BAYFashion/ Featured Fashion Designer

Cory Couture Cory Tran Spring 2013 Cory Tran is one of the most talented fashion designers that I have met in the San Francisco Bay Area. It gives me a lot of pleasure to showcase his Spring 2013 collection in BAYFashion as we are dedicated to showcase our local talent in step with the best in the World and Cory is an example of raw talent that is seldom found. Cory is a self taught fashion designer, he has had no formal training in design and has learnt everything he knows from following fashion all his life. His inspiration comes from nature, animals and paintings of great artists. Based in San Jose, in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Cory spends half his time in New York and travelling internationally. This year Cory will be launching his collections in New York Couture Fashion Week, Vietnam Fashion Week and Dubai Fashion Week. Though he initially wanted to produce his clothes in Asia, he finally ended up deciding to stay in America with production because he wants to make sure that the quality of his couture wear is excellent and ‘made in the USA’. Cory is Vietnamese - American and he makes the Bay Area proud. To buy his designs or discuss projects e-mail him at corycouture@yahoo.com

Spring Love 2013

Zuhair Murad

GOLDEN AGE Reminiscence of past splendors with overtones of spirituality. There are gold ornaments aged with time , the patented sumptuousness of sculpted bas-reliefs are presented as an echo to celestial frescoes, the disturbingsong of angels, the virtuosity of trome-l’oeil vaults by italian sculptor Antonio Raggi , bringing to mind the aesthetic and sensitive shock of Roman church ..Such are the aesthetics, and then there is the movement , the empathy of a woman in keeping with her time in this couture collection by Zuhair Murad .

Spring Love 2013

JAN TAMINAU

The Spring-Summer 2013 runway scenario was nothing to be afraid of: serene piano music accompanied the models – who were wearing comfy strapped sandals – on the catwalk set at the sumptuous Hotel d’Avaray. A peach-colored embroidered evening gown with metallic lace, came with exaggerated pointed shoulders, while the emphasized hips of the final champagne embroidered wedding dress set a baroque tone. Despite of a few puffy and fluffy frilled evening jacket creations and the hand marbled cape-dress with an oversized bow, Jan Taminau introduced desirable and wearable, delicately laced and embroidered gowns with graphical patterns, suggesting Art Nouveau aesthetics – a promising sign for his future work.

21

Julien Fournie

Nude organza, bakelite, dresses made with the Parisian embroiderer Lesage, Walter Steiger stilettos and sandals … Julien Fournié has developed for this collection a new conscience of his style genes. Injected with whimsy and rebellion, Fournié was defined by high skirt slits, focal point detailing and covetable ornamentation. Boxy millinery and edgy hair from the orient complemented bold black and white graphics, oscillating towards fluid monochrome Japanese prints throughout the show. Embellishments were hyper feminine, from lace cutout backs to sequin encrusted wristbands and spidery sleeve-caps resting on the shoulders of several of the dresses.

BAYFashion/ Fashion Destination - Domaine de Chantilly Less than half an hour from Paris, the Chantilly Domain offers an exceptional voyage back in time: its château, the result of several centuries of development; its collection of paintings and manuscripts, one of France’s largest; its 240-hectare park illustrating the history of Western landscape design from the 17th to the 19th century; and its Grand Stables, which carry on the tradition of equestrian arts and performance. The Domain also bears witness to the history of the major French families and noblemen who built and occupied it: Anne and Henri de Montmorency, High Constables and advisors to François I, Henri II and Henri IV; the Grand Condé, cousin of Louis XIV and his descendants; and finally the Duke of Aumale, son of the last king of France all celebrated characters in the history of France who shaped the charm of this princely residence. The various rooms in the Château de Chantilly house one of France’s largest collections of French and Italian paintings as well as rare books and manuscripts: works by Raphael, Clouet, Poussin, Watteau, Ingres, Géricault, Delacroix and the famous illuminated manuscript of the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry. A tour of the museum’s collections is also an opportunity to visit the private living quarters of princes, with their galleries, rooms and masterpieces of decorative art. Built to pay tribute to horses, the entire Grand Stables complex is masterpiece of 18th century architecture. In addition to equestrian shows and music concerts, it offers the public an ideal place to discover an outstanding example of French heritage. http://www.chateaudechantilly.com/en/

