LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION* *unless it becomes politically incorrect, or if the US Flag offends, or if... It’s odd that a 60’s British band would take a song about revolution and hit the top spot in the charts, especially when American bands at the time were talking and singing about love, peace and drugs. In all fairness, that British band also had their share of songs along those themes as well. But, have we forgotten what our earlier ancestors in this country fought for and why?

The common factor was found in a common enemy and that enemy was going to attempt to crush the life out of a people sick and tired of being sick and tired.

We’ve been forced to put our children in government schools. We are forced to fund items that, if given the freedom to choose, we would not do so. Corporations approach our government with hands outstretched asking for that upper class sort of welfare, but if we are poor and need to eat, food stamps are the order of the day. Especially since it is illegal to feed or give money to a homeless person directly, at least that is the case in Houston. That’s the job, we are told, of the government.

You know the names by now if you paid attention in History classes in college; John Hancock, Paul Revere, Sam Adams, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and, of course George Washington. But those are just the few household names that we know because of their place in the halls of the American Revolution. Revolution that still holds true to this day. As Ronald Reagan famously said, ‘Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our

Our government, as of late, has become the task master to us all. We are forced to be two-income households just to be able to take care of the high tax burden, not to mention the lifestyles we choose. Want a high lifestyle? Well the government wants their cut.

Just before going to press, the government, through the US Supreme Court deemed it a crime to ban gay marriage. This is going to end up opening a whole can of worms our country is not prepared to handle. The correct ruling is to get government out of the marriage business altogether, gay or straight. Heck, get government out of as much of our personal lives as possible. That is why we started a revolution back in the 1700s. Are we starting to see what is happening here? Clive Bundy and the Federal Land Management fiasco was the tipping point for me. So, let’s learn to love our liberty and freedoms and fight hard against the government’s slow erosion of them. These are the things should never become memories. As Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s natural manure.”

Harris County Precinct 4’s Senior Adult Program invites the community to enjoy live musical entertainment during the 14th annual Opry in Humble Friday, Aug. 14 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Humble Civic Center, 8233 Will Clayton Parkway. Sponsored in part by Cigna HealthSpring, this annual fundraiser event features a variety of folk and country musicians including Michael Hix, a uniquely dynamic, high-energy entertainer performing pop and rock hits from the past throughout Nashville, Las Vegas and Texas. He has been compared to entertainers such as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Dean Martin, Johnny Carson, Steve Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. Opry tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under. Texas Bound One-Day Camp and More at Jones Park Texas Bound One-Day Camp Wednesday, July 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Redbud Hill Homestead comes to life during this fun-filled, one-day camp for kids ages seven to 12. Using props, games, and hands-on activities, day campers join together in “families” for a journey to Texas. Kids experience some of the hardships of settler life, barter for goods and services, and quickly discover what they must do to make a successful new homestead and earn a settler’s land grant. Reservations are required and may be made beginning Wednesday, June 24. Gardening Daze Wednesdays, July 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 from 8:30 a.m. to noon Join horticultural coordinator Teri MacArthur at 8:30 a.m. for plant identification and weeding in the native flower beds surrounding the Nature Center, or help tend vegetables in the heritage garden at the pioneer homestead beginning at 9:30 a.m. with volunteer Doug Ebeling. Closed-toed shoes, gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and water are recommended. T’ai Chi Wednesdays, July 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 at 8:30 a.m. Meet in the Outdoor Classroom next to the Nature Center for an hour of low-impact

stretching, breathing, and range of motion exercises based on the 24-step Yang form of T’ai Chi. Junior Canoe Training Thursday, July 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Budding canoeists ages 10 to 15 can gain experience and learn all of the basic skills needed during the Junior Canoe Training session. The training will allow junior canoeists to accompany an adult on park-sponsored canoe trips. Reservations are required for this event and may be made beginning Wednesday, June 24. Dragonfly Workshop Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to noon Become a Citizen Scientist at the park by learning the characteristics of and helping to monitor three types of beautiful beautiful migratory dragonflies that move through this region. A guided walk to the park’s waterways to practice photographing and identifying them will be offered. Second Saturday Settlers: Primitive Weapons and Hawk Throw Saturday, July 11 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All ages are welcome to watch as volunteers and staff demonstrate how to use black powder weaponry and tomahawks as well as

Invasives Beware Sunday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Record the locations of invasive plant and animal species and remove the ones that threaten native varieties with the JJP Eradicators at Jones Park. Participants ages 16 and older, or those accompanied by an adult, are welcome to attend.

