BAYFashion has always tried to bring the best of fashion from around the world to San Francisco and for our Fall issue we decided to take a trip to Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain to bring you on a tour of the city in our own unique fashionable way. Founded as a Roman city, Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain, after Madrid. Besieged several times during its history, Barcelona has a rich cultural heritage and is today an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination. Particularly renowned for the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Last but not the least, its the home of Barça (FC Barcelona) one of the top professional football teams in the world.

Special thanks to the Mayor of Barcelona for the amazing access and co-operation to let us shoot unhindered

Some of the most prestigious awards and publications of the tourism and hostelry industry have recognized W Barcelona as one of the most attractive destinations in Europe. The BAYFashion team had the pleasure of staying at the hotel during our recent trip to Barcelona for our ‘Fashion Destination’ editorial shoot in the streets of Barcelona. This hotel is a true marvel of architecture and a testament of fine living and amazing customer service. So put it on your list of hotels to book on your next Europe visit.

Fall 2012

Interview with ‘Sail’ Architect: Ricardo Bofill Q: The W Brand is about telling a story. What story does W Barcelona tell through its architecture?

A: Barcelona is the stage of the coolest video game in Hollywood; the city provides a sublime combination of old and new that is fascinating to a big crowd. The Romans founded a city between two rivers on the Mediterranean seafront crossing two streets, the Cardus and the Decumanus. W Barcelona is part of this story and its evolution of contrasts, history, and architecture. Q: What local or cultural elements were you most inspired by and how did you integrate them into and “localize” the hotel in its architectural concept? A: First of all, I went to the site. Of course, the site was the Mediterranean Sea. This has been one of the most spiritual and exciting moments of my life, I was standing on the Rompeolas – the city pier – looking into the blue horizon, into the deep water, and thinking, its right there! In the middle of the water! About 300 meters from where I was standing. After breathing very deep for a long time, I went straight back to the studio. “The Sail/La Vela” was created. At first it looked like a pirate boat with two masts! Q: From a visitor’s eye, what is the most unexpected element of W Barcelona’s architecture? A: Barcelona is the mixture of all architectures. We have everything. The most excellent urbanism and the most incredible variation of architecture pieces you can find, from the Roman Walls to the latest icons. The result of thousands of architects working together for two thousand years. We hope that the W “Sail” becomes part of this story. Q: What elements did you and have the most fun with and what elements did you find the most challenging, inspiring, emotional? A: The water. The Mediterranean provided the maximum excitement. It is like a dream, a moving image, a world of infinite reflections. We were inspired by the attitude needed to confront such a powerful element, it was mother Earth we were talking to here, nothing less, and of course we were deeply challenged. We were humbled. The curve talks to the water. Q: How did you go about creating such vast and open space, and that also borders the Mediterranean, while making it flow and integrated into its natural setting? A: Urbanism is the story behind every large scale project. Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura has included urban parameters in projects from the early sixties of last century. The idea here is to make a Mediterranean Plaza overlooking the Sea, like a big balcony or a theater with a great scene, the water. The master plan does more: it rotates the Paseo Maritimo axis, it provides the last beach on the south front, it creates a new commercial marina, and it opens a new port mouth that separates the industrial and logistical areas from the city. Q: What architectural element does W Barcelona have that no other hotel or building does? A: The experience of living in the Mediterranean with 21st century coolness. It should be a sexy experience. Barcelona will provide the rest. Q: What are you inspired by personally and what elements of your own journey of experiences did you infuse into the hotel’s architecture? A: Schematically, the attitude towards the Mediterranean provided the Sail concept. Everything is possible when you are One with nature. The object’s skin provides spectacular reflections, outside the light burns and the wind sometimes is strong: so we need to make a special ship with a special interior world. From the exterior world of the city to the WOW factor in your room, it is all about dramatic sequences. Q: Please share with us any other thoughts or perspectives relevant to this project. A: I hope Barcelona continues to fascinate the world for its emblematic urban design and new architecture. Now I hope that W Barcelona is enjoyed by people for a long time. I hope they enjoy “the Sail” as much as I have.

