I admit it, freely admit it. I am a vinyl junkie. I love records, probably more than I like CDs and definitely more than I like mp3s. It’s more than just the music, it’s about having an emotional bond to the art form that is contained in the record as well as its packaging. You don’t get much of that experience with CDs and none of it with mp3s (or any other kind of digital, non-tangible form of music.) I don’t pay for mp3s. Mp3s are a waste of money, in my opinion. Ken Petty If you are going to have mp3s, then rip them yourself. I rip them from my CDs and recently from the vinyl albums that I rip to digital. It’s a hobby of mine lately. And now comes a relatively new event brought to us by those who wish to resurrect the experience of record buying. Record Store Day is more than just embracing the digital format. It’s about embracing the cultural experience of going into a brick and mortar store and browsing through the record racks (that’s junkie slang for display bins), and talking to other junkies as well as our supplier, the local store owner... about music!

Most of the Public News’ younger readers probably have never had this experience. Going to Half Price Books, Hastings or even the local thrift shop does not measure to the stature what record cruising did back in the day. And that day really was not that long ago. Now I understand that the romantic side of the vinyl record is just that, romantic. It has no real upside. It’s not very portable, it’ll melt in your car under the Houston sun, and once you’ve scratched it, well, that’s a forever kind of mark on a volatile medium. Upsides? Well, maybe there is one upside, a huge upside, sound quality. Vinyl is a perfect transference of sound waves. It’s an analog performance, recording on analog equipment, being played back on analog equipment. Digital is too dry, too sterile and definitely abused when it comes to loudness. Digital recording takes away the listeners right to tweak the EQ (equilibrium settings), it also takes away the need of preamps, big speakers, ad nauseam. Vinyl demands your attention. It is a medium that you interact with. After all, most vinyl records need to be flipped over or changed every 20-25 minutes. Lovers of the vinyl medium love to show off their collection, and playback equipment. I guess the biggest plus is the Vinyl is showing its ability to retain its value. Vinyl can be sold and resold. Mp3s are a different sort of animal. Vinyl is King. Long live Record Store Day!

TUTS Underground Reveals 2015/16 Season: “Bonnie & Clyde,” “Striking 12,” “Sweet Potato Queens” and “Heathers The Musical”

(L-R) WWAC PRESIDENT CINDY HARDIN, TERRI SANDERS, HEATHER ORR, BECAUSE ART MATTERS CHAIRPERSON KIM LACAYO, BECAUSE MATTERS DIRECTOR KAYLEEN BARTON – AWARDS BREAKFAST ON SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 2014

TWO LOCAL TEACHERS HONORED AT THE 2015 WOODLANDS WATERWAY ARTS FESTIVAL The Woodlands, TX – Two teachers from Conroe Independent School District (CISD) and Montgomery Independent School District (MISD) were awarded the 2015 Dr. Gottlieb Outstanding Teacher in the Arts Award at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival (WWAF) on Sunday, April 12, 2015. Terri Sanders, of Hauke Alternative Academic High School, and Heather Orr, of Montgomery High School, were each presented with a $2,000 award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to arts education and to honor their personal sacrifices. The Dr. Gottlieb Outstanding Teacher in the Arts Awards were designed to honor two teachers in Visual Arts and Performing Arts whom have demonstrated excellence in their field, exceptional leadership, and a high level of dedication to students, by creating an environment that excites and stimulates the students toward self-expression through the arts. “The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council (WWAC) through its educational and community outreach arm, Because Art Matters, is pleased to honor such outstanding art educators in our community,” says Cindy Hardin, President of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council. “These teachers are truly inspirational as they transform students’ lives through the arts.” Terri Sanders is the 2015 Visual Arts winner and has taught in CISD for over 18 years. As an Art I-IV and cross curriculum teacher for at risk students, she has instilled a love of the arts in students whom have not had experience with art since early school years. Sanders goes above and beyond to create a bridge between community involvement and campus outreach by forming partnerships and finding avenues to share her student’s art. In 2014 she also participated in and met the requirements to become a Because Art Matter’s year-round Master Artist. As part of this new and emerging community outreach program, Sanders

