Rose Nails & Spa

Everyone Deserves Some “Me” Time

Rose Nails & Spa has been one of Dunbar Village’s go-to nail salons since 2009. Eight pedicure chairs and two manicure stations currently accommodate customers during COVID times, however, two additional pedicure chairs will be reinstalled when things return to normal.

Tanya Dinh and her husband Thien Anh Quang own Rose Nails & Spa. Tanya worked in nail salons for seven years and after a long search of Vancouver’s Westside, she was thrilled to find the perfect location on Dunbar Street to open her own business. She and Thien also own Pro Care Hair and Nails in Richmond where Tanya currently works. Tanya’s mother My Dinh, her brother Kenny Dinh, and her niece Marble Dinh work at the Dunbar shop.

Services offered include manicures and pedicures, waxing, threading, facials, eyelash tinting and perms, relaxation, and foot massages.

There have been some small updates since the salon opened 12 years ago; the couple added some new tables and chairs and repainted the space. Thien says with a laugh, “Customers may not notice. We chose the same shade of green because we really like it. I suppose we could have chosen another colour!”

Rose Nails & Spa is known for its customer service; close to ninety per cent return for the quality work provided. The salon’s friendly staff, comfy chairs, new equipment, and very reasonable prices are other reasons customers appreciate this business.

The salon no longer offers acrylic nail services due to the strong chemicals used. Instead, they prefer shellac manicures; the semi-permanent gel polish speeds up the setting process, taking as little as 5 to 10 minutes to dry. Another key feature of a shellac manicure is it is easier to remove and gentler on nails. Rose Nails & Spa promises long-lasting manicures with proper care. A gel nail treatment will remain for up to three weeks while a regular manicure can last for up to two weeks depending on wear and tear.

A wall features a rainbow of polish colours to ponder over. The salon’s product of choice is OPI, which not only provides beautiful results but also has helped lead the industry in transitioning to newer, and “greener” formulations. They also carry the brand Luxio gel polish that is known for its durability while maintaining healthy nails.

Tanya and Thien take pride in their friendly staff and their focus on taking good care of their customers.

Thien mentions, “Tanya’s mother was given flowers by one client. Customers appreciate her strong hands—she gives excellent foot massages.”

Rose Nails & Spa is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The staff will generously stay after hours if needed.

While many of their clients are female, they have seen an increase in male customers who now make up forty per cent of their business. Thien says, “Men enjoy coming in for pedicures and foot massages.”

In addition to pleasing customers, the couple is thankful they own businesses where their family can earn a living.

Family is extremely important to them. Originally from Vietnam, Thien and Tanya met in Vancouver in 2005. Tanya had moved to the city as an international student in 2000, hoping to find new opportunities and help support her family who remained behind in her homeland. With good fortune on her side, a company sponsored her, and she was able to stay in Vancouver. Thien’s father was one of the boat people who fled war-ravaged Vietnam in 1975. He sponsored his son’s move to Canada.

The couple has five children ranging in age from two to 13, which keeps them very busy. Thien’s full-time job in information technology allows him to work from home and assist with the company’s bookkeeping. He and Tanya could not both work without the support of Thien’s parents who actively help the family.

The pandemic has been a challenging time for many businesses. Rose Nails & Spa’s staff look forward to the return of normal routines when they will once again see groups visit them in preparation for life’s big celebrations such as bridal showers, weddings, birthdays, and Christmas parties. Thien and Tanya are extremely grateful for their loyal customer base and to Dunbar’s merchants who have stood by each other.