The Civic Auditorium in Pasadena welcomed the pageant for the first time in their history with over 220 contestants competing for this prestigious title. Capeluj, a 21 year-old San Diego native, made her second appearance in the California pageant system, placing Top 10 in MISS CALIFORNIA USA® 2012. Diagnosed with Psoriasis at age 16, Capeluj hopes to work with the National Psoriasis Foundation to generate more awareness. Transitioning to Los Angeles, she plans to become a Broadcast Journalist. This year, the pursuit of the crown had expanded to include the first transgender competing for a state title in the 63 year history of Donald Trump’s MISS USA® and MISS UNIVERSE® organizations. 26 year old, Kylan Arianna Wenzel, was given the opportunity to enter officially and became the first transgender woman allowed to compete in a Miss Universe Organization pageant. The MISS CALIFORNIA USA and MISS CALIFORNIA TEEN USA pageants are judged by well-known celebrities and respected industry professionals on three main categories: interview, swimsuit and evening gown. All contestants are also reviewed on vital judging criteria including: character, poise, confidence and personality. the Interview Tam: Please Tell our readers a little about you: where you born, a bit of background… Keylee: I was born on a horse and cattle ranch in Louisburg, Kansas (which is just outside of Kansas City, MO). My father ran a worldwide construction company that my great grandfather started but his passion was animals so we lived outside the city and it was fabulous! I have loved fashion for as long as I can remember and have been blessed to spend my entire career, to this point, working in the industry. I have a degree in fashion design and have worked in every corner of fashion world possible; design, styling, personal shopping, buying, consulting, and more retail than I care to remember. I moved to LA about 12 years ago and started K2 Productions with my best friend, Keith Lewis. K2 Productions was created with the purpose of buying the Miss California USA and Miss California Teen USA license from the Miss Universe Organization. After 3 years at K2 and opened Style Studio and today I run Style Studio with a fabulous team of stylist and assistants and am the co-executive producer of K2 Productions. Tam: How long have you been part of the Miss California USA production? Keylee: I became involved with the Miss Universe Organization in 1995 when I was crowned Miss Teen USA (Miss Kansas Teen USA before that). I have been involved with Miss California USA since 2004 when Keith Lewis and I started K2 Productions. In total I have been in the pageant world for over 17 years. I literally fell into pageants when I was 17, I was never a “pageant girl” and did not grow up in the pageant world. In fact when I was convinced to enter my first pageant, I was a model in Kansas City, I clearly remember my mothers reaction; “are you crazy, why would you want to do that?” Once she realized I was serious about it and she saw the benefits of the USA system she quickly became my biggest cheerleader. Tam: For those who are not familiar, can you tell us, what the contest consists of? Keylee:The state systems are run just like the national Miss USA and Miss Teen USA events. Each contestant competes in evening gown, interview, and swimsuit all weighing equally. We have a preliminaries, in which every contestant competes, and then it is cut down to a group of finalist who re-compete in the three categories until we have one winner! Tam: What are the main creterias of eligibility? Keylee: Each young woman who competes in Miss California USA or Miss California Teen USA has to meet the same eligibility requirements to compete- set forth by the Miss Universe Organization (NBC & Donald Trump). They must meet the age requirements, resident of the state in which they are competing, citizen of the United States, never been married, never had a baby and each contestant signs a morals clause. Tam: Are there any weight or height requirements? Keylee: No, we have girls of all shapes and sizes compete and win! Our last Miss California USA, Natalie Pack, was 6ft tall with no shoes on and our current Miss California USA is 5’5”. Beauty queens come in all sizes! I was a national titleholder and I am only 5’7”, our current Miss USA is 5’6”, it is all about the girl, not about her height. The USA system does encourage a healthy figure, not stick skinny, but a healthy and physically fit body is important as well. Tam: How is the selection process? Keylee: In the state of California, and in all three of the K2 states, we have an open application system. This means anyone can fill out an application and apply to compete (www.misscaliforniausa.com). The next step is to meet with our recruitment team for a one on one interview and to gather information about the event. Once the contestant has met with the recruiter and if she is accepted into the contest then she enrolls, pays her entry fee and receives her area of representation. Tam: The contestants on Miss USA are usually a good mix of more seasoned experienced models with the newbies. How do you make sure there’s diversity? Keylee: In California we naturally get a good mix of girls, our state is very diverse! Many girls see the advantage the contest can give them in the entertainment world. Many well known actresses and tv hosts were involved in pageants (Diane Sawyer, Halle Berry, Eva Longoria, Maria Menudos, Oprah Winfery). Other girls see the event as a great addition to their resume or collage application and a way to build self confidence. We get a lot of working models and actresses, especially from the Los Angeles area.

