Technology

RapidBend Turbo charge your press brake. Press brake optical protection doesn’t have to slow you down. Machines with embedded RapidBend technology utilise high speed progressive muting that enables the tools to close safely at high speed until the punch is only millimetres above the material. This reduces the slow speed travel distance on every cycle for both flat profile parts and box profile parts with side flanges. RapidBend technology is available in three performance levels - RapidBend, RapidBend Plus and RapidBend Ultimate to boost machine performance and significantly enhance your productivity.

RapidBend The entry level RapidBend option enables the press brake to close safely at high speed until the punch is just 6mm above the material. During approach to the pinch point, the machine travels at maximum closing speed with dynamic sensing enabled for various part profiles for uninterrupted closing and shorter deceleration to forming speed minimising the slow speed travel distance to the final 6mm above the pinch point.

RapidBend Plus Not fast enough? Upgrading to RapidBend Plus reduces the speed change point even further from 6mm down to just 2mm above the pinch point. RapidBend Plus saves valuable time and significantly enhances machine productivity, especially in high level production environments.

RapidBend Ultimate Why go slow when you can always go fast? RapidBend Ultimate eliminates slow speed altogether by enabling the tools to close at high speed right down to the pinch point for the ultimate in high speed performance. Press Brakes equipped with RapidBend technology provide users with higher levels of safety and performance that consistently outperform any other machines on the market. Only press brakes with embedded RapidBend technology can guarantee higher levels of performance so look for RapidBend, RapidBend Plus or RapidBend Ultimate when purchasing your next machine.

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

BendVision Real-time bending analysis - unlimited possibilities. What is BendVision? BendVision is an advanced high-speed image processing technology that provides real-time analysis of the bending process. The technology is incorporated into the existing hardware of the press brake optical guarding system so no extra components are required, resulting in an efficient and cost effective solution. What does BendVision do? BendVision processes images of the press brake tools and material during the bending process and transfers a range of information to the CNC via SmartLink, including raw and processed images, material bend velocity and live angle data. Press brakes equipped with BendVision can make use of this real-time data to provide users with a wide range of customised functions. BendVision for angle measurement BendVision technology provides a range of angle measurement data that includes the inside and outside angles of the material, average angle, material warp angle from machine deflection, material spring back angles for various material types, thickness and grain direction, plus end of relaxation angle once the bend has been completed. BendVision for angle control The ability for the CNC to receive BendVision angle data opens up a wide range of possibilities for real-time angle control. Instead of just confirming angles are within tolerance, the CNC can use the live angle plus a measured spring back angle to control the bending depth for flexible active and dynamic angle control solutions. Find out more The features and functions that are available with BendVision equipped press brakes will differ and are unique to each press brake make and model. Visit the Showroom pages and contact our Partners for more information and to learn how BendVision technology can improve your production efficiency, speed and accuracy.

Technology

BendShield Protecting your productivity, not just your operators. BendShield is a dynamic sensing technology that provides an advanced level of optical tool protection for press brake operators by enveloping the punch tip with a protective field that has no gaps while maintaining high speed operation. With an object detection resolution of 2mm, BendShield detects even the smallest obstruction from any angle. Press brakes with BendShield technology are not only the safest but also the most productive with guaranteed levels of safety and high-speed performance. Automatic Tool Alignment BendShield automatically scans the upper tool to determine the tool profile then dynamically adjusts the protective zone relative to the tool tip. Special Tools Detection BendShield also works with a variety of upper tool profiles from V shaped punches to radius and flattening tools. The optical technology adapts to the tool profile to provide an optimal level of protection for machine operators. Dynamic Sensing Technology BendShield adapts to accommodate various part profiles from flat parts to box shaped parts with single and double sides flanges as well as back-gauge fingers for short bend cycles. Multiple segments within the protective zone are automatically and dynamically blanked on each bending cycle to maintain high-speed machine operation with optimal protection and minimal interruptions. Advanced tool collision protection BendShield not only protects machine operators, but protects against high-speed tool collisions. If operators accidentally install or program an incorrect tool, BendShield protects your tooling investment by avoiding high-speed collisions that could lead to tool damage.

