LETTER RIP

IN RESPECT TO DADS

THE LOVED, THE DESPISED, THE TARGETED; MY DAD CAN STILL WHOOP YOURS! Even though Father’s Day is next weekend, the Public News takes the time, like we did for Mothers Day a month ago, to wish our dads the best day ever. That guy pictured to the right of this column is my dad. I was the first born in my family, so in essence, I made him a father. All my siblings after that just confirmed that fact. As a newly made father, all the mistakes that a parent can make come at the expense of the first born. I should know, as I made a bunch on my own first born. But I learned a from my dad. I learned Ken Petty lot how to fish, how to bowl, how to throw, how to own up to mistakes. One of my dad’s passions was in teaching me about baseball, not so much about the way to play the game, but also the strategies. I think the rite of passage for a father is to take his son to a real live baseball game and let him see what double header is, what batting practice is, what seventh inning stretch time is. My dad was vocationally a salesman, who excelled to the ranks of sales manager. Every boy I knew thought his dad could beat up the other dad. I agreed that my dad could do the same and then sell them a car afterwards. I wish that I knew my dad better than I did, but things changed in the 1970s. Big things, seemingly important things yet stupid cultural shifts tore through the fabric that was the bed-

rock to family life. But the way life was lived was being challenged by those who thought they knew better than the very men whose purpose it was to lead their family. My dad, unfortunately, was a victim of that mentality and for the next five years I was in a fatherless home. No fault to my dad, of course. But I did lose out on knowing my dad the way most kids lose out on knowing their dad; like my kids also did twenty some odd years later. Sweeping changes in law, making dads a target for the divorce industry and the family court system, after all it’s assumed that dads are naturally rich. [Insert semi-controlled laughter] Feminism, which I am all for as long as it is consistent in its own values, has been the backing agent for this mentality. Dads are the target. Even in 1976, when my mom remarried, I learned about my stepdad and how on just the claims of his former spouse landed him in jail. No formal charges ever filed. It’s amazing of that power women hold over men ever since that mentality lie born in those times. With the economy sucking as horrible as it has been for the last 10 years or so, 92 million men and women are out of work. With that, child support payments are the breaking point for most men, especially when they can’t pay due to not having a job. More men are incarcerated for not being able to pay child support than those who just don’t want to pay, for whatever reason. Then the good dads who are trying to making it work are denied visitation by those moms who want that cash flow regardless of what happens. Children go without their dad, or listen to the lies of moms

who bought the feminist lie. Talk about the existence of debtor prisons, they exist. A whole court system exists just to convict men of not paying, or not being able to pay, child support (or in some cases spousal support). Being a dad in the 2010s is as much a potent crime as being one in the 1970s. Is there any wonder some men are gun shy when it comes to marriage? Fast forward to 2015; I’m older now and have gotten a chance to get to know my dad, even through the distance. Time is now our enemy as it stops for no one. I wish I could reverse the time just to spend more time gleaning the wisdom that pours from men like my dad.

So I will lift a glass in toast to my dad. Man, we both went through some real crap to become the men we are today. I just hope that my own son can get through this jungle somehow. But as a Petty, we are a resourceful and resilient kind of man. Happy Father’s Day Dad!

Local Triathlon Gives Athletes A Unique Reason2Race CYPRESS, Texas–Produced by the largest multi-sport event production company in Houston, Onurmark Productions, the Cypress Triathlon consisting of a sprint distance (550m swim, 13 mile bike and 3.1 mile run) is one of the premiere triathlons in the Houston region and state of Texas since 2010. Athletes come from all over the state to compete in the event to not just accomplish personal goals, but to make a difference for several local and international nonprofit organizations. Aaron Palaian, owner of Onurmark Productions, wanted to find a unique way to give back to the community through his 4 triathlons, several running events, and numerous camps and clinics throughout the year. He called upon his friend Gabrielle Baumeyer of Reason2Race to help him create the Onurmark Giving Challenge. The Onurmark Giving Challenge encourages athletes to include their family, friends, and community in their journey to complete their personal achievements. Athletes share about