Animal Tracks & Signs Saturday, July 25 at 10 a.m. Accompany a park naturalist to look for animal tracks, signs of wildlife, and other critter identifiers in the park habitat. 4th Saturday Settlers Volunteer Training: Basket Weaving Saturday, July 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers 16 years and older or those interested in volunteering are invited to learn how to expand their pioneer crafts and skills at this outdoor workshop in the homestead. Participants will visit the homestead to learn the current offering of basket-making. With leadership from Commissioner R. Jack Cagle, Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center is a Harris County Precinct 4 facility located at 20634 Kenswick Drive in Humble. All programs are free of charge and open to the public. THEATRE UNDER THE STARS REVEALS NEW WEBSITE HOUSTON – Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS), Houston’s acclaimed non-profit musical theatre company, is pleased to announce the launch of its new website. This launch is part of TUTS’ campaign to update and freshen the company’s brand, following the new logo reveal this past January. “We are very excited for the launch of our highly anticipated new website,” says TUTS’ President and CEO, John Breckenridge. “As our company continues to grow and distinguish itself as a leader in the arts industry, we felt it critical that our logo and website reflect this positive direction. It will greatly improve our patron’s online experience and deliver the information they want in a new, welcoming way.” The new website focuses on showing, not telling users about everything TUTS has to offer, whether that be Broadway musicals, fundraising initiatives or the robust education programs. The new look is brighter, warmer and allows the images to tell the story. Another important aspect of the new website is user-friendliness. The clean, easy-to-navigate tabs allow users to quickly find what they are looking for, while also being able to freely explore other areas of TUTS online. The unique search tool allows for further advanced searches that will deliver more accurate results. Users are also now able to effortlessly navigate the website across all platforms, including Tablets and smartphones. The

new website design allows users to come looking for something specific but learn more about TUTS in the process. The website development was in collaboration with Pentagram, who also designed TUTS’ new logo. As with the logo, Pentagram worked closely with TUTS’ Marketing and Graphic Design team to create a website that was easy for patrons to use, but also visually appealing to support TUTS’ modernized brand identity. TUTS’ new logo is more contemporary, and the site carries out those aesthetics across a wider canvas. “We’re very proud of how the new TUTS site turned out,” says Julie Savasky of Pentagram. “Our goal was to uncover all the varied facets of the greater TUTS organization so each could get the attention they deserve. We also wanted to make the TUTS online experience consistent with what visitors to the theatre see, hear, feel, etc. That meant using beautiful images of their productions in a big way, offering more video clips for review and lightening everything about the site up. We tried hard to declutter from top to bottom so the TUTS stars could shine.”

THIS WEEK & BEYOND FESTIVALS Tomball Independence Day Celebration Saturday July 4, 2015 North of Tomball 4-Corners on Business 249 Tomball takes Independence Day celebration to the streets on July 4th. The City of Tomball and presenting partner Allied Siding & Windows are taking the City’s annual Independence Day celebration back to the streets on July 4th. A portion of Business Highway 249 north of FM 2920 is again shutting down for a Texas sized July 4th street party complete with live music, activities for the kids, food and the City’s famous fireworks extravaganza at dark. Scheduled to perform from 5 PM to dusk are classic rock bands “The Bottle Rockers” and “Texas TNT”. Kid’s games and water activities will fill the festival site beginning at 5:00 p.m. Food and beverages will be provided by The Original Rib Tickler, Pecos Grill, Kona Ice and others throughout the evening. The giant fireworks show will fill the sky above Business Highway 249 beginning at dusk, with synchronized music available on Tomball’s own 95.1 FM – low power FM