Kaylee is the owner of Style Studio: www.keyleesanders.com Potential contestants or sponsor can get more information at: ww.misscaliforniausa.com

interview cont’d Tam: How long do the contestants have, to prepare before the show? Keylee: Some girls have been preparing for years and others will start a few months before the competition. Depending on how much work the contestant feels she has to do and what that work is! We have girls enter who have lost over 100 pounds in oder to compete. This was the first year that the national organization changed the rules and allowed transgenders to compete and the state of California had the first transgender to compete in the United States. Girls work on their bodies, minds, they raise money through sponsors, practice walking, interview, and of course my favorite plan and purchase their wardrobe! It is a LOT of work to prepare properly! The chance to be a USA titleholder is a huge opportunity! As a national titleholder myself I was able to advance my career in fashion in ways I would have never imagined! I was able to meet and work with designers I admired, traveled all around the country, and then was able to start my design career based on my name in the industry! Girls know what they have to gain by preparing properly and most of them take it very seriously! Tam: What is the best and the worse situation you’ve experienced while managing such a large group of girls? Keylee: We have a lot of positive stories when it comes to our girls. Between the three K2 states (CA, NY, and NH) we manage around 900 girls each year and the positive defiantly out weighs the negative. I won’t deny that at times it gets a little crazy behind stage during competition. You can only imagine what a dressing room with 250 beauty queens looks like! We have had almost every situation happen at one point or another; fire alarms with sprinklers going off 30 minutes before the competition and soaking contestants, boyfriends trying to come into the girls rooms through balconies, you name it we have dealt with it. We also have so much positive! Our girls become part of our K2 family, we work with all of our contestants through out the year attending red carpet events, working with them on social media, inviting them to charity events and they get a chance to build an amazing network of women! I met my best friend seventeen years ago when I competed at Miss Teen USA and as cheesy as it may sound these girls really do find a connections between each other and end up becoming great friends!

. . . c t E Love

‘Valentines’

Saint Valentine’s Day, so commonly celebrated in the Western world, originated during the latter portion of the Medieval Era as an expression of love and appreciation. Valentinus, a third-century Roman saint, was jailed for officiating secret wedding ceremonies to soldiers who were otherwise forbidden to marry. He was purportedly executed for this on February 14th. Likewise on February 15th, the pagan fertility holiday Lupercalia, in honor of the god Lupercus (who was the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Pan), was annually observed in order to sire boys into manhood. A lottery was held on this day during which young women’s names were written on little slips of paper, then drawn randomly by men to select who would be their companions for the rest of the year. This practice often led to marriage. The combination of these auspicious days eventually evolved into the custom of men seeking the attention of women by giving them slips of paper, notes, and cards – valentines. With every gesture of kindness and thoughtfulness, the flower of a growing and glowing love blossoms. Lovers exchange gifts – valentines, candies, chocolates – symbolic things that later might become sentimental tokens (if they are not consumed). Likewise thoughtful acts, demonstrations of attention, care, familiarity, and appreciation, are also gifts, and communicate the same desire to adore, express, and acknowledge each other’s value. Sounds like a pretty good deal – presents, adoration… definitely a holiday worth keeping around! As with most “holy days”, the trend toward commercialization evolves, and stores begin stocking the wares of companies creating all forms of cards, both humorous and serious (and blank), most commonly with images of hearts, not to mention the most frequent gifts: flowers, confectionery goodies, and jewelry. These tokens have become a regular feature of this yearly celebration of love. The question that eventually arises with this holiday, as with any that has been commandeered and transformed (and homogenized) by the free market system: why are we limiting these “extra” expressions of our feelings to just one day in the year?

