letter from the editor We are at the dawn of a new year, a defining year for the future of fashion in the San Francisco Bay. There has been a resurgence in the importance and visibility fashion in San Francisco and we want to believe that BAYFashion had a significant role to play in that. We now stand as the only fashion magazine which is published locally in San Francisco, to be available on newsstands around the bay with an expanding presence in Southern California. This February BAYFashion will bring you live feeds from New York Fashion week, as the fashion unfolds on the runways of the Big Apple. This year we will also be bringing you complete coverage of the biggest fashion weeks from LA, Sacramento, Paris, Berlin and Milan. BAYFashion now has yearly contracts with some of the largest brands in the US and the World solidifying our place in the magazine industry and giving us a strong foundation to build upon, a future we believe is directly linked to where San Francisco stands in the world of fashion. After all we define San Francisco Fashion and San Francisco defines us... Enjoy the issue. Happy New Year!

Many lady dancers with suggestive names became famous : la Goulue (the glutton) - the Toulouse-Lautrec’s muse - Nini Pattes-en-l’Air (a leg-over), Grille d’Egout (drain cover), la Môme Fromage (kid cheese)… Today, some 120 years after its first steps were made, the French Cancan is still presented every night on the Moulin Rouge stage, and has been in every show since then.

The Moulin Rouge, world-wide famous thanks to its French Cancan, and immortalized by the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, has always presented sumptuous shows to its spectators. From Valentin-le-Désossé and la Goulue’s Quadrille to the Redoutes and Operettas, from Colette to Mistinguett‘s great revues …the concept is still the same at the Moulin Rouge. Feathers, rhinestones and sequins, fabulous settings, original music and of course…the most beautiful girls in the world ! Many international stars have performed on stage at the Moulin Rouge including Ella Fitzgerald, Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, Elton John… The French Cancan The 6 th of October 1889, the Moulin Rouge opens its doors and welcomes for the first time on stage some young girls who perform a very different dance from the others : the Quadrille. Revolutionary movements, screams, boisterous rythm … frills and flowing skirts are lifted to show the young dancers’ legs and reveal their daring lingeries. Most of the time, the dancers were “amateurs”, who by day were mainly washerwomen, linen maids, laundresses, seamstresses, and who transformed themselves into Quadrille dancers at night. This new dance was a success and immediately attracted the crowds : middle-class people, princes, artists, writers…they all came for a little fun ! Two years later, the Quadrille was still fashionable and spread abroad, to the other side of the Channel. A British subject named Charles Morton decided to change the name of the dance and call it “French Cancan”, A funny dance that makes a lot of noise and comes from France !

14

The Bal du Moulin Rouge

And dancing the French Cancan is not possible for everyone ! For this dance requires specific qualities both artistic and physical. A training period of five weeks is necessary for every new girl and the rehearsals are very frequent. The Moulin Rouge’s French Cancan is famous and reclaimed world-wide. Be it for the Cannes Festival, Hollywood or even Hong Kong, the Carnival of Rio, Sydney, the troupe of Cancan dancers never hesitates to cross the frontiers to represent the Moulin Rouge and Paris. The one and only original French Cancan is, and will always be, the one performed at the Moulin Rouge. Supervised by Henri Poussimour, the Moulin Rouge’s Brigade, which consists of 120 maître-d’s, headwaiters and waiters, works in the legendary hall which accommodates up to 900 guests. Every night, 25 cooks prepare the meals served to the clients. BAYFashion had the unique opportunity to shoot a Wedding Fashion editorial at this historic location of infinite significance to the world of Haute Couture. During the shoot we not only wondered about the unique backdrops and the history of the place... and wondered how grand the wedding held here might be... but also realized that this is a destination that honeymooners in Paris should never miss. It will leave you breathless!!

This photoset was shot at the Moulin Rouge Paris by BAYFashion European Fashion Director Greg Alexander. The Moulin Rouge is available for elaborate weddings and private events

The Romance of the Gown...