Hauntingly Haute

A Dark and Deep Fall Collection by SX Couture

by Adrienne Glenn

Designer, artist and over-all evil genius, Topher Adam Busenburg is a born creator. Alternative by nature, he breathes different and creative concepts into each piece of fabric he touches. I had the personal pleasure of seeing this wonderful spirit at work. After making me one of most delicious coffee drinks that have ever touched my lips and chivalrously pulling out my stool next to his work area, the master set to work. Before my very eyes, within the hour, the most amazing little hat was born; fur trimmed, wrapped in a lovely burgundy ribbon, with a tiny rodent skull atop it. This guy can put together the most original, yet wearable items in the blink of an eye and the twitch of nose. Elizabeth Montgomery you have met your match! A honest and forthright person, as well as a regular and proud user of some of the naughtiest of expletives (parents, you may want to censor this article)… Topher sits down to tell us a little more about the man, the myth and his Fall collection.

The Topher Adam Interview

What inspired your fall collection? When I was invited to participate in Austin Fashion Week as a lead designer they asked me to make clothes with lights on them. I was excited and confused at the same time. This new LED and EL tape technology was so new that it kinda put me on hold for awhile. I was so torn between doing what I love and what they were asking. I didn't know what to do. Hence, the name of the collection, "TORN." Do you have a favorite piece in this season’s collection? I do, I favor quite a few of the pieces. But there is a look that came about early on, it’s not in the series of photos but was on the runway at Austin Fashion Week. It is a man’s vest that I made out of neoprene and added the signature light element that would carry through the story in all the pieces. I love big, I love wild, and I love dramatic; I love using fabrics most people would frown down on. These kinds of fabrics make me happy because I know it is the part of design that I can break the rules with and make it uniquely Topher; and that is what makes my signature design aesthetic. What does fashion mean to you? Fashion brings back a lot of nostalgia and romance for me. I was born in the 70's, grew up in the 80's and started identifying with things in the 90's. I had the opportunity to watch great designers and amazing Fashion models walk the runways. I was around when MTV and VH1 started and all the music videos became a place to celebrate amazing and unique designs. Fashion isn't just a garment you wear, its something you have to be to embody it. It’s a character, a story, and it takes the wearer to understand its emotional mood to really wear it. Fashion is fun, it’s a show and it’s about being a total bitch rocker or a beautiful goddess of the night. It’s not all that commercial crap we buy in mass commodity. I like to believe you have to have PASSION for FASHION in order to know you are fashionable and to properly portray the garment you select to wear. Who are some of your favorite designers? LIKE, DUH! Vivian Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Terri Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, all the best designers from my time. I do love Prada, I do enjoy Theory and some other read to wear designers like Diesel, GStar and Energia. They all tend to be very Euro and I really enjoy the street fashion of the UK mostly.

If you could dress anyone (with a pulse) in the world who would it be? Helena Bonham Carter! She to me is the princess of darkness and I adore her!! I would also love to wardrobe a Tim Burton film and Johnny Depp. I love to dream about that. Maybe I am just a freak dat way YO! I would also love to dress superstar performers, do Broadway costumes, concerts and anything that takes that person into character. I love making a character come to life. Basically, anyone twisted enough to understand the value of my work. Do you have a favorite color? Well color is fun to talk about, fun to say my favorite Color/NON-Color is black, and then grey. But they are shades and not a color. If I do use colors, they tend to be muted, or over saturated. I don’t care for brights. I live in a mindset that “Everyday is Halloween” so I am happy when my use of a color

pallete is based on moods more than the color spectrum. Darker is always brighter to me! LOL. I know, OXYMORON. What do you dream about? Well, I am a dream designer, so in my sleep I design mostly. When I wake up I know exactly what I am going to do and work on. I also do daydream and these consist of being recognized for my talents, discovered, living a good life, taking care of my loved ones, not struggling anymore, traveling, not worrying about how to pay my bills or why I haven’t been able to be the one taking care of others. So, in the dark I dream designs and in the light I dream of what could be possible. I don’t want to die famous, I want to live as a famous artist. Can anybody wear SX Couture? Blahaahaa, I do make custom pieces. My collection is def made for a model and yes, I know, get your shit together Tophy and make clothes for everyone. My Mummy says that all the time. She, in fact, wants me to start a fashionable line for “FATTIES”! One day, I will be desirable and maybe hire a pattern maker to make size ranges. At this moment, I haven’t been asked to do such a thing. It’s more Fashion Art for me as a designer. My work is art and one day I will follow the rules and make a ready to wear line for everyone. I bet I may make money then. Do you have any advice for the young homo who dreams of spending his life draping lace across a form? I have given advice to many, many whom have shoved me in the corner and taken advantage of my help. The advice I have is, find out who you are before you start blasting what you think you are. A great designer is someone who doesn’t obsess over fashion and design, but rather lives and breathes it daily. I embody a lot of things in my work and I have worked long enough understanding who I am as a person. Once you discover your style and your look, your own story will embody it; embrace it, and never let anyone knock you down. Where will SX Couture be going next? Anything exciting in the pipeline? I am working on my new collection. I love this new collection. It’s different. I have to do something I believe hasn’t been done before, or at least TOPHY STYLE! I will be focusing on more tailoring and more of a polished dark story this time. Something that takes me to a different level… What is your most used parting phrase? My Mummy made up this strange thing when we were little. We would always walk up to her door and knock, she would open the door as she was smearing all this face lotion on and we would kiss her on the cheek and she would take her index finger, stab it down in the middle of our palm and say, “Pair of jockey shorts, see ya in the movies.” So I guess I tend to say that still. It’s funny how some of the craziest shit comes from your parents. Love you MUMMY! SO, PAIR OF JOCKEY SHORTS and SEE YA IN THE MOVIES! For more information on SX Couture, visit www.sxcouture.com.

