Publisher's Note The holiday season has arrived! This December is like no other we have known, and expectations weigh heavily on 2021 to offer us a turning point in the pandemic. Huge sacrifices have been made as we’ve been forced to alter our lives and the way we conduct business. And while there has been frustration amidst the uncertainty, there have also been so many kind and caring acts as people are looking out for each other. There is so much to be grateful for. The Steveston Merchants Association has had to cancel the annual arrival of Santa by boat, his visits with children in the Cannery, and the classic car cruise around the village. Holiday magic is alive in Steveston — take a stroll and enjoy the storefronts that have been decked out for the Holiday Window Contest. Adding to the festive ambience, the City of Richmond will install extra Christmas lights and the Cannery is hosting the Steveston Festival of Trees. Songs in the Snow is going virtual this year! Get your free or by donation tickets now, and you'll be sent the Zoom link the day of the event so you can listen to the performances. Congratulations to the winners of the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl! The grand prize of $1,000 was awarded to Laara’s Vacuums’ spectacular family of scarecrows. See the winners' photos on pages 32-33. A Monkey Tree Emporium: Nineteen Years and Going Strong Story by Sarah Gordon

A Monkey Tree Emporium has been a destination for shoppers for close to twenty years. Owner Odile Gagne opened her business in March 2001. The shop’s name stems from the artificial plants and trees she originally sold. Odile says, “I liked the fun name, and to accompany it I wanted to carry entertaining products to make people laugh.” Over time, A Monkey Tree evolved to sell home
décor and gifts, and as the store grew it moved locations three times. The original storefront was located on First Avenue between Moncton and Bayview Streets. After nine years on First Avenue, an opportunity arose to relocate to Moncton Street. “I was very happy I did. Five years later, I wanted to expand. As luck would have it, right at that time almost double the square footage became available across the street. I said to myself, it’s now or never. The timing was perfect,” says Odile.
“A Monkey Tree is a lifestyle gift store with a little bit of everything. It’s like a mini department store.” Odile Gagne 8

Odile says, “We carefully select products and support local artisans whenever an opportunity arises.” A Monkey Tree is the only Richmond store that retails internationally renowned Vancouver artist Sid Dickens’ Memory Blocks. After purchasing one, you may quickly find yourself becoming a “Sid” collector. From Salt Spring Island, Cedar Mountain Studios’ art blocks beautify any room. Manufactured in Kelowna, Barefoot Venus makes body care products with eye-catching retro packaging. Bonus, the products smell as fabulous as they look. Stocking stuffer alert! Canadian company Tru Earth’s Eco-Strips offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional liquid and powder laundry detergent in a sheet format.
Creativity plays a big role in the store’s success. Odile says, “The creative component is everything from buying to merchandising, window displays, and participating in community events. It was so rewarding last

year when we won the Steveston Merchants Association’s Scarecrow Crawl.” After the event, the prize-winning owl scarecrow was donated to The OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society in Delta.

Kelly Krull The holiday season is upon us. Odile says, “Every year we love transforming the store, starting with our Christmas themed window. Inside the shop, you will find festive decor, Christmas trees filled with ornaments, and locally made condiments including my own apple jelly from trees in my garden. Throws, scarves, and cozy socks make you feel warm and at home. Everyone is in a happy mood and it makes the ambience even cozier.”
The most frequent comment Odile and her staff hear is “A Monkey Tree always has new products. It’s so great!” She adds, “Loyalty has been established over

the years. Some customers stop by periodically while others come in every week, even if it is just to take a peek as part of their morning walk.” Approaching twenty years in operation is a milestone for any business. Odile says, “What I find most rewarding is being supported by an amazing community that has shopped here since day one. They have helped me grow the store. Now some of their kids shop here. How fun is that?” Kelly Krull, the store’s manager, has been with A Monkey Tree for almost three years. Odile credits her as being a great addition to the shop. Kelly manages the front of store duties while Odile focuses on working behind the scenes. Rounding out the team are Emilie Roberston, Sierra Louie, Victoria Mul, and new addition MacKenzie Hughes.