and seven other Master Artists will work with community organizations and schools, to create community collaborative art projects and murals through WWAC and the Because Art Matters programs. Heather Orr is the 2015 Performing Arts Winner and has been a UIL Choir Sponsor for the past 20 years and teaches Choral at Montgomery High School. Known as a “one-ofa- kind” choir director, Orr uses her creativity and enthusiastic teaching to drive students to move forward with their talents while providing lessons of integrity, confidence, teamwork, and dedication towards a common goal. Highly involved in the community, Orr serves for several professional music organizations and fosters the arts through outreach performances. “A great teacher is a powerful force and catalyst for positive growth in the lives of our youth” said Kimberly Lacayo Because Art Matters chairperson, “The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council’s Dr. David Gottlieb Excellence Awards is one small way we can recognize the mentoring and guidance provided by these exceptional visual and performing arts educators who enhance the future of our communities by expanding the horizons of our children today. Heather and Terri, we are most grateful.” As WWAC celebrates 10-years in the community, Because Art Matters is happy to celebrate six of those years awarding teachers the honor of the Dr. Gottlieb Outstanding Teacher in the Arts Award. This year also marks the first year a teacher has won outside of Conroe Independent School District. As the programs of Because Art Matters continue to grow, so does the opportunity to become involved in all of the school districts in the Montgomery County and surrounding regions. Many public school teachers go the extra mile for their students and WWAC is proud to honor them for their outstanding achievements as they inspire their students to enjoy the arts in all its forms.

HOUSTON – Murderous bank-robbing lovers, holiday grump meets Little Match Girl, tiaras the size of Texas and the ultimate teenage popularity contest (hair scrunchies included) - TUTS Underground’s 2015/16 season delivers new theatrical productions never seen before in Houston! TUTS Underground, Theatre Under The Stars’ (TUTS) alternative and contemporary series, is thrilled to announce the new season running in Zilkha Hall at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. “I am excited to announce the innovative musicals that we have lined up for the third season of TUTS Underground- A Theatre Revolution,” says TUTS’ Artistic Director, Bruce Lumpkin. “This year, we continue to uphold and expand our original mission—to bring revolutionary, edgy, and affordable musicals to Houston. We want to enrich the local artistic community by continuing to produce relevant musical theatre, incubating new works and staging unique, pioneering shows which will set the scene for musical theatre of the future. I invite Houston to join the revolution.” Bonnie & Clyde October 1 - 4, 2015 At the height of the Great Depression, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went from two smalltown nobodies in West Texas to America’s most renowned folk heroes and the Texas law enforcement’s worst nightmares. Fearless, shameless, and alluring, the Tony-nominated Bonnie & Clydeis the electrifying story of love, adventure and crime that captured the attention of an entire country. The legendary Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll And Hyde, Civil War, Dracula), who wrote this thrilling musical, will be actively engaged during the rehearsal period of this TUTS Underground production. When Bonnie and Clyde meet, their mutual cravings for excitement and fame immediately set them on a mission to chase their dreams. Their bold and reckless behavior turns the young lovers’ thrilling adventure into a downward spiral, putting themselves and their loved ones in trouble with the law. Forced to stay on the run, the lovers resort to robbery and murder to survive. As the infamous duo’s fame grows bigger, their inevitable end draws nearer. Striking 12 December 17 - 20, 2015 On New Year’s Eve, an over-worked and under-inspired single guy who’s had enough of holiday cheer makes a resolution: to stay home and go to bed early. On another New Year’s Eve, a continent away—and more than a century earlier—Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Match Girl tries unsuccessfully to sell her matches in the snow. The two stories are brought together when a young woman selling special “full-spectrum holiday light bulbs” to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder shows up at the grumpy man’s door. Though the man (who probably could use the bulbs) seems to enjoy the young woman’s company, he sends her away. It’s not until he reads “The Little Match Girl” that he is finally pulled out of his funk. All of this unfolds through a tuneful pop/rock/ jazz score that retains the vibrant style of its original performers: the celebrated band, GrooveLily. Through simple, unpretentious theater created

