Another print newspaper bites the dust. This time it is the 30-year old USA (USA Today) Weekend newspaper that is generally distributed with a local paper as a supplement. Newspaper readers are gravitating toward digital in ever increasing numbers. Print, as a medium, is almost dead. Aware advertisers ride the wave of the digital revolution. That’s why we’re already there.

LETTER RIP

STOPPING THE WHACK JOBS WITH CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY

NEWS BRIEFS

TEXAS WOULD BE THE IDEAL LAB TO PROVE THIS WORKS This past week boggles my mind as to the senseless amount of violence that occurred within miles of the readership of the Public News. Firstly, Spencer Golvach, bassist for proggy Houston post-hardcore trio The Dead Revolt was shot and killed in an alleged random act of violence by an undocumented immigrant. A few hours later, this alleged shooter took one more life before losing his own in a gun battle with a Houston police officer. Secondly, at the Super Target located in Spring, a gunman attempting a shot at two Ken Petty carjacking women hitting one of them in the head. The gunman, as of press time, is still on the loose. This is just a sampling of what is going on around the nation and it’s not getting any better. It pains me to no end to read about unarmed citizens being attacked, and some being killed for no reason, by the lawlessness of another person. What would stop a person like this? Would it be to make more gun laws? Would it be to make gun manufacturers quit producing firearms of any kind? Would it be to confiscate all guns currently registered? No. Criminals don’t obey gun laws, so why do our legislators pass those kinds of laws anyway? Taking extreme and unconstitutional measures such as registering firearms

is just one step removed from disarming the citizenry. Criminals would have an unfettered access to commit any crime they could get away with. It seemingly exists now. I have a rather sane approach to this. Let’s follow the letter of the constitution and allow people to arm themselves without having to jump through bureaucratic hoops and unnecessary gun registration. After all, the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms, without being infringed. I can hear the arguments now. What about those mentally unstable people. Should they have access to a gun? Does anyone remember Sandy Hook? The shooter here did not “have a gun” of his own, but he did get a hold of one and used that to commit the atrocity that he did. What sane, or deranged, person would dare commit a crime where anyone of his victims might also be carrying a weapon? The only thing that stops a criminal shooter is a law abiding, gun carrying citizen. Perhaps this would not have helped Spencer Golvach, as his killer did not signal his intention to harm. It was a modern day ambush that killed an innocent man. But, the women getting to their cars at the Spring Super Target could have but an end to that maniacs design to take a car and kill a woman or two. People like this are out there, still. We need to be aware. We need to be careful. We need to be armed. Constitutional Carry laws are the only way to ensure and affirm the protection of our 2nd Amendment rights.

Seven members of SST will be competing in the speech contest, four of which will be competing in both International and Tall Tales speeches. The contest is a very structured event for the club, unlike regular club meetings. HOUSTON – Do family-run businesses have more fun? According to the principals of Houston-based interior design firm MP Studio, the answer is an unequivocal “Yes!” Design director Shana Jacobs and lead designer Brittany Biddle are cousins who believe they are living proof that businesses can benefit from combining the talents of family members. MP Studio is owned by Don Meeks, CEO of Meeks + Partners, who happens to be Jacobs’ uncle and Biddle’s father. In all, seven family members work alongside each other when the companies get the opportunity to join forces for a project: Mindy Meeks, MP Studio’s shopper who purchases all the accessories and runs the showroom, is Don’s wife; their son Donnie, a trained chef, is now an intern at MP Studio, changing his career path by going back to school to study interior design; Meeks’ sons Ryan and Trevor are both architects at Meeks + Partners, with Ryan serving as a partner of the firm. Biddle explained that although MP Studio was acquired by Meeks, it remains independent, operating as a “sister company” to the architecture firm. And when the firms work together – which they often do – the closeness they share provides a definite advantage for all involved. “There’s a level of trust and confidence in one another that we think creates a strong sense of teamwork,” she said. Shana Jacobs was the owner of Jacobs Design Group, a single-family interior design firm, before selling her business to Meeks, who said he has had visions of creating an interiors group since he found out his niece was studying design. After receiving her degree in interior design, Jacobs went to work for some of the best design firms in the state, gaining the experience, skills and confidence needed to launch her own firm. “MP Studio and Meeks + Partners have two separate office spaces within the same building,” she said. “We normally operate separately from one another unless working on a project together.” MP Studio still does a lot of single-family design, but “If we’re working on a multifamily project

