Another print newspaper bites the dust. This time it is the 30-year old USA (USA Today) Weekend newspaper that is generally distributed with a local paper as a supplement. Newspaper readers are gravitating toward digital in ever increasing numbers. Print, as a medium, is almost dead. Aware advertisers ride the wave of the digital revolution. That’s why we’re already there.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.” – Mark Twain (American Author)

I am bothered. Yes, really hot and bothered by what I read regarding the armed assault on a French satire magazine’s office by a small group of Islamists, leaving twelve people dead. Think hard on this, twelve artists and editors (and one police officer) died all because of a cartoon depiction of the prophet Mohammad. On the flip side, I am also rankled by the antics of a certain Woodsboro Baptist Church who seems to think it is called to picket funerals of those members of the military who have been killed overseas defending liberty. The Woodboro picketers are not picketing in anger against war, but against issues not even related to the military engagements. Woodboro chooses these Ken Petty funerals to picket about social lifestyle choices. None of which are associated with those brave souls who gave their lives so these yahoos can picket and make fools of themselves. Let’s think hard about something. If you really want to change the world through your religion and if you can’t persuade someone to join your religion, it’s bad policy to decide to put them in chains, burn them at the stake, send them to the lions, or even sever their heads from their bodies. It’s as if we’ve lost all sense of civility. Religions are not about how to make someone else live the life you think everyone should live. Religion is, in most cases, a way to make your own peace with your creator. Of course, Atheists are exempt from this scenario, but most religions exist to 1) glorify their God, 2) have an established set of moral ideals that are pursued on an individual basis and 3) do good works based on that deity relationship. We are always going to have certain sects take a left turn at the exit and make all other members of that faith cringe with embarrassment. If you want to change the world, be an attractive example. Be like the light that attracts moths, or

Letter Rip from page 2 like the magnet that attracts steel. Personally, I don’t give Woodsboro, ISIS, al Queda or any other fringe element the time of my day. I have better things to do, like try and inspire others to be great. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, ad nauseum, have the natural right to thrive in their environment without having to fear that another religion is trying to snuff them out of existence and memory. Didn’t the Holocaust (and most of history) teach us all about what happens to those who try such things? Did Charlie Hebro cross the line? I don’t know. I didn’t buy a copy of their magazine. I don’t read or speak much French. I admit though, from my experience, that commercial satire is generally targeted toward politicians, religions, relationships, and life in general. Thanks to Monty Python’s continued television presence, no one is immune from being targeted from satire (or even the threat of violence), including publishers. Let’s agree to get along. No religion is going to thrive if one keeps killing off those that don’t agree with it. The Romans tried killing off Christians in the first couple of centuries of the Christian era and the result was more people becoming Christians. The same could be said about any country trying to snuff out a religion (I’m looking at you North Korea, China and Iran). People who are willing to die for what they believe in is something worth looking into. As for me, my Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Christian friends… and yes a handful of Atheists agree that we should live and let live. Let’s let our own lights shine, agree to disagree and move on, together. This is probably the best policy.

Who would have thought that the best restaurant in the metro north would be hidden in a rock wall climbing place. (I had to look it up!) On the advice of Nick and the Public News, I’m going to check it out. Daniel F.

Ken, I think you are doing an outstanding job putting this paper together every week. Remember small efforts in the direction of your goal will eventually lead you to that end. Help will come, just keep your chin up and continue to work smart and network well. Jim M.

WILLIS CAMERAS I got pretty angry reading about the city council’s blatant disregard for public thoughts regarding the traffic camera issue. I live in Conroe and the cameras here have go to go as well. Thanks to Kelli Cook for raising awareness of this issue. Craig G.

