Publisher’s Note Welcome to the autumn issue of Kerrisdale Insider! In addition to the ongoing pandemic, the impact of climate change has been of great concern with the intense heat waves and catastrophic wildfires we’ve experienced throughout the province. Locally, the Kerrisdale Business Association worked hard with neighbourhood businesses to promote outdoor dining and take-out meals. Every Saturday afternoon in July and August people were treated to the joy of music with Concerts Under the Clock. We are happy to report the return of Kerrisdale Days; the well-loved event will be celebrated with care on September 10 and 11. Head to Elm Park on Friday at dusk to watch the movie The NeverEnding Story. Grab a coffee, visit Kerrisdale’s many fine restaurants and shops, and take in the super sidewalk sales and pop-up musicians throughout the village. Enjoy free horse and carriage rides and celebrate Kerrisdale’s 116th birthday on Saturday with free cupcakes in front of Moore’s Bakery at 3:00 p.m. (see details on page 3). On the cover is Linda Hudson, the owner, and president of Kerrisdale Cameras, which is the oldest and largest independent specialty

photo retailer in Western Canada. Sixty years ago Linda’s father Bob Hudson, and her grandmother, Mary Hudson, opened their first camera shop on West 41st Avenue. A true success story, the company now operates six stores in Metro Vancouver and one in Victoria. Read about the majestic Sequoia tree that was cut down in 2019 in front of West Wood Organics. With the generous assistance of Kerrisdale Lumber, Magee Secondary students were able to fabricate the lumber into benches. The community will now be able to appreciate the Sequoia in its new form for many years to come. We extend a warm welcome to the following new businesses that recently opened: Tai One Bing (inside BlackBall), LXY Hunan Fusion, Simplique Mode, and Celeste Hair & Beauty. Sadly, One Bowl, Nutraways, Ping Ting Spa, and Transat Travel have closed their Kerrisdale storefronts. We are seeing signs of the weather cooling down after this very hot and dry summer. Enjoy the crisp autumn air and the comfort and charm of this wonderful village. We thank you for choosing to shop local and help keep Kerrisdale vibrant.

KERRISDALE CAMERAS: Celebrating 60 Years as a Family Business Story by Sarah Gordon

photos by Sandra Steier & Carolynne Palla

Over the last 60 years, many businesses have come and gone from Kerrisdale Village, while a handful of family-owned businesses have stood the test of time. Kerrisdale Cameras is one of these success stories. Linda Hudson is Kerrisdale Cameras’ president and owner. In 1961, her father, Bob Hudson, and her grandmother, Mary Hudson, opened their camera business on West 41st Avenue. Linda says, “My father’s interest in cameras dates back before the opening of his first store. ‘I started selling equipment when I was going to UBC to break the monotony of classes,’ Bob told a photo magazine back in 1990. With a mischievous grin, he’d recalled how he was even selling the equipment while in class. Appropriately named, his business Varsity Camera was based out of the family home near UBC—when he wasn’t selling during classes.”

Vancouver, Bob had numerous requests to open more shops. Between the years 1968 to 1986, branch stores opened in West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, and Surrey. Victoria replaced Surrey in 1986.

“Seven stores had become the magical number for us to maintain the personal touch with both customers and employees,” says Linda.

Following graduation from UBC and shortly after his father passed away, Bob decided to open Kerrisdale Cameras. Initially, he continued working at his full-time job at Safeway, across the street, while his mother ran the shop. He would return to the store during his breaks at Safeway. As people moved out of the Kerrisdale neighbourhood to other areas around Metro 8

Linda shares, “Growing up in the family business meant that Dad worked long hours and family vacations were limited but we did lots of camping. We weren’t encouraged to follow in his footsteps but I had a camera from the time I was very young (I still have that camera). I also learned to work in our home darkroom with my dad. I was in photo clubs at Kerrisdale Elementary School, Prince of Wales Mini School, and then Langara College. It was at college that I found an interest in business courses instead of continuing with sciences, and asked Dad for course recommendations. Little did I know how that set me up for the future.” Similar to her father, Linda attained a business degree in the 1980s, but she majored in human resources and accounting in addition to marketing. In 1981, following college, Linda joined the family business and held the position of personnel and advertising manager until 2011. She says, “I didn’t see this as a long-term career, just long enough to get work experience, attend SFU and move on... KerrisdaleInsider.com

but I never left. My grandmother continued working into her mid-eighties and retired in the late 1990s. My sister and one of my brothers worked in the business for a few years. My mother, Jay Hudson, was very involved in the Kerrisdale community and taught at Point Grey Secondary in the 1960s, however, she didn’t work in the business. For a number of years, four members of three generations of the Hudson family worked together, although to be honest, not always in harmony.” “We adapted early on to the digital world as all our employees embraced the new technology. While phones have replaced smaller pointand-shoot cameras, more people than ever are discovering the world of photography beyond what they can do with their cell phones. One manager aptly describes cell phones as the gateway drug to advanced digital cameras. Photography has become more popular than ever and the technology in today’s cameras is incredible. Plus, we’ve had a website with online shopping for about 20 years,” Linda says.

