LETTER RIP

INSURANCE FOR EVERYTHING

IT WASN’T ABOUT HEALTH CARE REFORM, BUT INSURANCE REFORM Before I relaunched the Public News, I spent two years working for a nationally known voluntary health insurance company. This particular company put all her duck eggs in one basket, hoping and planning on the big enrollment numbers pouring in from Obamacare. Imagine the confusion every week at our sales meeting when the latest waivers were issued and deadlines pushed back. How could any insurance company plan the success of their agents with such uncertainty in the marketplace? The smaller companies folded their tent, took their ball and went home much to the glee of the bigger players. I’m not saying that this was by design, but when you look at the Ken Petty money changing hands, from company to political coffers; it should make a person wonder about the connection. Fast forward five years and there’s barely the change in health care. It’s still very high quality, but now, no one can afford it, even with health insurance. Even now, you are penalized for not buying something that you could never use anyway. It is the great American citizen screw job. This massive FU to the American people doesn’t lay solely on Mr. O’s shoulders, although he told so many lies about what Obamacare can and would do that it would have made Pinocchio blush. That well intentioned and poorly managed house of Republicans can also take their share since most of them, including our own Mr. Brady who campaigned on defunding the monster, wimped out and threw as much money into the

abyss as he could. A drunken sailor has more scruples than this. RIP LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESSES? Is it by design or just by not being bold enough that foils some of the better laid business plans? It has got to be in the execution of those plans. It’s also the case of “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it make a sound?” Two locally owned businesses, both of which were featured in Public News’ Saucepan but were not advertisers, bit the dust over the last couple of months. I was surprised and shocked. Well, maybe not totally surprised. But it does feed the belief that, one, restaurants do not do well in Old Town Spring and, two, if you fail to tell others (advertising) then you are going to have a hard time at winning the business game. That is unless you are Puffabelly’s or Wuensche, you’d do better to land your restaurant on FM 2920, or better yet Riley Fuzzel. Anywhere that an employee at Exxon can easily get to your place, eat lunch and then get to work on time, or know that a family can eat at a reasonable cost with healthy food choices. McDonalds be damned. I understand that most restaurants are built for the dating crowd, which most of us would fall into that category. However, if you or your partner, or both, have kids, where do you go that would meet those requirements? Well, the task for the Public News is to find and promote those entities. That is, if they value the notion of advertising to a group ready to taste something new and local. As for me and my home crew, I’m going to have to go look for a new place for gluten free pizza and excellent barbeque. WATERWAY ARTS FESTIVAL WELCOMES FEATURED ARTIST SEAN BROWN THE WOODLANDS, TX – One of the many highlights of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival this year will be the whimsical jewelry and small sculptures created by Featured Artist Sean Brown from Denver, Colorado. Sean’s work will be on display at the 10th annual festival, set for Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12, 2015 along The Woodlands Waterway and in Town Green Park. “We are excited to honor Sean as our Featured Artist this year,” said Jenny Wright, Festival Director. “His jewelry and sculpture pieces are alive with color, movement and fun in a delightful, whimsical way. His pieces are extremely popular with our patrons and we welcome him to The Woodlands!” Sean comes from a family of artists – both his parents and grandparents were artistically talented and inspired him from an early age. His Mother had a pottery studio and his Dad was a graphic artist. “I learned a lot about design from watching my father in his painting studio and darkroom.” His whimsical attitude about art stems from a variety of cultural influences including African, Aztec and Egyptian art as well as contemporary pop culture. “To this, I add a liberal use of vibrant color and interesting shape along with delightful pattern,” Sean says. “The unique use of form and juxtaposition of textures reflects the sophistication that is achieved through attention to detail and deliberate use of materials.” His art combines soft, ethereal feathers that complement the hard, slick ceramic glaze surface of the jewelry and small sculptures. Gemstone beads and found objects add another layer of visual interest. Sean finds that making something with his hands that comes from his heart is very rewarding, and he enjoys sharing his art with his customers. “I have no problem with being a contemporary craft maker. I find it very respectable to create with my own hands. It’s timeless and personal.”

Sean has displayed his art at more than 200 festivals throughout the U.S. and in many galleries. Over a 20-year period of traveling to festivals across the country, he has enjoyed staying with families in the communities where the festivals are held. “It’s a great way to establish the roots of communication with the people who are seeing and buying your art, and a wonderful way to make new friends.” The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival is produced annually by The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council, a 501 (c) 3 organization that provides regional cultural and educational enrichment opportunities that encourage, support and promote the visual and performing arts. Major sponsors of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival 2015 include Stella Artois, The Woodlands Development Company, The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau and The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center. Throughout the year, The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council serves the community through its educational outreach arm called Because Art Matters (BAM). BAM is focused on four pillars of service in the community working directly with senior citizen groups, at-risk students of all ages, people with special needs and special circumstances, and partners in Montgomery County. In celebration of The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival’s 10th Anniversary, the event has been expanded to three days. Festival times are 11am – 6 pm on Friday, April 10, 10 am – 6 pm on Saturday, April 11 and 10am – 5 pm on Sunday, April 12. Adult tickets are $10 on Friday, $12 on the weekend or $15 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets to the festival and the 60-Second Art Dash Party on Friday, April 10 are now available online at www.woodlandsartsfestival.com.

