Dear Friends, For well over a century, La Rabida Children’s Hospital has realized its mission. That’s over 100 years’ worth of moments in which we have witnessed our children achieve their fullest potential. At the core of what we do at La Rabida is a mission that we proudly fulfill in the lives of nearly 10,000 families each year: we provide specialized, family-centered health care to children with medically complex conditions, disabilities and chronic illness. Through expertise, compassion and advocacy, our team of physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists and other professionals ensures that our children and their families live their best lives. In September, our Board of Trustees reaffirmed our mission statement to make certain that every aspect of our operations brings our patients and their families the expertise, compassion, and advocacy that have characterized La Rabida since the late 19th century. We must be certain that no obstacles stand in the way of providing world-class care to some of the Chicago area’s most vulnerable children. In the pages that follow, you will learn more about the events that made 2015 a success for our organization. The stories serve as testaments to our mission in action—profound examples of the expertise, compassion and advocacy that make La Rabida unique.

Our Mission La Rabida Children’s Hospital provides specialized, family-centered health care to children with medically complex conditions, disabilities, and chronic illness. Through expertise, compassion, and advocacy, we help children and their families reach their fullest potential, regardless of their ability to pay.

As La Rabida’s commitment remains constant, this year we also recognized a change within our organization. The conclusion of fiscal year 2015 marked the close of John Gyann’s service as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at La Rabida. In the five years that John served as our chairman, we saw the conclusion of our hospital’s capital campaign, the opening of our outpatient center, and the establishment of our Care Coordination Entity. On behalf of all of us at La Rabida, we express our most sincere gratitude for the wisdom and generosity that John has shared with us.

La Rabida’s successful year was made possible by our supporters, donors and volunteers. We could not continue to live our mission without those who demonstrate their support at events like our annual gala, golf classic, and toy drives, as well as through corporate sponsorships, generous gifts, and volunteer efforts, to name a few. Because of you, there is La Rabida. We thank you for your support. Sincerely, Brenda J. Wolf President and CEO Fred Berglund Chairman, Board of Trustees

Expertise At La Rabida, we are proud to offer an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, therapists, behavioral health specialists and other professionals who work together to coordinate a comprehensive plan of care for each child. In inpatient and outpatient settings, our team of highly trained professionals delivers uniquely superior care to children who have medically complex conditions associated with chronic illness or developmental disability. Our inpatient care includes 24/7 coverage from board-certified pediatricians and experienced nurses for children who live with chronic illnesses; need rehabilitation after surgery, burns, brain injury, stroke or trauma; depend on technology, or are transitioning from a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit at another hospital to home. Our team provides coordinated care from admission through discharge. Our Child Life and developmental therapy staff ensure that kids continue to grow, develop and adjust, and so much more. In addition, to meet the special needs of children with chronic conditions, we offer a wide range of outpatient services on our Lake Michigan campus and specialized services at locations in Chicago, its surrounding suburbs and northwest Indiana. Our staff members deliver care in their areas of specialty including patient centered medical home, care coordination and developmental therapy, to name a few. Using a team approach, we provide continuity of care, often throughout childhood. Holistic Care Helps Family Heal From Tragedy After surviving a tragic house fire that claimed their mother’s life, siblings Gerry Jr., 7, and Kiara, 2, were admitted for a multi-week stay aboard the S.S. La Rabida inpatient unit. During this time, Gerry and Kiara received treatment for their extensive burns as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapies. Gerry also received grief counseling to help cope with the loss of his mother, who died shielding her two children from the fire. La Rabida staff rose to the challenge, offering a wide array of services to meet the siblings’ multifaceted needs. The children, who have since moved into a new home in Little Village with their father and maternal grandmother, still return to La Rabida on an outpatient basis for therapy. “The special care they offer at La Rabida gives you hope,” their father, Gerry Sr., said. “It’s their job to heal, but they have gone above and beyond for all of us.”

New Chief Medical Officer Takes the Helm David Fitzsimmons Soglin, M.D., joined La Rabida in the vital role of chief medical officer. He provides leadership to our medical staff and promotes continued innovation in the model of care the hospital has developed to serve Chicago’s most vulnerable children. Dr. Soglin brings 26 years of clinical and leadership experience in pediatric and hospital practice, most recently as attending physician and chairman in the Department of Pediatrics at Stroger Hospital of Cook County and attending physician for Pediatric Emergency Services at Cook County Children’s Hospital. La Rabida’s longstanding record of providing excellent care to children and families in need helped seal the deal. “Our staff truly understands the impact that illness and disability can have on a family. That’s why our approach to a child’s treatment is empowering,” Dr. Soglin said. “It is multidisciplinary, family-centered, and designed to nurture the well-being of the child’s body, mind, and spirit. Our deep expertise helps children and their families realize their fullest potential.”

Compassion When it comes to treating pediatric patients, providing outstanding clinical care is just the beginning. Our patients need care and compassion to aid them in coping with their ongoing physical and emotional challenges. La Rabida staff members excel at knowing just when patients—and their famililies—need a special boost. And they happily go above and beyond to extend that compassion beyond the exam room or therapy gym in ways that kids and families will long remember.

