Publisher's Note Spring is here! The days are getting longer, the sun is shining, birds are singing, and cherry trees are blooming. We are filled with hope that our lives will return to a more familiar state now that the COVID-19 vaccines are being administered. Easter weekend leads us into the month of April. Mother’s Day and Victoria Day follow in May. Although events are still on hold, there will be a new exhibition at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery NHS called “Waves of Innovation: Stories of the West Coast.” There are also new self-guided walks on all three of the Richmond Public Art Trails located in Steveston, Richmond-Brighouse, and Richmond Oval. Are you cleaning up your desk after income tax time? The Rotary Club of Steveston is hosting another Shredding Event on May 15 at McMath Secondary School as a fundraising effort to continue helping people in need in the community. A by-election will be held on May 29 to fill the City of Richmond’s councillor vacancy. To boost local tourism, Tourism Richmond has launched the Pacific. Authentic. We look forward to these new businesses opening soon: Bosley’s, Cocoru Beer & Chicken, Five Roads Brewing and Village Curry, which replaces Lotus Coconut. Steveston is an amazing community with great people and that is what makes patio season even more special. Being able to sit safely in the fresh air and wave to our friends will be delightful. Puppies are everywhere and we have captured some on the boardwalk to share with you. Here’s to the start of a new and delightful season!

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER What does it cost to size my ring? The ring sizing process is not always straight forward. We’d first like to take a look at your ring in person and have the opportunity to meet you. When you bring in your ring for sizing we determine not only the new size you need, but maybe as importantly, we take a close look at the setting itself. Any sizing puts a certain amount of stress on your gemstones and their setting, so for safety and durability, if the setting is worn out it may need to be repaired in addition to sizing. Your ring might need to have claws re-tipped or loose stones tightened. Some gemstones can’t tolerate any heat and have to be expertly protected during ring sizing or necessary repairs. When you bring your treasured ring to us, we determine the type and purity of the metal, your correct size and whether the ring requires any essential restoration work beyond the sizing.

STEVESTON SPOT PRAWNS & SEAFOOD: Hooked on Fishing Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted

Steveston fisherman Justin Taylor got his first taste of fishing when he and his father would travel the B.C. coastline in search of salmon. Much of the time they travelled in a caravan of boats with his father’s friends; the majority of them were Nikkei fishermen from Steveston who also had their children on board. He recalls, “The thrill of the chase while gillnetting salmon and the camaraderie that went with it is what got me hooked on fishing and still fuels my drive and passion towards all the fisheries I am currently involved with. Even as a boy I remember valuing the idea of getting paid based on the performance of the boat, promoting hard work, and cultivating a hunger for the catching and the strategy involved to do so.”

“Fishing became part of our culture and way of life at a young age.” Justin Taylor 8

Justin is the founder of Steveston Spot Prawns & Seafood and he is also the skipper of the vessel Just Travlin’. Skipper Quinn Morimoto and crewman Yoshio Sakiyama join him. Kris Robinson and Mike Stylianou round out the crew. The skippers have 19 years of experience in the commercial spot prawn, Dungeness crab, salmon, and herring fisheries.

Justin, Quinn, and Yoshio are all third-generation Steveston fishermen. Justin’s great grandfather, Yoshimatsu Nishihama, was a fisherman from Mio, Wakayama, Japan who immigrated by boat to Canada’s west coast in search of more bountiful fishing and a better life. He settled in Steveston where Justin’s grandfather Shigeharu Nishihama was born in 1914.

April - May 2021

His grandfather followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a second-generation Nikkei fisherman. He was interned in a prisoner of war camp in Ontario and lost his two fishing boats. In spite of this, he persevered and re-established himself as a Steveston fisherman. “Unfortunately, I never did get to go fishing with my grandpa or even share in any of his fishing stories. However, I was fortunate that my father’s family emigrated from Saskatchewan to Steveston, where he met my mother and made a lot of friends in the fishing community. He would eventually join many of his friends in becoming a commercial fisherman, giving me

the experience and opportunity to carry on a Steveston tradition,” says Justin. Yoshio Sakiyama’s grandparents Kumataro and Aiko Sakiyama were 19 when they came from Japan to Steveston and then were sent to an internment camp. Yoshio’s father Allan Katsuji Sakiyama was a commercial fisherman his entire life until the day he passed away. Yoshio recalls, “As kids we spent a lot of time with him in the net shed, collecting lead while he worked. He knew everyone; it seemed we never made it very far without stopping to chat with everyone in Steveston.”

