Another print newspaper bites the dust. This time it is the 30-year old USA (USA Today) Weekend newspaper that is generally distributed with a local paper as a supplement. Newspaper readers are gravitating toward digital in ever increasing numbers. Print, as a medium, is almost dead. Aware advertisers ride the wave of the digital revolution. That’s why we’re already there.

VALENTINES DAY EVE SURVIVING LOVE’S FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH Valentine’s Day is this weekend. This is a good thing as most of us want to take advantage of having a whole weekend to lavish our loved one with gifts, affection and time. However there is an unfortunate trade off that can only exist when Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday. The trade off is that Valentine’s Day Eve is also Friday the 13th. That’s right, the most romantic day following the day that most Ken Petty dread, fear and distain. Folks, this happens once every 6 years at best, every 12 years at worst, so it’s not like it happens every single year. Here are some thoughts and ways as to minimize any perceived “damage” that might befall you this weekend. It is said, in some ancient manuscript somewhere, those lovers who share their first Valentine’s Day after a Friday the 13th; their relationship is doomed to fail. This is not true, to my knowledge. Then again I’ve never been brave enough to test that theory. There are a few known ways to avoid having your relationship nailed to the wall by this curse. To break this spell, it is highly suggested to just sleep in for two

whole days. Forget about setting your alarm for those days. Call in sick to work the night of the 12th to prepare for your marathon sleep-in. Record a message on your cell phone saying that you will be indisposed till Sunday the 15th. You may earn some grief by missing Valentine’s Day altogether, but you also missed Friday the 13th. Score one for the good guy here. Another method to avoid the curse is by taking in a non-stop, two-day date. Start the event on Friday the 13th and don’t say your good night’s until Valentine’s Day evening. You are messing with the demons of Friday the 13th, but they deserve it! For those of you who do not have a concern about this pairing of weekend

days, then you should carry on as always. Better yet, you should flaunt your freedom of concern. There are a few movies that you could rent on Netflix or the local Red Box that join up the romantic and horror genre of films. Fifty Shade Of Gray aside, those type of films would fit that bill perfectly. For those of you who succumbed to the curse of the pre-Valentine’s Day Friday the 13th, there is a redeeming Tuesday right around the corner called Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, the day you let everything go. This is the redeeming day for those who suffered emotional harm on the previous Friday the 13th/Valentine’s Day combo. As an arts & entertainment newspaper, it falls on us to let you know that there is a way out from the curse if all else fails. That avenue is the one that makes itself known as Mardi Gras. Take advantage of that this week.

CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY The problem with your gun law ideas is that most gun deaths happen by accident (4 year old shoots a 2 year old) or are perpetrated by people who aren’t thinking about the future or deterrents (teenage kids or psychopaths who have gone off their meds). The more guns in circulation, the more likely any given individual will get shot by accident or by some deranged nut-job. It’s basic probability mathematics. Your vision is for a world were we all walk around toting weapons on a hair-trigger, high alert, like outlaws in some wild west movie. That sounds like an awful world I’d never want to live in. My owning a gun is no more going to deter a psycho school shooter or some teenage hood than the death penalty in Texas deters murder, and it just increases the likelihood that a member of my family or I will get shot in an accident. In your example, the women getting in their car at Target, having little or no gun training, would more likely miss their target and kill a child or some innocent shopper. Andy S.

Tommy Thompson. The line-up up of films include: Thursday evening Feb 19th’s 7pm pre-theatrical release film will be “Return to the Hiding Place”. A representative from the Houston Holocaust Museum will join the audience and TXCFF team in a brief post-show discussion. Friday night at 7pm Every Village Ministries (formerly Aid Sudan) will share stories of the heroic action of the people of the new Republic of South Sudan prior to the screening of the film named “Best Christian Film of 2014” by Emma Koonse, Christian Post reporter. The title of this film cannot be revealed because of a contractual relationship involving the film’s producers. Saturday offers two films. The first starting at 5:30pm will be the wonderful comedy “Mom’s Night Out” will be screened for Moms and Dads on the large screen that stretches across Bethany’s beautiful sanctuary. While the parents are laughing at the antics of Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy) Patricia Heaton (The Middle, Everybody Loves Raymond) and Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) kids 5-12 will be in the church’s gym with members of the A. D. Players Theatrical Arts Academy learning a song and dance number they will share with the parents after the show. The church’s nursery will be open throughout the event for younger children. The festive Saturday ends with the 8pm screening of the Houston premier of pretheatrical released film “Hoovey”. The film is the true and inspiring story of the Elliott family, who refused to surrender, instead turning to one another and their faith in the worst of circumstances, to rebuild their lives, their boy, and their dreams... together. The film stars Patrick

