Welcome to the 22nd edition of BAYFashion Magazine. Whew! What a journey it has been. Truth to be told, when I started BAYFashion back in 2010, I did not have the slightest idea that I would be able to inspire so many like minded people to join in our cause... Every name that you see on the left side of this page belongs to someone who loves fashion, loves San Francisco and wants to make sure that this great city of ours can take its rightful place among the ‘fashionable cities’ of the World. Some of us have invested heavily with cash, some of us have invested with time and passion. But one thing is common in this list... everyone of them is dedicated to one dream. Building a serious fashion publication in San Francisco, a publication that can compare with the best in the World in terms of quality, a publication that will put our city on the fashion map of the World! I am so proud to be part of such a group of passionate individuals, I would like to kindly ask you all to applaud them, cause no one deserves it more. As usual, this issue of BAYFashion sets new standards and crosses new boundaries. We now are the first and only magazine in San Francisco to boast of having Jean Paul Gaultier, Guerlain and Givenchy as partners in business and of course now you can buy a copy in over 200 locations in the Bay.

Shankha Enjoy the issue.

My Name is Baker

BAYFashion/Mens Fashion Story

Photography by Greg Alexander (www.gregalexander.net) Art director Sébastien Vienne (www.sebastienvienne.com) Hair & Make-up François Laly Article: Emmanuelle Colpin Special thanks to Jean Charles Genest of Harley Davidson Paris Etoile

“I do not need anyone on my Harley Davidson” Bastian Baker could sing. From all of his 21 years of age, this young artist sets out to conquer the United States. He recently visited New York as part of the 32nd CMJ Music Marathon, the largest professional event dedicated to the discovery of new talents, and also a prerequisite to get to be known by the public. He therefore performed in the Living Room, an alternative music club. History has it that Norah Jones was discovered there too. It undoubtedly augured well! But for Bastian, It was overall a great honor to play in such a prestigious place. But he has kept his feet firmly on the ground: “It’s definitely the beginning of the musical conquest of the United States, and I don’t expect anything. But I assume that you have to play wherever you can play as often as possible. First, because it is a great pleasure but also because you never know what may happen ... there may be a guy there who appreciates my music and offers me another concert in the United States.” So, he performed a 45 minute show, with his guitar in his hand, his angel face, and butterflies in his stomach. Bastian enjoyed the moment anyway while playing a succession of folk ballads such as Colorful Hospital, or Give me your heart.... “When I was on stage, I had a brief clear-headed moment, I naturally smiled, and I thought: “Woo, guy! It’s pretty cool what you’re doing! “ And if you feel like you could compare him to Justin Bieber, you couldn’t be wronger. They don’t belong to the same category. Of course, he has the body of an Adonis and deep green eyes where more than one would like to be drowned ... but Bastian Baker is everything but the result of a major company’s last whim. He is a self-made-man; an author and a composer as well as a singer. His story started in Lausanne, Switzerland, close to Lake Geneva where he was born in 1991. His father is a former Swiss hockey player and his mother is a teacher. As a child, he was already interested in music, played the guitar and sang in Villeneuve school chorale. First destined for a “just like daddy” hockey player career, he simultaneously pursued his studies in French and History at the university to become a sports journalist, but he soon did a U-turn and made his way to music. Rumour has it that he was discovered by one of his friends’ father while performing at a birthday party. Convinced of his talent, he offered to become his producer and a financial support. Here’s how the machine was launched. His first single ‘Lucky’ was released in March 2011. A month later, he played live at the Caprices Festival in Crans-Montanal. All the 3000 available seats were besieged. Everything went on then: Claude Nobs, the founder and director of the Montreux Jazz Festival, invited him and once again, it was a huge success. His debut on stage was followed by the release of the track “Lucky.” It became a hit that ranked first in the charts and was endlessly repeated on every Swiss radio station. His album ‘May Be Better Tomorrow’ followed and was a success too. In March 2012, he was rewarded with a Swiss Music Awards, the equivalent of the American Grammy awards, in the “Best Breaking” category. It was a revelation.

Barely a year passed and France heard about this young pop-folk artist. He was the guest of honour in the famous French music TV show, Taratata. After this, he went for a show at le Reservoir in Paris: the place was crowded, Bastian had a ball and tested new songs. According to Gilbert Coulier, a great French producer, «Bastian has everything to succeed; he has the voice and the look.”