Quinn Morimoto’s grandfather was a fisherman from Wakayama, Japan.

Evelyn Kuit, Paula Morimoto, Tony Morimoto, Michael Sakai, and Brianna Stylianou.

He mentions, “My late uncle Bobby Morimoto was my true inspiration. He was a fisherman from a young age and then went on to become the founder of Steveston Seabreeze Adventures. Uncle Bobby was the first person I went salmon fishing with in the Fraser River. We shared a passion for fishing and it is because of him that I am a proud fisherman today."

Sales manager and team leader Brianna Stylianou comments, “I developed a passion for fishing years ago. Quinn would take my family fishing and would be very detailed at explaining the roles of a skipper, deckhand, and so on. I was amazed by his knowledge of the sea, the weather, and staying safe. I admired all of the fishermen’s hard work and dedication in preparing for each fishery. Days spent at the dock I met so many local people and loved hearing stories about what Steveston means to them, about their past family members who were fisherman but most importantly how they planned on feasting on their spot prawns later that evening.”

“Being a fisherman is who I am, it’s in my blood. I have had a passion for the sea since I was a child.” Quinn Morimoto Steveston Spot Prawns & Seafood was formed in 2010. The sale of live, locally caught spot prawns directly off the boat to customers began in 2016. In addition to live spot prawns, the company also fish for wild catches of Dungeness crab and salmon when available. A team of friends and family assist with the sales operation at the dock including Tara Doi,

10

Each morning, before 5:00 a.m., the boat leaves port and steams to their fishing grounds from the Gulf Islands to the Sunshine Coast, providing access to pristine and bountiful ocean conditions to fish for spot prawns. The fishermen begin hauling their traps promptly at 7:00 a.m. Wild-caught live spot prawns are harvested with baited traps set at depths varying from 180 to 480 feet from the fishing vessel.

StevestonInsider.com

April - May 2021

Trap by trap, their catch of spot prawns is immediately placed into a live tank with conditions similar to that of their natural environment. This includes minimal light and aerated water, chilled down to a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, and balanced appropriately for salinity (salt) levels. By minimizing the amount of time the prawns spend out of cold clean water, they remain vibrantly alive - ensuring the highest possible quality of this organic, healthy, and protein-rich delicacy.

The livelier the spot prawns are, the fresher they are, and the better they will taste when you bring them home to enjoy! From a fishing perspective, the spot prawn season is a short and intense wild fishery. With its high initial outlay of costs (license leases, bait, gear, fuel) it can be a risky venture and adds a lot of pressure to be successful. It is exciting from a consumer perspective since live B.C. spot prawns are only available for purchase for $20 per pound or less during this short fishing season. The rest of the year, live spot prawns are imported from the United States and typically cost over $30 per pound. Understandably, customers want to get their fill of this delicious local product at a reasonable price while it lasts. It is not uncommon to see line-ups along Fisherman’s Wharf at the beginning of the season. April - May 2021

This year sales will take place from the fishing vessels Dual Venture and/or Just Travlin’. The boats will be moored at Fisherman’s Wharf and will be marked with Steveston Spot Prawns & Seafood signage. The boats will be moored from the beginning of spot prawn season, which will begin May 26, 2021, at the earliest, (stay tuned for the government announcement on the official opening date) until mid-October which marks the end of the Dungeness crab season. Live spot prawns are available for purchase every day during the short 30 to 40 day season beginning at 6:30 a.m. until they sell out. Crab sales hours will be announced closer to the start of the season (June 16, 2021). The season generally runs from mid-June to early October. Subject to healthy and harvestable stocks, Sockeye salmon are sold from August to early September. Hopefully, this will take place again in 2022. Chum salmon and Chum salmon roe are sold from late October to mid-November. All seasons and harvests are determined by government assessments on stock abundance and therefore the ability to harvest sustainably. Steveston Spot Prawns & Seafood’s off-season is from December until the herring fishery in early March each year. December and January are spent on vessel and fishing gear repair and maintenance, year-end paperwork and administration, and time for the fishermen and staff to spend time with their families. February is spent preparing for the herring fishery.

Like all businesses, Steveston Spot Prawns & Seafood developed and adhere to strict COVID-19 protocols based on provincial health guidelines. As a team, they have diligently followed these protocols to ensure the utmost safety of their products and the environments in which they have been harvested and sold to consumers. During the pandemic, people have been spending much more time preparing meals at home, resulting in an increase in spot prawn sales. The company promises to do its best to catch and sell as many spot prawns as possible to fill the demand.