Jan 2013

Every girl dreams about the day they would go to pick out their wedding dress. Hiding from their fiance as they explore rack after rack of dresses that seem to all look the same. At Jin Wangs studio in San Francisco, all the dresses are one of a kind. You can look in awe or you can have both Jin Wang and her assistants work with you to find the perfect dress for your wedding day. Make it something special and check out her studio, because nothing makes getting married feel more real and more exciting then the moment you find the perfect bridal gown. (left & below) Ivory lace mermaid gown with black French grosgrain ribbon belt. Gown only $2530

35

Simplicity is what makes a classic wedding gown beautiful. The innocence of a white dress with subtle detail brings all the attention to where it belongs, the bride herself. Its the beauty in the girl that makes the dress radiate in elegance. This dress by Jin Wang will make the bride shine without all the sequins.

THE FAIRMONT in SAN FRANCISCO When you find the perfect dress, the next step is the perfect location. At The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, your wedding will match the class and elegance that your dress so clearly expresses. The scenic views that surround every corner of the location and big windows that allow you to see it make for a perfect and serene setting. A bride can make her last pre-wedding thoughts looking out into the ocean and so can her guests 36

Charles Krug is Napa Valley’s first winery, named for the 27-year old Prussian immigrant who founded it in 1861. He became the major local winery figure of his era, greatly influencing Napa Valley’s development as a world-renown wine-producing region and building one of the largest winery buildings of its time, the Redwood Cellar, in 1872. In 1881, he followed with the stately Carriage House for his wife, Carolina Bale’s collection of carriages. Both buildings attained Historical Landmark status in 1957. Purchasing the winery in 1943, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi with their sons, Peter and Robert, continued to operate under the Charles Krug name. By the1950’s, they had firmly established themselves in the “Big Five” wineries of Napa Valley. Today, the Peter Mondavi Family continues its dedication to Bordeaux varietals and their historic site. Their extensive restoration earned the 2010 California Historic Preservation Award and continues with the new Hospitality Center due to open in Fall of 2013 in the original Redwood Cellar where the first Tasting Room in California opened in 1882. As one of the rare wineries in Napa Valley permitted to host weddings, the Carriage House and Great Lawn offer acres of park-like lawn wrapped by vineyards and canopied with heritage oaks. Upstairs, the Carriage House Great Room boasts a soaring cathedral ceiling and floor finished in old-growth, wine-soaked redwood. Arched doorways offer views unequaled by any other outdoor space in Napa Valley. Charles Krug Winery also hosts receptions and intimate elopement ceremonies. Contact Patty Grantham, Director of Hospitality, at 888-275-5784 or email pgrantham@cmondavi.com.

Great Weddings knows a little something about

In 1860, Prussian immigrant Charles Krug married Napa Valley local Carolina Bale. With that marriage came a dowry of 142 acres in the wild west in the yet undeveloped Napa Valley.

Together they shared a dream, raised a family, planted vineyards, built a winery and made history. In 1861 they established the Charles Krug Winery in St Helena – the first commercial winery in the Napa Valley. Over 150 years later, their dream lives on under the diligent stewardship of the Peter Mondavi Family. And fittingly, the winery even hosts weddings in our historic Carriage House and expansive Great Lawn. We invite you to have Charles Krug wines at your wedding or better yet, have your wedding at the Charles Krug Winery. We have a history of great weddings.

For information about visiting our winery or hosting your wedding at our beautiful Carriage House and Great Lawn, visit us at www.charleskrug.com

San Francisco

With the winter cold threatening a rapid drop of body temperature at any given moment, some warm, yet undeniably fashionable, clothes are called to the scene. Be awe-struck with some new and edgy looks by the designers we all love from Loehmann’s.

57

A Story of

By Joan Currie

Fashion & Love the making of SF’s new ‘IT’ couple...

Since 1966 the Wilkes Bashford clothing and fashion store, located in the heart of San Francisco, has been known for its classic luxury brands and high-end clientele. In 2009 the Mitchell family, owners of East coast Mitchells, Richards and Marshs stores acquired Wilkes Bashford. Tyler Mitchell moved to California to run the store bringing with him an exciting vision of how to expand it and add many new lines to make the shopping experience not only appeal to the more established customers but to younger ones as well. He did not come to the city by the Bay alone… Stephanie is wearing Azzedine Alaia white dress with Jimmy Choo shoes and Loren Jewels. Tyler is wearing a 3 piece Zegna suit with a custom Hamilton shirt

r YOU CAN KISS THE BRIDE Their First Kiss as a married couple was immortalized in this picture