FlexSpeed Who said safer is slower? FlexSpeed safety control with high speed processing technology provides the platform for more efficient machine operation and superior performance. Traditional press brake designs employ a combination of hardware and software safety processing. This inefficient process slows down overall response and reaction times and when coupled with optical protection systems leads to a reduction in machine performance by forcing the machine to operate at reduced closing speed in order to improve stopping performance and increasing slow speed travel prior to bending. Machines with FlexSpeed technology operate with maximum efficiency and productivity with no restriction on operating speed or performance.

TECHNOLOGY PREVIEW -

Press brake foot pedals go wireless. For decades now, press brakes have been operated through foot pedals that are hardwired to the machine controls cabinet. While this is the standard method for a safe and reliable connection, foot pedal cables running across the floor tend to get in the way of machine operators, create potential tripping hazards and can make it difficult to move the pedal to a comfortable working position. All this is about to change with a ground-breaking wireless safety communications technology that enables press brake manufacturers to easily incorporate wireless functionality into their existing foot pedals. The new wireless safety communications technology employs a unique SIL3 communications process that provides remote input and output connections between a remote wireless device and the machine. Wireless foot pedals have several advantages over their wired counterparts in terms of improved ergonomics, reduced operator fatigue, eliminating down-time caused by damaged cables and removing tripping hazards for a safer work environment.

Flexibility to incorporate additional functions Wireless remote hardware is incorporated into the design of the foot pedal pendant and contains physical inputs for the foot pedal contacts. The wireless pedal is paired with a module on the press brake that is interfaced with the machine safety controller that processes the incoming foot pedal signals. The addition of remote wireless inputs in the foot pedal now gives press brake manufacturers the flexibility to incorporate additional functions to wireless foot pedal stations. While most wired pedals will include the same base functions such as the down and up pedal switches,

18

manufacturers are now incorporating other wireless controls including buttons for upper and lower tool clamping, an illuminated emergency stop button, machine reset, machine start and stop, plus more.

Extremely low power consumption A major breakthrough of the new wireless technology is its extremely low power consumption. The method in which the data is transmitted is one of the keys in significantly reducing power consumption and thus eliminating the need for a large battery and frequent recharging. In addition to the energy efficient design, an indoor solar cell is incorporated into the foot pedal pendant that uses ambient light to constantly charge and extend the life of the battery, providing up to 50% of the energy requirements.

Up to two months use from a single charge A single charge can power a wireless foot pedal for up to two months. Of course, press brake manufacturers can opt for larger capacity batteries to extend the time between manual recharges. When the foot pedal does need to be manually recharged, a USB charging port on the foot pedal pendant makes it relatively simple to plug the pedal into a charging port on

the machine or through a standard USB charger. The foot pedal can also be connected to the press brake via a quick connect cable for normal wired operation if necessary.

E-Paper display Also incorporated into the wireless pedal pendant is a 25mm x 65mm E-Paper display. This active display presents a range of useful information for the machine operator including the maximum wireless range and current distance from the machine, connection status, battery level, emergency stop status as well as the status of any optional auxiliary functions. Again, in keeping with the low-power design, the E-Paper display consumes very little energy, putting almost no additional load on the power system.

Support for multiple wireless pedals Foot pedals are paired with the machine module and press brakes can support multiple wireless pedals when two operators are required to handle the material during bending. Two foot pedals can be easily connected to a single machine and the number of active pedals is selected via the CNC. The pedal station number and active status are updated in real-time and displayed to the machine operator via the integrated E-Paper display. PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

Users can also take advantage of sharing foot pedals across multiple machines with the ability to pair them to the required machines for certain jobs. This means that fewer foot pedals would need to be purchased as they can be easily shared among multiple machines in a production facility. The paring process is simple and takes only a matter of seconds by pressing and holding the pairing buttons on the machine module and foot pedal until the two are connected.

dangerous if the pedal was taken into the back of the machine where the machine could be operated?”. While both are valid concerns, additional safety technologies have been developed to provide both range and line-of-sight monitoring that ensure the distance and location of the foot pedal is always within pre-defined safety limits before the machine can be operated.