through the voices and instruments of the performers, Striking 12 reminds us that “the world looks like new... on the first day of the year.” Striking 12 is a perfect alternative to standard holiday fare while still being family-friendly. Sweet Potato Queens March 17 - 20, 2016 Sweet Potato Queens (SPQ) is loosely based on the life-story of #1 New York Times best-selling author and SPQ founder, Jill Conner Browne, and the organization’s philosophy which was born out of her need for some excitement and a new direction. The Sweet Potato Queens ® is a women’s organization based in Jackson, Mississippi, that has 6,200 chapters in 37 countries. It involves a belief in a sisterhood that promotes self-esteem and positive thinking, appealing to mostly middle-aged middle-class women. Each local chapter assumes its own theme and designs its own costumes. Some chapters even participate in parades and fundraisers in their local community—the Saint Patrick’s Day parade being the biggest event. After its recent successful staged reading here at TUTS Underground, Sweet Potato Queens will be fully staged and produced for the world premiere next March. The musical is being developed in partnership with Grammy® award winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester (music), Oscar® nominee, multiple #1 songwriter and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Sharon Vaughn (lyrics) and Rupert Holmes (book). Holmes is the first person in theatrical history to solely win Tony® Awards for Best Book and Best Music and Lyrics, and Best Musical for The Mystery of Edwin Drood. For his play Say Goodnight, Gracie, he earned a 2004 National Broadway Theater Award and a Best Play Tony® nomination. He most recently was represented on Broadway by Curtains, winning several awards and 8 Tony® nominations. Heathers The Musical April 28 – May 1, 2016 Based on the classic 1989 film, Westerberg High is ruled by a shoulder-padded, scrunchiewearing junta: Heather, Heather and Heather... the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and sexy stranger J.D., who plans to put the Heathers in their place - six feet under. Relive your high school years, friends and foes, in this rollercoaster ride of a musical! “Heathers has sass, sex, songs and laughs! Lots of laughs!” Perez Hilton Brought to you by the award-winning creative team of Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, “Desperate Housewives”), Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde) and Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness, She’s the Man). TUTS Underground offers a contemporary musical theatre experience featuring local talent in Zilkha Hall at The Hobby Center, one of Houston’s most intimate performance venues located in the heart of downtown.

Everyone will hjave a chance to experiment with different techniques and materials, and you’ll develop your own unique style over time. For those who are new to art, you’ll learn the basics of drawing and painting. For more experienced artists who are new to pastels, you’ll learn the characteristics and

techniques that are unique to pastels. At the end of each class, you’ll have a finished or nearly-finished painting to take home, ready for framing. Each student is encouraged to learn at their own pace. You are welcomed to do a class-based painting from reference photos provided by the instructor, or bring in your own reference materials to use. We may also paint from life, or go outdoors to paint as the weather permits. During this ongoing course, you will: -Improve your drawing skills, including proportions and perspective. -Learn how to see and paint values, types of underpaintings, both wet and dry. -Create different effects using hard vs. soft pastels. -Layer and blend pastels to get exactly the color you want. -Develop and use a portable pastel kit for outdoor painting and travel. -Know how to paint trees, clouds and water. -Learn how to paint and draw from life and en plein air (outdoors). There’s no pressure to develop a masterpiece or “do it right”. This class is all about having fun and discovering the artist in you. You’ll have lots of individual attention from the instructor with helpful feedback so your paintings keep getting better. Your supply list has options to fit a budget, and everyone is welcomed to register and join us any time. TO THE REPUBLIC

Greece is the Word by Bart Pearston

“I solved my problems and I see the light” Grease is the word. Frankie Valli 1977 Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Ooops, wrong 1977 classic. Actually, in a country with less than half the population of the state of Texas, an economy less than 1/7th, and on “the other side of the pond”, the cradle of democracy began a slow. steady drift toward socialism. George Lucas would refer to it as “the dark side”and its largest employer became the government. Sixteen years ago, the European Union formed to boost collective economies of the socialistic member states by becoming completely intermeshed. Get to feel its effects Bart Pearston ready here soon. “Collectivism” would intertwine the 19 countries like the roots of the mighty Redwoods and theoretically make them able to withstand the storms of global trade. But just five years ago, the European Central Bank began “bailing out” the Hellenistic Union