Joan to Stephanie: How did you and Tyler meet? Stephanie: Tyler and I met at his store in Connecticut. I worked for Mitchells on the jewelry buying team for four years. He asked me out and we actually had a secret relationship for a year and no one had any idea because it was an unspoken rule that owners cannot date the associates. Then Tyler’s family decided to buy Wilkes Bashford and he said to me, “If I move to California would you come with me as I will only move if come, too?” I said, “Yes!” I knew right then and there that I wanted to be with him forever. We moved to California in 2010 and were engaged for a year. We had to plan everything having to do with our wedding because our family was on the East coast. Laurie Arons was our wedding planner. Joan to Tyler: What attracted you to Stephanie? Tyler:You just have to have a pulse to have a reaction to Stephanie – she’s gorgeous! For as beautiful as she is, she is very soft-spoken and sweet. It is that combination of her beauty with that soft-spoken sweetness that attracted me. Joan to Stephanie: What attracted you to Tyler? Stephanie:Tyler has an unbelievable sense of humor and is also very cool. It is funny to say this but he is his own person and the way he is – he is like that towards everybody - just a cool, fun to be with guy. He’s also tall and handsome - I think he is absolutely gorgeous.

Joan to Tyler: How did you propose to Stephanie? Tyler: We had a very impromptu proposal in Positano. The master plan was Paris because Stephanie had never been there. But we were in Naples for work. It was a cold time of year and we didn’t know Capri was closed, so we drove to Positano and checked into the only hotel that was open. Naples is a very dangerous city and we were told not to wear watches or carry a purse and here I was with this big engagement ring. I thought that I shouldn’t leave it in the safe so I had it triple wrapped in my cargo pants and we went down to the beach for lunch. It was just the two of us at the one café that was open and we got some pasta and a bottle of wine and then got a second bottle of wine.

72

Suddenly the sun came out and I thought to myself, “I wish I could propose right here because this is so perfect” AndthenIthought,“Waitaminute!Ihavetheringonme–Icandothis!” I got down on my knees and proposed. It was incredible and so natural because I wasn’t freaking out about it. Literally two seconds before I proposed I wasn’t even thinking about

proposing, so I was completely calm and it felt so right. I tell guys who are thinking about getting engaged to carry the ring around and wait for that perfect moment. I think so many proposals are staged or scripted and for me it was so natural! Joan to Stephanie What makes your relationship work well? Stephanie: We are very good friends and look forward to spending a lot of time together and just love being with each other. When you really love someone anything works. We text all the time and he calls me to meet him for lunch. We are very, very close! Joan to Tyler: How would you describe your ideal date? Tyler: The perfect date for me would be home on the couch with a movie and a bottle of wine. We are very blessed to travel a ton for work and have unlimited entertainment in this city with customers, friends, and designers - we are out every single night. We are very social and it seems like the rare thing for us is to stay home. Joan to Stephanie: Where is your favorite romantic place to visit? Stephanie: We love Capri, Italy. We stay at the JK Place – probably our favorite hotel in the world. It’s really awesome.

Joan to Stephanie: If the ability to problem solve is a predictor for a lasting relationship, how do you and Tyler do that? Stephanie: We are working on that right now because we just bought a place and are designing it. The key to success for both parties is to be happy, listen to one another, put yourself in the other person’s shoes, and also be real. Be yourself. Joan to Stephanie: How do you and Tyler celebrate special occasions? Stephanie: For birthdays,Tyler will sweep me off my feet and bring me to Italy, Napa, or to a great dinner with friends. For my 25th birthday, he had a big group of our friends meet at the restaurant Boulette’s Larder in the Ferry Building. It was a big surprise party - Tyler is very good at surprises! Joan to Stephanie: What would be a great gift that you would like to receive? Stephanie: Going home and spending time with family. We both have big families and we all get along. He is close to my parents and I am close to his parents, so we both lucked out!

Wishing the best to San Francisco’s youngest IT couple. We will see you around!

