and Florida), noted with the hot pink color on the map provided in this article. On Wednesday, July 15th, all hell breaks loose, or does it? This is the day that the Armed Forces of the United will come to ‘occupy’ Ken Petty States these ten states. The government has attempted to calm jittery nerves of the citizens of these ten states, but to no avail. After all, isn’t the word ‘government’ code for someone named Obama? This is the government who chastised certain people who “cling to their guns and religion”. Funny how Utah (religion), Texas (guns) and Florida (sandy beaches and retired folks) are tagged as the hostile ones. Texas Governor Abbott thinks that the Federal Government cannot be trusted. I’ll interpret this for Public News readers. Texas cannot trust the Commander-In-Chief of these armed forces, since this particular Commander-In-Chief has had his hand caught in the cookie jar of lies too many times! Once a liar, always a liar? Lying, it’s a hard habit to break. Texas has recently put together a counter measure called Operation Counter Jade Helm. I take this as

Abbott’s saber rattling at its best. Or, could it be that Abbott is aiming to be the third straight Texas Governor to run for US President. Now before anyone starts chattering about a future President who cannot walk, I remind you that there was such a man who served as US President for over 12 years, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a Democrat. I know that politician words are cheap and are spent like a drunken sailor with a bottomless bank account, but Abbott may prove me wrong. In fact, I hope he does. Jade Helm concerns me as it should

you. Let’s assume that we should prepare for the worst, like a hurricane that lasts for months. What should we do, aside from moving out of the pink states? First, hoard all the canned goods you can. Second, stockpile drinking water. Third, start growing your own food. I know that this is illegal, but dire times demand drastic measures. Fourth, own some chickens and a rooster or two. In essence, make your backyard a farm. That should provide you with enough meat and eggs to survive for a while. Plus, eggs make

a great bartering tool for those of you who laugh off Jade Helm. Fifth, talk to your neighbors and care for each other. God knows that the government has a history of not being able to do this right. Since the Federal Government has an internet kill switch, plus the power to deflate the value of our currency, and the power to raid our banks and take our homes. Just like they have had taking away freedoms that American’s have enjoyed since the Founding. Our fight is about to become very real, very quickly. Or all this could just be a bunch of hooey.

LEGENDARY GROUP THE LETTERMEN TO PLAY CONROE WITH 18-PIECE ORCHESTRA Sharity Productions in association with John Wiesner Automotive present the Stars Over Texas Concerts with the Grammy Award Winning and Legendary Vocal Group The Lettermen with eighteen members of the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the Historic Crighton Theatre in Downtown Conroe, Texas. The Lettermen are Tony Butala, Donovan Tea and Bobby Poynton. This legendary vocal group will be live on stage with eighteen members of the Conroe Symphony Orchestra performing their greatest hits like “Goin Out of My Head”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”, “When I Fall in Love”, “Put Your Head on My Shoulder”, “Theme from A Summer Place”, “Hurt So Bad”, “Love is a Many Splendored Thing”, “Mr. Lonely”, and more, which made this legendary vocal group a 50 Year career sensation. The one change Tony Butala, original and founding member of The Lettermen, would have made in the 50 plus year career of one of the most popular vocal groups in history is a surprising one. “We chose the wrong name!” he exclaims. “In the late 50’s, when you started a vocal group and wanted to stand out from the crowd, all you had to do was use a novel new name that would give your group a unique look and image.” “If you are a new group in today’s world and you want to get noticed, you have to dye your hair purple or pink, multi-pierce your face, ears and tongue, and even then you may not be different enough to get any notoriety.” In the late 50’s, most vocal groups had school type names such as Danny & the Juniors, The Four Freshmen and The Four Preps. The Lettermen chose the name The Lettermen and wore letter

sweaters. By the time those names became passé in the early sixties, The Lettermen had already had a few hit singles and albums, and were a tremendous success in Colleges and nightclubs. Capitol Records, The Lettermen’s record label, was reluctant to try to market a new name as The Lettermen wanted, due to the fact that it was already an established world-wide name. They did pack away the sweaters in moth-balls, and fortunately, their fans and the general public have gotten past the sweaters, and the name and image for the last five decades definitely means The Lettermen. The Lettermen name first appeared in February 1958 on the marquee of the Desert Inn Hotel Resort Showroom in Las Vegas Nevada, where Butala, Mike Barnett and Talmadge Russell performed in the record-shattering revue, “Newcomers of 1928,” which starred big band leader Paul Whiteman, silent film comic Buster Keaton, singers Rudy Vallee and Harry Richmond, film star Fifi D’Orsay and the sneezing comedian Billy Gilbert. Butala played the part of Bing Crosby, who sang lead in the “Rhythm Boys” the vocal group that had hits and toured in the 1920’s with Paul Whiteman’s Orchestra. The vision of The Lettermen was of three very strong soloists who also had the ability and showmanship to perform and entertain an audience, but who also had the discipline needed to be group singers. The sound they came up with was a sound between the big band vocal groups such as the Modernaires, Pied Pipers, Mills Brothers, Four Freshmen and the early R&B rock groups such as

25,000 PLUS SMASH TOMBALL’S FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION ATTENDANCE RECORD The city of Tomball’s annual July 4th Celebration and Street Party presented by Allied Siding & Windows continues to break attendance records. More than 25,000 visitors filled the half mile stretch of Business Highway 249 just north of FM 2920 for the evening street party of live music, food, kids’ activities and a spectacular fireworks display; this was an attendance increase of 18 percent over 2014. With few available parking spaces throughout the entire “Four Corners” area, City officials estimate that more than 50,000 guests were on-hand citywide to enjoy a little tailgating and the aerial explosions following the street party.