because it was no longer to make the payments in its social safety net. When austerity measures were required for the loans, riots and protests began and the Syriza party of Alexis Tsipras was swept into office. This week, talks between the “creditors” (i.e. German and French bankers) unwilling to “loan” billions of Euros more in “open loans” (no repayment time frame) unless the promised expansion of government spending programs was broken and reduce the public sector employment levels. Think of it as a global economic game of “Chicken”. Frequently there are NO winners in that game. You may be asking why this matters to you in Texas, or the US. Let me see if I can spell it out. Just imagine if a state like Texas with over 25 Million borrowed 245 BILLION Euros (about $262 Billion US) with only 11 million people. Each man, woman, boy, and girl would now be the proud owners of a $250,000 mortgage (not including interest) with no house to show for it. Greece is now talking openly about “default”. Fellow EU members; Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Portugal are watching closely because they have a collective debts and economies ten times that of Greece. By abandoning its independent use of the

Drachma, Greece can’t just print money to pay its debts like the US can. If it defaults, it will almost certainly leave the EU and begin re-using it. Financial Times estimates almost 90 TRILLION dollars in International Monetary Funds, primarily from US banks, is invested in the European Central Bank currently(the same amount Al Gore wants to spend to eliminate cars). Greece can no longer imitate the Americans by “kicking the can down the road” (like I wrote last week) eternally. $2.4 Billion due in April pension payments, S203M to the IMF May 1st, $770 Million due May 12th, and $1.6 Billion more due in June have brought their ship to the proverbial waterfall. I wish I knew what happens if (or should I say when) they go over. For sure, Greek banks would close and panic would ensue. Laws have been passed restricting cash withdrawals already to prevent the economic collapse seen by the default in Cyprus 2 years ago.As Santayana told us, “Those who refuse to learn from History are doomed to repeat it.” Since the US replaced the German military 70 years ago, there is no risk that either Germany or France could resort to war to “collect” unpaid debts.Stay tuned. Next week: Obama’s mandatory voting proposal. .

Board Game Night Saturdays 5pm – 8pm Space Cadets Collection Collection 27326 Robinson Road #117 Oak Ridge North, TX 77385 Bring your favorite board or card game. Meet up with friends or make new ones while you are here! Please only bring all ages appropriate games. Monopoly anyone? We want everybody to be able to participate. Magic Modern Tournament Saturdays at 6pm Fat Ogre Games & Comics 525 Sawdust Rd, Spring TX, P: (281) 2928444 A fun tournament for Magic the Gathering players to test their competitive skill with access to older and more powerful cards. Players bring a Modern legal deck comprised of 60 cards, and compete for prizes and glory! Players may use any Magic the Gathering card printed after 8th edition, with a few specific exceptions. PUBLIC NOISE / COVER STORY

Every year, the most exciting thing we do is watch the list of RSVPs roll in from musicians and artists who check HELL YEAH to the question “Are you going to be at a record store on Record Store Day?” This year, over 600 artists—locally known, regionally beloved, nationally recognized and globally phenomenal—will help celebrate those stores we love so much. Surprise announcements came in just this week that our #RSD15 ambassador Dave Grohl will set up his foo fighters at record connection, and Amanda Palmer confirmed a Dresden Dolls reunion at Rough Trade. All time low, who have the #1 album in both the US and the UK this week are meeting the fans at Schoolkids, Morbid Angel does the same at Waterloo. Steve Earle, Jason Isbell, Damien Rice, Yellowcard, Gwar, Ex hex, TV on the radio, the list of artists heading to a record store on Saturday is wide-ranging and we really wish we could be everywhere at once. You can find a list of events, hi-jinks, performances and signings scheduled at the stores in Houston on the Record Store Day website. Best thing to do? Follow your local store(s) on their social media(s) or give them a shout, or head on in advance to find out what’s on the dance card. There are parties being planned Saturday. It’s gonna be awesome. THE LIST The list of titles being released only at record stores is only a click away, on the RSD website: A handy PDF that you can use as a shopping/wish list and a Pull Down menu with more detail and artwork. These are the pieces that will be released at real live record stores on April 18. Keep in mind that things change OFTEN in this business, and we’ll be making changes to the list when that happens. Fixes, tweaks, new descriptions, additions and cancellations as they happen. Life is a work in progress, there’s a poster out there with a kitten in an adorable but precarious situation that says so.