CHRISTIAN DIOR PARIS: Total Look

And that’s true for this good-looking fellow also has an incredible voice. You just need to listen to his cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ with his guitar and chills are guaranteed. Switzerland idolized him first, but France succumbed to his charm too. He took part in a successful TV show in France, “Dancing with the Stars”, a dancing contest with celebrities. Bastian Baker’s first appearance on the show with the dancer Katrina Patche triggered a tsunami on his Twitter and gathered 3000 followers in less than two hours on his account. Some compare him to a mix between Elvis Presley and James Dean and like wildfire, he was credited with a love affair with his partner, Katrina Patche, and then, with the French singer, Lorie ... But no, nothing like that! Bastian Baker is clear about it: “No scoop on that point, I’m still single! » Switzerland, France…, His cover of “Hallelujah” should indubitably seduce the American public. The Bastian Baker phenomenon is on the way.

Sonya Molodetskaya is a San Francisco Fashion Icon, Socialite and a Lady with a Mission! Sonya effortlessly floats amongst the highest of San Francisco circles, but does not miss a beat while taking up a cause for immigrants or deciding to become a foot soldier in projects aimed at enriching the life of the not-so-fortunate souls of the city. BAYFashion followed Sonya around for a weekend to document and showcase the ‘Fashionista’ side of her personality and get a taste of how fashionable a typical ‘ fashionista weekend’ looks like in the world of the rich and famous.

In Conversation with Jill Siefert Jill: What inspires your style? I’m sure everyone wants to know, as you are always a surprise! Sonya: Fashion defines my day! Two top people that give me style inspiration are: Giovanna Battaglia and Willie Brown!

“Lululemon is not a dinner outfit, or even to be considered an outfit to wear to lunch…. I won’t be caught dead wearing gym clothes outside of the gym, even if it’s their top seller. There is a place and time to wear everything... Gym clothes are for the gym.”

Sonya

Jill: I love that! What does it mean to you to express yourself through fashion? Sonya: To experiment! To wear color! I love color-blocking Too! Thank god now, it’s finally in fashion! Ha ha.. My favorite colors are yellow and orange. And hardly ever black except for formal. Even then I tend to wear something outstanding in silhouette or color. Jill: That is great, tell me now about your role at Bay Fashion Magazine… and how do you have time for all of this? Sonya: I believe in the San Francisco fashion community and I am the VP of Public Relations. I hope to shed light on all the amazing talents here in San Francisco. Connect designers with the right people and see them grow. There really is so much fashion to discover in San Francisco. I want San Francisco to be recognized as a fashion city! I think fashion is so important. If I had my last $ in my pocket, I would use it to buy a new pair of shoes! And I don’t think there is anything wrong with that – loving fashion and supporting it! And because I f…kin can! Ha ha ha Jill: Love it Sonya, and that is why we need you in San Francisco. This is why I call you a style savant! Jill: What inspired this fashion quest? Sonya: My favorite writer, Danielle Steele once said that there was no fashion in San Francisco. I love her but I want to prove her wrong. There is a unique sense of style and fashion here in San Francisco. Jill: What is most important to you in life? Sonya: Family! I consider myself lucky because I have great family who never judges me, it is important to have people whom you can count on especially being an immigrant.

Special thanks to the ex San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown for letting us shoot in his penthouse and helping with locations.

READY FOR THE NIGHT OUT WITH HER soulmate, THE CITY awaits HER NEXT fashion STATEMENT

Jill: Whom do you go to for advice? | Sonya: Willie Brown, he is very wise and incredibly patient. And I am probably the most inpatient person in the world. Little crazy too, haha… As strange as it sounds he puts up with a lot while dating me. Jill: Ok, let’s talk about your work and what you have done and where you are today. | Sonya: Well, I had my own store ‘Podium’ in the Marina, and I learned a lot there. Being an entrepreneur is not easy, nothing comes easy without hard work, discipline and for me I had to prove to myself that I could do this! Jill: I loved that store, always something to find and discover. | Sonya:Yes, well I miss it but now I’m involved with the City more, in the role of Immigrant Rights Commissioner and being the member of “ Not for Sale” Campaign, which is against human trafficking and a subject close to my heart. I also worked on the Haiti Relief effort here in San Francisco. Jill: How did you get involved with this role? | Sonya: One night at a casual dinner with Mayor Gavin Newsom years ago, we got onto the topic of human trafficking. The position of Immigrant Rights Commissioner opened up, I applied and Gavin Newsom appointed me. It is one of the largest honors I’ve ever received. And now I’ve been appointed for a second term!