September 1 - November 15, 2021

Throughout the digital era, film photography continued and is currently experiencing a revival. Many young people who grew up with digital are now using film cameras. Linda comments, “They appreciate the look and the process. It’s not instant and every shot has to be more thought out. We have been bringing in a greater variety of films and our photo lab is kept quite busy with both film and digital orders. Plus, with a continuous flow of tradeins, both digital and film, photo enthusiasts can add to their photo gear at significant savings while those new to photography can get started on a shoestring budget.” Sadly, in the fall of 2011, following the death of Linda’s mother, and shortly after celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary, her father passed away unexpectedly at age 79 of heart failure.

“Taking over the company the same week as celebrating 30 years working with my dad, wasn’t what I anticipated; I expected he’d be running the company for another 10 or more years.”

She remarks, “I’ve retained the position of human resources manager, which has enabled me to hire everyone who currently works in the company. In our dealings with our customers and our employees, we strive to meet the highest standards of fairness and honesty. We’re a small independent photo specialty chain with store managers and employees who share our commitment to providing personalized, knowledgeable service. Our “we show you how” service ensures our customers get the most from their new camera gear. Perhaps this commitment and family atmosphere is why forty per cent of our employees have been with the company for over ten years. Employee turnover is very low and is often the result of retirements. Most employees have many years in the photo industry and many are professional photographers or graduates of photographic schools and colleges. All of them are avid hobbyists and their passion for photography drives them to stay current on the latest cameras and photo gear.” “Since taking over running the company, I continue to be in the office every day, just as my dad was. Having our head office at the back of our store in Kerrisdale keeps us in tune with our employees and customers. Unlike the people I hire, I’m not a pro photographer and don’t stay up to date on the latest photo gear; my strength has been my keen interest in the business side of our industry,” Linda says.

“Running a small to medium business means wearing multiple hats and never knowing what the next day will bring.” Over the past 10 years, Kerrisdale Cameras has moved three stores, and renovated all the other stores. In 2013, they added the Langley store as their eighth store, which had belonged to a competitor that was downsizing, and their five employees joined the business. In 2019, the concrete foundation of the West Vancouver store, her dad’s first branch store in 1968, was

cracking and they had to quickly shut down the store with nowhere to move to on short notice. Linda comments, “One day, I hope we will be able to return to eight stores when an opportunity arises. As other camera stores have closed or downsized over the past ten years, we’ve had the opportunity to hire some of the best photo sales specialists in the industry.” Linda is actively involved in the Kerrisdale community that is also her home. Her involvement with the Kerrisdale Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness (KEEP), allowed her to get to know more local residents. Linda says, “Being on the board of the Kerrisdale

Business Association and getting to know the local business owners reinforces the villagelike feeling of the community.” Running along the greenway, skating at Kerrisdale Arena, attending classes at the Kerrisdale Community Centre, and cycling to work are all things that Linda still enjoys doing just as she did as a kid growing up nearby. She remarks, “Yes, Kerrisdale has changed, but growing up along with the community for all these years, I’ve been able to see these as positive changes. I truly hope that the shop local movement continues so our small independent businesses can thrive for decades to come, rather than being replaced by national chain stores. Small shops offer a unique shopping experience.” Commenting on the pandemic, Linda says, “As a store owner, the pandemic has been overwhelming, as it has been for many small to medium businesses. However, while things have appeared daunting at times, we have been constantly reminded of how fortunate we are to be in communities where people support small local businesses.”

have the sense that my dad’s company (I still think of it as his) will come out of the pandemic stronger than ever and that will be because of the support of our employees and customers,” she says. As Kerrisdale Cameras continues to successfully march along, what does Linda predict the years ahead will look like? “Photography is growing in popularity so we’ll continue to thrive. While many businesses in the photo industry found that cell phones replaced real cameras, we took a different approach. For us, cell phones have opened up the world of advanced photography to so many people and helped contribute to our success. We’re proud to be the oldest and largest independent photo chain in Western Canada, still owned by the original family,” she concludes. We wish Kerrisdale Cameras a very happy sixtieth anniversary—and many more!