RECORD STORE DAY EXCLUSIVE RELEASES. Exclusively available on Record Store Day at Record Store Day participating stores. Will not be available anywhere else in the same format. *There is chatter in the world about other titles that may not be on the list. These may be things that have a 4/19 street date, but are not RSD releases, for whatever reason. Something you want not on this list, but you know for sure it’s coming out? If yes, are you going to buy it at an indie record store? If yes, awesome. *We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating. It’s always a good idea to be BFFs with your neighborhood record store and let them know what you might be looking for. They can’t guarantee you will walk out with what you want, but it’s a good place to start. All stores may not order all releases. All stores may not get everything they order. Record Store Day titles are limited for a number of reasons, and all in all, that’s a good thing. But please bear that in mind when you find something isn’t available. We’re all grown-ups, right?

ART TALK

THANKS FOR THE MEMORY! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR WOODLANDS WATERWAY ARTS FESTIVAL story and photos by Rosanne Friedman The Woodlands Waterway Art Show gets more professional each year. Of 200 artists it seems there is something for everyone. As I wander through the crowds and peruse the imaginings of the artists behind the works, I am struck with how choosing art is personal, even after I’ve worked in art, taught art and thought about art for decades. I recognize the skill, the concept, and the difficulty in making what is very difficult look easy, but the ones that I fall in love with are almost there for me alone. As I see folks with packages all around, they too, have made choices based on very personal connections with what they’ve seen and felt. The work that I’ve chosen to write about varies from elegance in engineering with David Frank’s swings, to mastery in refining an ancient tongue drum so it resounds with perfect pitch in notes, the functional potters that I return to year after year, the welder who frames and elevates rocks and finally a painter that makes every brush stoke bold with freshness and the spirit of the animal.

HARDWOOD MUSIC COMPANY

David Frank designs his swings to be ergonomically aware. They are easy to enter, the shade tent is readily adjustable, headrest and footrest thoughtfully available. When I sat down I was delighted with the comfort, then became more and more comfortable. One push with the balanced pendulum apparatus is engineered to move the swing for minutes at a time. This swing defines well designed, to sit in the swing is to sit in the moment that someone has wrapped all of their thinking around -just for this moment, I stand in appreciation. The tongue drum found in South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Oceania is a hollowed out shell of a tree that vibrates sound when struck with a mallet. The Theile father and son team, of Hardwood Music Company, have taken this concept and refined itmaking a box drum with pitch perfect notes when struck with various tipped mallets. Michael holds court as three person deep crowds gather to hear and

see him play these beautiful handcrafted wooden boxes. He claims no musical training, though it’s clear he has musical talent when he pulls people to his drumming like a magnet. I asked Miky of Cunningham Pottery what is not apparent about these clay forms? It’s easy to see they are imaginative, functional, thoughtfully crafted, elegantly finished. What is it that I can’t see? She said that each pot has been handled by both she and her husband, Steve, at some point in the making of the pot. The Cunninghams were due to celebrate their thirty-first anniversary the next day after the festival. They met when he was her painting instructor and both came to ceramics by way of being self -taught. She believes that keeps them thinking out of the box, so to speak, always open to new approaches and ideas. The vase, that is now in my personal collection, has one colored clay for the base and a slip (thinned clay) of another color painted on in a thick and fluid way, with a glossy glaze that changes into a matte finish and then an unglazed bottom. This was a piece of their new series, I’m sure they will be back next year with more surprises. When we were entering the festival we crossed paths with people who were leaving with some rocks framed with iron on a post to be set up in a garden. The proud new owner of this work said, “I just love rocks.” Cliff Matyszczyk is a welder that elevates rocks in such a way. People who love rocks stop to look at Cliff’s work. It seems he meditates on the rock and imagines the best way to show it off. Sometimes it is counterpointed with geometric form--the organic shape of the rock with a perfect circle of crafted iron. There are some that are meant for a wall- indoors or outdoors- and some, like the ones the people we passed by upon our arrival bought, headed for the garden. Carol Carmichael’s paintings are of the spirit of animals, directly stated barnyard animals, longhorn steer, chickens, roosters, cows. The canvas is efficiently designed, perfectly composed, beautifully painted. Every brush stroke counts. Rich, thick, buttery, oil paint used to echo, but not illustrate, feathers or CUNNINGHAM POTTERY the satin of the cow’s

