BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

While ensuring user safety is critical for both press brake manufacturers and operators, it is equally important to maintain machine performance. In general, traditional safety and optical protection methods can restrict machine performance and interfere with part production that can result in significantly reduced productivity.

Press Brakes with embedded RapidBend technology utilise high speed progressive muting that enables the tools to close safely at high speed until the punch is only millimetres above the material. This reduces the slow speed travel distance on every cycle for both flat profile parts and box profile parts with side flanges.

RapidBend technology is available in two performance levels - RapidBend and RapidBend Ultimate - to boost machine performance and significantly enhance your productivity.

RapidBend

The entry level RapidBend option enables the press brake to close safely at high speed until the punch is just 4mm above the material. During approach to the pinch point, the machine travels at maximum closing speed with dynamic sensing enabled for various part profiles for uninterrupted closing and shorter deceleration to forming speed minimising the slow speed travel distance to the final 4mm above the pinch point.

RapidBend Ultimate

RapidBend Ultimate technology changes the game by enabling press brakes to operate without restriction to achieve maximum safety and performance. Through a high-speed dynamic muting process and in conjunction with BendShield technology, the tools can close safely at maximum speed, then transition to bending speed right at the material pinch point. This effectively reduces the minimum speed change point to 0mm, eliminating unnecessary slow speed travel to minimise the machine cycle time. RapidBend Ultimate works with a wide range of part profiles including box bending with side flanges.

With time savings of as much as 3 seconds per cycle, RapidBend Ultimate boosts machine performance to significantly enhance your productivity.

Press Brakes equipped with RapidBend technology provide users with higher levels of safety and performance that consistently outperform any other machines on the market. Only press brakes with embedded RapidBend technology can guarantee higher levels of performance, so consider RapidBend or RapidBend Ultimate when purchasing your next machine.

BendVision

Real-time bending analysis - unlimited possibilities.

What is BendVision?

BendVision is an advanced high-speed image processing technology that provides real-time analysis of the bending process. The technology is incorporated into the existing hardware of the press brake optical guarding system so no extra components are required, resulting in an efficient and cost effective solution.

What does BendVision do?

BendVision processes images of the press brake tools and material during the bending process and transfers a range of information to the CNC via SmartLink, including raw and processed images, material bend velocity and live angle data. Press brakes equipped with BendVision can make use of this real-time data to provide users with a wide range of customised functions.

BendVision for angle measurement

BendVision technology provides a range of angle measurement data that includes the inside and outside angles of the material, average angle, material warp angle from machine deflection, material spring back angles for various material types, thickness and grain direction, plus end of relaxation angle once the bend has been completed.

BendVision for angle control

The ability for the CNC to receive BendVision angle data opens up a wide range of possibilities for real-time angle control. Instead of just confirming angles are within tolerance, the CNC can use the live angle plus a measured spring back angle to control the bending depth for flexible active and dynamic angle control solutions.

With extended reach, multiple pivot points, greater flexibility for positioning, rotation, and orientation, controls can be positioned anywhere in the workplace for greater operator efficiency. And with Dual 24” monitors, Full Screen Bend Simulation, Optional Rear and Front Camera View, USB Connectivity, Ethernet / WiFi / Bluetooth Compatibilities, and more, the machine’s new Human Machine Interface creates a highly efficient and interactive workstation environment.

CI offers three variations of the machine ranging from the standard XFORM, XFORMe (An ecological hybrid design with operating efficiencies resulting in less oil usage and more energy savings) and XFORMc (A customized version).

LASER CUTTING: CLX 4020

Laser cutting thicker metals is a growing priority and CI is giving manufacturers plenty to think about in terms of performance and automation. Show attendees can see the company’s CLX 4020 fiber laser at work along with a gas mixing device for processing thicker metals. Highly scalable, configurable, and capable of full or semi-automation, the system is adaptable to meet the production and floor space requirements of virtually any manufacturer.

LASER AUTOMATION: MARCH 500 CORE

Automation is becoming increasingly critical in the wake of labor shortages, increased demand, and other industry challenges. Laser operators spend an inordinate amount of time loading and unloading materials and separating parts. CI is bringing to the show the new MARCH 500 CORE which offers an automated load/unload system for stand-alone or lights-out production as well as support for manufacturers who are not fully automated.

BENDING & WELDING: EASY AUTOMATION

While automation is top of mind for many smaller manufacturers, the cost of entry can be high. Cobotic arms increase efficiency and allow a single operator to run multiple press brake or welding applications simultaneously.

“With low-code programming, CI’s EZ Bend™ and EZ Weld™ ease the transition to automation allowing manufacturers to incorporate bending and welding automation easily and at a comfortable price point.” states Ryan Lemmel, Business Unit Leader - After Sales, “What’s more, users don’t need to be an engineer, master programmer, or manipulate 3D models to begin taking advantage of automation.”