Jill: So here we are in your new home, tell me about it and what are your favorite things in it? Sonya: My favorite things in my new home are my fabulous downstairs room that is my closet, former Mayor Willie Brown’s official chair he used at City Hall while being the Mayor, I cherish that and the latest painting of an artist I hired to paint a self portrait of me. I start my day by walking into this closet and put an outfit together that will define my day- Literally, a bad outfit can RUIN my day, that is when I’m seen at Neiman Marcus shopping to find a new outfit! The sales associates love it! Jill: WOW! This closet is every woman’s dream; I would want to sleep in here! I love being surrounded by fur, Hermes, Chanel and Christian Louboutins. Sonya: Yes, many people that come over don’t ever want to leave. We call it a chic bear cave. Jill: I can see why no one would want to leave, besides the fashion closet; I love all of your surreal artwork, the love of Fornasetti, the baby grand piano instead of a kitchen table and the combination of textiles and surfaces. It’s so cozy and chic. I feel like I’m in the fashion closet at Vogue. Let’s see, what is your favorite fashion item right now from here? Sonya: My Nicholas Kirkwood Booties, they should be in the photo-shoot above. I just love the combination of art and fashion. So many people literally stop me when I wear these shoes. I think because they are chic, yet fun, artistic and self-expressing. Jill: That is what I love about your style Sonya, you are not afraid to wear color, or new silhouettes. You do it in a way that is flattering and sophisticated. Sonya: Well, that is my style mantra: “ Don’t be afraid to express yourself.” I think so many people are afraid to express themselves. This is something that is instilled in me since I was a child of the Soviet Union; we were always suppressed and not allowed to stand out. It was my dream to come here to the US and be ME! In the Soviet Union, we had no possibilities but in the US you can be anything you want. Jill: Yes, I loved the most recent dress your wore to the SF Opera opening. That dress made you look like a princess- all white and so fun yet elegant! I know you were named one of the five Best Dressed women of San Francisco by Red Carpet SF 2011, and The Best Dressed Woman of San Francisco 2012 by Nob Hill Gazette. You also took most of the votes on Facebook for your Symphony Opening dress this year. Who was the designer? Sonya: A local designer from Sausalito, Vasily Vein. He is from Russia and I fell in love with his designs. He made my Opera and Symphony dresses this year. They are so glamorous and fun to wear! Jill:There are so many up and coming young artists that are great you support them! Jill: So we want to know, where are your favorite places to shop in San Francisco? Sonya: Well, Neiman Marcus is the “institute of fashion” in my opinion; I love their selection of designers- from high-end to contemporary. I also love, Wilkes Bashford, they have hidden gems and is the place to find the most fabulous cocktail dress and a new pair of shoes!

“High Fashion is expensive, but taste cannot be bought. Sonya’s closet is a testament to her taste and eye for fashion. We will be featuring her closet in many future issues of BAYFashion, stay tuned...” TAM NGUYEN (Fashion Editor, BAYFashion) 22

BAYFashion/College Fashion Update

Holiday 2012

by Kelsie Gray

COLLEGE FASHION

Model: Olya Rostov Fashion Stylist: Kelsie Gray Photos: Kevin Sam & Johanna Aquino

for Winter 2012 with

Take revenge on the San Francisco fog with these winter looks for 2012. Enjoy casual, edgy, sophisticated, and sexy looks that even as a college student you can afford this holiday season. Thanks to Forever 21 offering up their stylish pieces to BAYFashion, we have created looks that people on the streets will be dying to have. Get out of the habit of classic college sweatshirts and blue jeans and rock these looks we have put together for YOU.

63

COZY-CASU FASHION

How to update that casual sweater and coat hanging in your closet to a sexy and fashionable outfit!

Being casual doesn’t mean boring, show the world you know how to work it with this outfit by Forever21

By flashing the edgy print underneath a sweater and winter coat you transform your style to that of a true fashion icon. step outside your comfort zone and always add something bold to an outfit that otherwise would be so plain.