Warburton (Seinfeld), Lauren Holly (Dumb & Dumber), and Cody Linley (Dancing with the Stars 2008). The film was shot on location in Waxahachie, Texas. The Festival organizers are excited to announce that Jeff Elliott, Hoovey’s real life father, will attend the festival and be available after the premier to answer audience questions and celebrate the family victory they experienced. “We are very excited about our feature film lineup and those guests presenting after the show. Additionally we are equally excited about the short films that will be shown in our newly renovated Screening Room throughout the festival,” said festival founder Ken Bailey. SOCIAL MEDIA TIP OF THE WEEK

So, You Got Hacked On Facebook! How To Be Safe While Enjoying Social Media Whether it’s a friend from college, an old co-worker, or your clueless grandfather, we all know someone that’s fallen victim to Facebook hackers. A 2011 report found that 600,000 Facebook accounts are hacked every day, and even with a user base as large as 1.4 billion people, that’s a lot of hacking. Learn how to protect yourself from the unfortunate nuisance that is the Facebook Hack. 1. Update your Facebook security settings There are a number of changes you can make to your security settings on Facebook to make your account Jeb Kicker more secure and less susceptible to hackers. The first of these is to enable secure browsing. Secure browsing (https) is a security feature that will encrypt your activity on Facebook where possible, making it harder for anyone else to access your Facebook information without your permission. The next step is to enable login notifications. When you activate login notifications, Facebook will send you an

alert each time someone accesses your Facebook account from a new place. This feature can be annoying if you move around a lot, but quite crucial to detecting a hack before it’s done more damage than necessary. The third setting to change is to enable cell phone login approval, which will ask you to enter a special code each time you try to access Facebook from a new place, which Facebook will text or email to you. To enable this feature, you’ll need to first have a cell phone number listed on your Facebook account.

download as a way to get into their computer. Never enter your login information to an app inside of Facebook - Facebook will never ask you to login inside an app - as this is likely a scam to steal your account.

2. Review your browser’s extensions to detect spyware Spyware does exactly what it sounds like it does: spies on your computer’s information. By checking your browser’s extension settings and deactivating extensions that appear malicious, you can close down another hacking avenue into your Facebook account.

5. Always check the web site URL when logging into Facebook Scammers will often set up web sites that look strikingly similar to Facebook, but are simply a front. Always check to ensure the URL is Facebook.com when logging in.

3. Watch out for fake pages, apps and games Be suspicious of pages that boasts offers too good to be true. You can check to see if a page is verified by Facebook by looking for the white checkmark in a blue circle. Scammers often set up fake apps and games for users to

4. Run anti-virus software on your computer Facebook recommends going through the Microsoft or Apple web sites for security updates and anti-virus software, depending on whether you’re using a Windows or Mac machine.

6. Use a unique, un-guessable password and keep it safe It’s true that “password” is the most used password on the world wide web, closely followed by “123456” and “12345678”. Use a unique password that you only use for Facebook, and nothing else. Also, don’t save your passwords in a file on your computer;