Some of those charities include Freedom Place, Justin’s Triumph over GAN, United Against Human Trafficking, Star of Hope, Arthritis National Research Foundation, Discover Fitness Foundation, St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Cherish Our Children International and many more nonprofit organizations. Since this program’s inception in the spring of 2012, 40 athletes participating in the Cypress Triathlon have raised over $72,000. Across all Onurmark events, 231 athletes have participated in the program and raised over $352,000 for dozens of local and international causes. “The Onurmark Giving Challenge has been wonderful for Cherish Our Children International,” says Executive Director, Roxanne Young. “This program has helped us expand our reach and raise funds in a fun and creative way. The program’s matching donation element has made it possible for us to make a difference with the deserving kids of our Houston and international programs. We appreciate all Onurmark makes available for the nonprofit community.” On Sunday, July 26, 2015 in Cypress, TX, the charities and the athletes who are competing in their honor will be highlighted during the awards ceremony of the Cypress Triathlon starting at approximately 9:45am. Several athletes and representatives from each organization, Aaron Palaian, and Gabrielle Baumeyer will be available for interview before and after the awards ceremony at the Reason2Race tent.   For more information about how you participate the Onurmark Giving Challenge and to learn more about Onurmark Productions and Reason2Race, please click the links below (downloaded Public News version with Adobe Reader): • Onurmark Giving Challenge http://onurmark.net/giving-challenge/ • Onurmark Productions http://www.onurmark.net • Reason2Race http://www.reason2race.com

STARBUCKS JUST GOT THEIR WAKE-UP CALL COURTESY OF DENOVO COFFEE In a rather bold move, a new coffee place just opened diagonally across the high traffic intersection of Louetta and Kuykendahl from one of the biggest and busiest Starbucks in Harris County. Was this a suicidal business move or one of the best strategies for an up and coming business, taking on the coffee giant’s own Goliath in their own backyard? So far, coffee-goers agree, DeNovo Coffee has successfully thrown down the gauntlet and had enjoyed a very successful opening week. Managing Partners AJ Royal and Cody Walton are delightfully overwhelmed with the support they have received from the community. “We are very thankful that the community has embraced a couple of Oregon boys who are trying to bring something a bit different to Texas.” AJ Royal said. According to Walton, DeNovo Coffee’s team scouted out areas in which to put their first location. “Drive-thru coffee places are all over the west coast, from Washington state all the way down to California and Arizona. After some study, we found that there were none like DeNovo in Texas. So, our team of five guys decided to take a double drive through coffee house concept to Houston; building this thing from the ground up, the building, the menu, everything.” Walton explained the significance of the name DeNovo. “It means new day or fresh start. Our motto is ‘Every Day Is A New Day’,” Walton said.

Now that DeNovo has been up and running, what’s next? “Right now we are trying to establish increasing the traffic, now that they see us here, and grow on the buzz we’ve been receiving,” Walton shared, “DeNovo’s goal is top notch customer service. That’s why we don’t have an intercom system. We don’t want to just sit back, take the order and have them pull up. We want to have that conversation and see our customer’s faces. We want our customers to leave happier than when they came in.” Cody concluded. It appears, from all the positive chatter on the Foodie groups online and the continued lines of business, DeNovo Coffee is excelling toward their goal.

A SATURDAY MORNING THREE DEGREES OF SALSA AT THE TOMBALL FROM THE SALSA WORKS FARMERS MARKET DISCOVERY AT THE FARMER’S MARKET

Tomball - Tucked in between Main Street Crossing and a few of Tomball’s municipal buildings is a block of land that is transformed every Saturday morning at 9am into a Farmer’s Market for over 40 vendors selling everything from fresh produce, honey, handmade Indian foods, salts and spices to bird houses, laser cut wood art, chocolates and free-range eggs. The debut of the Tomball Farmer’s Market was June 2008 with just ten vendors. By August the market went from being open only on the 2nd Saturday of the month to the 2nd & 4th Saturdays of the month. After taking a poll of what their customers really wanted most (fresh produce), and after giving growers two years of farming experience, in 2011, they decided to open the market every week during the busiest produce season, from April through July and have now extended into a fall season as well. The Tomball Farmer’s Market became a year round, weekly market in 2012. You can get more information on the latest vendors at http://www.tomballfarmersmarket. org/

