LETTER RIP

EXAMINE ALL THINGS IF IT MAKES YOU GIGGLE, EXAMINE IT AGAIN There is a natural reaction to the absurd. It’s used in comedy quite a bit, but not to illicit a belly laugh. It’s used to illicit a giggle which is funny in and of itself. If you are listening and looking all around us there are things that, when you think about it, would make you giggle. A giggle is something that requires a little thinking before being triggered. Giggling is good. Laughter is good. But giggling, that understated master of the mute laugh, is telling. The Giggle, like a gag reflex, tells you that something is wrong, different, unusual, surreal, something that just won’t let you go. It’s hard to stop giggling. It’s almost as difficult as getting an ear worm to leave your head. Just so we are clear, what Ken Petty I am not talking about is giggle fits. Giggle fits are a different animal as it can be a sign that something emotionally is wrong with you. You can have unresolved anxiety, Tourette’s Syndrome, a need to gain social acceptance, or a need to draw attention to yourself. These four triggers can cause giggle fits. The giggling that I am pointing out is the one triggered by humor. Giggling caused by the discovery of humor found in the ordinary course of life. Monty Python, George Carlin, and Steven Wright used humor to draw out giggles more than out and out laughter. They drew out comparisons in life to illustrate the absurd. The absurd is all around us. If we are aware, we will find it and probably giggle. Think about toll roads. We have a lot of them here in Houston. The Grand Parkway and the Sam Houston Parkway are both toll roads. You must pay to drive on them. During rush hour, I avoid them. I

take the feeder roads. I can’t help but giggle when I see the lines of vehicles backed up at the tollbooth as I drive by on the feeder. I’m making better time than they are... for free! It makes me giggle to see governments trying to stop people from helping people who are less fortunate. I guess these good-doers make the government look bad since homelessness is still a problem. So the government is going to punish the good Samaritans rather than address the actual needs of the unfortunate. Giggles continue when I learn how Walmart pays folks minimum wage and designs it so the government, through entitlement programs, make up the difference so Walmart employees can make a decent living. That means that you and I pay for Walmart to underpay their staff through taxes that are redistributed to low income workers. Advance apologies to Walmart. They are an easy target since they are one of the nation’s largest employers who employ at minimum wages. I could have easily used McDonald’s. But we’ve all seen what has been happening there with workers threatening to walk out unless minimum wage is raised to $15. Here come the giggles. For me, giggles are a sign that my innermost being senses something is wrong somewhere. It’s a natural reflex to the absurd. Let’s use this to cause us to reexamine things. Using taxes to pay for toll roads is stupid. It should be illegal, but it isn’t. Using taxpayer money to build sports arenas for billionaires is funny. It’s giggle mad funny. Thinking that raising the minimum wage is going to help people is giggle funny. Giggling is good. It’s good for the heart. It’s good for the soul. Mainly, giggling, taken out of the context of a comedic routine, should be cause to reexamine the very thing that made you giggle in the first place. This marks the eighth consecutive year that Camden has been included on FORTUNE’s list. ALLEY THEATRE RESIDENT COMPANY FEATURED IN ARTHUR MILLER’S RIVETING AMERICAN DRAMA ALL MY SONS

All My Sons, Directed by Theresa Rebeck, runs March 27 through April 19, 2013 as part of the “Alley Theatre @ UH” season Alley Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Boyd announces the cast and creative team for Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. Playwright Theresa Rebeck directs the Alley Theatre Resident Company in this riveting American drama. Arthur Miller’s 1947 classic is about social responsibility set against personal gain, as the play pivots on the secrecy held within in a postwar American family. Joe Keller, a success in business and a solid family man, once

supplied faulty parts to the US military. Men died as a consequence and Keller’s business partner has been jailed. The Kellers’ youngest son went missing in action, and, as the truth comes home, there are consequences for all. The plot resonates with uncanny timeliness and unfolds with the excitement of a thriller. Miller earned his reputation with this, his first major success, and an American masterwork. The Alley’s association with Miller dates back to 1954, when Alley founder Nina Vance