DID THE GROUNDHOG LIE? The Unfortunate Problem of Trusting Tradition Over Truth or is it the other way around? OK, so the groundhog saw his shadow in Pennsylvania last week, does ANYONE up there believe they will only have 6 more weeks of winter? I’ve been loving these 80 degree midwinter days myself. Ever notice nobody calls it “Global Warming” anymore (especially in the Northeast)? Even after the reported “hottest year on record” last month, it’s always called “Climate Change”. Here in the US, we’ve actually been having record cold and snow the past few years, so it must be the rest of the world experiencing the increase in the temps. After the hurricanes in 2005 and the drought of 2011, I was pretty sold on it, but lately I’m not so sure. Apparently, neither are the climatologists around the Earth on whether it is “anthropogenic” at all. Bart Pearston Obviously, nature has caused global warming without man’s input in the past (Ice Age anyone?) and numerous scientists have shown that solar heating is a major contributor. But he primary culprit is CO2 emissions. This week, they are claiming that underwater volcanoes caused by plate tectonic shifts are releasing 75 million tons of CO2 annually. They estimate land volcanoes contribute 240 million tons each year as well. With the total being well over 300 million tons, the annual human “contribution” is less than 1/10th that amount. It just doesn’t make sense that it is “man made”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if the deforestation by brush burning vegetation along the lush equator causes the CO2 that is normally absorbed to

8

reduce the oxygen created, wouldn’t that logically be a better explanation for the higher temps in that section of our planet? Since the “energy glutton” Americans use so much more fossil fuels shouldn’t we be the ones experiencing AGW? To make it even more confusing, a group of climatologists in England are claiming the lack of underwater volcanoes may be causing much of the climate change! I took Chemistry and Astronomy as required natural science core requirements for my Bachelor’s and even taught some high school science, but this makes no sense to me. Today, Apple announced it will be investing billions into green energy, so there must be big money potential in it or they wouldn’t bother. As Al Gore famously proclaimed, “Everything that should be up is down, and everything that should be down is up”. Next they will be manufacturing Kelly LeBrocks for everybody. Now THAT would make their stock really soar! When I read this week that astronomers have “evidence” that disproves the “Big Bang” theory explaining the origin of the universe, it’s a good thing the actress’s name is Kaley or I’d claim there was some kind of conspiracy going on. I’ve been counting my blessings lately when the “experts” predict dire drought increases, or numerous hurricanes forming, and some hitting the Gulf Coast being false alarms. You would have thought I’d learned growing up in 1970 from the media hyping predicted 10 Billion people by 2000, we had reached “peak oil production”, and a global Ice Age would be evident by 2015. Next thing you know they’ll be trying to convince me that John Stewart is leaving his high rated show on The Comedy Channel this year, wait, WHAT!!?

DISCOVERING ART AT THE HOUSTON SHIP CHANNEL by Rosanne Friedman

This artist and company went on a tour in a boat of the Houston Ship Channel, these tours are free and remarkable because they mark the 100 year anniversary and celebration of the Channel. We happened upon a fellow who works at the Ship Channel and was taking a busman’s holiday providing a tour for his grandchildren. He was proud to be working here, vibrant with information and reverence for the channel. He tells us stuff: A ship’s turn around time is 24 hours, the number of ships indicate the health of the Houston economy. Recycled cars as piles of scrap line one side, he recalls that the cars should have empty gas tanks, but once in a while one gets skipped and the ensuing explosion rocks the building where he works. The ships are huge and come from all over the world. The chemical plants are on the other side with smoke stacks billowing-- If one painted a painting of the smoke from the stacks, some of them built in the forties, no one would believe that it was realistic, the thickness of the smoke as paint opaque in the sky. The water is opaque army green, only the sunlight glazing the surface dapples its density. The artist Robert Rauschenberg hailed from Port Arthur, Texas. He grew up with these images. His work is post Abstract Expressionist, made from scraps found, combined and

redefined, letters as scrap, paint as object not embellishment. Vital records and images of life are the strong stuff of Rauschenberg, not as much abstract as they are a direct but sophisticated combine of ideas using the thinking of surrealism and dada and other ideas that came before him in art thinking and making. He calls this work “Combines”. Using non-art materials as art, art materials used as gesture rather than image. The images of industry are as bold as are Raushenberg’s approach to his work. The questions that one might ask of his work are not about beauty but about truth, work and being. Just as one would take a boat tour of the Ship Channel and first be engaged with the work that goes on here with the power of these forms settling in the water, the strength of the cranes that appear as delicate lines in the sky able to move the masses and weights off and onto these enormous carriers. The art that grows from the likes of this environment is not the work of David Hockney’s swimming pools, or lighter plays of fun. It’s the beginning of understanding modernism and the why those objects found in an art museum that may seem opaque becomes understandable by providing different questions, different contexts than those set in traditional ideas of craftsmanship and beauty that might be found in a world before Paris 1890.