radio. Gates open at 5 PM. Admission and parking are free. Coolers are welcome, but no alcohol or glass containers may be brought into the event site. The class meets every Thursday from 2:00pm - 4:30pm in the upstairs classroom at the Conroe Art League Gallery - 127 Simonton St. - Conroe, TX 77301. Painting in pastels is quick, easy, colorful, beautiful, very portable - and FUN! Handled correctly, pastels will last many lifetimes and their pure colors never fade, crack, or peel. No stress and no pressure here to paint a masterpiece. You’ll learn how to turn “happy accidents” into a part of your painting, or erase it - pastels are very forgiving. Everyone will hjave a chance to experiment with different techniques and materials, and you’ll develop your own unique style over time. For those who are new to art, you’ll learn the basics of drawing and painting. For more experienced artists who are new to pastels, you’ll learn the characteristics and techniques that are unique to pastels. At the end of each class, you’ll have a finished or nearly-finished painting to take home, ready for framing. Each student is encouraged to learn at their own pace. You are welcomed to do a class-based painting from reference photos provided by the instructor, or bring in your own reference materials to use. We may also paint from life, or go outdoors to paint as the weather permits. During this ongoing course, you will: -Improve your drawing skills, including proportions and perspective. -Learn how to see and paint values, types of underpaintings, both wet and dry. -Create different effects using hard vs. soft pastels. -Layer and blend pastels to get exactly the color you want. -Develop and use a portable pastel kit for outdoor painting and travel. -Know how to paint trees, clouds and water. -Learn how to paint and draw from life and en plein air (outdoors). There’s no pressure to develop a masterpiece or “do it right”. This class is all about having fun and discovering the artist in you. You’ll have lots of individual attention from the instructor with helpful feedback so your paintings keep getting better. The mural at Cuchara restaurant in Midtown by Cecilia Beaven is fun, it’s a cartoon. Easy to take in. Lots to see. It’s family in the center around a table and the city surrounding. Black lines on white canvas. Small narratives. Glimpses. A kiss in the rain, a bus load of people. Drop into their lives at a glance. It’s quick it’s easy. A perfect centerpiece for the restaurant. A perfect parallel. Here there are tables and at each table a different story. All the stories are happening independently, but right next to each other. The integrating factor is the food- great food, fresh food, Mexico City inspired. This is a family centered restaurant. Just like the mural. One sister painted the mural the other sister is the foodie. Mom sits at the counter. Very Friendly. Every one of your senses is taken into their trust- seeing, tasting, feeling, hearing-- The music is traditional. The

musicians will tell you that they are the Young and the Restless, but really the band is quite nameless, but please hire them! in a chorus they insist in their call to me. They will come to play for you, too! The octogenarian will tell you that he is single and he has a car so he can get married. They play like that all day. And the music is great, too! The old with the young at every table. Youthful fun engaging and taking everyone along. There’s a place for the young and the young at heart-- and the designers to dream. Pop art happened in the sixties. This is when cartoons became high art. Names like Tom Wesselman, James Rosenquist, Red Grooms, and Warhol took the cartoon form to serious places. Low art became high art bought up by art collectors, museums and finding a chapter

in art history. Enter Keith Haring and Basquiat. I must mention Manga and Street Art graffiti raging with fans. Cecilia Beaven brings the Aztec monster of Cipactili, the story of creation to the mix. This form of compressed narrative in line drawing does have its roots. All delight in line quality and depth in the narrative or the stark symbols and metaphors. But this artist, Cecilia Beaven, has given the simplified drawing an important context here. Narrative always has it’s context to make it meaningful-- Family. Territory. You feel the richness of culture with the lightness of being. The windows wrapped around the room to enchant space with the light and the resolved but not finished white paper papier mache. White Canvas and white light embrace the black lines in play, anchored by the blue green of a tree or two or three. The crowds of people surrounding the black pavements drawn and placed in perfect proportion and composition sings the spirit of Mexico City. With another mural anchored on the ceiling calling you to look up to a crowd painted there that will look down to celebrate you in the crowd below. Shout Salud! And my husband was told that they do have the best tequila in Mexico City right there. Cecilia Beaven created another mural at the border of Mexico and the United States.