directed Miller’s masterpiece Death of a Salesman. The Alley has made 12 productions of Miller’s plays: Death of a Salesman in 1997 and 2012; All My Sons in 1955 and1984; A View from the Bridge (1957, 1989 and 1999); and 3 productions of The Crucible. In 2005, Arthur Miller passed away days after the Alley closed After the Fall and was in rehearsal for The Crucible. Both plays were programmed as a tribute to Arthur Miller, who would have celebrated his 90th birthday on October 17, 2005. In 1984, Miller visited the Alley to receive the inaugural Alley Award, created by the Alley Board of Directors to recognize significant contributions to the theatrical arts. The celebration coincided with the Alley’s 1984 production of All My Sons and also included excerpts from Miller’s plays performed by many renowned actors, including Robert Duvall, Frank Langella, and Colleen Dewhurst, who was mistress of ceremonies. Theresa Rebeck is a widely produced playwright throughout the United States and abroad. She is a Pulitzer Prize nominee and the Alley Theatre has produced five of her plays including the world premiere of Fool in 2014, What We’re Up Against in 2012, Mauritius in 2009, The Scene in 2007 and Bad Dates in 2005. New York productions of her work include Poor Behavior with Primary Stages; Dead Accounts at the Music Box Theatre; Seminar at the Golden Theatre; Mauritius at the Biltmore Theatre in a Manhattan Theater Club Production; The Scene, The Water’s Edge, Loose Knit, The Family of Mann and Spike Heels at Second Stage; Bad Dates, The Butterfly Collection and Our

House at Playwrights Horizons; The Understudy at the Laura Pels Theater in a Roundabout Theatre Company production; and View of the Dome at New York Theatre Workshop. Omnium Gatherum (co-written, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2003) was featured at the Humana Festival, and had a commercial run at the Variety Arts Theatre. The world premiere of her newest work Zealot opened at South Coast Repertory as part of the 2014 Pacific Playwrights Festival. Poor Behavior premiered at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles in 2011. Dead Accounts, commissioned by the Cincinnati Playhouse, premiered January 2012. She is the creator of the NBC drama, Smash. In addition to directing All My Sons as part of the “Alley Theatre @ UH” season, Theresa Rebeck is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Playwriting at the University of Houston. Rebeck is teaching Playwriting III, a course crafted for third-year undergraduates. She also will guide senior Bachelor of Fine Arts Playwriting/Dramaturgy students as they develop their capstone projects to complete their degrees. Under her watchful eye, students will write and shape a full-length play during their junior year and another during their senior year. The cast of All My Sons features Jeffrey Bean as Dr. Jim Bayliss, James Black as Joe Keller, Elizabeth Bunch as Ann Deever, Winch Eagleton as Bert, Chris Hutchison as George Deever, Josie de Guzman as Kate Keller, Chelsea Ryan McCurdy as Lydia

The class meets every Thursday from 2:00pm - 4:30pm in the upstairs classroom at the Conroe Art League Gallery - 127 Simonton St. - Conroe, TX 77301. Painting in pastels is quick, easy, colorful, beautiful, very portable - and FUN! Handled correctly, pastels will last many lifetimes and their pure colors never fade, crack, or peel. No stress and no pressure here to paint a masterpiece. You’ll learn how to turn “happy accidents” into a part of your painting, or erase it - pastels are very forgiving. Everyone will hjave a chance to experiment with different techniques and materials, and you’ll develop your own unique style over time. For those who are new to art, you’ll learn the basics of drawing and painting. For more experienced artists who are new to pastels, you’ll learn the characteristics and techniques that are unique to pastels. At the end of each class, you’ll have a finished or nearly-finished painting to take home,

