Dunbar Village Business Association Message from DVBA President, Vicki Bell Welcome to Dunbar Life’s first edition of 2022! My name is Vicki Bell and I am the owner of Massage Therapy on Dunbar. I am thrilled to be leading the Dunbar Village Business Association’s Board as president. This year’s board has new and returning members and we are looking forward to another year of supporting businesses and promoting and improving the economic vitality of Dunbar. February began with the Lunar New Year followed by Valentine’s Day and the upcoming Family Day holiday. The pandemic continues but fortunately, all of the important numbers are trending downwards. We will soon be enjoying longer days when we turn our clocks ahead one hour on March 13. Spring break runs from March 14-25, and the first day of spring is March 20. Easter, a season of joy and reflection, arrives in midApril and by then we will be outside enjoying our gardens. As you can see from the photos on pages 22-23, Dunbar Village for the Holidays in December was a big hit with those who wanted to visit Santa. An enormous thank you to our gold sponsor, Save-on-Foods who generously provided their parking lot for this event as well as going out of their way to help with decorating and storage. Save-on-Foods also supplied hot chocolate for visitors and everyone had lots of fun trying their luck with their prize wheel. We would also like to thank Blight’s Home Hardware for the Christmas lights inside Santa’s tent.

We are excited to have Alisa Stephenson, owner of Alma Home & Vintage, on this edition’s cover. Alisa’s business is located at 4315 Dunbar Street and opened in September 2021. She carries vintage furnishings and handmade décor reminiscent of pieces often seen in home decorating magazines. The store’s unique and sustainable furnishings stand out from those found in big box stores and create an original living space that is distinctively personal. Unfortunately, Alisa had to close her business in January for renovations as a result of damage sustained from a passing truck. She is open once again and is welcoming customers back to her store. Also in this issue is an article on Gold Stop Shoes & Repair. The business has changed its name and owner, but customers can continue to count on expert repairs from shop owner Payam Tajabadi and his uncle Reza Jamshidian. The shop has been located on Dunbar Street for more than 40 years. Dunbar Village is happy to welcome Zahid Mahmood, the owner of Dunbar Mart which opened recently next to Starbucks. Zahid sells everything you might expect at a convenience store in addition to a great selection of English and European candy and drinks. I am pleased to tell you that Zahid’s business will be featured in the next edition of Dunbar Life. After a winter of vicious storms, heartbreaking floods, and a few snowstorms, we are eagerly looking forward to the longer and warmer days of spring. Get ready to tune up your bicycle, get out in the garden, and enjoy this beautiful neighbourhood of ours. Thank you for continuing to support your neighbourhood businesses by shopping locally.

ALMA HOME & VINTAGE: Goodbye Fast Furniture, Hello Vintage Finds Story by Sarah Gordon

photos submitted

Alma Home & Vintage is a newly opened shop in Dunbar that carries vintage furnishings and handmade décor reminiscent of pieces often seen in home decorating magazines. From attention-grabbing mirrors to vibrant Moroccan rugs, these unique furnishings stand out from those found at big box stores and create an original living space that is distinctively yours. Alisa Stephenson is the founder of Alma Home & Vintage which began in her heritage home on Alma Street. She operated her business online for two years, and then took the leap when she saw the vacant Dunbar Street storefront which was formerly Enmark Jewellers. Alisa opened the storefront in September 2021. 8

“I have always had a passion for creating a nice space on a budget.” She started out buying for herself and then started collecting and selling. When asked how she resists keeping great finds for her own home, Alisa laughs and replies, “I’ve collected quite a few for myself including a treasured arched mirror over my fireplace. Now I will often just take a photo of a favourite piece and I find that’s enough.” One-of-a-kind pieces are sourced throughout the Lower Mainland where she visits auctions, estate sales and thrift stores. The store’s well-curated and ever-changing collection changes from week to week with a focus on items from the 1960s to 1980s.