This mural is about the emigration of those who went through the door from Mexico to the US to find a better life, those who were sent back after finding that path to America and those who died along the way. She tells me that she engages social problems through a personal lens. Her border is a door that is not available for everyone, she can go through that door to the US and Mexico comfortably and she has empathy for those who can not. In Mexico there is a contrast between the worlds of poor and rich, she travels between those worlds, easily, and recognizes her perspective and expresses her reality with the widest focus. The layers of her mural at the restaurant begin at the easy and friendly levelfun for people of all ages, joyful with colors and cartoons. There are other levels, if we look closely, Mexico City as a place to be trapped by chaos and endless density-- there is a bright and a dark side. The content of each of her paintings goes to the center of her and comes from the center of her. In the Tijuana mural thick lines that make bars and doors are the signifiers and the symbols. The simplified lines are long from simplifying issues that we all, as citizens of the USA or Mexico, must wrap our thinking around for a humane world. Each of her paintings embrace an idea, the clarity of lines becomes clarity of purpose-- be it the center of family and the land of Mexico City, with moments of lyricism and delights or the center that takes on the difficulties of social issues and what is painfully near, she doesn’t flinch. Her art is a circle. This restaurant sets up a standard for us all in great design: unity with constant variation. Art work all around in two dimensions and three on the shelves, on the wall and on the ceiling—inside and outside-- all vital. And levels of easy and then more difficult. All integrated and whole by the vision of an artist with clear sight. And as my husband said upon leaving the first time: this is a place that you want to take your guests. And he didn’t even have the tequila.

TESSERACT AND KSCOPE PARTNER WITH ENTERTAINMENT ONE MUSIC ALL NEW LP DUE THIS FALL UK progressive juggernauts TesseracT and their UK label home Kscope have partnered with eOne Music to release their all new LP this fall in North America. “We’re very excited to be working with the eOne team, their experience and well rounded ability will certainly help us grow in our biggest market,” says TesseracT frontman Dan Tompkins. “The band is really looking forward to making the most of utilizing the resources that eOne has to offer and can’t wait to start this album cycle.” The new effort will followup to the highly regarded Altered State LP that was released in 2013. The partnership aims to bring the band and their music to the band’s rabid fanbase here in the U.S.. “eOne are totally focused on this new record,” says Johnny Wilks, director of sales and marketing for Kscope. “Working closely with our Kscope team in London, they have created a truly exciting campaign.” The new album from the UK’s heavy progressive rock act will be the band’s third studio album and first for Kscope. Over the course of the last six years, TesseracT have been at the forefront of the everevolving metal scene. Originally formed as a studio project by guitarist Acle Kahney, TesseracT immediately eschewed all wellestablished notions of what metal should sound like and swiftly became a unique and daring entity. Acle had recruited a line-up worthy of his groundbreaking compositions and the band embarked upon a quest to inject some originality and excitement back into an often myopic and lazy British metal scene. The longstanding line up of drummer Jay Postones, guitarist James Monteith, bassist Amos Williams have recently welcomed back vocalist Dan Tompkins, whose first show back with the band was on the main stage at last year’s UK Sonisphere Festival. The debut album One received widespread critical acclaim, not least due to the album’s staggering six-part centerpiece “Concealing Fate,” which brilliantly showcased the band’s pioneering sonic approach and unstoppable