2020 has been a challenging year for all business owners. To keep customers and staff safe, customers are asked to sanitize upon entering and wear a mask. She remarks, “Should the pandemic get worse, A Monkey Tree’s website is available for curbside pick-up. We are ready to FaceTime and shop for you — just call us and we can arrange everything, even a delivery. We encourage people to continue to shop locally to support a vibrant and strong Steveston village.”
She shares, “Many locals don't have cars, and one day a customer came in to ask if we sold kettles and unfortunately we don't, but Kelly went out and bought one. The customer was thrilled and the next time she encountered Kelly in the village she shouted out, “There is Kelly Kettle!” and that's how new friendships begin, by helping each other.” “Steveston is such a special place where you know all the faces. People respect and look out for each other. It’s home. That’s why going the extra mile comes naturally,” Odile concludes.
Being part of a small community offers merchants the chance to establish special relationships with their clients. Case in point, Odile recalls an example of Kelly going the extra mile for a customer.

Fine Thai Cuisine on Steveston's Waterfront Story by Sarah Gordon

Baan Lao means 'our home' in Thai. Proprietor and Executive Chef Nutcha Phanthoupheng chose the name to make guests feel welcome and at home in her soon to open restaurant located on Bayview Street. Born in Thailand’s countryside region of Isaan,
Nutcha was raised living the ‘farm to table’ experience; her family grew rice, vegetables, and fruit, and raised buffalo, pigs, and chickens. As a child, she learned how to fish and forage for mushrooms, wild honey, insects, and lizards. Her family cooked together using the fresh, natural, organic ingredients that she had collected. Nutcha’s love of traditional Thai food originated as she cooked by her mother’s side. As a former registered nurse and cancer researcher, Nutcha respects the impact food and food sources can have on health and wellness. Everything she prepares is made with pure, fresh, organic ingredients, and whole foods. After moving to Vancouver in 2014, she longed for the taste of the authentic food she grew up with and sought a way to express both her love of traditional Thai cooking with her creative side. Encouraged by her husband, Nutcha began pursuing her passion to become a professional chef.

She returned to Thailand, where she took private cooking courses with chef Chumpol Jangprai, the Iron Chef of Thailand, and the only two Michelin star Thai chef in the world. She continued her training under chef Vichit Mukura, who served the Thai Royal family, and now has his own restaurant that is celebrated with a coveted Michelin star.
Nutcha’s goal is to become one of the first Thai women to obtain a Michelin star, just like her mentors from Thailand. “We knew Steveston was the ideal location to open a business and raise our young children due to its mesmerizing scenery; it is a quaint and charming community. When we learned it was crowned the winner in CBC's Search for Metro Vancouver's Best Neighbourhood it reaffirmed our intention of situating Baan Lao in Steveston village,” she says. Nutcha comments, “We would like to present our treasured guests with a culinary journey to ignite their five senses by offering an abundance of unique, harmonious, balanced flavours, using fresh organic and natural ingredients both locally sourced and from reputable, sustainable farms in Thailand, complemented with the warmth and Thai hospitality of our
team, and beautiful wine curated by our Master Sommelier, Pier-Alexis Soulière.” All food is made from scratch including the sauces. Coconut milk is pressed on the premise using fresh organic coconuts, which is used for curries. The restaurant’s Pad Thai noodles and spring roll pastry are freshly made from organic rice. Abbotsford-based Sumas Mountain Farms is the supplier of the restaurant’s poultry, beef, chicken, and duck. It is the only 100% certified organic and SPCA-certified "grass-fed and finished" beef producer in the Lower Mainland. “For our herbs, herb wall, and indoor herbal roof garden, we partnered with local company Nutrigreens. We use only Omega Nutrition organic sunflower oils for frying and deepfrying. We hand carve the fruits and vegetables,” Nutcha says. She adds, “Our indoor garden is hydroponic. We will grow a mixture of lettuce, herbs and micro greens, and we will sell living lettuce and micro greens picked fresh from our wall and roof for customers to take home.”