February 15 - April 15, 2022

Some memorable and sought-after items include a Wassily leather chair and a rattan plant holder divider. Alisa also notes, “The ‘80s are back in style; anything rattan seems to get snapped up quickly.” She adds, “Whether you are creating a focal point in your space with statement furniture or finding that special memento to complete your curated vintage look, we are here to assist you in finding just the right piece for you.” Alisa loves to see customers’ photos of their acquisitions in their homes. “It makes me happy to see how they’ve styled their purchases and how creative people are.” December was a very successful month for Alma Home & Vintage. In addition to furniture, the shop sold Christmas décor such as wall advent calendars, Bohemian stockings and tree skirts which are designed in-house and can also be found on the Etsy site AlmaHomeVintage.etsy.com. On New Year’s Day 2022, a freak accident impacted her business. A fire truck’s snow chains snapped, hurtling an air cylinder straight into the storefront which caused windows to shatter, left holes in the walls and destroyed products. Alisa reflects, “We got through it, luckily no one was injured, and we’re so happy to be back up and running! We are so grateful to our community and the support we’ve received during this challenging time, both in Dunbar and online.”

www.DunbarLife.com

A love of travel is one source of inspiration for this entrepreneur. She says, “Travel has always been a big part of my life. In my early 20s, I worked as a travel agent and had the privilege of exploring the world. Against the backdrop of so many beautiful sights, I was always drawn to pieces that told the stories and rich histories of local cultures and traditions—from dressers with ornate French detailing to geometric floor cushions from Thailand.” “As I began bringing a little piece of my travels home with me, I was able to create a one-of-a-kind, joyful space in my home with these carefully curated keepsakes. Little did I know, this would blossom into what is now Alma Home & Vintage.”

February 15 - April 15, 2022

When the pandemic ends, Alisa dreams of travelling to Turkey and Morocco to purchase rugs. To view some of the gorgeous area rugs she has brought into the store you can visit Alma Home & Vintage’s Instagram page.

Alisa is passionate about stylish and sustainable living. “Everything we purchase has an impact on the environment. Unlike fast furniture, vintage and handmade decor are often built to last. By choosing Alma Home & Vintage, you can feel good about breaking the cycle of sending more to the landfill,” Alisa says. Sustainability, versatility, and affordability are key reasons vintage furniture and handmade decor have grown in popularity over the years. Alisa loves to help customers create a unique space in an environmentally friendly and budget-conscious way. She believes there is a growing movement towards making environmentally conscious purchases. “People are thinking of buying second-hand wherever possible instead of big box brands. A lot of my friends are part of this second-hand movement and are mindful of their purchases, whether it is furniture or clothing,” she says.

10

Another way you will give Mother Earth some extra tender loving care comes directly through every purchase made at the store; Alma Home & Vintage donates to One Tree Planted, a non-profit environmental treeplanting charity. Alisa feels right at home in Dunbar. She has made some nice connections with residents and merchants. She says, “It is extremely satisfying when people tell us they are glad to see us here and doing this in Dunbar.”

PROTECT PETS FROM HARMFUL PLANTS Many have added a furry member to their households, and we are hearing about nasty vet bills when the puppy chews on plants. Consider removing the following plants from your garden: • • • • • • •

Hosta Peony Euphorbia English ivy Cyclamen Tulips (the bulb portion) Lilies

Plants We Love To Hate Never plant these in a Vancouver garden. • Bamboo. This aggressive spreader should never be planted, no matter what you are told about a “clumping” habit. We have witnessed many a dispute between neighbours due to

the destructive and invasive power of this one plant species. Plant a yew or cedar hedge instead. Trust me. • Japanese snowbell tree (Styrax japonica). This lovely flowering tree will test your patience with its army of seedlings. Enough said. Provide Wildlife with Food and Shelter Caring for big, old trees is as important as planting new ones. As a custodian of the trees on your property, be sure to have an annual pruning regimen to keep trees healthy and free of dead, diseased or damaged branches. Use dormant oil spray in winter to control insects if needed. Keep a wide circle of mulch around the base of trees to prevent grass from hogging all the water and nutrients. Water your trees during drought months. This in turn will provide food, shelter and a place for wildlife to raise their young.

