HOW DIGITAL CHANGES PN THE WORLD VOL 1, ED 3 | NOVEMBER 20 - 26, 2014 | FREE

PUBLIC NEWS www.publicnewsonline.com

FIRST IT WAS MAIL, THEN VINYL ALBUMS, NOW BOOKS, MAGAZINES & NEWSPAPERS Change is good, in some cases. In certain cases, change is necessary. When the Public News went on hiatus after our second print issue, it was to look for a better quality printer. We found one. They worked with us getting ready to launch a new look publication. That was before that fateful Sunday afternoon at a certain local coffee joint nursing a series of dark roast coffee refills and reading a stack of backlogged Wall Street Journals. In my reading I Ken Petty learned that young consumers are easily adapting to reading their media on digital devices. Books and magazines for the Kindle (or Nook) and even some newspapers are being downloaded and read by these faithful consumers of information. Websites have become passe’, just a place holder so that the young consumer can find their next media fix; easily, quickly and hassel-free. So, I’m very happy to hear that many have adapted AND adopted the digital Public News e-newspaper (in fact, I’m really not sure what to call it) for their own. Here is the skinny on something many have discovered when they get their subscription email for the latest issue. You need to have a PDF reader on your device.

R & L BOOKS

MAILBAG

Adobe Reader is a great choice for those using Microsoft-based and Android-based devices. PDF Reader X is a top choice for those of our readers who use an Apple iPad, iPod or iPhone to view their Public News. Evince or Okular are excellent PDF readers for those of our readers who prefer to run their devices on Linux-based devices. If you have any issues, please feel free to contact us and we will be more than glad to help. CORRECTION AND APOLOGY In our second issue, I did a blurb on the bubble boy David Vetter and I misspelled his last name. I regret the error. HANDS UP, DON’T SHOOT The St. Louis football Rams are an embarrassment and that little display of support for the teenager that was shot trying to rush an officer like a lineman on a quarterback makes about as much sense as Bono (U2’s lead singer) talking about forgiving third world debt. For goodness sake guys, play football. You need to focus on that since you are in last place in your division... or, wait a minute, maybe that was your attempt to tell your fans that you guys have given up on your season. Either way, you need to do your job and play football through the end of the season. ANDY SINGER IS IN THE HOUSE I’m grateful that the Public News has acquired the artistry and wit of Andy Singer to grace the pages of the Public News. Singer covers a range of topics from political to social commentary and everything in between. The best thing I love about this guy is his tenacity to push for you’all to think about things you would normally not think about, or want to think about. Singer’s website is at www.andysinger.com. Visit it often and drop him an email welcoming him to the Public News family. SPEAKING OF FAMILY I encourage all my readers to go to our webpage and subscribe to get the weekly email that contains the download link to the latest issue of the Public News. Until next time.

PUBLIC NEWS GOES DIGITAL

It’s official, the Public News has ditched print and gone digital! The economies of scale dictated that in order for the Public News to succeed in the marketplace and reach our intended audience, we needed to think ahead by taking in consideration the changes in recent trends and market conditions to embrace the digital medium. What does this mean? Why not just do a website? Why a paper you can download? We’re actually doing both. First and foremost, the Public News is a newspaper. Our readers depend on a trusted source of information that only a newspaper can deliver. On the other side, our website reflects what we write about and to what drives our passions. The only difference in the newspaper is the medium on which the information is delivered. A digital paper is just like a e-book, easy to get, easy to read and easy to share. For those of you who loved the print version, what does this mean for you? It means never missing an issue because you can’t get to a copy on time, or find one before they have all been taken at any one location. This paper is not limited in its availability nor in its location. You can simply subscribe (it’s free to do and that’s how we attract the best advertisers), and every Thursday you will get an email with a link to download the latest paper online. Only our subscribers will get the download link on Thursday morning. By the weekend, the digital paper will be up on the website for anyone, anywhere to download. So, if someone was driving or flying in to Houston and wanted to make plans to see a show, a concert, check out a restaurant, everything they would need, would be available by Friday afternoon on the website for them. Our hope is that the Public News will blaze a trail that many have already chosen over the last few years to take in order to stay in business My hope for you is that you enjoy our efforts.

