The Family Day long weekend is a holiday many eagerly await, especially after the long stretch between New Year’s Day and late February. The days are getting visibly longer (no more sunsets at 4:30 p.m.!), and daylight saving time will soon be here on March 10. School spring break (March 18 - 28) coincides with the arrival of spring on March 19, followed by the Easter long weekend starting on March 29. For the month of February, show your local neighbourhoods and businesses some love and you could win one of 15 Love Your City tote bags! As well, you will be entered for the grand prize of fabulous goodies from participating Vancouver BIA neighborhoods, valued at approximately $4,000! This new learning center will offer students from kindergarten to Grade 12 popular courses in Mandarin, Cantonese, and elementary math. Ray Serion, the owner of UBEcard Hobby Shop, located at 4335 Dunbar Street, has brought something new and nostalgic to Dunbar. His passion for cards and community sparked the inception of his business idea in 2021. It’s a one-of-a-kind shop on Vancouver’s west side, providing an opportunity for community involvement and offering a safe place for people to play and hang out. We are very pleased to welcome Scotiabank back to Dunbar. They held their grand opening on February 2 at 4402 Dunbar Street and will be hosting a Lunar New Year Celebration on February 17 at 11am - 12pm featuring a lion dance. The lion will begin the dance outside before going in to bless the offices. The community is welcome to attend! After a relatively warm winter, we eagerly anticipate the longer and brighter spring days. HEYNI EDUCATION-VANCOUVER: Courses Tailored for Your Child Story by Sarah Gordon

Heyni Education-Vancouver’s philosophy is rooted in the proverb “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” with a corresponding belief that the first step includes offering children quality and personalized Chinese education. Founder and director Zixin (Bella) Chen says, “The journey starts with simple, grounded steps, and success comes from continuous and relentless efforts. The two joined horseshoes in our logo represent the connection between different cultures and languages.” Heyni’s first centre opened in Richmond in 2022. Bella spent several years preparing to launch Heyni; she focused on educational research and educational technology products before accepting students. A new location is scheduled to open in Dunbar this year. Bella mentions, “Heyni is the partner of Fulbright Canada and an official HSK test centre (HSK Richmond).” 8
Whether you are interested in having your child learn Mandarin or Cantonese or boosting their Chinese reading skills, Heyni offers a variety of courses tailored for your child. The learning centre caters to students from kindergarten to Grade 12. Small class sizes ensure personal attention and practical learning. Mandarin, Cantonese, and elementary math are among Heyni’s most popular courses. The learning centre welcomes students of all language proficiency levels, whether new to Chinese or already speaking the language.
Classes are offered after school and on weekends. In addition, seasonal camps take place. “I established Heyni when my son was three

years old and my daughter was nine months old. They were our first students and helped me set up the classroom. Heyni has provided my children with a fantastic Chinese learning experience, enabling them to grow up in Canada while mastering the Chinese language, and has taught them how to communicate smoothly with their grandparents,” Bella says. She says, “The women in my family profoundly influenced my career choices. My mother was once a rural English teacher, and her life-changing experiences through education inspired her to bring more hope and possibilities to children in rural areas lacking educational resources. My grandmother also navigated tumultuous times with the foundation of a good education.”
Since 2009, Bella has been actively involved in Mandarin Chinese phonetics and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. She graduated from Chongqing University in China, majoring in broadcasting and hosting arts. She holds certificates in children’s broadcasting and hosting, first-level Mandarin proficiency, and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. “In 2018, Heyni became the world’s first integrated media Chinese education platform, integrating rich video educational content

with convenient mobile internet communication methods alongside traditional in-person education.” Bella says, “Heyni is a vertical institution in Chinese education, specializing in providing professional Chinese education for speakers of different native languages, including English, French, Korean, Japanese, etc. We specialize in various aspects of Chinese language learning, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation, and critical thinking, with different professional Chinese teachers.”

Classes include the Fun Chinese Graded Course. This comprehensive set of Chinesegraded courses covers learners’ varying stages, from beginners to advanced levels. Each level focuses on developing students’ listening comprehension, oral expression, reading skills, and writing abilities. The practical graded Chinese language courses’ curriculum helps students establish a solid foundation in the Chinese language while fostering improved proficiency in Chinese and English. The Yes Heyni Graded Chinese (Idioms) course combines fun, knowledge, history, and culture into one. Following the principle of starting with the easy and progressing to the difficult, this course uses age-appropriate stories and grammar based on the learner’s characteristics. It enhances children’s thinking abilities and cultural literacy. Storytelling draws from world-class picture book stories (Chinese versions) and mainstream Chinese cultural stories. This part of the curriculum focuses on improving students' Mandarin pronunciation skills and helping them understand the structure of Chinese words and sentences. Art and crafts encourage students to create and boldly unleash their imagination. The speaking and pronunciation course aims to help students improve the accuracy of Mandarin pronunciation through Pinyin, enhancing the standard and elegance of spoken Mandarin.

Exciting news and updates for
Dunbar Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness (DEEP) By Ann Pacey Hi Neighbours,
Our community-led effort to prepare and respond to an emergency has survived the COVID emergency measures and taken a huge step forward – we have a re-energized management team and have officially incorporated the Dunbar Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness Society, opening the doors for expansion and fundraising. This is the culmination of efforts by many, especially the founding members, who have worked very hard over the past decade to organize and sustain DEEP with the goal to build and strengthen Dunbar and the larger community's capacity to respond to and recover from disaster. Our purpose is to: 1.
Educate the Dunbar and broader community about disaster and emergency preparedness, so community members have the knowledge and skills to prepare for, respond to and recover from an emergency.
2.
Organize and maintain a Disaster Support Hub with trained volunteers, who in the event of an emergency will: a) serve as an information hub for City and Provincial updates; b) collect important information on local situations, needs and resources; and c) connect local people with needs to available support and resources.
Our core ‘Map Your Neighbourhood’ MYN program teaches 9 important steps to follow immediately after a disaster: first to secure your home and then to help your neighbourhood. And our well-stocked Disaster Support Hub container and location at the Dunbar Community Centre serves as a location for coordinating local response in the event of disaster - sharing information and organizing neighbourhood response in the event city resources are otherwise overwhelmed. Upcoming events are focused on education, with opportunities for training: Feb 20, 7 pm – Tsunamis in Georgia Strait - SFU Professor John Clague March 21, 7 pm - Earthquake hazards, identification and risk analysis – Tim Beale May - DEEP participation in the annual Emergency Preparedness Week, with a full DSH set up and training on the various roles, May 11. Presentations will be both in-person at Dunbar Community Centre and online. We welcome volunteers and look forward to seeing you at our events. Trading Memories, Collecting Legacies Story by Sarah Gordon

Speaking with UBEcard shop owner Ray Serion stirred up memories. As children in elementary school, my brother and I loved collecting, trading, and playing games to win hockey cards. Occasionally, a generous child would yell “Scramble!” and toss their unwanted cards; it was like treasure was falling from the sky. Ray has similar stories from his childhood growing up in Kerrisdale.

A lifelong collector, Ray has amassed hundreds of thousands of cards. During the early days of the pandemic, new hobbies developed when people had nothing but time on their hands. Sewing machines 20
“Cards that had been sitting in closets collecting dust became big again. Their value spiked. Cards that had been worth $200, in some cases, were inflated significantly by thousands of dollars. It was a matter of supply and demand,” Ray says.

Ray is concerned that social interaction is declining and wants to invest in faceto-face business. His vision was to make cards available to collectors for the tactile experience. “There’s nothing like it, from a hobbyist’s point of view, to touch them and kick the tires,” Ray says with a laugh. Whether you collect Pokémon, sports, or Magic: The Gathering cards, UBEcard is the place to find treasures that speak to every card collector. “From rare finds to sought-after classics, our selection caters to novices and seasoned collectors. UBEcard is not just about cards; we’re about the shared passion, the thrill of the game, and the delight of finding that perfect addition to your collection.” Soon after UBEcard opened last August, a fellow who had grown up in Dunbar but now lives abroad came into the store. As a child, he bought bubble gum hockey cards at a small grocery store that used to be two blocks

from Ray’s shop. He brought in two Wayne Gretzky rookie cards. Ray didn’t get a chance to handle the cards as they still needed to be graded, but he loves this full-circle story.

Ray says, “His rookie card is considered the holy grail of hockey cards.” Cards are sent for evaluation and grading, and their condition determines their worth. Cards can be worth anywhere from ten cents to tens of thousands of dollars. Ray is happy to teach people what collectible cards are worth and why. Ray has a Gretzy card that has been graded with a rating of 7/10. Another rare card is basketball player Michael Jordan’s 1986 rookie card. UBEcard has one in-store with a grading of 8/10. Ray’s tip is to collect what you like, whether a player or a sport, Pokémon, or Magic: The Gathering cards and from there, it becomes a hobby. Fifty percent of UBEcard’s business is Pokémon cards. The store hosts Saturday night trade nights for Pokémon cards, which receive good turnouts. UBEcard plans to dovetail with neighbouring business Sweet Somethings to use its storefront to host events starting in February. Ray is thrilled to provide an opportunity for community involvement and for people to have a safe place to play and hang out. This is an opportunity for card collectors to play certain games like Magic: The Gathering. Card makers sponsor these events, and there will be prizes.