Entertainment included a patriot tribute to American by local talent Valeria Hill followed by classic rock band, The Bottle Rockers who literally had them dancing in the streets until after dark. Thousands of mini American flags were distributed by Allied Siding & Windows and there was even an appearance by Tomball’s mascot, Rusty Rails and

continued from page 5 the Ink Spots, Flamingos and the Platters. Butala began singing professionally at age seven in Sharon, Pennsylvania and by the age of eight was singing on KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh, PA. Within a few years, he moved to Hollywood, California to become a member of the famous Mitchell Boys Choir, who since 1932 had appeared in over one hundred motion pictures, scores of television and radio shows, radio & television commercials, and world-wide concert tours. While in the choir, he appeared in such classic films as “White Christmas”, “War of the Worlds”, “On Moonlight Bay”, was the voice of one of the “Lost Boys” in the classic Walt Disney animated film “Peter Pan”. He was the singing voice of child actor Tommy Rettig in the Doctor Seuss script, Stanley Kramer production, “5000 Fingers of Doctor T”, released by Columbia Pictures. In the mid-fifties, while attending Hollywood

Professional High School, Butala formed The Fourmost, a vocal group of three ex-Mitchell Boy Choir friends and a female classmate, Concetta Ingolia. In a few years, after moderate local success, Concetta exited the group to be cast in a new TV series, “Hawaiian Eye,” and used her stage name Connie Stevens. By 1960, The Lettermen - now Butala, Jim Pike and Bob Engemann - were signed to Warner Brothers Records and released their first singles: “Their Hearts Were Full of Spring” b/w “When” and “The Magic Sound” b/w “Two Hearts.” In 1961, Nic Venet, a new, young, creative A&R man with Capitol Records who years earlier had written a few songs with Butala, was played these first records. Venet was impressed by their unique natural close harmonic blend and, convinced that he could produce a hit record with them, signed them to what turned out to be an over twenty-five year contract with Capitol Records.

NORTH HOUSTON TENANT GOES TO WASHINGTON Joins with Tenants Nationwide to Advocate for Affordable Housing A North Houston tenant recently returned from the National Alliance of HUD Tenants (NAHT) Conference in Washington, D.C. Cynthia Alexander, a resident of Woodland Christian Towers on Tidwell Road, attended the three day conference where she received leadership training, and met with top-level U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) officials. Woodland Christian Towers provides affordable housing for elderly, disabled, and low income people through HUD’s project-based Section 8 program. From June 21 to 23, NAHT held their 21st annual Save Our Homes Conference in Washington, D.C. During the conference, Mrs. Alexander was joined by tenants from around the United States to meet with congressional staff, attend workshops, and elect the Board of Directors of NAHT, the only national membership organization of resident groups advocating for lower income families in privatelyowned, HUD-assisted multifamily housing. For the first two days, conference workshops covered affordable housing loss, strategies to preserve troubled housing, and how to build and sustain a tenant group. The second day involved participants meeting with top-level administrators from HUD. Mrs. Alexander was motivated to attend the conference because she serves on the steering committee of the tenant association at Woodland Christian Towers. About the conference, Mrs. Alexander said, “I enjoyed meeting tenants from around the country and hearing about the issues they are facing. I hope to learn from their experiences to better address issues at Woodland Christian Towers.” Mrs. Alexander explained that tenants at Woodland

Christian Towers had experienced elevator outages as a result of the floods on Memorial Day and are facing temporary relocation due to future renovations. Mrs. Alexander and the steering committee of the Woodland Christian Towers Tenant Association have been working with the Texas Tenants’ Union (www.txtenants.org), a nonprofit organization in Dallas that seeks to empower tenants in Texas through education and organizing to protect their rights, preserve their homes, improve their living conditions, and enhance the quality of life in their communities. Through the Texas Tenants’ Union, Mrs. Alexander and other steering committee members were put in contact with HUD administrators, elected officials, and management agents to voice their thoughts and concerns. In addition to Mrs. Alexander, tenants from HUD properties across Texas also attended the conference, including Rachel Williams of the Sunlight Manor Apartments in Beaumont who serves on the Board of Directors of NAHT as Vice-President and the representative of the Southwest Region. Each year, the Texas Tenants’ Union helps send HUD tenants in Texas to this conference. In addition to Houston and Beaumont, this year’s group included tenants from HUD properties in San Antonio and Orange. The National Alliance of HUD Tenants (www. saveourhomes.org) is a national organization of tenant groups in HUD housing like Optimist Village. Organized in 1991, NAHT works to preserve affordable housing, protect tenants’ rights, and promote resident control and ownership in lowincome housing.