hide. All the while the eye of the animal is exact and seems to return the gaze of those that gaze their way. There is an aliveness that goes through the form of the animal, through the excitement of the gesture in the paint and to the viewer. The fresh quality of application of paint is reminiscent of the brushwork of oriental painting, the unfussy backgrounds speak to modernism in western painting. The magical moments were many this weekend, rain was predicted and little fell. There is much to look forward to next year: the best of show of each media were invited back. The featured artist was chosen. There will be something here for everyone.

PIE!

NICK’S LOCAL EATS

IT’S WHAT’S FOR DESSERT story and photos by Nick Rama

I was sitting on the couch one night and I was craving my all time favorite pie from the Whistle Stop Tea Room in Tomball, TX, Unfortunately it was at 9pm and they had already closed for the day. So, I decided to rank my favorite pies from Houston and surrounding areas. What in my opinion makes a really good pie? The crust has to be nice and flakey, the ingredients have to be fresh and cannot have any of those pesky artificial sweeteners. Real butter, shortening and sugar are the only way to go. I have never been a big fan of pumpkin pie, so that is one pie you will not find on my list. I Nick Rama am still in search for a great blueberry pie in the area, but here are some of my favorites…. Nick’s Top 10 Favorite Pies: #1 Yum Yum Pie - Whistle Stop Tea Room in Tomball, TX This pie is layers of milk chocolate, cream cheese and whipped cream with chopped pecans and chocolate shavings. #2 Coconut Cream Pie - Patsy’s in Tomball, TX A rich thick layer of sweetened custard with fresh shredded coconut topped with a layer of whipped cream and toasted coconut.

#3 Galaktoboureko (Greek custard pie) - Euro Bakery and Cafe in Spring, TX Layers of phyllo filled with a creamy semolina pudding and soaked in a honey syrup. #4 Bayou Goo - House of Pies in Houston, TX A pecan crust with a layer of sweet cream cheese, then a layer of vanilla custard swirled with chocolate chunks and topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings #5 Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie - Goode Company Houston, TX ”It is a Texas pecan pie, which means it is bigger and gooier and richer than any other “real deal” out there. It is chock full of fresh Texas pecans harvested from the banks of the Brazos River—pecans that

we still crack by hand in the wee hours of the morning before nestling them into luscious layers of homemade Goodness.” #6 The Divide - Pie in The Sky in Conroe, TX Vanilla cream bottom w/ our Chocolate Silk pie on top- drizzled with white & dark chocolate! #7 Cherry Pie - Flying Saucer Pie Company in Houston, TX The most perfect balance of tart and sweetness. #8 Skillet Apple Pie - Humble City Café in Humble, TX -A sizzling piece of apple pie with brandy sauce topped with vanilla ice cream. #9 Key Lime Pie Houston’s Restaurant in Houston, TX #10 Lemon Meringue Pie - BBQ Inn, Houston, TX

THE SCREAMING ORPHANS

by Mark Crampton

The Screaming Orphans are four beautiful and talented young sisters: Joan, Angela, Grainne, and Marie Therese Diver. I first heard them at the North Texas Irish Festival in Dallas just a few weeks ago, and was totally captivated! Although I was working at a booth, I still managed to catch their show three times that weekend. And, I got to meet the girls and got several autographed CDs, as well! I could not believe I have missed hearing their wonderful music for so long! The Diver sisters hail from a generations-long musical family tradition in Donegal, Ireland. As a youth, their uncle Richie played the accordian and sang in the cafe attached to their family-operated motel. Later, their mother, Kathleen Diver, was the lead singer for (their uncle) Richard Fitzgerald’s Ceili Band, reknowned throughtout Ireland in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The girls formed “The Diver Sisters” band (with their mother, Kathleen as lead singer and their father as Manager) and toured Ireland, Scotland, England and Germany during the summers. A lot of their music from this time was covers of popular hits, but they also per-