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE 26

SOFTWARE: SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY

CI ties it all together with an integrated smart manufacturing environment extending throughout shop floor equipment and applications to front office ERP/MRP systems. According to Software Product Manager, Mark Watson, this highly automated approach frees the manufacturer from unnecessary programming, accelerates production, and maintains the digital thread throughout the process.

“It’s all about automation and connectivity,” said Watson. “We’re providing a start to finish approach from an ERP demand. When a manufacturer knows what needs to be produced from their ERP, we can automatically nest, schedule and balance the workload across all equipment. And when the parts are produced, they are inspected for quality. Finally at the end of the cycle the results are fed back to the ERP system quickly - all without manual input.”

The integrated CI environment allows manufacturers to leverage real-time machine data to maximize production, anticipate problems, and take advantage of opportunities. “Your machines are talking are you listening? Machines can tell you what’s happening with them.

Whether it’s to give somebody the opportunity to manage the process right now and solve a problem that might be occurring or giving them data so they can make datadriven decisions and find those hidden gems.”

INSPXT™ MEASURING SYSTEM

Quality is job 1 for any manufacturer and the CI InspXt Measuring System ensures that parts that fail to meet quality standards or customer specifications do not leave the cutting station. InspXt inspects parts for tolerance deviations, flaws, and anomalies more accurately than visual systems currently on the market. But it doesn’t stop there, InspXt connects with the CI scheduling system and failed parts are recut on the laser with the proper dimensions – all without manual intervention.

SEE FOR YOURSELF

Anyone looking to enhance your entire shop floor should make it a point to see what CINCINNATI has to offer. The company will showcase its complete solution (exhibit space A4513) each day of the Fabtech show on the hour from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The demonstration begins with an assembly solid model, split that into laser and press brake programs, and move to the machines for processing then inspection.

New TRUMPF bending machine for large and high tonnage parts now available in North America

With a 34-inch open height and a stroke of 27 inches, the TruBend 8000 bending machine offers a highly efficient way to bend very large parts, allowing workers to easily bend and remove workpieces that require a large box height. The press brake is available with numerous optional extras designed to facilitate the bending of heavy parts. These features include a bending aid that makes operators’ lives easier by automatically positioning the workpiece for bending. TruBend 8000 Series machines can also be equipped with a special tool clamp for high tonnage applications.

“The new TruBend 8000 Series is the perfect addition to our bending solution portfolio,” says TRUMPF Inc. product manager for standalone TruBend machines, Chris Wargo. “Whatever their bending application, companies can rely on TRUMPF to have the press brake technology they need.”

THE BEST WAY TO BEND HIGH-TENSILE STEELS

Starting with a press force of 440 tons and going all the way to 1,100 tons, this new generation of machines is an efficient powerhouse that has no trouble processing long, thick pieces of sheet metal. The machine is also suitable for bending high-tensile materials such as Hardox or Weldox engineering steels. Station bending is another option available with the TruBend 8000. By moving workpieces from one station to the next, each equipped with different upper and lower tools, workers can tackle a range of parts and bending operations without having to change the machine setup for each operation.

This makes the TruBend 8000 particularly suitable for companies that bend large parts in small batches, including fabricators in the vehicle manufacturing, mechanical engineering, and building-services sectors. This model is also a great choice for general-purpose work in job shops.

SOFTWARE AND SUSTAINABILITY

The TruBend 8000 Series comes with TRUMPF’s triedand-tested Boost and TecZone Bend bending software for offline programming. The machine operator simply uploads a 2D or 3D model of their part into the program. Then, the software independently creates a 3D simulation including collision monitoring, which the operator can then adopt for the bending process, either in its entirety or with minor manual changes. TruBend 8000 machines are also designed to facilitate the trend toward greater sustainability in manufacturing. Users can choose to equip their machine with an on-demand drive, which automatically adjusts the motor’s revolution speed to the movement of the press beam. As well as limiting noise generation, this feature can also reduce energy consumption by up to 26 percent.

Salvagnini P-Robot debut at Fabtech

Robotization is not simple, but it remains a very current trend. New installations of robots in the manufacturing industry grew by 13% YOY in 2021, while the robots in use number over three million. This is why Salvagnini is introducing P-Robot, a new application which combines a panel bender with a robot to produce kits, batches and single parts autonomously.

“We have been involved with robotics applied to sheet metal processing for some time,” explains Nicola Artuso, Salvagnini Product Manager for bending technologies.