If we are in love, do we not love throughout the year? Indeed it is important to take the extra time and effort to express our feelings, and to have traditions and special days, but perhaps we can consider making love a part of our daily lives, to infuse ourselves and our beloved with surprises and freshness, tender reminders of whatever is in our hearts. Our beloved may already know what we feel and think about them, but even still, thoughtfulness rarely goes unappreciated. The currencies such gifts often use typically represent fertility and beauty. All things that are sweet, fragrant, or radiating life, hope, and optimism, embody the unseen but well-felt energy that lovers feel. Of course the optimal time of year for these expressions is Spring. Spring is the season that brings with it rebirth, and the beginning of a new life cycle. If it is a courtship, such gifts may serve to impress upon each other a sense of reliability and worthiness, in hopes of improving the candidacy of the prospective companion. In turn, the foundation for noble values such as gratitude, humility, honor, and respect, are being laid down, also strengthening the potential for the future.

“If we are in love, do we not love throughout the year?”

At times this manner of impressing each other can go to great extremes, leading as well to the possibility of the deterioration of intense feelings later, when such acts may have less frequency. This is a common psychological trap that bears no real implication, and is easily avoided by keeping such strong efforts and demonstrations balanced and authentic. This in turn supports a more enduring and sustainable love. Hormones may be raging at this time of year, and the birds and the bees are certainly letting us know, but it may also be wise to consider spreading our loving gestures across time… either way, a little champagne and strawberries are never a bad idea…

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2013 Collections

Tadashi Shoji - Fall 2013

Tadashi Shoji’s current collection seems to have many inspirations. Clear visible influences included Russian Czars and the Romanov Dynasty and romantic movies from the era. Vintage-inspired gowns, cinched waists, lace, velvet gowns that swept the floors and fitted silhouettes. Tadashi pulls off the Velvet pieces incredibly well, special mention goes to the floor lenght Red Velvet gown (2nd from left below) which could be seen on some red carpets soon in Hollywood and abroad. There were the equisite strapless and single strap cuts dresses in the collection but the abundance of long sleeve, cap sleeve dresses were a little surprising. Some sequins and feathers and some practical evening wear rounded up the collection for the coming season and overall we can expect to see about 50% of these dresses on some or the other celebrity very soon.

New York, NY, Friday, February 8, 2013 – Every designer dreams of showing their debut collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and this season that dream is coming true for ten talented designers from the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University. Since 2005, the School of Fashion has premiered the collections of recent graduates during New York Fashion Week. “Part of our commitment to the designers is to help launch their careers and have their collections seen by industry professionals,” said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University. “ For the Fall 2013 season, there were seven women’s wear collections, one of which was a collaboration between Fashion and Knitwear Design students (Janine & Amanda), and another that is a collaboration between Fashion Design, Textile Design, and Jewelry Design students (Teresa, James & Leah). BAYFashions favorite collection among the AAU’s lineup came from Qian Xie. Qian’s collection displayed the maturity of a seasoned designer and the finesse and finish of a master. The subtle geometric silhouttes combined with soft and fluffy frabric like cashmere and loup. The use of wool in a structured haute couture suite ‘Mariana’ was also very impressive and shows as rare level of taste and capacity to edit that takes years to master. Our other favorite looks were ‘Mikaela’ by Chenxi Li , and ‘Akoul’ by Heather Marie Scholl. We are excited to work with Academy of Art in showcasing these collections on BAYFashion Magazine issues in the coming Fall season.

For the designer’s fifth season at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Son Jung Wan presented a well edited collection featuring jewel tone gowns, chic felt neutral jackets and carmel pleated wool dresses. Inspired by two Russian greats, Kandinsky and Catherine Palace, she used ox blood red, Sapphire blue, and violet accents to punch up the neutral palette of beige, gray and metallic. The show’s final looks included a jaw dropping fox fur coat with sequins and a chic gold sequined tank jumper.