For their debut Capitol single record in the summer of 1961, Capitol Records decided to put a ballad on the B-side of “That’s My Desire,” their doo-wop single, figuring DJs would have to play the A-side because the B-side was so sweet, and slow, and did not necessarily encompass the commercial sound of the day. That B-side was “The Way You Look Tonight”. Soft, melodic and romantic, it was a departure from the rock ‘n’ roll of the day and listener requests made it a must for DJ play lists nationwide. The song shot to No. 13 on the Billboard chart. The group’s second single that year did even better, “When I Fall In Love,” another soft, slow ballad hit No. 7, establishing The Lettermen as the most romantic singing group of the sixties. The next year, “Come Back Silly Girl” reached No.17 and The Lettermen’s debut album, “A Song for Young Love”, hit the Top 10, their first of 32 straight Top 40 Albums.

Butala’s breathy vocals were the lead on most of The Lettermen many hit records, except “Theme From A Summer Place”. In almost every poll, The Lettermen were named Best New Group or Best Vocal Group as two more albums followed in 1962 - “Once Upon A Time” and “Jim, Tony and Bob”, the latter an effort to segue away from The Lettermen name. The ‘60’s and early ‘70’s saw The Lettermen score over 25 chart hit singles, including “Theme From ‘A Summer Place” (No. 16, 1965, from the Sandra Dee/Troy Donahue film), “Goin’ Out of My Head/Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” (No. 7, 1968, the first hit record ever to completely integrate two songs as one) and “Hurt So Bad (No. 12, 1969). Their signature sound made romantic standards of songs such as “Smile,” “Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” “Shangri-La,” “Love,” “Traces/Memories” and on and on. For tickets call (936) 441-SHOW (7469)

Note that an additional matinee has been added the last weekend on Saturday at 2pm. 14 Pews presents The Fever Mondays starting July 13 through August 3, 2015 7:30pm 14 Pews 800 Aurora St., Houston, TX 14 Pews will present their first theatrical production, The Fever, by the Obie-winning playwright Wallace Shawn. The one-man play explores what is going on through the mind of a man as he writhes in pain and disgust, shivering through what remains of the hot night on the cold tiles of the bathroom floor in his electricity-bereft hotel room. He muses on his own privileged life and tries to put into words the feelings that explode when an inwardlooking aesthete meets the brutal world and sees it for what it is, and sees himself as a collaborator against the poor. Most of the performances of The Fever will be held a luxury suite at the elegant La Colombe D’Or Hotel, honoring how the playwright originally wanted the play to be performed - in front of no more than 20 people. However, Monday nights will be Industry Night, where people can Pay-What-They-Can and will be performed at 14 Pews. Admission is on a pay-what-you-can basis with a suggested donation of $20. ASK JODY

THE BOYFRIEND VS THE GUY FRIEND, KEEPING THE NEWBORN AWAY FROM GRANDMA by Jody Reed

jody.reed@publicnewsonline.com

Dear Jody, I am in a situation and not sure what to do. I started dating this guy “Trent” a few weeks ago, and I really like him. However, my best guy friend has very recently expressed romantic interest in me. I told him that I didn’t want to ruin our friendship and wanted to see where things go with this other guy, but then I ended up agreeing to go on a “trial date” with him just to see if there was anything Jody Reed beyond friendship. He reassured me that if I didn’t feel the same way that he would pretend nothing had happened and our friendship would carry on as before. Well, we had the date and he was superromantic, which is not something I had ever seen before in him. He gave me a kiss at the end of the night, and I actually felt that he could be more than a friend. He obviously knows that I am dating Trent, but Trent doesn’t know that I went on a date with my best guy friend. Or that I want to continue to go out with him. What should I do, and how do I decide which guy is right for me? Split Decision Dear Split Decision, My best advice to you is to never be The Bachelorette and date 25 guys at the same time! Okay, so you have a big decision to make, but you don’t have to decide right away. The important thing is to be honest with both guys and let them know that you are not ready to be in an exclusive relationship at this point. If they are okay with that, then you can continue to see both and see where things go. If one of them is not okay with you dating other people, then I guess you will need to decide right away. Make a list of pros and cons and rank them from a scale of 15 based on how you prioritize them. For example, you may have “shares the same faith as me” as