I remember the first day I stopped in at Donut-licious a few years ago; I walked into this quaint little place with a few bar stools against the window and a skinny counter top. In the center are some couches, chairs and a coffee table sitting in front of their two display cases. These wonderful cases were full of an array of different color donuts, along with your staples like glazed and chocolate. Below the shelves of donuts were all different types of kolaches, breakfast tacos, breakfast sandwiches even filled Nick Rama and donut holes. Instantly I could tell that this was not just your everyday run of the mill donut shop. I instantly turned into the proverbial kid in a candy store and wanted to

try everything. I settled on a dozen donuts and few kolaches. These beautifully decorated donuts and not your everyday flavors. The first one that caught my eye was a red velvet cake donut, topped with chocolate and a ring of cream cheese frosting, After that was a French vanilla white iced donut with chopped walnuts and a strawberry cheesecake donut. As my eyes wandered I even saw a donut that looks and was decorated like Hello Kitty! Since it was around Easter time, they had a donut that look liked a birds nest with green dyed coconut shreds and Cadbury mini eggs on top and donuts with a Peep in the middle. I am brought these home

and my son thought I was the greatest dad in the world. Candy for breakfast it is…lol! Then I saw what I wanted to try; is that bacon on a donut with maple icing? Why yes it was, and it was going home with me, because I love salty sweet stuff. On the left side a list of seven different fillings right by a tray of delicious donuts ready to be filled with whatever your heart desired. The kolaches came in three sizes with adorable name sizes (baby, mama and papa… basically small, med and large), which is pretty cool when you have young ones or are not too hungry. So when I got home with way too much food and unveiled the yummy goodies to the family they were all a hit and Donutlicious has become our Saturday and/or Sunday go to donut shop ever since. These donuts are fresh and delicious. Usually, when a baker tries to do “over the top” donuts they are so darn sweet you can’t even eat them. With Donutlicious they are perfection. Don’t worry if you want something over the top and extra sweet, because they have some of those, too. Donut-licious is family owned and operated by husband and wife Cam and Nimol along with strong support from their daughter, Joceyln. The family knows me my name; I guess you could compare me to Norm from Cheers, but with donuts instead of beer. I have watched this business grow and become so innovative with their creations that they are adding new selections to their menu all the time. They even take advice from their customers on new items like they did around Mardi Gras with a donut king cake and their now ever popular pan sausage kolaches (more on those later). I sat down and talked with the family to learn more about their incredible business, and here is what they had to say. How did your family get into the donut business? I always remember saying I’m not going to get continued on next page


into the family business when I grow up! Well, guess what? I was totally wrong! We have been in the donut business for 3 generations! It started with my Dad’s side of the family and it just spiraled from there. Donut-licious was opened in memory of my father. He was the man that taught me the ropes and everything I know about this sweet bread. My family has always had a crazed obsession with the go to comfort goodness called donuts! Donut-licious was created with the intent of giving traditional donuts a twist and making them a gourmet experience. What makes Donut-licious so successful? When you bite into our signature red velvet it’s just amazing! It’s literally a moist cake the size of a donut. You can have it with cream cheese topping or go all the way with double dip chocolate cover and cream cheese. I must say it’s addictive. Your signature donut is your red velvet cake donut. We have the regular staple items but we offer so much more! Those flavors include oreo, strawberry poptart, pistachio, bacon maple/ chocolate, caramel coffee, chocolate cover drizzle peanut butter and Reeses, and we always are brainstorming for the next new thing! Who is the mastermind behind creating