BEST OF 2014 Wow, what a great read! Loved the article about Nick Rama and the Foodie group. He’s amazing and I bet he is friends with all the local restaurant owners in town. Well done. Gina G. ***

I downloaded the latest issue and this one was by far the best one. I was curious as to how the Public News could have covered enough territory to actually put together a best of 2014 in dining. I now know that it was Nick Rama and his work in the field that made this possible. I agree with most of his assessments and still need to check out the ones on the best of list that I was not aware of. And I thought I

I hate this “new” Public News. So do my friends. It was a great paper back in the 90s and now, since the name was taken, this new publisher has run it to the ground. I’ve been watching, so I know! I plan on calling you until you quit publishing this. I’m going to start harassing your advertisers too. You don’t deserve to be called the Public News. I’m surprised that anyone reads it. icaid and Medicare (Parts A,B,C, and D) are wrought with waste and abuse. Many would also argue they have caused much of the skyrocketing healthcare costs, and state and federal deficits. It is clearly the most expensive in the world and not even close to being the best anymore. Clearly discussion is demanded. Now, imagine eliminating both and the ACA. Even with threats of taxes/fines, or even jail for not paying them, we still are looking at 13% of the 320+ million Americans being uninsured (around 42 million). So much for “Universal Coverage”. Should the SCOTUS or Congress strike down the ACA, why not do something RADICAL to avert the oncoming trainwreck? Historically out-of-control federal spending has made other countries declare bankruptcy like Argentina recently and Germany under the Weimar Republic and even this country back in the 1930’s. A “new” payroll tax replacing the Medicare tax of about double and returned to the states collected, it could fund exchanges with market-driven options which require inclusion of pre-existent conditions, regardless of age. The current levels of Medicaid funding also would be returned to each state (for those qualifying) eliminating future increases. This eliminates a massive bureaucracy of tens of thousands of federal workers operating both programs and charged with collecting owed fines. Small businesses, large businesses, the unemployed, and even the self-employed would be freed of the burdensome behemoth that has become health insurance. Premium costs would vary according to plans like HMO’s with deductibles, co-pays, and out-of-pocket costs. I would enjoy hearing responses or objections to a less socialistic health insurance program.

“troublewithwords” An exhibition featuring new works by Jamie Ellen Davis On view January 30, 2015 - March 13, 2015 Opening reception: January 30, 2015, 6pm Houston, TX - Fresh Arts presents troublewithwords, a solo exhibition of new work by local artist Jamie Ellen Davis. troublewithwords is a collection of simple, organic drawings, prints, and work drawn directly on the gallery walls that collectively create an autobiographical narrative of the artist and how her severe learning disabilities have influenced her work. The result? An engaging, self-exploratory and self-revelatory exhibition that invites the viewer into a world where words, in their distortion, become objects to be both seen and read. The public is invited to a free opening reception with the artists beginning at 6 p.m., on Friday, January 30 at Fresh Arts, 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston, TX, 77007. Free parking is available. Davis says of troublewithwords, “It’s neither purely visual nor purely textual. Instead the work employs text as an aesthetic rather than semantic material. It shifts the verbal to the visual and by doing so changes the primary ways in which we process and produce information. This investigation of language-as filtered through the lens of cognitive disability-shows lines to have meaning and words to take shape, both literally and figuratively. The work must be seen and read, not as two separate acts, but as one.”

My friend and I sit at the Bistro of the Menil. I look at the windows that define the corner of the room they bring to mind the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He hated the dark corners, he was all about putting windows in corners. It’s a matter of craftsmanship and technology and imagination. How do those come together? My friend and I talk. I am enthralled with the Kentridge animations in the Ghandi Exhibit. I love drawing. I love drawing, This is drawing and movement and story- (aka loose narrative) and a recording of social protest (Apartheid), plus invoking us all to protest. My friend protests: I’m offended. Why the name of a Jew as the bad guy! But the name of a Jew was the good guy! Layers of sound (Kentridge calls it a membrane of sound), layers of story and layers of drawing. The first time I saw it, for me it was about the drawing, the second time I visited it was about the movement and this time about the politics, Thank you, Russian Constructivism. Kentridge, who declares that he is influenced by Modernism and Russian Constructionism. Ah! Russian Constructionism, either you haven’t heard of it or you bought two books about it last year alone. This is what I thought then, first came the German Expressionist, then the Russian Constructivists, and then