10

JULY 9 - 22, 2015

a pro ranked as a 5, being highest priority, and then have “wears cool sunglasses” as a pro ranked as a 1, lowest priority. Tally the scores for each column and compare the results to give you insight. Which one brings out the best in you and you the best in him? Keep in mind that a great relationship usually has being each other’s best friend as a priority! Jody Dear Jody, My grown daughter is about to give birth to her second baby. We are all so excited! The only problem is that she has recently told me that she doesn’t want anyone to come stay and help her after the baby is born, including me. She really doesn’t want anyone to come around until the baby is 3 weeks old. She lives out of state, so I can’t just pop in at the hospital. I really want to go see my grandchild in person right after he’s born, but I also want to respect my daughter’s wishes. What should I do? Confused Grandma Dear Confused Grandma, You must be feeling sad about your daughter’s decision. I’m sure she loves you and doesn’t want you to feel dejected. Maybe your daughter feels like it would be too much to have overnight guests, even if they are family. As helpful as you may be, she may still feel pressure to be hospitable and make you comfortable as her guest, which would be added stress to her in recovering from having a baby, not to mention the lack of sleep she’ll be experiencing. She may want the transition of bringing home a new baby to be shared with just her household at first. I would suggest using something like Skype to interact with them for the first 3 weeks, and then go and stay for however long your daughter wants you to stay. If you can’t wait those 3 weeks, then ask your daughter if she would mind if you stay for a bit at a hotel so you can visit them for short periods during the day. That would probably be a winwin solution for the both of you! Jody

The evening will present a visually stimulating environment that promises to capture the audience’s imagination through a world where humans no longer identify with individuality and conform to the larger social mass. Integration opens with a glimpse into humanity’s potential future in a disavowed world depleted of all resources, and survival is not taken for granted. Laborers, religious fanatics, and beggars fill the stage as the remnants of a once thriving society, desperate and struggling to push on. The dancers move independently, yet, synchronously as a single breathing being each different and unique. Video projections depict an environment filled with dust and nothingness. Until one day when everything changes. Part two of Integration begins with a devastated earth where individuality has countermanded. The choreography is militaristic and sharp depicts a drone-like atmosphere. Video projections transport Integration to another world, and the introduction of a mutating box is the vehement symbol of conformity. Despite the overpowering of the individual, one character has preserved her sense of self. Will she escape, or be forced to conform? Integration features choreography by Jaime Frugé, costume design by Marissa Marsh, and lighting design by Mitchell Cronin. Video Projection, also by Frugé, will trigger the creation and destruction of a forsaken earth and the emergence of Integration’s dystopia. Integration promises to challenge the audience’s idea of choreography through the engineering and construction of a morphing confined space. Integration is native Houstonian Jaime Fruge’s choreographic debut in Houston. Jaime is a 2015 Frenetic Theater Artist Board Member and is excited to premiere her first full-length work as a part of the Artist Board Program on August 20th and 21st at 8 pm at Frenetic Theater. www.jaimefruge.com Cast includes Michelle Cantua, Anthony Davis, Kayla Hyde, Margaret Leary, Brianna, McCray, Michelle McKay, Katherine Turner, and Victoria Woods. TO THE REPUBLIC

THE RULE OF LAW

www.publicnewsonline.com SUBSCRIBERS ARE VOTERS IN THE READERS CHOICE AWARDS SUBSCRIBE TODAY DON’T MISS OUT ON BEING HEARD

commentary by Bart Pearston bart.pearston@publicnewsonline.com How important is the “rule of law”in a culture? The primary reason businesses and development occurs in the world’s more developed countries is that investors and entrepreneurs feel “safe” to risk their time and resources there. When there is widespread crime, lawlessness, and corruption, investment and development is scarce. We call these underdeveloped countries “Third World” because they lack the rule of law of first world (part of developed capitalist democracies) nor part of developed Communist totalitarian states. They almost always have either had a horrendous or civil war Bart Pearston revolution or have never been very developed and experienced a culture where the rule of law ever existed. Almost unheard of is a developed country sliding into 3rd World status because a lawless culture is abhorrent and to be avoided at all costs.

Fast forward 15 years to 2001 and the “Dream Act” pushed massive spending for “development, relief, & education of alien minors”. Estimates exceeded an additional 11 Million at the time. So much for the securing the borders and employment enforcement. Every poll shows a compassionate American populace willing to help those who “play by the rules” but not those who don’t. Estimated numbers of those here illegally now are around 20 Million. Enforcement of illegal hiring has dropped 86% since 2008. Recent heinous murders by Illegal Immigrants who have been deported repeatedly for felony convictions can no longer glossed over as “isolated incidents.” To excuse these miscreants with comparing them to those here legally makes no sense at all.

Every informed individual has heard the startling numbers of convicted felons released by our government. If not, just google it. I won’t waste your time repeating them. Less reported is that the majority of those “There is nothing wrong with For decades we here illegally now witnessed a steady receive some form of America that cannot be fixed by government assisdrop in the US crime rate and rising median what is right with America” tance, free medical age. VIBRATIONS IN STONE Remembering JesĂşs Bautista Moroles 1950-2015 story and photos by Rosanne Friedman rosanne.friedman@publicnewsonline.com 14

