Does gel polish ruin your nails?

Gel polish itself doesn’t ruin your nails. Nails get ruined by improper removal of gel polish or even by the client peeling the gel off themselves. Improper removal of gel polish will remove a layer of your nail plate, resulting in weak and brittle nails.

Many nail salons use the “soak off” method which is fine as long as the technician is patient and does not scrape the nails with a cuticle pusher to speed up the process. Just remember that no permanent damage can be caused to your nail plate unless there is trauma to the matrix (the nail matrix is the area where your fingernails and toenails start to grow).

A new nail will take about 3 to 4 months to regrow completely. Many think regular nail polish is a safer option for their nails, however, regular polish and nail hardeners are not without fault, as they often contain formaldehyde.

Products with formaldehyde often make nails brittle and more likely to break or peel.