came Frank. And this rearrangement is the new wrinkle in my brain—the American, our guy, Frank brought it all. First was the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright: Creativity, with a base in Craftsmanship (the Roycroft art and craft movement), then embracing the technology—those fatal but lovable steel I-beams (his houses were a giveaway if anyone would refurbish them after the steel rusted)… and his Imagination- his GENIUS went international…but oh for the fatal flaw of the darned ole personal life. Shall I tell you or have I encouraged you to look it up at this point? His genius spread, he influenced the Bauhaus, whose motto was, “form follows function. The word got around to the Germans the French and then the Russian constructivists. The ones who have left echos in my head : “there are two pure abstractions, music (sound) and architecture.” So here we are sitting outside the exhibit and finding Frank in the corner of the bistro. I encourage you all to go to this exhibit and see the Kentridge animations and appreciate this exhibit that goes across cultures and timelines to see hopes of non-violence and peace as well as the Menil Collection for how it has turned Houston into a world class art palace.

#HASHTAGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA WHAT ARE THEY FOR AND WHAT DO THEY DO? We’ve all heard of #hashtags and see them in most forms of media these days, but what exactly is a hashtag, and how do you use them? Let’s take a look at what hashtags are, how they came about in social media and the best ways to utilize them. What is a #Hashtag? What is a hashtag? A hashtag is a word or string of words preceded by the pound symbol, such as #PublicNews. Hashtags are used to categorize posts by topics or themes, follow and track trending topics, and make your posts discoverable to other users through search. Hashtags are the best way to add a specific keyword to your posts. Twitter may have Jeb Kicker popularized the hashtag, but they’ve been around for much longer than our modern social media. Hashtags were first used in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) in 1988 in much the same way they’re used now: to categorize content. Over a year after Twitter launched, Chris Messina introduced the hashtag in an August 2007 tweet. Shortly thereafter, Twitter officially adopted the hashtag and introduced “Trending Topics” to show the top hashtags being used on the platform. Since Twitter started using the hashtag, all of the most popular social media platforms have followed suit. Today, you can use a hashtag on Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, YouTube, Facebook and more, with varying degrees of effectiveness. Twitter remains the most popular hashtagging platform. #BestPractices For starters, hashtags do not recognize spaces and punctuation marks, so when you post

#New Orleans or #Don’tTextandDrive, only the letters before the space or apostrophe will be linked. It’s best to keep hashtags short, limited to a couple words or about 10 characters. Why? #subscribetopublicnewsonline isn’t very easy to read and will often not be read at all. Furthermore, when using more than one word in a single hashtag, capitalizing the first letter of each word makes the hashtag much easier to read (i.e. #PublicNewsReaders). Simply by using a hashtag, your tweet will see twice as much engagement (favorites, retweets, comments) than tweets without hashtags. That being said, don’t open your Twitter app to rattle off a tweet containing a #hashtag #for #every #word. The sweet spot for using hashtags across all social platforms is two to three per post. Using more than three hashtags in a post simply clutters the post, making it tough to read and misses the point of hashtags: using keywords to group your posts. You also want to be specific with your hashtags. For example, if I wanted to use a hashtag for this article, I’d use #HashtagTips rather than #Hashtags. By being specific, users won’t be bombarded with off-topic content when they search for your hashtag. Finally, use a hashtag that’s original and memorable. By using a catchy phrase or even a made-up word, your hashtag is much more likely to gain traction within the social networks. By following these simple steps, you can utilize the #hashtag effectively and make a better experience for yourself and your followers on social media. GIG GUIDE

A Short History of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Leading to their Best Album: Cosmo’s Factory by Mark Crampton Creedence Clearwater Revival was the first of the so-called ‘Southern Rock’ or ‘Swamp Rock’ bands, with their musical images of riverboats, bayous and the South, despite all four members being San Francisco Bay Area natives! CCR began as so many other bands have, a local club band working through several incarnations and name changes. Original members John Fogerty (guitar and vocals), Stu Cook (piano) and Doug Clifford (drums) teamed up in 1959, calling themselves ‘The Blue Velvets’, and often played back-up for Johns’ older brother and singer Tom Fogerty in area clubs. Tom officially joined the band in 1964, and they signed a contract with Fantasy Records, who changed the bands’ name to ‘The Golliwogs’ for their first recording, to capitalize on the British band invasion. In 1966 John and Doug were drafted into the military, both serving in local Reserve units until 1968. The Golliwogs continued to practice and play locally, but could not tour. During these early years, major evolutions within the band also occurred. Tom switched