ready for framing. Each student is encouraged to learn at their own pace. You are welcomed to do a class-based painting from reference photos provided by the instructor, or bring in your own reference materials to use. We may also paint from life, or go outdoors to paint as the weather permits. During this ongoing course, you will: -Improve your drawing skills, including proportions and perspective. -Learn how to see and paint values, types of underpaintings, both wet and dry. -Create different effects using hard vs. soft pastels. -Layer and blend pastels to get exactly the color you want. -Develop and use a portable pastel kit for outdoor painting and travel. -Know how to paint trees, clouds and water. -Learn how to paint and draw from life and en plein air (outdoors). There’s no pressure to develop a masterpiece or “do it right”. This class is all about having fun and discovering the artist in you. You’ll have lots of individual attention from the instructor with helpful feedback so your paintings keep getting better. Your supply list has options to fit a budget, and everyone is welcomed to register and join us any time. Please contact the instructor, Kathy Fediw, at Kathy@jfaconsultingbiz.com or call her business number at 281-687-6966, if you have any questions and for a list of materials. Cost: $30.00 per class, payable at the first of each month or at the beginning of each session.

COVER STORY/ART TALK

The Way of Coffee and Drinking in Art on a Rainy Day by Rosanne Friedman

If you have had an art friend that challenged you: “I want to see the art in this city, and take it in as a whole! Show me your city.” It’s much like the one who asked Rabbi Hillel: Tell me the whole Torah while standing on one foot. And Hillel responded, “Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you. All the rest is commentary, Go and Study.” Art is rich and comes from many levels of being human, on our path on this rainy day, this is our study: Starting at Tout Suite (2001 Commerce Street) we make a plan and a path. This coffee shop and bakery is in a revitalized building in an old warehouse section of Houston, where new high rises and artist spaces are developing. The Hand Weavers Guild has a spot just up the street. We sipped a flat white and speak with the barista manager who participates in Iron Chef-type competitions for coffee some of which take him out of the country. This place is full of that same vitality and energy everywhere you look; great coffee, great Bakery, great Atmosphere. We followed Signs to Discovery Green (1500 McKinney) on the other side of the freeway, a place of permanent public art and installations, among them is one of my all time favorites, Jean Dubuffet’s sculpture, “Monument au Fantome”, that was restored and moved here from downtown. We made our way over to Caroline Street and headed to Weights and Measures (2808 Caroline) in time for lunch. The Slo Dough Bakery is a centerpiece of this old revitalized fan factory and designed to be a throwback to the ‘80’s. I talked

with that barista who credited the low temperature pasteurization process of the milk for the rich flavor of the flat white. Across the street at 1302 Dennis is an installation piece of artwork by Molly Gochman, “The Red Sand Project” for the awareness of Human Trafficking and modern-day slavery. A two foot wide and almost 300’ long trench was carved out of this grassy land area . The shape of the trench mirrors the shape of the border between the United States and Mexico. Down Caroline and around to Alabama takes us to the Station Museum of Contemporary Art (1502 Alabama) that currently houses one of the four venues of Rematch, the Mel Chin retrospective in Houston. The works currently on display are conceptual pieces engaged to elevate awareness of the immense challenges we face in order to call ourselves human beings. Continuing on Alabama crossing the Eastex Freeway a short distance away are the Project Row Houses (2521 Holman) the brain child of founder Rick Lowe winner of the MacArthur Award, creating a community based art and culture non-profit organization in one of the city’s oldest African American neighborhoods. The programs here give space to public art, provide a nurturing environment for the creative risk taking of making art. There is an art education component that provides quality art instruction by professional artists, and a Young Mothers programan intensive two year programproviding services and support for women and their children. The upcoming exhibit: Round 42 curated by Sally Frater, called “The One and the Many: A Kelly O’Briant “One Day, Late in the Afternoon” Self-portrait

Molly Gochman, “The Red Sand Project” in Seven Parts” presenting photography, video, textile, textbased and sculptural installation. The opening is Saturday March 28th 4-7 with artist talk 2:30-4. The public is invited to come. At the corner of Dowling is the Doshi Coffeehouse, offering vegan selections with coffees and teas. Back on Alabama and then left on Main brings us to The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (4848 Main Street) currently featuring Kelly O’Briant , “One Day, Late in the Afternoon”. This exhibit comes from a more personal place than the artwork we’ve looked at along this path. It is a reverie, subtle in the relationship between calm and disquieting; the kind of work that challenges the boundary between art and craft. HCCC offers studio space for artists, who then open their spaces to discuss their processes in work. “Hands On Houston”, the first Saturday of the month invites families to participate in 15-20 minute activities by the studio craftspeople. The HCCC hosts the Empty Bowl Project every year. Empty Bowls benefit the Harris County Hunger Project. Right Now there is a Call for artists and craftspeople to donate bowls. Soup, bread and drinks are donated and the public is invited to choose a bowl to keep and have lunch, for a modest donation to this good cause. This year Empty Bowls will happen Saturday May 16th from 11AM-3PM. Lawndale, (4912 Main Street) right next door, is another

