Dear La Rabida Supporters La Rabida Children’s Hospital had quite an adventure on Chicago’s lakefront in Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11), navigating uncharted waters to thrive in a period marked by uncertainty. Throughout, we continued to reach out to more constituencies, enhancing partnerships and streamlining care. We took our medical records to a new frontier with the dawn of an electronic medical record system, and watched the sun set on the tenure of a longstanding leader. Despite broad changes, our Board of Trustees and staff demonstrated a steadfast commitment to fulfill the hospital’s 115-year-old mission to serve the region’s children with special health care needs regardless of the family’s ability to pay. We expanded our partnership with the University of Chicago to enhance our treatment of children with sickle cell disease and teamed up with Children’s Memorial Hospital to strengthen our diabetes program. Meanwhile, hospital staff was busy assembling massive data points on patients, programs and outcomes to ultimately win national recognition for a team approach
to patient-centered medical home programs. We accomplished all this in the face of tentative government resources and increasing demands. Finally, we said goodbye to our friend and colleague, Paula Kienberger Jaudes, M.D., who stepped down as CEO after years in that position to embark on a new adventure of her own. Perhaps you’ve heard about her travels in Nigeria. With the dawn of the new fiscal year, Brenda Wolf stepped into the position of president and chief executive officer, eager to leverage two decades of service and help guide the hospital through these challenging times. Together, we will draw closer to key constituencies and expand strategic partnerships, providing the best care and services possible to our patients and their families on Chicago’s magnificent lakefront and beyond. W
hen Michelle Vazquez and daughter Maggie moved into Cabin 25 on the S.S. La Rabida’s shiny new South Deck that cold January day, they couldn’t have known the adventure looming on the lakefront horizon. At first, Michelle felt like a juggling artist trying to keep the balls of Maggie’s grueling schedule in the air. Maggie had been born with cerebral palsy almost three years before and undergone hip surgery leading to seven weeks of inpatient rehabilitation at La Rabida. To meet this timeframe, an interdisciplinary team packed the toddler’s schedule with a variety of back-to-back therapies and nutrition sessions that began early and wrapped up late. “Team Maggie,” as Michelle called the staff, was sympathetic to the mom of an exhausted and sometimes cranky toddler, and eventually built more down time into Maggie’s schedule. Even the food service staff adjusted its routine. Michelle was especially appreciative of the flexible patient visitor policy. Then in early February, a blizzard dumped a record-breaking 20-plus inches of snow on the city. For two days, the hospital served as a safe haven between the frozen Lake Michigan and a deserted city. Team Maggie was undaunted. Staff kicked into survival mode, ensuring care and services were uninterrupted. Even administrators at the highest levels donned hairnets and served meals to patients and their family members.
When Maggie was discharged in April, she had experienced the adventure of her young life, while surpassing all therapists’ goals and Michelle’s dreams. Today, Michelle remains in awe as Maggie continues to see La Rabida experts as an outpatient. “Maggie still has cerebral palsy,’’ Michelle says. “But she has experienced so many tiny miracles. Because of La Rabida, walking is a real possibility for her. She’s made amazing progress. We’re really grateful.”

“M
ommy wants him home.” Nina Garabito murmured those words to herself and others innumerable times over the six months her infant son Jayden was hospitalized this past year. Born with respiratory issues that required a tracheostomy and ventilator, little Jayden was rushed to a neonatal intensive care unit immediately following birth. He remained there for three months before becoming stable enough to transfer to La Rabida. Neither Nina nor her husband Noel Garcia were familiar with our oasis on Lake Michigan, and were a bit apprehensive about bringing Jayden to another hospital when he was released from the NICU. “We were so used to the staff and routine,” at the referring hospital, Noel said. Then they toured the S.S. La Rabida, our inpatient unit. “The NICU we came from was great, but it was a big room full of machines and wires. La Rabida has all the medical care Jayden needs but it’s really homey and quiet,” he said.
The couple was especially appreciative of the family friendly accommodations. “As soon as we walked in the door we knew we were in good hands,” said Noel. “One of us could spend the night and we really liked the professional, welcoming staff.” During his time as an inpatient, Jayden’s medical team worked to ensure his continued growth and development. Equally important, they taught his parents everything they’d need to know to keep Jayden stable once he left the hospital. Another plus: the couple’s other 12 children help care for baby brother at home. La Rabida continues to coordinate care and support for Jayden through its “medical home” program. “This provides the coordinated care and support he needs,” said outpatient Case Manager Nancy Richer. “The clinical support we provide, together with the devotion and advocacy of his family, allows Jayden to exceed expectations for growth and meeting developmental milestones.”