the over the top flavors and holiday themed donuts? It’s a family affair! Ideas are usually discussed during our sit down family dinners. We try to think outside the box and marry flavors together. Sometime it’s a flop and sometimes it’s clever. We love to eat out as a family and we find inspiration everywhere! I’m a cheesecake lover and thought it would be awesome on a donut. Holidays are so joyous and we love to decorate and so we love to dress our donuts up! It is pretty cool that you fill your donuts to order and Donut-licious has more filling flavors than most places. What filling flavors do you have and what are some popular combinations of the filled variety? We offer chocolate, Bavarian lemon, raspberry, strawberry, and cherry. The donuts are left unfilled and are filled fresh with your choice of filling. Bavarian and chocolate is definitely our most popular. Donut-licious is definitely more than just donuts. What else do you serve for breakfast? Boudin kolaches, ham or sausage kolaches, jalapeno kolaches, a variety of croissants, Boudin taco, a Donut Burger and a pan sausage kolache ….a Pan Sausage Kolache? what is that? Our pan sausage kolache could be easily described as the best breakfast sausage biscuit you will ever eat. It has a slice of breakfast sausage and cheese and optional jalapeno completely wrapped in our sweet kolache dough and baked to a golden brown. It’s a customer favorite! What is the donut burger? The donut burger is essentially a breakfast biscuit except we have replaced the biscuit with 2 glazed donuts. It has a surprisingly good savory flavor. Out of the entire menu what would you say is the most popular items? Everything is good but our Papa Kolaches and all the gourmet-flavored donuts never stay on our shelves long! Coffee and Donuts just go together. Tell us more about the coffee drinks that you serve. We offer hot community coffee and ice coffee. Café sua da is Vietnamese iced coffee and is blended using café du monde grind. We also have an imported canned ice coffee that is a must try too! Fewer calories and less sweet compared to other brands. Great to wash your sweets down. Donut-licious does something very clever for special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries and even birth announcements. What are they, and how long in advance do they need to be ordered? Our Happy Birthday Donuts are made from yeast raised dough and are individually hand cut into the shape of letters. Any custom message can be made for your special occasions. We require 24-hour advance notice. We do not take these orders on Sunday. It is best to speak directly to the baker so that he/she may perfectly understand your specifications and make the donuts exactly as you want them. Do you have any plans for expansion or another location?

Yes, we are optimistic, but we want to keep growing where we are now. We are so thankful to our loyal customers and the great friends we made along the way. We will keep y’all posted. THERE IS MORE TO THIS SOUND THAN KILTS AND BAGPIPES, ER, PIPES! by Mark Crampton mark.crampton@publicnewsonline.com The Red Hot Chili Pipers If you have been reading my past columns, you by now know that my taste in music is esoteric (to say the least.) My oldest daughter once complained to me, as she was pilfering through my CD stacks, “Dad, you CANNOT have Jimi Hendrix and Roy Rogers in the same music collection!” Well, I beg to differ, you certainly can, and I certainly do! One of my main recreations, now, is attending Renaissance Fairs and Celtic Music Festivals, and I truly love the pipes - bagpipes to you non-Celts. (If you pull up next to me

at a red light blaring Rap out of your open car windows, then be prepared to be blasted back with the sounds of bagpipes!) So a musical group which plays modern rock music on pipes is certainly a big hit with me! Such a group is The Red Hot Chili Pipers (RHCP), formed in Scotland in 2002 by piper Stuart Cassells. Cassells was THE first musician to EVER be awarded a music degree in Bagpipes from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama! (And, yes, this band’s name is Cassells’ deliberate play on the name of another well-known band.) Three other

members of the band also have music degrees from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, plus their drummer is a two-times world champion drum competitor! Cassells coined the term that describes RHCP’s type of music as “BagRock”, melding covers of modern rock music with traditional Scottish bagpipe tunes. Bagpipes, drums, guitars and keyboards are all featured in “BagRock”. RHCP got their first public notice when they won the BBC talent show ‘When Will I Be Famous?’ Their first major public appearance

was at the ‘T In The Park Concert’ in 2004, where they opened for The Darkness. In 2010 RHCP went on their first headline world tour, eight months that took them from Scotland to the US, Europe to China. Since then they have continued to tour, although mostly in Scotland and Germany. Not nearly enough dates in America, as far as I am concerned, and they have YET to visit Texas (although I keep sending emails asking them to do so!) RHCP members also appeared in the How To Train Your Dragon 2 movie soundtrack, playing all the Celtic instruments in the orchestra. RHCP has now released seven music Cds as a group, and three band members (Cassalls, Lorne MacDougal and Kyle Warren) have released solo albums, which are also featured on the RHCP web site. In September 2011, band founder Cassells was forced to leave the band due to nerve damage in his left hand – he could no longer play the pipes. Since then, Cassells has been focused on other projects, including directing and promotions, while undergoing various therapies. He hopes that someday he will be able to re-join RCHP. In the meantime, the roster of RCHP shifts as musicians come and go, bringing in different talents and instruments, but maintaining the core of Cassells’ “BagRock”. And Pratt’s level of sincerity shows audiences he can in fact be taken seriously, and this could perhaps pave the way for a new variety of work in his future.