Fur, Faux Fur, Polyster Jackets, Leather Jackets, Trench coats & Turncoats. Sacramento Fashion Week

The Show Sacramento Fashion Week (SACFW) now in its 7th year is among one of the most highly anticipated fashion events in Northern California. Over the past three years SACFW has grown from a weekend event, to a full week of events gaining the exposure and support of various local businesses and organizations as well as spreading brand awareness to outer areas. Previous years SACFW was produced by Magnum Opus Enterprises but this year the show gets a new production company DMR Productions taking over the reigns., The last two year was under the direction of Duane Ram who has since branched out to form DMR Productions as the producer and Executive Director, along with Will Rodriguez as the co-producer and Creative Director.

The Lineup

The goal of the production is to create an atmosphere that promotes collaborative efforts. SACFW helps serve as the bridge between the many local industries that make up the interconnected world of fashion. To that end the producers seek out designers on the “cusp of greatness to provide an opportunity to bring recognition and connections to these indie labels. This year, Sacramento Fashion Week will feature a Boutique Showcase, and two Designer Showcases to wow and delight the fashion-forwards. The Boutique Showcase will give a nod towards locally owned clothing boutiques for their work in curating great fashion finds from around the world. Each boutique featured in the showcase has a special niche they provide to their customers. The two Designer Showcases of the week brings to you Northern California designers and students who have shown through design ingenuity they have the potential of sharing their designs with the world - they just need the discovery and exposure to highlight their craft.

and Springtime Pisco Sours When residents envision spring in San Francisco, they think of bright colors, fresh approaches and a chance to finally take off those layers. Then make your way to La Mar for a springtime renewal and don’t wait for March 21st! On the Embarcadero, with a floodlit airy interior and with electric blue and brightly colored decor, La Mar lightens your mood immediately.

La Mar is located at: Pier 1.5 The Embarcadero San Francisco, CA 94111 Phone:(415) 397-8880 Prices: $50 (avg per person) Hours: Daily 11:30 am - 10 pm http://www.lamarcebicheria.com

Their signature drink, the pisco sour, in keeping with the Peruvian heritage of the restaurant, is a light and fresh mix of Pisco and egg whites, giving a subtly smooth sour taste. It will freshen your mood and warm you up at the same time (Pisco is a type of brandy) so much so that you can take off your layers and sit on the patio to enjoy the view of our Bay. If you pass over a pisco sour, they also have great cava and very strong heatlamps. The fresh Cebiche Sampler (like ceviche but Peruvian) is the most popular dish, made with sushi grade halibut, yellowtail, tuna, octopus and salmon with a lemon and brine sauce . The plaintain chips served with it are just as light and delicious as the cebiche. Causas are a potato-based dish made famous in Peru during the war when grandmothers would sell them on the street to raise money for the war “cause.” They are substantial but light and fresh enough to turn any dedicated Atkins eater into a potato lover. There were many options; my top favorites were with Dungeness crab on top of a yellow potato causa with avocado purée, quail egg, cherry tomatoes, aji amarillo huancaina sauce, and basil cilantro oil. The vegetarian version was amazing with yellow potato causa, artichokes, asparagus, avocado and tomato confit with basil cilantro oil. Although I’m a diehard cebiche lover, my favorite dish was the causa sampler. All dishes, table settings and food had such bright colors from the purple and yellow potatoes, bright sauces, and vibrant vegetables that I was in a happy place for Spring. The strapless nectarine colored dress I wore felt like it finally had a place to be seen in San Francisco. There was a company party in the private dining area, a birthday party in the large entry room with the grand table, and a groom’s rehearsal dinner was coming to use the patio after I left. All the normal scenes of life on the Embarcadero seemed newer and fresher while dining at the delicious La Mar. It could be that it was springtime and I was at La Mar, or it could be that La Mar embodies the spirit of Spring. Eitherway, I walked out with a Spring in my step.