ast year, our nurses hosted their first comprehensive conference. More than 100 nursing professionals from across the region were inspired to reconnect with the passion that initially led them to patients. National speakers, as well as La Rabida’s own nursing professionals, presented best practices and networked. Our diabetes patient families networked as well during a springtime celebration of healthy lifestyle choices. Nearly 300 patients and caregivers gathered to learn how to manage the disease through nutrition and exercise. Experts from the La Rabida Chicago Children’s Diabetes Center (CCDC), and those from partner Children’s Memorial Hospital, offered tools to keep patients healthy, both physically and emotionally. Teaching diabetes patients self-management strategies is critically important to our providers. Their commitment draws national recognition, and in FY 11, the prestigious American Diabetes Association recertified the CCDC, underscoring its status as the region’s only ADA-certified pediatric diabetes program.

a Rabida’s leaders and experts have long prided themselves on providing a safety net for Chicago’s most vulnerable children _ those with special health care needs. To meet that commitment to care for those who can’t always afford to pay, the hospital in FY11 again reached beyond the health care community to partner with corporate sponsors. Longtime supporter CVS Caremark Charitable Trust expanded its partnership with the hospital to seed the Cerebral Palsy Medical Home Pilot Project, allowing La Rabida experts to coordinate and track primary care for a select group of patients. Patients and families benefit from customized treatment provided by Physiatrist Lisa Thornton, M.D., Ruby Roy, M.D., a chronic disease specialist, and an interdisciplinary team of experts. Physicians from Children’s Memorial Hospital joined La Rabida’s diabetes team, strengthening the region’s largest pediatric program. Finally, our longest standing alliance with the University of Chicago became even stronger through our joint sickle cell disease program. Pediatricians from the elite medical center have provided stellar treatment for La Rabida patients on both an in-and out-patient basis for more than 50 years. These strategic relationships with medical centers across the region, as well as those with corporate donors, help form the safety net for children who might otherwise fall through cracks in the health care system.
In FY 11, two highly esteemed physicians took the lead as medical directors of our sickle cell disease and diabetes programs and one longtime hospital leader stepped into a new role to help the hospital forge across potentially treacherous terrain.
Cunningham Takes Charge in Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease Added Expertise from Nurse Practitioner Abdullah In FY 11, John Cunningham, M.D., joined the hospital as medical director of the sickle cell program. He also is chief of the section of pediatric hematology/oncology and director of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago and a professor of pediatrics, physiology and stem cell research at the university. Cunningham is internationally recognized as an expert in the treatment and research of blood diseases, particularly in treating hemoglobinopathies, like sickle cell disease. He is also a leader in the field of pediatric stem cell transplantation and the developer of novel uses for this procedure. At La Rabida, Cunningham joins Radhika Peddinti, M.D., and Nurse Practitioner Yasmin Abdullah, R.N., M.S.N., FNP-BC, to care for and educate 400 patients with sickle cell disease and their families. New team members took their posts as longtime sickle cell physician, Uma Subramanian-Srinivasan, M.D., “Dr. Uma� retires after more than 20 years at La Rabida.
Wolf Takes CEO Role Swamy Takes on Diabetes Anita Swamy, M.D., took the helm as medical director of the Chicago Children’s Diabetes Center (CCDC) in FY 11. A board-certified endocrinologist, she brings proven program development and patient care experience to the program. As medical director, Swamy oversees the quality of medical care delivered to patients, the implementation and evaluation of all patient-focused programs, and medical education and physician outreach activities of the clinical staff. Swamy is program co-director and helps establish and execute clinical policies to ensure that the center’s interdisciplinary experts function as a team to deliver high quality, holistic, family centered care to nearly 800 patients in four locations across Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Swamy also is an endocrinologist at Children’s Memorial Hospital.
Brenda J. Wolf has served in leadership roles at La Rabida Children’s Hospital for more than 20 years. From marketing director to vice president of marketing and government relations to executive vice president, Wolf has overseen many of the institution’s vital areas. In 2011, she took on a new title – president and chief executive officer (CEO). As CEO, Wolf’s challenge is to help navigate the most Medicaid-dependent hospital in the state through the current economic storm of health care that threatens funding and quality of care to underserved patients. Wolf honed her leadership, strategy and planning skills over progressively important positions at the hospital. “With her combination of business acumen, government relations expertise and a passion to serve Chicago’s neediest children and their families, Brenda is uniquely qualified to be the ‘face and voice’ of La Rabida,” according to Board C-Chairs Peggy Gann and John Gyann.