Once in a while you must stop and look up and see things that have been there all along-Beautiful things, Spiritual things. Upon learning that Jesús Moroles died in a car accident on June 15, 2015, was the moment for me to stop and see his sculpture in The Woodlands at the corner of Six Pines and Lake Robbins Drive, it is called Spirit Columns. There is lyricism in following the space between the granite columns of the Spirit Columns. John Cage, musician, said that the space between the notes is the essence of music. The silence between notes sets the rhythm. Hanya Holm, dancer, said that dance is made not on the step you take but between the steps and that is direction, focus and gathering power. To see the Spirit Columns means focus on the space between the columns as you walk around them or watch them move as you drive around them-- the columns wave. Moroles said that he wanted MORE from sculpture than objects and I look here and think, making these solid granite stone columns flow in space so much so that they are moving, is stretching the medium from solid to almost liquid. They flow and dance in space. The Police Memorial on 1400 Memorial Drive in Houston, Moroles’ largest work, offers static symmetry made to come alive when you

move through it. Climbing it like a labyrinth-to ascend you go up steps and then you walk around it to the next level to go up once more. When deciding about his piece Moroles talks about sitting at the site, admiring the space and wanting to resist doing anything to break the space apart. He recalls digging in the earth next to him and the idea came to him to allow the ziggurat like form to emerge from the groundusing the ground around it-- giving the mound an integrity of its beginning. The ziggurart becomes the positive space, the hollows around it on four sides becomes the negative spaces. In this park space of organic forms in the city Moroles created this precise geometric form but to climb it you must flow with it. A perfect completion for this place of reflection. It is the first memorial to recognize the ultimate sacrifice of police officers in the nation, Suzanna Moroles, Jesús’ sister tells me. Jesús Moroles wanted this to be a gathering place for the families of the police officers. Now a Memorial Service for Jesús is being planned for sometime in September at this sight. Moroles was the most generous of artists, allowing for others to interpret his work and thereby finishing his work with their understanding of it. He wanted to leave his stories out of the work giving room for others to find

their stories in his work. In one of the videos that shows Moroles working on, what will be one of his last, pieces for University of Science and Art of Oklahoma, a woman is offering a suggestion to carve a line across the sidewalk rather than have the sidewalk interrupt the field of the sculpture. He immediately embraced that idea and asked her to come and work on the sculpture to make it happen. This piece will be completed by the guidance of Moroles studio project manager, Kurt Kangas and the students/community of USAO, lamentably- post mortem.

yard for a year or more for him to move around, touch and consider. Granite spoke to him, he listened. He found gesture in the material and extended that gesture to it’s own resolution.

Of his influences you can see many--from Hispanic sources, Manuel Neri, he studied with Luis Jimenez, or the Central American source of the Mayan or Aztec. When he was studying stone in Italy—pulling stones from the same pit where Michaelanglo got his-- Jesus listed Eduardo Chillida as an influence. To those schooled in Modernism, he fits in as one of the lineup from the Post Minimalists- Robert Morris or from the art of the earthworks—Robert SmithGenerous with students, he was not one just to son. If your interests are things Japanese you demonstrate, his demonstrations were hands on see Toris and placement of rocks reminiscent of for all around. Yet he speaks of working with Zen Buddhism. Moroles was a spiritual person, the stone so intensely and only coming aware comfortable in all religions, be it Christian, or from his reverie to realize that he was surmaking Menorahs, or walking with Monks and rounded by a score or more of folks. He spoke finally creating what he called Spiritual Spaces about tearing the stone because if you opened for all. up the stone it would sparkle from within, if you simply carved it the granite would lose it’s Of those he influenced you see students well sheen and in a way it would die. He contrasted grounded in sensitivity of material. Creativity polishing stone with tearing it, like paper at its that was his was expansive, clear and sure. Cresurface and its deckled edge. Sensitive to the ativity that embraces all around and is fearless qualities of the stone he would design around in taking risks. Finally his desire is realizedwhat the stone would offer him, a rare white -his stones are not objects they are verbs. streak found in the speckles of granite was honored and illuminated in its place in the sculpture. Sometimes stones would be in his

FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY

FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY ANNOUNCE NEW LP ABSOLUTE HOPE, ABSOLUTE HELL DUE 10/2/15 Fit For An Autopsy have announced their all new LP Absolute Hope, Absolute Hell to be released Friday, October 2, 2015 via eOne / Good Fight Music. The new effort will be the highly anticipated follow up to Hellbound released in 2013. Hellbound garnered its own heap of high praise. Metal Injection touted it as being “dump-truck-status heavy that’ll be sure to destroy your soul,” while Metalsucks plainly states it was “all-caps FUCKING AWESOME.” Guitarist and producer Will Putney summed up the new album best, saying, “It’s our new and fresh approach to aggressive music, not a half-hour of blast beats and breakdowns.” While some heavy music fans love cliche, there has to be something more to add depth, breadth, scope, and staying power, and Fit For An Autopsy used that as a guiding principle for Absolute Hope, Absolute Hell. During the writing process, the band expanded their musical horizons and had the confidence to know that they possessed the skills to do something both different and inspired. That may sound very conceptual and esoteric, but once you turn the knobs as far to the right as they will go for Absolute Hope, Absolute Hell, which was selfproduced at The Machine Shop, it will all become clearer. When it came to writing and recording the new effort, the band narrowed itself on a specific goal. The previous album, Hellbound is aggressive and brutal, but as Putney noted, “After listening to more music, and expanding our palette, we realized we are capable of making a more interesting metal record. We saw lots of bands doing the same thing over and over. We thought, ‘We can expand on all of this in a way that is unique to us,’ so we approached the new album with that mentality, to break the mold of what we saw and heard, and to go outside of the limits of our genre.” Guitarist Pat Sheridan concurred, saying,

