Where do you start if your parents need care?

There have been numerous articles in the national press detailing a lack of knowledge around the care system and what support is available to people in need of care. If your parents are at the stage where it is clear they need care, it can be a fearful, isolating time in which you are not sure which way to turn or who can help you. Many questions will need addressing, such as ‘Do I need to be looking at residential care homes or is there a way mum and dad can stay at home?’ or ‘Are there options of support with the funding of their care?’ People may have lived in their homes for over 40 years and still be an active member of the community, whether it be from supporting the local church or charities, to regular book clubs or coffee mornings with friends and neighbours. reduce the independence and choices of those involved. Even if you are a full time carer yourself, you may be eligible for respite care funding, which would allow you to have a break and time for yourself, in the knowledge that a fully experienced team would be supporting your parents in your absence. The good news is that there are many more options than you might think. Genuine Care may be able to help you and your family with detailed knowledge on what care package might be right for you, as well as what support with funding could be available. In some cases care packages can be fully-funded, Most importantly the choice is always yours: Genuine Care’s core values are to maintain our client’s independence through person-centred care. We tailor our care packages to your needs and wishes and understand that they can change week by week, with them.

The Edenbridge Magazine • September/October 2019

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, Welcome to issue 102 of The Edenbridge Magazine, another busy issue to bring you all the latest events taking place in and around the area. Don’t forget that if you are organising any local community event, you can publicise it for free in the What’s On pages of the relevant issue. I’m always delighted to hear from you and help support your events. 6,300 copies are distributed by Royal Mail direct through doors so it’s a great way to raise awareness of what you are doing. As well as free content for not-for-profit groups in the magazine, I also give discounted advertising to the same groups as well. I haven't been out and about as much as usual over the last couple of months as I've been on the other side and have been preparing for one of the big events that I am involved in (regular readers will know how much I love being involved in our fabulous local community). The first coming up is the Edenbridge Motor Show (read more on page 16) which takes place on Sunday 8th September. I'll be on stage again (I have been given my own mini-stage next to the main stage) where I will be conducting interviews and reminding visitors of all the attractions and other useful information throughout the day. Until I moved to Edenbridge over 15 years ago, I never would have imagined I'd be doing such things. Moving to the area has really changed my life and I'm loving it! I want to take this opportunity to let you know that the landline number for the business will shortly be unavailable as I am in the process of moving my office to a new location where there is no landline. I’ve been amazed to learn about all the alternative options for receiving fast broadband without a direct phone line and would like to give a shout out to JK Comms Ltd (www.jkcomms.com) for looking into this and sorting out for me. In this day and age the importance of having a landline for businesses is not the same as it was even a few years back. So, if you wish to speak to me about getting content into the magazine or advertising, please call on mobile (listed below) or drop me an email. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. The next deadline is Friday 4th October for the November/December issue which will be distributed during the last week of October. Until next time...

Feature: Edenbridge Motor Show & Music Festival Now in it's fifth year, the Edenbridge Motor Show and Music Festival is almost here. Organised by volunteers of the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce and with great support from members of the community and local organisations. The introduction of the official Musical Festival part to the show last year was a HUGE success and the headline act, Some Kinda Wonderful featuring the Noel McCalla & Derek Nash Band is going to be even more amazing as they perform two sets on stage. Opening the show at 10am are the Edenbridge Town Band joined by the Forge Singers to get this moving, followed by The Victorious River Band and Don't Ask The Band. This year the main stage has been renamed in memory of one of our Chamber of Commerce members, Paul Dashwood, who also coordinated all the music at last year's show as well as performing with his band, Don't Ask. Sadly Paul passed away earlier this year so in hour of him all our musical performances will be taking place on the Paul Dashwood Stage. Paul Dashwood performing at last year's Motor Show with Don't Ask The Band

NEW to the show this year is a giant inflatable children's park and the popular Mud Monsters are back giving rides to visitors. Of course all the usual trade and craft stalls will be in attendance, as well as the food zone which includes a bar provided by Godstone Brewery. It wouldn't be a motor show without the hundreds of vehicles that turn up from individual exhibitors to car clubs, motorbikes to camper vans. There really is something for everyone's taste. My personal favourite is the MX5 Drivers Club :-)

I thoroughly enjoyed being MC for the day at last year's event and I'm delighted to be invited back on stage again this year. From here I'll be keeping visitors up to date on what's happening, telling you how to join in and vote for your favourite displays and interviewing some of our performers and exhibitors . There still is time to apply to exhibit your vehicle/club - simply go to the website www. edenbridgemotorshow.co.uk and download an application form. Entering for the display area is free if booked in advance. Tickets can be purchased on the day at £5.00 per adult and under 14s go free if accompanied by an adult. Date: Sunday 8th September Time: 10am until 6pm Venue: Gabriel's Showground, Mill Hill TN8 5PL Website: www.edenbridgemotorshow.co.uk