By adding a short and flirty skirt to the outfit you add sex appeal to a usually concealing look. Whoever said you can’t be sexy in the winter season obviously hasn’t seen this outfit. Pair the skirt with some platform boots and get stares from miles away

Never underestimate the power accessories and prints can add to an outfit. Not only will they amp up your overall look but it will say a little bit about you as a person as well. Experiment with the basics; the color of the sweater, the design of the shirt underneath, and even the color and shapes of the jewelry!! Make your look say, “I am comfortable and fashionable,” instead of “I am cold and don’t really care.” Each piece adds something to your look and when shopping at such an affordable place like Forever 21, you dont have to feel bad about all the pieces that go into it. Layering your clothes is the key to developing a perfect style so dont be afraid of a crazy print or big chunky jewelry because it is most likely just what you need to step up your game in the fashion world.

64

Holiday 2012

EDGY AND FIERCE FASHION

Rock that fur vest gathering dust in your closet today by amping it up with some bright skinny jeans and acessories!! Take a step on the wild side with Forever 21’s fur vest this winter season. By adding a cool necklace, belt and beanie, your look can easily be transformed to something edgy and photo worthy without much effort.

To refrain from looking too dark and unappoachable, wear a pair of bright skinny jeans to add some contrast to the look. And if you wanna be really put together, match your beanie to the color of the jeans you chose like we did here.

START THE FIRE

This outft proves that stepping outside the boundaries of the usual college fashion style can be well worth the risk. As you can see this look is fabulous and there are only three pieces of clothing to it and some acessories. It doesn’t take a lot to make a look speak volumes. Give it a voice with a little bit of effort. Trust me.... it is well worth it!

65

CLASSY AND SASSY FASHION Bring out your inner girly girl with this bright and flirty outfit! Whoever said light colors and pastels can’t be worn in winter clearly haven’t seen this outfit.

Wear a contrasting sweater over the look like the one in mint green we have here and also a neutral mini skirt that will pull together the whole look and add that cuteness everyone is looking for.

Never be afraid of mixing prints or textures. The light pink lace pairs perfectly with the pink and black polkadot shirt in this outfit. The lace adds a little sexiness to the look and takes you from simpleschool girl to a put together fashionista.

Forever 21 is THE perfect place to shop when you are in college. You can’t go wrong when it comes to their prices and when you see what amazing looks you can create with each piece they sell, how can you say no?? Get this look today and reign in the compliments. But don’t forget to thank Forever 21 for making each piece possible and affordable while your at it.

66

“When The Lights Go Down In The City Put your little black dress on!!!

Holiday 2012

Little black dress approved?? I think YES!!! The sexy cut and jeweled detail makes this the perfect dress for a night out on the town. Whether it be a night out with friends or a holiday event this dress will put you right where you want to be... in the SPOTLIGHT. Because of the already added jewels you dont need to throw on many more acessories. Some cute matching bangles will work perfectly without making you look cluttered.

Show off your curves by tightening a nice leather belt around your waist just above your belly button. If your not curvacious this will give you that hourglass figure you have always wanted and make the dress flare out just perfectly to give you the flirty edge you need.

Embrace your sex appeal, Embrace your style, and Embrace everything else that makes you a woman. Nothing screams night on the town more then this little black dress. Forever 21 brings sexy to life with some of their winter season fashions. So put on this dress, walk with confidence, and turn heads. Remember that everyone has their own sense of style, and at Forever 21 you can find yours. Stay in your college budget, and be the fashionista you have always dreamed of.

When wearing a short dress like this that directs every ones attention to your legs, a little help by some nice tall shoes is alwaus welcomed. Make your bare legs look miles longer and leaner with these sexy heels.

Napa Valley

Film Festival

With over 400 wineries, Napa is a wellknown destination for wine lovers. But now, movie buffs also have a reason to join the fanfare with the second annual Napa Valley Film Festival that transformed the area in early November. A five-day-long celebration of film, food, and of course wine spread across downtown Napa, St. Helena, Yountville, and Calistoga. Celebrities including Alan Cumming and James Marsden, among others, joined screenings and celebration. SILO, a favorite Napa music club, was converted into a Tweet House, a tech-savvy hub where panelists were discussing topics ranging from social media to big data. One guest speaker was Barry Schuler, (pictured) former CEO of AOL, who discussed the impact of social media on film-making. Between the outstanding films, the informative panel discussions, the delectable food, and, of course, the world-renowned wine, the Napa Valley Film Festival is yet another reason to fall in love Napa.