PUBLIC NEWS

“Absolute Hope, Absolute Hell is a much more personal journey into what the band sees going on in the world. Musically I have always been happy about our growth and this record is no different. Lyrically this record is very new for us. It’s about personal relationships gone to hell and how dark and hateful it can make you. It’s about watching the people who say they love you destroy you, it’s about the depressed state of our world because we treat each other like shit. It’s sad and dark, and even the music paints the picture before the lyrics can show you what the song is about. It’s something everyone can understand and tie into. Musically we have taken some huge steps reaching into different genres, writing with the record in mind and not just the song. This is the best work we have ever done.” Some of these changes will be immediately audible to Fit For An Autopsy fans. The band set up camp at The Machine Shop in New Jersey with guitar player and renowned producer Will Putney at the helm. The biggest change since then has been the band’s vocalist. After the departure of Nate Johnson earlier last year, Greg Wilburn (Oblige) briefly filled in so the band could carry out their touring plans. Just before the band entered The Machine Shop, they brought in Joe Badolato (Diamond Cutter) as the brand new full-time vocalist. “We found Joe at a perfect time,” says Putney. “We had just come off months of touring with a vocalist we knew wasn’t built to handle the lifestyle and stresses that come with being in a full-time band.” Badolato’s frontman status has remained rock solid during the band’s most recent tours. Putney concludes, “Joe is an extremely humble and down to earth dude and is a killer singer. Bringing him into Fit For An Autopsy has elevated the band to a really cool creative spot, and we’re excited about the future with him as our frontman.”

Bernie’s Backyard sits on 5 acres and has 7 different food trucks that will be conveniently located near Old Town Spring on the northbound feeder of Interstate 45 just past Spring Stubener but before the new Grand Parkway. Bernie’s is going to be a family destination. At the front of the property there is Bernie’s Icehouse, Nick Rama an indoor bar with plenty of seating, dartboards and some popular arcade style games. Bernie’s has plenty of parking and a lot of room to expand, with things like the upcoming Sweet Shoppe with ice cream, cakes and candy with a nostalgic feel. Bernie’s Backyard is a brand new concept for the area. Bernie’s is much more than a food truck park; it’s a destination for the whole family. It has beer and wines for the adults, shave ice for the kids, an outdoor stage with entertainment and a climate-controlled patio with four TV’s. In addition, The Feast of Artisans Farmer’s Market will be out there weekly and they have plans for car shows, live music, crawfish boils, corporate events and even a beer fest. The food trucks surround the stage area with outdoor covered & uncovered seating, bathrooms and even a hand washing station. Too hot to sit outside? Grab your food and bring it in to the air-conditioned area of the icehouse with TV’s and a digital jukebox. Go ahead and enjoy your food with an ice-cold beer or an adult frozen beverage. Adjacent to the icehouse is a nice size deck with chairs and tables. Overall, Bernie’s is already a hit in my opinion. The layout is great, the vibe is cool and laid back and the food trucks are all top notch. The soft opening began July third and will continue through July 24th. Their operating hours will be Tuesday through Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m and Friday and Saturday 11:00am to 10:00 pm. The Feast Of Artisans, a Farmers Market Fresh local produce, food and art. Feast of Artisans will be hosting a once a month market that will take place at Bernie’s Backyard. In order to allow more vendors to participate, they have decided on a Wednesday evenings for their market at Bernie’s Backyard with hours of 4pm - 8pm. They are still working on the exact start date. However, the market does intend to be at the grand opening. Feast of Artisan’s will have a wide variety of interesting local vendors. The list of vendors will be posted on their Facebook page as soon as all of the vendors are 100% confirmed. After starting and growing the Grogan’s Mill Farmers Market for four years (2007 - 2011), Lorraine Richardson (who started the market) wanted to expand on the idea of the framer’s market to include artisans of all varieties. That is how Feast of Artisans came about. Lorraine has added a new market manager, Megan Alejandrez, to help run this market. She will be taking care of most of the day to day things as well as being on site to manage the market. What you need to know: The market focuses on local producers, growers, farmers, crafters and artisans. Supporting local small vendors is very important to them. The idea is to have a place for local mom & pop vendors to sell their product to their local community. You can also find Feast of Artisans markets at the B-52 Brewery on the first Saturday of each month, 12-5pm, and at the Southern Star Brewery on the third Friday of each month, 5-9pm.

Boating and Boozing in Texas The Most Powerful Tool Know The Risks, Know Your Rights

We Possess: The Mind

by Matt DeLuca matt@mattdelucalaw.com

by Shanna Layne trainershanna@yahoo.com

With summer in full swing, many Texans head to the lake to enjoy the sun and water. In fact, Texas has more inland water than any other state in the country. For many, boating is a big part of summer recreation. And with boating, alcohol is often involved. But over the last few years, game wardens and other peace officers patrolling our lakes and rivers have become increasingly aggressive in the way that they investigate boaters for intoxication.

board your boat simply to do a safety inspection. And while conducting the inspection, if an officer sees alcoholic beverages or smells alcohol, the driver of the boat could be subject to investigation for BWI.