The ‘May to December’ Romance by Jason Martineau

Fall 2012

Are you a ‘Sugar Daddy’ or a ‘Gold Digger’?

A

mong the many mandates and mythologies of love, one states that a person should choose someone close to their own age for a lover. The likelihood of the two of them having things in common, knowing the same movies and music, trends and fashions, and being at similar stations in life, might increase the chance that they will have a successful relationship together. Sounds logical enough, so does it work? According to a large study from Norway spanning 1966-2002, 30% of marriages were by people of a similar age, with the males usually being two or three years older. As the age gap widens, the percentages drop to 15% with a four or fiveyear difference, and 10% with a six or seven-year difference. Beyond there, the instances of marriages drop even below 5% – until the 10-year mark. At ten years they spike again at 15%! That trend has also been increasing over time. These statistics do not include unmarried relationships, however, which would likely skew the results further. Apparently far fewer marriages in which the woman is older than the man appear, after a year or two of difference (just 25% of all marriages). The usual explanation for why women seem to prefer slightly older men points to the fact that women have tended to mature at an earlier age, and also that traditionally men were expected to be the provider for the family, which required a certain age to be able to do so adequately. This all sounds rather limited and perhaps even sexist to our modern ears in 2012, but remember we are looking at almost 40 years of history, and gender roles have shifted and changed dramatically, and social conventions and expectations have relaxed to a great degree. So to what can we attribute this curious and distinguishing resurgence at the decade difference? One explanation cited is the phenomenon of “remarriage”. The man has already been married once, possibly has children, and at some point something happens, common enough to have received a name: the Midlife Crisis. Naturally this can happen for any number of reasons, but one version of it is somewhat consistent: a divorce ensues, he decides it’s time to change his career, buy a high-performance vehicle or motorcycle, start wearing designer clothes (if he wasn’t already), change his hairstyle (if he still has hair), maybe get a tattoo, and most importantly, start spending time with younger women. It is as if a fear of mortality stimulates a desire to have another pass at his more carefree youth, sometimes fueled also by the deep insecurities of regret, remorse, and unfulfilled dreams… Such a man often has achieved a certain financial status, which can help to support these life changes. In some cases, a man at 50 might take a lover who is 30, maybe a few years older than his daughter. Can this work? What happened to our “same-age” mandate? Yes, such relationships can and do work, but like all relationships, they are not without their challenges. Perceptions that a woman is looking for her father when dating older men are frequently mentioned. If the man wants to revitalize his virility, with or without Viagra, he will look to younger