together, there is a lot of back and forth between the two companies,” Jacobs said. For example, Meeks + Partners recently provided the architecture for a multifamily clubhouse for which MP Studio designed the interiors. “While working on our construction document set, we were able to refer to the architectural set multiple times to make sure the sets coincided with one another,” Jacobs said. “Being in the same building allows us to be more efficient, thorough and detailed when working on projects together.” Biddle said that recently Meeks + Partners also worked with MP Studio on the design of a clubhouse in Fredericksburg, Va. “Because we worked with Meeks + Partners on the club, we were able to get our hands on the floor plans earlier than we typically would,” she said. “As a result, we were better able to control lighting, fixture and electrical locations – all of which are crucial to our design.” Jacobs said what she likes best about having a family business is the relaxed atmosphere, ease of communication and a greater drive to succeed. “We are all counting on each other,” she said. “We are all close, so it is also fun to see each other throughout the day and just say ‘Hi.’” Biddle said the whole family loves design. “We all have done our share of home renovations and DIY projects,” she said. “We are a big Italian family, so we love going out to eat together and sharing our ideas.” For more information, visit MPstudiodesign.com. About MP Studio Located at 16000 Memorial Drive in Houston, MP Studio is a full-service interior design firm specializing in single and multifamily design. Sister company to architecture firm Meeks + Partners, MP Studio is committed to offering exceptional design services that meet the specific needs of architects and developers. The design team has combined decades of experience and apply their passion for creating spaces that are captivating and timeless. At MP Studio, each client is provided with an easy, collaborative design experience in which the principals are readily available for consultations.

TRIBUTE TO MAE WEST FEBRUARY 11th 2pm-3pm HUNTSVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY The Huntsville Public Library will present Mary Anne Burkhalter’s “Tribute to Mae West” on Wednesday, February 11, from 2-3 p.m., in the Library’s Community Room. Ms. Burkhalter has portrayed Miss West across the country for over 20 years, bringing rare songs and material to the show, and takes great pride in keeping the comedienne’s work alive in her “Tribute to Mae West.” Her comedy carries over into the audience, as she employs a unique brand of walk-around humor and involves audience members in on-stage comedic skits. Mae West rose to international stardom, and in 1932 was the highest-paid woman in America. Ms. West was notorious for her snappy wit and controversial characters, and notable for writing all her own material. Mary Anne Burkhalter was raised in Houston, where her first role was playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at the Alley Theatre. She has since performed from coast to coast and overseas, and is currently writing and performing more than a dozen musical shows. The Huntsville Public Library is located at 1219 13th Street. TO THE REPUBLIC

“It’s Like Deja’ vu all over again” -Yogi Berra by Bart Pearston

ART TALK

THE SLAVE SHIP by J.M.W. TURNER by Rosanne Friedman

Each year our family watches the comedy film “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray and Andie McDowell. The plot is the ultimate hellish deja’vu trip. It only ends when he learns from his past and then changes. For me, last week wasn’t nearly as funny for me as I was in a second accident involving a college-aged driver. I’m fine physically, but this is getting expensive! In both accidents, the other drivers claimed I was at fault though they wouldn’t provide any details why. I suspect they were texting while driving but I had no Bart Pearston proof. One of my many disappointments with “Governor Rick” was his veto in 2011 of the bill banning texting while driving for those above 18 as well as those under. I suspect it was due to cellular phone company lobbying pressure, but he claimed it was, “an expansive government intrusion on the behavior of adults” while admitting that, “texting while driving is dangerous, irresponsible, and reckless”. Speaker Craddick expressed regret over the bill which would have greatly increase public safety being vetoed. All laws restrict the behavior of those affected and protecting them is hardly an “unwarranted” intrusion when distracted driving is the fastest growing cause of traffic “accidents” and fatalities. My other disappointment was his refusal to require E-Verify to protect jobs for US citizens

