ear Supporters, La Rabida Children’s Hospital has been providing world class care to our patients for over a century. As we strive to meet our mission to serve our community’s children who have complex, lifelong medical conditions, we are always looking to the future. Last fiscal year we were given the opportunity to reach more children when La Rabida was designated as one of only two hospitals in the state to coordinate care for children with complex medical conditions who are insured through Medicaid. In these pages you’ll learn how La Rabida built on established relationships with corporate partners, donors and others, while introducing our gem on Lake Michigan to even more supporters. Someone who became a member of the La Rabida Family during his extended inpatient stay was Luke. When teenager Luke came to us he was virtually unable to move after suffering burns over much of his body. Yet Luke bound out our doors beaming a few short months later. Inside you’ll learn how his hard work with our burn rehabilitation team, which is highly renowned throughout the city, helped Luke regain his independence. This year the hospital added more accolades to its impressive list of honors from professional organizations that renewed their recognition of our expertise, and the unique qualities of the beautiful outpatient facilities that serve our community’s most vulnerable members. One of those children is 13-year-old cheerleader Myrah, who was hospitalized for physical, occupational and speech therapy following brain tumor surgery and continues to excel on an outpatient basis. Little miracles like Luke’s and Myrah’s happen every day at La Rabida. We are pleased and proud to share details of their recoveries. La Rabida is supporting this transition to managed care by developing new relationships with managed care companies, and by investing in data analytics capability to better track the care the hospital provides patients. Some children with medically complex conditions are being moved into “care coordination entities,” which provide an even higher level of coordination and support. Given the hospital’s long history of caring for children with medically complex conditions, La Rabida was chosen as one of only two institutions in the state to coordinate care not only for our patients, but for similar children at other pediatric hospitals or health centers.

This year Medicaid made major changes in how medical care is organized. Many children are being moved into Medicaid managed care plans, designed to ensure that care is being given at the right time and place, without gaps or duplication.

More Help for Families
Using state-of-the-art care coordination software to collaborate with providers, staff works closely with families – often in their own homes – to help them understand and take full advantage of their children’s health plans. “Some families need help sorting through confusing advice from multiple specialists,” said Victoria Thompson, R.N., M.S., clinical director. “Others need assistance with obstacles, such as inadequate housing or food. Still others are used to relying on their local emergency departments for medical care – so they are learning how to work with a doctor who really knows their child.” “This program adds the power of data analytics to our clinical expertise and compassionate approach,” said Anna Carvalho, the program’s executive director. “It streamlines complicated medical planning and families appreciate the extra services.” This new approach will become increasingly important as Medicaid moves away from fee-for-service payment into one where large insurers or provider systems agree to provide all the care needed for a fixed fee.

When it hits you all at one time, it’s hard for a 13-year-old to look at herself in the mirror and say, ‘I’m better today than I was yesterday,’” said Cherise Felters, mother of 13-year-old Myrah. “La Rabida’s given her that mindset.” Myrah began working with the therapists and other specialists at La Rabida on an inpatient basis to improve her endurance, strength and balance after having a brain tumor removed from her cerebellum. Before she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Myrah was a star athlete at Warren Elementary School, where she also was an enthusiastic cheerleader. Intensive therapy helped Myrah learn to walk again, rehabilitate her motor skills and rebound from other complications from the medical trauma of surgery.
Myrah’s therapy goals are all geared toward returning her to where she was before her diagnosis and surgery. So far, Myrah has made significant progress towards regaining her full vision and improving her motor skills – she’s already walking, jumping and performing simple cheers. Recently, Myrah taught her favorite therapists a cheer, “Achievement and Success,” which required clapping, simple dancing and synchronization. “She’s like a coach!” Molly Swenson, physical therapist, said with a laugh after Myrah critiqued her landing. As outpatient therapies continue, medical staff is confident Myrah is on a path to full recovery. She recently went back to school and is excited about applying to an arts magnet high school, where she would study dance.
More Capacity Our New Outpatient Center, which offers patients and their families state-of-the-art facilities, was designed to help provide top quality care in a clinic setting. Brimming with bright colors and decor that reflect our lakeside location, the 13,000-square-foot clinic holds 18 exam rooms designed for children with special health care needs. LEED Recognition
Also key to the design were sustainability and environmental factors. Accordingly, the facility has earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) recognition from the United States Green Building Council. The facilities have an overall 18 percent reduction in energy use, 40 percent reduction in heating, ventilating and air conditioning fan power, 57 percent reduction in space cooling energy consumption, and the landscaping does not require irrigation.
Bricks Dedication
The grand opening for the space took place in early February and later in the year another ceremony marked the dedication of brick pavers -- puchased by generous supporters -- that line the entrance to the building. More than 100 Trustees, employees, volunteers, patients, families and supporters gathered at the entrance for the “grand reveal” of the engraved bricks. “It’s very personal and special for us,” said La Rabida patient Jamal, 17, of the brick that he and his sister dedicated to their late mother.