SIPPIN’ AROUND TOWN AT ENVY WINE ROOM IN OLD TOWN SPRING by Jamie Alvear

Everyone likes to unwind now and then (some more often than others) with a nice glass of wine. I am always on the lookout for a great drink. Old Town Spring (OTS) has been famous for a while now for their Texas wine tasting rooms, but when I heard there was a boutique wine room serving up bold Californian wines, I had to check it out for myself. Right in the center of Gentry Square you will find Envy Wine Room. It is the pride and joy of Brad and Effie Stees. Old Town Spring was one of the first places visited when she Jamie Alvear Effie moved to Texas 17 years ago. Ever since she was a little girl, Effie had always dreamed of owning a boutique and the hometown feel of OTS was the perfect place. Three years ago, that dream became a reality

when Brad surprised her with a small shop and Why Not Envy Me Boutique was born. Wine played a central role in Brad and Effie’s first date and they both wished to expand the boutique and their love for wine into a

“sip and shop” kind of place. Seven months ago they moved to a bigger location and Envy Wine Room opened its doors. At first, they started out with only 20 wines, but have now expanded to over 90. All the wines in the shop are handpicked by Brad and Effie and include mainly wines from California. There are also over 25 unique craft beers available for the non-wine drinkers. They have a loyal following of customers, including myself, and most of us have become like extended family to the charming couple. I recently approached Effie with the idea of hosting a cupcake and wine tasting exclusively for the members of The Spring/Woodlands Foodie Tasting and Deals Facebook group. Although common in California, this kind of pairing is fairly new in our area. Effie did not let that stop her. She partnered with Rich and Hazel Marcel, owners of Cake Swirl in OTS, and came up with four delicious pairings. The event was a sell out! The first course started with a Meyer Lemon cupcake paired with HLSR award winner, Ana Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough (New Zealand). The second course was a Vanilla Bean cupcake paired with Bruce Wayne Chardonnay, Sonoma County (no relation to Batman). Next up was a Red Velvet cupcake paired with Juliet Pinot Noir, Australia. Finally, we ended the night with a Triple Chocolate cupcake paired with Jigar Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley. The wines were all outstanding on their own, but each cupcake did such a good job of complementing the wine and enhancing the flavor. For me, the star of the night was Juliet, fruit forward and subtle, but with a smooth and vibrant finish.

ROBERT HARRIS MANAGER: SPACE CADETS COLLECTION COLLECTION I met my wife in first grade. She was a twin which was cool since it was the first time I ever met one. My first real memory of her was in second grade when we were in the same class and she got in trouble for sitting on top of a desk. She cried for an hour. I thought, “What a nerd!” We become boyfriend/girlfriend in fifth grade. She was the first girl I kissed. But there is some unwritten guy rule that you can’t have the same girlfriend moving from grade to middle school. In eighth grade, I was dating her twin sister, which did not go well at all. As years went by in high school; I shared a few classes with her. At the end of my junior year, there was a yearbook banquet and I needed a date. My black book was not that full of names, so the first girl I asked was a girl I worked with at the time. She told me no, so I had to find a back-up date. I remembered my girlfriend from first grade and called asking if she remembered me. She did, and we ended up going out to the banquet and have been together ever since. That banquet date is still celebrated between the two of us. We’ve never really been separated except for our first year of college. Every single weekend I would go and get her from her college and bring her here so we could spend the whole weekend together then Sunday night I would take her back to her school. Our freshman year in college I set up an event to propose to her, got a limo, and drove us home to where our friends and family were there to celebrate. She was very surprised.