Of course, there are a few situations that could arise that may be cause for concern with wireless technology. Questions such as “What if the foot pedal is removed and operated from a remote location?”, or “Wouldn’t it be

Range monitoring Range monitoring enables the press brake manufacturer to set a maximum operating distance for individual pedals used on each machine.

The range can be configured and set by the manufacturer, adding an extra level of safety by ensuring the machine can only be operated when the foot pedal is within a predetermined range. This eliminates the possibility of the machine being operated from a remote and potentially unsafe distance or location, that may otherwise put anyone within proximity of the machine at risk. Say if an operator was changing tools, or a worker was performing machine maintenance, they may be at risk of injury if another person attempted to cycle the machine from a remote location without their knowledge.

TECHNOLOGY PREVIEW Press brake foot pedals go wireless.

Wireless technology delivers greater freedom to position foot pedals.

20

Line-of-sight monitoring

Ergonomic design

The addition of line-of-sight monitoring technology also enhances the level of safety. Ultrasonic sensors are integrated into the wireless foot pedal pendant as well as into the lower frame of the press brake. The press brake manufacturer sets the position, angle and direction of the ultrasonic sensors to create an operating zone for any wireless pedals that are connected to the machine.

The need for good ergonomic design is becoming increasingly important for press brake operators. Spending several hours each day standing in front of a press brake and manually handling material puts a great deal of physical strain on an operator. This can lead to physical and mental fatigue which in itself can be dangerous as a loss of concentration could lead to an operator making a mistake that could cause them an injury. Press brake manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to improve machine design and operating techniques in order to alleviate the strain on workers. While reductions in operator fatigue and improvements in accident minimisation is beneficial to a worker’s wellbeing, better ergonomic design will also have the added benefit of improved productivity.

What this does is prevents the machine from being operated if the pedal breaks line of sight with the ultrasonic sensors on the machine. For example, the press brake cannot be operated if the pedal was moved to the rear of the machine or hidden behind a wall or screen.

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

Wireless technology now gives operators greater freedom to position the foot pedal anywhere across the front of the machine without the frustration of being tethered to a cable. This also helps with having the ability to easily set the pedal at a comfortable angle and especially beneficial when working with multiple tooling setups along the machine. With a wireless option, the operator can more easily move the pedal along the machine as they progress though each tooling station. Eliminating the foot pedal cable also frees up floor space so trolleys or carts used to transport and store material or completed parts can be positioned and moved around the press brake without restriction. Potential tripping hazards from cables lying across the floor are also eliminated, making for a safer and more efficient working environment.

pressbrakebuyersguide.com

Anyone that has ever experienced the inconvenience of a damaged foot pedal cable will know all too well the potential for significant machine downtime and lengthy production delays. Cable damage can be caused by heavy metal sheets being accidentally dropped or falling from the machine at the completion of a bend, striking and severing the pedal cable. While this may only damage the cable itself, in some cases a short circuited cable could potentially damage electronic components in the machine cabinet as well. In either case, any sort of cable damage causes major disruption to production until repairs are carried out and in some cases it could take several days before the machine is up and running again.

Improved ergonomic design, flexible functionality and improved productivity are just a few of the benefits that will be realised through wireless press brake foot pedal controls. Several leading press brake manufacturers including Salvagnini, LVD, ADIRA, Warcom, VICLA, STR, Schiavi and Vimercatti are already in the process of incorporating this new wireless technology. Look out for more information and details to be published on the Press Brake Buyer’s Guide website in the coming months. www.pressbrakebuyersguide.com

The new TruBend Series 7000:

Convenience & Speed Reloaded The new TruBend Series 7000 features machines with a higher press force of 50 tons – a first for this series. A new control system and ergonomic features are on board to facilitate handling. The TruBend Series 7000 bends small and medium parts extremely fast, just like its predecessor series. More than 2000 units have rolled off the production line at the TRUMPF plant in Pasching, Austria.