Hey there Public News, Looking good after your hiatus. I’m not sure about the decision to go digital, but your reasoning is pretty sound. I’ll adjust. The article about the Beatles is pretty good and nice shout out to those podcasts that you showcased. I downloaded a couple and you are correct, they are keepers. Pretty nice stroke, putting the Beatles on the cover of your digital paper. Who doesn’t like the Beatles? The only other national music figure that might have had a similar impact would have been putting Frank Zappa on the cover. Randy E. *****

Wow, this ain’t my grandpa’s Public News. You should have started your own paper with your own name. I used to work for the old Public News back in the day before it folded. Ed. - Exactly why we bought the rights to the name. It’s a great name for a paper! (by the way try to spin this on the Houston Press who also took the name of an old newspaper) *****

Thank you for putting out a paper that focuses on the north metro side of Houston. We only have one paper and it’s just full of full page ads and barely any writing. Now I can just download the latest issue when I get the subscriber email. I’ve shown a few of my friends your paper on my Galaxy. They wanted to get a copy as well. Good luck and let me know if you need any help! Jeri R.

CONROE – Flight Lone Star CollegeMontgomery departed from the Lone Star Executive Airport in Conroe last month, bound for Nashua, New Hampshire. The passengers? Twenty-six dogs, whose lives were rescued due to the generosity of the faculty, staff and students at Lone Star College-Montgomery. Collectively, they raised over $3,800 to remove these animals from area shelters and transport them to happy owners across the country. At-risk dogs are rescued by Operation Pets Alive, an all-volunteer organization in Montgomery County. They are fostered in homes, but donations are needed for the

dogs to be transported. In appreciation for hard work of the faculty, staff and students, Operation Pets Alive named the flight after the college. “It would be an understatement to say our local shelters are over-crowded,” said Kevin Sumrall, professor of psychology at LSCMontgomery, and coordinator of the fundraising campaign. “Many shelters in the northern states are in need of adoptable dogs. Our hope is that what we’ve done here can serve as a model and other sponsors will step up to finance these flights.”

SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL REWARDED FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Receives $7,642 Incentive from Entergy Texas’ Commercial Solutions Program Conroe, Texas — Sacred Heart Catholic Church recently received a $7,642 cash incentive from the Entergy Texas Commercial Solutions Program for a lighting retrofit in the parish and school buildings. The Commercial Solutions Program helps organizations save energy and money by providing no-cost facility improvement recommendations and financial incentives based on energy savings. The church and school’s Commercial Solutions Program success comes at a time

when it is making extensive improvements to its facilities and adding 9,600 square footage of new space to its campus. These improvements include the addition of a 2,000 square foot cafeteria kitchen and other renovations to its auditorium, new fencing around the school, improved signage, additional parking and two new buildings. The new buildings include a 5,600 square foot St. Vincent DePaul Society and a 2,000 square foot maintenance office and storage building. Parish Administrator Eileen Borski said,

Peter Huntsman (left), president and CEO of Huntsman, stopped by The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion to see the new logo installed above the stage house. The Pavilion and Huntsman have entered into a five year multi-million dollar sponsorship that provides for additional funding for The Pavilion’s performing arts events and educational outreach programs. Pictured with Huntsman is Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion.

“The program staff’s technical expertise guided us throughout the process, ensuring that we achieved maximum energy savings and fully functioning equipment allowing us to be good stewards of the finances at Sacred Heart parish and school. Sacred Heart looks forward to future opportunities to turn to the Commercial Solutions Program to increase our energy-efficiency in our existing buildings and as Sacred Heart moves forward with our Master Plan.” The high efficiency lighting will save 133,209 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, equal to eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions from 10,536 gallons of gasoline, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations. “We’re proud to serve as an energy-efficient role model in the community,” Borski said. “We identified a real need for an energy efficiency program that specifically targets our commercial customers, especially as budgets are spread thin,” said Entergy Texas Customer Service Representative Tracey Brodeur. “This program is an organized effort to bring needed energy efficiency to Texas.” Since 1898, Sacred Heart Catholic Church has been serving Montgomery County while watching the area grow and change from generation to generation. The parish continues to grow and now serves more than 6,500 families with approximately 70 active ministries, over 1,000 students in religious education and approximately