Continuing on Main Street is the Treasure House of art in Houston in the Museum of Fine Art Houston, already the fifth largest in America and with money in their pocket they are getting ready for a big expansion with the master plan: two new buildings, designed by Steven Holl Architects; a new conservation center, designed by Lake Flato Architects and a landscape plan that unifies a century’s worth of signature architectural structures. The former director Peter Marzio wanted the collection to reflect the population of Houston, the current director speaks of growing the collection, so that the world is enveloped here. Previously published articles the Museum of Fine Art Houston in Public News include: Korean Moon Jars, Mr. Turner, and Japanese Screens. SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY, WELL DONE by Paul Van Deusen

If you’re anything like me, I’ll bet you have a restaurant or two in your regular rotation that’s not necessarily the best of its kind in whatever cuisine it specializes in. Maybe it’s the staff that keeps you coming back, or maybe it’s the service. Perhaps it’s really close to home or work, or perhaps there’s always a coupon in the mail or paper that makes it a fiscal no-brainer. Whatever your reason, sometimes it’s hard to casually dismiss a restaurant like that, a place where everyone knows your name and you’re treated like family. A place that would let you return the next day to settle your tab if you forgot your wallet at home. A place that doesn’t have bad food, just food that’s not quite as good as its competitors. Such is the case with Southern Q, a family-owned former food truck turned restaurant, located on Kuykendahl about Paul Van Deusen midway between Cypresswood and FM 1960 (as a lifelong Houstonian, I just can’t bring myself to call the latter Cypress Creek Parkway). After one take-out and two dine-in visits, I found their food to be just so-so when compared to my favorite non-chain barbecue joints, Corkscrew BBQ and BBQ Godfather, both located right outside The Woodlands. The restaurant is owned by husband and wife Steve and Sherice Garner, he a former truck driver and she a former school teacher. Both left their jobs in 2010 to start a barbecue food truck and catering business because of the popularity of the weekend barbecues they did for their church. They recently parked their food truck and bought and renovated a local former barbecue restaurant, launching their first permanent

PUBLIC NEWS

location on February 13, 2015. (In a recent conversation, Steve also revealed plans to begin selling barbecue from the food truck again at the intersection of Cypresswood and Aldine Westfield in the near future.) After five years in the business (and obviously successful ones at that), I’m at a loss to explain how my food wasn’t as good as what I’ve read about and seen in other reviews and blogs on Southern Q. It could be a case of growing pains; I know they’ve taken on some new staff in their expansion and that Steve is also cooking on a different pit that was included with the restaurant. Or it could be a case of meats being cut beforehand and not to order (thus drying them out), and side dishes being held at too high a temperature or saved, reheated, and still served to guests despite the obvious decline in quality. Whatever the issues may be, I do hope they’re resolved soon, because I have to admit, I really liked this place despite the missteps with some of the food. It’s the kind of place I would eat at regularly and recommend frequently if the food was more consistent. The restaurant itself is long and rectangular, about the size of a double-wide mobile home, and painted fire engine red. The menu is posted on a large chalkboard behind the front counter to your left as you walk in. After placing your order, a small dining room with red and white checkered cloth tables awaits behind you, with Texas themed memorabilia and handpainted murals adorning the walls. The space exudes a family atmosphere and southern charm, due in part to the décor and, in larger part, to the people who work there. Steve and his wife are two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, as are the two ladies who were working the front counter on my first visit. (I read elsewhere that Steve’s mother, Cathy,