HEATHER OFFERING SAMPLES OF THE SALSA WORKS SALSA AT THE TOMBALL FARMERS MARKET

Last weekend a promised trip to the Tomball Farmer’s Market was made and my family made the most of the trip visiting nearly every booth available and tasting most of the goods offered. Of the outstanding products offered was three made by a company called The Salsa Works. We took the three variations of thei salsa home and tried them out on chips, sandwiches and with cheese. I had to ask Ken Salinas, the Cook-in-Chief, to tell the Public News readers more about their amazing salsas. The salsas that you produce; the original (medium/mild), the Guac ‘n Roll (green salsa) and the Nuclear (hot/hottest and my personal fave) have gone through four generations of hands. Have you altered them at all from the original recipes and, if so, how? We have stayed true to our time tested recipes for the most part, but have added a few things. Lime juice as a preservative. Balancing the lime to not overpower the flavor took some doing. We also added tomatillos to our red salsa to add a little tartness. During our third day of tasting I tried a few different uses for your salsa, for example, I put guac ‘n roll on a cold cut sandwich and yesterday I used the nuclear on a homemade thickburger. What are some of the other uses that you have tried or heard others use for your salsas? Red Salsa Huevos Rancheros: fry two eggs to your liking then pour our red salsa over them and turn off the burner and let the concoction bubble! Queso: add our salsa to your queso in lieu of or in addition to canned tomatoes. Adding some crumbled fried breakfast sausage to the mix will make the queso the envy of any

party Guacamole: add a tablespoon of salsa to your guacamole and kick the flavor up a notch! Breakfast tacos: the best use for our salsa in my humble opinion! Guac N Roll (GNR): Dip: use our GNR as a dip for veggies and chips Salad Dressing: replace your salad dressing to add a little spice your life! Also a welcome addition to pasta salad. Seafood: GNR is a delicious topper for all types of seafood. Particularly grilled shrimp and salmon! BBQ: amazing on grilled/smoked meats! Particularly on chicken and pork! Fajitas: use as a topper for beef and chicken fajitas Tacos: all manner of tacos, but we love the salsa on ground beef tacos! Enchiladas: as a topper for chicken enchiladas. What are some of the biggest compliments you have received on your salsas? People always compliment us on the freshness of our salsas. We make it weekly out of high quality produce so it will taste garden fresh. My grandma made salsa raw, never cooked, so my preference has always been that preparation technique! Also with this area having a large Hispanic population, authenticity is key to satisfying a discerning palate! Also, winning back to back (2013 & 2014) first place People’s Choice Awards at the Houston Hot Sauce Festival was a huge validation for us. Not sure that has happened before!! Our primary market is Houston and the surrounding area, so winning awards from our neighbors is HUGE for us! Chile Pepper Magazine, the go to publicacontinued on page 13

“HOW CAN YOU DEFEND CRIMINALS?” by Matt DeLuca matt@mattdelucalaw.com

This is something I’m often asked by new friends and acquaintances. I’m a criminal defense lawyer. I’m a constitutional lawyer. I represent citizens accused of crimes ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies. I’ve practiced all over Texas, but primarily practice in Houston and surrounding areas. After graduating from law school at the University of Houston, I dove headfirst into criminal defense, and, along Matt DeLuca the way, was fortunate enough to work with and learn from some of the best trial lawyers in the country – right here in Houston. The primary reason I defend those accused of crimes is that I’ve always rooted for the underdog. And, like it or not, those who have been accused of a crime by the police or government find themselves in the role of underdog almost immediately. Just look at public commentary when the local news runs a story about an arrest or an alleged crime. It seems there is rarely a presumption of innocence in the eye of the public.

time, I find myself in a situation where I must act as attorney and counselor. The client may be at a particularly low point in their life. Often the client feels anxious, scared, and completely in over their head. Part of my role is to help explain complex legal issues to a client who typically has little to no knowledge of the criminal justice system. Another part of my role is to help that client understand their constitutional rights, help to protect those rights, and help to make sure that the client is not taken advantage of by the government and its seemingly unlimited resources. I understand that law enforcement, prosecutors, and judges can be intimidating to someone who is unfamiliar with the criminal justice system. I do my best to level the playing field. To be clear, it is not my job to defy the laws of our state and country. As a member of this community, I appreciate the laws that keep our society safe and productive. I simply hold the government in check so that it does not abuse power or trample its citizens’ rights while seeking to uphold those laws. Our Founding Fathers believed that the role of the criminal defense attorney was so important that they wrote it into the United States Constitution. Check out the Sixth Amendment for that and other rights of the accused. They also set up the criminal justice system to favor the underdog because they rightfully anticipated that the government would have more power and better resources. Benjamin Franklin once wrote it was better that 100 guilty persons escape than for one innocent person to suffer. I firmly believe in that principle.