FRAME BY FRAME

Now, with the I–rex, I found myself smiling and thrilled with relief. For one, the film’s best CG animation definitely went toward this creature, as its performance had to be the most convincing of all the featured dinosaurs. But mainly, I was pleased to see how similar the animal was to Crichton’s depiction of the Carnotaurus in his 1995 novel The Lost World. As a monstrous, carnivorous predator which hides among the jungle using chameleon-like abilities, the Carnotaurus was a dinosaur I wanted to see in a Jurassic film for the longest. And while the I–rex is an original creature features portions of Carnotaurus DNA, the animal was closer to a Crichton Carnotaurus in look and behavior than any of the other species used in the mixture. All in all, the I–rex is a fresh and thrilling addition to these films, giving the series new life and reason to stick around for the ride.

‘JURASSIC WORLD’:

The references to the original film are also a joy for fans. As characters stumble through the nature-ridden remains of Jurassic Park, viewers get that sense of kinship while knowing full well that they’re overall immersed in a different setting, experiencing a different crisis.

glen.ryan.tadych@publicnewsonline.com The obsessive craze that gives a film massive popularity is expected with certain titles, but can also come out of nowhere. Frankly, this is what happened with Jurassic World. In its opening weekend, Jurassic World treated sold-out audiences to a thrilling and exciting sci-fi adventure. All day and night, auditorium lines stretched beyond lobby doors, with box office lines reaching parking lots. I can’t even remember the last time I witnessed this type of commercial flood. Obviously films like Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011) and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Glen Ryan Tadych (2005) hit cinemas with such turnout, but the actual experience is simply something I cannot recall. In its current running of two weeks, Jurassic World smashed more than 20 box office records. Of these feats, its most notable are worldwide opening weekend and overseas opening weekend ($524.1 million and $315.6 million respectively, surpassing Deathly Hallows – Part 2), first film to gross more than $500 million in its opening weekend, summer opening weekend and North American alltime second weekend ($208.8 million and $106.7 million respectively, surpassing Avengers) and fastest to accrue $1 billion worldwide (14 days, surpassing Furious 7’s recent record of 17 days). What was it that drove people to such

enthusiastic lengths? What made them unable to get enough? Part of it can be contributed to the fact this is the world’s first Jurassic film since Jurassic Park III in 2001. This means the world bears an entire generation which had yet to experience dinosaurs on the big screen. Add this to the nostalgia factor associated with the original 1993 film, and you have a recipe for overwhelming success. All that’s left is whether the film itself is actually worth the anticipation, and let me say Jurassic World does more than satisfy a moviegoer’s appetite. As far as sci-fi adventure thrillers go, this is certainly a great movie that varieties of families and moviegoers can enjoy, all while sitting on the edge of their seats and leaving wanting more. Set in an open and fully operational dinosaur theme park, two decades after the Jurassic Park incident, park scientists engineer a fearsome, hybrid animal—Indominus rex—to attract new visitors and keep interest in Jurassic World peaking. But when the antagonistic creature escapes its paddock and begins killing any animal and person it sees, the park must be evacuated while an enthralling hunt for the creature ensues.

his role as geneticist Dr. Henry Wu from the original film, this time playing truer to his novel counterpart: a smart, talented man who, despite his concerns, delivers upon his employers’ requests.

I still feel the special effects artists haven’t stepped up their game regarding the dinosaurs since Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. The over-reliance on CGI had the potential to distract viewers from the rest of the story rather than drawing them into it. But the remaining elements of the film were all executed so well, the choice in effects actually didn’t distort the illusion, and that impressed me.