“Being able to provide our delicious locally wild-caught seafood products directly from the ocean to appreciative customers in a sustainable manner and the pride that comes with it is so rewarding. It is incredibly satisfying to earn a living doing something we love, based on the performance of the team and the boat and care for the product, while preserving the history, culture, and way of life of the fishing generations before us from our home town and port of Steveston,” he concludes. Follow Steveston Spot Prawn & Seafood’s Instagram and Facebook pages for updates about wait times at Fisherman’s Wharf, recipes, and pre-order information.

The rewards of working in this industry are greater than Justin ever imagined.

On Feb 19, 1973 Dr. Doug Nielsen welcomed his first patient into his dental practice. When Dr. Doug Nielsen was accepted into UBC Dental School in February 1968, he knew that he would open his future dental practice back home in Richmond. His family had moved to Richmond in 1949 and he realized by 1971 that Steveston was changing rapidly and was going to continue to grow and develop. He approached his classmate, Dr. Bob Jamieson, and he was on board with building a clinic in Steveston. Dr. Doug remembers standing with Bob on the vacant lot, looking west at the cabbage fields and saying “Every one of those cabbages will someday be a house filled with a family.”

PERFECT HEARTS YOGA: A Room With a View Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos submitted

After a tough past year, 2021 is proving to be an exciting one for Perfect Hearts Yoga. Belinda Llewellyn is thrilled to announce her business has relocated from its former location in a garage behind The Juice Truck on First Avenue to its new larger home on Bayview Street. “We love the new space with its big bright views. The studio is larger and we now have a bathroom! We used to have to use The Juice Truck’s facilities, which we couldn't even use after COVID-19 hit,” Belinda says. She admits it was emotional letting go of the First Avenue studio that people had grown attached to, but the new second-floor location that overlooks the village, the mountains, and also offers a waterfront view quickly won her over. Renovations have transformed the studio into a light, airy space with a new touch of retro chic.

Belinda says with a laugh, “This is a wonderful new perspective and ambience from our previous alley vista.” 26

Perfect Hearts was heavily impacted by the pandemic; it had to close for seven months last year. Belinda comments, ‘When we were allowed to open again in July before the second wave of COVID-19, like many businesses with which we sympathize, we were only able to admit less than fifty percent of our regular attendance per class. At the same time, some people were understandably nervous to attend classes. It was a very difficult time for the studio. We gave online classes a shot, but they didn’t take off.”

“With the opening of the new studio, we are now focussing on in-person classes, which we have all been missing so much.” Belinda Llewellyn Belinda is accustomed to dealing with adversity. In 2007 she was hit by a car, which sent her flying across two lanes into oncoming traffic. She landed on her face resulting in lost teeth and a shattered ankle. She spent the better part of two months on the couch followed by a few

StevestonInsider.com

extra months wobbling about. Before the accident, she had been a chef’s apprentice but when she tried returning to work she found it was too much for her ankles to handle. With time on her hands, she took up yoga. She explains, “Yoga helped me with my posttraumatic stress disorder which I suffered from as a result of the accident. It also helped me regain my strength. I fell in love with yoga.” She was a graphic designer for 15 years but got tired of the nine-to-five lifestyle and sitting in front of a computer every day. Looking for a change, she took her yoga training in January 2009 while continuing at her job. When her parents decided to build a house in Belize she went along to assist them and ended up staying for a year. It was during this time she opened her first yoga studio. After returning to Canada she heard through the grapevine that a Steveston yoga studio was for sale and seized the opportunity to purchase it. Perfect Hearts Yoga’s first location opened in January 2012. “There are many different styles of yoga, some of which are better suited for a particular season in our lives. There are many benefits to a regular yoga practice. It promotes a healthier lifestyle with both the physical side of things and the emotional. Also, most people in a regular practice start to make healthier diet choices,” Belinda says.

Students can practice the lengthy poses of Yin yoga to soothe the body's connective tissues, participate in energizing flow classes, or opt for a calming candlelit Hatha class. Instructors cater to all experience levels and will guide students through modifications to allow them to ease up on a pose or allow them to go deeper.