women who exemplify the characteristics of heightened fertility, perhaps even start a second family. Some stereotypes appear, such as the man looking for a younger woman simply for company and for public appearances (“Arm Candy”), who perhaps he will support financially (“Sugar Daddy”), and if she is the type who looks for such men (“Gold Digger”), then it can be a mutually compatible arrangement for some length of time, or perhaps indefinitely. These labels may seem more like insults, but why should that be? The truth is that many May-December relationships do involve two people who genuinely enjoy and love each other. Whatever does or does not go on in the bedroom is not really for public concern, and such labels are usually devised by people who have not had that experience, as an expression of unnecessary scorn or derision. Likewise, there are people who fit those definitions quite well, and even if so, among consenting adults, arrangements and agreements of all forms can and do happen. What about cases in which the woman is older? There are famous celebrity examples, a most notable one being Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher (16-year difference), Ellen Barkin and Sam Ellison (31-year difference), Madonna and Guy Ritchie (10 years), Deborra-Lee Furness and Hugh Jackman (14 years), Joan Collins and Percy Gibson (32 years), Ivanna Trump and Rossano Rubicondi (24 years), and Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins (12 years), who were together for 23 years! Granted, not all of those relationships have lasted, but statistically they are no more volatile than close-age or older-man relationships. Despite a woman’s highest fertility being around the ages of 25-30, her highest sexual peak happens around ages 35-40. A man’s sexual peak is around 18-22, but of course in both cases there are numerous exceptions, and other factors that contribute, such as lifestyle, health, and DNA. Likewise, the average life expectancy of a woman surpasses a man’s by about 7 years. That’s quite poorly aligned! So who do you love? Should we align our sexual peaks? Or our ideal fertility ages? Or time it so that we die together? How truly predictable are those things? Is it always about money? Seeking our parents? Regardless of the motivation, if two people want to be together, is it so wrong if there is some measurable age difference? Cupid wears a blindfold in many of the artworks depicting him, across centuries, and so love can be blind to many things, including age. Ultimately, the foundation of any happy union is one of mutuality. When two people willingly choose each other, and find themselves on the same page, what more could they want? Whether May or December, Spring or Winter, lovers from any season can find each other in the Fall…

These labels are outdated and need to recognize the needs of the new reality! 75

Constantly changing the restaurants sometimes morose and other times whimsicle theme, Supperclub tranforms itself monthly keeping diners and dancers guessing what type of experience they are going to embark upon. Summer Camp, Hospital, Oasis, Firehouse, Spiders Den all are themes of the past and with Supperclub’s current head Chef Keith Hughes none of it matters when coming up with new and creative ways to deliver top notch fine dining with a twist. Clubbing and fine dining fused, Supperclub started in Amsterdam and now has 7 locations all over the world as far as Istanbul. No matter what location you visit each experience is different and intoxicating in memory. One of the most raucous places in San Francisco Supperclub is also one of the hottest places for corporate events hosting for Salesforce and Sony alike. Birthdays, bachelorettes, batmitsvas, corporate blowouts and the notorious “Breakfast In Bed” parties abound at Supperclub SF. Hunger for the obscure.

Czar by Cesar Galindo

Cesar Galindo is known for truly understanding the relationship between fabric and the female physique. In the past 22 years, Galindo has designed for notable brands such as L.A.M.B., Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, and his own red-carpet-ready label, Cesar Galindo Collection. With Czar, Galindo’s ultimate goal is to create garments that would flatter an array of personalities and fit a myriad of different body types. His collection this year was no exception. It proved to transcend size, age, and shape. If you’re a woman who’s seeking a mature, yet on-trend look, look into Czar.

Ruffian

Ruffian presented a collection that was their usual uptown chic with ladylike cocktail dresses and prim pencil skirts, but with a little edge reminiscent of the designers’ Williamsburg neighborhood. At first glance, the collection looks like its toile de Jouy prints were pulled from your grandmother’s curtains. At closer glance, we find the drawings created by John Gordon Gauld are actually depictions of neighborhoods in Brooklyn. We couldn’t imagine a more new-wave Marie Antoinette collection than this. Cue the New Order

BAYFashion’s Favorite Emerging Designers By Sarah Silva

Monique Lhuillier

Spring always brings about a multitude of garden-inspired collections, but Monique Lhullier sought natural inspiration elsewhere— underwater. Models floated down the runway wearing the most tropical colors with peplums that doubled as fins. The textures and prints varied enough to keep things interesting in Lhuillier’s underwater paradise; some dresses were decorated with Hokusai waves and others were sequined and glistening as if the sun was skimming their surface... but the most jaw-dropping of all had to be the beautifully cut gowns whose trains mimicked ocean-wave movement

Mara Hoffman

Back on shore, Mara Hoffman continued the tropical mood and opened up her show with a trio of young ukelele players. Once it started, the models walked down each with their own palm tree headpiece--Mara Hoffman is definitely serious about getting her vacation on. Garments that stood out were the ever-popular cropped bustiers, geometric, neon-printed frocks and short suits, and color blocked chiffon dresses in light salmon, cyan, deep pink, and red

Venexiana

With a total of 71 completely unique gowns, Venexiana was out to impress. Highlights included a dress with gold and silver glass beading that almost looked like small silver spikes across the room. Another gown included deeply shelled gold sequins that created the most alluring dimension at the skirt. Each dress was expertly draped and cut and were fitting to be worn at only the chic-est of balls, premieres, black-tie events, and major-league pageants. The on-site Miss Universe, Leila Lopes, could attest to that.