ASK AN EXPERT:

What do I need to know about gold jewellery? 1. Please explain the different types of karat gold used in jewellery. Karat is a measurement of the ratio of the purity of “fine” .999 gold to other metal alloys and it is based on a 24-part ratio system. Certifying its standard, your jewellery may be stamped “kt”, “K”, or as a percentage of millesimal fineness such as “750” for 18kt, “585” for 14kt, or “417” for 10kt, and the makers trademark or hallmarks. For example, with fine gold: 24 kt = 24 parts gold 22 kt = 22 parts gold + 2 parts alloy 18 kt = 18 parts gold + 6 parts alloy

14 kt = 14 parts gold +10 parts alloy 10 kt = 10 parts gold +14 parts alloy 9 kt = 9 parts gold + 15 parts alloy

2. What makes gold jewellery white or rose in colour?

Naturally yellow, gold can be alloyed to alter the colour. Essentially, rose gold is created with a copper alloy, white gold with nickel or palladium, and green gold with a silver mixture.

3. Why am I allergic to some white gold but not to yellow gold? White gold using a zinc or nickel-based alloy (also used in costume jewellery) may cause an allergic reaction, unlike the inert palladium alloy, and rhodium plating is also helpful when used as a barrier. Alloy mix in yellow karat gold and sterling silver are usually not problematic. Very rarely are there reactions to fine gold and silver. Platinum and palladium are hypoallergenic.

4. Can I use my old gold jewellery, diamonds and gemstones to recreate new jewellery? Yes usually. We can also supply new diamonds and gemstones to match and add to yours. Yellow gold with little to no impurities can be reworked beautifully into a new signature piece. White gold when remelted can create porosity and cracking, and rose gold when remelted can become brittle, so it is not recommended. Karat gold cannot be re-alloyed to standard to transform it into another colour without refining it. However, unusable gold can be applied as credit towards a new piece. We invite you for a complimentary assessment and design consultation. E. & O.E.

GOLD STOP SHOES & REPAIR: A Family Trade Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Carolynne Palla

Gold Stop Shoes & Repair is the new name for this Dunbar mainstay business where customers can continue to count on expert repairs from shop owner Payam Tajabadi and his uncle Reza Jamshidian. The business has been located on Dunbar Street for more than 40 years and has changed locations and ownership several times, yet the demand for a skilled cobbler to mend one’s favourite pair of shoes has stayed constant. Reza has worked in the industry for more than 30 years and was employed at the shop before his nephew purchased it. In addition, he owns several other shoe repair stores in Vancouver. He and Payam have been working together since 2015. 18

Reza and Payam continue the tradition of old-world workmanship. Payam moved to Canada from Iran in 2010. He says, “My uncle encouraged me to pursue this career. I learned the trade in Iran 15 years ago. The only way to learn this trade is on the job. I have been working in the industry ever since. My dream to own my own business came true when I took over this store in 2019.” “I chose to change the name of the store from Gold Star Shoe Rebuilders to Gold Stop Shoes & Repair to mark this milestone in my life as a new business owner.”

Payam recommends purchasing quality shoes with leather bottoms and good heels and to get them to put on rubber soles to extend the shoe’s longevity. Gold Stop also specializes in colour restoration. With proper maintenance and a few simple steps such as basic cleaning, conditioning (with special lotions or creams), shining and waterproofing, your footwear will last you for many years.

The store is known for its climbing and hiking boot repairs. Gold Stop goes the extra mile with their specialized refurbishing of heavy-duty footwear. Behind the scenes, the cobblers work with a factory-style press which few repair shops invest in. Regular boots and

shoes are also mended, along with leather jackets, belts, and purses. The shop also offers knife and scissor sharpening services. In addition to shoe repairs, Gold Stop also sells new shoes. The shop also carries Canadian-made leather wallets and handbags, speciality socks, laces insoles, shoe care products and more. Payam is busy in all areas of the shop; he manages, orders and of course repairs shoes. The nephew and uncle team get satisfaction from giving shoes a new lease on life. Their hard work pays off when happy customers say, “Wow! I am really amazed by the work you have done.”