50 or 36 tons of press force The TruBend Series 7000 consists of two models: The TruBend 7036 has a press force of 36 tons and a bending length of 1020 millimeters. Its usable installation height is 295 millimeters. The TruBend 7050 is built for users who work with thicker sheets or manufacture larger parts. It bends with a press force of 50 tons. Its bending length is 1530 millimeters; its usable installation height comes to 385 millimeters.

Fast and precise

Focus on the operator

A six-axes backgauge helps the operator position components with remarkable precision. The gauge fingers move very fast, traveling 1500 millimeters per second along the X axis and 2200 millimeters per second along the Z axis. A bending line laser helps to properly align parts. This new generation of TruBend Series 7000 machines comes with the ACB Wireless angle measuring system. Little metal contact plates at the bottom of the sensor tools send a signal to the machine when they touch the sheet metal. The TruBend Series 7000 uses these signals to calculate the bending angle.

Bending is an exercise in convenience with the TruBend Series 7000. A new control panel simplifies programming on the shop floor. The streamlined views present just the essentials so users can quickly find the right screen for entering data. The operator does not need a mouse or keyboard to use the controller’s touchpad – even with work gloves on. The machine may be fitted with another screen alongside this panel on the press beam, for example, to display part diagrams. The operator has another quick-and-easy option for sending simple commands to the machine – the MobileControl module. This little control unit may be mounted on a rail above the tools. A sit-stand stool, a table to support the arms, a shelf for documents and a footrest keeps the operator comfortable and minimizes fatigue.

The TruBend 7036 and TruBend 7050 come with a right-hand cabinet to store tools right there on the machine.

Convenient tool handling An LED strip on the upper tool clamp indicates where the operator has to set up tools and where the next bend will be. The TruBend 7036 and TruBend 7050 come with a right-hand cabinet to store tools right there on the machine. Tools slide out on telescopic rails, so they are always ready to hand. The TruBend 7036’s cabinet offers 10.5 meters of space for tools. The TruBend 7050 can hold up to 15.1 meters worth of bending tools. It also contains a shelf that users can pull out to store things, for example, boxes for finished parts.

Small and compact These next-generation TruBend Series 7000 models are still small and compact. A roller gate is another space-saving feature. The TruBend 7036’s footprint is 3075 x 1292 millimeters; the TruBend 7050’s is 3553 x 1756 millimeters. Both machines can be hauled by forklift.

Interconnected Machines for 4.0 Production Process from A to Z Located in a metallurgical district particularly renowned for its specialization in metal production and metal processing, gpb has been in the business for thirty years, putting skills, passion and technologies at service of many different customers. They did it with the help of a great machine fleet, which concerning sheet metal working includes a fiber laser cutting machine, press-brakes and a guillotine shear, all built and provided by warcom, and all interconnected in a 4.0 Environment. Based in Gussago (Province of Brescia, Italy), GPB operates in the processing areas typical of Northern Italy metallurgical district: from light mechanical carpentry to sheet metal processing; from 3D design in Cad/Cam to metal processing; from mechanical processing to assembly operations and finishing. An activity in which skills, passion, commitment and active support to the customer, are declined in a variety of services offered to different sectors. “We have, generally speaking, two ways of work - explains the owner Nicola Peroni - which are based on the needs of the customer who can turn to us with a project already well defined, or with a prototype or an idea to be developed from scratch. In both cases, our technical department is in charge of studying the order and generating the offer. And, if this is positively accepted, the executive process begins, aimed at optimizing time and methods in compliance with the requirements expected by the client”. In the first case, GPB records the order in the management system with a single encoding, which identifies the offer, and then passes the information to the design office. “Our designers - Peroni continues – will work on the project, establishing all the different pieces that will be a part of the final product. These data are then sent to a dedicated software that, in a totally automatic way, distributes the lists of work to the various machines, whether they need cutting, bending or anything else. The cutting procedure also involves the engraving of article code on the cut pieces. The semi-finished pieces then pass to the bending phase.