Jenny Packham

JJenny Packham is known for dressing the A-list in glamorous gowns. However, this time around, Packham packed in all the glamor of her full-lengths into more petite pieces. The show notes cited her inspiration as the women of the Rat Pack, meaning the bold Lauren Bacall, Shirley MacLaine, and Angie Dickenson. Her inspiration from the Vegas lights definitely shows in the beading, but with all of the delicate shift dresses and sparkling pastels, the collection looks a bit more Factory girl than Rat Pack woman.

Diane von Furstenberg

Diane von Furstenberg built her empire 4 decades ago on jersey wrap dresses and America has claimed her as their own ever since she opened up shop in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. This season, Furstenberg created a collection that reflected her bold American vitality through mixed print maxi dresses, belted jumpsuits, and color-blocking in red, white, and blue. Diane was willing to film the creation of her collection with Google Glass, a forthcoming head-mounted Google device that will allow users to record video and tap into the internet on vocal command.

Norisol Ferrari

One of the best things about watching a film from the golden era of cinema is getting to view the glamorous costumes of the 1940s and 1950s.The screen sirens of yesteryear were all dressed to the nines by the world’s most talented designers to accent the natural curves of female body. For Spring 2013, Norisol Ferrari brings back impeccable tailoring and the strong silhouette with a collection modeled off icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth. There were capris, full skirts, wide leg pants, slim pencil skirts, and legions of buttons. This is casual elegance at its best.

Carlos Miele

Sometimes, some of the best ideas come from a youthful mind. After a trip to the zoo, Carlos Miele’s two-year-old son illustrated the animals he saw with a colorful eye. After seeing his son’s depiction of a giraffe in blue, Carlos Miele was inspired to create, what he calls, a “hallucination jungle”. Miele kept things wild with flowing silk chiffon to create movement for his giraffe and tiger prints in gold, deep teal, and jungle green. Fringe handbags added to the wild element, but delicate beading at the collar kept things pretty.

Badgley Mischka

The dresses of the fairy folk have always been indescribably ethereal, as imagined in the mortal mind. After viewing the 1935 film adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka felt inspired to bring the film’s supernatural, haunting beauty to the runway. With a background of a woodland forest, gowns and the more casual pant suits paraded in the most ornate sunset golds and twilight slate blues.

Rachel Zoe

It’s been almost two years since Rachel Zoe unveiled her first collection. Though she’s new to the design world, her looks are becoming more and more polished. The Zoe girl this season was heavily influenced by cool European it-girls, Jane Birkin and Talitha Getty, in nude colors, the pairing of black and white, and her trademark heavy accessorizing. But for all the overseas glamor, Rachel Zoe is a California bohemian through and through. Laid-back cool was seen in her slouchy collars and bell sleeves; and of course, Rachel cannot resist a pantsuit. •

Candela

With Candela, designer Gabriela Perezutti, completely delved into a mixture of prairie and Victorian innocence. Scandal aside, her pieces exude a young Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby with flowers, ruffles, and straw hats. Include a beaded 1920s frock, and you’ve got a undoubtedly romantic look this upcoming spring. We loved how she took a signature bohemian vibe and managed to make it sophisticated, yet playful. The 15-look collection was simple, but still very complex

The William S. Paley Collection: A Taste for Modernism @ de Young Museum 9/15 - 12/30, 2012 A selection of major works from The William S. Paley Collection at The Museum of Modern Art, New York will be on view at the de Young September 15 through December 30, 2012. The Paley Collection is a markedly personal one, reflecting the broad tastes of a singular art collector, rather than one unifying historical period or theme. The work selected for the exhibition, The William S. Paley Collection: A Taste for Modernism, focuses on the extraordinary French School and School of Paris, late 19th- and early 20th-century artists who, like Paley, helped redefine modernism. Paley, founder and force at Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), was a leader in communication, entertainment, and broadcast journalism. His innovations in radio programming and advertising, his balanced commitment to entertainment and news dissemination, and his acute awareness of popular trends revolutionized broadcasting’s business model, and set new standards in broadcast journalism. Paley’s professional interest in emerging technology and new media undoubtedly encouraged his personal interest in modernist art. S. Paley Collection: A Taste for Modernism is organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, with which Paley was affiliated beginning in 1937. Serving as trustee, chairman of the Painting and Sculpture Committee, president of the Museum, and chairman of the Board, Paley was chairman emeritus from 1985 until his death in October, 1990. This exhibition, featuring more than 60 paintings, sculptures, and drawings, represents the accomplishments of many seminal artists, reflects the modern art patronage of a remarkable man, and celebrates his contributions to, as Robert E. Oldenburg, Director Emeritus of The Museum of Modern Art states, the very “fabric of modern life.” More Info: http://deyoung.famsf.org/

