Reflections on Practice On Clarity

Research As someone who has never designed a calendar before, the research portion of this project was extremely important. As soon as I revived the assignment I started doing some visual research to see how other designers had tackled creating a calendar. In addition to looking at calendars, I also looked at designs, given that the calendar was supposed to function as a poster as well. I quickly decided that, for the poster, I wanted to create my own illustrations, so shortly after the project started I began to look at different styles of illustration as well, particularly ones which incorporated typography as a key

element. Throughout design process I continued to use visual resource as a way to help me solve some of my design problems. In particular, once I had created the illustrations that I wanted to use on either side of the calendar, I struggled to find a way to integrate those images with the copy of the calendar’s events. Visual research helped me navigate that relationship as I saw how other designers managed that same problems. I also continued to look at examples of well-considered typography, to ensure that the events and their descriptions were as clear as possible. Right: Examples of posters and calendars I looked to for inspiration for this project.

Discovery A large portion of my design process consisted of trial and error discovery. I do not have a strong design sense when it comes to typography so a lot of typographic choices came from trying different thing, printing them out, and choosing which ones were working. Discovery also played a large role in the development of the illustrations I used. I made some general sketched for the illustration before I started making it in illustrator, but a large part of the final image where conceptualized comLeft: Spot illustration from the final poster. This illustration is a good example of how a large part of my discover design process worked. I would create the individual parts firs, such as the 3D type or paint tubes, and then try to find interesting compositions by rearranging those elements in new ways.

pletely digitally. This resulted from making several different vector assets and then combining them in different ways to see which worked well together. Discovery was an important part of this project because several of my design choices were informed by simply trying new things, printing them out, and moving forward with what was working.

Reflections on Practice On Clarity

Refinement Once I had settled on the key concepts and imagery for my calendar, the refinement process ensured that all of my design decisions were as polished and effective as possible. I was constantly working on my typographic rules, making them more specific and creating a clearly defined hierarchy. Similarly, I was constantly refining my illustrations. The images I created are quite complex and are built from individually crated vector assets, which could easily be recombined and moved around to create a number of very different illustration. In addition, the complex nature of the illustration meant that there were constant touch-ups and edits made to polish the elements of

the illustration. Finally, once I had more refined versions of the illustrations and the type respectively, I did a lot of work to refine the entire composition of the poster so that the type and the illustrations were working together. This involved adjusting the type and the illustration so that each were not only interesting on their own, but so that they enhanced one another. The final product depended on multiple intensive rounds of refinement to create a final composition that had well-conceived and executed parts and a dynamic whole composition. Right: Initial mock-up of the calendar testing size, folding strategy, and initial body copy concepts.

Criticism

Final Review

Most of the criticism I received for this project came with regards to the composition as a whole. Both my professor and my fellow students felt that I had individually elements that were working well, but that I struggled to fit all those elements together. On the backside of the calendar I had to combine all of the text for the events, the illustrations I made, and images corresponding with some of the events. Striking a balance between these three elements proved to be an extremely difficult process and was the chief problem I dealt with throughout this project, and thus the element of the design for which I received the most criticism. Overall, though, I did not receive much criticism on either the illustrations or the typography, outside of perhaps some reminders to pay more attention to my rags.

This project was a challenging yet extremely rewarding one. I had much more freedom than usual to choose a unique direction for this project and that allowed me to experiment with new things. I learned a lot about how to incorporate display text into an illustration, and how to combine body copy and illustration effectively. I am very happy with the final project, as I think I created some interesting and dynamic Right: Detail of illustration on the poster side of the calendar.