ARTS Hazy Yet Vivid On View Through July 3, 2015 Fresh Arts 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston Fresh Arts presents “Hazy Yet Vivid”, an exhibition of new works from artist team Shane Allbritton and Peter Bernick-Allbritton that features freestanding wooden zoetrope sculptures, assemblages and collages. Using photographic techniques such as slit scanning and strip photography, which compress a sequence of images over time into a collection of strips composing a singular gesture, the artists reinterpret their immediate environment into elaborate visual distortions of memory retrieval. The public is invited to an opening reception beginning at 6 p.m. on May 22 at Fresh Arts, 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston, TX, 77007. Free parking is available. Ultimate Justice July 17th - August 28, 2015 Fresh Arts, Winter Street Studios B11, 2101 Winter Street, Houston, TX 77007 Fresh Arts presents “Ultimate Justice” a multimedia exhibition by Houston-based artist Stephen Wilson. “Ultimate Justice” showcases a series of photographs, drawings, notes, documents and videos based on the artist’s experience working on the feature length documentary Killing Time. The film delves deeply into the experience of a family whose loved one, Elroy Chester, was executed by the State of Texas the summer of 2013. Chester was diagnosed with a general learning disability by all scientific measures. In 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court barred the execution of mentally impaired persons, considering the punishment to be cruel and unusual. However, the State of Texas ruled that because Chester’s crimes demonstrated forethought, strategy, and criminal intent, execution was fair punishment. The public is invited to a free opening reception beginning at 6 p.m., on Friday, July 17, 2015 at Fresh Arts, 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston, TX, 77007. Free parking is available. you believe. Even years after releasing their opinion and suing states like ours which pass them though they have no hard data to support their claims. Almost no one believes that the cause for Voter ID has anything to do with voter suppression. But that is the charge they unlawfully use the IRS to attack groups like “True the Vote”. Virtually every developed nation in the world uses national and voter ID’s except this one. The same people who whine that acquiring photo ID is “burdensome” and discriminatory apparently have no problem with the requirement of photo ID being presented for EVERY federal program eligibility existing. If this is honestly so obtrusive, the record enrollment on SNAPP, Medicaid, Medicare, SSI , and SSDI would seem to disprove that claim. The effort required to obtain it apparently is not that problematic to them. The elderly and rural residents represent the highest groups in these programs and their ability to provide photo ID refutes the claim that Voter ID discriminates against them as well as minorities. Poll taxes are abhorrent since voting is a right and should never incur additional expenses,

but Voter ID cards cost almost nothing and screening out those unwilling to be bothered to get one may actually be exactly the cure for malady in the Churchill observation above. Can we safely agree that the number of low information voters is harmful? Of the many “good bills” that were passed by our State Legislature but left to die in the Senate during the recently ended session (Texting while Driving comes to mind), the “On Line” and “Same Day”voter registration bills, written by Democrats, never had a chance. If we had Voter and National ID cards like everyone else, that may not have happened. This reminded me of the bond road vote. Stubbornly refusing to compromise on your sacred cow only hurts the whole package. The Montgomery County Commissioners understood the risk they took when they snubbed the residents’ desire to maintain quality of life over developers’ desire to increase profits by expanding the Woodlands Parkway to become another FM 1960. If anything, it was the result of a well informed voting block voting to protect their own interests and proof that this must be promoted and not diluted.

COOL BREAKS IN HOT TIMES: SUMMERTIME IN THE ART MUSEUM story and photos by Rosanne Friedman rosanne.friedman@publicnewsonline.com 14

JUNE 11 - 24, 2015

PUBLIC NEWS

Houston gets hot outside and to go inside and find a cool spot is a relief. My aim in going to an art museum is not to torture people, of any leg length. The goal is to be ready for the experience that will be not more than an hour. This is my advice for the kids of all ages at the Art Museum, any art museum, though we went to the Museum of Fine Art Houston:

comfortable shoes. Get ready for a wonderful transformative experience. It’s horrible to look at artwork and be distracted by the basics.

Go to the gift shop. Find some postcards of art that is currently on display either in the permanent collection or on temporary loan to the museum. Buy a few, you’ll naturally buy the ones of your attraction or interest be it Elvis, apples, or colors. We started with five and ended up Be well rested. Have a nosh, half a banana before entering, something light not a full meal. going to four of them. And the surprise is that The tummy taken care of is soothed not stuffed. there are many surprises along the way. Forget the coke or the coffee, you don’t want to be hyped up, but we break that rule all of the Go on a treasure hunt for the artwork that you chose just for yourself, those few artworks now time. First thing everyone goes to the bathroom. Wear comfortable clothes and especially belong to you in a special way. We asked the