ZERO1 Biennial Seeking Silicon Valley 9/12 – 12/8, 2012 @Zero1 Garage, San Jose The 2012 ZERO1 Biennial theme and the core Biennial exhibition, Seeking Silicon Valley, was inspired by Silicon Valley’s globally renowned reputation as the hub of high-tech entrepreneurial innovation and networked creativity, as much as from the region’s conspicuous lack of publicly accessible features including borders, a defining architecture, a singular culture, and a cohesive sense of place. Biennial artists and the Biennial’s partnering organizations have been charged with articulating the 2012 theme Seeking Silicon Valley in all of the showcased performances, exhibitions, events and panels. For three months throughout the Bay Area the Biennial will feature installations, interactive media, sculptures, online works, videos and performances by artists who are utilizing technology to create contemporary art in original and provocative ways. The lineup of Biennial artists for 2012 include such notable art world figures as Lynn Hershman Leeson, whose new cinematic installation Present Tense – examining the human effects of global water toxicity and including high definition videos of babies swimming under water – will debut as part of the Biennial’s main exhibition, Seeking Silicon Valley. Partnering with eBay Inc., Jer Thorp, the New York Times’ lauded Data Artist in Residence, and Columbia professor Mark Hansen have been commissioned to create a data-driven work. The public can view the piece – which ties excerpts from classic literature to eBay listings and transactions – as it is projected on the Internet giant’s North Campus entrance starting September 12, 2012 when the Biennial launches. ZERO1 is where art meets technology to shape the future. As a 21st century arts nonprofit, ZERO1 works with some of the world’s most fertile and creative minds from the fields of art, science, design, architecture, and technology to produce the ZERO1 Biennial, an international showcase of work at the nexus of art and technology. ZERO1 is also the force behind the ZERO1 Garage, where principles of artistic creativity are applied to real world innovation challenges. Part incubator, part research lab, part think tank, the ZERO1 Garage informs strategies for research, development, and creativity. To find out more about ZERO1, visit www.zero1.org.

1 Deadmau5 “Professional Griefers” – Music Video

EDM’s biggest star drops 1st single to his new album, featuring an amazing vocal by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, blending dance music and rock. The video is awesome, showing both of them in a futuristic UFC style competition, where they control and fight robots. New album should take the superstar DJ to a new level!

2

Muse “Madness” – Music Video

4

After lighting up the Olympics with their 1st new single, Muse takes a softer approach. The 2nd single from their upcoming album, “The 2nd Law”, foregoes the stadium rock for a more electro groove that boasts another great vocal by Matt Bellamy. Some Muse fans might not like the softer sound, but its a catchy song that even has an awesome Queen-like guitar solo and a sexy cool video.

“Kill The Noise” Pt. 1 – Music Video

Jake Stanczak, the New York dubstep producer, known as Kill The Noise, has been gaining a huge name, signing to Skrillex’s label and co-producing tracks for Korn. This self-named track is a banger and has the dubstep feel of Skrillex, but still grooves like Daftpunk. The video looks like an awesome zombie killing save the world video game!

6

Ellie Goulding “Anything Could Happen” – Music Video

Still riding off her chart topping mega-hit “Lights”, this new single off her forthcoming album should take the British dance pop star to even more fans. It’s a huge electronic pop song, produced by Jim Elliot that shows off a soulful side to Goulding and the video is a beautiful piece of art.

3

Swedish House Mafia featuring John Martin “Don’t You Worry Child”

This amazing final track for the biggest trio DJ act in the world features once again the awesome vocal’s of Swedish born John Martin. SHM announced their final tour and split a few months back, shocking the EDM world, but with this track & video, they want their fans not to worry, as their legacy will live on through their music!