is one of those ladies and that she also makes the restaurant’s desserts). The service on all my visits was the friendliest and most hospitable I’ve had anywhere in a very long time. On my first visit, I had a 2-meat plate ($13.95) with pork spareribs and brisket, half lean and half moist. My sides were potato salad and beans. The plate was served with pickles and onions, two slices of white bread, a chocolate peppermint candy, and a moist towelette (nice touch). Barbecue sauce was served on the side in a squeeze bottle that was brought to the table with the food. Unfortunately my barbecue was a bit dry and overcooked. The ribs were slightly sweet and had a gorgeous mahogany red bark, but the meat pulled away from the bone a tad too easily. The brisket’s blackened bark was a touch salty and the meat had a faint 1/8” smoke ring. I ate 2/3 of my brisket sans sauce and could barely taste any trace of the red oak and hickory used to smoke the meat. I tried the barbecue sauce with my remaining brisket. It was on the sweet side, slightly spicy and not too tart, with chile powder and cumin at the forefront, a true testament to East Texas-style barbecue. I liked it well enough, but at the same time wished the chile and cumin flavors were just a little less dominant. As far as the sides were concerned, the potato salad was a good mustard-based version with sweet relish and pimentos and a chunky, mashed potato consistency. If you’re a fan of sweet mustard-based potato salad, this one is right up your alley. In addition to the ribs, the beans were the best thing on my plate this visit. They were both sweet and savory, with pickled jalapeños and pieces of brisket cooked into them. Quite tasty and unlike any I’ve had elsewhere. My second visit was on a Sunday afternoon at 2:30, and I can’t help but wonder if this had anything to do with the quality of my food (Southern Q closes at 4 pm and doesn’t reopen until Wednesday at 11 am). I can’t fault a restaurant for trying to control its food costs by minimizing waste, but it would be far better to make a menu item unavailable and eat the costs than it would be to serve food far below the status quo. I can forgive a restaurant for running out of an item, but serving substandard food? Not so much. I ordered a 3-meat plate ($16.95) this time because I wanted to recheck the brisket and ribs and also try their sausage as well as some different sides. The ribs were better this time, offering more resistance while maintaining fall-off-the-bone tenderness and that delicious, slightly sweet mahogany crust.

The brisket, I’m sorry to say, wasn’t. It was once again dry, so much so that it looked as if my sliced meat had crumbled during the short trip from the cutting board to my plate. The thinly sliced sausage was a flavorful and spicy combination of beef and pork, but it, too, was dry and tired looking. I truly enjoyed the taste, but unfortunately it either spent too much time on the pit or was sliced beforehand (and too thinly in my opinion). My sides of choice this time were the green beans and Cajun rice, and I added a piece of grilled corn for good measure. The green beans were typical of what you’d find in any respectable southern family-style restaurant, cooked to a soft texture in a flavorful broth with plenty of diced onion and bacon. But that’s where the similarities end; the Garners also add small bits of brisket to theirs, and it’s this addition that elevates them from a simple side to a superlative one. The Cajun rice and the grilled corn, on the other hand, were so overcooked they had no business on the plate. The rice had looked promising, with a small dice of red bell peppers and green onions and several small chunks of what tasted to be boudin sausage. But I suspect it was Saturday’s leftover rice reheated for Sunday’s service, because it turned to mush the moment I took a bite. I don’t think I’ve ever had rice before that was this overdone. And it pains me to tell you this because the spicy flavor was fantastic, so much so that I found myself continuing to eat it despite the terrible texture. The grilled corn, too, would have been superb had it not been overdone. It was a half ear, well-buttered and dusted with a light coat of Cajun spices, but every individual kernel on the