Also integrated into the new space is a colorful 1,900-sq-ft garden just outside the waiting area featuring a wave wall, padded ground in case of falls, and great views for relaxation and comfort.

Luke, 14, was diagnosed with autism at 19 months.
Despite being nonverbal, Luke has a charming disposition and has developed strong relationships with family, teachers, caregivers – and this year with staff at La Rabida.
eat. His therapy team also made a detailed communication book so that Luke could point to pictures of what he wanted or needed, and the team, in turn, could show him what to expect from procedures.
Luke came to La Rabida for inpatient burn rehabilitation and wound care after he was badly burned in a kitchen accident. Luke and his father Jeff were cooking together when Jeff left the room. Moments later he looked down the hall to see Luke engulfed in flames.
Luke has always been able to find comfort in music. The nurses and Luke’s therapy team would often sing and dance along to the music. “Luke has a special way of making himself and everyone around him smile despite what he’s going through,” said Melissa Daley, R.N.
When Luke first arrived at La Rabida after spending months at a local burn unit, he needed to relearn many daily living activities that he had lost from the time he spent bedridden from his injuries and many surgeries. His skin and muscles were tight and had lost much strength and flexibility.
He would often place a nurse’s hand on his back to show where he needed extra ointment or a pat to soothe an itch.
Luke was, of course, anxious at first. He was unable to leave his bed or eat anything by mouth, and his daily dressing changes sometimes took more than two hours and were quite painful. Because Luke has never communicated with words, his rehab team relied heavily upon his loving family to offer suggestions on what Luke liked to listen to, watch and
Luke made steady progress. Everyone celebrated the day when Luke was eating enough calories to have his feeding tube removed. Soon he was able to stand on his own. Through Luke’s hard work and determination and the dedication of Team La Rabida, Luke began walking and would even run when the mood struck him. When leaving La Rabida, Luke was developmentally back to where he was before the accident – a sweet-natured teen with a contagious smile.
More Exposure AbelsonTaylor + Chicago Charity Challenge AbelsonTaylor, the largest independent health and wellness advertising agency in the world, has forged a relationship with La Rabida. The firm, which has a long history of community engagement, is working with La Rabida to coordinate volunteer opportunities and fundraising events, as well as apply its expertise through pro bono marketing initiatives. The two organizations were brought together through the Chicago Charity Challenge (ChiChaCha), which matches charities with high-profile companies to raise funds, engage employees and utilize corporate expertise. (Call One, a Chicago-based communications technology provider, was the founding sponsor of the ChiChaCha, donating time, money and company resources.) “We’re extremely pleased to partner with AbelsonTaylor,” said Janet Haines, vice president, fund development and external affairs. “Their heartsATwork team has presented some innovative ways to communicate with the community and we’re excited by the possibilities of this partnership.” So far, the pair participated in the ChiChaCha FUNdraising Olympics, hosted a back-to-school backpack giveaway for La Rabida patients and is in the process of revamping the hospital’s website.
La Rabida Takes on Miracle Mile La Rabida teamed up with Chicago Cubs Charities and global steel distributer Magellan Corporation this summer to commemorate Wrigley Field’s 100th birthday and the many historical moments that have taken place at the park over the past century. Forty-seven Chicago-based nonprofits, celebrities and artists took part in the Centennial Seats Public Art Project. Through August, 50 custom-designed ballpark seats lined Michigan Avenue. La Rabida’s seats honored Cubs pitcher Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins, whose number was retired by the Cubs in 2009. La Rabida’s seats were on display just south of the Tribune Tower on Michigan until they were auctioned off, benefitting La Rabida and Cubs Charities.
More Recognition Dedication to Excellence The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) recently renewed its recognition of La Rabida’s Patient-Centered Medical Home Programs for Children with Special Health Care Needs (PCMH). These high-quality, patient-centered primary care programs go “beyond medicine” to meet all of a patient’s needs with a goal of optimal outcomes. In 2011, the hospital was the first independent pediatric facility in Illinois to receive NCQA recognition. PCMH programs have been proven to promote higher quality and lower costs while improving patient outcomes. Standards closely align with those of the American Academy of Pediatrics and other prominent medical provider organizations. The NCQA recognition is valid for three years.
PR Earns Top Awards The Public Relations Society of America, Chicago Chapter, honored La Rabida with three awards at their annual Skyline Awards Gala. Our 2013 annual report, “Welcome to Our Gem on the Lake,” which highlighted the new Outpatient Center, along with our media relations campaign for the facility’s grand opening, each earned the highest designation in the category. “Raising Possibilities for a Lifetime,” a series of patient stories on the hospital’s Facebook page, earned an Award of Excellence in social media.