from lead vocals to rhythm guitar; Stu switched from piano to bass guitar, and John became lead vocals and the band’s songwriter. Fantasy Records changed ownership in 1967, and the band again changed names in 1968, to Creedence Clearwater Revival. (The name derived from two ideas; that many bands emerging onto the music scene then had long esoteric names and combining a play on the name of a friend of Tom’s, Olympia ‘Clear Waters’ Beer, and their personal commitments to the band). In 1968, with their name change and renewed commitment to the band, all four members of CCR concentrated on being full-time musicians, releasing their first, selftitled album in July, going from there to national and international success, touring and recording. CCR were actually the first band to be signed for The Woodstock Music and Arts Fair (August 1969); until they signed, no other national-level musical group was willing to commit to the festival. Despite this, their performance was not included on either the original Woodstock

PATSY’S: AUTHENTIC WOOD FIRED PIZZA AND GREAT FOOD IN TOMBALL by Nick “Spring Foodie” Rama photos by John Wade

Patsy’s began as a 1940’s mechanic shop/ service station that has since been turned in to a quaint restaurant serving an eclectic menu of sandwiches, pasta, salads, homemade soups and coffee, along with southern comfort food and made-from-scratch desserts. Breakfast is served from 8am-11am and lunch is served 11am- 4:30pm; currently there is no dinner service. The true star of Patsy’s is their woodfired Pizza, fire baked with oak wood in a brick oven imported from Milan, Italy. Patsy’s pizza is the best kept secret in Tomball, TX. Patsy’s got it’s start as a place called “South Nick Rama Texas Coffee”, serving coffee, biscotti, cold sandwiches and desserts. Patsy’s was named after the original owner who eventually sold it to the current owners; her son and daughterin-law Curtis & Tracey Morris three years ago. Daughter Rene and Curtis’s Mother Patsy all contribute to making the restaurant a success. In the earlier years even their sons Curtis Jr. & Chris helped to make it a success. Curtis Sr., who has been in the restaurant business for over 20 years, handles the operations. Patsy’s used to have a little sign with removable letters to let you know where they are, but the City of Tomball made them take it down. If you blink you just might miss it; they are located at the corner of 425 W Main St. and S. Pine St. I had a chance to sit down with Tracey and

ask her some questions about Patsy’s: Nick: What inspired you to add Wood Fired Pizzas to the menu? Tracey: We thought it would offer more of a variety to our customers and, down the road, give us the possibility of having future menu items cooked or finished off in the oven. We are testing some new menu items that will, hopefully, be coming soon. Nick: Why did you choose to get a wood fired pizza oven imported in from Milan? Tracey: My husband was in the restaurant industry for many years and he knew the owner of Antoine’s, who did a great deal of import/ export. We wanted this oven because of the quality and the fact that this oven is totally wood fired. We did not want a gas start oven because that changes the flavor of the pizza. Wood gives the pizza a better, more authentic taste. We also use a five-cheese blend on our pizza (two kinds of Mozzarella, Provolone, Parmesan and Romano). My son Curtis created our recipe for the pizza dough, which is made from scratch daily, and our house-made sauce uses a blend of fresh herbs and the highest quality tomatoes. Nick: How does your food reflect you and your family? Tracey: Well, many of our recipes have been in our family for many generations, but there are many new innovations also. The chicken salad recipe had been handed down and has not been changed in two generations. The quality of the food is a reflection of us, and is an act of love. My mother-in-law, husband and kids work here or have previously worked here. We put our love, sweat and tears into this restaurant every day. We would never serve anything we would not eat ourselves, which is why everything is made to order and cooked from scratch. Nick: What inspired you to become a restaurant owner? photo by John Wade

