Fundraising in 2019 at Dawson Hart As 2019 comes to a close, we reflect on another successful year of fundraising for a deserving charity. This year the firm has been raising money for Hospice in the Weald, a charity which offers free care 24-hours a day, to patients with a terminal illness and support to their family, friends and carers. To help raise funds, we have been hosting events throughout the year, such as an Easter Egg Hunt, Barn Dance and a Quiz Night! Colleagues at Dawson Hart have also dressed down in the office, baked yummy treats and taken part in a 10k run! We are proud to announce that we raised £5,142.12 for Hospice in the Weald which is the result of the dedication of staff, friends, family, clients and local businesses who have come together to support this amazing charity. We would like to thank everyone for their support this year – we could not have done it without you! We are pleased to reveal that our charity of the year for 2020 is SUSSEX SUPPORT SERVICES! Please check our website to keep updated on future fundraising events! From everyone at Dawson Hart – we wish you all the best for 2020!

The Crowborough Magazine • January/February 2020

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers,

***Happy New Year*** I hope you all enjoyed the festive season and are feeling raring to go for 2020. Have you made any resolutions for the new year ahead? I always set myself a few goals and try to be realistic with what I want to achieve. It’s always very satisfying to be able to tick off the milestones as I move forward to reach each goal. I like to spend the first couple of weeks of the year getting myself organised after the Christmas period so the foundations are set for a good year ahead. As always, there is plenty going on in and around the area. Maybe you’re thinking of getting out more and making new friends? There are so many vibrant clubs and organisations around which you’ll find listed in the magazine (listed on pages 20-22), there really is something for everyone. Over the years I have met up with quite a few of the groups and have always had a good time. From flower arranging to fishing, I’ve got to try quite a few new things myself. Take a look and see what tempts you! This year we have an extra day in our calendar as of course it is a leap year! I just like the thought of having another 24-hours to get more things done :-) I wonder if we’ll have any leap day babies in the area? I’d love to hear from any readers who do. Maybe there are a few romantic ladies out there planning on proposing to their significant others? I would like to do a leap year special feature in a future issue so please email me, info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk, to share your leap day joy and include a picture! In the last issue you might recall The Crowborough Players ran a competition to win family tickets to their pantomime ‘A Christmas Carol’ which was held at the Community Centre last month - the question was ‘What was the first pantomime the Crowborough Players performed at the Community Centre?’ Well done to everyone who got the answer correct, it was Cinderella. Congratulations to Lorna Marter and family who won and I hope you all thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I’m delighted to inform you that the popular Crowborough Expo will be back on March 31st 2020. Organised by the Crowborough & District Chamber of Commerce, it gives local businesses the opportunity to meet and engage with potential clients and suppliers as well as to network with like-minded people. The event is also open to the general public who will have the opportunity to speak to local businesses and find out more about the services operating on their doorsteps. 16 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk

Business Page 2019 was another busy year for The Crowborough and District Chamber of Commerce The Chamber is keen to support our young people make the transition from education to the world of work. As in previous years, members carried out a number of mock job interviews as part of Beacon Academy’s UCAS/ Careers Day to give students a flavour of what to expect when they do it for real. Feedback has been universally positive with all involved saying how useful the experience was. The Enterprise Centre at Pine Grove finally opened its doors in 2019 and is already Chamber President Jeremy Woolger (L) presenting a proving to be the great asset it promised to cheque to the Royal British Legion Crowborough* be. Many businesses have already made the building their home and we look forward to welcoming more to the town in 2020. The Chamber continued it’s support for worthy local charities and organisations from the generous donations made by visitors to the Summer Fun Day held in the town centre at the start of June. The main recipient was Clued Up Info to which we presented a cheque for £1,000. Another beneficiary was The Crowborough Branch of the Royal British Legion to which the Chamber gave £500 towards their annual Poppy Appeal. Thank you to all those that gave money to these worthy causes. The Fun Day will be taking a hiatus in 2020, allowing the Chamber time to review how to move forward with running such a large event relying solely on volunteers. A decision regarding future years is hoped for by the end of the summer. The Chamber’s thanks go out to all those that have given help in the past Throughout 2020 The Crowborough & District Chamber of Commerce will continue to promote the commercial and general interests of businesses in Crowborough, making representation to local government, statutory bodies and consultative panels and providing networking and growth opportunities to business. If you are a local business, charity, organisation or group and would be interested in joining the Chamber then please visit our website for details regarding membership.

Claire Nash Solicitors When it comes to getting legal advice, it’s always difficult to know where to go, particularly when it’s required for matters of a more sensitive nature. Local solicitor, Claire Nash, understands the stress that going through any legal matter can cause, which is why she will do what she can to make the process as stress free as possible for her clients - whether it’s making a will, obtaining equity release, marital affairs or administrating a loved one’s estate. Claire also understands the importance of being flexible to meet her clients and offers an out of hours, home visit service if required, be it during office hours, evenings or at weekends.

Wills

It is estimated that over 60% of the adult population in the UK do not have a will. It is not as complicated as people may think - a simple Will can be surprisingly inexpensive, even when drafted by a qualified solicitor. To not have a Will in place could mean your assets may not go to your chosen beneficiaries.

Matrimonial Matters

If you are considering divorce or separation, or if you’ve received a divorce petition from your spouse or civil partner, please come and talk to us. Claire offers a free initial consultation where you are able to discuss the process and issues which concern you most. You’ll be able to ascertain whether any further professional input is necessary and this initial consultation is offered on a no obligation basis. You’ve got nothing to lose by speaking to Claire first.

a lump sum payment, perhaps for home improvements, a luxury purchase or as a gift to a loved one for a deposit on a home for example. You should always seek advice from a qualified independent financial advisor to take you through your options before engaging the services of an equity release solicitor.

Lasting Power of Attorney

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint a person(s) to make decisions about matters concerning you if you ever become unable to make those decisions yourself. It gives you the chance to appoint those you know and trust to make decisions that are in your best interests when you are at your most vulnerable.

Probate

Probate may be required when a loved one passes away. Essentially it means the accessing and distribution of the person’s estate according to their Will (if they left one) or according to the law of intestacy (if they did not leave a Will). You will not need to pay money up front on a probate matter - fees and disbursements are paid from the estate monies when they become available. If you find yourself in need of legal advice in any of the above matters, remember Claire Nash Solicitors aim to provide you with the highest professional service and advice, whilst always being approachable, personal, caring and committed to helping you achieve your desired outcomes, and they’re local. Call Claire Nash Solicitors on 01892 731 082 or email info@clairenashsolicitors.co.uk.

Equity Release

Part of effective inheritance tax planning can sometimes involve obtaining an equity release mortgage on your property. This would allow you to remain in your home whilst you enjoy 28 | www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk • info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk
