A Message from

Dunbar Village Business Association Welcome to the autumn issue of Dunbar Life! In addition to the ongoing pandemic, this summer we witnessed the immediate effects of climate change with unprecedented heat waves and wildfires. Let’s hope for some cooling rain to help get the fires under control as we prepare to head back to work and school. On the cover of this issue is Jeffrey Ho, owner of Blight’s Home Hardware. Blight’s has been part of the community since 1946. Jeffrey bought the business in 2003 and he also owns two other Home Hardware stores in Vancouver. Three years ago, he opened West Side Paint & Decorating, a Benjamin Moore store located two doors down from Blight’s. From fresh coats of paint to dripping faucets and garden projects, Blight’s is Dunbar’s go-to store for home projects. The well-stocked shop carries fans, air conditioners, leaf bags, heaters, sidewalk salt, soil, grass seed, fertilizer, and so much more! There is no need to search through a big box store when Blight’s has it all plus a team of knowledgeable staff who are always ready to help. Jeffrey has always been an enthusiastic contributor to his community and is an extremely experienced DVBA Board of Directors member. In this issue, please take the time to read about Rose Nails & Spa, a Dunbar Village salon at 3383 Dunbar Street since 2009. Tanya Dinh and her husband Thien Anh Quang are the owners and their staff are very experienced. This is a quintessential family-run business; Tanya’s mother My Dinh, her brother Kenny Dinh, and her niece Marble Dinh all work at the salon. They offer manicures and pedicures, waxing, threading, facials, eyelash tinting and perms, relaxation, and foot massages. Self-care is a wonderful way to de-stress! So many new and exciting things are happening along Dunbar Street! Pink Elephant

Café opened in the former Q Coffee location at 5601 Dunbar Street. It is a neighbourhood

cafe offering coffee, breakfast bites, soup, salads, grab n go hot and cold meals, smoothies, wine and beer. Next door, Urban Thai Bistro and Wine Bar offers a selection of traditional and authentic Thai dishes in a fresh and stylish new space. The Bank of Montreal moved to the large space where Vancity was located on the corner of West 28th Avenue and Dunbar Street. Construction has started on the new development in the 4400 block between Shoppers Drug Mart and London Drugs, as well as on the corner of West 39th Avenue beside H-Mart. Thirstyyy is a new convenience store that has opened at 3378 Dunbar Street. It can be found next door to Dairy Queen and carries food, health, and beauty products imported from Japan and Korea. Chicko Chicken, also located in the 3300 block of Dunbar Street, is almost ready to open their Korean fried chicken restaurant. I would like to take this time to warmly welcome the new owners of Sher’s Stationery 2000 but would be remiss if I didn’t note that the community will very much miss the former owners, Salim and Shirzad Jamal. Salim was a valued part of the DVBA Board of Directors and I know many of you became close to the Jamals as a result of the frequent trips to their postal outlet during the pandemic. Let’s keep the Dunbar spirit alive by continuing to support your local businesses—and each other. We’ll get through this together, and what a happy day it will be when things finally return to normal. As Dr. Henry has said many times, “Be kind, be calm, and be safe.”

BLIGHT’S HOME HARDWARE: In the People Business, Selling Hardware Story by Sarah Gordon

photos by Sandra Steier and Carolynne Palla

Jeffrey Ho’s dream was to own a hardware store and in the last 18 years, he fulfilled that goal threefold beginning with Blight’s Home Hardware. Originally from South Africa, Jeffrey arrived in Canada in 1987 where he lived for four years before heading back to Johannesburg to help with his family’s butchery business. Five years later he returned to Canada. He worked briefly as a web developer but lost his job when the company closed. After many months of job searching, he was offered a job at Hewer Home Hardware in Point Grey Village. This is when Jeffrey discovered his passion for retail hardware and his dream to operate his own business was born. He heard through the grapevine that Blight’s Home Hardware might be for sale and contacted Ted Blightt to ask for first consideration. His wish came true—Jeffrey purchased the store in March 2003. 8

Blight's Home Hardware has been part of the community since 1946. Harry Blightt and his father-in-law Jim Pulham were the founders. After Jim passed away, Harry Blightt operated the shop until Ted Blightt joined him; they ran the family business until 2003. The well-loved neighbourhood shop offers a wide selection of products. If something is not carried it can be special ordered. Jeffrey says, “We will go the extra mile for a vacuum bag or a special light bulb.”