ENTERGY OFFERS HOPE ON WHEELS As part of a team building exercise, 26 Entergy employees from facilities ranging from The Woodlands to Louisiana gathered at the Entergy Texas, Inc. facility and participated in a Day of Caring with Montgomery County United Way. Spending a few hours before jumping into the day to day, employees built a total of 12 bikes that were donated to Montgomery County Youth Services to benefit their Community Outreach Program which serves the homeless youth. Always putting safety first, Entergy also donated helmets to accompany

each of the new bicycles. Integrating some healthy competition into the Days of Caring event, the 26 employees broke into small groups and selected a name to represent each of their teams. At the end of the bike build, a simple vote of hands was taken to decide who had the most creative name. The winning team was awarded a $1000.00 grant in which they could donate to the charity of their choice. The 2015 winning team “Hell’s Angels” selected Montgomery County United Way’s Days of Caring program to be the beneficiary of the grant.

ready for framing. Each student is encouraged to learn at their own pace. You are welcomed to do a class-based painting from reference photos provided by the instructor, or bring in your own reference materials to use. TO THE REPUBLIC

NATIONAL NOTHING DAY! HAPPY NOTHINGNESS by Bart Pearston “Well isn’t that SPECIAL!” SNL’s The Church Lady A.K.A. Dana Carvey Well after Friday the 13th, we had “National Pi day of the Century” on Saturday. Sunday was “Mothering Day” in the UK (known as simply Mothers’ day here in the states), and Tuesday was St Patrick’s Day. But with little notice, Monday slipped right by. Seems appropriate because nothing happened on “Freedom Bart Pearston of Information Day” right? Not so fast Speed Racer. Faithful readers of “To the Republic” here now know better. You may not have even known that Monday was “FOI Day”, but that is the job of yours truly. We here at The Public News pride ourselves in giving the scoop on the things nobody else does. While the media ignored the day, it can hardly be overlooked at what happened Monday. Our President removed a policy for which he railed against while a candidate. Before you think I’ve confused Hillary’s ranting about the use of a second “secret” email account as “shredding the Constitution” in 2007 and then exclusively using one herself, let me assure you, this is almost as bad. It is supposedly “coincidence” that the reporting of 30,000 of those deleted emails are being subpoenaed by both the AP and a House

Investigation. No longer does the Office of Administration need bother with “discretionary disclosure” of such things with this policy that we are assured were all “private” correspondences. Remember being promised, “the most transparent administration in History”? It was in reference to Pres. Bush’s rejection of requests for public information. In an effort to “Clean up” FOIA regulations, Pres. Obama kicked off “Sunshine Week” by making Bush’s policy his official policy. Truly, the “chickens have come home to roost” in the White hen-house, and they apparently are being “guarded by the fox”. “The irony of this being Sunshine Week is not lost on me,” said Anne Weismann of the liberal Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. And those “guardians of the masses”, “protectors of the Public”, “The fourth estate” the press, was all over it right? I read more about the shocking news that Matt Schaub was released from the Oakland Raiders. I have to give him one thing. He has succeeded in uniting both Liberal and Conservative watchdog groups with this action. ““This is an office that operated under the FOIA for 30 years, and when it became politically inconvenient, they decided they weren’t subject to the Freedom of Information Act any more,” said Tom Fitton of the conservative Judicial Watch. Good job, President Obama, GOOD JOB. Meanwhile the crickets are chirping everywhere else but at Your The Public News “To the Republic”. Stay alert, Metro North Houston. We’ll keep on it if you will.

ART TALK

Unfolding Worlds

Kamisaka Sekka Dancing Figures ©The Israel Museum, by Elie Posner

Japanese Art from the Gitter- Yellen Collection by Rosanne Friedman a structured Confucian system that put the court first, Samurai second as bureaucrats, then farmers, then merchants and artisans. What then happened was a gradual social upheaval in that the merchants became very wealthy and the Samurai became very poor and set out on their own as ronin in order not to go bankrupt. The court and the Samurai supported the higher aesthetic of the Chinese literati painting and the merchants supported the sensual of the ukiyoe or the floating world. Roughly structured in schools these are principal ideas for understanding: Zenga: If you love the abstract expressionist movement and then saw these Zen Meditations you might be moved to find commonality as did Dr. Kurt Gitter. They are immediate gestures with bold impact. While the Zen monks were making marks for religious tutorial or meditations the abstract expressionists had a very different impulse: that of pure movement and gesture. Maruyama Shijo: These are the Realists of the Japanese Schools. Standing between two screens that belong together I am reminded of the Japanese idea of “Mono no Aware”: the ephemeral sense of the passing of time, the poignant pathos of the moving quality of existence. The idea is of holding onto something so striking with the awareness that things will change and never be the same again. The goal of that aesthetic is dear to the Japanese painter. It may be dear to painters of the west as well, but we don’t have a word for it. Flowers Rinpa: Japanese decorative painting. In Sekka’s work one finds a perfect balance between