Obviously, determining whether someone is intoxicated on a boat can be problematic. Imagine spending all day out in the sun and water. Many standard signs of intoxication – poor balance, red eyes, the odor of alcohol – might all be present, intoxicated or not. And imagine the difficulty balancing while standing up in a boat that is rocking back and forth. Officers cannot use the traditional balancing tests to determine intoxication while on a boat. So with the recent Matt DeLuca Some of you may be boost in BWI investigation, many unfortunate surprised to learn that Boating While Intoxicated boaters could easily find themselves in a bad (or BWI) is a Class B Misdemeanor in Texas – spot. the same level offense as DWI. “Although you don’t need a driver’s license to drive a boat, a BWI could actually result in losing your driver’s license as well.”

Face it – you’re doomed. You are going to be overweight & out of shape for the rest of your life. You’ve failed at losing weight before, what makes you think you can do it this time? What if I said those words to you? What if your spouse, or your other family members or even your friends said that to you? First of all, I would never say that to you; hopefully no one else would ever Shanna Layne tell you that either. So why would you say those things to yourself? Our minds are the most powerful tools we have; when we fill our minds with negative self talk and doubt, we are setting ourselves up for failure. Sure, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and tell ourselves how horrible our life is because we aren’t as fit as Jenny or as successful as Dave, as intelligent as Ken... All of this negativity just creates a downward spiral. It’s a lot easier to sit around & perpetuate this “cycle of despair,” feel sorry for ourselves & think about how terrible our life is. True, it takes effort to break this cycle. We have to start by making a cognitive decision to change and take the necessary steps to improve our lives – and it all begins with our mindset. One of the best ways to start is by thinking back on all of your past accomplishments. What have you been successful at in the past? You can use your lap top, take notes on your phone or simply use a notebook and write down things as you remember them.

As the years go by, often we forget all of the things we have actually achieved throughout our lives! Maybe you’ve raised your children, or moved across the country, or made a career change and accepted a job that you wanted. Perhaps you have purchased a home or a car (or several); maybe you graduated from high school and/ or earned a college degree. Maybe you ran a mile for the 1st time, or a marathon. All of these things are accomplishments and it’s important to make note of all of these things as you think of them; just keep a “running list” of positive achievements – when you think of another one, add it to the list. Whenever someone gives you a compliment, add the compliment to your list. For example, it can be something that may seem insignificant like “You are so organized, I wish I could be more like you!” Let me tell you, all of those small compliments add up! We often remember when someone criticizes us, but we immediately forget when someone gives us a compliment. That’s why it is so important to add every compliment you receive to your list. Every time negative self-talk and doubt creep into your mind and you find yourself saying terrible things to yourself (things that you would never dream of saying to anyone else) – go and reference your list. Yes, re-read your list of compliments from other people and your list of accomplishments and positive traits about yourself. Replace the negativity and doubt with positive facts; it takes time to change your mindset but soon you will find yourself giving sincere compliments to people around you and living your life with a more positive outlook.

CRAMPTON’S MUSIC CIRCLE by Mark Crampton mark.crampton@publicnewsonline.com

JANET CARROLL

MORE THAN JUST AN ACTRESS THIS LADY COULD SING!

Janet Carroll is no longer with us, she passed back in May 2012, and I tell you, our world is much emptier without her! Janet was a highly successful actress on stage, screen and TV, as well as a singer of such vocal range- over 3 ½ octaves - as to be almost unmatched, then or now! Those of you who know me know that while I do love the theater, and watch movies (once they come to the machines!), I do not watch television, so I am not familiar with much of that part of Janet’s career. But I DO have three of her four released CD’s, and this lady could SING! Janet began classical musical training and formal theatrical schooling, both in Chicago, when she was only twelve. By the time she was in her 20’s, Janet was a professional actress at the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, Missouri, a major Mid-West theatrical venue, and had expanded her musical training from classical and opera to jazz, Broadway and gospel music. Janet’s next career move was to New York City, as First Soprano with the Canterbury Choral Society, with many appearances in major NYC music venues, including Carnegie Hall. Janet then returned to the stage, in Kansas City and Chicago, where she had a string of acting successes, primarily in musicals and some dramatic productions. In the early ‘80’s Janet moved on to stage productions in California. She soon graduated from the boards to the screen there, and enjoyed the next 30 years making over 20 movie appearances and dozens of guest and recurring roles on television. Of note, in 1983 Janet played Tom Cruise’s mother in Risky Business, and from 1994 – 97 played Gary, the owner of Gary’s Shoes (and Al Bundy’s boss) on Married With Children. Janet also established recurring roles on the