Reaching the 60th anniversary of Kerrisdale Cameras is a surreal feeling for Linda. “I now

ASK A KERRISDALE INSIDER How did LIVE WELL help Mavis in the pandemic? Mavis Holm wanted to live life to the fullest as she aged. So she did something about it! The 77-year old grandmother of seven had never been inside a gym until five years ago when she discovered LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic. “LIVE WELL isn’t just a gym. Because it is small group training, you make social connections, which is so important as we age!”

Mavis Holm, a LIVE WELL member

When the pandemic struck, LIVE WELL launched a virtual platform within nine days “I was able to Zoom into class and a staff member checked on my progress regularly, supporting me physically and mentally!“ The results are evident: Mavis has kept her blood pressure stable, increased her strength and has the stamina to keep up with her youngest grandchild! “Despite starting late, exercise has become part of my life. KERRISDALE’S ICONIC SEQUOIA TREE: A New Lease on Life Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted

It was a sad evening on March 3, 2019, when Kerrisdale’s majestic Sequoia was cut down. The 90-year-old tree had been a valued part of the neighbourhood, standing tall and mighty on West 41st Avenue near Vine Street.

Terri says, “In March 2019, I contacted Mark Perry, who owns Kerrisdale Lumber, and asked if his forces could be there the night of the felling and secure an 18-foot log for us.”

Terri Clark, coordinator of the Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) says, “The KBA had been advocating for the tree’s health, even offering to have an arborist assess it at our cost. Despite that, and following three hotter than usual summers, the tree effectively died and presented possible safety issues.”

“At their own cost, Mark’s staff and lumber vehicle secured the log and then drove it to their yard,” says Terri.

Proactively, Terri contacted the property manager, as the tree stood on private, commercial property, and asked if he would be receptive to the KBA taking a large chunk of the landmark Sequoia when it was taken down.

She also contacted Andrew Robinson, a Technology Studies teacher at Magee Secondary School, to ask if he would be interested in using the wood when it was milled and dried for students to fabricate into benches

for the community’s enjoyment. He pitched the idea to Magee’s principal who agreed it would make an interesting project. Mark arranged for the log to be milled on the Sunshine Coast, which the KBA financed. Kerrisdale Lumber delivered the rough boards to Magee in the fall of 2019. Andrew explains, “The wood needed to dry for a year. This is a process that must happen with all lumber.”

Andrew was invested in the project as soon as he learned about the opportunity to repurpose the tree. He says, “I believe it is important to develop and maintain a strong connection between the school and the surrounding community; this helps students connect what they are learning in the classroom to the outside world. I feel it is vital that I help facilitate learning opportunities where my students can make these connections between the community and what they are designing and fabricating in the shop at Magee.” “The Sequoia project embodies these beliefs while also enabling students to make tangible connections between their local environment, materials, and the manufacturing process,” says Andrew. Some production delays occurred due to the pandemic. Andrew mentions, “Our schedule was changed to meet the new COVID-19 safety protocols created by the Ministry of Education. As a result, the school year was divided into four quarters, which meant courses would be intensive for two to three months as opposed

KerrisdaleInsider.com

to year-long programs. This change required our original plan to be refined since I would not have the same amount of time to work with students to design and fabricate the benches. We decided to scale back the project to ensure success given the ever-changing landscape of a COVID world.” Andrew worked with Evan Fedder, a Magee student who recently graduated from Grade 12. Evan completed the Design and Fabrication course, while in Grade 11, and worked as Andrew’s community service student. The talented young designer will be attending Dalhousie University next year where he will study Engineering. “Evan took full responsibility for the project, coming up with all the design ideas and completing all the machining and finishing. He spent two months designing, milling, machining, and finishing the benches. In doing so, he demonstrated an excellent ability to visualize his design, layout measurements, and organize his materials. He safely and successfully used several stationary machines including but not limited to the jointer, planer, table saw and chop saw to mill, machine, and joinery for all the parts,” Andrew reports. To date, two benches have been completed. They were delivered on July 16, 2021, to the store adjacent to the Sequoia’s massive stump. Additional benches will be fabricated by Magee students starting in September 2021, as a way to raise funds for the Design and Fabrication program. The KBA plans to locate some of the benches along the Arbutus Greenway. There is a lovely symmetry to this story; the tree that was loved by the community resulted in dedicated community members banding together, and now the iconic Sequoia will be enjoyed in its new form for years to come.

Chloe’s Architect Has Deep Roots In The Neighbourhood Hugh Magee was one of Kerrisdale’s earliest and most successful European settlers. His great-great-grandson is proud to be the architect for Chloe — a chic new residential community that the neighbourhood will be proud of.