ear was dimpled and nearly void of moisture. I only managed a few bites. I took home a half chicken ($6.45) and two sides of mac & cheese ($2.75 each) for my boys for dinner and a pint of those delicious baked beans ($5.45) to enjoy with my leftover meats. I also ordered a side of grilled corn ($.75) for my youngest, but I had received the last one of the day, so Sherice graciously offered to send me home with a piece of buttermilk chess pie in its place (price not on the takeout menu and I forgot to ask, my bad). The chicken was okay. My wife and kids enjoyed it, but I found it a touch dry and needing more rub and smoke. The mac & cheese was the same; a touch dry and I felt it needed more cheese sauce. The buttermilk chess pie was an individual-sized pie served in its own mini foil pie tin. The crust was tender and the pie was sweet and creamy with a barely perceptible tang from the buttermilk; very tasty and just the right size. My overall impression of Southern Q is still very positive despite the issues I had with some of the food. This restaurant has so much potential, partly because of its location on a busy thoroughfare and its charming décor and family-friendly atmosphere, but mostly because of its genuinely friendly and service-oriented owners and staff. Once they get through the growing pains of starting a new business, learn the intricacies and quirks of their new pit, and get their kitchen staff firing on all cylinders, I predict Southern Q may very well become a destination restaurant for barbecue purists. Southern Q is located at 16540F Kuykendahl in Houston. Their telephone number is 832-250-4851. They are open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 11am – 7pm, and on Sundays from 11am to 4pm.

THE WOODLANDS CRAVE BAKESHOP AND COFFEE

NICK’S LOCAL EATS

SHOWCASING A NEW AWESOME CONCEPT story by Nick Rama photos by Julie Soefer

Whole Foods invited me for a VIP preview of The Woodlands CRAVE Bakeshop and Coffee showcasing a new awesome concept One week after the opening of CRAVE, 50 lucky members of the “Spring/Woodlands Foodie Tasting and Deals” Facebook page got treated to a night out at CRAVE Bakeshop and Coffee. Elizabeth Harrison, one of the owners, welcomed us to CRAVE ‘s newest concept in The Woodlands. What is different between this CRAVE and their other CRAVE Cupcakes location is that their Woodlands location has added pastries and a coffee bar. Each of our members got to try a signature cupcake of their choice, any pastry and a specialty coffee. The staff was very knowledge, friendly and gracious to us. I got to sample some incredible pastries and even Nick Rama savory items like a Bacon, Cheddar and Chive Scone, Pear Galette and one of the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever had. I could really taste the high quality chocolate they used in every perfectly baked bite. I was already a fan of their cupcakes and if I was anywhere near one of their original Houston locations, I had to stop and pick up cupcakes to bring home. They are made fresh daily with the highest quality ingredients in small batches. This is going to be dangerous for me now they are so much closer to home. Well, with the new concept I am here to tell you that the pastries are as good ask, if not better than, their famous cupcakes. There are two entrance doors. The door on the right leads you into a wall size glass display case containing a wide variety of cupcakes. You can see through to their kitchen and baking areas, where the bakers are busy making fresh small batches of their cupcakes and putting on the signature dome shaped frosting. The left entrance door leads you into the pastry side of the shop with plenty of comfortable seating and tables, and once again a beautiful display of all sorts of fantastic looking pastries. The first item that caught my eye was the most perfect looking croissant I have seen in a while, along with brownies, cookies, coffee cakes, breads and even kolaches made with brioche dough. In between the two doors is the coffee bar where the Baristas are making excellent specialty craft coffee beverages from locally roasted coffee beans. They are so much better than the “chain” coffee shops that are around. No matter which door you choose, you can really take in this beautiful open space and see everything that is happening on both sides. The hardest part is going to be what yummi-

ness to choose from all of these baked goodies? I got to ask Elizabeth some questions about their newest concept, here is hest she shared with me. Nick: Glad you have finally came to the north side of town. When did you realize there was a big demand in The Woodlands for a CRAVE? Elizabeth: We have been asked by some of our most loyal customers for many years now to come to The Woodlands. We knew there would be a great opportunity for CRAVE there but we really wanted to find the right spot. Nick: The new concept is quite wonderful and open. What was your inspiration for the design and look? Elizabeth: As with our original store, we have always wanted our customers to be involved with our process and interact with us. When you walk into the door you are greeted by baristas and behind

