Welcome to our new gem on the lake. The rare jewel that is La Rabida has been gleaming brightly since 1896.
In fiscal year 2013 (FY13), we neared completion on an ambitious project to expand and renovate our outpatient facilities, giving our children, their families and our medical staff more room to shine.
A colorful new13,000 - square - f oot clinic with18 spacious exam rooms began welcoming patients in the summer. The new exam rooms are designed in four lake themed “ponds”: duck, frog, turtle and fish. The expansive waiting area and garden, and updated facilities, provide a setting that is truly worthy of our patients, their families and our medical staff. Today, La Rabida serves more than 7,500 children, and just like precious stones, they all have their own unique potential. This year, with our patient’s needs in mind, we have taken additional steps to alleviate pain and discomfort they experience while in the hospital through our new Comfort Care program; we are now offering a high risk clinic for vulnerable sickle cell patients; we have added physicians for cardiology, pulmonology and infectious diseases; and we are helping our teenage patients transfer smoothly from pediatric to adult care through two new transition groups. Here, you will read about this year’s challenges, accomplishments, and the special patients we care for.

U nveiling a New Gem on the Lake Outpatient Clinic Opens
Floor to ceiling windows, lake views at every turn, jewel tone dÊcor and artwork featuring animals found among the Great Lakes. This is the new outpatient clinic at La Rabida. The clinic, phase one of an ambitious construction project, opened in August 2013 with a splash. The colorful, nauticalinspired rooms were flooded with patients and staff on opening day. All were awed by the brightly lit, airy space and expansive views. The new exam rooms are equipped with the latest technologies and allow greater access for patients with medical complexities – especially those with mobility issues. Designed with family-centered care in mind, the clinic features large private team meeting rooms for staff and a waiting area with activities for our young patients and their families, such as a large screen device that can be used for interactive games and drawing. Renovations on the former outpatient center were completed in early 2014, enabling La Rabida to offer the very best in primary and specialty care for children with special health care needs.

Mateo’s Milestones
Reaping Benefits of Early Intervention Approximately 6,000 babies in the U.S. are born with Down syndrome each year – one in every 700 births.

La Rabida strives to help patients diagnosed with Down syndrome overcome physical and cognitive obstacles through developmental, speech/language, occupational and physical therapies. The key to improving the development of children born with Down syndrome is early intervention, something that positively affected patient Mateo and his mother Nancy.
Nancy, an attorney with the American Bar Association and a single mother, learned that her child would be born with Down Born November 20, 2010 syndrome while pregnant. Mateo, now three years old, started speech/language and infant development therapies at two months of age at La Rabida while also working with Edith Chernoff, M.D., in the Amniocentesis showed signs of Down syndrome program for children with Down syndrome. at 15 weeks
The effects of early intervention are apparent in Mateo’s progress, according to Amelia Miller, chief infant development specialist. “I showed Nancy early on the strokes to use in infant massage and she used them at home on Mateo,” said Miller. “This gives the parent and child a nice bonding experience, helps with body awareness for the infant and can help with circulation, digestion and muscle development.” Mateo recently aged-out of early intervention and began undergoing speech/language and physical therapies. “Team Mateo” is also helping him get used to being in a classroom setting through mock school days and has worked with his teachers so that they will be familiar with his needs. Working with Nancy and Mateo, staff are building a solid foundation of skills Mateo will carry into the rest of his life.
Adorien’s Resilience Struggles and Triumphs
More than 250,000 children in the U.S. are seriously burned each year. Nine- year- old Adorien was among them in 2013, suffering severe burns in a house fire. Though burned over most of his body, the firemen were struck by how calm Adorien was as they gingerly removed the melted clothes from his singed body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital’s burn unit and later transferred to La Rabida for burn rehabilitation. When Adorien arrived he could barely stand and rarely spoke. He also experienced bad dreams. However, with La Rabida’s nurturing care that included burn rehab and psychological therapies, he soon opened up and made remarkable progress. Still Adorien missed his family and friends being far away from his home in Rolling Meadows. After a visit from the firemen who saved his life, they came to the rescue again, buying Adorien a matching set of iPads so he could FaceTime with his friends and family.
During a tour of the hospital, Chicago White Sox Charities’ Senior Director, Community Relations, Christine O’Reilly showed Adorien her diamond-encrusted 2005 White Sox World Championship ring. After slipping it on his finger, he asked innocently “Can I have it?” While O’Reilly couldn’t honor the request, the following day she sent a box of White Sox merchandise including a replica ring. On a sunny summer day Adorien was discharged, just in time for an Independence Day family picnic. Before leaving, Adorien received parting gifts from clinical and Child Life staff, all of whom were deeply moved by his remarkable resilience and spirit.
Sanaa Soars
Preemie Takes First Unaided Breaths
Sanaa and her sister Mikayla were born prematurely at 24 weeks. The twins, born to Asia and Michael in northwest Indiana, were rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at a Chicago hospital for their lungs to mature. Mikayla responded to early treatment, but Sanaa remained in critical condition for months. Attempts to wean her from the heart and lung machine resulted in further complications. Sanaa was given a tracheostomy in order to stabilize her breathing due to her heart and lung issues. Eight long months later, Sanaa was transferred to La Rabida for developmental therapy, to wean her from many medications, ensure she remained stable and prepare the family for life at home caring for the fragile, ventilator-dependent baby. “We weren’t familiar with La Rabida and initially apprehensive. But as soon as we neared the beautiful lake location, and as they wheeled her down the hallway past all the friendly faces and into a spacious room that had everything needed to care for Sanaa, I knew we had made the right move,” said Asia. One of those friendly faces was Rosalva, a nurse case manager, who ensured that the family had the knowledge and confidence they needed to get Sanaa home and keep her there. That education came in handy when on two different occasions Sanaa’s trachea was perforated and the family had to rush Sanaa back to the La Rabida acute care clinic. She eventually got to stay home and transitioned to outpatient care. Bonding with Rosalva and the other nurses even inspired mom to go into nursing, graduating top of her class. Last spring, Sanaa experienced another milestone when her trach tube was removed, leaving Sanaa to breathe on her own for the first time in her young life. “We’re forever indebted to La Rabida,” said Michael.

