Where do you start if your parents need care? There have been numerous articles in the national press detailing a lack of knowledge around the care system and what support is available to people in need of care. If your parents are at the stage where it is clear they need care, it can be a fearful, isolating time in which you are not sure which way to turn or who can help you. Many questions will need addressing, such as ‘Do I need to be looking at residential care homes or is there a way mum and dad can stay at home?’ or ‘Are there options of support with the funding of their care?’ People may have lived in their homes for over 40 years and still be an active member of the community, whether it be from supporting the local church or charities, to regular book clubs or coffee mornings with friends and neighbours. reduce the independence and choices of those involved. Even if you are a full time carer yourself, you may be eligible for respite care funding, which would allow you to have a break and time for yourself, in the knowledge that a fully experienced team would be supporting your parents in your absence. The good news is that there are many more options than you might think. Genuine Care may be able to help you and your family with detailed knowledge on what care package might be right for you, as well as what support with funding could be available. In some cases care packages can be fully-funded, Most importantly the choice is always yours: Genuine Care’s core values are to maintain our client’s independence through person-centred care. We tailor our care packages to your needs and wishes and understand that they can change week by week, with them.

The Edenbridge Magazine • January/February 2020

Note from the Editor... Dear Neighbours,

***Happy New Year*** I hope you all enjoyed the festive season and are feeling raring to go for 2020. I always like to spend the first couple of weeks of the year getting myself organised after the Christmas period as there just never seems to be any time in the run-up to Christmas to get anything done. It's not just the preparations for Christmas that keep me busy but also the amount of super events we have taking place which I just have to go to. I think a few readers noticed my TV/radio appearances in November as I am the official spokesperson for the Edenbridge Bonfire Society - a position I thoroughly enjoy. It was unfortunate that this year we had the very strong winds on the night and even at the press unveiling of the celebrity effigy, John Bercow, his head blew off! Pictured right is the Bonfire team putting his head back together. It certainly made for an additional talking point with the press! November also saw the second Casino Night organised by the Chamber of Commerce. This time the venue was the Edenbridge WI Hall, always a favourite of mine as it's within walking distance from home! A good fun evening was had by those who attended and prizes were awarded for the most amount of chips won. The Chamber are looking at holding more of these fundraising events in the future so keep an eye on their website - www.edenvalleychamber.org.uk - for details of future events which are for everyone to come along to. Another successful event organised by the Chamber was the popular French Market held in the Market Yard Car Park. The weather stayed dry and, as always, the event was well supported by the local community. Even Teddie dog (pictured) enjoyed herself and she certainly enjoyed all the delicious food smells from the stalls as I couldn't get her to look at the camera! Now I've covered November, I'll move on to the local December events. The most notable of course being the Christmas event in the High Street. The Edenbridge Community Christmas Association did another amazing job of bringing together the local shops, stall holders, entertainment, food and of course organsing the installation 16 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk

The Edenbridge Magazine • January/February 2020 of the new lights to add to the current sets already in the High Street. You could barely move for people and the build up to the big switch on was great fun (Santa was held up for a few minutes, perhaps he got caught up in the Station Road traffic lights?). A huge well done to the small committee who organised the afternoon, it really is wonderful having a Christmas event back in the town centre.

My final thought for this issue is to remind readers of the Eden Valley Loyalty Card Club where you are rewarded for shopping locally. New cards have been made up for the scheme which are now available at the participating retailers. You can find more information on page 32. If you're a local business and you would like to join the scheme, visit the Chamber website - www. edenvalleychamber.org.uk/loyalty-card. If you're part of a local group or organisation then don't forget, you can include details of your events in the What's On sections for free - simply email me the details. I also run free community features (in this issue you can find out more about the Dandelion Café at BRIDGES on page 28). As always, please do mention ‘The Edenbridge Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. If you'd like to have a chat about advertising or anything else to do with the magazine, just give me a call. The next deadline is Friday 31st January for the March/April 2020 issue which will be distributed during the last week of February. Until next time...