lady at the information desk, where these pieces were and she directed us in a path to see them in the most efficient way. In each case we thought of these things: What’s the name of your artist? Where is he or she from? When did they live? Think about what else was going on in the world at the same time, Google it. Throughout time good economics makes an environment for art to thrive. Art during the time of the black plagues happened in monasteries with illuminated manuscripts, but outside- while half of Europe was dying in the streets—nobody was painting. Art is made about the bad times after they happened. In many works there is a social consciousness, be conscious of it. The self-portrait of Kupka, stares at us with intensity through time (painted in 1907) and language (he is of the Austria-Hungary Empire) and culture (living in Paris during the fin de siècle). The yellows are hot, the man is cool. Oh my, what a guy. You can see him seeing through you. I once visited with a film maker in New York. He was raised in North Dakota and in his elementary school his teacher taught all of art appreciation by one print of a painting. They looked at it all year. He recalled the first time he went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and found that painting and stood in front of it. He cried. He was deeply connected with this one work. In finding that work, in the original, he found

lots of things: he found a bit of his childhood, his love for his teacher and his love for art. Stand it front of the work, look at the postcard, look at the work. Note the colors, or walk around it if it’s a sculpture. Find the similarities, note the differences. Keep in mind that the reason Mr Barnes who collected his now famous collection in Philadelphia, The Barnes Collection- never allowed the art work that he owned to be transformed into photography on a postcard. It is because something always changes in the postcard, your job is to find it. Sometimes it is cropped to fit the frame, sometimes the colors are all off. Well, count on the colors to be off. Find the differences. When we stood in front of the Tiffany window that was lit from behind, there is such subtlety in the light colors that it would be nearly impossible to pick them up in a reproduction without a lot of trouble and expense, the postcard is meant to remind you of the experience, but when you see the postcard side by side with the original work you know a lot more than you did before. Louis Tiffany’s middle name was Comfort. This is art that you can slip into like a warm bath. We have the sizzle in Kupka and the sweet in Tiffany. On to the American wing for the meditation, again around the turn of the century, representational painting at it’s most sensitive in the flower, The Magnolia. The clarity of the Heade painting marks the luminosity of light, the crispness of edge. It is not asking us to look further, this artist has done the looking and it’s complete. We can relax and take it in like a meditation. There is something truer than true about it. The cool of our hour takes us back a century to Venice, to the Caneletto (1697-1768) the best of this kind, finding the right color for the light of the day and the water. The blues of sky and canal, the buildings and the busyness, it is an invitation to jump on a gondola and let the gondolier take you along, you can almost hear him singing his song. Thursday is free at the Museum of Fine Art Houston, The Menil Collection is free every day it is open—Wednesday through Sunday. Go see some art. Don’t overstay your visit, leave wanting to see more, and go back often.

Looking for more than a grocery store cake for your special occasion? I have found a product that tastes great and looks professional, from a cottage baker named Amy LaCaze, with her new business called Batter Up Custom Cakery. Amy had been making beautifully created cakes just for family and friends, but luckily for us she was convinced by those same friends to open up a business to sell her cakes. I had the pleasure to order one of her custom cakes for my son’s birthday last year and let me tell you this cake Nick Rama that was moist and delicious and his Scooby Doo Mystery Machine cake looked fantastic too. the cake and the all kids barely came up for air once they had their first bite. I have noticed when you order a cake from a grocery store or a commercial mega store, the cakes either look great and taste ok or it taste great and look just average. I can tell you from personal experience that Amy cake’s are deliciously tasty and look incredible. Every time Amy posts one of her latest creations on the Batter Up Custom Cakery Facebook page, I am truly amazed at her work. I am sure Amy can make a princess cake or Teenage Mutant Ninjas cake better then just

How did you come up with the name of your business? I took a poll on my personal Facebook page and Batter up Custom Cakery was my favorite. With both of my boys in baseball, it seemed fitting. Where did you learn to bake cake and decorate cakes? I’m pretty much self taught and with every cake I make, I learn something new. YouTube is a great source of information for the questions I have. What types of cakes do you do? I’ve done birthday cakes, baby shower cakes, graduation cakes and 1 wedding cake so far. I have a couple of more wedding cakes scheduled, so I’m excited to gain more experience with those. You originally started making cakes for friends and family, why did you decide to expand to a business? Yes, I started with just making birthday cakes for my 2 kids and then I had a few people ask me to make cakes for them as well. I never planned on starting my own business until my youngest child started Kindergarten in August continued on next page