From Nick’s on page 9 Tracey: Baking was my forte, and my husband used to do restaurant startups. We had a chef friend who helped us move forward with the concept. He and my husband developed the menu for Patsy’s (named after my motherin-law). A lot of the more recent aspects (especially during the first years), have been brought to fruition by my son Curtis. Each family member has their strong suit in different positions of the restaurant, which makes it work well. Nick: What are your and the staff’s favorite pizzas? Tracey: BBQ Chicken with Jalapenos is mine. Curtis, Jr. loves the Mediterranean Veggie (with Chicken added), and my husband’s favorite is the Meat (with Jalapenos added). Nick: Besides Pizza, if you had to eat one food everyday on the Patsy’s menu, what would it be and why? Tracey: Fish Tacos, because they come two ways, grilled or fried, and would be light enough to eat daily. Nick: What are the most popular menu items at Patsy’s? Tracey: Besides the wood fired pizzas, the Fiesta Tilapia, Pesto Shrimp Pasta and our homemade Tomato Basil Soup, which is featured daily. That soup has a huge following with our regular customers. The Frips (thick fried potato chips) are pretty popular here. Also, our pies are a big hit for dessert. Nick: Since baking is your forte, what is your signature dessert at Patsy’s? Tracey: My Coconut Cream Pie. It is hard to keep it in the case and we often sell out. Also, the Fudge Covered Brownie. All our pies and dessert are made from scratch. Nick: What would you want to tell somebody about Patsy’s if they have never been here? Tracey: This is a place where people feel comfortable; the customers are an extension of our family. We love when our customers give us

feedback. Our business is all done by word of mouth, and we have never done any advertising. Also, that we have an open kitchen so we obviously have nothing to hide.

Nick: What do you and your husband have planned for Patsy’s future? Tracey: We are eventually going to build out toward the street. Currently we can seat about 30-32 people, but after expanding we will be

able to seat 90+. We will keep the original building and garage doors from the service station, because, amazingly, we still have customers that worked or were patrons of the original shop from the 40’s. Nick: I heard you all opened a new restaurant, tell me a little bit about it? Tracey: Yes, we also just opened a new restaurant in mid-October of last year called the Hedgehog Grill in Waller, TX. We have a great chef, Loren Solis. Texas beer and wines, great speciality burgers, flat iron steaks, chicken fried steaks to name a few dishes. Nick: What five words describes Patsy’s? Tracey: Quality, Family Atmosphere, Southern Charm, Hometown & Eclectic.

NEW THIS WEEK

Nick: I have had your coffee; what sets yours apart from the national chains? Tracey: I buy our beans green and roast them in house at least every two days so as to keep them fresh. I drive to the Port to pick up the coffee that is shipped directly from the farmers. We use different blends and varieties, but only the best beans are used. Our coffee isn’t meant to compete with the national chains, but we offer the best gourmet coffee at a comparable price to our patrons.

COPS? COPS? YOU SAID COPS! WHERE? by Chrisine Alvarez

Aries-(Mar. 21- April 20)- Aries, this was never meant to be your week. Remember the guy who was hitting on your girl at the bar the other night. Yeah the guy with the tribal tats on his biceps that you threatened. Well, he’s the cop pulling you over this weekend. You better hope that he has a bad memory.

Never the less, I-45 Diner is alive, kicking, beating the hardest of odds and 5 ATE CAFE making dozens, if not hundreds, of new fans. PUBLIC NEWS

Taurus-(Apr. 21- May 21)- Taurus, you’ve seen the tile on the bathroom floor around the commode at your friends house. You were pretty trashed and didn’t care. Wake up buttercup, this isn’t your friends house and that’s not tile... it’s concrete. You are in the holding cell at the Montgomery County Sheriffs Department and that toilet hasn’t been cleaned for weeks. Gemini-(May 22-June 21)- Are you coming or going this week Gemini? Someone needs to know if you should be locked up or sent up; as in institutionalized. Acting crazy won’t help this time and that lady cop didn’t buy your “I’ll buy you a drink sometime, sweetheart” move. Are those cuffs too tight? Cancer-(June 22-July 22)- You seem to be the only sign this week with a good outlook dealing with the police. If only it was a real girl that you met at the club last night and not a guy with gender identity honesty issues. Oh yeah, he is a cop. Leo-(July 23-Aug 22)- Leo, that “friend” of yours, who pulled you into that “new business opportunity”, was nothing more than a drug runner. Now that you need one, no cop can be found. You’ll soon discover what it means to have a bad day when you are targeted as a liability by a member of the drug cartel. Virgo-(Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)- Virgo, saving the world is going to take more than ideas and dreams. Like actually going to work on them. You failed your gun test so that job with the local police just went bye-bye. You also need to start exercising, quit drinking soda and drop the tobacco. Who wants to

