Publisher's Note With the unseasonably warm weather we are experiencing, groundhogs and meteorologists have predicted an early spring! People are marking their calendars for the Family Day long weekend on February 19. Daylight saving time begins March 10, coinciding with school spring break from March 18 to 29, followed by the Easter long weekend. Tragically, a devastating fire engulfed Super Grocer on the evening of January 26. Businesses and residents faced numerous challenges, including smoke and water damage and power outages. People rallied to support each other, exemplifying what an amazingly tight-knit community Steveston is. Read about the fundraiser that Steveston United Church has planned to help support Super Grocer’s employees who lost their jobs (page 29). Looking back, Christmas was magical. The rainy skies parted as Santa arrived by boat on December 3. People enjoyed old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage rides thanks to the Steveston Merchants Association and Tourism Richmond, raising money for the Richmond Christmas Fund. Steveston merchants created beautiful holiday displays; we congratulate the grand prize winner, Anar Persian Grill, for transforming the restaurant’s exterior into a charming gingerbread house. On the cover are Brian Cho and Marian Yoon, owners of Toast to Coast Brunch Bar. A little over a year ago, this new restaurant opened on the corner of Moncton Street and First Avenue; it is a common sight to see people lined up outside as they await a Korean fusion brunch.

Over the years, Stevestonites have been curious about what would go in Onni’s Imperial Landing, situated on the boardwalk. Good news! Steveston Waterfront Hotel opened in mid-December, offering visitors 32 beautifully appointed suites. We welcome Modern Med Aesthetics, Ochi Fashion, and 50’s Burger Restaurant to the village. After 20 years of business, Wool & Wicker closed in December. Steveston Winemakers is closing their storefront on March 12 and has merged their winemaking operations with Grapes 2 Wine on Bridgeport Road. Exciting changes are underway in the village! The new Steveston Community Centre is currently under construction, and stakeholders have been invited to learn about the Centre’s programs, events, and developments. This includes an update on the construction progress and other exciting activities in the vicinity. In an effort to ensure public safety and enhance the enjoyment of Steveston, the City has been actively seeking input for its Steveston Streetscape Plan. Stakeholders' feedback will contribute to establishing guiding principles for future improvements related to the character, design, and overall experience of streets and sidewalks in Steveston. We are looking forward to the longer and warmer days of spring (and hopefully a lot more sunshine!) so we can get out and enjoy every ounce of this beautiful seaside village.

Steveston's Korean Fusion Brunch Destination Story by Sarah Gordon

A little over a year ago, Toast to Coast arrived on Steveston’s brunch scene and has gained a significant following. It is common to see lineups outside the popular little restaurant as people eagerly await a Korean fusion brunch. Brian Cho and Marian Yoon are the restaurant’s owners. Marian prefers the title “creative director” as she works behind the scenes to bring forth new ideas and implements menu curation, marketing, and design. Brian is Toast to Coast’s executive chef and oversees the culinary team and kitchen management. As a single mother of two children, Marian gave up her career as an occupational therapist and moved to Canada in 2007. She was exhausted from her busy life and wanted to take a break.

We also provide them with delicious food and a great experience.” Brian’s father immigrated to Canada in the 1980s as a chef. Brian grew up seeing him cook a variety of cuisines. He says, “Although I was a junior tennis player and wanted to pursue that dream for a while, I quickly realized my true passion lay in the culinary field. When my father opened one of the first sushi restaurants in Vancouver in 2002, I became his apprentice and started my journey as a chef.”

They have extensive experience in the restaurant industry, having opened their first sushi restaurant in 2010 in Coquitlam. Over the last 13 years, they have had the privilege of serving Ladner, North Vancouver, Steveston and White Rock. Marian says, "Not many people know this, but we opened Mega Sushi in Steveston. We knew we had to start something here when we visited the area. We fell in love with the sense of community, the people, and the support small business owners have for one another, and we are thrilled to be back. Over the years that we served the community, we donated over $20,000 to various charities and formed lasting relationships. Steveston has a very special place in our hearts.”
“In 2022, we took a risk and pivoted to Korean cuisine and returned to our favourite neighbourhood,” Brian says. The partners felt there was a shortage of places to have brunch in Steveston. Marian remarks, “When we were gearing up for the opening, many people walked in and said they were so happy to see a brunch spot, especially Korean fusion. While several restaurants serve brunch, we provide the unique twist people crave.” “It’s so nice to be back. Some locals recognize us when they walk in, and it’s heartwarming to be remembered. Local businesses have been

amazingly welcoming, sharing about us on their social media and dining in to show their support.”
“K- anything is so popular these days, and we are proud to be bridging Korean cuisine with a classic brunch menu. We wanted more people to try Korean-inspired dishes that are still familiar to them.”

