The Edenbridge Magazine • November/December 2019

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours, I can't believe how quickly we are approaching the year end! I also can't believe that the major disruptions I've been experiencing outside my house might also be coming to an end soon...I'll have to see it to believe it though. Living on Station Road for the past 14 years has been quite an experience but I think these last works have definitely been the most challenging! Of course the Station Road/Four Elms Road junction also forms part of the procession route for the Edenbridge Bonfire Parade, taking place this year on Saturday 2nd November. It's going to be another amazing spectacle with more floats than we've seen in previous years. The big question of the moment is, who will be this year's Celebrity Effigy? The official unveiling of the effigy takes place on Wednesday 30th October and you'll see it announced via social media (@edenbridgebonfire). I love the way our event attracts media attention from all over the world to find out who has chosen and I'm so proud to be a volunteer with the Edenbridge Bonfire Society. In fact, prepare for a very busy November this year as there are lots of events taking place in the area in preparation for Christmas (see page 20). I'm delighted that the Edenbridge Community Christmas Association have organised another event for the whole town to enjoy, taking place on Saturday 30th November. They did a tremendous job last year with bringing a Christmas event back to the town and I'm sure that they will see the event as well supported and talked about as it was last year. Organising any event of this size is not an easy task and all the volunteers who get involved, not just in this but in any of our big events, give up so much of their time but do it to bring something to our wonderful community. It's not just the months ahead which are going to be busy but the months which have just passed us were also equally as busy. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce PLUS all the volunteers who helped out at September's Edenbridge Motor Show and Music Festival. This was the sixth year of the Motor Show and it was another major success and another event I was delighted to be part of again. This year the main stage was dedicated to Paul Dashwood, an active member of not just the Chamber of Commerce but the local community in general. One of my favourite moments of the day was seeing his son, Ollie Dashwood, playing his father's guitar on stage with Paul's band, Don't Ask the Band. 16 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk

Where do you start if your parents need care? There have been numerous articles in the national press detailing a lack of knowledge around the care system and what support is available to people in need of care. If your parents are at the stage where it is clear they need care, it can be a fearful, isolating time in which you are not sure which way to turn or who can help you. Many questions will need addressing, such as ‘Do I need to be looking at residential care homes or is there a way mum and dad can stay at home?’ or ‘Are there options of support with the funding of their care?’ People may have lived in their homes for over 40 years and still be an active member of the community, whether it be from supporting the local church or charities, to regular book clubs or coffee mornings with friends and neighbours. reduce the independence and choices of those involved. Even if you are a full time carer yourself, you may be eligible for respite care funding, which would allow you to have a break and time for yourself, in the knowledge that a fully experienced team would be supporting your parents in your absence. The good news is that there are many more options than you might think. Genuine Care may be able to help you and your family with detailed knowledge on what care package might be right for you, as well as what support with funding could be available. In some cases care packages can be fully-funded, Most importantly the choice is always yours: Genuine Care’s core values are to maintain our client’s independence through person-centred care. We tailor our care packages to your needs and wishes and understand that they can change week by week, with them.

I was given a new lease of life as MC as this year, for the first time, I had a roving mic so I could mingle with the crowds and do on the spot interviews, including one with Charlie Grima, one of the drummers from 70s rock band 'Wizard'.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my advertisers who alerted me to a recent scam that had happened to them when they were targetted by scammers claiming to be working with me on my magazines. They were offering advertisement upgrades or chasing outstanding payments from them and trying to take money. Please can I remind all my advertisers to be vigilant and only make payments in the usual way or directly with myself when paying for advertising. As I'm nearing the end of my editor's note, I'd like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year, your support and feedback for the magazine is always much appreciated. I'm sure I'll be bumping into many of you at the upcoming Christmas events taking place locally. If you're new to the area then I'm sure you will enjoy being part of this wonderful, vibrant community. As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. The next deadline is Friday 29th November for the January/February 2020 issue which will be distributed during the last week of Decmeber. Until next time...

Feature: Edenbridge Community Christmas Association

"1st December 2018 saw us host our first Christmas Extravaganza in Edenbridge High Street following a year of very hard work setting up the Association and organising numerous fund raising events and seeking grants from various local established groups and charitable causes. The first year was made possible by a huge amount of personal effort from the ever-expanding committee together with the financial donations made by Edenbridge Town Council, The Great Stone Bridge Trust and Edenbridge Bonfire Society.

enthusiasm to continue with this event and we have been working throughout the year to again raise funds to improve the Christmas Lights and enhance the actual event on the day, to be held this year on Saturday 30th November 2019. The Association are volunteers who provide their time for the benefit of the community giving up weekends and evenings to plan, prepare and organise the event. There is a huge amount of background work required to allow these types of event to take place. This year we have received financial support from Kent County Council, The Great Stonebridge Trust, Edenbridge Town Council and The Rotary Club of Edenbridge & Westerham, plus various individual donations.

Such was the effort by the team to provide a fun filled day for the local community, we were nominated by Edenbridge Town Council to be recognised in the Sevenoaks District Council “Making It Happen” award scheme. We were thrilled to be included in the final held in St Nicholas Church in Sevenoaks but although we did not win our group we were award with a Certificate of Achievement of which we are all very proud.

Improvements • Renovations • Alterations

The success of the day, and the recognition by the community of the effort put in by the committee, has provided us with the

Kitchens and Bathrooms installed

Last month we held our first Quiz Night which in addition to the public donations made earlier in the year for the Christmas Lights through our Facebook page plus the raffle held at Uncorked has meant that we have been able to renovate the old lights and purchase some new ones, which will all appear at various locations in the High Street. We look forward to seeing you again this year on Saturday 30th November 2019 for another fantastic day."