“We wanted a smart solution which was much simpler than those already on the market: simpler to program, simpler to use, and able - if possible - to exponentially improve the flexibility and productivity of our panel benders. And we also wanted a solution suited to our compact panel benders, not just the automatic ones. With P-Robot, we are sure we have achieved our goal.”

The rationale for the design of P-Robot aimed to solve some of the issues typical of traditional robotized solutions, as well as meeting market requirements: it offers a compact and modular layout, is perfectly integrated on both the hardware and the software side, makes robot programming as simple as possible too, and allows for a certain level of customization so as to respond to specific production requirements.

“This P-Robot incorporates a P1, but we can also apply it to the P2 and P4,” Artuso continues. “The P1 is our electric panel bender, with energy consumption of less than 3 kW and a footprint of just 8 m2. It is a standard panel bender, just like the robot – a choice which has great advantages in terms of certifications. For the robot, we have chosen a partner which allows us to move around in proximity to the working area in complete safety: this translates into an extremely compact layout. The robot is equipped with a flippable gripping device, fitted with suction cups on two sides, for picking up the bent part and immediately positioning the new part to be bent, incycle. This gripping device therefore allows optimization of the sheet loading/unloading cycles, improvement of production rates, and a reduction in waiting times. We have not overlooked modularity and adaptivity either: according to the specific needs of each customer, their products, and an in-depth feasibility study, we can offer solutions with loading/unloading assistance only, or else more complex systems providing for automatic movement of the pallets or third-party integrations – for example with work centers for labeling, laser marking, riveting, welding, and corner forming.”

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE 48

Complex industrial automation systems generally require significant integration between the individual technologies they are composed of. From this point of view, P-Robot ensures optimum management of the process because Salvagnini has perfect knowledge of all the movements of the panel bender, having designed it, and has a high-level view of those of the robot as well. The robot essentially becomes an option of the panel bender, with positive effects on programming too, which is perhaps the main advantage of P-Robot.

“As we said, the panel bender is a standard model: like any other Salvagnini panel bender, it is generally programmed in the office,” Artuso adds. “The program, made with STREAMBEND, can be used without the need for modifications on either P-Robot or on panel benders without robots, obviously as long as these are Salvagnini panel benders. On board the machine, the MOVE software acquires the panel bending program, from which it generates the dimensions of the flat part and the finished panel that it uses to automatically generate the robot trajectories. The operator will simply need to confirm or, if necessary, modify a small number of checking positions to complete the programming of the robot. MOVE manages the intermediate movements of the robot autonomously too, and the operator is only required to make a reduced set of movements. This is, in short, a fullyfledged smart teaching system, which makes offline robot programming redundant.”

A further strength of P-Robot is its eclectic nature: it is not an isolated or closed system. P-Robot extends the flexibility and productivity of Salvagnini panel benders because it allows the best strategy to be chosen, based on the current production needs. On unmanned shifts, or in production contexts where a single operator monitors numerous systems, P-Robot naturally works in R2R (robot to robot) mode, loading, unloading and, if necessary, stacking the parts. But this is not an exclusive strategy: the same P-Robot can work in different modes, seamlessly and without re-tooling. In R2H (robot to human) mode, it is responsible solely for loading the flat part, whereas the operator is responsible for unloading the panel. This is an advantageous strategy if the operator must complete the processing of the panel on a different workstation –for example with a press brake or a welding machine. In H2R (human to robot) mode, it is the operator who will load the flat part onto the working area, and the robot will unload the panel at the end of the cycle: this strategy is useful for managing extremely diversified batch-one production. Without forgetting that the panel bender nevertheless remains available for any work managed completely by the operator.

“In order to summarize the concept, P-Robot defines a new paradigm of the panel bender with robot configuration, maximizing its flexibility and productivity. But P-Robot is also an automation, because it automates some steps of the panel bending process and, like all automations, can contribute to improving efficiency and reducing labor costs. But P-Robot is not limited to this. Its great benefit is that it is not necessary to choose a specific production strategy in the design phase. It can solve different requirements: large batches, small batches, kits, batch-one, but also ownstream integrations, total automation, partial automation, or no automation, as required. We are sure that the market will immediately grasp the potential of P-Robot and confirm that we have made all the right choices,” Artuso concludes.

Knowing where things are: TRUMPF launches new tracking software for manufacturing

With Coriva, TRUMPF Tracking Technologies – a company set up by TRUMPF in 2021 – launched a new tracking program for digitally networked production this summer. This software is the only solution in the world that can locate all systems compatible with the open location standard “omlox.” “Thanks to Coriva, users can track their entire production operations in real time without investing in a new IT infrastructure. This results in efficiency gains throughout the process chain,” says Daniel Bossert, Chief Customer Officer at TRUMPF Tracking Technologies.