Feature: Genuine Care Homecare Services Outstanding domiciliary and live-in care

Genuine Care Homecare Services was started in 2008 by Kathy Maslen following a long career working in the care sector. She became disillusioned with the industry and felt that companies were more worried about invoices than they were people. Kathy wanted to create a company which reflected her own values and passion for care. Over the years this local firm has grown from strength to strength to meet the needs of an ever ageing population who require care at home in order to live well and remain in their own homes. Genuine Care's services include domiciliary and live-in care and as well as covering the local Edenbridge area, their clients stretch from North West Kent and East Surrey to London and the South East. Genuine Care provide person-centred packages, ensuring their clients are treated with dignity and respect. All enquiries are reviewed on an individual basis to ensure the correct amount of time is allocated to be able to meet the needs of the clients who will be receiving care. Kathy and her team's passion for delivering outstanding care is evident in her lastest CQC Inspection Report where she is rated as Outsanding in 3 areas and Good in 2 areas - so you can be rest assured of the quality and standards of care delivered by the team. The report includes overwhelming feedback from people, relatives, health and social care professionals, commissioners and staff. CQC also state that the Genuine Care staff are well trained, highly caring and competent.

Going above and beyond seems to be what Kathy does best. When you meet her, her enthusiasm for care is infectious - she was recently at the Houses of Parliament where she has been campaigning for care sector workers to receive recognition as skilled workers (currently they are not). Kathy has received industry awards for her services and ethics, including the 'Putting People First' award, part of the Great British Care Awards.

She is also a member of a Parliamentary Review panel so she can input into and vote on bills which go through Parliament. Genuine Care are always on the look out for more staff to meet the demands for their services. As long as you have a passion for making a difference to people's lives, they will support you through the training process - no experience is required. You will also have the opportunity to gain qualifications whilst you are working and also develop a career in the care industry. Genuine Care has recently been expanding their premises in order to launch a new drop-in facility for people to come to and find out more about options for providing care for either themselves or family members and finding out what support is available and how to apply for it. Care for the elderly can be such a minefield - a facility like this will help so many understand better what is out there. To find out more, contact 01732 866 627 or visit www.genuinecare.co.uk or visit their office - 139 High Street, Edenbridge, TN8 5AX

Feature: Edenbridge Untapped sourced from: Kent, Surrey and Sussex and that are not widely available in the local area. Richard (co-owner) said that “We will be bringing you drinks that cannot be sourced in local Supermarkets and off licences. I believe our key to success is to continue working with small craft producers, which in turn will enable us to provide our discerning customers with high quality products and hopefully introducing them to new styles and tastes". Five years ago three local business owners met whilst being part of the organising committee for the Edenbridge Motor Show. These three (pictured above): James Kemp (Well Kempt Gardens), Richard Williams (Blackdog Microsystems) and Sam Thurston (Kent Heating Solutions) found that they worked together well and, most importantly, got along as friends. Despite being busy with their own jobs they decided to start a joint management company – Thunderstruck Events, going on to organise the successful ‘Edenbridge Uncorked’ Food and Drink festival. It was whilst indulging in their joint passion for good food and drink that they decided to do something with their newly found contacts and open a specialist drink retailer in Edenbridge High Street. This seemed a perfect fit alongside the food festival and other future projects to bring new things to the town. Hence, ‘Edenbridge Untapped’ was born. Untapped aims to showcase only carefully selected craft: Beer, Cider, Wines and Spirits,

Edenbridge Untapped already have some great working relationships with local artisan producers such as: Greensand Ridge Distillery, Godstone and Titsey Breweries, Kent Cider Company and Hush Heath Wines.

They continue to work hard at bring on new stock. For instance, this week, alongside best sellers such as Henderson’s Rhubarb Cider, they are stocking Sparking Mead from the excellent Marourde Winery based near West Malling. Richard goes on to say “We will be showcasing at least one new producer each week, so there will always be something new to try. We do also realise that parking and access in Edenbridge can be an issue, so, Edenbridge Untapped is offering a free local delivery service on orders over £50. As we currently stock around: 50 Ales and Lagers, 20 Gins and Spirits, 20+ ciders alongside local wines and soft drinks, there is something for everyone. Why not pop in, say hello and chat to our friendly and knowledge team." 115a High Street, Edenbridge TN8 5AX www.edenbridgeuntapped.co.uk