Sublime ceviche headlines the menu of world‐class Peruvian plates at celeb chef Gastón Acurio’s very popular South American seafooder where knowledgeable servers navigate an enchanting Embarcadero setting; whether you drink sophisticated cocktails in the gorgeous bar or snag outdoor seating (the best for killer Bay views), it’s so much fun, as long as money is no object and you’re prepared to embrace the loud, high‐energy scene. ‐ Zagat

You can't go wrong with any ceviche, especially the cebiche classico, with California halibut in a classic tigre de leche sauce kicked up with citrus and habanero. It's cooled by large hominy‐like kernels of corn and slices of sweet yams. The halibut has a great texture, and its flavor is lightly infused with spices. – The Chronicle, Michael Bauer 05/2012 La Mar Cebicheria Peruana • Pier 1 ½, (Embarcadero) • San Francisco • CA • 94111 • Reservations : (415) 397‐8880 • www.lamarsf.com

A Fairytale High Fashion Wedding

Glowing and glamorous described both the bride and the venue on the evening of January 11, 2013 as the publisher of BAYFashion, Chris Rojas, married his love of two and half years: Kelly Jackson. What better place than the 1915 landmark of the city where they met? This French Renaissance style Beaux Arts gem is the ‘something old’ for any lucky bride! The couple chose City Hall as the venue for its gorgeous marble interior and beautifully sculpted and engraved Rotunda. The hall’s restored 24-karat gold dome inspired gold table settings within and the special gold of attending family and friends, dressed formally in black tie to match the building’s iconic beauty and romantic ambiance. Its gorgeous interiors were enhanced by Immersive lighting which shaped the mood as the wedding progressed by changing colors on the walls. They served the Brides favorite champagne, delicious and appropriate “Wedding Cuvee” by Iron horse Vineyards. For more information about the venue please contact: Elsie D. 1

“Where Are We Now”

The thinking white duke storms back with his 1st single in over a decade! It’s a lush, synth driven ballad, that lets Bowies laid back, vocals shine. The video is a beautifully strange throwback to Bowie’s Berlin days and shows him and an unidentified woman looking out. Love it!

7

“I got a boy”

1st Psy with Gangnum style and now Korea’s hottest all girl group storms the States with this mashed up, R & B meets dance club hit. The video is already gone viral reaching over 40M+ views and showcases all 9 members singing, rapping, dancing, mostly in Korean, but they sound & look so fresh, you almost understand every word.

Vintage Trouble

“Blues Hand Me Down” Vintage Trouble has been storming up the scene with their amazing throwback 50’s & 60’s soulful rock sound that is a blend of Hendrix & Otis Redding with the energetic live presence of James Brown. This amazing live show from Letterman, where they got a standing O, commands our attention!

Frank Ocean

Andre 3000 & Big Boi 5 Featuring Outcasts “Pink Matter” (Remix) The R & B crooner Ocean gets Outcast partners Andre 3000 & Big Boi to appear on a track together for the 1st time in years. The original track off Oceans Channel Orange album only featured Andre 3000, but this clever remix got Big Boi to add his lyrical genius to an already awesome tune!

Thom Yorkes side project with Flea and Nigel Godrich drops their coolest single and it’s a dreamy dark blend of beautiful radiohead like vocals, courtesy of Mr.Yorke, over big synths and a simple drum beat. The video shows artwork by Tarik Barri.

9

Snoop Lion

“Here Comes the King”

Rap superstar Snoop Dogg took a trip to Jamaica, where he had a revelation and returned as a reggae loving lion – its true! Whether you like the change or not this 1st peak, is an infectious reggae infused dub-step groove, produced by dance superstar Diplo and shows Snoop singing and rapping like a rasta-man.

4

“Danger”

Dubstep king leaves the wobble wobble behind for a more chilled out vibe, which is probably why he picked the name. On his new single, he shows us that he is not just a one trick pony, with cool melodic synths & a nice vocal sample. Might lose some core fans, but he will make it up with a new flock of Skrillsters.

Girls Generation

3

Katy B x Jacques Greene

The UK rave princess turned R & B singer explores her softer side with her new EP and single entitled, “Danger”. This single, with the help of, Jaques Greene, is a slow downed electro balad about love gone wrong – her vocals are cut deep and the video is just full of smoke. LOL

I have to say, I never thought I would be listening to Willow Smith, but Will Smith & Jada Pinketts offspring has made me a believer – on this haunting ballad, her beautiful voice sores over an electronic Radiohead sample and you can’t help but get sucked in or believe she’s only 12.

Underworld

“Rez”– Bassnectar remix UK electronic act Underworld gets a facelift by Ace of bass superstar Bassnectar and it’s a ultra-sick remix, that is not only melodic, but with Bassnectars signature basslines and progressive build-ups, its just an epic mega rave fist pumper.