5

Grizzly Bear “Yet Again”

This 2nd track from this Brooklyn based indie rock band’s upcoming album “Shields”, is an enchanting song that when it opens, reminds of you of radiohead and that is not a bad thing. Beautiful harmonies mixed with great songcraft and a hypnotic beat.

7 Martin Solveig “The Night Out” LIVE – Madeon Remix

The French DJ/producer steps it up on this cover of his own track that got an awesome remix by another impressive French DJ Madeon. This version features Solveig on lead vocals for the 1st time, singing over an electronic groove and 20 live musicians all recorded live.

THE MUSIC Roundup

This Korean dance rapper has taken the world by storm with his hyper catchy tune. The video has spawned a viral frenzy, with an unbelievable 200M+ plays, featuring Psy’s dance moves, hot Asian girls and lots of fun! Psy is either a musical or marketing genius, but either way, he’s everyone’s favorite video muse for now!

9 Red Hot Chili Peppers “Long Progression”

If there is one thing to be said about the peppers, they always seem to come with a catchy melody and a big hook courtesy of lead man Anthony Kiedis. On this new B side jam, they don’t disappoint, with a pop rock funky track that should stay in your playlist for a while.

10 Greenday “Kill The DJ” – Music Video

Love this new song and video by the kings of garage punk! In this clever track, the video shows the punk trio cruising their hogs through the desert going to a Rave, where they show up unimpressed until they hit the stage turning partygoers violent, glowsticks and all.

Hey everyone, summer is officially over and were entering into fall release schedules, end of year shows & of course the holidays. Summer was amazing and fall should be just as exciting. EMERGING ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

New Diplomat

When this new alternative electronic rock band hit the San Francisco scene in 2010, it was like the United Nations just put together a new group, as all 5, band members, hailed from all over the world (Belgium, Italy, U.S, Argentina and Uruguay). 1st members consisted of Italy-Argentina’s Giovanni Goti on Synths & programmer, Belgium’s Jeff Pauly on drums, Italy’s Paolo Von Giordino on lead guitar and local boy Nathan Cenzer on bass. The lineup became complete in 2011, after a lengthy search for the right singer, enter Uruguay’s, Horacio O’Brien-Ferres. They immediately stormed the San Francisco local indie music scene with an awesome debut EP “Buy Yourself Some Freedom”, which was hailed as one of the best Bay Area releases of 2011 and landed them sold-out shows all over the country, sharing the stage with big acts like Garbage, Jane’s Addiction, Scott Weiland and more. The 6 song EP is an amazing fusion of indie rock and electronic music mixed with nice story telling lyrics and a beat that keeps you moving. The band is currently hard at work on their follow up debut and recently collaborated with hit producer, Dan The Automator (The Gorillaz, Kasabian) and recorded their 1st new single called, “Klash”, at San Francisco’s Trilogy studios. Its hard to believe that they have only been around for a year and at this pace, they won’t be one of the Bay Area’s best kept secrets for long. Technology Of The Month Presented by Pyramind (www.pyramindonline.com)om)

Imagine composing a Symphony by playing lasers, sound crazy? Well that was the dream of visionary, Jerry Riopelle, who as a kid, used to frequent an ice cream shop that had a laser triggered doorbell. When the Midi music formats hit the market, he wondered if that same concept could work for playing music. Decades later, his dream became a reality, as he introduced this innovative musical instrument, that gives “Play The Light”, new meaning, as you really play the laser beam lights. Introducing Beamz, a space age, musical product that looks like something out of the future and allows people of all ages to have fun creating and playing music. By breaking any 1 of the 6 laser light beams with your hands, you can trigger music, sounds, sequences and more like never before. Its connects right to your computer through USB, works with Apple or PC’s, has Midi mapping and you can have it come pre-loaded with a library of music and songs PI Tchaikovsky or create your own original work to play and it stores 30 full songs. If you’re a seasoned musician, it will be easier to compose & arrange, but it’s so easy to play and learn that any beginner can be playing the laser lights in no time. For LIVE performance, it looks amazing and with a little fog, the lasers light up the darkest stage. So with a little learning curve your fans and friends will be amazed, as you turn your show or party into a fun new-age musical experience. For more info go to: www.thebeamz.com