6

FEBRUARY 4 - 10, 2015

or those with legal work visas in Texas. I too, felt his “donors” in the home building and agriculture industries played a huge in that decision. It’s way past time for both of these. Fortunately BOTH bills are being reintroduced this session. I fully support constitutional checks and balances, but when duly elected representatives overwhelmingly pass legislation, it is “downright undemocratic” to veto them. In 2006, Perry was elected with only 39% of the vote in a four-way gubernatorial election. I hardly feel he had any popular mandate and won’t miss his propensity to cater to special interests over the public’s will. If Perry’s poor 2012 debate performances, his 1988 Texas chairmanship of Al Gore’s candidacy, and his granting in-state tuition for illegal Immigrants don’t keep him from ever being his party’s presidential nominee; his reputation of catering to lobbyists surely will. I say it’s time he rides off into the sunset. As we prepare for more vetoes nationally, a proposed federal budget well in excess of $4 trillion with an expected deficit of a $500 billion even with new $144 Billion in additional taxes, and numerous battles with Congress trying to rein in runaway deficit spending, I’m reminded of the old Yogi saying, “It’s like Deja’vu all over again.” I’m afraid it’s more like “Groundhog Day” and won’t stop until they learn and change. (Sorry, if I spoiled the plot folks). Wouldn’t it be nice if Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast of six more weeks of winter applied to our government’s “kicking the can down the road” and we can look forward to a change soon? Hey, I can dream can’t I?

PUBLIC NEWS

Mr Turner is a biographical movie about J M W Turner currently playing at the River Oaks Theatre in Houston. The New York Times called this the best film about an artist ever made; the Houston Chronicle gave it one and a half stars. What’s going on here? The movie resembles his paintings in atmosphere. Facts about Turner emerge from dialog between characters and direct replaying of some events. Turner was a salt of the earth fellow from the working class, working very hard, showing signs of extraordinary talent very young. His first painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy when he was 15, he was a fellow of the Royal Academy throughout his life. He left 20,000 works in his wake. He chose to give them to the country rather than sell them to a ready buyer. During his life Turner was derided as his paintings became more and more abstract—about movement, gradiated light, color, atmosphere and pure space pushing all of art toward Modernism. Now those late works are celebrated. His last words were, “God is the Sun.” Turner’s lifelong pursuit of Radiance and Nature overpowering man are lessons for all time. The standard of the early 19th century, before the camera came along and changed everything, was that the subject matter of painting had a pecking order: first history painting, then portraiture, landscape (seascape) and then still life. On The Slave Ship, Turner’s answer was to put current events in the seascape. The capsizing of a Slave Ship was a comment to the times; Slavery was being outlawed in more and more countries around the world.

Britain moved against slavery in 1801, the United States in 1863. Viewers may be enchanted by this light and movement pulling us in and around the canvas, feeling rather than just seeing the waves and then Turner, always the master draftsman, shocks us with those perfect images of bodies in shackles and drowning. Nature itself screams, the painting works to plunge and lift us to the moral outrage that Turner felt. Should you look at his paintings as movement, the painters whose primary focus was gesture look to Turner as their first. Should you look at his paintings as color, he instructs the colorists. Should you look at his paintings as a celebration of visual accuracy, he speaks to the realists. Should you look at his paintings as atmosphere he is the Father of the impressionists. Should you look at his paintings as pure form, he predates the Modernists. Should you look to painting for social protest, one more time we find Turner right there. When visiting the Tate Gallery, where many Turner paintings are found, I found myself sitting in a lecture where the speaker suggested this: The French and Italian artists first choose beauty, the British, Germans and the Americans first choice is Truth. The movie about Turner is British, it’s first choice is truth but it’s not an easy truth. Mr. Turner is a must see.