. . . c t E Keeping Warm Love

by Jason Martineau

for the Holidays and beyond…

O

nce again the holiday season is upon us. Whatever your faith or tradition, sacred or secular, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, it’s a special time of year when people are a little closer, a little warmer… or at the very least are attending more parties. his annual recurrence reminds us of the cyclical nature of time, even as T we experience it in a straight line. For those of you who are in long-term relationships, or hope to be some day, this is one of those opportunities to show your beloved some extra care, thoughtfulness, and appreciation. Gifts are exchanged, family time increases, colder weather draws you together to keep warm, and lighted windows and trees sparkle, people become a little kinder, more generous, indeed it is a magical time. hy is all of that good spirit limited only to this time of year? If people W clearly have the capacity to behave this way, and genuinely enjoy it, what happens the rest of the year? Where does it go?

“oh, YOU again.”

B ack to those long-term relationships… there is a mythology that suggests that the longer people are together, the more accustomed they become to each other. Boredom sets in, familiarity breeds expectation, the spark of their earlier times together supposedly fades and is replaced by a more lackluster humdrum of daily life. The partners awake each morning, see each other there, and think, “oh, YOU again.” They begin to assume they have the other person all figured out, they’ve seen them at their best and worst, know their entire wardrobe, their usual stories, clever remarks, food preferences, seduction techniques…routine settles and casts the entire relationship into a predictable affair of clichés and worn out words. If they have a friendship as part of their love at least they might continue to enjoy each others’ company. Else they may have fallen into a workaday banal existence, with jobs and taxes, perhaps children, the occasional outing, weekly television shows, the occasional movie, dinner, or visit with friends. Gone it seems is the initial delight in learning, or making discoveries together, about each other, and the world. What happened? It was so much better before! Now we have each other all figured out… well perhaps there is a connection here between this compartmentalized approach to the holiday season, and what happens the rest of the year, when it is, “oh, YOU again.” As with all such beliefs, they are just that: beliefs. There is no evidence to suggest that relationships should transform into predictable, badly written movies, where all surprises are simply gone. In fact, that belief IS the movie! Think for a moment, while a person’s core essence or temperament may not change very much, they do indeed go through quite a variety of changes over the course of time – promotions, new jobs, a new car, hobby, hair color, losing family members, change is, in fact, constant. It is the only thing that is reliable about reality – things are constantly changing. People go through phases of life, every 7-10 years moving out of one and into another.

Priorities shift, responsibilities increase, layers of experience are added, and layers of assumptions removed. So why should we put our beloved into a box, a home-brewed stereotype, and assume we have them all figured out? The truth is, while there are recognizable patterns in our behavior that change quite slowly, there is at our core a fundamental mystery. It is the mystery of being a human being, of taking on all the newness of each day, and each day is a new one indeed. Routine can help us have a sense of structure and reliability, but unless you are psychic, you never actually know what will happen tomorrow. The sun will probably rise and set, things like that are generally reliable, but the element of surprise is always waiting for the open mind. What contributes to this downward spiral? Assumptions. What if we allowed our beloved to reveal themselves anew to us each day? What if instead of expecting outcomes, we open to them? Or instead of pretending we already know our partner’s thoughts, let them instead tell us? When we put someone into a box of assumed expectations, we rob them of their ability to transcend themselves, to change. And when they do change, we might in fact miss it altogether, and continue to see them through the lens of our own custom. In fact, that is all we end up seeing in that case, not them, but our formulated picture of them. When that happens, the members of the relationship are no longer relating.