mproved patient care is the guiding light of every step La Rabida takes. In FY 11, providers began documenting their path with an electronic medical record (EMR) initiative the hospital named Sunrise.
With the first phase of Sunrise, cumbersome paper medical records were replaced with electronic files that place patient data at providers’ fingertips. Excluding construction projects, the EMR is the hospital’s largest-ever capital outlay. The system is especially important for La Rabida patients who have medically complex needs. It provides immediate across the care continuum _ inpatient, outpatient, rehab, and in between visits. “Having medical records a click away, as opposed to buried in volumes of paper charts, allows providers to
get the information they need to deliver the highest quality care much more readily,” said Rishi Agrawal, M.D., M.P.H., part of La Rabida’s Sunrise launch team. As a member of a newly formed regional health information exchange (HIE), Agrawal draws on the experiences of providers across the Chicago area. In FY 11, the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council named the chronic disease specialist to its 13-member advisory board. The council is the largest unified metropolitan HIE in the nation, serving more than 9.4 million people.

ur driving philosophy is always to treat the whole child, addressing his or her needs that go beyond the medical. We do this with the goal of raising possibilities for each child _ for a lifetime. Under one roof, La Rabida provides interdisciplinary care that brings together a team of pediatric experts including primary and specialty care physicians, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, social workers and development and rehabilitation therapists. We want families to feel more secure at La Rabida by removing barriers that stand between patients and care. In 2011, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) recognized La Rabida’s work as a medical home, offering high quality, consistent and efficient care in the following areas: adolescent care, chronic disease including lung conditions, failure to thrive, prematurity and developmental disabilities and delays including cerebral palsey. The NCQA designated the hospital as the only one in the state to achieve rigorous standards for highquality, coordinated patient-centered primary care to children with special health care needs. La Rabida received a Level 2 recognition _ the
highest available at the time of application _ for its Physician Practice Connections-Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). Over six months, staff gathered documents and data that proved hospital programs met the PCMH standards, which aligned with those of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other promnent medical provider organizations. The AAP defines a medical home as “continuous, comprehensive, accessible, family centered, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective to every child and adolescent.�

a Rabida relies on the generosity of others to advance its mission to serve children regardless of the family’s ability to pay. We are forever indebted to donors such as Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Graham, who help bridge the financial gap for our patients. Generous donations ensure patient care and services continue throughout the year, and allow us to provide the care and support our patients need.
A Chicago public school teacher, Graham taught La Rabida’s young inpatients for 30 years. She knew the importance of our mission, and even in death, helped it continue with a major bequest. In FY 11, we dedicated a corner _ the Betty Graham Education Program _ in the Child Life Pavilion to this longtime supporter. The hospital owes Graham eternal gratitude for the legacy of education.
Donors As a private, independent, mission-oriented hospital, La Rabida provides care to children regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Most of our patients are covered by public insurance, which pays only a portion of actual cost of care. Insurance also doesn’t cover investments in quality, safety, infrastructure and other improvements. Now more than ever we depend on individuals, corporate donors, foundations and others to help fulfill our mission.