“I get excited when I see opportunities.” In 2011, an opportunity arose to purchase Gandy’s Home Hardware on West 4th Avenue. In April 2021, the 75-year-old business was forced to move due to a rent increase; it is now located on West Broadway Avenue near Macdonald Street.

September 1 - November 15, 2021

www.DunbarLife.com

Jeffrey kept the name Gandy’s to honour the business’s rich history. Five years ago he opened his third store, Davie Village Home Hardware, and three years ago he doubled the size of that shop.

to see them back behind the counter soon. During their absence, Jeffrey’s daughter Lauren stepped in to assist store manager Michael O’Connell who has been with the business for eight years.

Running three stores keeps Jeffrey very busy, but a fourth opportunity knocked three years ago and he opened Westside Paint & Decorating, a Benjamin Moore store located two doors down from Blight’s where his entrepreneurial journey began.

All of his stores have thrived during the pandemic. Jeffrey believes it is because people have had more time on their hands while they have been cooped up at home to shop locally and undertake household projects.

“I am always looking to offer more to my clients.” Although each store has a manager, Jeffrey steps in right beside the staff, whether it involves ordering, serving customers, offloading trucks, or cleaning floors. He jokes in his warm South African accent that he has cleaned a lot of toilets over the years. He says, “No job is too small for an owner. I like to be involved and lead by example.” During the pandemic, his mother-in-law, Queenie So, and his long-term employees Merlin Pulanco and Jon Ellis stepped away from the business, but clients will be happy

www.DunbarLife.com

Jeffrey says, “It’s been such an interesting time. Support from the neighhourhood has been amazing. I can’t say enough about them. I am very thankful.”

From fresh coats of paint to dripping faucets and garden projects, Blight’s is Dunbar’s go-to store. This summer fans, portable and window air conditioning units have all been in high demand. In the fall and winter customers look for leaf bags, heaters, heating supplies, and sidewalk salt.

Jeffrey has increased his spring gardening department to include soil, grass seed, and fertilizer. The staff is always happy to offer lawn maintenance advice. In addition to selling traditional hardware store products, Blight’s also offers knife and scissor sharpening services. As well, light bulbs and batteries can be recycled at the store, and twenty-pound propane tanks can be exchanged. The store also accepts SodaStream CO2 cylinder returns.

10

One new service Jeffrey is particularly excited about is replacement transponder car keys and remote control replacements. Keys can be programmed in-store to provide customers with quality products at competitive costs. Being a small business owner has many rewards. Jeffrey says, “Customer service makes me happy. We are in the people business, selling hardware. People come for the experience Blight’s offers and to be acknowledged.”

September 1 - November 15, 2021

www.DunbarLife.com

The staff know many customers by name. Jeffrey comments, “It’s not all about the sale. We enjoy helping people solve problems. If we can’t help them we will direct them to someone who can. It comes back to helping others. The extra service we offer is what makes Blight’s special. When people experience this they return.” He adds, “Blight’s is a destination store. It is not conveniently situated in the centre of Dunbar. However, the north end of Dunbar Street is experiencing changes—some of the empty stores are filling up and we have good neighbours.” Being part of a small community inspires Jeffrey to give back. Blight’s has been a longterm sponsor of the Dunbar Little League and the Dunbar Lawn Bowling Association. He has been a volunteer board member with the Dunbar Village Business Association since 2008 and applauds the work they do for the

www.DunbarLife.com

community. When things return to normal, Jeffrey looks forward to the well-loved events such as the Dunbar Harvest Festival, Dunbar Village Trick or Treat, and Dunbar Village for the Holidays. The pandemic has been a difficult time for us all, but it has also served as a reminder that communities can rally together and become stronger if they support one another and their local businesses. Blight’s Home Hardware is a perfect example of a small business with a commitment to offering exceptional personal service that surpasses customers’ expectations. It is because of dedicated merchants like Jeffrey that Dunbar is a special place to call home. ROSE NAILS & SPA:

Everyone Deserves Some “Me” Time Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Carolynne Palla

Rose Nails & Spa has been one of Dunbar Village’s go-to nail salons since 2009. Eight pedicure chairs and two manicure stations currently accommodate customers during COVID times, however, two additional pedicure chairs will be reinstalled when things return to normal.

There have been some small updates since the salon opened 12 years ago; the couple added some new tables and chairs and repainted the space. Thien says with a laugh, “Customers may not notice. We chose the same shade of green because we really like it. I suppose we could have chosen another colour!”