When I walked into the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston to see the Unfolding Worlds, Japanese Art from the Gitter- Yellen Collection in New Orleans: I saw the ceramics. When I returned the next week I saw the screens. It was a layered experience. I compared it to chocolate and dessert: Ceramics as chocolate, painting on screens as dessert. To undertake learning the Japanese language you learn to count to ten. You will then learn to count to ten- ten more waysas each object has its own counting word. Things Japanese are a layered experience. This exhibit follows that truth. The Ceramics are contemporary and full of the feel of the material in rawness, refinement and structure. Ryuiki’s platter is rich in grog (ground up prefired clay) It is a gesture of the material of clay with a rawness of earth. There is a refined celadon cone in porcelain. It lifts the spirit with the lift of its own form. The screens start from the Edo or the Tokagawa period. The art in Europe at the beginning of the time of Edo was the Baroque and then the Romantics and the Neo Classicists, from Bernini in Rome (imagine the Four Rivers Fountain) then Fragonard (imagine the court princess on a swing) to David (imagine Napoleon) with Revolutions all around. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation about the same time that Japan agreed to open up to the west and the Edo period ended. In Japan, in a period of peace and stability, the Shogan set up

Matsumura Goshin Fishermen, Birds and from the Gitter-Yellen Collection

Kakurezaki, Ryuicki Gitter-Yellen Collection natural form and stylized form. The natural form is flattened and simplified and bold. In these dancing figures dressed in much earlier costumes they integrate the geometric with the organic movement of dance. Ukiyoe: art of the “floating world” was the sensual fictious world of the Courtesans, the pleasure houses and the Theatre. This evolved from the merchant classes wanting to demonstrate their riches. Manga drawing of today has its beginnings here. Eccentrics: We have the satirical, distortions, extremes, and the fantastic each nonconformist in subject, brushstroke and lifestyle. As many great artists are, they were not appreciated in their time and hold strong interest in ours. Dr. and Mrs. Gitter have established a study center of Japanese art at the New Orleans Museum of Art, they have spent forty years of collecting and studying to embrace the complexity of this intricate exhibit. To study things Japanese is to return to things Japanese that ever more reveal their riches. This collection comes to us directly from Jerusalem at the Israel Museum; it is here until May 10th. The work invites many visits.

NAVY SEALS BRING ON BATTLEFROG BATTLEFROG TRAINS THE ROUGH & READY CIVILIAN FOR SURVIVAL & FITNESS by Ken Petty

I got the email back in February announcing the coming to Houston of this thing called Battlefrog. The headline barked “BattleFrog to Bring New Obstacle Course Race Series to Texas Obstacle Course Race Group Founded by Former U.S. Navy SEALs to Bring Family & Youth Friendly Event to Houston, Dallas & Austin.” Impressed already, the note continued, “BattleFrog to Award $1 Million in Cash & Prizes to Competitors in 2015 Season Adventure-Packed Races Simulate SEAL Training, Raise Funds for Navy SEAL Veterans & Families of Fallen SEALs” Along with the press release came a number of photos from previous events. Striking was the photo of a child, crawling under some sort of wired net covering drenched in water and mud. I was intrigued but was having a hard time with seeing the image of a child in those conditions. I called the PR firm and was directed to speak with Don Mann, the Navy SEAL who serves as spokesperson and CEO for Battlefrog. As we connected on the phone, Mr. Mann alleviated any concerns I had about kids getting hurt, overwhelmed, or any other harm that one could imagine. Battlefrog is not about harm or even danger. Fellow Navy SEALS are on hand to