NEIGHBOURHOOD P R I D E A N D J OY When Vicky Zheng first strolled the leafy streets of Kerrisdale, she was charmed by the neighbourhood. Its deep history and sense of community were apparent in the many independent businesses that had served a loyal clientele for decades. Elegant heritage homes with lush gardens graced its generous avenues. One-of-a-kind shopfronts radiated character, evoking the quiet gentility of European high streets. The fashion boutiques, florists, sidewalk cafes, and bakeries reminded her of Paris. As president of Matchpoint Development, Vicky has a professional eye for the details that make a neighbourhood special, and she saw that Kerrisdale had those qualities in abundance. She made Kerrisdale her home in 2008, and her love for the community grew as she came to know it even better. After her company purchased the development site on West 48th Avenue and East Boulevard, she met with Bryce Rositch, owner of R.H. Architects. She told him she had a vision for the project. “I wanted to build something

38

that did true justice to Kerrisdale and all that it represents – nature, culture, community and heritage. I wanted to create something that Kerrisdale would be proud of” Vicky says. A KERRISDALE PIONEER Bryce was one hundred percent behind her because it just so happened that Kerrisdale meant something special to him as well. He pointed out that Magee High School, roughly a block from the site, was named after his great-great grandfather, Hugh Magee, who emigrated from Ireland in 1858 and established a farm that would eventually encompass much of what we now call Kerrisdale. The family farm was built on West 48th Avenue, right on Matchpoint’s property. Like many pioneers, Magee was a visionary who made a significant impact on his new home. The local stop on the Interurban rail line, which connected Vancouver with Steveston, was called Magee Station. Magee Road, that once stretched from Blenheim to Granville Street, is now known as 49th Avenue. The Magee family history is woven throughout Kerrisdale.

A SHARED VISION Vicky was fascinated by the story of Magee — and by imagining Kerrisdale as it would have appeared when he first arrived. It seemed as if fate had directed her to an architect with an authentic connection to the neighbourhood, and she was excited that Bryce’s passion for creating something spectacular on that land seemed equal to her own. They started brainstorming ideas for the project’s design. Vicky envisioned a building that would complement the heritage homes of the neighbourhood and feel as if it belonged. She wanted it to radiate quality, to have the same street presence as classical European buildings. In essence, she hoped to bring the chic of a Paris fashion house to Kerrisdale. Her goal was to create a collection of residences that would reflect Parisienne style, taste, and way of living, with an emphasis on gracious entertaining — indoors, in beautifully appointed dining rooms, and outdoors on rooftop garden terraces. She imagined residents shopping for their groceries at Westwood Organics, ordering a cake from Moore’s Bakery, and choosing flowers from Thomas Hobbs. They would come home to lavish kitchens complete with wine fridges and Gaggenau appliances, to create elegant meals for friends and family. Intimate dinners would be hosted in the residence’s own exquisite great room, while grander occasions could take place in the lobby level’s formal dining room that seats ten. Inspired, Bryce began to sketch. PA R I S AT H O M E I N K E R R I S D A L E The result is Chloe, a refined four-storey concrete development featuring 48 residences including spacious one-, two-, and threebedroom homes. Chloe’s architectural presence and exterior materials, while stunning, are only part of the appeal. “This is a classic design on a gentle bend of the street, creating a small jewel on the quiet side of the boulevard — and a special

enclave within Kerrisdale,” says Craig Anderson of Magnum Projects. “Groundlevel shops will be set serenely apart from 41st Avenue’s retail. The location is parallel to the much loved Arbutus Greenway — a recreational thoroughfare enjoyed by residents in all seasons. It’s a key detail that will make Chloe the most talked-about project on the west side.” Chloe’s white and black aesthetic, with multi-paned windows and a majestic columned front entrance, was inspired by the great designers of Paris. However, it is firmly in Kerrisdale, complementing the established culture of the neighbourhood, while also enhancing it. Kerrisdale manages to juxtapose nature’s tranquility with Parisienne sophistication. And Chloe pays homage to the world-class City of Lights, while also offering the seaside within a bike ride, the North Shore mountains in view, easy access to woodland trails, and the Arbutus Greenway at your doorstep. Chloe infuses Kerrisdale with an extra splash of Paris, like tricking cassis into a glass of champagne to make something of extraordinary taste. Bryce wonders what Hugh Magee would think if he could step through those grand boule doors and into the lavish, porcelaintiled lobby of the now completed Chloe. “It’s interesting to imagine my great-great grandfather seeing how his village evolved into this gracious neighbourhood. I think he’d be proud of what we’ve done.”