formed traditional Celtic/Irish music. In the mid ‘90s, the sisters decided to break out on their own. The band’s new name, “The Screaming Orphans” comes from them leaving home and family, making them orphans on the road, and (jokingly) their propensity to hit high notes when singing! “The Screaming Orphans” big break came when Sinead O’Connor chose them to be her opening band and back-up singers on her 1997 world tour. Other world tours followed with Babba Maal, then with The Afro Celt Sound System. [I have an ACSS CD

somewhere – I need to dig it out and listen to it again!] In 1991 the sisters moved to New York City, and now split their time between there and Ireland, attending numerous Celtic Music Fests and Faires throughtout America and Europe. Since their first CD, released in 2001, “The Screaming Orphans” now have a total of 11 CDs. Six of their CDs are modern Irish Pop: Listen and Learn (2001); Screaming Orphans (2003); Circles (2005); East 12th Street (2009); Lonely Boy (2011); and Toy Theater (2013). Their other five CDs are more traditional Celtic/Irish folk and ballads, although with their own distinctive “Screaming Orphans” style: Back to Dublin (2005); Belle’s Isle (2009); The Jacket’s Green (2011); Sliabh Liag (2013); and Ballads Rule (2015). So, if you like Irish Pop music, or if you like Irish Folk music, “The Screaming Orphans” are worth listening to. And do not pass up a chance to see these talented musicians in person, the next time they play at an Irish or Celtic Music Fest near you!

A FOODIE PERSPECTIVE

PIE FIVE PIZZA COMPANY story and photos by Paul Van Deusen

If you asked me to name the one significant change the internet has had on society as a whole, I would argue that it has fueled our incessant need for instant gratification. Gone are the days when it took hours to go shopping or days to get mail across the country. So it should come as no surprise that quick-service concepts with business models similar to Subway are gaining in popularity. What’s great about these type restaurants is not only do you get your food within minutes, you also get to customize your meal by selecting only those ingredients you want. Such is the case with Pie Five Pizza Company, a quick-service pizza restaurant that is a knock off of Mod Pizza, a Paul Van Deusen Seattle-based chain that got its start back in 2008. Pie Five came along three years later in 2011 and has since grown to 30 locations in nine states, with a few hundred more planned franchise and company-

owned locations under contract. Normally when I dine out, I usually try to frequent independent restaurants (what we foodies refer to as “mom and pops”) or local/regional restaurant chains. But back in December of 2014, Pie Five posted to one of my local Facebook foodie groups and offered me and a guest free pizza at their newly constructed Kuykendahl location. Free food? During the holiday season when you’re trying to squeeze every last penny out of every last dollar in a futile attempt to stay within your gift-giving budget? I’m in! Upon arriving, guests may either order one of ten signature pies or create their own. All pizzas are individual sized (8”) and cost $6.99, with the exception of the cheese pizza ($5.49) and kid’s pizza ($3.69). After selecting your crust and sauce, you’re free to remove or add on as many extra ingredients as you wish, at no extra cost. Then you’re asked if the pizza was made to your liking before it’s placed in a conveyor style oven that bakes it in approximately three minutes. As you move through the line, you have the option of adding a salad or dessert to your order, before