BILLY MAXWELL BUYER: BEDROCK COMICS I met my wife in 2000 at college. I was a senior and she was an incoming freshman. The way we met was pretty funny. I had met one of her roommates in her dorm room at an orientation. Then about a week or so later we had a back-to-

VIVIAN MCEWIN OWNER: THE LAVA COOKIE Let me backtrack for a couple of years. I had some best friends growing up in high school that were older than I. We did everything together every day. I ended up moving away. They were also close friends with my husband back when he was in the army. I had never met him or knew of him. When I moved away, he had moved back and got to hanging out with my friends. When I moved back I wanted to see what my friends had been up to. When I finally got to meeting up with my friends I met this “cute little Asian boy” that had been hanging out with them. I thought he was a jerk, at the time. He kept telling me the same line and shaking my hand. “Oh Vivian,” he would say, “I have heard so much about you!” I kept thinking “Does he have another line?” What I found out later is that his best friends, my long time best friends, told him all these stories about this mysterious Vivian and now here I was finally in person. However by the end of that evening I knew that I wanted him in my life for the rest of my life, either as a best friend or as something more than that. That was in September and we were married that next April. We’ve been married now for 24 years

NICK RAMA OPTICIAN: MANN EYE INSTITUTE FOOD EDITOR: PUBLIC NEWS Funny story on how Claudia and I met. We went to the same High School, but really didn’t know each other then. I worked at Taco Bell at the time with employees who were terrible at their jobs and kept putting onions in her Bean Burrito. She is crazy and onions displeased her greatly. So one day she flung an onion filled burrito at my head. I should have ran, but twenty years and one awesome kid later, we are still best friends and happily married. school party at a frat house and this roommate of hers had gone back to her dorm and thrilled the other girls with tales about this guy named Billy. I had no idea that any of this was being said or done. My future wife, Erin, had heard about this guy that her friend had met and was very intrigued at the time. So, later at a party Erin wanted to meet this guy that she heard about from her roommate. Later when I showed up to this party, I got to looking around and I found what I thought was one of the prettiest girls in the room (Erin). I went up and said hello and we hung out together for the rest of the night. Afterwards, we agreed to hang out some more. A week later, Erin came over to my place and we just hung out. We basically became inseparable and been together ever since. We got married in 2007.

story by Nick Rama photos by John Wade

Treat! is owned by Shar Ron Aaron and Shirley Sembritzky, both of whom have a background in both the food industry and customer service. Shar Ron and Shirley decided to open this delightful cupcake shop because they saw a line wrapped around a cupcake shop across town. They tried the cupcakes there and decided they could do much better. Treat! offers 18 flavors of cupcakes daily, made from scratch, not including the breakfast

offerings available at 8am (Maple Bacon cupcakes, Blueberry Cream Cheese muffins and Fried/Baked Hand Pies). In addition to their cupcakes, they have Sugar Cookies, Cake Pops and Pup Cakes for your doggie (honey, molasses, peanut butter and carrot) perfectly blended into a gourmet treat for your four-legged friend. I sat down with Shar Ron and Shirley to learn how they built their dream business and here is what they had to say: Nick: What sets you apart from all the other Cupcake businesses around town? Treat! Cupcakes: We only use the finest ingredients available; we buy from businesses like Swiss Chalet. Only the top of the line goes into our cupcakes: European butter, Nick Rama Madagascar vanilla and European chocolates. We make fresh lemon and lime curd, fresh strawberry & raspberry jam. Even our marshmallow crème

your shop? Treat! Cupcakes: Shirley and Shar Ron both previously worked at Champions Golf Club. Their job was taking care of the customers needs and knowing what they wanted. We lived and worked with a famous golfer, Jack Burke, he told us to “Buy the best you can buy and try not to screw it up” and treat your business and customers like “Everyday is Grand Opening day”. We live those words everyday. Mr. Burke has really been an inspiration. When we opened, Vintage Park was 90% vacant. Our friends and the members of Champions Golf Club really paved the way to our success by their patronage. Nick: What are some of your best sellers? My favorite is the Rocky Road Cupcake. Treat! FAKE ASTROLOGY

HOW THIS WEEK’S ASTROLOGY PAIRS YOU WITH A 70’S TELEVISION CHARACTER by Chris Alvarez

Aries - (Mar. 21 - April 20) - Aries, this week you will find yourself calm, cool and collected. Much like your tie-in character Vinnie Barbarino (played by John Travolta in Welcome Back Mr. Kotter), nothing is going to ruffle your feathers because of the ongoing fear of a backhand slap. Regardless, you are well liked no matter how hapless you may be perceived.

put on the persona of Danny Bonaduce’s Danny Partridge; you know the Partridge family scene stealer who thinks that a bass guitar should be strummed and not plucked. Trust me; any ruse you put forward is going to get you into more trouble than you would want to bargain for.