For someone who’s heavily critical of the series’ evolution, and a fan of Michael Crichton’s novels, I was unsure as to how this film would perform. Dear Jody, I have been in college for almost two years now, and I still don’t know what I want to do. My advisor keeps pushing me to declare a major, but I am so confused as to what to pick. I know I want nothing to do with math or foreign language, but other than that, so many of the available majors sound interesting. How did you decide what to major in and what you wanted to do as a career? Confused in College Dear Confused, I am laughing out loud as I write this reply (not at you, by the way). The irony is that I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, so I’m thinking I may never grow up, even if I live to be ninety! I feel like my career choices are pretty fluid, kind of go with Jody Reed the flow, but they are all related to helping others and the experiences I collect just build a more solid foundation for whatever I do. As for deciding a major, I had always been interested in psychology but during my senior year of high school became quite passionate about art. I decided to be an art major my first year of college before switching to psychology. I loved being an art major, but I decided that I could do art as a hobby and focus on psychology as a career. So in my case, trial and error worked for me. To help you narrow it down, start a list of what types of fields really interest you and in which classes you have excelled. If you are about two years into college, you have taken a variety of core classes. Use those experiences to see what would potentially best fit your personality. Also, there should be a career counselor on your campus that can give you a test to see what field may be best for you based on your answers. These tests can be very

helpful in matching personality and skill set to a narrowed field of occupations. Jody Dear Jody, I work in IT and am not really experienced with the female species, but a new girl started working in our department and I can’t stop thinking about her. I usually hang out with friends on the weekend, typically just playing video games and drinking an occasional beer, but all I want to do is ask her out. Here’s the problem, or should I say problems? I don’t know how to ask her out and if she’ll even say yes, and then I don’t know where I would take her if she does say yes. I’m guessing beer and video games aren’t all that romantic for a first date. What advice do you have for me? Not Quite Romeo Dear Future Romeo, Notice I changed your name? I am confident that there is someone out there for you, maybe even the new girl at work. Inaction will be not knowing. You don’t have to be experienced in dating to find your true love. Just be yourself...anything else would be false advertising. Why not invite her to go to lunch with you and see if there is mutual interest? Just a casual get-out-of-the-office thing that doesn’t have to be a romantic date. If lunch goes well and you feel like a connection has been established, then you might suggest to her that there’s a movie you’ve been wanting to see and ask her if she’d like to join you Friday night. After the movie, you could take her to grab a bite to eat so you can get to know her better. Take things slowly and see how the relationship develops. If it turns romantic, write me back and let me know. I can give you some romantic date ideas! ARTS Hazy Yet Vivid On View Through July 3, 2015 Fresh Arts 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston Fresh Arts presents “Hazy Yet Vivid”, an exhibition of new works from artist team Shane Allbritton and Peter Bernick-Allbritton that features freestanding wooden zoetrope sculptures, assemblages and collages. Using photographic techniques such as slit scanning and strip photography, which compress a sequence of images over time into a collection of strips composing a singular gesture, the artists reinterpret their immediate environment into elaborate visual distortions of memory retrieval. FotoFest presents I Am a Camera opening reception Thursday, July 9, 2015 6pm FotoFest 2000 Edwards Street Building C, Suite 2, Houston, TX 77007 FotoFest will present I Am a Camera, an exhibition featuring nine international artists exhibiting work focused on communities; specifically lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer (LGBTQ) and questioning communities. I Am A Camera is about representation, sexual orientation, gender identity expression and society. The members of the communities pictured self-identify across a broad spectrum of sexuality, gender roles, race, class, culture and politics. A varied and diverse population, it resists generalization and traditional, normative expectations. As such, LGBTQ communities have defined themselves on their own terms. I Am A Camera is an exhibition that also performs as a conduit for sexual orientation and gender identity expression. The artists in I Am A Camera explore a number of humanist themes, including relationships, self-realization and determination, class struggle, and community and space building. Their works encompass traditional black & white photography, contemporary staged photography, film, video and installation work. They represent a wide spectrum of sexual identification – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and queer-allied. The film delves deeply into the experience of a family whose loved one, Elroy Chester, was executed by the State of Texas the summer of 2013. Chester was diagnosed with a general learning disability by all scientific measures. In 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court barred the execution of mentally impaired persons, considering the punishment to be cruel and unusual. However, the State of Texas ruled that because Chester’s crimes demonstrated forethought, strategy, and criminal intent, execution was fair punishment.