More Fun Friends of La Rabida Awards The Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel Chicago warmly welcomed more than 600 guests for the 28th annual Friends of La Rabida Awards Celebration. Honorees included Donald McNeeley and Chicago Tube & Iron for Corporate Philanthropy, Christopher and Sheila Kennedy for Community Service, and Senator Kwame Raoul for his dedication to Public Service. Guests showed their support for La Rabida through silent and live auctions and the exciting paddle raise. Patient Sanaa’s father, Michael McGee, M.D., took to the podium to relate their family’s roller coaster experience that included a year-long ICU stay and another hospitalization at La Rabida for home care training. Then Sanaa – who is now six years old and doing well – joined dad and the rest of the family on the stage to thunderous applause.
25th Annual Golf Outing La Rabida’s 25th Annual Golf Classic at Harborside International Golf Course was a swinging success. The sunny summer day offered 36 holes of golf on two lush courses, live and silent auctions, raffles, and lunch and dinner buffets.
Corporate Advisory Board’s Cocktails for a Cause La Rabida’s Corporate Advisory Board is a group of emerging corporate leaders who increase awareness of and financial support for the hospital. Their annual Cocktails for a Cause event introduces the hospital’s mission to many attendees, while also serving as a fundraiser and networking opportunity.
Medical Resident Pens Story: Hospital “Raises” Girl A publication for Illinois pediatricians shared the moving story of “Nikki,” a seven-year-old girl with complex medical needs who spent much of her young life at La Rabida before becoming a foster child. “Nikki’s Story: A Hospital Raises a Little Girl” was written by Ajanta Patel, M.D. Patel first met Nikki in the winter of 2012 while a medical student at the University of Chicago doing a rotation at La Rabida. Patel was moved by Nikki’s charming personality and the hospital’s loving, nurturing environment. The touching story was published in last winter’s issue of Illinois Pediatrician, the quarterly publication of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
PBS Highlights Transition Program La Rabida’s experts, patients and their families were featured in a segment of WTTW’s “Chicago Tonight.” The story focused on Leading Adolescents to Understanding New Challenges in their Health Care (LAUNCH), one of La Rabida’s transition programs, which offers medical and support services to teens with special health care needs who are aging out of pediatric care and moving to adult care. LAUNCH was also featured in the special needs issue of Chicago Parent magazine, highlighting how the initiative helps patients and caregivers navigate the “adult world” of care for those with special needs.
Comfort of Home: Redefining CP Care Our cerebral palsy medical home clinic and serial casting program were featured as the cover story of ADVANCE for Physical Therapy and Rehab Medicine this year. The story details La Rabida’s integrated approach to treating kids with cerebral palsy.
COVERAGE Patient Gets VIP Treatment Stevie Smith III,10, a patient with cerebral palsy, met with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and former Govenor Pat Quinn at an event last summer. Both gave him encouraging words. “The service at La Rabida is amazing,” Stevie Smith, Jr., who has been bringing his son to La Rabida since he was two years old, told NBC5. “Before coming here Stevie could not walk a step without his walker, but now he can take several steps by himself.”
Physician Researcher Studies Recession’s Impact on Medicaid Coverage Rishi Agrawal, M.D., La Rabida attending physician, led a nationwide study that examined the economic recession’s impact on families with children who are chronically ill. The study, which followed children from 2007 to 2010, was published in the June issue of Pediatrics. A story on Agrawal’s research was also featured in HealthDay News, a web-based news service with national reach. “This is a vulnerable population, and when the downturn hit, these families were less likely to be able to work and maintain private insurance,” he said.
Sensory Aids for Children with Autism La Rabida Occupational Therapist Lucia Arellano spoke with the Chicago Tribune on how children with Autism Spectrum Disorder experience different sensations and what modern technology is doing to improve lives. “One of autism’s symptoms is that it can amplify sights, sounds and smells,” said Arellano. “The hospital has a cart filled with sensory devices to comfort these patients. Overstimulation causes stress, which many people with autism cannot manage in the same way as others.”
FAMOUS FACES The Plain White T’s In town to perform at 101.9fm THE MIX’s Miracle on State Street concert, from which La Rabida benefits, the Plain White T’s decided to visit the inpatient unit at La Rabida. The Grammy nominated band, which hails from the Chicago area, delighted patients and staff with an acoustic set.
Butler Bonds with Young Bulls Fans
Chicago Bulls forward Jimmy Butler visited La Rabida patients, families and staff, challenging kids in interactive games, reading to others and taking “selfies” along the way with enthusiastic fans. Butler’s entourage included Nancy Reinsdorf, president of the Chicago Bulls Charities, of which La Rabida is a beneficiary. Video from the visit later was included in a national Bulls Charity public service announcement.
The Sky Has No Limit
The latest in the hospital’s legion of major sports franchise supporters is the Chicago Sky, WNBA Eastern Conference Champions. The players are role models who actively lead both on and off the court, while passionately giving back to the community.
Staley da Bear
George McCaskey, chairman of the Chicago Bears, and an entourage that included mascot Staley Da Bear and former Bears players visited with families and distributed adorable stuffed bears. Omari was immediately drawn to Staley and acted as his unofficial tour guide throughout the inpatient unit, declaring, “I LOVE the Bears!”