Chris & Kelly - The Engagement Party

Bayfashion’s very own Chris Rojas and Kelly Jackson threw a party to celebrate their engagement and we were there to join the fun! A winter engagement party in Malibu reaps the same benefits as a summer engagement party anywhere else in the World. Especially when you host it at the Sunset Restaurant, right on the beach. Sunshine, champagne, oysters, beach photo shoots and an all white theme (with black and neon green accents) radiantly shined on this winter day in November at the Sunset Restaurant. The impeccably planned event was produced by Green Carpet Event Company (www. greencarpetevent.com)

Malibu is the all season location to get engaged on the Beach!

The beach theme was important to the bride who was raised in the area and it was carried out through the private room with Beachwood, starfish, and accents on all tables by the event planner. Champagne and oysters were the couples favorite, so the Sunset Restaurant provided these delicacies in the private upstairs party room along with delicious hor’d’erves like Chicken satay and veggies for the afternoon soiree. Fun facts about the couple were highlighted on white and neon green napkins (Eg. Kelly was voted Miss Wildest and Chris was voted Mr. Party Hardiest in their senior year high school polls), next to the white and neon green cake provided by Creative Culinary Group. (www.creativeculinarygroup.com) Dana Morgan, the proprietor of Green Carpet, listened to the brides dream of getting married in Thailand on the beach with the Balloons raising in the air (seen the Hangover part Two anyone??) and her love of fireworks. Noting the bride and groom’s budgetary constraints (Fireworks alone start at $10,000 just for permits) she made the miracle occur meeting both of those visions, all while in budget. White large balloons were provided to every guest to make a wish and let go of on the beach. The joy of watching them on the beach rise up after the toast was noted from all guests at the party as well as in the restaurant. Sparklers were given as party favor (with a witty note that said “Sparks fly with Chris and Kelly”) and everyone surrounded the bride and groom with lighting their way as they exited the party during the Sunset. A festive, romantic and beach day was had by all-even in November.

BAYFashion/Fashion of Food Fall in love at Farina...

by Kelly Jackson

A Romantic Rooftoop Restaurant Romantic rooftops are not a common find in San Francisco. Romantic Italian restaurants are rather common, but they typically do not come with authentic food that people travel from all over US to eat (since one cannot always buy a ticket to Italia). What if your lover threw you off by taking you to a restaurant in the Mission (“You are not in North Beach anymore Toto, said Dorothy) that served authentic Italian food in a lowly lit chic restaurant and then asked you to take a walk up to the roof. Seated alone in the open air, you are not at the crowded touristy Coit Tower, you are drinking expensive Italian wine and surrounded by clean lines and modern romance. You would never expect to find a vibe like this in San Francisco. Santa Monica, maybe. San Francisco, no.This is a place where men are not afraid to wear pink because they are comfortable in their masculinity knowing they just whisked you off your feet. First date, anniversary or proposal location (on the roof) Farina offers all of this -plus a delectable menu to boot. Chef Angelo Auriana has cooked for many famous Farina visitors like Woody Allen and Randy Jackson, and also at private parties for the really rich and famous like the Rolling Stones. So wining and dining a loved one here is sure to please.

Farina is located at: 3560, 18th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110 Phone:(415) 565-0360 Prices: $59 (average per person) Hours: 5:00 pm–10:00 pm Daily http://www.farina-foods.com

The chef Angelo Auriana himself purchases the freshest ingredients from local farmers. Basil is brought in from the farmers in the morning and is transformed into smooth creamy pesto with very little garlic (keeps the romance going) and served over the signature pasta dish mandilli de seta or silk hankerchief pasta. The goal is to serve fresh simple meals using fresh simple ingredients. They also do this with their cocktails. The basil martini was the best I had ever had and that is my favorite martini drink that I chose to drink at any place that offers them. Ironically enough, I do not typically like pesto and I loved theirs. While I was there, a truffle dealer came in with a small basket of truffles. You could smell them from the front door. Apparently that basket cost more than my diamond earrings. At Farina they give you more truffle oil per plate than any other restaurant in San Francisco because they focus on the best ingredients , not pricepoints. I was told they add fresh California wine and rosemary to their bread (which you can watch them make every day). Second to their pesto, they are well known for their Prosciutto Burrata Foccacina. Even if you are not having a good date that night, you can still fall in love, with their Prosciutto Burrata Foccacina. However if your night is going very well, keep in mind that they host rehearsal dinners and weddings there.

‘I Do’

but what do we “I Do” to?