Perfect Hearts was voted Best Yoga Studio in the Richmond News’ 2020 Best of Richmond. She and her staff look forward to welcoming new and returning students to the Bayview Street location. New members are eligible to purchase an eight-week pass for $99. Belinda feels extremely grateful for her loyal clients and her team of eight teachers. She remarks, “All have different things to offer and we are lucky to have them.” She concludes, “Getting back to yoga in the studio can help many people who are experiencing stress return to a routine that they were used to before the pandemic. Our clients are very grateful that we have pushed through despite the forced closures and difficulties.” Perfect Hearts Yoga 3800 Bayview Street, #201 Richmond, BC V7E 4R7 Telephone 778-984-9642 www.perfectheartsyoga.com

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER Do I need to have special protein if I start exercising this spring?

Definitely. As our body ages beyond 30, there is a natural decline in our muscles. This leads to decreased metabolism, mobility, balance, and tone. Exercise, especially resistance training, will add further stress and increase the normal break down of muscle tissue as part of natural turn-over. Hence, you must provide the body with the appropriate mix of essential amino acids to rebuild and strengthen your muscle, or risk subsequent damage to your muscles and joints. “Essential” amino acids, 9 in total, must be obtained through your diet. It is ideal if you can get these from whole food sources such as lean meats and tofu, but supplementing with a reputable and Health Canadaapproved product can ensure that you hit the proper balance. Innovite’s “MuscleRescue” is such a product. It is an all-natural, lactose-free, gluten-free blend of vegan amino acids, with a superior amino acid ratio than you would find in a typical whey protein. MuscleRescue was designed to preserve and increase muscle tissue growth. Available at Pharmasave Steveston Village, along with other Innovite and integrative wellness products and programs.” 30

If you received the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB), no taxes were deducted from your benefit while taxes were withheld at source from the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB), the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB), and the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB). In either case, if your 2020 Taxable Income was below $75,000 and you file your return by April 30th, the CRA will automatically apply interest relief on your balance owing until next year’s filing deadline of April 30, 2022. Like many others, if you worked from home during 2020, even without receipts you can claim Employment Expenses of $2 per day up to $400 maximum if you worked 50% of the time from home for at least 4 consecutive weeks. If your employer issued you a T2200S declaration form, you will be able to, under the Detailed Method, claim eligible expenses such as rent, utilities, internet, cell phone, and office supplies.

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER Does gel polish ruin your nails? Gel polish itself doesn’t ruin your nails. Nails get ruined by improper removal of gel polish or even by the client peeling the gel off themselves. Improper removal of gel polish will remove a layer of your nail plate, resulting in weak and brittle nails. Many nail salons use the “soak off” method which is fine as long as the technician is patient and does not scrape the nails with a cuticle pusher to speed up the process. Just remember that no permanent damage can be caused to your nail plate unless there is trauma to the matrix (the nail matrix is the area where your fingernails and toenails start to grow). A new nail will take about 3 to 4 months to regrow completely. Many think regular nail polish is a safer option for their nails, however, regular polish and nail hardeners are not without fault, as they often contain formaldehyde.

Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site Society Receives Provincial Funding to Restore Historic Slipways This February, the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site Society was awarded $310,000 from the Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program (CERIP) – Unique Heritage Infrastructure grant program. This funding will support the restoration of the historic slipways in the 130-year-old shipyard building at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. Restoration of the slipways will enable the site to bring vessels into the shipyard building for repair and display. “We are pleased to contribute to the completion of this exciting project. Being able to use the slipways will allow us to have boats in the shipyard building for the public to view. This is a central part of experiencing a shipyard site and has been missing at Britannia for many years. Watching boats be hauled off the Fraser River with a winch from 1901 is an unforgettable experience for anyone,” said Andy Hobbs, Chair of the Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site Society. The Society gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. The funding is part of B.C.’s $10 billion COVID response through the unique Heritage Infrastructure stream of the CERIP 32

program. Heritage B.C. joins the Province of B.C. in offering the single largest funding program supporting B.C.’s unique heritage infrastructure in 68 communities. The restoration project will involve hiring experts in marine equipment and restoration to rebuild and make functional the boat cradles and chalks, multi-block system, sheaves, cables and winch in the East and West ways of the Shipyard building. Care will be taken to use original materials and components while ensuring the system is safe to haul up large vessels well into the future. Situated on the banks of the mighty Fraser River, Britannia Shipyards is a rare collection of historic buildings representing the community that flourished in Steveston during the heyday of fishing over a century ago. Echoing the stories of fishing villages up and down Canada’s West Coast, the site shares the history of the thriving fishing and boatbuilding industries and the diverse people and extraordinary river that supported these industries from their beginnings to present.