observe and serve. “The SEALS are also there to motivate and inspire everyone to overcome the obstacles. Battlefrog is designed for everyone, the athlete and non-athlete, from kids to old folks.” Mann explained. “Our events are unique because actual Navy SEALs are guiding and mentoring the racers who are learning how to push themselves beyond their personal physical limits.” “There are several events. The Tadpole Dash, like what is pictured with the child, is for kid’s 4-years old and up. They crawl under non-barbed wire mesh, through dirt and mud for 400 meters and their parents are with them the whole time.” “The next race up is called the Bullfrog mile and that event is for kid’s 10 years old and up. Their parents are not with them, but cheering them on from the sideline.” “The Bullfrog mile has 10 obstacles to overcome. Then you have the Bullfrog 5K which is for kids 13 and up which has up to 15 obstacles. Then there is the 15K Battlefrog that has 50 obstacles.” “There is a new event that was created this year called the Battlefrog Extreme. This event is for the elite, elite, extreme athlete who wants to keep on going for hours.” Other than being Battlefrog’s CEO, Mann served with Navy SEALS teams 1, 2 and the famed SEAL team SIX. After retirement Mann stayed on as a trainer for SEAL team SIX Mann shared the history and development of Battlefrog. The sport itself came about during the World Wars I & II. The military training demanded that participants could excel in obstacle race courses under the harshest conditions. On the civilian side, obstacle race courses were dying out. Former US Navy SEALSs designed BattleFrog as an intense new obstacle course race for all ages inspired by the challenges Navy SEALs face every day in training. BattleFrog Houston will be held on Saturday, March 28 & 29, 2015, at Rio Bravo MX Park, 11610 N Lake Houston Pkwy., Houston, Texas 77044. If you are one of the unfortunates that could not attend the event in Houston, know that two other similar events will be held within a few hours’ drive.

BattleFrog Dallas will be held on Saturday, April 11 & Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Beaumont Ranch, 10736 County Rd. 102, Grandview, TX 76050. And, BattleFrog Austin will be held on October 3 & 4, 2015 at Reveille Peak Ranch, 105 CR 114, Burnet, TX 78611. Activities begin at 7:30 a.m. and will feature heats for all participants and age levels, as well as an entire familyfriendly experience that includes interacting with SEALs, enjoying multiple attractions within the festival compound, and watching a live Navy SEAL demonstration. “BattleFrog was created as a tribute to our nation’s military and to help people learn about the work Navy SEALs do in protecting our great nation,” said Don Mann, BattleFrog chief executive officer and retired U.S. Navy SEAL member of Team SIX. “Our events are unique because actual Navy SEALs are guiding and mentoring the racers who are learning how to push themselves beyond their personal physical limits.” “Texas, we heard you!” said Mann. “We had so many requests to come to the Lone Star state. We’re looking forward to showing everyone our obstacles that are wider, longer, taller and tougher than ever before.” BattleFrog transforms every race venue into a demanding obstacle course designed to test the strength, skill, and determination of any athlete. Participants are able to choose between the BattleFrog 15K, BullFrog 5K, BullFrog Mile and TadPole Dash 400M courses, each of which is inspired by BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) Training, the six-month long qualification course that all SEALs must undergo. BattleFrog events in Texas will also feature the formal introduction of Team BattleFrog, the group’s new pro team that will be led by the top OCR athletes in North America. Racing standouts Ryan Atkins of Canada, Corinna Coffin of Virginia and Claude Godbout of Canada, have all been named as members of the new Team BattleFrog. Atkins and Coffin will serve as captains of the male and female teams, respectively. BattleFrog founders have announced that a percentage of the profits generated from the series will be shared evenly with the Navy SEALFoundation and the Navy SEAL Museum & Memorial. This direct support honors the fallen, promotes the SEAL legacy and supports the families of those who served. The 2015 BattleFrog race series will be sponsored in part by Kill Cliff, makers of the premium recovery drink. For more information or to register visit www.BattleFrogSeries.com.

Lambert and Stamp searched for months and finally found in a band called the High Numbers a rebellious restlessness that was just what they were looking for. Abandoning their plans to make a film, they instead decided to mentor and manage this group, which evolved into the iconic band known as the Who. The result was rock ‘n’ roll history. It is a 44,000-square-foot store, at the corner of Lake Woodlands and Lake Front Circle in Hughes Landing. Sippin’ at Whole Foods by Jamie Alvear

On March 18th, a new bar is opening up in the Woodlands area that is quite unique. It will offer beer, wine, and a tasty pub menu in a relaxed, comfortable setting. So what’s so unique about this bar? It’s located inside the new Woodland’s Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods is providing the ultimate sip and shop opportunity. The bar is located in the back center of the store and offers bar seating and table tops. The beautiful bar counter top is made from wood reJamie Alvear claimed from the truck decks of tractor-trailers that once traveled up and down Historic Route 66. You are welcome to sit and enjoy a beer from one of the 24 craft beers on tap or order one to take with you while you check items off your shopping list. If beer is not your thing, wine is also available. You can have a

glass of wine or pick up one of your favorite bottles for them to open and pour for you. Their traditional pub menu offers items such as burgers, pizza, wings, and fish and chips. If you’re looking for something a little different, you can pick up one of their prepared food items, order some sushi, or have a custom cheese plate made. Need to refill your beer and wine supply at home?