SECRET SANDWICH OPENS AT FRESH ARTS How do you bring together six talented artists working independently under a common theme for a group show? The answer: make it fun. Fresh Arts presents “Secret Sandwich”, a multimedia exhibition of new work from artists Monica Foote, Jonathan Jardin, Paris Jomadiao, Geoff Smith, Alyssa Stephens, and Alonso Tapia. In 2013 the local collaborative combined forces to create and distribute the limited edition zine, Cat Juice. In this first full-scale exhibition, they will turn their attention to dissecting an All-American lunchtime favorite. Using video projection, large-scale soft sculpture, fabric art, cut paper collage, graphic design, painting, and done in the collective’s distinctive tongue-in-cheek style of art making, “Secret Sandwich” will cut, layer and serve the results of their unique collaborative process in the Fresh Arts gallery. The public is invited to a free opening reception with the artists beginning at 6 p.m., on Friday, December 5 at Fresh Arts, 2101 Winter Street, Studio B11, Houston, TX, 77007. Free parking is available. “The element of play is a big part of our process. Once it stops being fun we don’t want to do it anymore” the artists agreed. “We were all wanting to do something to make us create and socialize, and we wanted to pursue opportunities that might be overwhelming to a single person but are feasible for the group.” At its simplest, the sandwich is casual nourishment; on a more abstract level, the sandwich-asform is layers of complementary materials bound between two substrates. Similarly, “Secret Sandwich” can be read on the surface as a fun show of fun work by fun-loving people, or a thoughtful mix of complementary work bound together by a common desire to socialize,

THE UNBREAKABLE JONESES be a pretty sight when I take my first stride as a sprinter. Introductions are made and I try to limber up for my first run since the 90s. Andrew Jones looks me straight in the eyes and lets me know that he won’t give me any mouth-tomouth resuscitation if I collapse on the course. Then he laughs and shakes my shoulder with a good-natured wink. “No offense, we like to have fun around here,” he says. Andrew and the other “Unbreakable Joneses,” his wife Stephanie and their children Eston, Caymin and Madison, are widely known in the high adrenaline world of competitive obstacle racing. Closer to home, the Jones have been opening their doors to help others get fit since 2012. The boot camp-style exercise circuits - which cover everything from pull ups, scaling walls, rope climbing, sledge hammer slinging and sand bag toting - is what sets the Jones apart from so many other fitness-driven athletes. The Jones welcome new additions to their groups. And they are doing it for free. “We started the circuits to train as a family for our competitive races,” says Andrew Jones. As more people came to their work outs, the circuits evolved over the years. “The (exercise) circuits have grown and the people who come here now are like family. It is an atmosphere where people are encouraging each other,” says Andrew Jones. When I first heard about the Jones, I was a statistic. crisis. The US obesity problem is costing the economy over $100 billion a year, according to the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity. The Jones family open-door policy represents a homegrown grassroots trend in fitness that may just help reverse. The various circuits the Jones have designed cover everything from sprinting, to tire rolling, burpees, plank-style holds and rope climbing. “They are aimed at strengthening the core areas of the body and give you stamina,” explains Eston Jones. The weekly work out circuits are not just about ‘no pain - no gain.’ The Jones try to instill an overarching sense of community. “We have fun, but we want you to beat your own obstacles,” says Edson Jones. The father and son Jone duo also compete in races as “Thing 1” and “Thing 2.” In the US, the gym, health and fitness club industry tops the $21.8 billion, based statistics from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. For those eager to slim down and get in shape, but worried about the price-tag of a personal trainer or gym membership, the biggest cost in joining the Jones on any given Tuesday or Thursday evening will be time. “We won’t take a penny. We just offer people to come and join us,” says Andrew Jones. The typical circuit begins at 5:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There have been as many as 50 people to attend the circuits. Each member of the Unbreakable Jones either leads smaller groups or helps to coach newcomers. “We want to make you healthier for life,” says Andrew Jones. “That’s why we design the circuits this way.” Don’t be fooled by the easy-going nature of Jones daughters Caymin and Madison. The girls can hoist the 100 pound-plus cement bucket as easy as pulling a pale of water from a well. When asked what homeschooled Caymin like the best about the circuit, she jokes: “Beating the boys.” The Unbreakable Jones can be found on Facebook and YouTube channel.