Keeping Kids Home Sickle Cell High-Risk Clinic Tanisha Jones, N.P., recently joined Radhika Peddinti, M.D., and Medical Director John Cunningham, M.D., on the La Rabida sickle cell disease team.With a strong background in pediatric oncology/hematology, Jones is an important addition to the unit’s efforts to minimize hospitalizations for children with sickle cell disease. Besides regular clinic, in which patients are seen by their doctor, nurse and other sickle cell experts, and care for those who receive monthly blood transfusions, the team recently added a hydroxyurea clinic for high-risk patients. Hydroxyurea is a drug that helps elevate the child’s fetal hemoglobin, thereby decreasing the patient’s S hemoglobin, ideally leading to fewer pain crises. A patient is considered at high risk if he or she has had many pain crises, an acute chest crisis or multiple admissions to the hospital associated with sickle cell. All of these things increase the risk for organ damage or stroke. According to Cunningham, an internationally known expert in the treatment and research of childhood blood diseases, the goal of moving more patients to hydroxyurea is to lower the number of pain crises, thereby keeping patients at home and out of the hospital. The benefits of hydroxyurea greatly outnumber the risks, he said.
Comfort Care
Pain Free Environment Comfort Care is a new program that focuses on improving the quality of life for all patients. One of the main components of comfort care, sometimes known as palliative care, is choice. Patients and families should always have a choice in treatment, pain management, and end-of-life preparations, according to Ruby Roy, M.D., and Nancy Richer, R.N., who this year launched the initiative through a grant from the Coleman Foundation. “Comfort Care is educational for staff, essential for patients and therapeutic for families,” said Roy. Educational rounds for staff including physicians, nurses, social workers, infant development and child life specialists, are given weekly and cover topics such as how to offer better pain management options, how families can cope with prognosis, pain and denial, and how to discuss these topics with families. This new pain management program, designed for all clinical staff, aims to offer families choices to help alleviate pain, discomfort and fear during treatments. Rolling carts in the inpatient unit, acute care clinic and outpatient clinic feature items for pain relief, distraction, relaxation, diversion and comfort. Staff use items housed on the cart during potentially painful, anxiety raising procedures such as IV insertion and removal, vaccines, dressing changes for burn victims, g-tube changes and blood draws. Pain management tools include “Buzzy,” a device that numbs the skin before an injection and buzzes to distract the patient during a procedure. “These things take more time and money, but they’re worth it,” said Roy.
Easing Transition to Adulthood Children with medically complex conditions require specialty care unique to their needs. When these patients become adults, they still need unique care, but are better served in a facility designed for and focused on adults. This year La Rabida has taken steps to ensure that our patients get the care they need even after they enter adulthood. “Moving On”, a grant initiative partially funded by the Medical Home Network (MHN), a community partnership to improve the health of people living on Chicago’s South Side, helps pediatric hospitals prepare patients and their families for adult care. La Rabida’s programs - Leading Adolescents to Understanding New Challenges in their Health Care (LAUNCH), and Assistance and Support for Caregivers as they Embark in New Health Care Directions for their young adults (ASCEND), were created in response to a national call by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to support young adults seeking health care for chronic illnesses. La Rabida sought to meet this challenge by offering resources to help patients transition to adult care. Medical Home Program Manager Pam Northrop said the programs are central to La Rabida’s mission. “When children have special health care needs it’s much more of a challenge to transition to the adult world. Our job is to bridge the gap.” LAUNCH provides patients, ages 16 and up, an opportunity to be involved in planning their future health care, as well as tools to help them self-advocate and become educated consumers. ASCEND focuses on parent resources when patients are not cognitively able to navigate systems. “La Rabida helps to make the transition however large or small as uncomplicated as possible,” said Northrop.
FUNdraising Efforts Civil Rights Events a Home Run
Major League Baseball’s Annual Civil Rights Game Weekend, hosted by the Chicago White Sox this year, was an out-of-the-park experience for La Rabida. Festivities included a screening of the movie 42, the Jackie Robinson story; an MLB Beacon Awards luncheon (the proceeds benefitted La Rabida), and the 7th Annual Civil Rights Game at U.S. Cellular Field.
Cocktails for a Cause
The bi-annual event, organized by our Corporate Advisory Board, combines networking with philanthropy, making this after-work mixer both a fun and productive evening.
Summer Fun on the Links
The 24th Annual La Rabida Golf Classic at Harborside International Golf Center was an adventure on the links for more than 200 golf enthusiasts. The August fundraiser featured a 50/50 raffle, silent and live auctions, lunch and dinner buffets, as well as golf awards and prizes.

Our Gala, now in its 27th year, with all proceeds from ticket sales, donations, live and silent auctions and a paddle raise supporting the hospital, was a glamorous hit. The Reinsdorf Family, owners of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox, Drs. Eric and Cheryl Whitaker, and the musical ensemble Sharing Notes were honored this year.
MIX Miracle a Success
The perennial Miracle on State Street concert, hosted by Hubbard Broadcasting’s 101.9fm The MIX, once again sold out the regal Chicago Theatre in December. The concert, featuring the Backstreet Boys, Plain White T’s, Colbie Caillat and American Authors, benefitted La Rabida.