Taurus - (Apr. 21 - May 21) - Taurus, this week you are going to take things in stride with a lot of innocence and a tad bit more zaniness than you are probably use to. This is a good thing. You needed to let your hair down for a long time. So don’t be surprised if you find yourself channeling Mork (Robin Williams character from Mork & Mindy) in your on-again off-again relationships.

Leo - (July 23 - Aug 22) - Leo, somehow you thought that you were going to be blessed with some 70’s era cop or doctor from a medical show. No such luck, peanut. This week is a far stretch for you in reality as you are going to tie-in with a 70’s Saturday morning cartoon character who thinks nothing of dropping the shoeshine gig, putting on a cape and flying through the air to beat up bad guys. Not a bad gig for someone who will be mimicking Underdog all week.

Gemini - (May 22 - June 21) - Gemini, you are the captain of your own ship this week and romance is near. Your 70’s tie-in is Gavin MacLeod’s as Captain Merril Stubing of the Love Boat. Nothing this week will deter you from finding that special someone or helping someone find their special someone.

Virgo - (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) - Virgo, you knew this was coming. You still have the habit of reading other horoscopes in order to see how yours compares. Well Colombo, keep looking. The answer you are looking for will be found, you just need to maintain your focus and continue to press on until you discover the truth.

Cancer - (June 22 - July 22) - Cancer, A little mischief will find its way to you this week as you

Libra - (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) - Libra, a late night peacock network show is your tie-in, we just don’t

know which one of the seven Not Ready For Prime Time Players you are. You could be a Jane Curtin, a Chevy Chase or even a Garrett Morris. Obviously you are going to pick one of those five still with us as you are going to need to be alive to deal with all the crap coming down your way. Keep the humor going. It’ll help you get out of some hairy situations this week. Scorpio-(Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)- Scorpio, you are caught between two extremes like a middle child. Let’s pick one, say, Jan Brady. Cry “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” all you want, it’ll never change the fact that you are not the older experienced child nor are you the young impressionable one. You are just there. Like a space between two words. No worries though, this is just a phase and it’ll be all over come next week. Sagittarius- (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21)- Sagittarius, you’re a drama queen but not just any drama queen (or drama king if you’re a dude) You are Mary Hartman, the soap opera parody character. No one really takes you seriously even though you are about as dramatic as those other folks on Dallas, Falcon Crest or Dynasty. Sometimes, the act follows you, sometimes, you follow the act. Either way, no one’s buying into it and will probably wait

it out to see if you gain clarity of mind. Capricorn - (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) - Capricorn, whether you are the life of the party or putting on the Life of Brian, one of the members of the British Comedy troupe Monty Python will be your spirit guide this week. So, put away your lupins, stop arguing, and don’t perform any strange Broadway in a court room, unless you want to be hauled away as if you were a loony! Aquarius-(Jan. 21 - Feb. 19)- Aquarius, you and Pisces are sharing a pair of characters from the same 70’s television show, The Odd Couple. Either character could be considered good or bad. You ended up with Felix Unger (played by Tony Randall) the neat freak. I’ll repeat, you are the neat freak this week. You are going to get your life in order, clean house, wash the car and get on everyone nerves all at the same time. Neat trick, if you survive the week. Pisces-(Feb. 20 - Mar. 20)- Pisces, on the flip side (see Aquarius), you are Oscar Madison (the “other” odd couple character played by Jack Klugman), your “heaven may care” attitude is endearing to some with the exception of those closest to you who secretly wish that you’d get a life.