2014 and I didn’t know what to do with all my free time. I wanted to go back to work, but it’s hard to find a job with the same hours as school, so that I was still able to be home with my kids when they got out of school. I had a couple of friends mention that I should start a cake business, so I did. I started it, thinking I would only have a few cakes a month. Word of mouth spreads fast! I never imagined that I would be booked for 2 - 3 months, in less than a year of starting my business. How long does it take you to do a custom cake on average? Custom cakes take a long time and that’s what some people don’t understand when they get a quote. On average, a custom cake takes 8 - 10 hours. That includes shopping for supplies, baking the cakes, making the icing, making the fondant, coloring the fondant, then decorating the cake. Tell me about the ingredients that you use and what makes you different from “grocery store” cakes?

Being able to customize your cake is the biggest difference from my cakes and “store bought” cakes. I’ve had clients submit drawings of what they envision their cake looking like and it’s my job to make that happen. A grocery store won’t do that. I custom tailor every cake to meet the client’s needs. I spend hours decorating each cake until I’m happy with it and trust me, I’m my biggest critic. Most store bought cakes have been sitting there for days and were decorated in less than 30 minutes. What are your most popular cake flavors and types of icing that you use?

Good ole chocolate and vanilla are my most requested flavors with butter cream icing. Can’t go wrong there! What is the hardest cake that you have had to do and how did it turn out? (also can we have a picture of it for our readers to see?) I’ve had a few difficult cakes but the one that sticks out the most was a custom Louis Vuitton purse cake. I hand painted the Louis Vuitton print on all 4 sides of the cake, with the little girls initials that the cake was made for. Also, the little girl’s name was Liberty, so the client requested a Statue of Liberty keychain attached to the purse. I was very pleased with the way it turned out and so was the client. I’ve had several people tell me that it looked like a real purse. What is the weirdest or most unusual cake you have had to do for someone? I haven’t had too many weird or unusual orders but I guess I would have to say the cake that looks like 2 tacos, is the most unusual. Where can someone see more pictures of previous cakes that you have done? If you go to www.batterupcustomcakery.com, that will direct you to my business Facebook page, where I post all my cake/cupcake pictures. How does someone contact you to see if you are able to do their custom cake design for them? You can send me a message through that Facebook page (www.batterupcustomcakery) or you can send me an email to batterupcc@ gmail.com. I have personally seen you grown into a very successful business, how long in advance should someone contact you for a custom cake order? Btw, I am placing my order for a cake for my son’s birthday in August now…lol Thanks for ordering in advance! :) I recommend at least a 2 month notice. I really don’t like telling potential clients that I’m booked but that usually happens if you need a cake sooner. I see you have some gluten free options that you do, tell us more about that and why you decided to put the gluten free options on your menu of cakes? Yes, I can make gluten free cakes ONLY if cross contamination isn’t an issue. I use the same mixing bowls and cake pans for all my cakes. So even though I do sanitize them, some people are really sensitive to gluten and need separate dishes and utensils. Unfortunately, I can’t make cakes for those who are highly sensitive to gluten. I’m gluten free and know it’s hard to find gluten free items, which is why I offer gluten free cakes. Do you see yourself ever opening a store front and what plans do you have for the future of Batter Up Custom Cakery? I never saw myself starting my own cake business so you never know! :) At this moment, I do not see myself opening a store. 5 words to describe Batter Up Custom Cakery? Custom, tasty, detailed, friendly, determined

‘JURASSIC WORLD’:

An Adventure 14 Years In The Making story by Glen Ryan Tadych

glen.ryan.tadych@publicnewsonline.com

Summer is here, which means it’s the season of blockbusters. Many exciting titles await moviegoers, the most anticipated possibly being Jurassic World. Debuting this weekend, Jurassic World is the first film in the Jurassic Park series to hit theaters since Jurassic Park III in 2001. Work on a fourth film originally began following Jurassic Park III’s release, but a decade-long period of development limbo soon consumed the project. And as if creative hurdles weren’t enough, the deaths of Michael Crichton—author of the novel that spawned the original 1993 film—and Stan Winston—special effects artist behind the series’ practical effects—in 2008 nearly sealed the fate of the franchise. But after months of teasers, trailGlen Ryan Tadych ers and an intricate viral marketing campaign, immense hype surrounds the return of moviegoers’ beloved sci-fi adventure franchise. Hype isn’t all it takes though. This isn’t the first time a film series has been revived after an extended period of time. Indiana Jones returned in 2008 after 19 years, Star Wars in 1999 after 16 years (and now again in December after a decade) and Mad Max in May after 30 years. These hiatuses typically result in an overwhelming amount of anticipation from fans, and can result in an amplified level of