Former Chicago White Sox powerhouse Ron Kittle and team mascot Southpaw stopped by La Rabida to distribute official White Sox swag and spread joy.
How Embrace-A-Bull
Jamal, 17, a patient with sickle cell disease, was the La Rabida recipient of the Embrace-A-Bulls program. He and his sister Keshia, along with cousins Malachi and Savion, received courtside seats and VIP passes. After a tour of the memorabilia-filled corporate office, they were brought courtside to watch the team warm up and even got to meet several team members. Another unexpected surprise: a $1,000 Jewel-Osco gift card. The evening was capped off by a Bulls win!

Holiday Joy for Our Kids A long-time Trustee and friend of La Rabida, Allen Kutchins, has touched the lives of our patients in many ways. None so directly, perhaps, as through his company’s annual holiday toy drive to benefit the children of La Rabida. Kutchins is a partner in KRD, a Chicago-area certified public accounting firm that has been collecting toys from its vendors, employees, friends and other business associates for our kids since 2004. This year KRD was turned into Santa Land for a toy drive promotional video with Kutchins and his wife Genie even doing the honors as the Clauses. The results: a record breaking 2,000 toys for our delighted children.

Trust Pays It Forward
One way that individuals and corporations can support charities such as La Rabida is by establishing a trust in which the hospital is a beneficiary. This year we had a surprising – and very substantial – gift through the Nathans Trust. Established by Chicago Tube & Iron executive Gordon Nathans in 1947, the trust was established to benefit family members, CTI employees and favorite charities of Mr. Nathans. More than 60 years later, following the passing of the last Nathans relative, the hospital became the recipient of a $3.6 million disbursement from the Nathans Trust. CTI Headquarters The bequest – thanks to the kindness of one family – good stewardship on the part of CTI executive leadership, dedication of CTI employees, and confidence in the La Rabida mission, resulted in the largest gift in the Bob Haigh, former CEO; hospital’s history.