television shows Hill Street Blues, The Bronx Zoo, Murphy Brown, Melrose Place, and Still Standing. She also was quite active in television commercials during her Hollywood years. Janet did not forsake her stage roots during this time either, returning to Broadway from 2004 -05 in the musical production of Little Women. Where Janet holds my particular interest, however, is that in 1982 she formed her own 7-piece jazz band and was a constant performer at Jazz Fests through out North America for the next 29 years. With her incredible musical training and experience, coupled with her unbelievable 3 ½ octave vocal range, Janet sang traditional and modern jazz, Dixieland, swing, blues, ballads and torch music. I did not know until researching this article, and certainly wish I had known this back then, but Janet and her band were regular performers on the San Antonio River Walk in those years! I would gladly have driven to San Antonio ANY weekend she played to hear her! Janet’s first album as a singer was This Joint Is Jumpin’ Live! - Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band by trombonist and actor Conrad Janis in 1992. Her own solo albums: Presenting … Janet Carroll and the Hollywood Jazz Cats in 1992; I Can’t Give You Anything But Love in 2000; I’ll Be Seeing You also in 2000; and Lady Be Good in 2010 followed. I HAD all four CD’s – but Presenting vanished out of its case, and so far has been irreplaceable – but I keep searching! While Janet was working on the upcoming albums A Tribute to the Great Ladies of Song! and Scorch Your Shorts Torch Songs! in 2011, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. Janet underwent surgery and chemo, but never recovered or returned to the studio, and passed on May 22, 2012.

SEQUELS: HOW MANY IS TOO MUCH? story by Glen Ryan Tadych

glen.ryan.tadych@publicnewsonline.com

Each new Hollywood release typically carries a wealth of anticipation, but the turnout always varies. Though where the turnout becomes interesting is the debut of sequels, as a Hollywood sequel tends to carry more anticipation than other type of film. Glen Ryan Tadych any This year seems to be quite the time for sequels, and many more are

destined to hit theaters before 2020. From January to July we’ve had Taken 3, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Furious 7, Paul Blart: Mall Cop2, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Pitch Perfect 2, Mad Max: Fury Road, Insidious: Chapter 3, Ted 2, Magic Mike XXL and Terminator Genesys. At least nine more sequels await theaters for the remainder of the year, and 2016 will follow suit with just as many if not more. I constantly wonder where the drive for sequels originates. Sequels to blockbuster

smashes, like the inevitable Jurassic World sequel, are expected, but at times I feel Hollywood puts out sequels with no real interest among moviegoers. An example being Hot Tub Time Machine 2, where and at what time did any one person sit, watching Hot Tube Machine (2010), and think about wanting to see another? It’s the same with the second Mall Cop film. And what’s even more astonishing about movies like these is people actually flock to see them, as if they have nothing better to do. Surely no one can be that bored. Hell, if I want to provide my family

with cinematic entertainment on a Friday or Saturday night when nothing good is showing, I’m not going to take them to the Mall Cop 2. I’d much rather order pizza and put in Star Wars at home. Obviously some of these movies have their fans, and while I tend to have trouble wrapping my head around that fact, at the end of the day I still understand film is subjective and that one’s trash can be another’s treasure. I’ll even admit there are sequels I look forward to when the majority of others would rather brush them off. This was the case when Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) came out. Many were tired of the Pirates series, but I for one was disappointed with the first two sequels, and was more than pleased with the stand-alone nature and freshness of Stranger Tides. A fifth Pirates film is set to debut in 2017, and I’m sure I’ll hear the same fussing when the time comes. But given the continuing Marvel Cinematic Universe, return of Star Wars and eventual return of Indiana Jones—all under Disney’s belt—I don’t think Pirates will be carrying the same weight it did 10 years ago, and will soon meet its end. All in all, Hollywood sequels have become more of a commonality than they should perhaps, thanks to the overwhelming success of The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). And moviegoers will generally detest sequels and complain about lack of originality in Hollywood. Unfortunately, all I can say about that is this: Stop paying to see them, and Hollywood will stop making them.

Exhibit runs through August 8, 2015 William Reaves Fine Art 2143 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77098 William Reaves Fine Art will present Discovery!, an exhibition series offering intriguing new visual opportunities which may just pose the perfect antidote for the “dog days” of Houston’s summer. In a series of one-woman shows, Discovery! introduces Houstonians (or reintroduces them, as the case may be) to a cache of compelling work by three accomplished Texas women, all of whom channeled considerable energies and talents into the creation of innovative art, and warrant renewed attention and broader recognition within the state’s collector community. Discovery! shines long over-due light on the works of Constance Forsyth (1903-1987), Rita Blasser (1826-2014) and Karen Lastre. The exhibition celebrates these women and their work, and returns their material to the gallery scene after prolonged hiatuses, positioning the work for fresh examination. Making for some of the city’s most interesting summer viewing, Discovery!’s three-in-one format is certain to include works which will appeal to all, and qualifies as “required summer viewing” for all avid Texas art patrons. The film delves deeply into the experience of a family whose loved one, Elroy Chester, was executed by the State of Texas the summer of 2013.

Chester was diagnosed with a general learning disability by all scientific measures. In 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court barred the execution of mentally impaired persons, considering the punishment to be cruel and unusual. However, the State of Texas ruled that because Chester’s crimes demonstrated forethought, strategy, and criminal intent, execution was fair punishment.