Talent Finder Emerging Rap Sensation

Darling Bonnie

The Bay Area has always been a breeding ground for art and music of all kinds and in the world of Hip Hop, so many big names including; E-40, Tupac, The Luniz Too Short & the Hieroglyphics crew have worked their way from pushing their music on the streets to huge mainstream appeal and legendary status, so its no surprise that the, “Darling gift to the rap game”, as she calls herself, is an Oakland native, introducing, Darling Bonnie. Born Ashley Nicole Best, growing up in Oakland wasn’t a horror story for her, but more like an urban fairytale, which she embraces with great pride. She started penning her own music at the early age of 7 and this passionate gift, that she credits to her late father, lead her to form her 1st female Hip Hop duo in 2006 with childhood friend Angelique Johnson. They auditioned for TVT recording Artist the A’z and after they spit a 16 bar verse, the guys immediately decided to get behind their dream and coined the girl group with the name, “Honey N Da Bank”, as well as singing them to their label, Wingteam. The new duo, found moderate success and completed their 1st mix-tape titled, “Valley of the dolls”, but after the release, the label filed bankruptcy, dropping all acts and the girls decided to also part ways. This did not stop Bonnie’s drive for success as she began plotting her solo plans, finishing a new music demo and aggressively marketing herself and this determination lead her to her 1st management deal with Rise N Shine Entertainment in 2011. She currently is working on her debut album and is planning to drop a new single this month called, “Publicity Stunt”, that will feature Bay Area Hip Hop legend E-40. Her live shows have also sparked attention with her good looks, energetic flow and captivating stage presence. She is definitely one new artist to keep your eyes on as she continues her dream of becoming the next big thing. www.darlingsociety.com

Tiesto, David Guetta, Timo Maas these are just a few, but I’m always looking to the future and Danny Howard from London England and Richard Beynon from Canada are the ones to look out for next! SBP: You’ve opened up for U2, Madonna and many other superstar acts, how was that experience? PO: The experience is wonderful but you have to realize you’re playing to a mainstream commercial crowd so the music I play, has to change.

The Disc Jockey to Watch Ron Reeser

No stranger to the Electronic Music Industry, San Francisco Bay Area native, Ron Reeser has continued to rise as a house music favorite and has been quoted as, “One of SF’s best kept secrets in electronic dance music. From club tours to festivals this DJ/producer has been lighting up dance floors for more then a decade with his progressive house sound that has put his remixes and original tracks at the top of the itunes and Beatport music charts. As a kid he started playing keyboards at the age of seven, then quickly turned to drums, giving him a rhythm background. It wasn’t until he became a rave promoter and found electronic dance music that he really found his musical love. Not being able to fill his musical void as just a promoter, Ron changed his full-time focus to becoming a DJ and after honing his skills as a producer, he exploded on the dance scene with his single, “Promises”, which quickly gained major support from some of the biggest names in dance including Roger Sanchez, PVD & DJ Dan and within its 1st 2 weeks it climbed to the Top 10 Charts on Beatport.com. In early 2009, he joined International powerhouse Ultra Records and continued to put out hit releases. He has remixed songs for multiple major artists including Adele, Maroon 5, Deadmau5, Beyonce, Kaskade, Gotye and many more. His remix of Deadmau5’s “Raise Your Weapon” & Jes’s “Awaken”, were put into regular rotation and in 2011 they both hit the #1 spot on BPM - America’s leading Dance Station. Ron Reeser knows what it takes to make it in a world where, “Everyone Wants To Be A DJ”, and doesn’t take his newfound success lightly as he works around the clock, to cement his name in the Dance industry as a DJ & producer to watch. Listen to Zedd featuring Foxes- Clarity – Ron Reeser Bootleg www.ronreeser.com SBP: Your music score & soundtrack for the big feature film, Swordfish, staring John Travolta, Halle Berry & Hugh Jackman, was brilliant, are you doing more soundtracks? PO: Not at the moment, I’m focusing on finishing my new artist album SBP:What do you think about the current explosion of EDM into Pop Culture in the U.S? PO: I like it and I think it’s great for the scene. (Everyone’s a DJ) SBP:There are so many EDM acts & DJ’s everywhere now, headlining big festivals, TV shows and commanding 6 and 7 figures per show. Do you feel like you were ahead of the curve? PO: Yes. SBP: Who inspires you in music today? PO: ZZ ward, Wallpaper, Miguel & Allen Stone SBP: Do you think EDM is here to stay or has it peaked? PO: It’s only just started. It’s been going in England for 25 years! Get ready America, we ain’t going away soon!!! SBP: Whats next for Paul Oakenfold? PO: My 3rd artist album Check out more on Paul Oakenfold at www.pauloakenfold.com