Edenbridge Lodge: Have you ever thought about joining the Freemasons? Have you ever thought about becoming a Freemason or wondered who they are? Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. Our local group, Edenbridge Lodge No. 7462, was formed 60 years ago by a few prominent men in Edenbridge and today's members come from all backgrounds; some retired, others employed or self employed but all with a desire to give something to the group. They range in ages from late 20s upwards but the group recruit from 21 years and above. Edenbridge Lodge meet formally 5 times a year on Monday evenings between October and March. They also meet up informally on intervening Monday evenings and hold larger social events throughout the year.

Says member Darren Bryant, "It's more than just a group of friends who meet regularly, it's a brotherhood. It's great to have the opportunity to visit other Lodge's as well as receive visitors back to our Lodge." Being part of the Freemasons provides you with the opportunity to enhance your skills in areas such as public speaking, organisation and confidence building. If you are interested in learning more about Freemasonary or Edenbridge Lodge in particular, the group would love to hear from you. Website: www.edenbridgelodge.org.uk Email: marsh121@btinternet.com Tel: 01892 822 910 If you are part of a local charity or organisation and looking for funding, you can apply to the Warren Meadows Charitable Trust, set up by the Edenbridge Freemasons, by writing to: Michael Jenner, 23 The Plat, Edenbridge TN8 5BL.

Feature: Dandelion Café at BRIDGES

One is never too old to have fun, dream or make wishes the attendees to and from the café each month, especially in organising a wheel chair accessible vehicle. Michelle would love to be able to organise a vehicle with a driver on a regular basis to help.

The Dandelion Café is the creation of local resident, Michelle Redgrave-Moore, as a response to the need for a safe, inclusive nonjudgmental environment for older adults. Michelle wanted to create a safe, personcentred environment with activities to help promote wellbeing for older people, as well as providing a good, nutritional meal. With her plan outlined, she sought funding to get the Dandelion Project off the ground. This year funding has been received from Kent Community Foundation and the Great Stone Bridge Trust. Held once a month at the BRIDGES Centre in the High Street, Michelle is joined by her team of volunteers, some who are her students from the Tobias School of Art and Therapy in East Grinstead, family and friends, who come along and help with serving and clearing lunch as well as the running of the sessions and activities. The café provides a social environment for attendees and the activities are designed to be as inclusive as possible for everyone, with support from the volunteers when required. The café has now been running for 18 months and Michelle is always looking at how the cafés could be improved. The activities are chosen by the members to truly deliver a café that they want to attend. The maximum capacity of the café is 20 in order to ensure high ratios of volunteer and care support

I attended the Dandelion Café in November and was so impressed with the efficiency of the organisation. The layout was perfect to allow attendees to socialise with one another, and the transformation from turning the area from a dining room into an activities room by the volunteers was so quick and efficient. We also had visitors from Hever Pre-School joining in for an intergenerational activity and a sing song. For me, seeing some of the wonderful services we have going on here makes me wish my mother (who has Dementia) lived closer as I would love to bring her along to this wonderful café - I know she would enjoy it and the environment would not be daunting for her. Although Michelle receives funding to run the cafés, attendees also make a contribution of £15 per month to help cover costs. If you would like to come along to a future café, please get in touch with Michelle by calling 07976 431 786 or visit the website www. dandelionproject.co.uk. Booking into any café is essential so please do not just turn up. The Dandelion Café runs on the first Wednesday of the month from 12.45 until 4pm. A 2-course lunch is served before the activity session and an afternoon tea is provided before the café closes at 4pm.

As you can imagine, it takes a lot of work in organising each of the sessions and the main issue Michelle faces is transporting 28 | www.edenbridge-magazine.co.uk • info@edenbridge-magazine.co.uk

Marsh Green Goes Gold

The little Victorian church in its lovely village setting on the green has a long history of caring for the planet and the people that live on it. This has just been recognised by the awarding of Gold Eco-church status (the United Reformed Church’s first Gold Eco-church). What does this mean? As a church and as individuals the aim is to put care for the environment high on the priority list. The congregation aims to be carbon neutral. The church generates electricity, uses rainwater for toilet flushing, has its own nature reserve with a wildflower meadow to improve habitats for wild life, runs eco-events and encourages everyone, children and adults, to be as ‘green’ as possible. This includes lobbying politicians and working with the Sustainable Edenbridge Group in the town. - Gill Musgrove – Marsh Green Church Eco-group co-ordinator