partner with an out-of-shape cop anyway? Libra-(Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)- Libra, it’s never a good sign when your new girl or guy ended a relationship with a cop before hooking up with you. Her/His ex goes by Chris and Chris has a hard time with break ups. It might be the stars, but you might want to update and increase your life insurance payout. Scorpio-(Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)- Scorpio, put down the books, turn off the television and go back to bed. There isn’t much more to say other than that. It’ll be a long six months until you get your driving license back... and your car. Sagittarius- (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21)- Sagittarius, do you remember how fun it was to outrun the police when you were younger? Your car was faster then theirs. Your driving instincts were better than theirs. Unfortunately today the thing you forgot was to put gas in your car. Hope these cops have short memories or you’re in for a long visit somewhere unpleasant. Capricorn-(Dec 22.- Jan. 20)- Capricorn, your dad was a cop, your mom was a cop, both your brother and sister were cops. So, why did you decide to be a dancer? Even more so, how did you not know, by your long life experience, that the guy asking if you give “happy endings” wasn’t a cop? Aquarius-(Jan. 21 -Feb. 19)- Aquarius, you’ve always been proud to say that you can hold your liquor. Even when dared, you never backed down. Even your driving skills can fool the most blindest of cops. But never, I repeat, never dare a cop to go first when they tell you to repeat the alphabet backwards. Pisces-(Feb. 20-Mar. 20)- Pisces, you have a long tradition of being able to get along with the police. You are polite, you never disobey an order from a cop. So why is it only now, when a policeman tells you to put your clothes back on, that you refuse?

CCR continued from page 8 album or in the film; John Fogerty withheld the rights because he didn’t like the quality of their recordings. CCR had followed The Grateful Dead on stage at 3:00 am, and John said they had put the crowd to sleep. Cosmo’s Factory was CCR’s fifth album. It’s release came at the end of a grueling non-stop rehearsal/recording period after a whirl-wind European concert tour in April 1970 (one of the major factors in the band’s eventual breakup). In fact, the album’s very name comes from the fact that drummer Doug “Cosmo” Clifford likened the rehearsal/recording studio to a factory. At that time, the recording industry was more concentrated towards 3-minute long single & B-side releases for radio play, with albums mostly being combinations of hit singles. Cosmo’s Factory included four previously released single/B-sides: “Travelin’ Band” & “Who’ll Stop the Rain”; “Up Around the Bend” & “Run Through the Jungle”; along with “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” & “Long As I Can See the Light” another single/B side which was co-released the same time as the album. The “Travelin’ Band” track on the album is not the one they actually recorded in these sessions, but an earlier recording that featured horns mixed into John’s vocals. The 11 minute-plus cover of Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” was originally not planned to be on the album, it was an unrehearsed jam session; but many consider it to actually be the best track! This track was too long for radio play at that time, but was re-edited and released as a single in 1976, to ho-hum results. However, it later gained commercial success in several TV commercials! CCR began breaking up after Cosmo’s Factory was released, with Tom exiting the band in December 1970 during the recording sessions

of their sixth album, and it was the last album that featured the full line-up of the original band. It’s fair to say that both fans and critics (including Rolling Stone, and me) consider Cosmo’s Factory to be CCR’s best recording. Indeed, it was the best selling of the band’s seven albums. I still have my copy of Cosmo’s Factory, in original 33 1/3rd vinyl, safely in my album collection.

Creedence Clearwater Revival Albums Every Music Lover Should Own Cosmo’s Factory This is probably the only CCR album any casual fan would want. It’s got a handful of hits and great deep tracks Willie & The Poor Boys If you want more than Cosmo’s then we suggest picking up this album along with...

Chronicle Vol. 1 ...this one. Along with Willies you get most of the Cosmo’s tracks as well as all the hits that show up on all the other CCR albums.