“Why should we put our beloved into a box? ”

ow to prevent this from happening? Let go of this belief. Develop H yourselves, embrace variety, surprises, do at least one thing different or new, every day. Shake things up, invent and explore. People are not machines, they are unfolding through their lives, ever-changing and learning. Keep an open mind, and allow that sense of mystery to permeate everything. And of particular importance: communicate. Unspoken grievances and misunderstandings otherwise accumulate, and the smoldering embers eventually catch fire, leading to resentment, confusing conflicts, disengagement, loss of respect, deteriorating the connection, and thus continuing to support that artificial view of a static person, unchanging, when in fact they are nothing of the kind. hat does this have to do with the holidays? Well, remember: we beW lieve it is the time of year to be more humane and kind. So what do we do the rest of the year? Why is this limited only to a couple of months out of twelve? This spirit can last throughout the year, if we stop believing it should be only at a particular time. Beliefs are choices, not facts, and they are easier to change than we realize. Just like our views of our partners - really it’s not them who became predictable, it’s us. S o pull your lovers close, stay warm, and consider staying open to the unknown, together. The holidays (holy days) are as we make them, as is love…

Top

1 Adele “Skyfall” - Theme to James Bond

Powerhouse singer Adele is just brilliant and she does it again, this time for the theme song of the newest James Bond movie. She joins so many singers that have lent their amazing voices to the bond franchise! The track is signature bond with epic soundscapes, dark moody strings & her awesome voice filled with so much drama! Love it!

2

Sleith Bells “End Of The Line”

New York noise pop duo’s new moody video goes perfect with this lush synth driving track, showing singer Alexis Krauss’s prettier tone and harmonies. The video shows both members riding BMX bikes through mountainous roads and the great outdoors with a feeling of lost love or searching for love. You decide?

4 Seems like everything the beautiful & talented Alicia Keys touches is gold. On her hot new track she sings about female empowerment, with beautiful vocals that explode into a big hook. Love how the video opens and plays like an old classic movie – Alicia Keys is on fire!

98

No Doubt featuring Busy Signal and Major Laser “Push And Shove”

Loving this new track from No Doubt, produced by superstar DJ Diplo of Major Laser. Its a driving ska meets electro pop smash that should light up the charts with a huge hook by the amazing Gwen Stefani. Check out the video showing the band roaming the streets of Brooklyn and having a blast with cameos of Busy Signal and Major Laser.

5 Alicia Keys “Girl On Fire”

6

Purity Ring Featuring Danny Brown “Belispeak II”

This sequel to the Canadian Electronic duo’s single is an indie meets trap beat gem that features an awesome new verse by Detroit’s coolest new rapper Danny Brown. Definitely taking the new Trap Beat sound to a wider audience.

Peaches “Burst”

After a 3 year recording break the electro trash queen is back in the studio with a new EP and this new single and video. The track was produced by Boys Noize and Alex Epton and is a dark electro banger that is the perfect soundtrack for a zombie dance. The video shows a grimy Peaches running around like a psycho woman.

7 Maus Haus “No More Girls”

San Francisco synth rockers drop their 1st single from their 6 song EP, “Light Noise”, and it’s a noisy, beat driven, rock-tronica blend that sucks you in and keeps you, head bang’n, chanting the hook and moving your hips at the same time - if you have the skills to do that lol.

THE MUSIC Roundup

8 Ke$ha “Die Young”

Party girl Ke$ha is back and her 1st single doesn’t deviate from the sound blasted her to the top of the club scene. Dr. Luke produced the electro banger with lyrical contribution by Fun frontman Nate Ruess, as she sings and raps about dancing until the world ends. Not as edgy as we know her, but this track should keep her party rolling.

9 Bruno Mars“Locked Out Of Heaven”

Bruno Mars is pure showman with a voice to match, like a young Elvis meets Michael Jackson. This newest track and video kicks off with a Police style rock reggae beat that flows into his glossy big vocals over epic synths and a four on the floor chorus to keep you moving. Video shows Bruno rock’n the stage!

EMERGING ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Alexandra & The Starlight Band Presented by Mediaboxx

Alexandra Starlight, can just stand on stage and capture your attention, but lucky for us she’s got the talent to back up her good looks. When she performs, its like blasting through a time warp and seeing Janis Joplin or a young white Tina Turner on stage. She’s been around a long time, which is probably most of her life, considering her youth and she’s been honing her skills from her early days being classically trained on violin to her current rock fueled soulful vocals. This time out, she teams up with her talented guitar player boyfriend, Zachary James (Zachary James Band) and together they have put together a new group that is bringing back that classic rock sound and 60’s band appeal with lots of glitter to add. Her latest release, has got critics buzzing everywhere, calling her the new, 21st century Queen of Rock n Roll. The 5 song EP was recorded at Henson Studios in Los Angeles and captures the Classic American sound, but with a new spin and showcasing that her roots run deep in soul music that rocks. The result is a collection of awesome tracks that showcase a range of emotions and she delivers each with the confidence of an old school diva. Alexandra Starlight’s live show is pure energy, matching the intensity of the songs and earning her quite a nice reputation as an artist to watch. She is already a star, the world just needs to catch up… . For more info go to: www.alexandraband.com