‘Marriage’

by Jason Martineau

it is one of those words that everyone understands, yet has a different idea about. Historically, it has represented the strategic alliance of families and their wealth or power, or the exchange of a dowry, political opportunities, or land. Later, it gave young people the reason they needed to leave their childhood homes and become responsible adults, their first taste of freedom, ironically coupled with an even larger commitment. In the US, it has assumed many shades of obligation: social, religious, or moral. Long considered the bedrock of societal structure, to marry and have a family has been championed as the ultimate goal of a life. Our tax and health care systems reward married couples over unmarried couples or single people, giving them significant financial breaks and advantages. In recent times, arguments in the public sphere have raged on about whether marriage can be defined by its gender makeup alone (“…between a man and a woman…”), or if it is a permissible institution for same-sex couples to enjoy equally. As of this time, 10 states recognize same-sex marriage, including of course California (albeit conditionally). Advocates of “traditional” marriage quote the Bible, speak of “family values”, and liberals and progressives cite the constitutional right to love and share the same privileges as opposite-sex couples without discrimination.

On average, over 2 million weddings occur in the US per year. Suffice to say, this 40-billion dollar (annual) industry holds a tremendous place in the minds and hearts of people. The number of weddings in the US has actually decreased over the last 10 years, from 2.3 million in 2000 to 2 million in 2010, and continues to slowly drop, despite the growth in population. The rate of divorces seems to be holding steady between 872,000 and 944,000 during that same time period (these statistics come from legal registrations tracked by the CDC and the National Center for Health Services). By most estimates, 45% of these happy and hopeful endeavors eventually end. While the most commonly used vows spoken at a wedding ceremony include “…as long as you both shall live…” or “…until death do us part…”, clearly life does not always unfold as planned. Why is this perennially celebrated union decreasing in numbers, and showing such a staggering probability of failure, no more reliable than a flip of a coin?

“Is Marriage obsolete in todays Society? Does every relationship have an expiry date?”

Many reasons have been cited by sociologists and psychologists, ranging from a seeming increase in individualism and narcissism, a supposed loss of regard and respect for family, to shifting approaches in cohabitation, and a belief that marriage itself may be obsolete or outdated. At one time, a couple did not live together until they wed. Today it is quite common for a couple to have a trial period, to “see how it goes.” Long-term relationships have been replaced with “hook-ups”, or are labeled as “hanging out.” Polyamory and open relationships seem to have increased to some extent, or are perhaps simply more visible and accepted than in past generations. By such trends, it might appear as though the idea of marriage is losing favor, and being replaced by forms of serial monogamy, or temporary partnerships. Still, with just under 40% of adults being married, and the number slowly dropping each year, as well as the trend of people marrying for the first time later in life (and living longer), many questions arise about these trends, and their potential social implications. As for a woman’s taking of a man’s surname, this trend has also decreased. There are evolutionary aspects to this practice, as it is not necessarily the exercise of patriarchal dominance it has been accused of being. The Y chromosome, the one responsible for articulating the male gender (XX=female, XY=male) changes very little as it is passed from father to son, and so acts as an historical record, facilitating genealogical research, and tracking such things as migration patterns and relatedness among groups of people.

n the age of pre-nuptial agreements, celebrity wedding and breakup spectacles, and a host of unrealistic expectations fed by romance novels and movies, what meaning does the phrase “I do” have today? Does it still represent that unshakable ground and commitment which bespeaks of two people’s intentions to share their lives? What about the importance of children being born within a marriage, which insures questions of inheritance, support, and legal custody? A marriage is a form of contract. As with any contract, it is largely dependent upon what two people wish to agree upon together. As human beings are malleable, mutable creatures, what we desire and intend at one time in our lives may change and evolve. The question then becomes, are the two willing to change and grow together? As a marriage ceremony always will include witnesses, particularly when they are family or close friends, these witnesses act as an ongoing support for the union, to reinforce its bond over time. A typical wedding in India, for example, may last 3 or 4 days, which presumably has a very strong and lasting effect on the newlyweds, as well as its being considered a marriage of the families and not just the two individuals. Of course the insuring of resources during a child’s formative years, as well as the two parents being present during this time, is also supported by marriage, even if it not be required.