Tanya Dinh and her husband Thien Anh Quang own Rose Nails & Spa. Tanya worked in nail salons for seven years and after a long search of Vancouver’s Westside, she was thrilled to find the perfect location on Dunbar Street to open her own business. She and Thien also own Pro Care Hair and Nails in Richmond where Tanya currently works. Tanya’s mother My Dinh, her brother Kenny Dinh, and her niece Marble Dinh work at the Dunbar shop.

Rose Nails & Spa is known for its customer service; close to ninety per cent return for the quality work provided. The salon’s friendly staff, comfy chairs, new equipment, and very reasonable prices are other reasons customers appreciate this business.

Services offered include manicures and pedicures, waxing, threading, facials, eyelash tinting and perms, relaxation, and foot massages. 18

The salon no longer offers acrylic nail services due to the strong chemicals used. Instead, they prefer shellac manicures; the semi-permanent gel polish speeds up the setting process, taking as little as 5 to 10 minutes to dry. Another key feature of a shellac manicure is it is easier to remove and gentler on nails. Rose Nails & Spa promises long-lasting manicures with proper care. A gel nail treatment will remain for up to three weeks while a regular manicure can last for up to two weeks depending on wear and tear.

September 1 - November 15, 2021

www.DunbarLife.com

A wall features a rainbow of polish colours to ponder over. The salon’s product of choice is OPI, which not only provides beautiful results but also has helped lead the industry in transitioning to newer, and “greener” formulations. They also carry the brand Luxio gel polish that is known for its durability while maintaining healthy nails.

Tanya and Thien take pride in their friendly staff and their focus on taking good care of their customers. Thien mentions, “Tanya’s mother was given flowers by one client. Customers appreciate her strong hands—she gives excellent foot massages.” Rose Nails & Spa is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The staff will generously stay after hours if needed. While many of their clients are female, they have seen an increase in male customers who now make up forty per cent of their business. Thien says, “Men enjoy coming in for pedicures and foot massages.”

www.DunbarLife.com

In addition to pleasing customers, the couple is thankful they own businesses where their family can earn a living. Family is extremely important to them. Originally from Vietnam, Thien and Tanya met in Vancouver in 2005. Tanya had moved to the city as an international student in 2000, hoping

September 1 - November 15, 2021

19

to find new opportunities and help support her family who remained behind in her homeland. With good fortune on her side, a company sponsored her, and she was able to stay in Vancouver. Thien’s father was one of the boat people who fled war-ravaged Vietnam in 1975. He sponsored his son’s move to Canada. The couple has five children ranging in age from two to 13, which keeps them very busy. Thien’s full-time job in information technology allows him to work from home and assist with the company’s bookkeeping. He and Tanya could not both work without the support of Thien’s parents who actively help the family.

20

The pandemic has been a challenging time for many businesses. Rose Nails & Spa’s staff look forward to the return of normal routines when they will once again see groups visit them in preparation for life’s big celebrations such as bridal showers, weddings, birthdays, and Christmas parties. Thien and Tanya are extremely grateful for their loyal customer base and to Dunbar’s merchants who have stood by each other. www.HigherGroundGardens.com GARDEN DESIGN IN AUTUMN Your garden has now put on a show beginning with late winter flowers, through spring’s uplifting blooms and bulbs, summer flowers and now, in autumn, you can take stock of how your garden performs year-round and make any design adjustments needed. Top Tasks for Fall Gardening • Add new grass seeds to thin areas of your lawn and water daily until established. September is the best month for this task, as grass seeds require air temperatures of 16 degrees or greater to germinate. Warm soil will encourage root growth. • Plant new shrubs, perennials, hedges and trees. Take advantage of the warm soil and plants will establish roots before the cold winter months set it.

• Install composted bark mulch on all garden beds. Fall is the best time to install bark mulch. The mulch acts like a blanket to protect roots from cold winter temperatures. • Apply lime to the base of fruit trees. Lime takes about 6 months to change the pH of soil and will be ready in time for fruit production in spring. • Hedge trim all hedges for a neat winter garden. Trim and prune hedges and shrubs before winter Best practice is to shape hedges of all varieties before mid-October. This will allow plants time to harden off. Shrubs and hedges can hold their shape for many months, getting you more value the earlier you trim in autumn.

Jessica Salvador is co-owner of Higher Ground Gardens, celebrating over 10 years of service in Dunbar. Higher Ground Gardens is going electric, using battery-powered hedge trimming equipment providing a quiet and environmentally friendly service.