REAL-TIME TRACKING

Users wishing to deploy Coriva fit their production facilities with intelligent satellites. They also install digital markers, known as “tags,” on objects they would like to track within production. For instance, these might be orders, materials, pallets, containers, mounting carts, forklift trucks, driverless transport systems, tools or drones. The tags are able to send their live location to the satellites every 125 milliseconds. With the help of an algorithm, the software can calculate the position data for all tagged objects and digitally map the production facility in real time. What makes Coriva unique is that the software can even locate tags from other manufacturers; the only requirement is that they are compatible with the open industry standard “omlox.”

TRUMPF Tracking Technologies employs ultra-wideband technology (UWB) for Coriva. This is ideal for the precise and robust tracking of objects in industrial environments.

SHORTER SEARCH TIMES, MORE EFFICIENCY

Coriva is perfect for any company that is looking to produce more efficiently using digitalization. Bossert explains that the potential is especially high for companies who manufacture small batches of products with numerous different versions and where automation is still in its infancy. Several customers have already incorporated the solution into their production, with TRUMPF Tracking Technologies able to demonstrate that the investment in Coriva is recouped after just one year. The solution enables a sharp reduction in search times, for example, and allows orders to be recorded automatically within the production sequence. Thanks to standardized omlox interfaces, Coriva can be quickly and easily combined with software applications of other manufacturers, e.g., value stream mapping and manufacturing executive systems (MES). Drive System Overview

Hydraulic Press Brakes

Standard hydraulic designs have been the primary type of drive system for press brakes for decades. While there have been more advanced hybrid and electric systems developed over the years, hydraulic press brakes still account for the majority of machines manufactured today due to their reliability, versatility and flexibility. From small, light tonnage models right through to large machines with very high pressing force.

BENEFITS TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

• All-round versatility. Machines are available in a wide range of lengths and tonnages.

• Hydraulic systems can achieve a much higher pressing force compared with hybrid and electric machines.

• A greater range of material thicknesses can be processed, from light gauge material to heavy plate metal.

• Manufacturers offer greater flexibility and customisation including larger tool openings and throat depths.

• Long-term durability, reliability and ease of servicing.

Hybrid Press Brakes

• Incredibly versatile and suitable for almost any bending application.

• Suitable for low tonnage applications right through to high tonnage applications in excess of 4,000 tons.

• Suitable for a wider range of bending lengths up to around 14 metres.

Hybrid press brakes combine both hydraulic and electric elements, achieving a more energy efficient drive system with improved performance.

Hybrid press brakes use a bi-directional servo electric drive system to pump oil to the hydraulic cylinders. Compared with a traditional hydraulic system where the pump is running continuously, even when the machine is idle, a hybrid system is only working when motion is required. This means that hybrid systems consume very little energy when idle and are more energy efficient when working.

Hybrid systems use a smaller hydraulic oil tank, leading to a more efficient design and lower maintenance costs when an oil change is required.

When it comes to noise output, hybrid systems are quieter than hydraulic machines due to the lower sound levels of the servo electric drives compared with traditional hydraulic pump motors and that they are only running while the machine is being operated.

BENEFITS TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

• Lower energy consumption since the pump is only running when the machine is moving and when bending force is required.

• Improved control and bending accuracy.

• Faster acceleration and deceleration which results in shorter cycle times.

• Lower noise levels.

• Use less oil than hydraulic machines.

• Economical to maintain.

• Suitable for a wide range of bending applications that require pressing force up to around 500 tons.

• Suit a range of bending lengths up to around 7 metres.

• Ideal for high-volume production where speed, accuracy and efficiency are required.

BUYER’S GUIDE

Electric Press Brakes

Electric press brakes eliminate the need for hydraulic pumps, valves and complex piping, for an extremely quiet, fast and efficient bending solution. Electric machines can feature a variety of drive methods including belt or gear direct drive systems and belt / pulley systems for even distribution of pressing force on longer machines.

Smaller models are ergonomically designed with integrated foot pedals and folding support tables that allow workers to comfortably operate the machine from a seated position as well as offering a range of additional features that help to reduce operator fatigue.

BENEFITS

• Extremely quiet.

• Low energy consumption.

• Ergonomically designed for optimal comfort and reduced operator fatigue.

• Smaller models can be portable, offering greater flexibility for machine placement in the workshop.

• Consistent operation and accuracy over time since there is no degradation of hydraulic components.

• Require minimal maintenance compared with hydraulic and hybrid machines since there are no hydraulic components to service or oil changes required.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

• Electric machines are ideal for repetitive bending of small parts where fast cycle speed and accuracy is required.

• Suitable for low tonnage bending applications of up to around 200 tons.

• Suitable for bending lengths up to around 4 metres.