arriving at the cashier where you pay and pick up your pizza straight out of the oven. On my first visit I tried the Athenian, a thin crust pizza with olive oil for sauce, and topped with mozzarella, grilled chicken, minced garlic, banana peppers, red onion, and Kalamata olives. After the pizza is baked, it’s also topped with torn basil, crumbled feta cheese, and a drizzle of sun-dried tomato purée. I loved the combination of Mediterranean flavors and the visual appeal of the Athenian, and it remains my favorite to this day. Their thin crust was crispy and almost cracker-like with no perceptible chew, and not much more flavorful than a communion wafer. If you’re picky about your pizza crust, you probably won’t like Pie Five. But if you go in with the attitude that the crust is merely a vehicle for all the deliciousness atop it (much like corn chips in an order of nachos), you’ll do just fine. My lovely wife ordered the Pesto Chicken Alfredo, another thin crust pizza with Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, grilled chicken, roasted tomatoes, and caramelized onions. After baking, this pizza is drizzled with basil pesto. Like my Athenian, this pizza was also a great combination of complementary flavors and easy on the eyes. Our 10 year-old son literally inhaled the leftovers later that evening. We also shared a side salad ($2.99) of romaine, tomatoes, red onions, black olives, and shredded carrot with house vinaigrette, served in an edible bowl made from pizza crust. The veggies were cold and fresh and the vinaigrette was okay and all in all it was a good little salad. Did I mention the salads are served in edible bowls made from pizza crust? If you’re having a salad as your lunch, then I think the edible pizza crust bowl is a fabulous idea. If you’re already having pizza for lunch, however, the last thing you probably want (or need) is more pizza crust, especially in light of the fact that their crust is somewhat bland to begin with. On my second visit, I went with their limited-time offering, the Thai-riffic Pie. It was a thin crust pizza with a sweet chili garlic sauce, mozzarella cheese, grilled chicken, red onions, and sliced red and green bell peppers. After baking, it’s further topped off with carrot sticks, crushed red pepper, and torn cilantro. When I got to my table, I realized my pizza was missing the cilantro, but a quick trip back to the counter earned me a quick fix and a heartfelt apology. Then I realized my pizza was also lacking crushed red pepper. No biggie, every table had a parmesan and red pepper shaker, and I gave my pie a light dusting of red pepper. After two bites into my pizza, I realized I was going to be longing for this one once it was gone. I love Asian foods, and this pizza was a tasty combination of Asian flavors and textures. But I found it to be lacking any real heat; the crushed red pepper was a poor choice as the spicy element on this pie. Luckily Pie Five has available several bottles of some offbrand sriracha sauce at their self-serve drink area, and a quick drizzle over my remaining slices gave my pizza the much needed oomph it lacked and amped up the Asian component tenfold. When they bring this limited time offering back, I think it would serve them well to make the sriracha drizzle a staple on this pie. I also ordered the Five Star, a pan crust pizza with Tuscan marinara, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, pork sausage,

Pie Five continued from page 19 pepperoni, beef, green olives, black olives, red onions, and red and green peppers. This one I didn’t care for very much. The pan crust is Pie Five’s thick crust, and twice as much bland crust doesn’t do anything to improve a pizza. I’d recommend you stick to the thin crust (also available in whole grain and, for an extra $2, gluten free). I’m also a firm believer in the mantra that “less is more,” something one of my instructor chefs at culinary school drilled into us daily. Given the small size of the pizzas, I feel that ten toppings is a little overboard. If I ordered this again, I’d probably take off the beef, green olives, and half the peppers (and get it on thin crust). For $9.99, you can bundle your meal, which is to say you can add a side salad or dessert and a 20-ounce drink to your pizza. I did just that on this visit so I could try one of their desserts, which are the same size as their pizzas and cut into wedge-shaped portions. (By the way, given that salads are $2.99 and desserts are $1.69, bundling a dessert with your $6.99 pizza is a terrible deal.) On both visits the choices were chocolate chip cookie, turtle brownie, and an ultimate brown-

ie. I chose the turtle brownie, topped off with mini chocolate chips, pecan chunks, and caramel. It looked a lot better than it tasted. It wasn’t necessarily bad per se, just a little on the dry side and no better than brownies made from a generic box of brownie mix from the bottom shelf at the grocery store. Service on all my visits has always been friendly and attentive. Every time I’ve eaten there, someone has always stopped by my table to ask how my pizza was. They also do a great job keeping the dining room clean and tidying tables soon after guests leave. For what it is, a place to get a quick, inexpensive, and fairly tasty pizza made exactly how you want it, Pie Five is a great option, especially for parents with kids who are picky eaters or don’t like sharing with their siblings. Because you can pretty much get a pizza to go in the time you’d spend in the drivethru elsewhere, it’s also a great choice for working people on short lunch breaks. And those seeking instant gratification. Pie Five Pizza Company, 21460 Kuykendahl, Bldg. 14A, Spring, TX 77379. Phone 281288-7435, Fax 281-288-9951. Hours: Monday – Sunday, 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