them you can see clear through to our kitchen where bakers are loading the ovens and frosters hand craft our cupcakes. We worked with the James Beard award winning architectural firm, AVROKO, out of New York to conceptualize the space. Our goal was a modern yet cozy atmosphere - one that is inspirational and comfortable at the same time. Nick: What made you decide to add the pastries and specialty coffee side to this new concept? Elizabeth: We have always wanted to have specialty coffee and pastries but never really had the space in either of our other locations. Hence the reason it took us a while to find the perfect space in the Woodlands. We are huge cupcake fans, but we also love cookies, croissants, galettes, kolaches…you name it. All our favorites are on the menu. Coffee is such a passion of ours too and there was an opportunity to be one of the few independently owned and operated coffee shops in the Woodlands who serve fresh, locally roasted craft coffee. CRAVE Bakeshop and Coffee in the Woodlands is only one month old and our guests truly appreciate the difference. Nick: Tell us about some of your specialty craft coffee drinks and the types of coffee CRAVE uses? Elizabeth: We offer handcrafted locally roasted espresso drinks, including an exclusive CRAVE Cupcake Latte (a must try that is flavored with our frostings instead of syrups), cold brew CRAVE coffee, as well as a Slow Bar where we brew globally sourced Micro Lot coffees one cup at a time through a

Nick’s continued from page 15 specialized pour over process. Nick: What is your favorite of the new items on the menu and what has your customers been the most receptive with? Elizabeth: My favorite new item is probably the croissant. Customers have been raving about the brownies, pear galettes, and both Texas and CRAVE kolaches Nick: What sets Crave cupcakes apart from all the other specialty cupcake shops around? Elizabeth: CRAVE is a locally owned and operated bakery. Our cupcakes are our passion. We are dedicated to make sure each flavor is its finest. We bake in small batches throughout the day to ensure our customers taste them at their freshest. We use Madagascar bourbon vanilla beans, rich European style butters, Belgium chocolates, real chocolate sprinkles, and fresh fruits in our batters and frostings. We also take great pride in our customer service. We want you to not only love what you sink your teeth into but the people who take care of you, too. Nick: What flavors of Cupcakes would your customers riot over if you took off the menu? Elizabeth: Red Velvet, Strawberry, Birthday Cake, Cookies and Cream, Dark Chocolate…well all of them…we offer seasonal flavors throughout the year and we always have customers upset when we move onto a new season and replace with a new flavor.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH THE FAB 5! 1.) Describe your music and how did the band come about to have that style? We are a 60s Beatles and 60s Tribute band and have been together for 25 years. Out style is best described as British Invasion with American Retaliation.

Nick: Is CRAVE a chain/franchise? Elizabeth: No, it is locally owned by three partners, all of whom live in Houston. Nick: Does Crave have a mission statement? Elizabeth: We start every day with european butter, seasonal fruits, and the freshest of local ingredients to handmake our cupcakes, pastries, cookies, and savory treats. We lovingly craft everything we make without preservatives or hydrogenated oils and bake in store in small batches throughout the day to ensure you taste them at their finest. Crave craft coffee features our one cup at a time, ground and brewed to order using globally sourced micro lot coffees. Additionally we offer a full line of Espresso based coffees including our exclusive CRAVE coffee chillers and CRAVE Cupcake Lattes. Nick: 5 Words that describe Crave? Elizabeth: delicious, nostalgic, local, sweet, inspired.

2.) How did the band come together? How does everyone agree to play certain parts of a tribute band? The band came together in 1990 as a love and tribute to the music and style of the 60s that we all loved. Playing in a tribute band and learning all parts accurately requires discipline as a musician. In order to be successful there is no room for errors or ad lib. 3.) What are some of the venues you enjoy playing and why are they the best? Some of our favorite venues that we play regularly are Miller Outdoor Theatre, House of Blues, Stafford Centre, and Concert Pub to name a few. 4.) Has the band recorded anything, or desires to record anything? If so, what? We have recorded several CDs in the past in which we have also included original material. 5.) What is your worst road trip story? That would be one of our trips to Odessa Texas. Some of our “hair” was lost by the Airlines so we had to find a replacement in the small downtown area of Odessa. On another occasion our bass amplifier caught fire while performing “My Generation” at the old Mercury Room in downtown Houston about 12 years ago. Couldn’t have planned that one better. It made for a good show.