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

THE COMPANY IN A NUTSHELL In over 30 years of activity, GPB has acquired plenty of orders, thanks to the variety of services which has always offered: realization of 3D prototypes, photorealistic renderings and design of components on request; mechanical carpentry work on sheet metal up to sizes of 1.500 x 4000 mm and thicknesses from 1 to 12 mm, by shearing, bending, punching; laser cut; processing of sections, construction of modular structures, electrical panels, industrial soundproof systems, containers and equipment for ecology sector. Traditional lathes and millers, radial and column drills, automatic cutters and tube bending

machines allow GPB to offer a wide range of technologies for the construction of complex structures, while special lines allow them to provide assembly work and preassembly of parts, components and metal accessories. The articulated activity takes place in the 3,500 square meters of GPB facility in Gussago (Province of Brescia, Italy) and involves around 30 employees. To provide the best service possible to its customers, GPB created over the years important collaborations with external partners in the area, able to ensure quality, reliability and maximum precision in painting, galvanizing and other kind of treatments.

Here the operator enters the code on the machine, the 3D bending sequence appears on CNC, always automatically, and machine will be ready to start bending. Once the bending has been carried out, the sheet metal products are brought to the final assembly. On the other hand, in case the customer only has a rough idea or the prototype of a project, the technical office is in charge of developing

the design from scratch, making targeted proposals to optimize the technical characteristics, aesthetic properties and expected quality levels. Everything done in order to help subsequent industrialization. In addition to Cad/Cam modeling, the team is also involved in the realization of photorealistic renderings which allow the customers to better understand all the aspects of the final product.

Interconnected Machines

A rigorous and efficient approach, based on a software implementation that allows the company to manage every order in all its phases, in a totally digitized way: from design, to production, to assembly, to final delivery. In this direction, the investments made in 4.0 key have been huge. Including the interconnection of the machines, which for the sheet metal working part include several systems supplied by Warcom: three hydraulic press-brakes, of which two Dinamica and one Evoluta series, an electric Logica and a Maxima guillotine shear. “To these - adds Peroni - we added the fiber laser cutting system from Warcom, a W.Fiber 2040 with a 3 kW source, complete with automatic loading and unloading system.

assembly works, GPB provides also plenty of different services, in a wide range of industrial applications, for example in the areas of extrusion and die-casting, in the metalworking sector or in the automotive sector. The company has specific lines for assembly and pre-assembly of components and parts, often adapted to the specific needs of the customers who thus find a highly personalized and tailor-made service based on production requirements. In this way, the outsourced assembly allows the customer to receive the goods quickly, with scrupulous and careful quality control.

Interconnected Machines

“Through a dense network of collaborations and partnerships of trust built over more than three decades of activity in the sector - adds Peroni - we can offer on request all types of processing and treatments: such as painting and galvanizing. Light and medium-heavy carpentry works can thus find optimization in quality and performance through specific finishing treatments that increase their aesthetic properties, anti-corrosion and anti-rust characteristics, as well as protection from external agents or chemical substances”.

The added value of versatility and rapid set-ups As already underlined, in GPB are now operating in addition to the fiber laser cutting plant, two Dinamica series press brakes, one Evoluta and one Logic plus a guillotine shear. Diversified machines, all bought from Warcom “The relationship with Warcom – confirms and concludes Peroni - is now thirty years old. A supplier who has reliable and efficient solutions. And above all, we are talking about machines of which we really appreciate the great versatility and flexibility as well as very rapid set-up times. And this is in line with our requirements of very frequent and different changes”. GPB also appreciates the support from Warcom, always rapid and efficient. This led over time in a renewal of trust, concretized in the purchase of the aforementioned machines.