whipped cream, seasonal fruits, and housemade strawberry coulis. Brian’s personal favourite is the Hokey Pokey Bulgogi burger. “I love all the different textures with the juicy bulgogi, crispy onion and melted cheese. It’s super filling and well balanced.”
“We pride ourselves in only using high-quality ingredients and making almost all our menu and sauces in-house. We dry-age our bacon in-house, hand-make all hash blocks and cubes (we 3-D printed the molds!), use absolutely no MSG, use non-GMO ingredients, and use real Prosecco in our pancake batter. We make all our own pickles and sauces and try our best to use locally sourced ingredients. We don’t like cutting corners and want to serve delicious food prepared with care and love.”
“There isn’t a Korean restaurant in the area, so the fact that we offer Korean-inspired cuisine makes us stand out.” There are many popular menu items to choose from; one of the most requested dishes is Korean Chicken and Waffles. It’s described as a perfected waffle topped with juicy and crispy Korean-style fried chicken served with a side of maple syrup and honey-infused Korean dipping (or drizzle) sauce. Another top pick is the Korean Eggs Benny, which is bulgogi (Korean sweet beef), kimchi jam, and poached eggs served on top of hand-cut brioche buns served with hash blocks. The bulgogi marinade is an authentic Korean recipe from Brian’s father. Charlotte’s Pancakes (named after Marian’s granddaughter) are another crowd-pleaser. This stack of fluffy pancakes is made with flavours of Prosecco and is served with fresh 10

Marian’s favourite is the Tteok-galbi Benny. It has two Korean-style beef patties served on top of rice (instead of their usual brioche bun) with yuzu and kimchi jam and is topped with perfectly poached eggs and hollandaise. The extensive drink menu spotlights a variety of alcoholic, non-alcoholic and coffee options. Guest favourites include matcha latte, cappuccino brûlée (torched on top!), Toast to Coast’s mimosa, and Brunch Punch. The rewards of operating their new business are plentiful, and customers’ happy faces are at the top of the list. Marian says, “It feels so nice to know that we can reach so many people and positively impact our community. It’s also very rewarding to serve Korean food we ate growing up.” “If you’re new to Korean food, you’ll enjoy the twist to your classic brunch favourites, and I promise, you will want more. We extend a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us through our first year back, and we look forward to many more years of culinary adventures in Steveston,” Brian says. On December 10, on the way to a dog event, Kumori ran loose and was hit by a car. She continued to run off after the accident. A very kind lady, Judith, saw a dog running off No.1 Road, chased after Kumori in her car, and was able to capture her with the help of two gentlemen. Judith went back to Steveston Village in search of us while leaving her contact information with the dog parade organizer and everyone she came across. Upon learning that Kumori was hit by a car earlier, she immediately brought Kumori to the SPCA and then to the vet for a check-up. It was a bit like playing a blindfolded tag, as Kumori most likely lost her name tag with our contact information during the run. Her microchip also failed to be scanned, probably blocked by the sweater she wore that day. After reuniting with Kumori at the veterinary clinic, the doctors ran some tests on her and 16

only found her paw pads to be scraped, but nothing serious overall. This whole chain of events took us a while to piece together. We found out during our search and through Judith's experience that day, that many bystanders came to help, provided directions, and searched for our puppy. A man with his kid also picked me up from the road to help with the chase. We cannot imagine how many people got involved that day. We want to send our gratitude to those who helped us in any way that day. Kumori is now safe and happy at home with us. I posted a more detailed story of what happened that day if anyone wishes to read more about it via Facebook under the username Ccs Con. Happy New Year! Visitors to Steveston quickly discover what we all know and love about the area. It’s a gem of a location with its waterfront vista and extensive dyke trails, quaint shopping district stocked with one-of-a-kind shops, some of Richmond’s best restaurants, and a variety of museums to discover Steveston’s rich history. The Steveston Merchants Association is open to all Steveston businesses, together we are stronger. As an association, we are committed to increasing business for our membership. Help us make a difference. Members receive exposure through social media, magazine advertising, exposure on our website, awareness campaigns, crosspromotions, and shop local campaigns. The SMA’s annual events and contests are very successful in bringing the community together such as the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, Trick or Treating in Steveston Village, Girls’ Night Out, the Holiday Window Contest, and Christmas in Steveston Village.
We are the voice for our members regarding issues that affect the business community including parking, filming, signage, road closures, recycling, developments, bylaws, streetscape, and safety issues, through strong communication with the City of Richmond. We work closely with Tourism Richmond, the Steveston 20/20 Group, and are a member of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce. Your voice matters. Your ideas are welcome. All Steveston businesses are encouraged to join the Steveston Merchants Association. We invite you to get more involved by