“Only 40% of adults are getting married in the US”

Whether or not an erosion of marriage is occurring, or just appears to be superficially diminishing, the nature of such long-term commitments, when two people will choose to love each other into the future, involves an expansion of awareness. No longer can they think only of themselves. The expression of love on this level is a call to take equal care of ourselves, our beloved, and the shared space created together. If a piece of paper and a legal status helps remind us of this fact, then it is a good thing. As with many ideas about love in the modern era, what matters most is what each wishes in their heart, and the common ground they can find together..

The kings of dark electronica are back with the 1st taste of their upcoming album with this yet untitled track, which is a synth driving, classic DM groove with that unmistakable Dave Gahan growl that opens up into a beautiful 60’s vibe chorus. Anything Depeche Mode touches is a masterpiece and I love it. Can’t wait for the new album!

2

Imagine Dragons “Radioactive”

This song, from this Vegas breakout band, dropped months ago, but I had to give it a look, as it’s an awesome track with deep lyrics to match and it’s heating up the charts. It’s a fresh fusion of alt-rock, with a driving dubstep beat and a catchy melody that sticks, with a crazy cool video you just have to see.

4

“Castle Of Glass” – Music Video

Who doesn’t love Linkin Park and what I love the most, is they never disappoint, dropping big catchy hooks and awesome lyrics and this track is no exception. The video shows the heartbreak of war and is featured on the upcoming EA game, Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

5 Bruno Mars “Gorilla”

This new single, from the multi-talented new pop-stars sophomore album, “Unorthodox Jukebox”, is a beast – literally! It’s a mashup of musical styles as he sings about getting drunk, with a cocaine kicker, then making love like Gorillaz-damn! It’s a big song on a massive new album, loaded with hits that should blast him further into iconic superstardom!

6

“Wait” – Music Video

The French electronic music band’s trilogy collaboration with Fleur and Manu is now complete with this final video. The trilogy started with “Midnight City” and “Reunion”, all from the breakout album “Hurry up, we’re dreaming”. It’s a gorgeous video of art, childhood surrealism & Sci-fi imagery.

DIRTY VEGAS

I recently had the opportunity to catch up with Grammy award winning British EDM act Dirty Vegas, who’s 90’s dance hit, “Days Go By”, took them to club superstardom. I spoke to band member Paul Harris about their success and the future of EDM in the U.S… SBP: You guys have had quite a run since your Grammy award winning hit, “Days Go By”, do you think you can top the success of that awesome record? DV: Who know’s, I guess were always trying to make records as good as possible, personally I thought that our last album (Electric Love) was the best thing we had ever released, but i guess people will always think of ‘Days go By’, as it really did connect. SBP: You’ve been DJing too, how is that different from your live shows? DV: DJ show’s are DJ shows! Live show’s are a Band. But we do try to add extra elements with the DJ show’s, using iPad’s and also having the added element of Live vocal’s from time to time. SBP: Who produces all of the Dirty Vegas music? Do you play all your own instruments? DV: Dirty Vegas is the three of us as a core, Steve (Vocals, Guitars, Percussion) , Ben (Keys, Guitars) , Paul Harris (Keys), but all three of us produce together. Our last record we also had a good friend Julian Peake write some of the record with us, and because we were travelling a lot we had another good friend and great producer Simon Duffy help with the final stages of putting the record together. I guess when your travelling so much, it’s really hard to get things finished, so the help really helps!