A FOODIE’S PERSPECTIVE

Taste of the Town 2015: A Foodie’s Perspective By Paul Van Deusen

Imagine a venue where you could taste a diverse sampling of foods from some of the area’s best and most popular restaurants, as well as an adult beverage or two, and you were free to go back and resample your favorites as often as you wished. In other words, a “Best Of” buffet, and all for the price you’d probably spend on dinner for yourself at many of these same establishments. Paul Van Deusen Sound like a foodie’s dream? Well it was, at least for me. And hopefully for several dozen of my foodie peers from two local Facebook foodie groups to which I belong: the Woodlands/Spring area, Tx. Foodie Club and the Spring/Woodlands Foodie Tasting and Deals group. Last Thursday we had the pleasure of attending the 29th Annual Taste of the Town at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott. Nick “Spring Foodie” Rama, whom you have read here and is also an administrator for the Foodie Tasting and Deals group, secured sixty tickets which he then distributed to foodie group members at a discounted rate. I suppose that this being my first time ever to attend probably added exponentially to my enjoyment, just as I’m sure some veteran foodies who’ve been many times before may describe it as “meh.” The key is to get there early (I planned to, then life got in the way) because it does get crowded between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Almost like Christmas-shopping-at-the-mall crowded. Another important factor: eat a smaller than usual lunch, preferably earlier than you’re used to, if you’re even thinking about sampling everything there. Or just skip lunch altogether. By my count, there were some thirty-three or so restaurants participating this year, which is a drop from the fifty-nine the Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce claims participated last year. I’m not including businesses such as Woodforest Golf Club or Silverado Assisted Living; while they were serving food at the event, they’re by no means restaurants. Most of the restaurants were part of local or national chains (i.e. Ruggles Green or Buca di Beppo), and there were a handful of independent, local restaurateurs (i.e. Schilleci’s New Orleans Kitchen),

also referred to as “mom and pops” in the food groups. By far my favorite of the night was America’s for their Paella and Tres Leches. The paella was perfectly cooked (no easy feat when you’re cooking a large amount of rice that then has to sit and hold). The flavors were spot on with just enough cayenne kick to give it some oomph, and it included pieces of bacon-wrapped quail, a welcome addition that put it way over the top. One of my dining companions, Rachel, told me that their Tres Leches was the best in town, and my first bite confirmed it. Wet, sweet and creamy (but not overly so), it had a spongy, cornbreadlike texture that is the hallmark of a good Tres Leches and allows it to soak up the three milks without becoming soggy. The topping was extra rich and creamy as well, and tasted like a cross between whipped cream and buttercream frosting. Hands down the best Tres Leches I’ve ever had. Other restaurants I favored were Schilleci’s New Orleans Kitchen for their Shrimp and Crawfish Creole and their Bread Pudding with a warm Pecan Praline Sauce; Morton’s Grille for their Asian-inspired Tuna Poke Nacho with Avocado and their Braised Beef Short Rib Sandwich; Refuge Bar & Bistro for their Cheddar Poblano Soup and their Prosciutto Bruschetta; and Hello Taco for their Carnitas and Carne Asada Tacos and their Marilyn’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cake. Surprisingly enough, the restaurant chosen as the 2015 People’s Choice Winner received poor marks from the foodies with whom I spoke and in multiple comments I read in the Facebook food groups. Bob’s Steak and Chop House served a Prime Filet Mignon Crostino with a Horseradish Cream Sauce, and several people said the meat was overcooked and the crostini were stale. I didn’t try Bob’s myself (and I really wished I would have now, given the controversy), but I can tell you that this is very puzzling Bob’s consistently receives rave reviews in both food groups for the quality of their food. But everyone has an off night now and then, right? With all the new restaurants anticipated to be opening in our community over the next twelve months, hopefully Taste of the Town 2016 will be the largest yet. As an avid foodie who loves to cook and eat, I’m already looking forward to it. I just hope that I can get there earlier next year. And that I remember to skip lunch!