20

either satisfaction or disappointment. Nostalgia plays a key role with fans, and the Jurassic series certainly carries a wide load of it. It’s undeniable viewers will compare Jurassic World to Jurassic Park. Jurassic World is a film with new characters, a new director, a new composer and 22 years of cinematic evolution behind it, so the feel of the film won’t be the same. It’s important to remember this going into the movie, otherwise the likelihood of automatically hating it will skyrocket. I will admit I have my own reservations regarding Jurassic World’s quality, as the original film is one of my favorite films of all time, and what we hold close to our heart often gets in the way of having an open mind. Judging by the trailers, I feel this new entry will be too flashy and become the monster movie Steven Spielberg avoided in the early 1990s. Of Jurassic Park’s 127-minute running time, dinosaurs only filled 15 minutes—roughly 12 percent of the film. I have a sneaking suspicion viewers will encounter dinosaurs more often during Jurassic World’s 124 minutes, which to me, contradicts the “less is more” style employed in Spielberg’s classic. One could argue this shift in style is what will make Jurassic World a fresh chapter, and while there’s some truth to this, the lurking suspense and subtle nature of Jurassic Park is what gave it its edge. A certain “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” method applies when it comes to thrillers like Jurassic Park. When you stray too far from

the flight path, you wind up lost, and that can cause a movie to fail. One of the reasons Jurassic Park performed so well and is now hailed as a classic is because it borrows from one of the greatest thrillers of all time: Jaws (1975). Jaws and Jurassic Park have many commonalities, the obvious of which are the films being Spielberg creature thrillers and a captivating John Williams score. The films bear character similarities—Quint and Muldoon, Hooper and Malcolm, Brody and Grant, Vaughan and Hammond—and feature similar opening (a dramatic and terrifying character death) and closing (the protagonists heading out into the horizon) sequences, but the biggest connection is the slow and suspenseful reveal of the films’ antagonistic creatures. While other films since 1975, such as Alien (1979), have put these elements to use, Juras-

sic Park is the film to pull it off step by step, but in a fresh and riveting way. You want to watch the film without thinking, “Well, I’ve seen this before.” Obviously, there’s no way to be sure until Jurassic World actually comes out, and while I hope the film offers a fresh take on Crichton’s fiction, I don’t see it being any less of a typical monster movie than Jurassic Park III. Jurassic World will either bring life back into the Jurassic series, or it will send it back into oblivion. Whatever my opinion, I don’t see the latter being the more likely as Jurassic is a popular, crowd-drawing franchise like Star Wars. For now though, go see Jurassic World and in two weeks, I’ll give the rundown on the film and we’ll see just what the future holds for the sci-fi world of genetically engineered dinosaurs.

international recognized and celebrated CLASSICAL music performers. Sulic and Hauser first met in their teens while attending classes in Croatia. Sulic went on to study in Vienna, Austria and London, England. Hauser conducted his advanced studies in Manchester and then also London, England. Of note, during his time in London, Hauser played two private recitals for Prince Charles. For the duration of their schooling and training years, Sulic and Hauser were rivals, opponents in music competitions. Between them, they have enough music awards and prizes to paper that Baroque music hall in the video Apparently though, the pair found that being two of the most recognized young classical musicians in the world, though proper and noble, was much less than financially rewarding! In an attempt to alleviate their financial straits, in January, 2011 Sulic and Hauser entered the pop music world by recording a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” specifically for YouTube. SYMPHONIC ROCK MEETS INTERPRETATIONS OF CLASSIC ROCK by Mark Crampton mark.crampton@publicnewsonline.com A while back I was searching YouTube for a music video, and stumbled across a kind of funny video that stuck in my mind. Two young musicians in 17th Century court dress were giving a cello concert in a Baroque music hall, the audience also in 17th Century clothing, powdered wigs and all! They began playing Vivaldi, then suddenly it turned into a ‘dueling cellos’ concert as they

segued into a cover of “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC! Fascinating, as a certain Vulcan might have remarked! When I had time, I searched out other videos and information about the musicians. It turns out that the two young musicians, Luka Sulic from Maribor, Slovenia and Stjepan Hauser from Pula, Croatia (both countries are part of the former Yugoslavia), are both