SBP: What do you think about the current explosion of EDM into Pop Culture in the U.S? DV: It’s been a long time coming, its taken over 20 years for America to really embrace what they started years ago, I personally think its a great thing and it seem’s like its certainly getting bigger. I do feel now though that everyone have jumped on the bandwagon a bit too much , and it’s starting to have a bit of overkill , but the flip side of that is the underground of Dance music has never been better ,You need both side’s of it to make the scene healthy. SBP: There are so many EDM acts everywhere now, headlining big festivals, TV shows and commanding 6 and 7 figures per show. Do you feel like you were ahead of the curve? DV: Ha, I wouldn’t say that, because 10 year’s ago, we thought we were doing quite well! The scene has changed so much since, I’m happy I’ve seen this whole evolution happen, and happy to have maybe been part of it. But yes, I must admit financially now, there’s certainly zero’s added to fee’s that we didn’t see all that time ago! But then 10 years ago you never had DJ’s that could fill a stadium on there own Solo shows either. SBP: Who inspires you in music today? DV: I’m personally inspired by producer’s, as I’ve become more involved in that area. I really like what people like Benny Blanco, Dr Luke, Max Martin and Shellback are doing, taking everything that’s great about dance, electronic, pop, rock, hip-hop, R’n’B and making great songs. If we were talking about DJ’s, I still love what they are doing at DC10 in Ibiza, with Jamie Jones, Davide Squaillance, they play music to me that sounds very similar to what I liked when I first got into house music in 89/90. SBP: Do you think EDM is here to stay or has it peaked? DV: It’s very much here to stay in one form or another, it will change shape and morph into other sub-genre’s but EDM is here to stay. SBP: Whats next for Dirty Vegas? DV: Same as it has always been, more music, more gig’s, more shows, more travelling. As I said at the start, really can’t complain. Check out more on Dirty Vegas at www.dirtyvegas.com

Perfect Beauty Advice For Pre-Wedding!

by Aliya Qazi

Wedding is one of the most important events in your life. This is the day when you desire to look and feel your best. Setting up your health and beauty routine comes before the rest of your wedding planning.

Must - Do Routine * Eat a healthy and balanced diet. As a makeup

artist I have been working with the brides for quite some time and one common mistake most of the brides make is to observe crazy diet plans. By doing so you not only shed pounds but also lose skin radiance and freshness. Eat vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Avoid spicy and oily foods. Quit anything that comes within the junk food category. Drink plenty of water.

* Workout regularly, four to five times a week for 45 minutes.Your exercise should combine both cardio as well as muscle training. Stick to this routine and see the results. * Pamper yourself by indulging in a skin care regimen.

Keep it easy and simple so that you can follow it everyday. Cleanse your skin thoroughly; never go to bed with makeup on. Gently exfoliate to remove dead cells.

* Protect your skin. Hydrate with any moisturizer based on your skin type. Wear sunblock to protect against sun damage. This routine is not only for your face but also neck, hands and feet. Do not get any last minute skin or hair treatments in order to avoid any allergic reaction. * Keep your hair and scalp clean and conditioned. Use sulfate free shampoo followed by a moisture

replenishing conditioner. Protect your hair from the sun by using products as well as wearing a hat. Avoid too much heat styling.

* No short hair. Do not cut your hair too short because most of the bridal hairstyles require medium to long hair.

Best of luck

This time is very precious, stay relaxed and enjoy every moment. Model: Mia Maguire Makeup: Melina Ruiz Hair: Char Sanchez Veil: Andre Soriano Lingerie: Fredericks Bracelet : BCBG Fashion Photographer: Gail Bowman

BAYFashion/Young Achiever Interview

By Lesya Pishchevskaya

‘Engajing’ Michael

http://www.engajer.com

Production & Video:Yefim Remarenko Hair: Natasia Dimulias | Makeup: Maria Dimulias