UNIVERSAL JOY

AWAKEN YOUR JOY: INCORPORATING MORE JOY INTO EVERY DAY! by Joy Winkler

had always been addicted to achievement. I hungered for the next accomplishment, the next accolade to give me a quick “fix” of happiness. I worked my butt off to be valedictorian of my high school, head cheerleader, and then obtain a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University. I say this not to brag, but quite the opposite. All this just led to my exhaustion and burnout, not the fulfillment and satisfaction I so desperately was seeking. Deep down, I knew there was more to life than the “keeping up with the Joneses” rat race, and this deep desire to experience more, to live fully and powerfully, was what eventually led me to yoga and the world of conscious transformation. One of the beautiful things about life is that all this scrambling to achieve peace and fulfillment is designed to fail. At some point, we realize it’s our birthright to experience more than just fleeting glimpses of happiness. It’s my desire to share with you what I’ve learned the hard way and what’s taken years to get through my thick skull about letting go and choosing to experience bliss and love right here, right now.

Would you like to be happier? Would you like to live your life fully and passionately? Who wouldn’t? At the end of the day, this is all that any of us want. But we’re such funny creatures: rather than just feeling happy now, we delay that happiness, putting it off until the day we’ve achieved this goal or that accomplishment, telling ourselves “once I finally get this job, this relationship, once I lose ten pounds, then I can be happy.” But take it from me, someone who has spent a good portion of her life compulsively chasing the next and bigger achievement, hoping that somehow that achievement would finally bring fulfillment: this is a delusion. And it’s not our fault; we’ve just been trained backwards. We end up living our lives just chasing our tails in search of how to achieve this elusive contentment, and never allowing ourselves to enjoy where we are. Now please remember that this is not our fault; we’ve just been trained backwards. My focus is to share and explore ways that we can retrain ourselves. In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing and exploring ways that we can all wake up to feeling truly happy and really fulfilled on a visceral level. I hope you’ll join me on this journey as together we discover how to awaken to experiencing joy in each and every day. For the past fifteen years I have been a yoga instructor, guiding thousands of my students through yoga poses, breathing techniques, and meditation practices – all designed to help them release stress and tension held in their bodies. I have witnessed students making profound changes in their bodies and in their lives, truly amazing results. LE PAM’S HOUSE OF CREOLE BRINGS LOUISIANA ZING TO NORTH HOUSTON The first time that I walked in to Le Pam’s House of Creole, I was greeted by the most welcoming lady (owner and chef Pamela Graham). I took a few steps forward and she could tell it was my first time there. She gave me a sample of her Gumbo and I was instantly glad I decided to walk in. I knew I had found “flavor town!”. Pam instantly makes you feel like you are in her house and you are a friend or family that has come for her authentic New

Orleans creole/Cajun cooking. In the front is a steam table containing today’s entrées and sides. The menu board above the steam table has some of Le Pam’s regular madeto-order dishes, like the best Po-Boy I have had in a very long time with bread shipped in from New Orleans. The shrimp are so fresh I swear they jumped out of the ocean, peeled themselves in the air. Landed in her wonderfully seasoned batter and asked Pam to fry them up. These are not tiny shrimp like other po-boys I have had. I have told many of our area foodies and friends about Le Pam’s House of Creole and most of them are hooked after one visit. Most of them so far agree with me that Pam’s personality is so great and if a personality has to match someone’s cooking, this is a match made in heaven. Both Pam and her cooking are a little bit spicy, a lot enNick Rama joyable and as welcoming as New Orleans. I sat down with Pam and had to know how she came up with this wonderful food with a