THE RED ELVISES BLOW THROUGH HOUSTON ON THEIR WORLD TOUR

Limpoppo, fifteen albums as The Red Elvises, the Six-String Samauri soundtrack, and two concert videos, as well 2 music videos. One of The Red Elvises most popular albums, ‘I Wanna See You Bellydance’, was originally recorded in English in 1998, then re-recorded in Russian in 1999. I have both versions, and I like the Russian better! (Besides which, you should see peoples’ faces when they hear this album playing in the store! Yes, they ARE singing in Russian!) They also recorded the album ‘Rokenrol’ in Russian in 2002 - I am still looking for a copy of it to add to my collection. The Red Elvises have a few screen/TV credits. Besides ‘Six-Sting Samurai’, they also appeared on ‘Melrose Place’, ‘Beverly Hills 90210’, ‘Fast Lane’ , ‘Vh-1’, and ‘Penn & Teller’. They have done music scores for the movies ‘Jet-Lagged’, ‘Botched’, ‘Mail Order Bride’, ‘Project: Valkyrie’, ‘Heartbreakers’, and ‘Pitch’. The Red Elvises have always been based out of Venice, California, and spend at least 100 nights a year on tour. The Elvises last performed locally at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck here on October 31, 2014 - I have seen them there before, and they always put on quite a show! I can’t wait to see them come and play Houston again. The Red Elvises, also known as Igor and the Red Elvises, are currently on their 2014-2015 World Tour.

I was first introduced to The Red Elvises through the 1996 cult movie Six-String Samurai, a film I plan on reviewing for you in the future; they recorded the movie soundtrack, had a cameo appearance and credit for their appearance in the film. The soundtracks, as well as two music videos, were made based on the movie. Basically, The Red Elvlses play what they call “Siberian Surf-Rock” music (although they did stay into disco with one album. which actually wasn’t TOO bad, for disco!), with lead singer Igor Youzov and lead guitar Zhenya Kolykhanov doing pretty good young Elvises. When I first heard the band, they had emerged from their first incarnation as Russian Folk group ‘Limpoppo’ (winners on Star Search), and were billing themselves as “The Red Elvises - two guys from Moscow, a guy from Siberia, and a guy from Odessa (Texas)” The line-up at that time was Igor Yuzov, lead singer; Oleg Bernov, Russian Balalaika Bass; Zhenya Kolykhanov, lead guitar; and Avi Sills, drums. Over the years, the Red Elvises’ line-up and instrumentation has changed several times, yet the core remains Igor and Oleg; and despite their one disco album the band’s drive has remained rock-n-roll with a Russian twist. The Red Elvises self-produce all their CDs, so they retain artistic control and marketing, and thus far have recorded one album as

CASA DRAGONES IS COMING TO TEXAS Holiday gift ideas for those who already have everything: a limited amount of the special collector’s edition Casa Dragones Joven holiday gift sets remain at area retailers in Texas. These gift sets come with the option of having them personalized in hand calligraphy with recipient’s name. Casa Dragones Joven has also appeared on Oprah’s O List and Favorite Things twice in its five-year history. It has also been featured in Neiman Marcus’s

Christmas Book as a Fantasy Gift. Gift sets are available now at Pogo’s in Dallas and Spec’s in Austin, Houston, and Dallas. Casa Dragones is made with 100 percent pure blue agave, Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco addresses the market’s need for an ultra-premium smooth silver tequila, suitable for mixed drinks and cocktails, and maintains Casa Dragones’ unrivaled focus on elevating the tequila category through handcrafted, exceptionally pure, small-batch distilling. It was also chosen for Oprah’s Favorite Things List of 2014. Tequila is moving into the spotlight nationwide as more consumers choose it over other spirits for sipping and mixing. Tequila Casa Dragones Blanco Distinctions: The agaves for Casa Dragones Blanco are harvested 1,200 meters above sea level within the Eje Volcanico Transversal (Trans-Mexican Volcanic belt) in Tequila, Jalisco, one of the richest agricultural lands on earth. The dark, fertile volcanic soil, abundant with minerals such as potassium, phosphorus and silicium, produces the ideal agaves for the signature taste of Casa Dragones. The water used to produce Casa Dragones

Blanco is exceptionally pure spring water that originates from the Volcano of Tequila. As it travels from atop the Volcano into the 70-meter deep natural aquifers or underground wells, the water gathers essential minerals from the volcano’s rich soil. Casa Dragones goes one step further, extracting fresh water for each new batch and taking it through a proprietary process to deliver the perfect mineral balance for a refined, crisp tasting Blanco. Casa Dragones has tempting notes of vanilla, hazelnut, pear and citrus. Perfect for toasting and pairing with a variety of cheeses, chocolate, cigars, and other holiday classics, Casa Dragones is meant to be sipped and savored.

on those times when I am really blue and low on funds they should give me a free drink for my patronage. I have tried every excuse I can think off like: * I’m getting married tomorrow. * It’s my birthday * or, I just had to put down my dog this afternoon. What does it take just to get a bartender to give me one stinking free drink? - Really Thirsty Dear Thirsty: Try weeping and sobbing a lot. Talk really nasally and blow your nose constantly.
