What is a forcola and how many types are there?
The forcola is the typical wooden rowlock used in traditional Venetian boats: Gondolas, Batelas, Sandolos, Mascaretas… They are made from a single block of walnut wood, completely sculpted by hand and tailor-made for each rower.
How did you get this passion?
My passion started as a child when my grandfather used to take me in his rowing boat. As I grew up, I realised that producing forcolas and oars allowed me to combine my passion for rowing, wood, the rigorous technique and a certain aesthetic taste.
Who are your customers?
The Gondoliers, any Venetians like me who love roaming the city canals on their boats, the Venetian sportsmen, called regatanti, and the people who practise Venetian rowing in the lagoon hinterland, but also in Europe and the United States. Last year I made oars and forcolas for the second edition of the Australian vogalonga! There are also many who just love craftsmanship, wood and made-in-Italy products and buy the forcola as an object of design, an authentic symbol of Venice.
Why is rowing the best way to live Venice?
Venice was designed to be travelled by rowing. It is the most natural thing, and it is also practical and sustainable. At the same time, it has a unique charm. Especially at night.
Can you recommend a route through the lagoon?
I like to enjoy the lagoon at dawn, rowing in the Valesana style km from Murano in the direction of Burano, then turn into the smaller canals towards Sant’Erasmo and come back to Murano.
The forcola needs the oar as Venice needs…?
Its lagoon. Venice is nothing without its Lagoon just as a forcola has no purpose without an oar.

Cos’è la forcola e quanti tipi ne esistono?
La forcola è lo scalmo in legno tipico delle barche tradizionali veneziane, Gondola, Batela, Sandolo, Mascareta... Ricavata da un unico blocco di legno di noce, è scolpita interamente a mano e realizzata su misura per ogni vogatore.
Com’è nata questa sua passione?
La mia passione nacque quando da piccolo mi nonno iniziò a portarmi nella sua barca a remi. Crescendo mi sono reso conto che fare forcole e remi metteva insieme la mia passione per la certo gusto estetico.
Chi sono i suoi clienti?
I Gondolieri, i veneziani che come me amano girovagare a remi per i canali della città, gli sportivi veneziani, chiamati regatanti, e le persone che praticano la voga veneta nell’entroterra lagunare, ma anche in Europa e negli Stati Uniti. L’anno scorso ho realizzato remi e forcole per la seconda edizione della vogalonga australiana! Sono poi molti gli amanti dell’artigianato, del legno e del made in italy che acquistano la forcola come oggetto di design, simbolo della Venezia autentica.
Perché la voga è il più bel modo di vivere Venezia?
Venezia è stata pensata per essere attraversata a remi. È il punto di vista più naturale. Oltre ad essere pratico e sostenibile. Al contempo ha un fascino unico. Soprattutto di notte.
Un suo itinerario in laguna?
All’alba mi piace godere della laguna piatta, senza moto ondoso, vogando alla valesana (tecnica di voga con due remi incrociati). nei ghebi verso Sant’Erasmo e tornare a Murano.
La forcola sta al remo come Venezia sta a…?
Alla sua Laguna. Venezia non è niente senza la sua Laguna così come la forcola è inutile senza un remo.