Lambert & Stamp R 120 min Documentary Aspiring filmmakers Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert set out to find a subject for their underground movie, one that will reflect the way it feels to be young and dissatisfied in postwar London. This unlikely partnership of two men from vastly different backgrounds was inspired by the burgeoning youth culture of the early 1960s. Lambert and Stamp searched for months and finally found in a band called the High Numbers a rebellious restlessness that was just what they were looking for. Abandoning their plans to make a film, they instead decided to mentor and manage this group, which evolved into the iconic band known as the Who. The result was rock ‘n’ roll history. Nick: What made you decide to open a restaurant in Houston, TX (btw, I am so glad it’s on the north side) Chef Pam: After extensive research Houston, Texas was the obvious choice both economically and an opportunity to introduce Houstonians to Original New Orleans Cuisine. Nick: Every Sunday you have something called “Sunday Dinner”. Tell our readers what that is exactly. Chef Pam: Every Sunday we went to church and always ended up at my Grandmother’s house for Sunday dinner. It is a tradition that I want to share with everyone I come in contact with. Nick: Judging by your welcoming personality, I can tell that customer service is very important to you. What sets you apart from the other chain Cajun/Creole places? Chef Pam: First I am not a chain or a restaurant. I am your home away from home, and I greet everyone as a part of my family. Nick: After tasting your Bread Pudding with VSOP Brandy Sauce and Cobblers, you can bake too. Are these family recipes or did you make them up yourself? Chef Pam: Every item on my menu including

Nick: I have already talked about the amazing freshness of your Shrimp, but I would love to know where your seafood comes from? Chef Pam: This is my only advantage being a small business and I choose not to disclose who my resources are. Just know that I am always striving to provide my family with the highest quality ingredients. Nick: Speaking of freshness, do you cook everything from scratch? Also why do you choose to get your bread from Louisiana? Chef Pam: Yes of course I do. There is nothing to compare to New Orleans French Bread. The soft buttery crust and light airy bread make a Po Boy what we know it to be, there is no substitution for New Orleans Bread. Nick: If you had to describe your restaurant in 5 words, what will they be? Chef Pam: Family, Food, Fun, Home, Hospitality Le Pam’s House of Creole is located at 1644 FM 1960 West (Cypress Creek Parkway), Houston, TX 77073 Their telephone number is (281) 444-1464 and you can find them online at www.lepamshouseofcreole.com

Aries-(Mar. 21- April 20)- Aries, work it out this week. You’ll need the discipline of a structured day, a healthy meal and a good round of exercise. What you are about to face next week beats a meeting with the boss. That’s right, the in-laws. No one bothered to tell them that you two haven’t tied the knot yet, and now the game is on.

Cancer-(June 22-July 22)- Cancer, Dust In The Wind is not just a song by that 70’s band Kansas. It’s also the way you handle conflict, disregarding it and blowing it off. Well, tough it up buttercup. Taurus-(Apr. 21- May 21)- Taurus, you’re still confused about the Chinese fortune cookie that cancelled out the one you read last week. Forgetaboutit. I don’t even know why those things are in English anyway. I was never given a fortune cookie when I visited China last month. I think it’s because the Chinese are aware of the con. You should be too.

Leo-(July 23-Aug 22)- Leo, let it be known that no one, yes, no one can walk in and take the computer you are using when you are at the library. You need to build a strong reserve and a good backbone. That’s probably why those bullies downtown thought you were an easy pick when they grabbed your laptop and ran. By the way, it would serve you well not to keep certain things on your machine. Not that it’s illegal, but your girlfriend certainly should not find out.

Maybe it’s because you have no idea where you are going, yourself? Kind of like the life you are living. Get a clue little shrew and make a plan Stan.

Virgo-(Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)- Virgo, you should quit reading these other horoscopes and pay attention to this fake astrology reading that was meant for you. As it is, you are going to purposely live life pretending to be an Aquarius since you thought