BAYFashion/Fresh Face of the Bay

Kelsie Gray

Tell us a little about you, what are your origins and where you grew up etc? Hi Im Kelsie, I grew up in a small town called Aromas, which I guarantee you have never heard of. My parents wanted to raise kids in the country where they thought it would be safest. Both of my parents are retired police officers so you could imagine how protective they were. The problem with living in the country was I always lived so far away from everyone. So for the longest time, making friends was really hard. I grew up pretty independent and I think I get that from both my parents. I feel blessed to have grown up the way I did, even though ill always say I hate the country, its still a huge part of what molded me into the person I am today. Great,How did you get into modeling? People always told me I could do it being that I was always tall and had good skin with freckles and pretty hair. But I never really took it into consideration until a photographer asked to work with me. I did a few shoots and realized how much I enjoyed it and how easy it was for me. I felt an fluidity and a confidence I hadn’t had before. How long have you been modeling ? I haven’t been modeling long at all. I started about 5 months ago, and I honestly just got really lucky. I have gotten a lot of work in the last 5 months and it almost seems surreal to have done so much in such little time. Have you taking any modeling classes at all ? No, I have never taken any modeling classes. I can see how it would help some people and I’m sure it would help me too, but I like to learn as I go and so far modeling has been something my body just gears towards. It’s like when a camera turns to me my body just focuses instantly without me thinking about it. I don’t think you can be taught how to model, It needs to be something in your heart that makes you successful. Tell us, how you stay fit ? I stay fit by taking care of my body. I put clean foods into it and I don’t put in more then it needs. A lot of people don’t realize how much your body needs and how much it doesn’t and I think that’s why so many people have trouble with weight. Its not all about diet though exercise is just as necessary. I either run 4 miles a day and do pilates classes or I religiously go to Bikram yoga everyday. There is no cheating when it comes to staying fit.You need to work to get the benefits. Give us a tip… tell our readers, you’re favorite healthy dish and how to make it So my favorite healthy dish that I created is spaghetti squash pasta. First you cut the spaghetti squash in half lengthwise, then you put in cut side down on a baking sheet and roast until its nice and tender. While its roasting, you quarter some heirloom baby tomatoes, crush about half a head of garlic, and rip some basil. Grab a big bowl and mix the tomatoes garlic and basil in with some olive oil, salt and pepper. You want to do this fast so it can sit for a while at room temperature for at least 20 minutes. Then when the spaghetti squash is done turn it face side up and scrape down to remove all the strands that look exactly like spaghetti. Add the squash to the bowl with the tomato mixture and at about 4 cups chopped spinach. It sounds like a lot but after you add it to the hot squash it will start to wilt down a lot. Add a little more salt and pepper and maybe a squeeze of lemon and you have a very healthy meal with very little effort required. That sounds delicious & healthy... Ok getting back to modeling, what are your long term goals as a model? I don’t want to be a model forever. I love it and its bringing me to great places and introducing me to amazing people, but I really love to write. I want to work for a fashion magazine writing the articles inside. I never want to let go of my love of fashion and photography so I want to put it all together with my passion of writing and see how far I can go with that. How do you see yourself progress in this field? I see myself developing myself in the modeling world. Meeting knew people and getting my name out there. But if I am to stay a model I want to be a good influence to people, a role model to other people. I want to be the model people see and know for more then my face. What would you say is the most challenging aspect of the job ? The most challenging part of being a model is dealing with people not liking you. It really is a doggy dog world when it comes to modeling and it’s hard to hear someone criticize you for things that are outside of your control. Like my freckles, or scars on my knees, or skin tone.

What’s coming up next for you? Hopefully while still modeling, I can get a job working for a magazine or interning. I really want to put my feet into the print world in more ways then one and hopefully while working on getting my degree from sfsu in journalism, I can also get that internship and model along the way.

Graphic Eye Liner

One of the biggest trends this season is graphic eye liner use. On the runway models wore eyeliner in different geometrical shapes to give the traditional eyeliner a modern twist. Most of us would hesitate to draw triangles and squares on our lids but we can always modify runway fashion according to our lifestyle and taste. Classic winged eyeliner will never go out of fashion. MAC Fluidline is among this season’s beauty must-haves. It comes in a variety of beautiful colors to give you a new look everyday.

Red lips can never go out of fashion. Brighten your face with the right shade of matte red lipstick. The most contemporary way of wearing red lipstick is to avoid any harsh edges. Dab lipstick on your lips and blend it with your fingers. For a classy look keep the skin flawless and eye makeup subtle. Russian Red, Viva Glam 1, Ruby Woo and Lady Danger are among beautiful red lipsticks by MAC.