Video is often acclaimed for being the best form of media. Michael Castellano, the CEO of engajer, not only agrees, but also has built his company around the new video format that he calls ‘interactive video.’ BAYFashion Tech Correspondent Lesya Pishchevskaya interviewed Mr. Castellano to inquire about engajer, the new format of video that this company has introduced, and – of course – about Michael’s taste in fashion! Lesya: How did you come up with the idea of engajer? Michael: engajer is one of those products that came from solving a customer’s problem. When I ran my previous media company, I met with a customer who didn’t have enough time and resources for a sales team, nor he had time to sell the program himself. During our meeting, the client crumbled up the brochure of his program, threw it on his desk and said,“Darn it! I just need to clone myself!” I realized that he wanted to take and clone what he knew about the program, the conversation about it, and the way he would answer questions about it. He wanted to send that to everybody who was a potential customer, and that’s what you can accomplish with engajer – you can clone your best sales person during their best day. Lesya: How is engajer different from Youtube and other video products on the market? Michael:There is an inherent limitation to linear video. Linear video is almost every video you’ve seen so far -YouTube video, videos on websites… Linear video plays from start to stop. The inherent limitation is that either you have to make a very long video to cover all the points that you want to make for all the audiences that you want to reach (this gets boring!), or you need to keep the video very short, so it’s pithy and it’s fun, but you don’t get to educate your customer very well. With the interactive video we chop all the content up into short 30-second video modules, and put them into a hierarchical decision tree. Do you remember the old “Chose your own Adventure” storybooks, where you could pick the adventure you wanted? That’s how engajer works; that’s how the interactive video works. The recipient of an engajer selects what they want to talk about. Lesya: Once I’ve received and interacted with an engajer, I want to talk to the company’s sales person. Can I do that? Michael: That’s the end goal. You want to send your virtual sales person out to as many people as possible, and then after people have interacted with it, you can see detailed analytics through our platform. We’ve built a proprietary analytics system that tracks every single engajer sent to every single person. The system shows data about who has looked at the engajer, how long they spent, which modules they went down – we call that the “core door of interest,” - and other. The analytics platform will tell the sales person if the recipient of an engajer has shared it with either their boss or someone else. Our proprietary algorithms will rank all of the recipients based on the depth of engagement. This way, sales people get to follow up with people who are educated, interested, and are ready to buy. Lesya: Can I optimize the engajer based on the episode that got the most interest? Michael:You can start using the analytics to see which episodes are the most popular for your engajer and where you get the most drop off. For example, if you see that people drop off during the episode about pricing, you may want to rethink that episode, but because it’s “chose your own adventure,” engajer always gives information that’s relevant to the user. Engajer is always a personalized, customized experience.

98

Watch the video of this interview by Clicking Here or scanning the QR Code Lesya: It sounds like video is the most interactive media format out there. Do you think there will be another format that’s even more interactive? Maybe You will bring it to the masses! Michael: I believe that video is the best form of media. I think that interactive video is better. Where do we go after interactive video? Maybe we’ll see interactive holograms! Maybe one day when I send you an engajer, a holographic you pops up on your iPad. Lesya: Is your engajer selling now? Michael: We obviously have an engajer about the engajer. We call him Virtual Michael. While I am sitting here and talking to you,Virtual Michael is having interactive conversation with multiple people all around the world. Our platform is conveniently integrated with Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. In the end of every single video module, we’ll pose a question. For example, Virtual Michael would ask, “What would you like to explore first?” The respondent can say, “Tell me about the benefits of engajer.” And then, I – the Virtual Michael - am in a conversation with them. Lesya: Do you foresee that 5 years from now everyone has 3 sales people and a million engajers ? Michael: 5 Year vision… I would say that there is a whole massive industry that’s coming. The same way that the personal computer industry has emerged, the same way as the social network as a massive movement came, there is another movement that’s just 2-5 years out. This movement is ‘virtual,’ when people finally start to clone their personas, start to virtualize themselves. That’s everybody: sales people, people running for a government office, artists.. Lesya: That sounds very efficient. Should we talk about Fashion with Virtual Michael or the real Michael. I know you are from the East Coast. What do you think are the differences in how people dress on the East Coast and the West Coast? Michael: Real Michael (smile). There is a big difference there. When I first came to Silicon Valley, I quickly got schooled on the differences. I went to a networking event wearing a suit. A fellow entrepreneur – investor told me “I have to tell you, you are automatically limited to how many billions you can make by wearing that suit.” I said, “What are you talking about?” He said, “Look, if you want to make millions, you need to buy yourself a pair of jeans.” That’s what I did and converted very quickly. On the East Coast, it was always khaki pants, a blazer, an oxford shirt, and a tie. That doesn’t work quite well here. Lesya: What works here? Michael: Here in startups I think you have to dress appropriately for what you are doing. If you are a founder, I think you should always be wearing your company’s shirt. It’s free marketing and free advertising. A pair of jeans, a company shirt, and a blazer – I think that’s appropriate. For example, anytime I am doing something public, I dress the same I dress in the engajer about engajer. I do that for a very specific reason – I want people to understand that they are talking to me, and my virtual self, which is my clone. Lesya: What fashion advice would you give to founders, engineers, and sales people? Michael: Founders, use fashion to help your startup. Entrepreneurs need to be very resourceful, and everything they do needs to be promoting their company or helping them get to the next level. If you are an engineer and you are in the office working until 2 a.m., I don’t think it matters what you wear. However, if you are a sales person and you participate in meetings, you need to dress sharp.