La Rabida Patient Becomes an Honorary WNBA Team Member Kiara, 14, has been coming to La Rabida for most of her life for various therapies to compensate for the hemiplegic cerebral palsy that weakens her left side. Knowing that the teen is also a passionate basketball fan, our friends at the WNBA Chicago Sky and La Rabida worked to make a dream come true. In August 2015, the Chicago Sky “signed” Kiara to a oneday contract as an honorary team member. She and her family attended a practice and press conference before being treated to a behind-the-scenes tour and courtside seats for the game. Kiara was even honored on the court during the game. Just as Kiara will always remember how her La Rabida team went the extra mile for her, so will her father, who expressed that Kiara’s day with the Chicago Sky was the happiest day of his life as a dad because his daughter received an experience that he could not have given her without our help.

La Rabida’s “Superwoman” Takes Off Madison, 10, has Moyamoya disease, a progressive narrowing of key brain arteries that can have devastating consequences as the brain eventually becomes deprived of blood and oxygen. After experiencing several seizures and strokes, Madison underwent surgery at a major medical center, where her condition stabilized but left her still unable to move or sit up without assistance. Madison came to La Rabida for intensive inpatient therapy and gradually regained her ability to speak, stand and walk without assistance. As her stay aboard the S.S. La Rabida inpatient unit drew to a close, Madison’s team was delighted to show their support. Dozens of team members— including physicians, nurses, therapists and housekeeping staff—signed a Superwoman cape for Madison, leaving encouraging messages for Madison to remember. This was a simple gesture that exemplifies the La Rabida spirit of compassion. The team knows that, as far as Madison has come, she will still need support as she continues her rehabilitation journey and that special cape will be there to boost her spirits when needed. Madison returns to La Rabida weekly for outpatient therapy.

Advocacy In addition to providing patient care, we know that advocacy is an important part of a holistic philosophy. In keeping with La Rabida’s focus on serving children with chronic illnesses, developmental disabilities, trauma and abuse, sometimes advocacy takes the form of working for large-scale changes in society to improve patients’ lives. Other times, advocacy means empowering patients and families by educating them about issues affecting their daily lives. We also advocate by spreading the word to our supporters about the illnesses and conditions we treat.

Getting the Word Out About Sickle Cell This year, La Rabida got a real boost in delivering care for patients with sickle cell disease, a painful and potentially deadly inherited blood condition. Our friends at the Magellan Corporation created a lasting legacy in honor of our friend, the late Charles Horn III, recognized via a festive memorial event.

“Cruise Along with La Rabida” Helps Explain Medicaid Changes Last year, Illinois Medicaid made major changes in how medical care is organized. That means many of our patients were required to enroll in a managed care plan for the first time. Nearly 100 staff Cruise Along members received special training in the with La Rabida! Don’t Miss the Boat! requirements so they could answer families’ Starting September questions about the Important Changes new rules. to MEDICAID But our efforts didn’t stop there. We If you want to remain with our doctors, you must choose a Medicaid health plan created “Cruise Along that includes La Rabida doctors. Questions: Take a flyer attached here or with La Rabida,” an contact 773-363-6700 ext. 8740 or MedicaidQuestions@LaRabida.org educational campaign with posters and information sheets. The materials, designed to be easily understood by all parents, included the answers to questions like, “What is a health plan?” and “Can I switch health plans if I don’t like the plan my child enrolled in?” We consider helping parents navigate the sometimes-confusing world of health care to be an important part of the services we provide.

Medicaid will be sending letters to some La Rabida patients that require them to select a health plan by the end of the year. Cruise Along with La Rabida! Starting September Important Changes to MEDICAID

Medicaid will be sending letters to some La Rabida patients that require them to select a new health plan by the end of the year. La Rabida doctors will be in some of the new Medicaid health plans but not others.

By the end on August we will tell you which health plans include our doctors.

Today at La Rabida, the Charles Horn III Sickle Cell Program funds a battery of tests known as neurocognitive screening for patients living with sickle cell. These tests effectively predict and identify neurological deficiencies or damage that can occur when red blood cells clump together and block blood supply to the brain stem. La Rabida also promotes individual sickle cell advocacy by hosting peer mentoring events for young patients. Elijah Powell, a junior at Morehouse College, was treated at La Rabida for sickle cell disease from the age of 2 months until he left for college. This past summer, he returned to speak with 20 other college-bound patients with sickle cell about his experience making the transition to adulthood.

To Elijah, the mentoring session was important because “having sickle cell can be a hindrance,” he said. “But with the right mentorship and guidance, you can still accomplish your dreams and live a fulfilled life.”

In Appreciation to Our Volunteers La Rabida is a special place, not only because of what we do, but also because of who we are. For our patients and families, our caring and compassionate volunteers are an integral part of the La Rabida experience. From our afterschool tutors to our nursing volunteers, there is no shortage of generous spirits who make a difference in the lives of our kids. From July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, 209 volunteers gave 9,593 hours of service to La Rabida. Our volunteers’ generous gifts of time, cheer and goodwill help smooth the way for our patients and their families each and every day. Without our dedicated volunteers, we could not fulfill our mission. For that, we are forever grateful.