HOTSPOT OF THE MONTH: Monarch, SF

6th street - SF, for years, has been known to be the center of the tenderloin area, which some consider the “Ghetto” of downtown San Francisco and not the safest spot for a new business, let alone a nightclub. Well, that might all change with the newest reincarnation to an existing venue that is located at the edge of the SOMA district on the corner of 6th, between Mission & Minna Street – Welcome to Monarch, the shared vision of 4 industry veterans; Om Records label founder Chris Smith, Two time restaurateur and award winning beverage director Tadd Cortell, Manny Alferez known to many as DJ M3 and nightlife event curator Micah Bymes, that all hope their new project will shine, drawing positive attention to the area. “We wanted to have the best of both worlds, a cool lounge and a nightclub with diverse entertainment programming, says Tadd Cortell.” The radically remodeled bi-level bar and nightclub is a multifunctional venue that is part sophisticated cocktail lounge and part musical voyager experience that opened its doors back in November of 2011. The first floor is a ground level bar that nicely blends a Steampunk, Victorian and modern art aesthetic and vibe giving it an almost time skipper ambiance from giant copper pipes & magnifying glasses at the entrance to a Steampunk inspired Chandellier which illuminates the antique redwood bar, to a fifteen foot art mural that gives peeks into the private lounge located behind. Those that want to test their tastes in music can wander downstairs to no musical limits club below, which showcases the West-coasts first custom gold Void Acoustics audio system, which is a favorite amongst DJ’s and big name acts and one of only three in America. On any given night of the week, you can visit Monarch’s bar and club and enjoy signature cocktails and happy hour and be entertained and dance to across the board musical programming and themed events. Artistic Director

The Interview Aliya: Being a painter, when did you realize your actual canvas should be human faces? I always loved painting and drawing and it seemed like something fun that I could make a go of. Aliya:The role of makeup in the modern world and how makeup is influencing our perception of beauty There’s no more a typical sixteen years old than there is a typical sixty year old. If you love a certain look, try it! What’s the worst that could happen? Beauty is a temporary condition, have fun with it! Aliya:You have been working with Shiseido since 1997, what are your most trusted and all-time favorite products from Shiseido? The Luminizing Satin Face Color particularly the High Beam White (WT905) and Soft Beam Gold (BE206). I love how they make the skin glow. I get through them at the [Fashion Week] shows like you wouldn’t believe! Aliya:What was your source of inspiration for the creation of Perfect Rouge your debut collection as Artistic Director Shiseido? Perfect Rouge is about colors that elevate the beauty in life; colors that bring true glamour and elegance within our reach. Aliya: Favorite facial feature in a woman? A glowing, healthy looking complexion Aliya: Difficult question, do you have a favorite makeup tool? Well, I always have to have these three brushes with me in my kit; - A 1/4” or 1/8”-inch fluffy shadow brush I use it for shadow around the eye or lipstick application. - Shiseido’s Perfect Foundation Brush small, compact, easy to use, and suitable for a variety of foundation formulations. I like that the bristles are tightly packed so the working surface adheres well to the skin. The short handle allows for precise control when working with base makeup. - Spoolie brush, brilliant for combing color through eyebrows for added definition. Aliya: “You don’t see Dita Von Tesse ditching the red lipstick because she’s performing in August” perfectly explains your views about colors and trends. We would be more than thrilled if you could share with our readers a timeless beauty advice beyond the boundaries of fleeting fashion and craze: Makeup should both look and feel good. Ignore trends and fashion unless they really speak to you. Aliya: Any upcoming products from Shiseido that we should be looking forward to? In spring 2013, Shiseido will announce new additions to the following lines: Perfect Rouge, Perfect Rouge Tender Sheer, Shimmering Rouge, Lacquer Rouge, Luminizing Satin Face Color and Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trios. Stay tuned!