music video became an overnight sensation! 2Cellos had created a new style of music, dubbed “Ba-Rock”. By May 2011, 2Cellos had recorded and released their first album, self-titled 2Cellos. They diligently searched for rock and pop music that could be transcribed for their two cellos, and ended up covering songs by such diverse originals as Guns N’Roses, Kings of Leon, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Ricky Martin, Sting, U2, and, of course, Michael Jackson. 2Cellos next embarked on a world tour with Elton John in June 2011, culminating in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace on June 4, 2012. Early in 2013, 2Cellos’s second album, In2ition, was released. It does have some Classical music, but is primarily covers. However, the duets are with such dissimilar musicians as Elton John, Lang Lang, Naya Rivera, Sky Ferreira, Steve Vai, and Zucchero. A music video of 2Cellos, joined by Steve Vai on AC/DCs “Highway to Hell” was also released to YouTube at this album’s debut. In summer of 2013, 2Cellos again accompanied Elton John on another world tour, culminating in December with two days of soldout performances at Madison Square Garden in New York. The “Thunderstruck” video I saw was released in February 2014, and in March 2Cellos embarked on their first solo concert tour, to Japan. Their third album, Celloverse, was released early in 2015. It is, again, mostly covers, but as a bonus includes a DVD with seven videos. Some are concert recordings, some are YouTube videos. I ordered this album from Amazon myself, and am eagerly awaiting its delivery. 2Cellos also embarked on a solo world tour early this year, beginning in America, but had to postpone the rest of the American dates when Hauser was injured. They do plan to resume the European half of the tour in June. Sulic and Hauser say that although their albums are primarily rock and pop music, they do not intend to desert their classical roots. Of their five scheduled concerts in Europe this summer, two are Classical and three are rock. They say that their future plans are to tour with a combined classical and modern orchestra. Check out some of 2Cellos’s music videos on YouTube. Their music is good, and the videos are entertaining as well. Maybe, like me, you’ll find them good enough to order their albums. Although the two record covers of mainly rock songs, Šulić and Hauser say they still play with orchestras and will not abandon playing classical music. The cellists say they would someday like to go on tour with both a classical and a contemporary orchestra.

ASK JODY

HANDLING A PARTY TOO LARGE TO HANDLE AND HELPING A SISTER WITH AN EATING DISORDER by Jody Reed

jody.reed@publicnewsonline.com

Dear Jody, I’m sitting here with a major situation. I will be hosting an end of school party for a group of middle school children. There will be around 30 children at my house. I don’t feel my husband and I will be able to keep an eye on all the children. Should we ask other parents to help chaperone the party? This party is being held outdoors at night. Our place sits on several acres, therefore some of the children could slip off and get into trouble. Although we would like to think all of the children are good, we can’t be blind that something couldn’t happen. We Jody Reed would like your opinion on how to handle the party without problems. We want this to be a pleasant situation for everyone. Sincerely, Partying without Regret Dear Partying without Regret, You are wise to consider that issues could arise with a large group of middle school students. Even if you know the kids well, it is smart to put safety measures in place to reduce the risk and temptation of the kids getting into trouble. Since locking them into a corral with an electric fence is too absurd, you should recruit several of the parents of the kids coming to the party to help chaperone. The likelihood of poor choices should decrease with more adults around, especially when they’re the parents of the students. Also, be aware of any water bottles that kids

may bring in...it is possible that what they have in it may not be water. I’m raising a glass of sparkling grape juice to you and your partygoers! Jody Dear Jody, My seventeen year old sister moved in with me about two months ago after she had a big fight with our mom. I have not been on speaking terms with our mom for years, but I really care about my sister and want what’s best for her. I’m starting to think that she may have an eating disorder. The problem is that I’m only twenty and have no idea where to take her for help, and my insurance only covers me. What do I do? Worried that Little Sis is Wasting Away Dear Worried, Kudos to you for caring and being so observant of your sister! If your sister really does have an eating disorder, it will need to be diagnosed by a professional in order to get treatment. You may have to put aside your differences with your mom to at least get her insurance information, if your sister is covered by your mom’s insurance. I don’t know if you have mentioned your suspicions to your sister yet; but if you do, be prepared for some defensiveness or denial from her. It is not uncommon for people with an eating disorder to resist getting help. There are often underlying emotional issues involved with eating disorders. You may also want to speak with her school counselor about the issue, and he/she would be able to point you to some local resources for help. Hang in there and don’t ever give up hope! Jody