Martel & Nabiel

The If there were ever two names that stick together like glue, it’s Martel Toler and Nabiel Muslah, known to friends as Martel & Nabiel of San Francisco based M&N Promotions. Friends since their teens, these two entrepreneurs came together for their love of house music and quickly gravitated to the early 90’s warehouse party scene. They started staging parties under the name, “Five Foot Tongue”, renting out warehouse space in San Francisco. They then launched, “Release SF”, which found a home at DV8 nightclub, known today as Temple SF. The party was a huge success and later moved to 1015, where they enjoyed a weekly crowd of 2000+ people, showcasing some of the biggest International DJ’s. Other successful parties by this dynamic duo included; “Plastique”, “Séance”, “Backflip”, “Eye-Spy”, “Square”, “Wet” and the “Leopard lounge. Release SF is currently celebrating 20 years and although it’s not a weekly anymore, M&N stage a few special Release events a year. Expanding on their success, M&N opted to turn proprietors, opening “Sushi Groove”, which has become a favorite San Francisco sushi spot and their newest spot, “Harlot SF”, has become one of San Francisco’s coolest nightclub lounges. What makes them successful is not only their endless networking, but they are personable, spending time with everyone and that is what keeps them coming back. They are like chameleons, changing with the times and always looking for a unique opportunity to bring to their self-made empire. More info: www.harlotsf.com

Best tips about hair styling and hair care for the readers:

And her work was featured in our 2012 Annual Swimsuit Issue

Minerva: Always use a thermal protectant on your hair before using any kind of heated tool. You don’t have to go to the salon to treat yourself to a good conditioning treatment. Once a week clarify your hair, followed by a deep conditioner. Use a hot wet towel to wrap your hair for at least 10 min. Your hair will look amazing.

Hair cut style Do’s and Don’ts:

Minerva: I don’t think that jellyroll bangs will ever come back in style and if they do I will not be on that bandwagon, LOL!

Sometimes you’re on the run and you forget your make-up bag. What to do when you have only two cosmetics to work with? Help is on the way... Learn these neat tricks to control the situation, and make the best of it.

ONLY BRONZER & LIP BALM “The bronzer can be applied on the outer perimeter of the face and cheek area. The Bronzer also can be used as eye shadow. After applying lip balm, using your fingers dab bronzer on your lips. This is a natural earthy look and a quick easy improvise.” ONLY CHEEK TINT & MASCRARA “Cheek tints can also be used as lip color. In the event of a pink or peach cheek tint it can also be applied like a cream shadow using your finger tips. The mascara can be applied on the lashes. Mascara can also be used to fill in brows or temporarily cover gray hairs.” ONLY LIGHT & BROWN EYE SHADOW “Well not only do you have two eye colors to work with but you also have a hilighter and contouring powder because you can used the brown to contour and shape the face in the hollows of the cheeks and around the outer perimeter of the face. The light color can be applied to the brow bone, nose ridge, cheek bone, upper lip and chin for a more hi-lighted look.” ONLY CONCEALER & BROWN EYE PENCIL “Concealers can be applied anywhere it is needed to even out skin tone. The Eye pencil can be used to give your eyes a smokey look. The warm brown tone eye pencil can also be used to contour the face if applied very lightly and blended using the concealer and your magical finger tips. (This one takes a little practice)”

Photographer: Gail Bowman Model: Shelby Will Makup: Marisol Garcia Hair: Nadia Mohammadpour

ONLY CLEAN HANDS “All of these tips can be applied with a brush or sponge but if you forgot your makeup bag chances are that you don’t have those either. So, remember clean hands can be your best tools because the warmth of the fingertips help blend the product effectively. Don’t worry, practice makes perfect!”