Design Work Group and engineers Claire Lee and Alex Lee of Leeson Engineering, Inc. created the restaurant space to feel like home. Baan Lao is situated overlooking the beautiful Fraser River. Inside the restaurant, plants from HappyGrün help to naturally purify the air. The elegant partitions assist to promote physical distancing between tables. In addition, the luscious greenery, which is protected by plexiglass between, creates a sense of peace and serenity. Two enormous custom-made chandeliers illuminate the interior — they weigh 350 pounds each, with a diameter of 16 feet and feature 120 hand-blown glasses.

A Thai elephant named Suda was commissioned to paint four paintings to adorn the south wall of the restaurant. Nutcha comments, “The elephant painting by Suda was an amazing experience. It took us three plane transits and stops, plus an hour car ride to see her paint. It takes a special elephant to concentrate, think and paint, and all four paintings we commissioned were different. We could tell that she enjoys painting. She is an old soul with years of inspiration and innate creativity.”

The goal to become one of the best restaurants in North America meant choosing cream of the crop consultants. Branding expert Elena MacGregor designed Baan Lao’s logo and branding. Her portfolio includes the awardwinning design of Vancouver’s 2010 Olympic logo. Business consultant Jose Monteiro has over 40 years of hospitality experience serving the world’s elite and luminaries at leading hotels including The Sutton Place and Hyatt Regency. A name familiar to many Stevestonites, restaurant consultant Ken Iaci has opened and managed many reputable restaurants in his 40 years of experience. “Our guests will enjoy the eye-catching presentation of our food, have their taste buds captivated by the depth and layers in the flavours, and revel in a variety of unique special touches that will make their evening memorable,” Nutcha says. Reservations are required to experience Baan Lao’s fine dining dinner menu, which features nine exquisite courses featuring 13 delectable dishes. You will be transported on a culinary adventure through Thailand during the twohour meal. The preparation and intricate presentation takes the talented kitchen team December 2020 - January 2021
hours to assemble combined with a high level of service. The team at Baan Lao also recommends making reservations for the fine dining lunch, however, they will accept walk-ins if seats are available. The take out and to-go menu are also made from organic and natural ingredients. The price point is affordable and lower than the fine dining dinner and lunch menu. As the restaurant opening draws near Nutcha remarks, “I am feeling elated, excited, and exhausted, yet at ease.” She concludes, “Steveston is a harmonious multicultural community filled with warmth, and natural surroundings. 50th Wedding Anniversary Party: Finding the Silver Lining Story and photos submitted Steveston residents John and Eileen Perez recently got quite a surprise. On Saturday, October 10 this active and involved couple was getting ready to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a small family dinner. Originally, they had made plans to celebrate this milestone with a big bash surrounded by many friends and family. Then the pandemic struck and they had to cancel everything, including a visit from their son living in the States. For a pair who love social and family connections more than anything and who cherish their many lifelong friends that surround them, the decision to cancel was heartbreaking. But there was a silver lining! What could have been a very subdued and quiet day turned into an unforgettable outpouring of love and kindness. While John and Eileen’s two daughters took them out for a small celebratory lunch, their grandchildren and sons-in-law decorated their home with balloons, banners and set up a VIP tent on their Moncton Street patio. To clear the way for the main event, the City of Richmond placed “no parking” signs along their street. As they returned to their home, John and Eileen laughed and cried as they started to notice the decorations that took over their home. Soon after, they were surprised by the sounds of honking horns and smiling faces, as a drive-by celebration headed towards them. Led by a cruiser from the Richmond RCMP, the parade saw an endless line of decorated cars and cheering well-wishers. So many kind-hearted people showed up that the line of vehicles was several blocks long. In a further show of

community support, the parade ended with the sirens and flashing lights of a Richmond fire truck. While it may have seemed that COVID-19 was going to take away a celebration of a remarkable milestone, the community and family rallied to deliver what will be remembered longer and with more fondness than any ‘normal’ event.
Now, more than ever, it shows that community matters and that caring and kindness still exist. Congratulations John and Eileen and thank you Steveston!
